oh hell yeah. so more generally, i view top/bottom dynamics as characterization shorthand, which is not how absolutely everyone thinks about it but it's true for me. i think people who really care about dynamics tend to sort themselves into two characterization camps for a given character, and usually i fuck with one camp more than the other. also when i think about the roles of giving vs receiving there are, in fact, Vibes-based decisions i make about that.

also complicating this is that we tend to conflate topping with domination and bottoming with submission. and in some ways the use of top/bottom dynamics for me overlaps with dom/sub but not always, though it's also that there's a vulnerability in bottoming that is distinct from the vulnerability of topping. i'm not nearly educated enough to give a real seminar on dynamics and bdsm roles and how those intersect in yaoi and fandom so my only credentials i can give here is that i have lots and lots of kinky sex lmao

anyway. lawlight!

if i'm being completely honest i can see them switching as part of their inherent power struggle. like to be completely true to how they're characterized in canon. i blame this entirely on the time speaks fic for selling me so good on lawlight switching, but i'm also sure that most lightlaw content won't really appeal to me just because light yagami....does not top....to Me.

searching for how to justify this that isn't just "pure vibes" but i genuinely think he would be a strict bottom if he ever took the stick out of his ass. like yeah okay he's a genocidal megalomaniac but do you ever think of how many choices he has to make? how in control he has to be at all times? decision fatigue is killer and i think being the one who has to receive, has to lie back and take it, would be hot, humiliating, and cathartic for him specifically. he'd get off on the asymmetry of it. also he can't fucking stand the people who submit to him (misa, mikami). like. he doesn't really get horny over subservience as much as the conquering so like. yanno.

also i think being on top is just. expected of him? light yagami the honor student is cisgender and heterosexual and he has a hot girlfriend he'll settle down with and pop out 2.5 kids with. i think he'd be sick of it. combine it with the social stigma of taking it up the ass and you have a perfect storm of internalized homophobia and sexual repression that would mean light finds bottoming preferable, and hates it.

also the only person he would ever let top him, much less dominate him (i think light's feelings on domination and submission are even more convoluted than on topping and bottoming. suffice it to say he's a power bottom until he gets his brains fucked out first) has to be L. just because L is his equal, his rival, the only guy who could stymie him. he wouldn't let L top as much as he would cede that victory to him if it came down to it. also he'd probably get off on making L go crazy via his hot clenching asshole. anyway.

i feel a lot less strongly about L when it comes to dynamics. L can go either way, for me. i don't think he'd really want light up his ass but he'd enjoy the experience of bottoming, and he doesn't mind being on top. even if he's lazy about it unless light's needled him first. and maybe seeing kira fall apart on his cock is ego stroking spank bank material for him too.

there's also the fact that the uke in any yaoi pairing is gonna get woobified and whumped and sexually tormented by fandom at large (which i know a lot of people have feelings about, lmao). between the two of them i much prefer watching light get that treatment than L so i avoid bottom!L content.

So something I'm really interested in (mostly for my Bandee x Marx bias) is that comic with Marx and Bandee interacting, like, what's their relationship in this au, how'd they get to that point and heck, what was even happening? also it kinda seems like Bandee may be the main guy in this au or is just really important which makes me happy as Bandee isn't treated the best by Nintendo at all (hell, Sakrai said he didn't add Bandee into smash because he didn't like him) so seeing Bandee get the spotlight always brings me joy

And about the Meta and Galacta comic, it seems like Bandee plays a factor here too, with the mention of him being what gets the most reaction out of Meta and that makes sense because canonically Bandee is the weakest of the four and most likely to die quite easily, so it would make sense for the others to be protective of him

Bandee is, i think maybe obviously, my most specialist little guy ever and everything i make is likely about him in one way or another. so you're correct that he is indeed the main guy in both these AUs; he is the central protagonist which i think he deserves!!

(but he does also go through the angst blender a bit, just like... a warning. i adore happy endings but before that i do tend to meat-grind my faves pretty well in the drama machine.)

clockwork heart is actually a spin-off of awtdy (we do a little AU-ception in my household) which is our* primary au. (*a lot of my au work and headcanons are fleshed out very collaboratively with my girlfriend! the initial concept for awtdy was her idea, which i then very meanly shoved my bandee-important agenda into lmao)

awtdy sets this basic alternate world-state: during the Haltmann invasion, Galacta Knight defeats Meta Knight in battle and makes a wish on Star Dream to trade places.

this causes all sorts of terrible fun problems for everybody and basically gives rise to a bad timeline that a lot of folks do not come out of intact (rip floralia)

the Meta Knight vs Galacta Knight comic covers an important turning point in the story, where Meta Knight lets slip that he cares about Bandee the way he cares for Kirby. Meta Knight has an especially strong reaction to this for two reasons:

one is because, as you said, of the three remaining heroes Bandee is the most vulnerable-- seasoned and experienced fighter he may be, but against someone like Galacta Knight? 💦 he's still ultimately just a mortal dude. this obviously puts him at terrible risk, because Galacta Knight also considers him far more expendable than Kirby.

"i'll take good care of him" is transparently a threat and not actually... you know, kind.

secondly is because (unbeknownst to Galacta Knight) Bandee uniquely remembers Meta Knight. he knows that the timeline is screwed up and Galacta Knight is not meant to be there, and is actively working to rescue his real dad mentor. Meta Knight knows that if he's found out, Galacta Knight won't hesitate to kill him.

suffice to say the guilt of this would drive him capital i Insane!

as for the Marx "hurt like hell" comic, I am actually sorry to have to tell you that that scene is their first ever interaction in this au! 😂 in this alternate version of the story Marx is also aware of the timeline fuckery (due to his existence as an eldritch, temporal little creature) and he tracks Bandee down late in the game with a risky trade offer; which Bandee refuses. that's what's pictured in the comic!

it goes on for quite a long ways after that; though I don't know if it'll tickle your ship dynamic quite right because Marx is mildly antagonistic towards Bandee (and everyone) the whole time. so while they are cursed to be Stuck Together By The Narrative they are not really close or even particularly friendly.

they do indeed interact in it quite a lot, and I personally think Marx would gladly shoot his shot if he was offered it; but Bandee is neck-deep in a different ship for the entirety of awtdy and is especially miserable/pining as hell throughout clockwork heart.

but that's okay because Bandee is, uh-- totally fine!! he's normal. he's fine. he's very very fine and things will be very very okay.

