Captain America: Civil War was my favorite MCU film for the longest time but rewatching it recently made me sad. There’s so much needless fighting. I remember watching it in theaters and it was such a satisfying follow-up to Age of Ultron because it actually had weight to it, but I also remember getting out of the theater and realizing that no, Avengers 3 would not have all the Avengers together. There was a rumor floating around at the time of Age of Ultron that in the third Avengers film they’d face off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and that blew my mind. Then Civil War came out, and THAT blew my mind, but if they didn’t get together at the end of Civil War, how could they face the Guardians together? Civil War saved the MCU, but it also kind of broke it. It was the beginning of the end of the arc, and it was the first Marvel film where nobody won and nothing was resolved.

Fleshing this out as I write it, but: Bucky and Steve’s respective movements to the modern world through the lens of their respective fighting skills & styles

Because Steve’s never really changes all that much. He fought with a shield and sometimes a gun, then he got frozen. And the modern version dropped the gun partly partly bc of the weird line modern pg movies of how obviously you’re allowed to kill people on screen and partly bc he kept ending up in situations where he wasn’t fighting humans he was willing to kill, but despite all the angsting, there was still a place in this world for a supersoldier once he found it

But Bucky, he was a sniper. James Buchanan Barnes was a sniper, and the Winter Soldier was a sniper. I saw the winter soldier unmasking fight scene on here the other day, and he starts with guns. Starts with a sniper rifle, pares down to something closer range when he sees this’ll be a fight, and then it’s only when that stops being an option that he goes to knives and fists. Even when Hydra took him and brainwashed him and pointed him at his best friend, he still fought like Bucky would have - infinitely more dangerous, and against completely different people, but all the same skills.

But then he gets out of it. And he lays low for a while, and he’s no one there. But when the world comes for him again, he can’t be a sniper anymore. He’s not on a team, hasn’t been since he shook hydra. And the world’s changed in a way that makes who he used to be incompatible in a way that it didn’t for Steve. Because Steve can adapt, he can lose the gun and he can join shield, he can be a vigilante in the night. But what role does a sniper have in this world? Personally I’m a fan of the Bucky was drafted theory, but even if not, I don’t think he’d fit back into a military. Wouldn’t trust people, wouldn’t be able to take orders without feeling like someone else’s tool again. There’s no real role for a true sniper in the avengers, no time to sit and plan, no place where someone can be above the action.

And so what can Bucky do but become the Winter Soldier in a way that he never was when he was Hydra? In CW, in TFATWS, he’s fighting hand to hand. Going in with close range attacks, fighting multiple opponents at once. He’s a soldier, not a sniper.

Steve got flashed forward to a time where he didn’t quite belong, but could find a place. Bucky found his way to the future, but in living there was forced to become all the ways in which he had lost himself along the way.

I haven't read any STEVE/BUCKY FIC in the last five years or so (Endgame really burned me hard), BUT I can at least offer what I read up to that point! Most of my recs are from around when Captain America: The Winter Soldier first came out (some from before, so there's a few speculation fics) and then I was ready semi-regularly up through Inifinity War, so these may be a bit dated but also the fandom had some ABSOLUTE BANGER fics from that era! I found the post you were talking about. The stan's account was deactivated, but yeesh. 😬 Nice replies to them, btw.

The stan that bashed on me said I was being misogynistic, even though I'm a black woman who just wanted to see another black character get their chance to shine.

Hell, it's not just the shows and movies (I think this all started with Endgame). It's also the Steve Rogers musical too. I don't know if you know about it, but Disney made the musical real, and it really did Sam and Bucky dirty.

Sam isn't even in it. Maybe he was mentioned once, but the musical showed an image of Sam as Captain America. As for Bucky, his scene from CA:TFA, where he saved pre-serum Steve, was given to Peggy instead. Bucky was mentioned once, and the musical tried to justify Steve's ending from Endgame. All for this ship.

And, frankly, I don't hate Peggy, I'm just more annoyed that other characters get shoved aside as well as this great dynamic that Steve and Bucky had, while she and her ship with Steve has been getting propped up more and more. But, seeing some of your and the others' posts, I get why you guys don't like her.

