【 abby anderson as a gf hc's 】
Tumblr media
a/n: this is just super fluffy and cute <333 i wrote a lot so it's below the cut
first and foremost, lots of ppl make assumptions about abby and what she's like because of her appearance. she has somewhat of a rbf, and she's insanely buff, so many ppl are intimidated by her automatically.
that being said, abby looks to be understood and known at a deeper level, and wants to be treated like anyone else no matter what she looks like
i think she's the typical "intimidating but a huge softie" type like HEAR ME OUT
anyone can look at her and know that she's insanely strong and that she could easily take them out, and while true, underneath all that abby is extremely kind and caring
she may look scary, but she loves reading, she loves animals, she loves nature, she has a soft spot for lev, she's grown to understand the world outside of herself and that there is more than what meets the eye, she's learned from her mistakes, and she's deeply loyal
so while, yes, she is tough and strong, she is much more than that and wants to be seen for all parts of herself rather than the surface; she wants to be understood and she wants her partner to be someone who isn't intimidated by her and is willing to look beyond her exterior
so while everyone else avoids her and you willingly approach her despite what ppl say? and you treat her like a person—like she were anyone else? that immedately gets you on her good side and gains you her respect
you two begin to seek each other out more and more bc she enjoys your company and begins to open up to you
she lets you see every side of her, even the ones she typically wouldn't let others see
other ppl may be confused as to how you joke around with her so easily when they'd fear for their lives if they did, but that's simply bc you're close enough to her that you know how much of a huge softie she is
okay okay enough of my intimidating softie abby agenda and now time for more interesting stuff
im FULLY convinced that in a modern!au and college!au she'd be in pre-med studying to be a doctor or a surgeon; she'd do it bc she wants to help ppl but also bc she loves and admires her dad for his work
bc of this i also see her bragging to you all the time that she'll be your doctor wife who makes big money so she can spoil you
(and she lives up to that promise)
when she comes home late from work she's quick to make it up to you
ABBY IN SCRUBS
knowing her love of novels, i feel like she struggled to pick between pre-med and english as her major, but at the end of the day being a doctor called to her passions much more so she chose english as her minor
HOWEVER, i feel like her brain is so sexy especially when talking about novels she's read
like imagine her going on tangents about the book she's read and what she thinks the meaning is, then bringing up the story's historical context, and then interdisciplinary studies and just being like "omg she's so sexy i'm going to take my clothes off rn" bc of how smart she is
her book collection is HUGE and she lets you borrow whatever you want from her shelves, and you can see all the things she's scribbled in the margins, her silly annotations, small drawings in the corners, her cussing in her notes about the characters saying stuff like "what the fuck is wrong with you?" so seriously
she'll find poems she really likes and tell you about them especially the ones that remind her of you
i feel like she'd love emily dickinson and the bronte sisters idk i can see it
she's SO excited to introduce you to her dad
she's a huge family person and wants you to feel like a part of her family too
in a modern!au lev is probably a kid who lives next door to her that she babysits and tutors sometimes but she absolutely adores him and sees him as her brother
can you imagine how much of a hopeless romantic she is
she's probably so cheesy and loves romance and being cute with you where if it were anyone else it'd be cringy but its HER and she's just so sweet and so endearing how could you hate any of it?
asks you to be her valentine every year even if you're her gf bc she still feels the need to romance you
will make a spectacle of every holiday in order to treat you somehow
okay maybe gift giving would be a love language of hers too i can see it
but i feel like her top love languages are physical touch and acts of service tho
she's definitely the type to cherish any moment with you, and values being able to sit with you in silence in general but also while you do your own activities together (so parallel play basically)
.... i think she'd love to play video games to destress but not necessarily violent ones i think she'd play more calm games like animal crossing to relax or maybe minecraft where yall can build a world together and have a little farm bc she thinks its cute
teases you when you get lost or when you die in the games tho bc she's a bully (jokingly) like that
definitely the type to be like "only I can bully you"
very protective in general she wouldn't let anyone lay a hand on you and she'd take such good care of you
worries about your well-being (physical, emotional, mental) all the time and will do whatever it takes to make sure you're okay
if you need her at 3 am, she doesn't care she goes to your place right away
if you're sick she won't hesitate to buy you medicine, clean up your place, make you soup, whatever you want
when taking care of you while sick she calls you her number one patient and her favorite patient bc she's corny like that
there's nothing she wouldn't do for you bc when she's committed, she's committed
she's such a devoted and loyal person in general that when she cares about you, she cares about you, and there's no bluffing involved
just a very sincere and honest person who is willing to grow and learn, especially with her partner
i bet she's VERY open to communication and to talk things out with you she's the type to listen to you wholeheartedly and give you all the reassurance you need
she's the type of partner who's SO open to communication and good at it that you're like omg??? how are you so calm??? i'm screaming and crying and shitting my pants rn???
