Oh Erek is so cool actually what. Why did i dislike this book? Marco being marco? the ending of it? probly some of both i guess but it's not bad.

Oh that's why. Such 'intelligent' beings but they haven't yet figured out their definition of violence. I mean sure Erek isn't hurting the Yeerk in his head but he is stealing its memories and keeping it from living the life it intended to live, or any life at all. Like....that's a form of hurting/violence babe. I could think of a million ways the chee could help win this war without the fancy crystal, the first of which being running full defense. Go to a battle and just straight up be an animorph shield. no violence necessary beyond the enabling of it. Or be spies. Erek is already doing that and could be huge intelligence help for the animorphs. Could also probably set up communication with andalites or maybe other aliens to get allies in on this. like. come on. I know this needed to be a one off but like....seriously?

Okay i get why applegate included the paragraph about violence taking pieces of you and leaving scarred memories that never leave you or whatever but like. Erek you were a slave and have lived thousands of years. You've never been a war medic? Never saw the brutality of what a slave master would do? The tortures of the middle ages or whatever? That's gotta be fresh still too, and you rewrote your programming to be able to stop that from happening in your presence ever again. You're going to go back to nonconsensual pacifism without even a compromise because of 10 seconds of blood? And why haven't the Chee gone into politics? their definition of violence would allow for them to get in there and make for more peace all over the world? wtf have u guys been doing you assholes? ugh these guys make for too many plot holes.

The Chee are frustrating, aren't they?

To me they're frustrating in that I feel like they're almost missing something that would tilt them into being a better element of the story, but it's not quite there.

I really want to know how the Pemalites defined violence in their programming (it would give us insight into the Pemalites themselves, too).

Or the limits of their AI in general. If they work like real "AI" they'd probably have some limits to how creatively they can think about getting around their problems. I know Erek says the Pemalites created them to be their equals rather than as robot workers, but he also says the Pemalites were the real creative force and doesn't say but sort of implies that the Chee don't make more of themselves. The only Chee around are the few hundred that the Howlers didn't wipe out. They are machines. In the end they are limited in the ways they can problem solve and I can't help but wish we'd gotten a better idea of what these limits were.

Maybe a better look into the limits of how Chee think could make them less frustrating an element? Barring that, maybe we could have gotten more of a look into the nonviolent sabotage they managed (taking longer to fix a downed communications system than needed, nudging people away from going deeper into the Sharing when possible)?

Heck, I wish it explored how the Chee feel about dogs being carnivores! Wolves hunt. Dogs hunt. They preserved the Pemalites through the Earth animal that looked most like them but that animal was a predator. Rotating the Chee programming to figure out what's going on in there.

Erek's reaction to the violence he could do was good. I can see why he wouldn't want to do more. He also knows that the human and Hork-Bajir hosts died just as violently as their yeerks. He knows he's killed innocents in his ten seconds of reprogramming. He knows he could do that again. I'd have loved to have had that scene address Erek wondering if he could trust his judgement on when and how to kill.

Idk. The Chee continue to be important up through the endgame, so I wish they were better delved into. I don't have the right words to explain why they frustrate me so much.

I wish I could explain why I kept on with the hunt. Sometimes the animal brain takes over for a while and sort of overwhelms the human mind. But that's not what was happening to me. I wasn't overwhelmed. I was just into it. p. 72

Hmm, Marco, it could be the stress of finding out that The Sharing is gunning for your dad. And a new morph is a good excuse to just let that anger out without having to take the blame for your actions.

Honestly this gets at my chiefest complaint/frustration/discomfort with fandom as a whole. Which is: in their rush to defend the artistic merit of fanworks I think a ton of people have really valorized transformation and remixing and reinterpretation in and of themselves, when imo those are all quite neutral actions. When done well, they can expand and build upon and subvert meaning in really powerful and thought-provoking (and fun!) ways. When done poorly, they are just as likely to flatten and oversimplify and decontextualize and completely erase meaning. The simple act of changing something does not imbue the choice to do so with creative validity. It is entirely possible for a cover song to be bad (or just boring!). To exactly the same degree that it is possible to transform a pretty shallow and straightforward work into something deeper and more nuanced and subversive, is possible to transform a work into a vastly shallower and less interesting shadow of itself. As with nearly everything in art, it's all about the execution!

