I saw the post about using blokada to block tumblr live on Android, and then you mentioned blocking domains. How do I block domains?

When you install Blokada 5 and launch it, there should be four tabs at the bottom of the screen. The 2nd-left tab has a symbol of three vertical bars, and when you tap on it, says Activity. From here you can view all the domains your phone is trying to connect to. Any domain that you see in green, you can tap on to add it to the Blocked list.

If you launch Tumblr then go back to the Blokada Activity tab, you should see all the domains it's trying to connect to, including ones like "auth.gateway.tumblr-live.com" (yes, your phone connects to this whenever you launch Tumblr, even if you never open the Tumblr Live page). Tap those suckers and block them! (and if they scroll out of view too quickly, use the search 🔍 at the top of the screen to filter for "tumblr" and you should see them all again.)

Smartphone Fixes: When to DIY or Call The IT Guy - Technology Org

Cell phone problems can be broken down into three sources: hardware problems, connectivity/service problems, and the one we hate to hear the most: user error. In all three causation situations, there are times when you can fix it yourself and times when you need to call a professional to fix your phone.

How to fix service/connectivity issues

Before you call your service provider, whether it is T-Mobile, Verizon, or one of the many other service providers, do a few things first:

Restart your device. They’ll ask you if you’ve tried that, so might as well do it before you call for help.

Check for outages in your area. How do you do that without a Wi-Fi connection? Open your device. Go to WiFi settings (this location varies by device and operating system) and look for your network. Not connected? Your internet may be down. Contact your provider. 

Did you pay your bill? Fair question. Stuff happens, and sometimes we miss payments or reminders. Make sure your account is up to date before you go into repair mode. 

Last, check your device’s signal strength. If you’re out and about and experiencing problems, it could be from a weak signal. Weak signals happen in rural and hilly areas, inside buildings, and around dead spots. Dead spots can be a little mysterious — some people notice them near airports and military bases, while others seem random.  

How to identify and fix user errors

No judgement here. Sometimes our devices do such strange things that we don’t consider the obvious. These are common forehead-slapping moments that we all experience when it comes to our smartphones not working: 

Did you check to see if you accidentally put your phone in airplane mode? It happens — check that first.

Similar to airplane mode, some phones have a do-not-disturb feature that can be accidentally triggered. Check that before you call for help. 

Is your phone fully charged? Again, sometimes it’s the obvious that slips by us, so it’s worth checking. Also, some phones have settings that, when your power dips below a certain threshold (say, 20%), your device turns off features. Make sure your phone is fully charged and out of low-power mode.

Is there bad weather in your area that would cause outages or lower signal strength?

Common smartphone hardware problems you may be able to DIY fix

Here are seven common smartphone problems that you may be able to troubleshoot on your own:

1. Slow performance

Sluggish smartphone? To fix this, try clearing the cache, deleting unused apps and files, and then restart your device. Make sure your operating system (OS) is up to date. Here’s how to free up space on an Android device. And here’s how to clear the cache, cookies and history from an iPhone.

2. Battery draining quickly

If your smartphone’s battery life is not what it used to be, check for power-hungry apps. Adjusting screen brightness, turning off location services when not needed, and disabling background app refresh can help conserve battery life. Also, consider replacing the battery if the phone is older. There are some camps that would caution against DIY battery replacement for a smartphone, and for good reason. When you open your phone, you might violate your warranty, plus you make your phone and its information vulnerable to theft and security issues. 

3. Overheating

Smartphones may overheat from extensive usage or exposure to sunlight or heat from the sun (left in a vehicle, for example). To fix this, experts recommend not using the phone while it’s charging, reducing screen brightness if it starts to feel warm, and close apps that you aren’t using. Keeping the phone out of direct sunlight and in a cooler environment can also help. Bring your phone inside to cooler temperatures, but avoid the temptation to put it in a freezer or refrigerator; sudden temperature changes aren’t good. That said, you might want to remove the phone’s case while it cools down, as some cases can heat up and hold heat too.

4. Connectivity issues (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular)

If you’re having trouble with connectivity, try turning the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular data off and then on again. Restarting the device can also resolve these issues. If the problem persists, try forgetting the network or unpairing the device and then reconnecting. If this doesn’t work, it’s time to call your cell service provider. 

5. Frozen screen or unresponsive touchscreen

If your phone’s screen is frozen or unresponsive, a simple restart often solves the problem. If the screen is physically damaged, however, it may need to be replaced. Screen replacement is something best left to professionals. 

6. Insufficient smartphone storage

When your phone runs out of storage, start by deleting unused apps, old photos, videos, and files. Using cloud storage for photos and documents can also free up space. If you have an phone with Android OS and an SD card slot, consider adding external storage. If you’ve got an iPhone, you won’t be able to do this. Apple wants you to use their cloud storage services, or buy a device with more built-in storage. 

7. Software glitches and bugs 

Occasionally, smartphones experience software issues. Updating your phone’s OS and apps can resolve many of these glitches. If problems persist, a factory reset might be necessary, but remember to back up your data first.