she's a huge softie and such a loving person who looks to be understood the way she understands others; she craves unconditional love and wants to give to others
she's just gf (and wife) material like come ON

my big fat greek wedding is the realest greek rep in mainstream american media, not because its completely accurate- a lot is rooted in lighthearted sort of self-stereotypes, and is overall pretty shallow if youre looking for legitimate emotionally resonate representation of any kind. BUT thats also EXACTLY what makes it vibe w so many greeks anyway because we hardly ever see those very specific little eccentricities even mentioned, letalone be made the focal point, so we kind of love making fun of it in a way thats like "oh my god thats JUST like my thio maki!!! and thats just like thia calliope!!! oh fuck that ones just like me"
all things considered i dont think greek representation is like the most important ever or anything, but its so rare to see greece acknowledged beyond ancient stuff or mythology, or maybe the occasional jab at eastern europe, that its just... fun to see yourself and your family a little bit on the tv. it doesnt really get into the super deep parts of the culture or anything like that but its fine bc its fun. i think most greek families (esp of diaspora) have bonded to this movie because theyre just like us for real. before this, i think the closest thing id seen to actual greek rep on tv was from an episode of the suite life on deck where it was mainly just an eastern europe stereotype 😭 abt being hairy and playing with pig guts as balloons and shit idk. i mean also true but in a way that comes off as more mean spirited lol. but even then i was excited just to see our flag on tv and remember pointing at it to my mom so i cant say it was the worst. but hey!
anyway i like my big fat greek wedding a lot, wanna see the 3rd sometime too but never got around to it. it just vibes and is fun. and again like i said before, greek rep wasnt the most important thing ever growing up (even if it is super cool to see and does make me very happy to have our culture acknowledged outside of ancients!) but it does make me understand why representation is important in a more general way and why it means so much to people. and i also understand that it can mean a whole lot more to people whove been historically treated way worse by media. like, lack of acknowledgement is one thing, but outright malicious stereotypes are another. i do get this with lgbt+ rep too but since i was lucky enough to be born in a time where its becoming the norm i also cant imagine how it must have seen so much worse and then live in a world where every cartoon has 2 girls kissing. its not perfect and often corporate but... also a good sign
sorry this post is super stream of consciousness so its probably all over the place but i think my general thoughts are that ppl who shit on a series for having any kind of representation they dislike (being "too progressive" or something) is not only an awful unsympathetic person but also like. on the flip side will never know the joy of seeing yourself like that. but i do realize it also comes with the tradeoff of not being seen to begin with so its not like its a net positive but... those ppl still wont know! they will not understand the true joys of "[country] mentioned!!!!" when the country is The United States Of America. the end

Ypu know I have seen anti hades people say in order for persephone to be fully freed she must be let go of the underworld which misses the point of the myth of marriage and erases persephone historical ties to the underworld. Sure, there are too much woobifying hades and demonizing demeter but I also think they victimize persephone too much they forget her importance in the underworld and again how powerful she became because of it.
The thing is, it’s undeniable that the kidnapping of Persephone was a forced marriage and a rape, however rape back then wasn’t viewed how it is today, if woman is given to a man by her father she’s supposed to accept it, if he rapes her then shes supposed to accept it bc that’s her job as a wife (oversimplification but you get the idea). You know how Briseis was Achilles slave but wanted to be his legal wife for the small protection and rights it would give her? Even tho he killed her family and enslaved her? That’s probably the same idea with Persephone, where she had to accept Hades as her husband bc her options are rather limited. Like there is also a myth where Demeter is the one to turn Minthe into a plant bc Minthe tried to take Hades away from Persephone, not exactly the reaction one would expect from a mother trying to protect her daughter bc why would she want Persephone to stay with her kidnapper?