Please ramble about Tedstina I’m a total truther lol. Their chemistry was SO intense and palpable from the second Teddy stepped on screen and I agree about them not getting together whilst Teddy was mentoring her but I always thought the Henry plot was a perfect lead in to them developing something long term. Like in my head Cristina dumps Owen after he makes her lie about Henry and in Teddy’s grief and Cristina’s guilt they get closer, eventually sleeping together and then dating. Out of all the couples something about them both being so stubborn but also so clear eyed, ambitious and somewhat cold makes them the most likely to last in my opinion. A little line with Burke but this time they actually know and like each other lmao. And it would definitely be a little twisted since Cristina technically ‘killed’ Henry and then dated his widow but also it’s no darker than other weird romance plots on greys lol. Plus they would’ve been hot as hell 😭

yess you get it. okay but be forewarned this is a true ramble- it may only be vaguely coherent as i’m just going off the cuff.

exactly the chemistry is genuinely insane!!!! the thing about greys that bums me out in the early seasons is that they had an aversion to making any of their main female characters canonically queer. like, i get it, bc getting the callie storyline out there was an uphill battle. but it’s like they want to be explicitly clear all the time that cristina and meredith are both very very Straight. and that’s a whole other thing i could go on about. all this to preface that i think if the show aired now, cristina would be canonically openly queer right out the gate.

by the time teddy came along, it was still pretty early in the owen/cristina and so he hadn’t really done anything yet to make him quite so hate-able. and after hahn there was a big gap left where cristina was sorely lacking in a good mentor. burke was almost a good mentor but then you know they started canoodling and he eventually got frustrating. hahn just straight up refused to teach cristina despite her clear enthusiasm and untapped talent. then teddy comes in and it’s like…. she’s brilliant, she’s not put off by cristina’s cristinaness and she actually seems to be interested in the teaching aspect of working at a teaching hospital (which was fucking rare at that point). so i was immediately drawn to the teddy-cristina dynamic. especially with the complication of owen being the common link.

i could go on a whole other ramble about teddy and the long lasting effects that stemmed from allison’s death and the guilt about that infidelity but suffice to say by the time we meet teddy she’s pretty messed up about love.

and as we know, cristina has a long history of being attracted to mentor figures.

i think that with teddy’s infatuation with owen being shut down on his end pretty early on (despite him doing a total one eighty in the later seasons and claiming to have always loved her 🙄) it opened the door for her to realize WHY she was attracted to him in the first place (a best friend she made in a war zone shortly after the allison tragedy, him already being in a relationship).

SO anyway teddy meets cristina. they’re both in love (?🙄) with owen, they are both passionate about the same specialty, they both have tragedy and failed romance in their pasts.

and i see what you mean about them being very similar. but they are also opposite (and therefore perfectly complimentary) in a lot of ways. i personally think teddy is a lot more optimistic than she appears. she’s not easily discouraged. i also like that right off the bat she recognizes cristina’s talent, takes a liking to her, and is kind of just impervious to cristina’s dislike/wariness of her. i think it’s so funny how almost everyone but meredith is at first really put off by cristina’s bluntness or outright offended by her but teddy is just like “i respect your skill, i’m not gonna take any shit, i know i’m great at my job so let me do it and we’ll be chill”

i think that the conversation about teddy wanting to leave and cristina begging her to stay and yelling that teddy can have owen was a turning point for both of them. i think they both had a lot of revelations.

AND THEN i think the saga of henry’s death was also a major turning point for their relationship. i don’t think this would make their relationship that twisted tbh bc i don’t think teddy ever saw it that way. i think if she blamed anyone other than herself, it was owen (which, yeah bc the way he handled that was fucking bonkers). and i’ve seen a lot of frustrating stuff (mostly on tiktok lol which i have to stay away from bc there’s rarely any nuance on there when it comes to fandom/media discussions) about how teddy repeatedly grilling cristina about henry’s death was the worst thing she ever did and she was punishing cristina or something. but i think that that isn’t true at all in the slightest. it was fucked up and brutal and it was a grief response that was terribly unfair to cristina, but i think it actually showed the two of them being on the same wavelength in a lot of ways. cristina isn’t fazed (at least visibly) by teddy’s need to hear it over and over. bc i think she understood why teddy needed to hear it. they both deal with grief by making it about the facts and about the medicine. teddy needed to know that there is nothing anyone could have done to save him so that she doesn’t feel like she has another death on her hands. and i think cristina gets that because of her backstory with her fathers death. AGAIN i think they just get each other in ways that owen never got either of them.

AND HOW COULD I NOT MENTION THAT TEDDY HAS ACTUALLY SAID “i’m in love with cristina yang”

i’ve always loved comics but i was not really a marvel kid — mostly a dc/image/mirage kid. i’ve also always loved comics adaptions (my dad and i had a complicated relationship to put it mildly BUT i think we saw every batman movie ever made together, before the dceu…. happened). so i fell very easily into the marvel movies when they started coming out (except the hulk movies. i don’t believe in those.)

anyway i honestly just saw gotg 1 because it was a comic book movie. i didn’t know much about it walking in. i actually didn’t love the first movie in my first viewing. i can’t remember why - maybe i already hated chris pratt lol. i know i thought starlord as a character was kinda…boring. but what saved the movie for me was groot (adored him) and rocket (the minute we saw that fuckin raccoon’s back i was like…wtf why isn’t this movie about him??).

and you know. there was the snark. the voice. all that. i was in denial but it was there. im just predisposed to love a grumpy wounded person desperately trying to hide a heart of gold

then gotg 2 came out and i loved it. it was probably in my top three favorite marvel movies. it was so good i think it made the first movie better??? we got to see so much more of not just rocket’s backstory but who he is. how he interacts with people he loves. how he self-sabotages. how he shows care. i just wanted to bundle him up and protect him. and aside from rocket, this is also where i fell in love with yondu. and i am a sucker for a sibling dynamic (startling no-one) so i loved the nebula & gamora arc too.