Girl, don’t get me started on the abomination that was Rogers the musical. It could have been glorious, it had so much potential, but once again Bucky’s role in Steve’s story was given to Peggy, and Sam wasn’t even there!

I feel like Marvel feels the need to tone down Stucky or their friendship overall because it was just too powerful. We all remember the hashtag that begged Marvel to make Stucky Canon, #givecaptainamericaaboyfriend. They just couldn’t let it happen, not to a main and important character like Steve, god forbid. And so ever since civil war Stucky has always had little to no scenes together no matter how well established it was in previous projects. All their scenes and dynamic were given to Peggy, their friendship was toned down, Steve’s whole ending happened. It just feels like Stucky is so menacing to Marvel that the only way to stop us is by destroying Steve, Bucky and their relationship.

I mean, Steve is given no justice in his ending and in all the other projects he appeared in. Bucky went from a victim and prisoner of war to someone who must make amends for things that were beyond his control. And the depth of their friendship was toned down and reduced every time Peggy was involved. And then they wonder why many people in the fandom dislike Peggy or why the whole Rogers the musical initiative flopped the second it went beyond Hawkeye.

Like, even if you don’t ship Stucky you can tell that they care for each other, and you can tell there was a shift after people actually wanted Marvel to take action and do something about this dynamic. Steve can’t get even one episode as his own character because Peggy must be there. Bucky had more luck, but still… and let’s not even talk about Sam, his only appearance was as a zombie!

In another post of mine I ranted about how bothered I was that Peggy was inserted in the 1602 storyline, and i haven’t changed my mind. It would have been so nice to give Steve one episode about himself, about his dynamic with his best friend and about the relationship with himself and his fellow avengers. But no, Peggy must be there too, and for no good reason as well.

I feel like Marvel trying to erase pre-existing relationships to have Peggy shine only results in fans turning their back on Marvel and hiding in fanfiction or whatever piece of media that can actually bring justice to the characters. Once someone on Tumblr said “you gave us the characters, but once you mess them up they’re not yours anymore. You don’t understand and respect them, therefore you don’t deserve them.” and I couldn’t agree more, which is why I am currently reading and writing fanfiction rather than buying into everything marvel gives us.

Peggy was the love interest with more screen time even before what if and all that jazz, she had her own show! And I fear that the day Marvel will realize that pushing a reimagined Nazi turned Mary Sue into every single what if episode where she can fit instead of enhancing the characters that are actually relevant in-universe it will be too late.

Hey guys, I'm giving a persuasive speech in school next week, and i want to collect some opinions to help, so if you could reblog this to help get it out there, that'd be great

I'm looking at how Avengers: Endgame affected the various character arcs of some of the major characters, including, but not limited to:

-Nat dying so that Clint could go back to his family, implying that her found family (the Avengers) was not as important as biological family

-Tony making the sacrifice play, losing everything he'd worked for, leaving everyone behind, and generally going out the way he always thought he would and never should have had to

-Steve abandoning Bucky and "the end of the line" for a woman he knew for only a short time (i love Peggy, but he’d known Buck his whole life, vs the few months to couple years he knew Peg)

-Bruce combining the brain and the brawn into one person, Professor Hulk, an idea that I'm still not sure about

I don’t understand why Zutara shippers are so obsessed with hating Aang (or Kataang).

I understand they wish Zutara was canon, and that’s perfectly valid. I get why people ship it, and even though a good chunk of the toxic side of the ZK fandom say some pretty racist stuff, the ship is harmless. But the hate is vitriolic. You got to people like the-badger-mole, sokkastyles, longing-for-rain and they spend more time whining about Aang and his relationship with Katara than they talk about Zutara. They say the most objectively untrue stuff about Aang, Katara and Zuko as if making false claims about these characters is the only way to make their ship look good.

For example:

“Zuko did some bad things throughout the show, but Aang is worse because he never supported Katara and sexuality assaulted her. Not to mention Katara never had feelings for Aang, he was practically her son that she had to take care of”.