So while I understand ppl being upset over Hades being woobified, I completely understand why others would want to remove the rape aspect, since after the kidnapping they seem to have a mostly harmonious marriage with Hades treating Persephone as an equal in authority and idk about you but I’d rather not read a story about a woman loving her rapist bc he’s nice and respects her. Kidnapping alone is bad enough and at least kinda forgivable since Hades lets her go. Tho that sort of revisionism could easily be done without demonizing Demeter, bc again, some say she was the one who cursed Minthe.
I probably got some information wrong tho pls kindly correct me if I did.

this is self indulgent, but i love apothecaty diaries so much. i love that all of the characters are chinese. even with different coloured hair, you KNOW those are just the implied undertones of black hair. and there's a courtesan with pink hair, but i'm p sure the implication is just that she's cantonese akdngnfns i normally don't enjoy fiction that revolves around the upper class, or "court politics" but it's just so darn fun because the main character is not a rich person or royalty and she's also "wtf???" about court pageantry. the story has a lot of inclusion of fictionalized historic prostitutes and it would be so easy for any of the source material to be staunchly anti-sex work or write this things drenched in heavy misogynistic/puritanical ideas (like how in death note the author made a character rant abt gay ppl 😭) but in apothecary diaries, it's treated so normally! idk i just think this story is so fun! i love a little bit of mystery...

saw a post that was talking abt caffeine usage n it was like “not being able to get through a single day without a drug that was not prescribed to treat a medical condition is not normal” and like generally blaming this on capitalism etc and like
1) do you know how many cultures in the world have some kind of mild stimulant that has historically been used recreationally? so so many it’s an incredibly common thing. like we can argue if it’s good for you or whatever (most ppl not pounding monsters r probably fine) but it’s incredibly dumb to try and pathologize what is, statistically, incredibly normal behavior and
2) trying to make this distinction between “drugs prescribed to treat a medical condition” (good) and “drugs not prescribed to treat a medical condition” (bad) is just rlly showing ur whole entire ass in terms of how you think of addiction and drug usage. like what we even consider an “addiction” (vs a dependency) is so societally constructed and has so much more to do with peoples access to various substances and cultural conceptions around use of those substances than it does with the specifics of actual physical dependency
idk i just get tired of ppl being like “adults can do whatever they want! i care abt bodily autonomy” and then showing that they r drawing a clear and definite line between themselves and their personal substance use and what they perceive as abnormal substance use rather than stopping to consider that if the majority of adults in a population r physically dependent on a substance but we don’t culturally consider it an addiction then perhaps it is actually our definition of addiction that sucks and we don’t need to try to broaden the scope to attempt to pathologize like. even more kinds of behavior

When it comes to historical research, do you research for things that DON'T exist? For example, foods that are common now but didn't exist in the average American restaurant or grocery in the '80s or '90's? Words, phrases, and entire concepts that are commonly accepted today but unheard of to the average American when Mav and Ice were at Top Gun?
Your writing is so unbelievably good.
not really because I don't care about food, I care about the literary device that is "taking communion." i.e. it doesn't matter what they eat, it only matters that they're eating together, for the plot.
And, okay, showing my little-kid bias, but was there actually stuff in grocery stores in the 80s/90s that wouldn't be there today/vice versa? brands might change, like okay Pringles might not exist but you still have potato chips; and obviously specialty stuff like what you find in your average Asian market might not be commonplace, but, like, were the 90s all that different from today, American-food-wise? its my assumption that they weren't, but I also wasn't alive in the 90s, so. Um, ectocooler Hi-C, maybe? that's the one 90s food I know.
attitudes of course are what change. today's concept of being so QUICK to publicly label sexual identities would be extremely foreign, for instance. obviously people did label their sexualities in the 80s & 90s, people were definitely calling themselves bisexual and such, but probably not the people ice & mav would be hanging out with, in the Reagan-era navy. which is what my fics are about. that's the whole point.
and, also, COMMUNICATION changes. I have never used a payphone in my whole life so I actually have no idea how they work. but they were ubiquitous "back then," and lend themselves to amazingly interesting conflict (omg I don't have enough change to call my boyfriend maverick who's mad at me!!!) which is why I lean on payphones so much in my writing. honestly, im gonna be real, the invention of the cell phone makes telling stories about miscommunication so much harder. instant-speed communication would make certain stories less interesting, which is why a lot of horror movies default to the "no cell service" trope to isolate their characters, or why some teen dramas have the characters reject cell phones on principle (Alyssa or James having a phone in 2017's "The End of the F***ing World" would solve most of their problems, which is why Alyssa smashes hers in the first five minutes and James basically says he views them as a cancer to society--if they had phones the story would be boring, so the writers took away their phones).
