unsung wip? fuckface maybe? 😅 it's very silly, i don't know about unsung, though... my fav thing abt my own writing is definitely when i think of a cool idea and get to giggle about it excitedly to myself

hmmm. can't decide! i have the most experience with wind (almost 70K, holy shit 😭) but honestly i love them all. each have little personality quirks & behaviours that make it fun! though i don't know how good at any of it i am, lol

pantser vs plotter? depends on the story! i have this wip called yestermorrow that has been driving me up the wall for months and months, and it's got more than 20K in outlining but less than 5K in actual drafts. lmao. primordials is planned, and the second half of the cursebreaker has all been (loosely) planned. but everything else i just make up as i go! not in the sense that i open a blank document and then see what comes out, but in the sense that i have a vibe or general idea, and then i start there and flesh it out as the story goes

what does that look like for me? well. the plotting usually starts with a rant / ideas dump, and slowly accumulates more and more different ideas until i can start fixing them together into something resembling a story. and then once i feel like i know what the story is about, i estimate chapters, and split up plot points, fiddle with the pacing, and then flesh out each chapter into an instruction manual for when i come back later to write. fairly standard method of plotting i think? i don't know. how do other people outline???? help

Who is your favorite character to write, and what do you like about how you portray them?

(I’ll be honest, if anyone looking at this DOESN’T already know that then I need to start mass posting Four art again -)

I like that I get to explore all the potential complexities of his personality! Unless he’s the focus of fic, I find a lot of people default to ‘blacksmith, reasonable, short’ as his entire personality, or if you’re lucky ‘secretly a gremlin’.

And he’s not, ok? At the LEAST he’s four gremlins in a trenchcoat, and there’s so much more there to work with. Even if you don’t assign the FS manga to him (AND WHY WOULDN’T YOU???), there’s still a cartload of potentially fun shit!

Hiding his splitting ability (why? Scared? Waiting to reveal at the most dramatic moment?)

At the moment, it’s my Reconnect the Chain AU. I’m getting very excited for it, probably because I only have a few chapters left to write before I can post it!

What is an unsung WIP of yours you’d like to promote?

Idk if it’s unsung per se, but I’m very proud of Sometimes It Takes Death to Make the Truth Come To Light. At the time I posted it, I wished I’d had more time to do more with it, but I’m actually quite proud of it upon rereading it. It features Legend and Time being related, Sir Raven, time travel things, lots of thoughts about the Fallen Hero and Downfall Timeline, and an assassination attempt!

A little lore about this fic because it is one of my biggest accomplishments: I wrote it in 3 days while I was on a school trip!

What do you like most about your own writing?

Oh gosh, I don’t really know. I suppose, I’m quite good at writing narratation? I just really like getting into the characters' heads and writing from their POV (even if I do write only in 3rd person).

Who is your favorite character to write and what do you like about how you portray them?

That’s so hard 😭 do you know how many characters I write? How can I choose a favorite???

At the moment, though, I’ve got to go with Legend since I’m mostly writing LU right now. I like how jaded and tired I can make him, and I also really like writing him as a secretly touch-starved traumatized boy because I like giving him all the comfort lol.

Are you a pantser, a plotter, or something in-between? What does that process look like for you?

In-between, but leaning more toward plotter. I have a million notes documents, especially for my longer WIPs. The only problem with this is, I spend so much time outlining I end up getting tired of the fic or too overwhelmed because the plans get so big!

As for the planning/writing process… I usually tend to have some vague idea of where I want the fic to go. Maybe I have whole scenes or arcs plotted out in my head. Sometimes (like with Reconnect the Chain and The Adventures of Uncle Alfon) I can work with just what's in my head. Otherwise, I usually make some sort of light outline (Cupcakes for Harmony part 3, for example, has a list of characters and things I want them to do with Harmony). So usually it's that and just a list (which can be as detailed or as vague as I like it) of what I want to happen and then I just get into writing. They typically look something like this:

There's no guarantees I hit all the points in my outline, but I try to hit as many as I can.

My more intense outlining usually also involves outlining plot arcs, character motivations, character arcs, and the general "point" of a chapter (or, since I mostly use this for my Kingdom Hearts fics, world). My KH fics often end up being the ones that are over-planned, but to be fair I'm working with 50+ characters and a million plot threads at once.

If I'm stuck on a chapter, I'll make what's essentially a plot synopsys of the chapter if I really need to, but usually, if I have a written outline, the outline is a mixture of a jumble of notes and a vague idea of what direction the plot's going.

how do you feel about people who aren't from the appalachian mountains trying to practice appalachian folk magic?