What ZKs actually sound like:

“Zuko did some bad things throughout the show, so we have to make Aang look worse by comparison to ensure that Zuko is a better match for Katara, despite his own problems, because surely a poorly timed kiss is the same is sexual assault. We falsely believe Aang never supported Katara because he didn’t agree with her seeking vengeance of the person who killed her mom, unlike Zuko who helped her out, meaning that one single episode must mean he’s the only one who supports Katara. Lastly, we have to find a way to make Katara’s obvious affection for Aang problematic, so let’s blow her motherly traits way out of proportion and say that any time she shows Aang affection, it’s a mom coddling her toddler, and yes Aang is a toddler because he’s BALD. So what that they kissed, they’re a mother and child. Also Katara emotionally supporting Aang is bad, she actually hates it. Dude trust me”.

They reason I bring this up is because I don’t understand why they have to be so bitter, it just makes them look pathetic that these people, some fully grown adults are so butthurt about a non-canon pairing from a 20 year old cartoon. Their media-illiterate ramblings don’t prove Aang and Katara are a bad couple, they just make it painfully obvious to anyone with a brain that these types of pathetic ZKs are just seething and coping.

Sure, you might say “I’m not one to talk” seeing as Kataang is canon, but let me tell you, I have my fair share of non-canon ships that I love.

I love Ichigo X Rukia, I think they have great chemistry and strong bond, I wish they were endgame, they felt like the heart and soul of Bleach. But I don’t hate Orihime, such a sweetheart (plus she gave us the Leekspin meme) her and Ichigo are cute, I just think Ichigo and Rukia are better.

I love Black Widow X Captain America from The MCU, they would’ve been a cute couple, they had good chemistry, they kissed for corn’s sake. I don’t care that much for Steve X Peggy, they’re kinda cute, but whatever, although I do really like Captain America’s ending. I don’t like Nat X Bruce, seeing as it came out of nowhere, but whatever, it didn’t last long anyway and I have nothing against either character.

If anything I’m more prone to getting annoyed when a beloved canon couple are broken up, all the build up thrown away and replaced with another character whom has less chemistry with the original. Case in point, Haley and Andy from Modern Family, they were so cute, they had great chemistry and there was so much build up, only for Andy to leave in the season where he and Haley become a couple. Then later Haley and her initial on again off again guy Dylan get together and I gotta say, I don’t like it. But I have nothing against the character, Dylan’s a sweet guy who genuinely loves Haley and matured a lot, and they’re in no way a bad or unhealthy couple, there are people who genuinely like them as a couple too. I do think Haley’s character was kinda done dirty, but that had absolutely nothing to do with what guy she ended up with.

The moral of this story is, you can like a non-canon ship and even dislike a canon ship without making up ridiculous reasons why and acting like a spoiled entitled brat like the vocal minority of ZeeK freaks from the the toxic side of the fandom.

Am I the only one who HATED that Steve lifted Mjolnir in Endgame? Because I HATED that moment and thought it was undeserved after all the shit he pulled in Civil War, jot to mention the fact that he COULDN'T lift it in Infinity War!!!

Hard agree.

It felt unearned after everything that happened in Civil War, after how dirty he did Tony, how he used all his friends to do what he wanted and protect Bucky.

But he actually doesn't think about what's in Bucky's best interest or what Bucky may want (ironically enough Tony was the one looking out for everyone else best interests nearly that whole film - including Bucky's.)

Steve only thinks about himself and what he wants.

A flaw of Steve's that is consistent is that he's selfish.

That doesn't change.

That should have been a reason for him never being able to lift Mijonir. (Besides Mijonir and summoning lightening being distinctly Thor's power, unique to him, having Steve adopt it and summon lightening - like he's Thor is an odd choice.)

In Endgame, after winning the fight - Steve goes back and gets his happy ending...

At the cost of Peggy's.

Because he went back in time and 'got the girl', her children no longer exist.

Peggy, doesn't get a line that whole film, is reduced from a complex character in her own right to Steve's love interest and Steve's happy ending.

That's horrible. Steve fans should also hate this because he also ditched his friends (including Bucky who he apparently loved enough to fight for all of CACW.)

To bring this back to Thor for a moment, he began his story arrogant, selfish and self-centered by the conclusion of his origin story he learnt to be selfless, humble to an extent (rather like Tony) and grew worthy of Mijonir as a result.