i probably started rewatching both movies at this point. not obsessively but they were definitely comfort rewatches. and partner has the marvel unlimited app so i was catching up on a lot of the comics

narrative structure is also really important to me and i have a rigorous list of what makes a “”good” trilogy (different t from what makes a “fun” trilogy) and gotg is like. one of two or three trilogies that make the cut.

then 3. ugh. once the first trailer came out and it was clearly focused on rocket, i stayed away from all gotg media. put a pause on reading the comics — everything. i wanted to go in with no preconceived notions. a few things had happened to me in the year or so prior to the movie coming out. i’ll skip explaining those because they require their own content warnings and this is already very long but suffice it to say i was predisposed to feel very strongly about this movie.

so. 3 broke my heart but it also put it back together. i think it might be the most realistically hopeful movie i’ve ever seen. from a narrative perspective, each character is so loved by gunn. they were each given the ending they needed and deserved. but also i felt like the message of the movie was this:

no matter how fucked up and ugly you think you or your past are, you deserve to allow yourself the possibility of joy & connection.

and i just. i needed that. as a mental health professional, i think almost all the clients ive ever worked with have needed that. i think a lot of the world needs that.

So...hear me out-TFP Getaway He's an MTO (or whatever the Aligned equivlent is) and during the war on Cybertron was a member of the Elite Guard, and did spec ops work, similar to . He was partners with Skids during the war, though sadly Skids was presumed killed during a botched mission, something which greatly affected Getaway. Suffice to say, he hates the Decepticons with all his Spark-especially Megatron-and is willing to do whatever it takes to destroy them. Anyways he finds his way to Earth and joins Team Prime shortly after Cliffjumper and Arcee do. His dynamic with the Team is...intresting to say the least -Optimus: Looks up to him, worships the very ground he walks on, though he can't help but think that Optimus has grown soft since he's arrived on Earth -Ratchet: Mostly indifferent. But he's the medic so, best not to tick off the guy in charge of putting you back together. -Bumblebee: Respects him a good deal, especially for defying Megatron at the cost of his voice box -Bulkhead-Mild dislike, given I'm pretty sure the Elite Guard and Wreckers had a bit of a rivalry during the war (similar to IDW's rivalry between the Wreckers and Spec Ops), though Getaway is willing to put that aside for the sake of winning the war -Cliffjumper-Not a fan of his recklessness, thinks (correctly) that sooner or later it will get him killed -Arcee: She's the one Getaway gets along with the best, given they both lost partners during the war. After Cliffjumper's death, Getaway is there to let her know he knows what it's like. Eventually though Getaway gets frustrated with Optimus not killing Megatron, and decides to give him that little push he needs to finish the job: killing one of Team Prime and making it look like Megatron did it. And when Smokescreen arrives he sees his chance. He ingratiates himself with the rookie, earning his trust, and then, when he least expects it, tries to kill him. However, he fails, Smokescreen escapes, and with the rest of team prime knowing he's kind of a dick, Getaway goes on the run, waging his own solo war on the Decepticons Anyways, if you want to hear more about this AU let me know?

I don't think there quite is an aligned equivalent to MTOs? At least, not in a recognizable way I can recall. The closest thing we might have is the vehicons, or the protoform clones?? We can always suggest in this scenario MTOs do exist (though, since TFP seems to be a tidge more biology inclined I'm gonna suggest it's CNA based, rather than based on sparks.)

Mmn, 100% revenge motivated. Now typically I'm more approving of revenge than TFP as a show seems to be, but trying to eliminate ALL decepticons seems a little... there are going to be issues.

Makes sense that the Elite Guard and the Wreckers would have a rivalry, especially since in aligned the Wreckers as a unit are older than the autobots as a faction, until they got ~absorbed~ into being part of the autobots, so I can see there definitely being tensions between the very Autobot-ey autobots and the often indoor outdoor equivalent of autobots. Oh! Or I'm wrong!

Makes sense Getaway would get along with Arcee, I wonder what consequences that'll have

STMPD Recommends Ranma 1/2 Fanfiction: Nemo Blank's Chaos Factor (Or, Ucchan is Best Girl)

Okay. Time for some changes around here.

Yes, that's right. You're not dreaming, dear reader. In my neverending Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath to waste my own time on the internet, I've decided to expand on beyond writing reviews of Bubblegum Crisis fanfiction to review... other fanfiction. My powers grow, and grow, and grow.

Okay, huge forewarning, let's just get it out of the way, I don't actually read a whole lot of Ranma fanfiction. I used to read a lot more, but my tastes always tended toward the somewhat shitty fanfictions, not the actually good ones. So I'm probably just gonna recommend two incredibly good Ranma fics, and then move onto other pastures. There's a particular Homestuck-Pacific Rim crossover I've always wanted to sell people on, stuff like that.

Anyway! Here's a good Ranma fanfiction, incomplete but uproariously funny and maybe too clever by half: Chaos Factor.

Well, then. What exactly is Chaos Factor about? It... um... well... fuck. Hang on.

Were this a fic with weaker writing, I would have a pretty hard time overlooking CF's tendency to veer wildly all over the place in terms of setting and what its attention is focused on. So let's start at the beginning: Ranma goes off to train in the mountains, is accosted by a soul-stealing demon, is saved by his Neko-ken being a giant spirit tiger that mauls the shit out of the demon - and wakes up to Ukyo Kuonji, everyone's favorite crossdressing Kansaiben okonomiyaki chef childhood friend waifu, holding him close to ensure his well-being with a side of pressing her cleavage into his side.

Of course within five seconds Shampoo, Akane, Genma, Soun, Mousse, and Ryoga all show up. Of course there's an altercation where Akane falls into a river, Ranma saves her, and she yeets him into the stratosphere. Reader, Akane is many things in this fic, but she's hardly a kind soul. Which - is okay?