A tricky question to start off with, I like it! This answer may be a bit ramble-y, and I apologize! Some aspects of AFM are perfectly okay to be practiced anywhere! The concepts, the bible verses, the odd methods of protection and healing...some of the spirits. The only thing I can think of to stop some people is that some ingredients, some items, some spirits or haints to protect from are hard to find outside of Appalachia! Otherwise, as long as you have your heart in the right place, you study up on the region and the history? I say go for it, we need more practioners. Because the old folk? They won't be around forever. But in saying this: I know my opinion isn't everyone's. I know some people who would rage at me, hell, I've been banned from certain groups for saying that I am okay with people learning. If someone refuses to teach you? Honor that, anger-inducing it may feel. The reason some people fight so hard to keep AFM within the mountains is because well...look at us historically. Historically speaking...when outsiders came in? Hell followed. Years of near slave-labor to mining companies, the drug epidemic, crushing our old ways of life and making a good chunk of them illegal? Destroying our land for profit, kicking people off of their land to "preserve" it? Purposefully making us a butt of a joke into some...stupid, inbred, ruthless, drunkard of a people just because we paid less tax on whiskey when we made it ourselves? I could go on and on.

Hey! Thanks for the ask! Tumblr is being weird with notifications so I only just saw this, so sorry for the delay!

One of the most interesting facts about The Princess, The Pauper and the Pirate is about one of the main characters, Kai.

He was originally part of a trio of ghost hunting ocs who i eventually repurposed into the three protagonists of PPP, and his original name was Elias.

I originally changed them into fantasy characters about six months before I had my gender crisis, and when I realised that I was a boy, I realised that the name that fit me most was the same as my favourite oc - Elias

Yeah, I named myself after my favourite badass tiefling pirate and it honestly inspired me to keep writing since I loved him so much

I'm stoked for Uncanon Fates!!!!! Always good to see the noncanon Link's get attention! 🥹 Curious, if you're okay with sharing, which Link's are going to be in this AU?

Thank you so much! I’m okay with sharing most of the Links-and most of the non-Link cast that will show up eventually. I’m just keeping 3 of them a secret for now.

Here are the first batch of Links(8 of them) + two others we’ll meet and some info:

Rinku - mid-20s to early-30s, he lost count while in prison - he/him - First Hero: Basically the main character of this story, but we won’t focus on only his POV, just mainly on him since he’s kinda the reason this whole mess started. He generally doesn’t like people(he’s got some trust issues)but he’s always somewhat polite to new people.

Sir Raven - 26ish - he/thon but they/them is fine - From the OoA manga: That’s right I’m making a Link. Don’t call him that though, he won’t answer. He’s a bit of a goofy and mysterious guy in the manga. I’m making him more mysterious and goofy. He has the magical rings from that game as well, his favorite is the Green Ring. He’s also bad at keeping track of time.

Calli - 18.4 - he/maybe they??/maybe she????(he’s still trying to figure stuff out) - Age of Calamity: He can’t speak and and tries to come off as emotionless, but his personality still shines through his blank exterior. He’s cooked a lot before, but it wasn’t until after the war he’s tried to make it an actual hobby, because he never really had much of those before.

Trill - never ask a fairy her age - she/her - Cadence of Hyrule: She’s CoH!Link’s best friend and an assist fairy. She used to assist him with speaking-and the whole Assist Mode in the actual game-but since he doesn’t need that anymore, she chooses to help Calli with speaking instead.

Cadence - 16 - he/him - Cadence of Hyrule: He’s a bit quiet, but can talk on his own when needed. He can’t be killed-although he can die of old age-and will not let anyone know of this fact. For now. He also has a large hoard of diamonds on hand, and will jump at the opportunity to get more.

Kori - 15.25 - he/him - The CD-i games: Can not stand reflective surfaces for a multitude of reasons, only goes near bodies of water if he knows it’s safe. Does not tell anybody about this. He’s very cheerful and friendly, and has picked out most of the other Links’ nicknames by himself. His winged helm hides his eyes, which look quite uncanny to those that see them.

Cart - 15.23 - he/him - The Zelda Cartoon: Not as bad as in the actual cartoon. Somewhat lazy when it comes to anything other than heroing, flirting with Zelda, and napping. Complains a lot. Just generally insufferable, as teens kinda are. The universe will not allow him to swear, even though he really wants to. Somehow best friends Kori.

King Gustaf - 46 give or take a few years - he/him - The Minish Cap: There’s this fan theory that King Gustaf was actually the Hero of Men in the MC, which is what I’m going with for Uncanon Fates. He’s very wise, but also the most excited about this whole thing. It’s been decades since he’s done anything adventurous. He loves making new friends. He’s one of the first kings of Hyrule, and also holds the Light Force, also known as the Triforce of Wisdom.

Triforce of Wisdom - as old as the land itself i guess - does not care is literally a magical prism - Cartoon Zelda+CD-i games(at least the first two): Yeah I’m making the triforce talk. Less rhyming but still gives out vague advice. Currently in the king’s possession. Kori and Cart flock to him like birds.

Linkku - around 19 mentally, he’s basically a demigod he can live for a long time - they/he - Ancient Hero from TotK: Can’t say much about what he does in the comic, but I can tell you a bit of the made up backstory I made up. They’re Rauru and Sonia’s son and are being raised by a surviving Zonai and a Gerudo. Lesbians. His adventure mainly consisted of trying better the relationships between the Hylians and the Gerudo and fighting off what currently remained of Ganon’s evil magic.