So MCU Steve, with his flaw of selfishness, I do not feel like should have ever been able to lift Mijonir.

My only thought is that Chris could maybe argue harder for more (developed) screen time and better (more resolved) character arcs for his iconic characters.

It seems like he’s happy to go along with what he’s given to work with, and he gives the input he’s allowed: aka insist that Johnny’s end monologue is included and doesn’t get cut (which actually does give way to how the Cassandra thing makes sense, so I agree with him on that). But Ryan wrote that for Johnny so it was already there. Chris didn’t come in and try to rework Johnny his way, he just came in and did what he was asked.

The whole endgame thing which is extremely tired discourse seemed that he was fine with letting his character sort of fade away into the background (while leaving it open so if Kevin and co want to bring Steve back…) while the RDJ/Ironman show got the spotlight. You can sort of argue that for what happens in civil war too. How is cap civil war more about Tony once again than anything else?

The Johnny part was fun but some people did say they felt he was done dirty - he didn’t get too much play outside of being kind of treated like a comic relief, though you are right that it was more than just a “throwaway cameo.”

I think it’s why when he does get more creative liberty and say you’ll see more confidence showing in his performances. It’s just too bad that some of these projects haven’t been able to take off. I think his confidence is extremely rattled by some of the lukewarm reception but it’s nice to see at least he/his team wants to continue to get him some more projects where he’d have more producer credits too (sacrifice). Ghosted could have been a lot better but the script was just not it. So maybe it was always DOA regardless. I did like how he helped get those cameos on set (which were arguably the best parts of the otherwise meh movie).

I feel he’s often overshadowed by bigger personalities who make decisions about certain characters he plays (Ryan and Shawn had ultimate say in how Johnny played out), the Russos and the screenwriters and Kevin feige had overall say in how Steve’s arc ended, and likely they all wanted it to center around RDJ:Tony because he started it all.

Sometimes, being adamant about your vision and input on a creative project may have you butting with a few heads but ultimately, sometimes it works out for the better. Look at how bong joon ho fought against Harvey Weinstein to keep his film the way it was against Harvey’s take to change it up. Yes, that cost the film visibility and the chance to be a big box office hit, but it’s considered one of bong’s best films (and a great film overall) and one of Chris’ best films too. I think Snowpiercer walked so parasite could run and that’s all due to bong’s vision and determination to keep it that way.

I hope CE develops better self esteem and trusts his own ability so it can open more doors for him in the future.

Wow, I think you bring up several excellent points, but, in the end, we have to remember what Chris has said about himself absolutely hating confrontation. It's extremely difficult to advocate for yourself or your pov on your character if you feel unable to speak up due to whatever internal struggles you have. But, also, I don't know how much you can even do when you're just coming in for a small supporting role. I think the "system" of the movie simply expects you to do as asked and remain quiet.

Yes I'm a mcdanno shipper through and through BUT there was a time when I really liked Cath as a character. Sure she wasn't perfect and suffered from the same problems all the other female characters in the show do- but they sold me on the idea that Steve and her were a good match and that there was genuine chemistry or at least familiarity between the two - well, at least up until she ditched him after afghanistan but let's not open that can of worms-

My point is there WAS a time I was ready to exept that Steve and she would inevitably be endgame and even if it was begrudgingly I would have found it in myself to be happy for them

Because Catherine KNOWS Steve has abandonment issues and that her leaving last time really hurt him! Danny outright told her as much and Steve was crying last time they spoke! So her up and leaving him again just after showing up and playing house for a while just makes her look incredibly unsympathetic and I hate that-

Would I have rooted for the two to end up together if she had stayed? Probably not, because I'm delulu and mcdanno is the only true endgame for me BUT in the early seasons I still could have lived with that.

Back then Catherine still felt like a lovable character with goals and motivations and her own free will, who yes, will put the mission before everything but was also constantly risking her CAREER for her boyfriend

Where did that character go? That's definitely not her who just dumped Steve for the SECOND time - this Catherine is a shallow husk not willing to fight and doesn't seem to care enough anymore about Steve to stay and that's - that I think is a huge disservice to who she used to be

Oh well at least this way we got some good hurt/comfort material for potential mcdanno fics - glass half full and all that