Yeah, let me just get this out of the way, I don't really like Akane. She's a girl out of her depth in Ranma's insane martial-arts world, a normal, sane human being whose dignity is constantly put to the test by the irrationality that is Ranma, his rivals and fiancees, and their goofy superpowers. Oh, sure, she can be cute at times, but more often than not she's the worst sort of tsundere, the childish one who treats any entreaty towards what little order she has left in her life as an affront on her person and then proceeds to beat up Ranma. Oh, sure, the manga probably treats her better, but that doesn't change the fact that Ranma saving her again and again and again and neither of the two admitting they might like each other over and over and over again is not really a healthy relationship dynamic. Sure, the other girls are possessive and jealous too, but at least they can keep up with Ranma to a closer degree, at least they're honest with their own affection. Well, whatever, this argument has been had since Internet Time Immemorial and will likely be thus for years to come. So... Yeah. One of the best quotes from CF (and there are so, so many) speaks to this: "It was true love, all right. True love for eight-year-olds."

Anyway, Ranma lands in his mom's backyard (this is after the manga's failed wedding ending, mind you), and they talk. Turns out Ranma thinks he's got this duty to the Tendo family to join the schools (his dad lied), turns out he doesn't know how to deal with love (he likes the Tendo sisters, but only knows that he doesn't know if he loves Akane), and... suffice to say that Nodoka finally says: No, Ranma, you're staying with me from here on out, and each fiancé will meet me in person and I'll determine their suitability one at a time.

Which would be a perfectly interesting pitch for a fic, you'd think, Ranma having to arrange all those meetings and Nodoka meeting the girls as they try to be on their best behavior. Only, we only get to Kodachi and Shampoo in interviews, because other plot threads are introduced fast. Very, very fast. Blisteringly fast. Among the things that just happen and don't stop happening:

Ranma gets yeeted into the middle of the Sailor Senshi, assumes they're a bunch of fiancés or pervs or whatever, and proceeds to avoid their attacks effortlessly. As Ranma's rivals and the Senshi get more and more intertwined, it becomes clear that a) Crystal Tokyo relies on wiping out everyone save a few million loyal to Serenity, something Sailor Pluto is largely hiding from her charges, and b) The Senshi are terrible at actual fights. Ranma simply summons Happosai (calls his name three times) and misery is had. Now, I don't especially like how the Senshi are sort of the butt of the joke here, especially since many gags are made out of how utterly unstoppable Kuno is by conventional standards, and those jokes are quite funny. But you can't have everything.

As such, when Ranma beats up a Youma without trying very hard, he ends up on the national news. Nabiki's having the time of her life playing the tour guide for the Tendo Dojo, right up until the government decides Ranma could be a useful asset in the war against the supernatural.

Washu from Tenchi Muyo ends up in a time warp where she inadvertently becomes Nodoka's mother (and Ranma's maternal Grandma!) Ryoko thinks having a nephew-niece is nothing short of awesome, and she and Sasami hang out with him and Ryoga for a bit.

Ryoga's wandering capacity is played up as a space distortion, to the point that he can end up in anywhere while going to anywhere else. Kasumi follows him to the bathroom of their house and ends up going through Egypt for a few moments, Mihoshi follows him to an alien planet, things like that.

Ranma flees normal life again, is tracked down by Ukyo using a somewhat terrifying ninja technique involving sympathetic ki, and they fight a samurai ghost together. Ranma figures out how to turn into a dragon and Ukyo falls even more head-over-heels in love with him, because, uh, dragons amirite? Meanwhile, Ranma is convinced that Ukyo wants Ranma to be a waitress for her, and that's cleared up... but Ranma still is afraid of her world, especially because Ukyo wants to become the head of a national okonomiyaki restaurant chain.

And it's all... funny, and sweet, and even if the tone it nails isn't exactly the manga's irreverent tone, as far as harem-adjacent tales go let it be said that Chaos Factor has a tone, and it nails that tone, and it keeps on that tone for 81k words. even if it ends somewhat anticlimactically before, if I recall correctly, Ranma and his fiancés are to have an audience with the emperor.

Look, I'm having trouble describing this fanfic that I've read a half-dozen times over because it's simply that good. I don't just encourage you to read it -- I implore you to do so. You won't regret it.

That definitely makes sense now that you mention it too I’m even more curious…if you got a request for a character that was really obscure or say you had 0 interest in would you reject it? Or would you just like grit your teeth and try to write something LOL I know before you said that both your Rin and Sae fics were requests (I think apologies if I remembered wrong) and you also had some Hiori requests too and iirc those characters were all kinda uhh “new” (for lack of a better term) to your usually characters..? I’m no fic writer but I remember when I had to write essays I’d slap out the first like two paragraphs keep writing and in the end I’d always go back to rewrite the first two because the flow of my writing established itself in the latter parts LOL yeah I think beginning parts are usually less refined on the first draft. finally watched the bakuten!! movie and i’m so so so fond

this is the sequel movie to bakuten the series (men’s rhythmic gymnastics sports anime), and it picks up right where we left off with the main team going to inter-highs

then Something Happens (spoilers under the cut)

first off i honestly remember next to nothing about the anime, which isn’t at all a criticism coming from me. it was imo a fairly generic sports anime, but a good one. and i always love a good generic sports anime

two things i do vividly remember about the series:

green dude was my favorite

so suffice it to say i enjoyed the movie immensely lol (it was surprisingly very green dude centric!)

i feel like the movie did a great job of setting the stage for viewers who hardly remember anything about the show (like me lmao) though admittedly i don’t think that’s an especially tall order. the characters fit neatly into your standard sports anime character molds, so reintroducing them is easy work

nothing wrong with characters that fit a good mold, btw

like the series, i suspect the movie won’t ultimately be all that memorable to me. but i’ll for sure remember that i enjoyed it and that it was actually kinda great

i’m very pleased that we got a few full performances that weren’t interspersed with cutaways to the audience or whatever, and personally i thought the performances looked pretty good

i really enjoyed the team dynamics (both with the main team and rival team) though for the life of me i can’t actually remember what the lore with futaba and misato and mashiro is lol i mean i can kinda piece of together from what we get in the movie but ohhhmygod sorry boys i literally have no memory of y’all

loved seeing the families, the embarrassingly supportive parents; that’s something i seriously would love to see in way more sports series

and my god watari (green dude) had some good ass character development

You know, i actually never really thought of this until now, what was the process like for you to create Ayame as a pretty nice partner for Tanjirou? I think it can be pretty hard to create a couple that is balanced so that they are not toxic nor unrealistically perfect. Since in canon its Kanao who is paired with Tanjirou, still Ayame seamlessly blends in to become more like canon character than an oc because of the relationship dynamics she has with other in fits other than Tanjirou.

