Rise Characterizations

Last month I did an in-depth re-watch of rottmnt s1 to take some notes on writing the characters of rise from their perspective and such. Figured I'd share what I found, but I'm also posting this bc my docs have a nasty habit of blipping out of existence.

We'll start with Raph bc he's the oldest of course, but I'll post the others sep. bc this is gonna get long!!

Raph Character Notes

Language Habits:

Catchphrases: "like a boss", "smash"

Verbalizes his attacks such as "smash", "knuckle sandwich", "power smash jitsu", "tonfa power jitsu", "mystic punch jitsu"

Uses older song titles for surprised exclamations or in place of cursing, most notably "jumping jack flash!"

Uses aave/bae, For example: 'em instead of them, 'ey instead of they, 'cause instead of because, forgoes the g in ing words (going becomes goin')

Uses less and less grammar the more he's stressed, and his voice will come to a higher pitch

Will speak in a softer tone to his little brothers if he's concerned about hurting their feelings. Aka babying them

Mixes up both metaphors and idioms. Would be one to say how the turn tables unironically

Clumsy, "takes horrible pictures", isn't very good at hiding, he's a big guy so it probably took a lot of time to find balance

A sweet guy who still won't shy from making fun of his family. Leo tends to be the brunt of his teasing since he is the most annoying, but he will also poke Donnie on his dramatics

Likes cute things!!! Has a teddy bear collection and loves animals. It's so cool how this isn't played off as a joke and he's still just as masculine for liking pink and cutesy stuff

Likes fighting!!! Gets a lot of energy out defeating bad guys (where he directs his anger towards), the one who is shown to train the most, and also weight lifts in his spare time

Doesn't do well under pressure, here the anger comes out the most. He gets stressed when it's all on him, especially since he tends to mess up the most in these moments

Name Proposal for the SAINW Mikey getting yeeted into the 2012 Universe Ghost style au because since Ghost in a shell is a reference not only to the anime but literally Donny aka Ghost in a shell (because he’s a turtle AND because he is “an outer form without substance”. Or A shell of his once self.

Talking Heads is what I would suggest because one , the band and one of their famous songs; Same as it ever was. And two, probably something Raph say about Mikey. Three, it according to Google as means “a commentator or reporter on television who addresses the camera and is viewed in close-up” Sainw Mikey has a different perspective of the world.

He’s no longer that kid who cracked jokes and had his brothers backs. He has seen the horrors SAINW had to offer.

So seeing 2012’s world which feels silly (but not as silly as rise’s world) it leaves him like he’s more an outsider to this strange and unusual world.

Anyways this was just thought process that got a bit out of hand 😅

Characters should be layered. It's nice that Raph can be afraid, too. But don't get me wrong, it's your opinion, of course, I respect that

I love Donnie. He is smart. This is a coming of age story. They all sucked at the beginning but improved later on. Tbh it's unrealistic that Donnie is the tech guy, and docter and Lab Genius And a ninja...like look at Donnie from 2o12....like he has soooooo much pressure and because hes the smartest he needs to be stuck in his lab and that makes him a weak fighter. And leo, being a 2023 Donnie, can whoop ass now. I don't need Donnie to be perfect

I see where you're coming from with the Raph thing but it still struck me as weird. I know that the odds were hugely stacked against them, it's what I loved about superfly's introduction in the bowling alley. That sudden realisation that there's no way they can win if they start fighting. But you also have a scene like getting back April's bike, where they burst in to see a bunch of huge guys (with guns, though I don't know if they noticed it at that time) and Raph is absolutely frothing at the mouth to fight. You can have the characters be scared and wanna chicken out, it's just weird that it was Raph, y'know?

But I can also acknowledge that I don't think those moments were meant to be taken as serious character moments and more funny bits, so hey ho.

The Donnie point I absolutely have to concede that point. I didn't realise it at the time but yeah, I agree. It's clear that he's meant to discover his love for tech and I would argue that being at a school and probably taking IT lessons could spark that passion. It all makes sense. When I made that original post, I just for some reason didn't realise that. What's extra embarrassing is that I'm sure that I even made a post about how cool it would be to see a Donnie learn to love tech rather than it coming already baked in. So yeah! You're right there!

The other ask about college reminded me, I just brought a physical copy of superbright to my college professor, I took digital painting with him and now he's letting me sit in on his life drawing class. He did a quick flip through and he liked it! He also immediately said "yeah if you like this art get into the history, who did they learn from?" I've only been following you for 2ish years? And it's just been what's landed on my dash. But I looove your pieces, the coloring on the backgrounds versus how Leo and Takumi are drawn, and then the pieces like the mainly pink diner.