I also feel like people used to treat society differently "back then," i.e. Going Out was much more of a thing when there were 10 channels on TV and no one had cell phones, so you Went Out and had drinks & met strangers & interacted with general society to an extent im not sure we do anymore. So that experience is way more fun to write about in the 80s than today. (u can't see me but im seething with jealousy over ppl who were born in ~1965)
idk. im not sure I did a great job reproducing the zeitgeist of the 80s/90s in my fics, bc I wasn't there to have knowledge of what they were like. I got most of my presupposed knowledge about that time period from reading Calvin & Hobbes anthologies as a kid. oh well.

i think english teachers should also learn history like idk i think knowing the historical meaning behind the words used in literature is important and the kind of values held during that period could inform the theme of the story idk maybe itll help with people thinking romeo and juliet is a romance story (its such a clear story about how society treats people and pedophilia but bc its old, ppl think all people back then did pedophilia bc short life span)

TW/ Slavery, misogynoir, and white ppl being white
Someone on tiktok make a video and we both agree in the comments how weird is to see any royalty women (especially yt) be considered feminist or "girlboss" such a Catherine of Aragon or (Catalina de Aragon), just because she had power, stood up to Henry VIII a few times and commanded strategies and went to war (or idk) being pregnants, like cool but that doesn't erase the fact that she owned slaves?? Hello? Her parents, were the ones that sponsored Christopher Columbus when he went to america?? And this influenced on latam countries to get colonized by Spain (Peru?,Mexico and others)
And someone replies this
Tumblr media
""""enslaving ppl isn't antifeminist"""
HELLO? Spain slaved black women and indegeanous women back them???...that isn't very feminist.. and it doesn't take to be a genius to know how slavery was fucked up and disgusting it was.
However, someone put them in their place, but the user8478524493735,double down
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
user3588257660364 is so done with their bullshit, as they should, and literally it shouldn't be difficult to get that most of the misogyny black women face has racism in it?? Like the word misogynoir exists for a reason??
I'm too stunned to speak but i'm not surprised? but it truly does surprised me how they are so confident on shit like "slaving ppl isn't antifeminist".
Wow...it's like they've never heard of intersectional feminism before. Do they know that Black women were also raped by white masters during slavery to give birth to mixed-race children that would become house slaves? That the modern ideas of Black women as loud, angry, obsessed with sex/more sexual and less pure than white women, and less feminine than white women as well, ALL STEM from slavery and the stereotypes that white men created about us(and white women helped promote)??? It is absolutely the intersection of racism and misogyny. Not denying that Black men and boys also suffered, but the suffering that Black women and girls endured during slavery was absolutely misogynistic as well as racist...I mean raping a woman and forcing her to have your kids while treating her as property and then saying that she asked for it because of her insatiable sexual appetite is quite literally the MOST ANTI-FEMINIST ACTION a person can commit. Honestly it sounds like they just don't view Black women as women.
As for Catherine of Aragon, I feel like people are saying this because of Six: The Musical, where she is absolutely portrayed as a feminist icon, and is typically portrayed by a Black woman, to boot(although it's worth mentioning that some people have pointed out the problems with the racial casting trends of Six, so there's that). Especially if they're British, they probably don't know much about Tudor history beyond what the musical has showed them or some stuff they looked up/heard other fans say about the Queens. Which I don't blame them for, but still, do your research before you praise white historical figures. And responding to that with "well it wasn't just Black women so it doesn't count" is just absurd, ahistorical, and racist. Typical white feminist drivel lol.
Thanks for the insight, btw, I'm glad you showed this to me(and included a tw), and have a nice day!

very personal so def don’t answer unless you want to but do you sell nudes exclusively as a money supplement thing or is there something inherently gratifying or enjoyable to you about it? just genuinely curious!
it's hard for me to say if I'm being honest. Money is definitely my biggest motivator. Some of the only times I've gotten to go out and do fun things was bc I was dick appt for ppl who could afford to treat me. not that it was established like a transactional thing, but yk. Idk how or if my relationship to sex would change much if I had more financial security or safety nets. I might be more passionate or less preoccupied with the financial aspect of it, who knows
But I wouldn't say I never come from a place of passion or anything like that. I find strength in it when I think of other trans women that've contributed to like historic erotic art. I enjoy the idea of people being down bad enough for me that they want to ensure my happiness and protection. I enjoy whenever I feel like I've over-achieve on a custom, or when I post something ppl go crazy for, or when I'm exactly somebody's type. I enjoy admiration. Not always necessarily, but overall I find it refreshing compared to like. A lot of the political hostility I grew up with and currently deal with. being celebrated is a nice change, even vindicating sometimes.