Anyways I asked this because im a raging Tanyame simp, if thats not already glaringly obvious heh

10. Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

in all honesty, i've always had a soft spot for main characters in shounen mangas. the ones that spring to mind off the top of my head are naruto from, well, naruto, kaneki ken from tokyo ghoul, midoriya izuku from bnha... i've just always been drawn to the characters that mangakas point to and go "this is the good guy. this is who i want you to root for all the time" and i'm like yeah sure okay. i've also always loved ocs, because sometimes you just see a moment in a show and go "but what if there was someone else at that moment who does what i want to do for them?"

ayame is a lot like that, i think. tanjirou's story is just so, so tragic. he takes on too much, he shoulders the weight of the sky on his shoulders and he's always expected to be the strong one. there's no one on his side, he's so alone and no one can really, truly understand what he's going through. more than that... i just wanted him to not be so alone. if i could, i'd pull him into a big ole bear hug and squeeze the breath outta his lungs.

i guess the simple answer to this question is: i like tanjirou, so i want to give him some comfort.

the complicated answer would be... well. romance was never the focus of kny. sometimes, it didn't even feel like character interaction, beyond the first half of the manga, was all that important. i get it! when you're serialised in a manga, some things have to fall to the wayside so you can advance the plot. there are only so many pages you have to tell your story in and make sure people will keep wanting to read it. in fits, i get a chance to expand on things, pull from extras in the anime and also the light novels - after all, everyone is already kinda invested in canon. it's up to me to make people be interested in ayame and what she can bring. i've read a lot of wonderful ocs in my time as a reader, so it's nice when people feel something for ayame ^^ i'm also,,,,,,, a total romance fiend. i love reading romance fics, but even better when they're character/oc. sometimes we get to see the character treat the oc differently, sometimes we see them treat the oc totally in-character and sometimes the tender moments just make you breathe a sigh of relief and go aaaaaaaaaaa.

tanyame, i think, is a lot like all of that at once, i guess. i want to give tanjirou comfort. at the same time, i think i’d like it if he gave ayame some comfort too.

Whether you tell him yourself or not, Ace is gonna figure out on his own how you’re not...purely human. But hey- If you do tell him yourself- he’s gonna ask you one thing and one thing in particular-

and then you hit him. It’s not like you’re actually there specifically for someone heck you just winded up here after a mistake in the dispatching process. But overall ace would go from care free to careful.

He’ll try to goof around less and use that energy to just- observe you as much as he can, because admit it or not yknow he himself has more than meets the eye. Friend or foe which one are you to eachother I wonder...

Overall, he’s gonna put his faith in you as he continues to stay by your side, you are after all still his friend...despite being probably able to surmise the lives of those near their end but- that's Not something he should be worrying right now.

Epel...took it the wrong way- No dear, as much as it seems cool it’s not...all power and glory.

The initial admiration quickly turns into abstract fear when it finally sinks into him how you’re not...a glorified guide to the afterlife with a cool oversized blade. The stories painted your kind wrong in this world huh?

In short- be prepared for having to catch him before he stumbles to the ground- fully denying his terror when you ask him if he’s alright while shaking a bit in your arms. You’ll have to explain it very slowly and lightly to him how no you’re also not the type of reaper that forcefully reaps out souls from bodies in a spur of crimson

Assurance is key with him, so treat him slowly but surely whilst not hiding every single fact from him. It’s a fickle balance but it’s definitely something that’ll pay off once he comes into terms with the fact.

And when he does...you can bet he’ll use your status as a cool threat to others. Not everybody has a Grim Reaper as a buddy right? Take that you cunts-

I agree with your opinion on LBH! Don't get me wrong, I have a ton of respect for MXTX, but the way SQQ and LBH's relationship was written, even in the extras, was horrible. It'd be one thing if that was the point, but SQQ still leaves CQM for him, still sleeps with him, still marries him, etc... and none of this is really treated as a bad thing despite everything. You can only blame Xin Mo so much. And I know it's a danmei, but since the story is all about subverting tropes anyway, I think I would've much preferred it if LBH had actually left on a sort of journey of self-discovery, only to return maybe months or even years later sometime in the extras and see where his relationship with SQQ goes from there before eventually marrying him.

Listen I received this ask ages ago and really debated whether or not I was going to post it and go into my 3-4 big problems with Bingqiu and then inevitably have to follow it up with "but I like LBH" and "Listen, I'm okay with Bingqiu if it's funny but as a serious ship...I have opinions" but I did not want to get into a Debate just yet.

Suffice to say: I agree with you! There are a lot of problems that can't really be excused. Also you saying you think LBH should go on a journey of self-discovery also changed how I decided to frame LBH's arc at the end of my Laments of a Sellout Author fic so THANK YOU! And I agree that it would have been a good solution! Like them getting together and LBH getting over everything happens so fast, there's no build up, and so much of that fast pace serves as a kind of "punishment" for Shen Yuan. Because that's the subversion, he turns the harem guy gay and now he has to deal with it hahahaha (sarcasm). But like, (and I said I wouldn't get INTO IT but....) that's one of the things that I thought could have been handled better. I understood the choice that MXTX made (which I think many people don't) but I think it could have been done differently. Like even just a time skip where SQQ at the end promises to wait for him and we skip to 2 years later at least acknowledging LBH did SOMETHING for his own mental health or whatever. It could have been integrated.