So yeah mainly wanted to say you're super cool! Things that you learned from would be neat to see but no pressure.

as far as my art history goes, i have no academic background in art so i'm just making stuff up. i think like a lot of kids I got my roots in wanting to draw like shoujo manga, particularly the big eyed round faces of the early 2000s. I would just try to copy the eyes or something. To this day I honestly don't really look at tutorials or watch speedpaints i kind of just look at finished art and try to emulate the things I like about them. It's very simplistic I think and perhaps means I don't make art that's as clean or efficient as people who actually go out and try to learn how pro artists actually draw.

i went on pixiv a lot as a teen and followed like 1000+ artists and looked at a lot of art all the time. I was really enamored by people who could draw characters and backgrounds, like fuzichoco. (this is a super weird fun fact but one of my favorite artists in like 2011-2012 who specialized in like drawing beautiful girls with beautiful backgrounds ended up getting into leokumi under a different name/account and i was their mutual! and i didnt realize this until rather recently. im too shy to share the name tho. my teen self is throttling me btw). I Really wanted to learn how to draw backgrounds so i had to go through the struggle of teaching myself perspective and later on downloading 3d software so i could see boxes on the same plane at angles lol.

When I see art I like I try to capture the essence of what it is I liked about it in a piece (maybe one time its desaturated colors, and the next its dramatically long legs, or adding blur to the foreground), and i decide if it worked out and I want to keep doing it. Some stuff i definitely continue to use is i draw upper eyelashes the way i do because of Sata (touken ranbu, feh artist) and i started drawing leo with weird non-blond hair colors because of Araki (the jjba mangaka, who often colors his characters in alternate palettes than their "canon"). Even though i think there are stuff im a bit rigid about, like i always kinda stay in the realm of anime style, I'm still trying to keep trying out stuff I see in other artists, not just even anime artists but everyone's favorite Leyendecker or Mucha, or I'll take photos of random stuff to file away as an idea. Like I have a photo of leaves my coworker collected that have a nice green to pink gradient that I took for inspiration.

As far as the diner picture goes I think to pull off that piece I needed to practice making art with less colors and also less contrast. Similar shades of pink take up most of the picture with teals being a secondary color and avoiding adding other colors in large amounts. I think the linework is doing a lot of work in that piece. I had to google a photo of a person sitting at a diner table for the perspective.

Hmm thoughts on Angie Banks - I'm very curious about her. She was so happy to see Jonah despite their separation and him not reaching out. Luke mentioned she asked him about Jon, so she is clearly interested in being close with him. An with Jon's strong reaction about not knowing about her life and feeling guilty...looks to me like great potential for some estrangement siblings bonding 👀 which I absolutely love, cause this is the person you kinda know, but that you also don't, and you recognize little pieces from childhood but you also have to get to know each other anew, you had similar homes, but were your experiences the same? Did one take it differently than the other? What perspective does this person have? And how will they react to each other's friends and partners, how will, if they do at all, fit in that group?

I see lots of potential here and I'm super curious if Angie gets any places in the next arcs 👀✨️💙

Okay, this has thankfully never come up in the two years I've had this blog, but I wanna nip something in the bud. I want to explain why in my opinion, Corhajat is not a problematic ship. Just in case someone stumbles across this blog and thinks I'm promoting something I'm not, and so I can reference this post if anyone in general confronts me on it.

I feel some people interpret the deeprealms as "This character is only a few months old, but they have the bodies of adults." This is not true at all. The 2nd generation lived their lives at normal rates from their perspective. It's just that deeprealms and fateslandia move at different rates. Which is why Rhajat is now older than Hayato.

Rhajat mentions that her deeprealms moves at an even faster rate. She says "It was only after I left my Deeprealm to voyage here… that I discovered how time flowed at an accelerated rate.A rate far faster than the other Deeprealms… If I had remained there, I'd be a white-haired old lady by now. That's how I know I'm older than you. I may actually be older than Mother, too."

This implies Rhajat is one of, if not the oldest 2nd gen. For all we know, she could be older than Shigure. That support never says who the older one is between them. She even mentions she might be older than Hayato's wife. Of course, Hayato can marry Nyx and Orochi, it's very unlikely that she's older than them. However, it does state that she's not a child. In my opinion, I can't see her being younger than 17. And even that might be lowballing it. The canon status of feh is VERY debatable, but it also refers to Rhajat as an adult.

Let's say Rhajat isn't an adult though. Corrin doesn't have a canon age. Corrin could be somewhere between 17 and 19 for all we know. All we know is that she's older than Takumi and Leo (who lack canon ages as well but are teens at youngest) and Sakura and Elise (who are both young, "short for my age/adult you technically are" be damned.) Hell, Rhajat could be the older of the two. So they're both adults, or at least around the same age is a pretty safe assumption.

Now when they met, Rhajat was a child. This is a canon fact. BUT. According to the Japanese support "You don't remember your childhood, but a long time ago, I visited the secluded village where you lived, just once. And, you bet (met?) us." Corrin did not raise or even really interact with Rhajat as a child. He played with her once, saved her and they didn't meet again until she was an adult.