why tf are ppl allowed to own legendary pokemon? you shouldn’t be allowed to just HAVE historical beasts following you like a lillipup
i think it's less that people own them and more that they're tagging along for the ride for funsies. i mean some of them are literally gods yknow. like I don't think some random kid named N currently owns a giant electric dragon god that could kill him in one hit, I think the giant electric dragon god is just vibing in this realm and probably enjoys a good spicy poffin that that kid can supply easily. IDK why the legendaries usually choose the child vigilantes to hang out with but my guess is that they're like, oh this child was traumatized by having to fight terrorists singlehandedly. they can have a little godly company, as a treat

hiii so english isn't my first language and i'm learning more about gender and trans stuff and if i might be trans or something (i've been told i sound agender?? but that feels wrong), and something that confuses me, so i'm asking around abt it… "woman" used to simply denote afab, right? like a body type of ppl with a biological (not surgical) vagina & estrogen puberty. like a female dog. ppl say that it reduces women to their genitals, but what about with other animals? like female cat, female horse, etc, just bc we say "oh she's a girl" or "oh i have a male dog" doesn't mean we're saying they're only their genitals in that case, right…? a bitch is just a female dog, that's why it's a misogynistic word. misogyny is based on how ppl see someone without a penis as lesser, bc they don't have the power to forcibly penetrate and feel genital pleasure for it, they can't impregnate, they're "just a hole" etc. like so much of misogyny is just body-specific. the misogyny transfems experience seems terrible but also conditional? bc if they're found out to be amab they're treated as creepy men, so they then stop experiencing misogyny, they just face usually homophobia. meanwhile bio women (and transmascs who don't transition) have no exit door to the misogyny unless they transition and pass perfectly as male or something, and historically that wasn't an option. to me man & woman have always been neutral body types until i came across trans stuff, and i think the idea of gendered brains sounds sexist af. like gender seems like bullshit, i see me being a woman as just like being a female cat, i don't have ~womanly~ vibes in my brain, i was just born female and that's the least important thing about me, but male society made it weird. why should gender continue to be a thing? what does gender actually mean, if sexism was to be eradicated? is it bad if i view my womanhood as just a body type? most cis people i've talked to view their "gender" like this, as just a body type, like any other animal. they don't "feel" like one, they just have the body and aren't dysphoric about it. they might not always like it, but they don't have dysphoria about it, so they just… are. is that transphobic? i've heard mixed thoughts about it from trans ppl & activists, i'm just curious. feel free to ignore this lol ;;
Edit: A person in the replies has informed me that those may be are terf talking points disguised as questions to avoid suspicion so take this anon with a grain of salt. I'm keeping this post just in case anon is genuinely curious or something.
From what I see, reducing the societal importance of biological sex is indeed what's slowly happening, but it's definitely not in the same stage everywhere. It takes years for a person to unlearn something they were told their whole life, it takes generations for biological sex to lose importance.
I'll go over your questions:
Why should gender continue to be a thing?
I think you meant biological sex here. It's important to keep a little bit of it for medical purposes. Also imo it's possible for a culture to give it importance without ending up with a system that makes people feel awful sometimes.
What does gender actually mean, if sexism is to be eradicated?
I guess it'll just be a trait of a person in a similar way skin color is a trait of someone's body but like, with way more dimensions. It's kinda hard to put rules around this. Maybe it's just an answer to the question "What am I?".
Is it bad I view my womanhood as just a body type?
Lol do what you want it's your womanhood, your body and your you. There's nothing bad here and you're free to decide for yourself.
Is [not feeling much gender about your body] transphobic?
Doesn't feel transphobic to me, but anyone reading this is free to give their own take on this and the rest of what you said.
Idk what else to say so thanks for the ask and have a safe self discovery journey! Feel free to dm me or send another ask if you want to talk or me to add something to this.

answered ask under the cut, but spoilers for (idk a pla fic series that they didn't name and i've never seen), and also me being kind of a bitch. you are warned.