The other thing is that people will be like "oh, so a ship has to be healthy for you to ship it?!" like, for me? Unless both people are evil, like, yeah. But that's me. You can dislike a ship for a lot of reasons. For MDZS I'm not a huge fan of Wen Qing/Jiang Cheng for no real reason. I don't think anything negative or positive of the people who ship it, I just don't see it. No one would say that me not shipping that is a comment on the shippers.

In general, if a person is saying "I don't like this ship" that's not the same as saying "YOU can't like the ship." But if someone is going to say "freedom of speech" applies to shipping (🙄) then it also applies to criticism of that ship. So for me, I like the dynamics of serious ships to be more equal and less creepy. If you don't, okay! You're free to talk about that but you don't need to come to ME and act like I'm stopping you from doing anything. Anyway: Bingqiu is funny though. You have to give it that.

Final speculation about the Tally-Alder situation

After having written what turned out to be - as I realised writing it - pretty dark scenarios where neither Tally nor Alder really get a good outcome, here is how I think this might have worked better:

Tally goes to Alder, all youth and righteous indignation, and Alder realises the risk inherent in having someone so young glance at shocking snippets from your own life. Alder also realises that Tally is an idealist, passionate about justice and emotionally invested in making the world a better place - and also that Tally knows very little about the ways of the world.

So Alder makes Tally feel seen (and loved, depending on if Alder wants to indulge herself and/or manipulate Tally; because, truly, the age and power difference makes love between those two very complicated and Tally might not see this but Alder certainly does). Alder takes the time to meet with Tally regularly and makes Tally promise her that if she has disturbing dreams, she will come to Alder immediately. This is a little inconvenient for Alder but preferable to having a very emotional, insecure cadet running around on base searching for affirmation and answers in other places.

Depending on Alder's mood, she might throw in a little manipulation, how much she cares for Tally and that making the world a better place starts with conversations and speaking and listening to one another (this might just be my view, I wholly agree with the latter part and disagree with the first because I believe that if Alder really cared for Tally she would never say so to Tally in a moment where Tally is insecure and hurting. Because if you get to someone on that level, you can probably ask them to do awful things afterwards. So as I said, depends on how morally strict Alder is with herself, although note that this version of her would not put Tally in any uncompromising situations, she is simply to old for this stuff (emotionally), what does she profit from the emotional dependency and suffering of others).

Tally feels great relief, like a big weight lifted off her shoulders and she visits Alder regularly. They disagree about Alder's actions and decisions, they disagree about what counts as moral behaviour - after all, Alder is really old and her view of the world was forged at a time very different from Tally's.

But Alder gives this context, too:

"Tally, do you know what the procedure would be when a general abdicates? Who becomes the new general - would you approve of anyone but me, or only of some particular people? Do you believe that I am the only problem or do you believe that subordinates who allow a general to do anything are also part of the problem? If someone else but me was the general, what is there to stop them from being like me or worse than me?

What do you know about the history of the military and how we are entangled with politicians? What do you know about the dynamics between the military and the Spree and the dodgers?

There is a complex history and there are complex reasons for why we are currently at this point, if you want to make the world better, you need to understand it first."

Tally feels impatience nipping at her heels but Alder has met her with openness, honesty and acknowledged her as someone she takes seriously, so she calms her fire and starts doing actual research.

She still ends up disagreeing with Alder a lot of the time but is pained to admit that often it ends in: we have very similar aims but disagree in how to get there; and: I cannot bring myself to open rebellion against you, my mind does not strongly enough disagree with my heart.

And so both Alder and Tally profit from the situation:

For the first time in decades, Alder takes the time to interact with someone who really thinks she messes things up and tries to make her reasoning clear and observes which arguments convince Tally and which don't. This gives her a better feel of the general atmosphere among her soldiers and helps her consolidate her power (as well as be a little less absolutist). Without Tally's bond with her, the dreams and Alder's care for Tally as well as her interest in defusing the situation as peacefully as possible, this scenario would never have happened.

And Tally gets private lessons from someone with hundreds of years of experience, and if anyone is jealous of this preferential treatment, they are less so when they hear Tally wake up screaming from nightmares and when they see Tally bowed over another huge tome of the history of US jurisprudence in the 1800s and ask her: what are you doing, do I even want to know? - and Tally answers, completely exhausted: General Alder said if I wanted to criticise the Camarilla conflicts in 1877, I would need to brush up on my legal knowledge - and her fellow cadets are mostly terrified, but some are curious history nerds and so, by accident, Tally starts an "Alder's history club" where she (by necessity) and other cadets (by choice) learn about arcane tribes and strange jungles, and society rules in 17th century France.

Tally, who dislikes fighting anyways, ends up continuing the Alder's history club after graduation and later, teaches it at War College because it seems to her that a lot of misunderstandings and bad decision-making from cadets and generals alike could be averted with some understanding of history, how exchanges between different generations work, and some critical thinking skills.

As to Alder's and Tally's relationship, I will lay a veil over this but suffice it to say - All is well.

Aurora stepped aside, and behind her was Penthesilea who also stepped aside, to reveal the diminuative Ciel Soleil.

"She's on Penny's team." Ruby stated.

"Was." Ciel stated. "Cadet Ciel Soleil."

"Jaune?" Jaune asked, "Jaune Arc."

"Ladies love it." Ruby said from the other side of their bed.

"Indeed?" Ciel asked.

"How can I, um, help you?" Jaune asked.

"General Ironwood asked me to come and aid Penthesilea."

"Pen?" Ruby asked Penthesilea.

"Indeed, Friend-Ruby."

"And how do you feel about it?" Jaune asked.

"I believe she will do everything in her power to aid me, Lord-Friend-Jaune."

"Uh... what?" Jaune asked.

"Lord-Friend-Jaune." Ruby repeated.

"That wasn't the part I was having trouble with." Jaune voiced. He then turned to Ciel, "So, you want to stay in our castle and help Penthesilea?"

"Indeed." Ciel stated.

"Granted, I suppose." Jaune stated, "But there are a few conditions. Everything in this castle is to be kept confidential."

"General Ironwood has stated it will be classified Top Secret." Ciel stated.

"Anything that's not is still confidential." Jaune stated. "This our home, after all."