To play devil's advocate, there is a HORRIBLE line exclusive to male corrin's version. Corrin says "I love you too... I'm sure... back then, I fell in love with you too." I will not defend this. I have NO idea who thought this line was cute. However, the wlw version, the version most people ship, is completely different in Japan and says nothing about that in either version.

Hell you could argue all of this is moot because only male corrin has this, but I'm addressing it just in case.

Lastly, I wanna talk about Rhajat being a "predatory lesbian." Stalking is wrong, let me throw that out there. But I feel calling Rhajat predatory is pushing it. Rhajat describes her stalking as "watching over (corrin)." The phrasing sounds like she's watching their back to protect them. Still wrong, and arguably a reach, but not predatory. Not to mention that Selkie's support with Rhajat makes it clear Rhajat is VERY socially awkward. She's not being malicious here. Predatory implies malice in my opinion, and Rhajat is a girl with a crush who expresses it, admittedly in a problematic way.

This post isn't an attempt to convince you to ship it if you don't. It's cool if it makes you uncomfortable. However, it is not abusive, it is not an age gap, it is not a pedo ship.

Tl;Dr rhajat and corrin are around the same age, corrin only interacted with child rhajat once, and Rhajat isn't predatory.

I sometimes feel like ppl read too much into 2012 a bit, not in a bad way or anything that exactly what fandom does. We pick apart our fav media, looking for all the subtle hints and little interactions to feed our fave headcanons and canons.

But it's back to that Steven universe killing the diamonds conversation, this is a show predominantly written for 11 year Olds 😭 and not only that it's a show that put cool fight scenes first and treated emotions and relationship dynamics as an after thought. It was also literally made in a period of time when shows were kind of mean. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it but it just means does nuances and stuff won't really be the main focus point of the show(which I also think it's an added bonus because it gives fans so many different ways to add that nuance themselves) and at the end of the day we all will leave with different interpretations since the show wasn't so firm in expressing the overall dynamics and pushed everyone aside to make Leo the main focus alot of the time.

Like for me, I couldn't stand how splinter treated Raph. I related most to Raph as a kid and found how Raph was treated by splinter infuriatingly similar to how my mother treated me and for Leo I personally thought he had it best compared to his brothers because he had the closest relationship to Splinter but when I asked my little sister about it she said that she thinks he has it worse because splinter basically used him as his personal therapist and used him to deal with his problems. I never thought of it like that and honestly thought the worst part of their relationship was that Splinter left Leo to be the leader of the group in and outside of missions but I learnt a new perspective and I didn't immediately refute it because I didn't see it at first.

And I really think this is one of the biggest problems with the 2012 discussion. We always try to put everything into black and white, neat little boxes with best little labels. But there is always a gray area and sometimes it might not even be grey it can be fucking pink. We need to respect eachothers interpretations of the relationships and try to not be too quick to bash eachothers interpretations to a pulp.

And sometimes we are too blinded by rises awesomeness that we don't find the need to pay attention to 2012's awesomeness too and only look at the negatives.

And in a tangent too many ppl refuse to give 2012 a chance😭😭 ppl are too ready to call it out but haven't watched it in years. They use 2012 to make rise brothers look better.

I'll be looking for a crossover fic between the two iterations and the only thing I'll find is ppl writing 2012 April and Raph(and sometimes Donnie) like literal demon spawns and it honestly makes me kind of sad like we could have used that opportunity to add like nuances to their characters but instead we write them so unnecessarily mean😭😭😭 like babes stoppppppppp I just want to see the brothers be besties not rise brothers adopt Mikey because 12 brothers are evil monsters that don't care about their baby brother.

Sorry if this is hard to follow, I'm really bad with writing stuff that aren't in bullet points lol. And even tho English is the only language I know doesn't mean I know how to do it well😭😭😭

I started with just wanting to draw them with face masks (a strange benefit from quarantine; I never knew how much I loved wearing masks); which led to wanting to draw them wearing merch outfits. I spiraled from there. Raph’s was the hardest cuz I wanted it to be like corpse husband or the dude from Tokyo ghoul; an eyepatch face mask combo. But neither fit. So a teddy bear would do (although now I’ve totally decided it’s a knock off glam rock freddy)

Other headcanon shit:

They all definitely had a Minecraft phase that they will sometimes re-hyperfixate on (Pbbfffttt I’m not projecting I dunno what you’re talking about/s)

Techno’s death hit them all hard. He was definitely a MC CC that they all enjoyed; the potato war was much quoted in their household. He probably passed shortly after the movie, so it was salt in already massive tender wounds.

