Hi there, I'm Ariel Kroon, and this is my Tumblr thing. I'm an independent scholar and a freelance academic editor, and so I'm going to be crossposting from my blog (when I blog). I'm hoping this won't take me down too many rabbit holes, but you never know.
I did my dissertation on post-apocalyptic Canadian science fiction published between 1948-1989, so expect me to post about obscure SF as well as my Opinions on apocalyptic discourse, the apocalyptic imaginary, cyberpunk and solarpunk. I use an intersectional feminist lens, as well as thinking with ecocriticism, affect theory, queer theory and gender studies, and I have a weakness for/history in feminist philosophical thought and also (xtian, protestant, crc, dutch-settler) religion.
I'm a third-generation Dutch immigrant, settler scholar on the trad. territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral peoples and it feels weird to disclose this because I'm also a millennial who grew up with LJ and non-anonymity online makes me feel really squeamish and vulnerable, but that's a privilege a lot of people don't get these days. Expect me to wrestle a lot with the discourse/idea of reconciliation in so-called Canada, cause I'm complicit as hell but I'm trying to do my best to be a conscientious race-traitor.
I also struggle with chronic fatigue, chronic pain, brain fog, short term memory issues, executive functioning, and I am on the road to figuring out what I suspect is the fact that I'm on the spectrum, so sometimes I don't really have the spoons or grace for being the best ally I can be. The discourse of the perfect activist is one I want to push back against, as someone with multiple disabilities; the excuse of being "too disabled" to ignore the suffering of others is, I think, a harmful myth that many of us - intentionally or not - tend to buy in to and I want to also push against that.
Disability studies isn't something I'm very familiar with at all, since my disabilities manifested after a car crash in 2019 (which exacerbated all the underlying issues I was busy masking / repressing while being in grad school, because I suddenly lost the ability to keep up my coping mechanisms). I look forward to learning more about pretty much all of these things, by the way.
Speaking of being very new to a field, I'm co-host of Solarpunk Presents Podcast (@solarpunkpresentspodcast); come along and learn with me and Christina De La Rocha about people doing their best in the present with an eye towards a better future world for all.

Ecofascism and Rewilding: A Conversation With Ariel Kroon and Christina De La Rocha
There’s no question that the biosphere is in crisis right now thanks to human-driven global warming, our hostile takeover of most of Earth’s land area, and our pollution and overfishing of the seas. Slowing down—never mind outright stopping—the collapse of the Earth’s ecosystems and the mass extinction currently gaining pace calls for aggressively protecting the environment, or possibly even giving half of the Earth’s land surface back to nature in a process known as rewilding.
But how will we manage to share the Earth with the rest of the biosphere when history shows that we’re pretty terrible at sharing it with each other, with some states even going so far as to have used the preservation of wilderness as a tool of genocide and white supremacy? There are still those who would use environmental protection as an excuse to block immigrants, reject refugees, and expel “undesirable” people from the land. What will it take to value human and non-human life and the land all equally, without using one as an excuse to persecute the other?
Getting urgently-needed environmental protection and rewilding right requires facing the evils that have been historically committed in the name of conservation, so that we don’t repeat those grave mistakes, even with the best of intentions. As solarpunks, we need to learn from the past in order to shape futures that are intentionally better than our pasts and presents.
And that’s a wrap for season 2! Season 3 will be coming along in the last week of June for Patreon supporters, and to the public in the first week of July. Until then, keep dreaming, and keep up the good work!

Oryx and Crake: Reading and Writing the work 3 & 1
As I continue to read my book along with my literary criticism, I see so many things and ideas that are being presented in both. In Reasonably Insane by Ariel Kroon, she discusses the reasons why Crake may or may not be insane. In all honesty, while reading this book, I feel like everyone is insane.
The main characters in this book are sectioned off from the rest of society. They stay in Compounds, where the top and best scientists (and their kids) are protected and safe from the outside world to test, experiment, and basically do whatever they want to do. After reading some of this criticism, I started reading my book now and I started to see how Atwood creates this “happiness dystopia” as Kroon would describe it. Atwood focuses on all of the positive things that are happening INSIDE the walls of the Compounds and not what was going on on the outside which was poverty, starvation, racism etc. All the people inside the Compounds are like-minded people; scientists who do not care about the consequences for advancing science (an example given was Dr. Frankenstein). Because these people who are living inside of the Compounds are basically all the same people who don’t care about the wellbeing of creatures or people, the things of the real world outside the walls are entertainment to them. The “real dystopian setting” is still taking place through the book, but through the readers lens, the life of Jimmy and Crake seem pretty good. They’re living a pretty nice life away from the actual catastrophe that is happening right outside, but it all seems like a joke or entertainment to them because they don’t have to experience it.