"Understood, Sir." Ciel stated.

"We are holding Cinder Fall, Emerald... what's her name?" Jaune asked.

"Sustrai." Weiss stated, and then Jaune continued,

"Mercury Black, and Neopolitan as prisoners. Do your best not to antagonize them."

"Of course, Sir." Ciel stated.

"I also have no idea where you're going to sleep." Jaune stated, "I'll leave that up to Aurora."

"M'Lord?" Aurora asked, and this caused Ruby to snicker.

"Aurora?" he asked.

"If I could sleep where we previously discussed?" Aurora asked, "That would free up a guest room."

Jaune laid back in bed. "Weiss?"

"It seems our castle is lacking quarters." Weiss simply stated.

"What does that mean?" Ruby asked.

"It means allowing Aurora to adopt her previously stated quatering request would indeed free up space that might be necessary elsewhere."

"You're saying you want her to stay here?"

"I am not." Weiss stated, "I am simply looking at it was rationally as possible."

"Alright." Jaune stated, "Aurora can have her closet. Ciel and stay in the empty room if she wants, or she can bunk in the turret."

"And Penthesilea?" Ciel asked, "Sir?"

"One of the guest rooms." Weiss stated.

"Would you want to share a room, Ciel?" Penthesilea asked.

"That would be most efficient." Ciel stated.

"Do the guest rooms have more than one bed?" Jaune asked. "Nevermind, someone else can help you with it."

"Perhaps more specificity?" Weiss asked.

"Aurora, stay here."

"Yes, M'Lord." Aurora stated.

"Pen, Ciel? If you need help, asked Ren and Nora."

"Yes, Friend-Jaune. Thank you."

"If I might ask about M'Lord, sir?" Ciel asked, and Jaune lifted himself up enough to look at her.

Jaune fully sat upright, "Oh, the Black Heart of the Woods made me an Earl." Jaune laid back down. "If you want, Taj should be able to take you there. He should be still on standby in the hangar. Tell him I said for him to take you. He can still get back here in a few minutes, if something happens."

Ciel stood to attention and saluted. She did a parade about face and marched off, Penthesilea attempting to march behind her. Aurora stepped towards the bed. "M'Lord?" she asked.

Jaune groaned as he forced himself up to a sitting, Ruby and Weiss moving around. "I suppose," Jaune stated, "we have to talk about you moving in here."

"Yes, M'Lord." Aurora said with a wide smile.

"And this M'Lord thing is kind of weird." Ruby added.

"Is there a problem, Lady Ruby?" Aurora asked, and Ruby just looked at her curiously.

"I'm a lady?" Ruiby nervously asked. "Wouldn't that mean Weiss, because, I mean, if any one is a lady, it would be her?"

"Thank you." Weiss said with a bright smile and light blue flush, though that seemed to almost be perpetual, nowadays.

"We have yet to decide who would be the wife for official matters." Aurora said with a smile.

"Anyways," Jaune said, "we're going to be... intimate?" he asked, and Aurora developed a wicked smile. "And... we know how you are going to react to it."

"And?" Weiss asked.

"And I'm not going to admonish you for it." Jaune said, and Aurora's smile somehow grew even bigger.

"We're not?" Ruby asked.

"I'm not going to pretend like she does not." Jaune said.

"Are you sure?" Ruby asked.

"It will have to stay between us, of course." Jaune stated, "And Ilia, apparently." With this, a shroud around Ilia decloaked and she walked nude away from the wall, causing Ruby and Weiss to jump with a start. "I've gotten so used to Ilia stalking me that I've come to count on it, and I suppose that applies to in here as well."

"Just so that we're clear?" Weiss asked, "We are giving the both of them permission to mastubate while watching our intimate time?"

"Well, I?.." Jaune asked, "Yeah. Welcome to the castle?"

"What's that got to do with it?" Ruby asked.

"You think you'd get used to it by now?" Ruby asked.

"You would think I might, as well." Weiss replied. "Suffice it to say, I have seen more naked flesh in the past couple weeks than I had for the entire rest of my life."

"That doesn't really sound like a complaint?" Ruby asked.

"It is not." Weiss said, shaking her head to look at Ruby, "Simply an observation."

"As long as it's sexy women." Jaune stated.

"And that is where you draw the line?" Weiss asked.

"Again," Jaune replied, "Ilia going naked wasn't my idea. Aurora moving in with us wasn't my idea. Nora is basically begging to run around as naked as she can, and I kind of want to oblige her. This is our house, after all. We should be confortable. Once we, you know, deal with the prisoners."

Neo turned away and crossed her arms.

"Yes." Jaune stated.

First Moments of Freedom by @jaerie / jaerie - i feel like it’s a common caution i give to anyone i’m reccing jenna’s fics to, but i’ll repeat it once more: please read the tags. haha i loved this fic and as with all of hers it is so well written, but it covers some dark and triggering topics, so just please take care of yourself. if it is something you are still interested in reading after traversing the tags, then you’ll be taken on a journey, that’s for sure.

Rose Pink Omega by KatnissPotter1 - this one was a lot of fun because so much about the fic felt like a/b/o fics from 2014/2015, back when they were harder to find. it gave me such a sense of nostalgia haha! it’s omega harry and his twin alpha marcel, and omega louis is roommates and besties with harry, and then on top of all of that Louis is a camboy and it’s a uni au and... yeah. there’s just a lot all shoved together in this and it felt like a fun throwback reading it!

When Tomorrow Comes by @jacaranda-bloom / jacaranda_bloom - okay listen. i am a SUCKER for fics that focus on scenting, and this fic is such a fun way of looking at all of that, PLUS it has ALPHAS nesting!!! i’m also a sucker for nesting, but alphas??? omg i looooooved that. and the idea of soulmates all as a part of it, it just was such fun and i really loved it.

ANYWAY.

@ melissa : so bitch listen. here’s the thing abt melissa…… i found her while browsing jonsa fic back when i cared abt GOT, and she brought me back to what i loved so much abt romance when i first started, way back in junior high, what’s up. i bad a fascination w historial romantic epics for a loooooong time — those formative yrs, amirite ladies??? — but girl i could never write it so well as melissa. immediately she struck this balance between the drama you expect from historicals and the levity of a good romance, and i was just like, “hand to god this woman must be published already, surely???”