Dinosaurs was a thing they love because of splinter and the Jurassic Park series; he hyperfixated on them when Jurassic World came out. And they all loved getting to share it with him. It was one of his healthier mental and physical health times when they were growing up. Only Mikey actually ended up hyperfixating on dinosaurs, to the point he’s the only one that can name the more obscure dinosaur species

MCC is sacred. They, splinter, April and all their other friends join. It’s essentially the Super Bowl for them. They all pick/vote on who perspective they’ll watch from (Philza being the most often picked) eventually Draxum is roped in as well (Mikey definitely bonds with him by playing Minecraft with him)

Individual Headcannons:

Leo:

Still has his can, it’s just pretty hidden. He’s a huge Ranboo fan: I mean Gender and Gay? Sign him up. (Also the fact that they can both teleport in some fashion or another is just an added bonus)

It took him a long time to accept his transness; he never felt like he should consider himself that since he’s amab and a demiboy. Finally April and Donnie helped him accept that he’s still trans, transitioning or no.

He still struggles with it, not wanting to take away from “actual” trans people, but he’s working on it. And the fucking comfy ass pj pants really help.

Donnie:

The cape/cloak is supposed to be JoJo’s Bizarre adventure merch (a cloak I saw on their store) but all the cloaks had ridiculous patterns and character art on the back, and I had no fucking idea how I’d even go about doing that. So you get a mosaic esque one instead

The only other merch he’s wearing (except for maybe slippers idk) is a Philza beanie, which of course says Dadza on it; it was given to him as a gift by Mikey in honor of all his robotic children

The non-Bi-nosaur is my pride and joy, it’s based off of this I found while looking for ideas and inspiration (I added the Bi part, god I love puns)

God I want the pants I drew for him. Oh and he’s definitely wearing arthritis gloves to help with pressure sensitivity and joint pain

Made his own mask based off of some of my own versions of c!Ranboo. He’s a huge fan of beeduo and the whole arc where they adopted Michael. Fell in love with Minecraft bees. They spent weeks drawing the Minecraft family. (Fell out of the fandom cuz of the craziness of the kraang, and all the ccs doing different things)

The jacket is definitely not the same matching pair Tubbo and Ranboo bought; not at all /s

And yes her shirt has a Minecraft EnBee on it.

At this point it’s safe to assume they’re all wearing arthritis gloves to help with all kinds of pain and sensitivities. Mikey’s help with a cooling salve he puts on whenever his scars start feeling like they’re lighting on fire. The glove pressure is just a nice soothing bonus

Raph:

Finally Reading Heroes of Olympus

The Lost Hero first reading thoughts:

- It took me forever to finish this book, omg. I was very busy with school and honestly, I didn't expect this one to be longer.

- First of all, I loved all the mystery around the plot, the villain, and what the heck was going on with the roman and greek versions of the gods. I was very confused at the beginning honestly, I thought we were in some kind of parallel dimension or something.

- Actually, I like that it took its time to explain that whole thing with the gods, it was a seemingly very abstract concept and in the end, it felt much clear and made a lot of sense for the worldbuilding.

- I did start to guess the villain could be Gaia, but geez I didn't think we would dive into primordial gods. But at the same time, I like the high stakes, the whole mission seemed impossible, and is only the first book, I was stressed.

- I really loved the new characters, It was very exciting to see the children of other gods as main characters, and the abilities it gave them.

- Loved Piper, and Jason, but especially Leo.

- You guys the way I got excited to see a latino in this series, I was praying for the first few pages for him to not get put aside. Loved Leo and all his perks, he was such an interesting character and loved to see how he used his intelligence to get out of situations.

- Love to see Annabeth, my beloved.

- Oh! and I loved to see the new cabins for the children of minor gods, wish we could have seen more of it, is so interesting to see how much this world can expand.

- Was not expecting Hera to be so involved with all this, again the gods being anything but practical and clear. Also pretty creepy (and weirdy accurate to mythology) that Jason was “a gift” to her and the whole thing with her like babysitting Leo as a kid wtf.

- They have a METAL DRAGON. How cool is that?? Very steampunk of them, 10/10, I was just as sad as Leo when it got destroyed.

- Zeus didn't even make an appearance and he was being a dick anyways, wow.

- Also really enjoyed seeing Aphrodite and Hephestus again, so interesting to see them from this new perspective, the interactions with Piper and Leo were very engaging to read, and surprisingly touching.

- Also, can NOT believe we never got a joke or something about the fact that Aphrodite and Hephestus are married, and therefore Piper and Leo are divine step-siblings. Missed opportunity.

- Also on that note, we see Aphrodite again and Eros is again not mentioned at all, are we ignoring him on purpose now Riordan?? No, like really, I would love to see him, please he is my favorite greek god and has such interesting concepts around him... (sorry needed to get that out).

- Anyways, the whole thing with the dead coming back was soo interesting, it was great to see Minos and Medea and Lycaon, and I am really curious to where all that leads.