After the first two-three-maybe even four if I feel like the characters aren’t fleshed out enough-chapters are done, they’ll be meeting some of the Hyrule Warriors cast-HW Link and Linkle will be the only Links there-who will be first briefly introduced in an interlude, and then the 3 Links I mentioned before at the start will come in and make you feel things. Impa, Zelda, and another character will also be there. That’s it for now, thanks for the ask.

silk; what outfit makes you feel confident?

a tough question lately! I've been super dysphoric these past few weeks so really nothing but Hiding in Huge Blanket has worked; however typically I feel most confident in tactical/practical clothes. I love a fun outfit but I don't think confidence is what they bring to the table. when carrying a hammer, two rolls of bags, a sandwich, a journal, a spare hat, three rings of keys, gloves and handwarmers, and a gait belt in my pockets won't cut it it's time to fake it until I make it. behold!

oasis; dream destination?

I'd really like to go to Argentina one day, but honestly I'm super excited about the trip I'm taking with my family soon. you'll have to find out where that is after it stops being a beacon to my location! I'm stoked :D

I like punk music and rococo fashion... where does this land me?

1975; if you could time travel to any time period, what would it be and why?

I know it would create a rift, but if we forget about that and pretend everything is safe, I'd like to see my future kids and find out what mistakes I should avoid as a parent. it stresses me out and I'm not even close to having kids! I don't even know if I want them! everyone grows up so messily and I don't know if I can take that on....

Hi there, its Athena for Sunday Ask-A-Thon week 2 at @ask-a-thon: Is there any advice you would give to a new writeblr or a friend/ an oc who wanted to get into writing?

A few things, actually! There's some pretty simple and basic steps you can take to really sink your teeth into writing.

Don't be afraid to write small! It doesn't matter if your work is 500k words, 250k, 10k, 2k, or just 500 words long. It's your work, and that's worth being proud of! So if you want to write but don't feel like you can put together the full story in your head, just pick your favorite part of it, find a starting point for that and put a little of it into words. Even if it's only ten words, it's experience and it's progress!

If your project is big, set a reasonable daily goal. If you can usually knock out a couple thousand words a day, then set a goal of about 1.5k. It's easy enough to be within reach, but not so low that you feel unproductive calling it quits there. If you have a slower pace and average around 200-300 words a day, that's fine too! Terry Pratchett only wrote 400 a day and look where it got him! Set reasonable goals, and you'll make progress at a solid, steady pace, I promise.

Take breaks from the serious work. It's important, believe me. Nobody can sit there and write seriously for hours a day, multiple days a week, for any length of weeks, without getting burnt out or sick of their own effort. Whether "taking a break" means stopping writing entirely for a day or two, or if it means writing a silly, goofy little non-canon ficlet, do something to relax your writing muscles. You'll be glad you did.

Writing for you is the most self-sustaining method, but if you're like me and you just CAN'T write for yourself with any degree of satisfaction, write for one person. Can be your mom, a friend, a role model, or a hypothetical person you don't know exists for sure. But pick someone, someone important to you, and write for them. You don't need to write for thousands, or millions, or even just hundreds. You just need to write for one, single person. And if you can't be that person for yourself, remember you always have at least one other person who will read your work and love every word.

This is the big one...BE YOU! Write like YOU. Nobody picks up a Terry Pratchett book and expects to find Stephen King's writing, nor does anyone pick up one of Tolkien's works expecting to find Rick Riordan's writing. If people are reading your work, it's because they want to read it the way YOU wrote it. So don't ever let anyone else tell you what style to write in, or what perspective, or even what format. Write YOUR way. The right crowd WILL find you, and they will ADORE you.

What inspires you to write? What is something that keeps you writing even when that inspiration falls short?

I'm doing well @ask-a-thon still healing but each day is better! I'm just glad to get back to work and doing the hobbies I enjoy.

What inspires me? A lot of things actually but I'll compress that all down to one word: Vibes. Regardless of what inspires me if there isn't a vibe or feeling I want to reach for then nothing gets written. And when I say vibes I mean it in the nebulous sense. It's not a genre, not a trope, not a theme, it's a vibe.

To give an example Homesick is a little one off where in the vibe changed a couple times. It was at first meant to be a spooky kind of story about going back to your childhood home and ooo scary things actually happened. But, while I was writing it I was filled with ideas of: A worn down barn in winter, liminal spaces (empty houses specifically), old photos with the edges tattered and taped together, the overcast sky just before a storm, those hours after the party has finished and you need to clean up, a home left to the world on a hill where the screen door slaps in the breeze, and those moments where you wake up in fright and to comfort you your brain puts you right back in your childhood bed.

See there are all these things for sure yeah, but it is a feeling I want to capture in my words. So i guess it's kind of like a mental moodboard but without the pictures. I've tried to start a story with a concrete thing like "Tornado green skies" but I don't tend to get very far lol.

As for what keeps me writing even when the inspiration falls short? That I can write absolute hot garbage and that is okay! Not everything I do is posted, and that is how it should be for people. Sometimes you just need to write the most sloppy slop slop you can think of to get it out of your head so you can move on. And I love it! Which kind of leads me into the other things that keeps me going. That I can always walk away from this and come back when the feeling is right. I don't have to force myself to meet a deadline or quota.

I can feel myself getting rambly so I'll stop here.