(she’s not, but that’s ridiculous so we’re gonna skip that)

(also she’s busy?? we’ve been friends for like six years and i will never know how many kids she actually has, but the point is she’s a goddamn superhero and i’m obsessed w her, MOVING ON)

i just Had to be her friend for two reasons: 1) she’s too talented, and b) i have said that abt 2 ppl my entire life and she was the first, so i was like, “AH YES MY HOLY GRAIL”

so ofc i slid into her DMs just as effectively as that one guy i had a crush on when i was sixteen and he’s still shooting me texts every valentine’s day bc of the societal pressures i guess (it is Far Less Effective these days, he’s my age and therefore too young for me, gross, but i digress), except me and melissa go way stronger.

she reminded me of why, half a lifetime ago, i started writing romance — bc it’s fun, bc i want to. bc i can do absolutely anything i want, bc who else is gonna read it but me and whoever i share it with? it was all up to me what i wanted to do with it, and i could do anything. nothing really mattered but what i wanted, and i hadn’t felt that way abt anything in such a long time — let alone abt something i used to love so much.

melissa’s writing is so beautiful, it’s everything i wanted to achieve when i was fifteen and never got around to perfecting. and i’m totally okay w that now, bc what do i need to do myself that she’s not already doing/wants to do in the future? when i found melissa’s writing i found a missing part of me — a part i’d maybe lost, maybe i gave it up, idk, but it was totally gone until i found her fics and they fucking clicked. i had to reach out bc there was a part of me that was a part of her, and she helped me find that again w/o even knowing it.

so i found melissa via GOT, and from the start she’d been trying to get me to write some bethyl. years and years, she dropped not-so-subtle hints — and by “hints,” i mean legit directives that i watch just enough TWD to write her some beth/daryl fic. real crafty, she is.

eventually the stars aligned: i was bored w the same dynamics i’d been writing for years, i wanted smthn new, i was restless, i was line editing a bethyl fic she’d written, and — again — this shit clicked. her fic made me want to explore this dynamic i’d never done before, so i watched the prerequisite episodes (no more than that tho, i super hate the show and i’m begging y’all to not @ me abt it anymore). i found smthn that i’d been missing, smthn that challenged and excited me and brought me back around to why i love romance and, more importantly, why i want to write it myself.

so as i was starting to write bethyl, i was poking around the ao3 tag to get a feel for what had been done, what hadn’t, anything i might be missing. and goddamn BAM —

@ gus : this is where u enter dramatically thru a red velvet curtain that i don’t wanna touch (Metaphorically bc you do romance better than me and i’m cool w that bc your talent simply Cannot be touched, and Literally bc i hate velvet) — i was like, “please for the love of god let her want to write contemporary romance, i need some good fckin food”

i happened upon “doo wah diddy diddy” first. ofc the summary hooked me, forget my usual hard no against pregnancy fics (i have issues w pregnancy and that’s all anybody Needs to know, back off), but This Bitch !!!!!!! has a way with words and i wanted to be friends w her straightaway. lmao too bad for her, now she’s stuck w me

gus’s fics gave me what i wanted without having to write it myself. her style is so distinctive, she hits the notes between porn and Actual Affection that is missing from uhhhh, every romance i’ve tried?? (why is everyone so intent on the sex part?? fckin chill. at best it’s unrelatable and at worst u sound like u’d rather wear someone than fuck them, check urself)

she writes w such care, she wants you to know what she’s doing here, and what she’s doing here is combining the physical and emotional needs of both characters w/o infringing on anyone’s comfortability. you root for these characters bc they simply want to be together, no strings (and if there are strings, damn, they talk abt it).

gus makes you believe in love in the modern age. like, not to sound like one of those ppl who post fckin “no one in this generation knows how to love!!!1!!11!!” memes on facebook, those are dumb, but gus’s writing made me think “yeah man, love ain’t dead, it’s just abt how we approach it.”

(if y’all haven’t guessed yet, i have some hang-ups abt relationships. i’ve goddamn earned those. but melissa and gus both brought me back to where i needed to be — in this place where, yeah, we’ve got some shit to deal with, but we all still deserve the things we want, and those things are achievable. i could not have gotten here without them, so jot that down.)

gus is Real, she’s funny, she’s unapologetic in the way she writes. ofc she has her personal hurdles, but who doesn’t?? and tbh nobody writes a sex scene like gus does. physical, realistic, but balanced w the emotional depth that makes you root for these characters bc you can Feel how much they want each other — not just sexually, but in the less-erotic aftermath of that passion. it continues to blow my mind, bc i’ve never seen anyone do what she does. i can’t even pinpoint the specifics, bc she just… Does It. and you’re reading it like “yeah bitch that’s it,” and That’s It.

it’s fckin wild.

these two — my best friends, the lights of my life, both of whom always make me crave chicken tenders at THE most inconvenient hours bc somehow we always talk abt chicken or ice cream or ultimately DQ, but they're both so hot idec — have something special.

i really, really want them both to know that: it’s not just in how they’ve treated me as a friend, but who they are as people, in their creative pursuits. i’ve never known support the way they’ve shown me; i’ve never known this much enthusiasm or investment or belief that i can do what i want with my talent. i want them to know that i feel the same way abt them and their works.

sometimes, when i look back at their writing that completely kicked my ass, i still can’t believe that they’ve become two of my best friends. it’s totally bonkers. they’re This Talented, and they wanna be friends w my spastic ass? GIRL. i’m out.

i’m not always the best at being present, at giving people what they need when they need it. but with everything that melissa and gus have given me in the past few years, i need them to know this — honey!!! i need all y’all to know this, bc i know fandom shit is hard, but you should know some of these friendships are so, so worth all that bullshit, so —

they have so much to give, so much to say, so much to offer. i could not have kept going without them. i couldn’t believe in myself without the faith they’ve given to me. i hope that i can always give that same faith right back.

and that, babes, is what real soulmates are all about.