- I was so happy when Thalia showed up, I thought I would never get to see her again. She and Jason being separated like that felt so tragic and unfair, them reuniting was def one of my favorite parts. 

-I love how many new gods we are exploring.

- The final battles were pretty cool, again, I am not sure what it is, but the stakes feel so much higher now.

- Piper my girl I already want to see more of her, I loved the relationship with her dad and her powers are so cool, and I love how reflexive her pov was. (

- Jason I felt was more on the side, probably because of the whole stolen memories thing, but it was still very cool to see his personality define itself subtly as he regained his memories, and he is just such a nice noble guy, and I get attached very easily to that kind of characters.

- In general, I love how different the three of them are and the dynamic they develop, they are so wholesome and fun, I am already dying to see more of them.

- Wait, are we really going to Greece now???!!

- The whole book I spend stressed for the well-being of Percy, and audibly gasped when I understood what the exchange meant... omg what a way to end the book, I am beyond excited to see more!

-Overall I really really loved this book, I love the feeling on it, just warm 2000s fantasy, reminded me of how old animated movies felt when I was a kid, I think that is the best I can describe it hahah. I dont know, it gave me a timeless chilhood feel I really enjoyed, I must say this narration was more on my line than the one in Percy Jackson.

-Anyways, excited to keep reading, hope it wont take as long to read the next one!

soo. review on the son of neptune?

I’ve been thinking about this ask ever since I got it and like. I don’t think I really have a review? like I’ll be honest. there were a Lot of times when I realized I had been zoned out (Very invested in candy crush) for like five minutes and instead of going back and relistening to it I just moved on and figured it probably wasn’t important. which it wasn’t because I think I followed the book just fine. I liked it well enough but that just may be my seattle goggles. they literally rode orion across the puget sound like !!! my main thought is that the book generally just lacked emotion I guess. like there isn’t anything you could do to make me give a fuck about frank and hazel. aside from the whole. um. 13 and 16 thing it’s like I don’t CARE you know. and the whole ordeal with percy getting his memory back was something I was anticipating for the whole book and when we finally got to that point it was so like. okay. I think what made it fall so flat was that we never really got to Feel percy’s eight month or whatever absence because the lost hero followed characters who didn’t even know him. and from percy’s perspective it should have been Huge to him that he had missed such a large chunk of his life but he was like. okay not Super casual about it but MY percy would have been losing his shit trying to get back to all his pals and shitting his pants excited when that ship or whatever started to land. his little reunion with tyson was also so :/ and I’m a tyson GIRL. as for characters I think ovtavian is really silly and I hope he continues to stay somewhat relevant. frank is so boring to me sorry I dont care he’s a little silly but boring and the fucker is constantly throwing himself a pity party like dude shut UP. also. I’m sure if I was a greek mythology girlie I would be having a much better time with this but I’m not so I don’t know what the fuck any of the monsters are and I have to google image search them every time.

It's time for me to go to bed. And that means everybody gets a Procrastination Essay No One Asked For About Sonic Adventure 1 for the SEGA Dreamcast!

This game is one of my super mega ultra all-time favorites. Every single time I revisit it, I am so afraid that my love for it is entirely nostalgia goggles and it will lose its charm this time around, and every single time, I just have the time of my life because the game really is great. It is so fun. It does some very cool things. It is kind of stupid but it takes itself seriously, and that is very endearing and a million times more interesting than a game that's too afraid of being perceived as cringe to be sincere.

I love basically everything about it. I painted Big the Cat on my Dreamcast and even that is not enough to communicate my vast love for this game.

Visuals

The game came out in 1998. It looks like a game that came out in 1998. But the world and character designs are fantastic and the world is so detailed. I could genuinely spend hours just moving around on the Egg Carrier overworld map appreciating all the gadgets and gizmos moving around that are purely 100% set dressing. It makes up for what it lacks in polygons with cool textures and fun trinkets everywhere. The animated CGs genuinely look amazing, and you can forgive the rest of it considering the game came out in 1998.

I also love the splash screens you get after finishing each route. They're so good.

(It goes without saying that the game looks its best on a CRT. There are some really cool lighting effects CRTs just capture better.)

Audio

It obviously has an insanely good soundtrack of just nonstop banger after banger. It also has a very 1998 dub and the sound mixing and implementation are some of the worst you'll ever hear. Eggman has like 5 voice lines that are re-used in every scene he's in. But who can complain about that when they're listening to the likes of "Bad Taste Aquarium"? Literally nobody. Who cares. Every single song slaps.

"But Leo half the time the songs start and stop mid-cutscene because of how the game handles loading" who cares. I can forgive just about ANYTHING a game does in terms of audio implementation if it has a song as good as "Bad Taste Aquarium" in its soundtrack.