[ Anonymous: That is... really weird that you said that, because that fic series I mentioned *does* have two heroes, as learned by the mc via Vessa, who came after them, but it was still widely known at that point that there had been two. You've said you don't read much pla fic, so I'm pretty sure you've never read the series, which makes that a strange coincidence!
Spoilers for it, since you've said you don't mind those but for anyone who does, but Vessa says that likely the reason for there only being one hero in recent tellings, some 1000 years after the fact, was because the second hero became something of a "villain" afterward. Only she did it to send the other one, who was a faller, home. Arceus had kind of broken the world (on accident, it's implied), and when confronted by the two heroes and the ten soon-to-be nobles, it fixed things and left. But the faller hero had no way back to their own time and place, so the other hero purposefully broke things again. Not as bad as before, but it was still bad. That rift that they opened seems to have caused a bunch of other, much smaller rifts to open and close all over the place, similar to the distortion bubbles but not nearly as dramatic, which people seeking power took advantage of, once they learned they could, seeing as the second hero had done it. Which basically tore things apart and caused everyone to have to flee. Which is why the only things left of it are ruins and the two temples, and the only people are two small settlements with no apparent agriculture. Everyone else died or fled, and people only started coming back to their homeland not like recently-recently, but historically recently. The author goes kind of based on stuff from those Old Verse poems, and the small bits that Vessa gives you, as well as some other things I think, to help with their world building. ]
uh huh yeah the old verses. those things i definitely both know and care about and treat as canon and which are definitely not the most egregious example of me throwing pieces of pla canon into the trash. yep.
i'm ngl this is the main reason i don't like ppl going "oh hey that fic pitch/piece of analysis you just posted was already done somewhere else" cause it's like. well now i can't use this myself without feeling like i'm stealing, or like ppl are gonna assume i'm doing that. especially annoying when it's a bit of analysis/canon extrapolation that i don't even think is hard to come up with in isolation, cause it's not even that other person's Proprietary Idea, that's like original to them, they just happen to be the first/most well known/the one known by the specific person talking to me. like i'm sure this other fic is great and all but like i said in that post, i feel like "two heroes" is just something that's arguably implied, albeit maybe unintentionally, by the existence of more nobles than can fit in a pokemon team, specifically ten, and the ongoing diamond/pearl parallelism.
like i don't think any of my ideas are particularly unique or special, if anything my only distinction is being early to the jump (gestures vaguely at dr analysis), i just would prefer to keep them Mine when i write about them. yanno. it's not like i'm gonna get fined for plagiarism now or anything it's just like, annoying to me. idk the fic sounds fine i guess, i've never read it, and probably will never read it bc it sounds fairly convoluted and like it does too much justification legwork for my tastes, but now i have to have the plot of it hanging over me if i ever write two heroes/ongoing space-time distortion/vessa involvement/etc. the last bit being especially annoying bc i'm literally doing that right now and now it doesn't feel like Mine anymore, because someone else told me about it.
idk i'm just complaining at you i guess, sorry. this just frustrates me is all. i should probably put a disclaimer or warning somewhere but it's not like people read blog descriptions, or even the description of the askbox anymore, since the new blog viewer lets you bypass that now. ugh.

so i love laszlo, i would say he’s constantly fighting with guillermo for the spot of my favorite character on the show, and i just wanted to say thank you for bringing up the jack the ripper thing, it irritates me so much for so many reasons. as you’ve said, it was irresponsible on a meta level to include that joke and imo disrespectful as well. it’s doubly insensible irt the text itself bc laszlo does not have the character traits required to be capable of that (he’s bawdy sure but he clearly finds sex to be a beautiful thing!! why would he use it to harm and terrorize vulnerable women!) AND it doesn’t make sense chronologically. laszlo and nadja immigrated to new york in the 1860s i believe, the ripper murders happened in the 1890s, long after laszlo had promised he would never return to england. how would he have been there! i’m sure laszlo, nadja, and nandor came and went from the house as they pleased but i’m certain an absence like that would have been noticed. it’s just. EUUGGH. i’ll be the first to say laszlo is flawed and he’s clearly still unlearning a lot of stuff from his massively fucked childhood but like? no? his whole thing is he left england bc the ppl he was hanging around were being bigoted and xenophobic/classist to his wife? why would he be committing crimes that were a direct example of a mentality rooted in english classism and misogyny that made the murderer consider them to be less than human. he has some form of moral code, as skewed as it is. i HATE this joke with every fiber of my being and i hate that the public consciousness around these murders is not that they were uniquely horrific and should not be appropriated to be used in this manner.