But the second you voice this position (which should honestly be a pretty uncontroversial one imo), you get people shrieking at you about being gatekeep-y and pretentious and betraying the sacred fandom etiquette of Don't-Like-Don't-Read.

And like...listen. I was not raised in a barn. I am 150% capable of quietly back-buttoning out of a fanfic I think is bad or boring - which is exactly what I do when I encounter them - and I am obviously not advocating for stupid ships wars or any kind of harassment or leaving hatemail in people's AO3 inboxes. (Which some people will also accuse you of the second you say anything less than lavishly positive about fandom, in true piss-on-the-poor fashion.) Literally all I am saying is that you can't have your cake and eat it too - that if fandom and fanworks (in the broadest sense) have artistic merit then fandom and fanworks (in the broadest sense) are fair game for artistic critique. Which means, in practice, that I can go on my own blog and make a post exactly like this one - critiquing broad trends, or stating that some interpretations are bad actually, or pointing out that subverting or talking back to or reading against the grain of canon is very different from simply ignoring it, or saying "fandom's culture of collage/remix/fuck-canon-I-do-what-I-want can lend itself to to really creative and interesting art but also to a lot of really bland homogenized cut-n-paste art, not to mention some pretty troubling decontextualization." And that if you feel this rains on your personal parade, you are then free to DLDR by back-buttoning out of my blog and/or blocking me so you never have to see my hot takes again, rather than clamoring in my notes about how I should let people enjoy things.

Thoughts on The Android (Animorphs #10) pt 1

It really should have been. I don't really love this book or the addition of the android race to the canon, or Marco's narration that much (it's a bad haircut dude you'll live) tbh..but i do love Consequences. The battle at the end of this one is so fucking harrowing, so I suppose i'll give it a reread.

See.. that might be a you thing Marco, you poor traumatized boy who nearly just got run over by a car. I'm glad you even sought out a fun concert in morph but you can't judge people about their bad ideas about non-necessary morphing again. And neither can Jake.

After horrible termite time, are you really going to go on thinking Rachel never gets scared? like i'm sure he's exaggerating, but if he's shown to be observant enough to say she shakes her head when frustrated but not observant enough to see that she gets just as scared as anybody and covers it with anger/reckless courage while he covers his fear with jokes...like. come on Marco i know you're smarter than that.

Well that's odd. I get keeping to the core group is easier for writing, but like...Ax's input is often really helpful (and likely would be in this situation) and how can a morph be overused anyway? wouldn't it be better for him to get very familiar with his human morph and practice it often?

Maybe that's why Marco thinks Rachel is so fearless. I imagine he's been furious much longer than Rachel has had good reason to be, and knows how the aftereffects make him feel emptier than before. He also bottles things up even with Jake. Maybe Rachel and Cassie talk to each other about this stuff more than Jake and Marco do.

Flies have weird eyes and they already have those for surveillance. sounds easier to me than spider but whatevs. oh Jake is morphing fly! why not all do that? maybe they needed a wider variety of eye types?

We had decided to meet with Erek at his house. We had not decided to trust him completely. Jake, Cassie, Ax, and I were going to the meeting. Rachel and Tobias stayed outside as backup. Rachel was all primed to use her grizzly bear morph if we called for help. p. 93

This is actually smart. Marco is already compromised so of course he is going to the meeting. Ax is needed as their alien/tech expert. Jake is the leader so he probably wants to be there to make any calls if needed. Cassie is good at reading people. Rachel is the firepower so her hanging back in case they need a rescue makes sense. Tobias is a hawk so he might as well stay back and not get caught.

They aren't letting their whole fighting force be known at once. They are keeping some of their cards off the table.