Narrative

Setting aside the fact that the story is kind of stupid, I really think we need to appreciate the way it tells it. The way this game has you play through the same story from everyone's different perspective, and how the scenes that overlap actually play out differently depending on who you play as, is so big brain. You don't get the full picture of what's happening until you've played as everybody, and there is no "big group of heroes collectively take on the bad guy" until the very very end Super Sonic story... until then, it's just different people having wildly different journeys that overlap here and there and are all part of a single, bigger story.

That's just cool ass storytelling. Everyone loves to bitch about my good friend Big the Cat but the entire point is that this extremely chill guy who loves to fish and just wants to save his friend was caught up in this Adventure, and he was a small but vital part of it, and it affected him differently than it affected everybody else because he had a different reason for being involved. But that goes for everybody! Everyone's story has an arc with a start and a finish, and most of them don't come close to being involved in the whole thing. Even SONIC doesn't see everything (he doesn't have a Hot Shelter level at all). Knuckles's story ends on a really cool note, with him going "I may never know the full story of what happened here, but maybe it's better that way." Or something close to that.

I also just love the concept of benevolent protector water god goes apeshit at people, as well as the concept of a ghost from thousands of years ago trying to right ancient wrongs. Chaos and Tikal are great.

Gameplay

The thing I love about Sonic Adventure is that every single character is really fun to play. This comes at the "cost" of what you might call "balance," in that half of the characters are broken as fuck and you can just disregard the very concept of platforming with most of them. I couldn't really care less about that because I just enjoy how fun it is to play as everyone.

Sonic Adventure 2 understandably put Tails in a mech because outside of it he is too damn broken. Sonic Adventure 1 lets you play as him anyway, and it rules.

The ONLY gripe I have about the gameplay is that Big the Cat does not have the means to harm robots (because he is too nice and chill to do that), but as a result he is unable to collect animals to give the chao. I cannot think of a single character in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe who would be better suited to raise chao than Big the Cat, but Big the Cat is unable to give them animals to power up. This is a tragedy.

Overall

Sonic Adventure is a masterpiece. Every time I play it I'm like "this is the greatest game that has ever been made." The parts of it that are clunky, awkward, kind of dumb, or very dated are still endearing because it tries to do so many things that you really just have to respect it. This is the kind of game that is fantastic whether you sit down and play it straight through from plot point to plot point or you spend three hours throwing that statue around Station Square into oncoming traffic.

Of course it's not polished. It tries to do way too many cool ass things all at once to be polished. It is WAY too ambitious to be polished. That's what makes it so good. It's perfect exactly the way it is and the fact that people will play this incredible game and go "lol, 3D Sonic sucks" is a good reminder that gamers will bitch about anything and you should never care about what gamers have to say when making games.

My Rating (out of five stars): *** ½  

(Spoilers) This is another one of those movies that is so mixed, it’ll be hard to write about. There were many good things about it, but a lot of it didn’t work. Much of the trouble, from my perspective, comes from the attempt to adapt the original short story into a Hollywood production. Almost all of the problems the film had were changes made to the original work.  

The Good: 

Gregory Peck. He was perfect as a masculine writer and lover of women. He was good at letting the right amount of emotion creep through at the right times. He played a dying man really well, too- he successfully showed the anxiety, the pain, the reflection, and even the irritation with people around him. I cared about his character, even though I didn’t totally like him. 

The Technicolor. The print I saw on Youtube was beautiful, vibrant, and warm.

Gregory Peck in Technicolor. We’re talking about one of the most insanely gorgeous and sexy men of the Classical Hollywood era here- then add that luscious color... It could be the most boring movie in the world, and I would still be captivated just watching him! 

The location footage. There was a lot of cool footage of Africa, especially the wildlife footage. It was clearly filmed on location.

Susan Hayward. I liked her in this. She’s absolutely stunning in Technicolor as well, and I liked her complicated character. She loves Peck, but she also knows he doesn’t really love her. 

The ominous eerie feel to the present scenes in Africa. It almost feels like there’s a plodding drumbeat in the background, counting down Peck’s last moments on Earth. It’s very chilling. 

Hildegarde Knef. She was in Diplomatic Courier, and I loved her in that. This role didn’t give her nearly as much to do, but I enjoyed seeing her. I loved the scene when she was sculpting. 

The Bad: 

The ending! The ending! I knew Hollywood would probably change it, but I had a little hope they might not. They let Bette Davis die at the end of Dark Victory, right? Sadly, Hollywood would not stay faithful to the material this time. The fact that Peck survived just stripped most of the power from the story. Then it got worse, because they made him suddenly fall in love with Susan Hayward as well! It was just the kind of ridiculous thing you’d fear. 

Ava Gardner. I don’t know why, but there is just something I don’t like about her. Maybe it’s cause she’s such a “man’s woman” type and I don’t find her appealing at all... But her being cast as Peck’s one true love did not work for me. I didn’t care about her, I didn’t care about their romance, and I didn’t understand why she had such pull over Peck for the whole movie. 