sorry for taking a while to answer this, anon, yesterday was pretty rough for me, from a chronic/mental health standpoint, so I decided not to inflict myself on those around me. lmao
but yeah, I fully agree with all of this. I feel like the ripper jokes feel really tonally off from the rest of the show and don't match the characterization or timeline that ended up emerging as the show found its footing. some of that is the way that jack the ripper has been culturally separated from his actual crimes (which... I do not think is a good thing) and some of that, idk, might have been growing pains with the show...? I really don't know.
I have a lot of complicated feelings about true crime and the way we societally talk about serial killers anyway, but yeah, I would agree that jack the ripper has a uniquely weird spot in our cultural lexicon as like... almost a charming, mysterious serial killer? when the actual crimes were absolutely abominable misogynistic attacks against one of the most vulnerable segments of society. I think there's a dehumanization of the victims there that... idk, really bothers me. he's not a fictional boogeyman, and it bothers me when people treat him like he is because that relegates his victims to a sort of equally fictional facelessness. I hate that.
all that is to say... yeah, I cannot reconcile the actual historical ripper with laszlo for basically the reasons you've outlined here, and that's why I have to kind of headcanon those jokes away. I don't tend to be easily squeamish about dark subjects, but those jokes legit bother me.
like idk man there's fictional murder and there's real murder and one's a lot funnier than the other!

What do you think about the border crisis in El Paso? Do you think this is an invasion?
no, i dont think its an invasion, but i do think its a humanitarian crisis that is being handeled horribly by both the left and right
when i was 18ish i worked w a charity in immigration law, particularly w the refugee department helping those from southern america. id put together their asylum cases and send them forward. good people, but many horrible and desperate stories. people fleeing extreme poverty, people fleeing absolutely horrible cases of gang violence (heard plenty abt ppls relatives being disemboweled, hanged in public, etc), desperate families fleeing so their children could have better lives, desperate mothers and daughters fleeing trafficking and csa cases, the list goes on and on and on. it was heartbreaking
i think theres this conception that, idk, many of these ppl are "criminals" or "freeloaders" who just want the us to take care of them, or theres the other idea that this is some sort of staged invasion to destabilize the us, but that ain't really the case. Many, if not most, are just desperate people wanting better lives for themselves and their loved ones, and theyre desperate enough to risk their lives crossing through jungles and mountains and deserts, to use coyotes who may or may not traffick them. They sure as hell arent "freeloaders" either as the republicans would say, most of these are hard working ppl who want jobs, who get jobs, who very much contribute and pay taxes and the whole ordeal
if anything the immigration laws makes it Harder for them to contribute, bc of all the bullshit regulations like theyre not allowed to drive, not allowed to get xyz job, etc etc. which is why so many end up driving and working illegally - because they need to survive. unfortunately this makes things even more dangerous for them, bc being shoved in illegal jobs often means they are taken advantage of, underpayed, mistreated, etc etc. this also makes things harder bc these ppl, whove lived in the us for years upon years, some of them whove spend their entire lives since they were babies here, end up being "criminals" and being deported for some bullshit like a minor driving infraction
also. historically. this is very much their land. california/southern western america in particular was their land, but the whole damn country was their land before western europeans showed up and genocided everyone. i find it quite unfair to paint them as invadors when,,, well. if it werent for the american empire theyd very much have the right and ability to travel and return to the lands that some of them were displaced from, or to travel as they used to. these borders between america and the southern american states are not nature, theyre not set in stone, and they got made in the wake of a brutal, brutal history
its not nearly as easy as saying "why dont they migrate legally" either. many of these ppl are poor, many are in desperate situations which theyre trying to leave as soon as they can, and the immigration system is Very hard to get through. very hard. last i was working the backlog for immigration cases spanned 5-20 years, its absolutely Insane how hard it is to get citizenship here when you come from the south. Even for those who have daca or the dreamers act its stupidly, ridiculously hard for them to get citizenship in a country theyve been living in at times their whole lives, or decades upon decades
,,,,,this entire narrative is largely what is said of romanian and bulgarian workers in western europe as well. that theres too many, that its fucking western europe up, that were thieves of jobs, uncultured, we need to get out, and whatever the fuck else. except western europe wouldnt run without the labour, the ofter underpayed or all together unpayed labor of romanians and bulgarian, so its all rather hypocritical. they want our peoples out and they hate us, they treat our workers like shit, except theyd be doomed if our ppl werent working their fields, building their houses, and taking care of their eldery. same goes for america - So Much of this place is kept running by the labour of south americans, like so much of it