Remember, while many issues can be fixed at home, some problems may require professional repair, especially if they involve hardware malfunctions.

Howdy! Forgot to ask this on the quiz, so I'll ask here:

Do you ever get tired of the worldbuilding in your works? Like, do you ever want to include some whimsy magic, but the pre-set rules of the world don't allow you?

Also, I might have missed it, but is the concept of the "players code" a thing in your story? We talking admin panels, lag, etc

Ouuu those are two really good questions! I'll answer the code one first, since i think it's important to the dbhc story and something people should know if they didn't previously notice it:

My understanding/headcanon/conceptualization for Hermitcraft (and dbhc, by extension), is that the world and players are very much comprised of code. Code is to the fabric of their minecraft reality like atoms are to the fabric of our reality, and Admins (opped players, i suppose) have special access to and responsibility over this code: they can see into it and adjust or fix errors to ensure players are kept safe and worlds are managed well.

This is perhaps most obviously seen in the "A Delightful new Partnership begins!" Comic in which Xisuma notices something isn't sitting right in the code around him and takes out his 'control panel/admin panel/console/etc' to investigate. I talk about it in a little more detail in my breakdown post of this comic, where I talk about the possibility of 24 getting access to the code, scrambling it up, and not really knowing how it works enough to put things back right. It's also implied that he may be manipulating/messing with Xisuma's memories by deleting parts of X's player code (I note that i didn't want the glitch effects to necessarily be associated with android-y effects), as we see him forget parts of this encounter and constantly shifting in and out of place as he gives unsettlingly neutral/positive/encouraged answers to a manipulative and intimidating Android 24.

I also love incorporating like, console commands into the comics and au :D such as '/clear queued visual cache' from Don't Let It Reach The Heart :] Though i know it's different since he's an android hehe

I also just think code integration into a 'realistic' interpretation of Minecraft-based stories opens the door for really fun translations of Video Game experiences (i.e., interpreting lag as something like disorientation, disassociation, or misalignment between a player's code and the world's). It's super fun to think about so I love making it part of these stories :D

Regarding worldbuilding! I don't think I've really grown tired of it, as far as I know (assuming you're primarily asking about dbhc, but i would say the following goes for my original works, too): When it comes to storytelling and worldbuilding, I have a very very, uh, logically-tracked mind about things? The reason things happen and the way things work all need to make sense within whatever system i've chosen/come up with/been working in, so I often have a lot of fun (or experience a lot of turmoil) trying to make events and characterizations fit within that world. If I ever have a new idea that doesn't fit in that pre-determined set of rules, I either: move on pretty quickly, not lingering on things that wouldn't be possible so I can find ideas or variations of the non-conforming thought that *would* work, OR try to think of fun ways to make a non-conforming idea work by developing a new rule that still coexists with previous ones (i.e., maybe there's an exception in the way the world works for reason x/y/z, and the more i develop that possibility, it could make previous characters or ideas more complex in turn! It's like a very fun puzzle to me, and it's why i love storytelling so much :D

Do you know of a decent place to see which phones still work well after years? I'm noticing pretty damning performance issues with my Xperia meanwhile my razer phone 2 is still chugging along!

Longevity is kind of double edged, there's update support and there's raw performance. For update support, there's EndOfLife which has details for a few brands, and you can otherwise usually find a recent list pumped out by an aggregator site if you search "Update Support <Brand> Phones". Just because support is long doesn't mean it'll necessarily run well, (Samsung has long support on even their slowest phones) but it's a start.

For performance, the flagship phones with high end processors and tons of RAM do a lot to future proof a phone against the increasing resource demands, so your best bet is often just benchmark results relative to those.

GSMArena will usually have GFXbench or 3DMark and GeekBench results for phones. Versions change often but, you can usually look at like, the contemporary Samsung S or S Ultra whatever which is pretty reliably one of the fastest fast phones of its generation and see how what you're looking at stacks up. e.g. here's a Nothing 3a pro vs the Samsung S25.

Huge performance gap! GeekBench and AnTuTu are sort of holistic usability benchmarks, while 3DMark is mostly gaming focussed. Here's my phone (Pixel 8) vs its contemporary S24. Now that I mention it, contemporary pixel is also a good "middle of the road" benchmark for recent generations.

No good graphics comparison, but you can see, ~65% performance give or take in general use. This also shows you how big the inter-generation gap was this time, pretty big!

Another thing that matters more than you might think is storage. Modern phones use eUFS 2.x or eUFS 3.x, both of which are high performance flash standards and which are a huge step up over older eMMC storage. Slow flash like eMMC dramatically affects app performance and only makes it worse if you run out of memory and have to hit swap. Snappy app transitions under Android involve a lot of careful memory management and swap usage so slow storage can really highlight that. GSMArena will usually list the flash standard a phone is using.

Memory has a much narrower spread these days, even the cheapest new budget phone will usually have 6GB of RAM, but getting 8 or 12GB will help reduce swapping and improve caching for application launching and multitasking.