The whole plot with Ava Gardner. I suppose I addressed a lot of that above! But, as I wrote, the whole thing was a miss for me. 

The absurdly ludicrous reunion of Peck and Gardner in Spain. Hemingway never would have written such a stupidly unbelievable scene. 

The rear projection and sets for Africa, especially when juxtaposed with actual location footage. Both the rear projection and the sets were so obvious it was distracting. 

The whole idea that ambushing and shooting a large animal proves a guy's manhood. Same with the bullfighting. I don't get why these things are supposed to prove how macho a man is. It bores me.

The way the whole story had to be cleaned up for Hollywood. No prostitutes, of course. Marriage to all the women, of course. Attrition for sins, of course.

Chrysi’s the main character, for sure… she’s got main character energy written all over her. I don’t mean to be prideful about it, but look at her.. Yeah 🤧 She’s center stage in every single universe I stick her in.

5. does your self insert have any special powers or abilities?

CHRYSI HAS LOTS OF POWERS, however I’m unsure how many are actually going to end up being canonical. It’s very dependent on the universes she’s in. The definite powers she has are seeing ghosts, sensing curses, and breaking curses! Also some spellcasting, but she hasn’t been, uh, for lack of a better term, “classically trained” like Azure has.

Some other powers that I’ve been toying with lately have been her being able to instill fear in people, being able to jump into dreams, and causing nightmares! Also she sometimes is able to bring back the dead, but that’s so dependent on other outside factors that I’m not sure if that counts? Oh well!

OH, I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT SHE SUMMONS HER WEAPON!!! It tends to be a quarterstaff with a pointy end, but sometimes it’s a sword or a bow and arrow, depending on the mood I’m in :)

Her whole “witch power” thing gets a little messy, but it boils down to her intent level and the precision with which she’s able to manipulate the world around her. It’s hard for her to do it in her head, so she tends to stick to sigil work!

10. how do the other characters feel about your self insert and f/o’s relationship?

Depends!!! Since I’ve got other asks for Despair and Jacks, I’ll answer for Gil, Archie, and Mordred!

Oz and Alice think that Chrysi dating Gil is quite possibly the best idea ever. Gil deserves a cool girlfriend, plus they have a new older sister that they love to hang out with :) It’s an awesome idea. Break, on the other hand, thinks that Gil is a bad match for Chrysi, since their communication styles clash frequently. But when they get everything to work out together, he feels a little like a proud father :) He wants them to be happy together, despite how much he disapproved of the way Gil and Chrysi hurt each other in the beginning.

Archie’s sisters fucking hate Chrysi <3 Chrysi thinks it’s sooooo funny, and she deliberately would spend time around them so they would be extra irritated with her. Ophelia thinks that Chrysi’s a good fit for Archibald, since she actually forces Archibald to be more of a real person and she doesn’t let him sink into his hedonistic side that triggers his depression. Thorn thinks Chrysi could do a lot better, which is an objective fact tbh.

Honestly…. everyone thinks it’s good that Mordred moved onto Chrysi. She’s a much better fit for him, since she’s also a lot of passion and fire! All the witches at Avalon are happy that their resident protector is beginning to fall in love with someone who is super genuine and loving and protective. They’re well-suited for each other. They all love seeing Mordred receive the care and affection he deserves :’)

15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

SHE DOES, AND SHE’S SO VERY GOOD AT HELPING EVERYONE DEFEAT THE VILLAIN. She’s part of the crew in every single universe and she always brings a unique perspective to the final “battle” in each universe :) Her methods to accomplish victory surprise everyone frequently!

I know I’ve said this before, but Chrysi’s really, really good at playing the piano. With her little ones (Alice, Oz, Elliot, Leo), she teaches them how to play + she’ll play accompaniment for those that are more advanced! They all love getting lessons from her since she’s so fun and cool :) With the Warehouse 13 crew, Chrysi likes to play songs on the piano with Artie!!! But he’s annoying because if she gets a single wrong note, he’ll yell out the correction. Well, he used to do that, until Chrysi started to do the exact same thing to him. Now they silently stare at each other if one or the other accidentally hits the wrong note.

Anyway, it makes sense for a fire sign to admire people who are incredibly strong, confident and direct (like Gojo and Maki). They're both brilliant sorcerers and thus have majorly earned her respect.

Taurus: Mei Mei. Kill. I mean, she certainly has the materialistic side of Taurus down pat?? Also hardworking and whatnot... but that's about it. She lacks the care, kindness and deep appreciation for beauty that Taurus tends to have. She has all the Bull with none of the Venus side of Taurus, you know? That said, she is stunning. So maybe not completely lacking, but still.