and also. on top of this i think its important to remember that part of the reason why so many ppl are desperate to migrate is Because of america in the first place, because of all the endless bullshit the us has done politically in southern america largely for the sake of their own profit, because of how much they've destabilized and fucked up so much of the region, because of the rampant corporations and capitalism and economic imperialism and globalizsm which have plunged so many places into severe poverty and dispair, the list goes on and on. america sure as hell doesnt have clean hands in this crisis, so maybe they shouldnt be surprised to deal with its reprocessions
a l s o. i have a personal bias bc i really like southern americans, generally speaking, as ppl. i live in california, so there's a lot of them here too - hell theyre the majority of the population i think?. some of my favorite people in this country frankly, theyre full of humour, theyre warm and kind and welcoming, soulful people, their cultures are beautiful, their food is very, very good, and ive always felt rather at home among them
all that being said, the left is doing a horrible fucking job handling all this. many democrat held cities and sanctuary cities are a damn mess, in so many regards. the homelessness and poverty and essentially slums and all this, it is really really bad, and a refugee/immigrant crisis on top of that makes it all a lot worse. when ppl yell that its ridiculous were taking other ppl when we cant take care of our own poor and homeless, i very much understand where theyre coming from. it is ridiculous, and a damn mess. democrats going on abt how "its not a humanitarian crisis" or whatever tf to be politically correct are just being stupid. it definitely is, and its putting a strain on the already failing system. thing is, i rly do think we can solve both of these issues - this country definitely has the damn money. these arent issues of lack of money, they are issues of the absolute incompetence of democratic government in this country (cali being a good example of this) and the stupid misallocation of money, as well as money stealing, as well as a falling and clogged beurocracy which talks a lot and does nothing and passes surface level look good measures which do nothing proper. this can be handeled in a more humaine, sane, rational and productive way,,,, if theyd get their shit together. something that definitely needs to happen is a reworking of the immigration system and law - so many ppl wouldnt be trying to enter "illegally" if it wasnt so stupidly hard to get citizenship or even a visa legally
..,,, and on the question of if us tax payer dollars should be spend for these ppl I think, first off, we dont need to raise taxes we just need to better use the tax money already there, and second off...... i think ppl need to spend a little bit more time putting themselves into others shoes. imagining what itd be like if they and their children were stuck in severe poverty with seemingly no hope or opportunities, what itd be like if they saw their own family members be killed and tortured in horrific ways, it their own lives and their childrens lives would the threathened....... wouldnt they hope someone would show enough humanity to help them? wouldnt they try to do just about anything for their sakes, and the sake of their children as well? i reckon they would
and. lastly. this idea of "invasion" sometimes comes w the idea that the democrats are trying to shift the vote in their favor by allowing immigrants who are gonna vote for them, but personally ehhh yea. not too sure abt that. its actually been shown that many south american immigrants are actually more conservative/republican than democrat

ever since @loamvessel reblogged that post about catharsis the other day i've been thinking about it again and i really believe the fact that there is this tragedy at the core of their relationship is what makes siuraine hit so much harder.
i feel like a lot of conversations (absolutely well meaning!!!) about representation in certain spaces end up focusing on what u shouldn't have happen to gay characters rather than like. what their gayness can add to their own identity and how they see the world? like the bury ur gays thing makes ABSOLUTE sense in a wider historical context and i get ppl have different limits around what they want to see happen to characters they love but also. do gay people not die lol? i guess what i'm trying to say is that by saying bad things can't happen to gay characters no matter what u kind of accidentally end up in a situation where gay characters are shut off from the full range of the human experience. idk sometimes it feels like writers can end up handling gay characters w kids gloves.
regardless of how dark wot on prime is going to take things, it's superrrr clear that judkins and co understand that the entire relationship is based around sacrifice and commitment in the face of nearly impossible odds. they treat moiraine and siuan like figures of legitimate dramatic interest, not just something for me to identify w on a surface level. season 2 suffering challenge !