Hello, Tumblr!
Hiya Tumblr! This is the official Solarpunk Presents podcast account, which will be posting our podcasts (bimonthly... every two weeks ... however you like to say it), posts from our blog https://solarpunkpresents.com and reblogging / liking excellent solarpunk content. We're just starting up our second season, so we don't have a ton of content right now, but watch this spot for podcast episodes that explore the people and projects working on bringing us a better world today. The podcast is cohosted by Christina De La Rocha and Ariel Kroon, who is the one writing this post and talking about herself in third person like a weirdo.
If you listen to our show and like what you hear, leave us a nice review on your podcatcher platform? We'd super appreciate it. If you have some money to spare and would like to support solarpunk content, we also have a Patreon, where Patrons get early access to our episodes + bonus content sometimes, when we get a minute.
Stay solarpunk!

The Fantasies of Post-apocalyptic Dystopian Fiction, with Ariel Kroon
Classic, post-apocalyptic, dystopian fiction is a type of fantasy where we’re dreaming of starting over in an empty landscape from a societal and cultural slate wiped clean by some devastating event that we don’t have to feel guilty about having happened—at least, it is according to our very own Ariel Kroon, who does, yes, have a PhD in it.* Yet, at the same time, these fantasies generally suffer from a strange lack of imagination, wherein the characters use the “fresh new start” to recreate the same old society, albeit with themselves at the top, with the same old systemic socioeconomic, environmental, and structural problems.
It’s almost as if it is easy to dream up apocalypse but next to impossible to envision a different way of living. Although a failure of imagination would most likely look different for solarpunk, can solarpunk creators and dreamers of a positive future avoid falling into the same sort of trap?
*Post-apocalyptic Canadian science-fiction 1948-1989, she wants to clarify. She’s even got the thesis to prove it.

This was our very first episode of the podcast, back when Solarpunk Presents was hosted by Solarpunk Futures, a production of @solarpunkmagazine - it's a sort of test-drive, as Christina and I were brand-new to podcasting at the time, so we thought we might have a discussion about issues we'd been seeing as non-fiction editors in slush articles. Turns out, solarpunk non-fiction is difficult! Here's the offish description:
"In this soft-launch of Solarpunk Presents, the companion podcast to Solarpunk Futures, hosts and Solarpunk Magazine nonfiction editors Ariel Kroon and Christina De La Rocha tackle the question of “Must Solarpunk Should”? This is a dilemma that unconsciously or consciously comes through in a lot of the nonfiction submissions that we receive in our slush pile, and we have Thoughts about it. So many thoughts! Possibly controversial one! But one of the best things about solarpunk is the space that it gives us to explore and think through new paradigms, new systems thinking, new ideas – some of which maybe we don’t necessarily love, but that are part of our world regardless of whether we like it or not. We’re learning and growing with every new day as solarpunks - come join us!
PS: The audio is a bit bumpy in parts; please excuse the technical hiccups. We’re still learning!"

In this episode of Solarpunk Presents, nonfiction co-editor Ariel Kroon sits down for a virtual chat with Gabrielle Gelderman, an Edmonton, Alberta-based climate grief chaplain and climate justice organizer. They talk about what climate grief chaplaincy even is, the necessity of holding communal safe spaces for grieving especially for organizers, the necessity of feeling grief in order to feel more positive emotions, and climate despair as a corollary of solarpunk hope.

"This month, ShortCuts presents another ShortCuts Live! It is a conversation with Ariel Kroon, Nick Beauchesne, and Chelsea Miya about their collaboration in producing “Academics on Air” (May 2022) for The SpokenWeb Podcast. That episode became a paper that Ariel, Nick, and Chelsea co-presented at the 2022 SpokenWeb Symposium and Institute. After that presentation, ShortCuts producer Katherine McLeod sat down with Ariel, Nick, and Chelsea around a microphone in the SpokenWeb Amp Lab at Concordia University. They talked about processes of collaboration and archival listening that shaped their work. Starting with one audio clip as the short ‘cut’ that caught their attention in the archives, they talk about about context of that clip in the Voiceprint archives, the potential for podcasting to be a radical act of unarchiving, and what makes recordings of a radio show a unique task for cataloguers working with literary sounds recordings, and much more."