Gemini: Noratoshi Kamo. Kill. Okay so he's a nice guy and I actually quite like him, despite the 'kill' verdict. He's just a very very base-level Gemini, with not much of the stuff I really love about that sign? He's fun and chill and nice. Which is great! But that's it. He's got no real depth. He seems like the kind of guy who would have Gemini's stereotypical flakiness and gossip-y-ness too. He's definitely cool though! No hard feelings for my man Kamo, I promise.

Cancer: Nanami Kento. Friend? I said 'friend' with a question mark because he's more like a mentor or teacher than anything else. I have too much respect for him to ever see him on an equal friend level. Due to his Cancer qualities, he is one of the only anime teachers I respect. He's very protective over these kids and has dived in whenever they need him. He understands that they are kids and need to be nurtured and protected, not thrown into life-threatening situations without a second thought. Nanami is a hard worker, but he knows it isn't everything hence, his aversion to overtime). Endless respect for this man 15/10. I'm not a Nanami simp, but I do believe he deserves way more love and credit.

Leo: Nobara Kugisaki. BEST friend. (Also the girl in the gif above, in case anyone didn't know). The ultimate bad bitch. Her love for fashion and shopping? Stereotypical Leo trait. Her fierce love and protectiveness of Maki? Stereotypical Leo trait. Her gorgeous hair??? STEREOTYPICAL LEO TRAIT!! She fits her sign incredibly well. She embodies most Leo traits tbh, good and bad. I love her for it!! She has great style. She is honest, speaks her mind (personally a trait I adore) and isn't afraid to put people in their place. Being best friends with Nobara would be the same as having a guard dog (in a cute way). I love her, she wins, one of my favourite Leos <3

Virgo: Masamichi Yaga. Kill. I hate him. So stern, traditional, practical, organised. For what?? I know he's still flexible like Virgo, but my point stands anyway. You could argue that, yes, 'this is logically the best way'. Actually think about things from an emotional, human perspective though. Not everything is the right thing to do just because it 'makes sense'. What's worked for you in the past might not work in this situation. I fully support Gojo in his dream of changing the Jujutsu sorcery high-ups and the way things are done.

Libra: Aoi Todo. Frenemies. I know this wasn't an option, but he did not fit into any of them. He appreciates beauty and is quite romantic like Libra, but holy hell he's a bit much. Personally I think he's a very funny character, as a character. I would struggle with him so much in real life omg. I would've lost it at him at least once. Sorry Todo <3

Scorpio: Inumaki Toge. Friend!! No cuz Inumaki is my MAN. He loves fucking with people and it's iconic. I also think it's crazy how this man speaks in an onigiri language and still has SO many people simping for him (as he should). He has the magnetism and overall attractiveness of Scorpio. Good for him!! He's also very loyal and deeply emotional with his loved ones, much like Scorpio. I mean if you think about it, he made up a while onigiri language to protect everyone? Even though I'm sure it makes life quite difficult at times? That's honestly so sweet and people don't talk about how kind Inumaki is, much like they don't with Scorpio.

Sagittarius: Gojo Satoru. Friend. I wanted to say 'kill' because I'm here for the Gojo slander, but honestly I really like him and how he uses his Sagittarius energy. I love how he chooses to change the jujutsu sorcery world by teaching the upcoming sorcerers. I love how he took Megumi under his wing. I love how he clearly cares and wholeheartedly believes in these kids. He's also super funny and whatnot, but he's genuinely a very protective and gentle heart. All of these traits are EXACTLY what Sagittarius is all about, and I think he embodies it perfectly tbh. Not to mention is bluntness towards the higher ups lmaooo

Capricorn: Megumi Fushiguro. Marry. Omg okay Megumi <333. He's extremely powerful, but doubts his abilities majorly (very Capricorn thing to do). He does a lot of things that are hard, but for the greater good. Extremely noble guy. He's also very proud and quite serious, which is obviously quite stereotypical Capricorn. Aquarius: Maki Zenin. Marry. MMMMMM Maki <33333. The way she wants to restructure and quite frankly beat the Zenin Clan as we know it, to prove them all wrong? Iconic. The way she's found a way to fight despite not being born with cursed energy? Outstanding. The way she uses her Aquarius energy to change things for the better and become stronger is incredibly admirable. I think she shows the 'revolutionise' and 'change' part of Aquarius very well. She can come off as quite cold, though we can tell she always means well and does warm up eventually. All in all I love her very much and I'm honoured to be the same sign as her.

Pisces: Yuji Itadori: Marry. THE LOVE. OF MY LIFE. Best boy. My sweet, sweet boy. His empathy and kindness is unparalleled. He has so much love to give the world. Yuji is constantly doing whatever he can to help the world and everyone in it, even if it means killing himself in the process. He is able to connect, empathise and relate to people in a way most people cannot (think about what he did for Junpei, you know?). A very different note, but he was right into the occult club which is very spiritual-Neptune-y of him.
