What would you say are your more controversial opinions about the hp characters?

ohhhh okayyy. i feel like my opinions on a lot of the characters aren’t controversial because i dont feel super strongly towards anyone in any negative light but here are some i could think of at the top of my head:

i’m glad the malfoys faced more extreme backlash after the second wizarding war. a lot of people in the fandom seem to be very sympathetic towards draco and scorpius for getting dogpiled with the brunt of it (which yeah, it sucks, especially for scorpius) but the prejudice makes complete make sense to me. if i was someone who didn’t know scorpius’ character, and had someone from my family get killed in the second war due to death eaters or something— seeing the malfoys still be wealthy and walk around freely without any jailtime, i would be bitter too. they’re hated on but they’re still one of the richest families ever, so they’ll live LOL

another anon has asked about this and i haven’t responded to them yet but when i do i will link it here for my reasons. basically: the best character in the cursed child is harry potter. i think the way they wrote his character and ptsd carried the play. it was def his story, not albus’.

i do think dumbledore has some aspects of him that may be considered morally gray, but mostly i dont think he is. he does everything for the good of the world, and his complete selflessness leads him to sacrifice anything for it— even himself and the people he loves, when necessary. i completely understand why people wouldn’t agree with his methods though.

james potter isn’t a sunshine character he’s a dickhead. fans of him made him a golden retriever character to be more palatable for modern times. i like him the way he is: an asshole and then less of an asshole 👍 this is what true stanning looks like

pansy parkinson is racist and out of all the female side characters, developing HER is so questionable from fandom

harry had questionable descriptions about a lot of male characters to make people think he could be a little 🏳️‍🌈 there was bill, there was sirius, there was cedric. but draco is not a part of that list. harry was not feeling draco whatsoever throughout the series but drarry shippers cling to that one ‘obsessed’ line

furthermore, harry rejecting draco’s offer of friendship wasn’t a sad or a ‘what if’ scene. draco was being a classist piece of shit and harry didnt want to fuck with that, there isnt any way in any timeline he wouldve accepted draco’s friendship.

slytherin sucks just generally lol. people want so bad to pluck anti-heroes out of a series that was written specifically with the mind to make all the characters suck.

hermione and ron’s drama isn’t as toxic as people make it out to be. yes, this includes the time hermione sent birds after him. people act like its the end of the world but she was tackling puberty and the end of society soooo i give her a pass to tweak out.

mostly every harry potter character has horrific names. like literally mostly everyone. even the name harry potter 🙁

severus snape’s ‘redemption’ or whatever was so ass. he bullies kids for five years and then everything is chill because… true love? on harry’s mum? are you kidding me 💀

and i am afraid that you're getting a more long-winded answer than you may have been hoping for...

male weasleys are split down the middle into two camps, physically:

charlie, fred, and george are described as being short and stocky [although "short" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, since they're all taller than harry: fred and george shrink when they take polyjuice potion to transform into him in deathly hallows].

the implication - i think - is that charlie and the twins look like molly, who is described several times as short and plump in build. ginny is also described numerous times in the books as short and is said in chapter thirty-three of order of the phoenix to resemble fred and george facially, which, since's she's described in deathly hallows as having her mother's brown eyes - which probably triggered some sort of freudian shudder in harry - means i think we can conclude that this half of the family all look their mam.

[and also that molly is a hottie herself. she often gets turned by the fandom into a fairly sexless being - even though she didn't have those seven children immaculately, did she? - with a strict, prudish vibe. and - to do some discourse for a moment - we all know that the fact that she's described as fat is the direct cause of this. but several men are canonically ready to risk it all for ginny - and it's time we all acknowledged this is because she inherited her bonafide baddie powers straight from molly.]

percy and ron - on the other hand - are, like arthur, described as being tall, thin, and gangly. bill is never explicitly said to be slender, but he is described in the fifth chapter of goblet of fire as "tall" immediately after harry has stated that charlie is short[ish] and broad - which allows us to reasonably infer that he's on the arthur-weasley-skinny-legend side of the family.

and we can also assume - since ron is never said to resemble molly, nor [to harry's great relief] ginny, facially - that his features - his long nose and blue eyes - come from his father, who is also the source of percy's short-sightedness.

and, while harry [the narrative perspective] never says that he thinks arthur is hot - because why would he? - nor percy and ron [although i think it's worth noting that he doesn't consider it ridiculous that both of them manage to pull - and it's never suggested that penelope clearwater and lavender brown aren't cuties] it's actually possible to justify the idea that they are canonically fit using more than pure hot air...

[harry does - obviously - think bill's a babe. he sees fleur checking him out and immediately thinks... same.]

because a very striking narrative choice that the series makes is the idea that all pureblood nuclear family units look identical to each other - which serves as a visual metaphor for the importance of blood-status and lineage within the wizarding world. this is why narcissa malfoy is as pale and blonde as lucius and draco [even though bellatrix and andromeda are dark haired] and why molly is a redhead even though red hair and freckles are stated in the text to be weasley - rather than prewett - traits. harry's resemblance to his pureblood father eases his passage through wizarding society. voldemort's lack of resemblance to his pureblood mother does the opposite.

the weasleys and the malfoys are narrative mirrors within the series - with the fact that ron and draco are both so near-identical to arthur and lucius as to be immediately identifiable as each man's son by anyone who meets them part of this mirroring. it makes sense, then, that since the non-ron weasley children don't have a specific malfoy mirror, the same general principle applies, and the three weasley brothers who are built like arthur also strongly resemble him facially - and that bill also has a long nose [and a long something else, i'll wager!] and a cracking pair of baby blues.

or that if bill is hot, arthur is hot - and therefore if arthur is hot, ron is hot.

[where bill outpaces his brothers, i fear, is that he clearly has rizz - whereas ron's seduction skills are famously weak before he gets his hands on a copy of twelve fail-safe ways to charm witches - i.e. when he cockblocks harry spectacularly by beefing with cho unprovoked about the quidditch team she supports, which always sends me - and percy is... percy.]

jk rowling: ok let's create a scene in which ginny is talked even by slytherins and that can be a build up for hinny. Such a hinny scene!!

Also jk rowling: ends up writing a drarry scene in which not only harry feels uncomfortable watching pansy stroking draco's hair, BUT ALSO DRACO SAYS GINNY IS NOT SPECIAL(can we talk about this??????!) *giggles*

I hate how suddenly in book 6 random characters who have no reason to say good things about her are suddenly acting like she's the Bestest Ever TM in order to tell the readers to like her - which really shows how weak as a character she is (in the later books - I think pre book 6 she was actually a good character).

We don't need all the Slytherins to go on and on about how awesome Hermione or Neville are. We don't need the Death Eaters to stage a conversation where they're all like 'dang! that Luna Lovegood sure is quirky and fun but also super good hearted and insightful and totally awesome!" or Arthur and Molly to be like 'you know that Snape sure is interesting and morally ambiguous. And don't even get me started on Voldemort - say what you will about the man, but he's got charisma! And what a fascinating backstory!" That would be ridiculous. And unnecessary. Because all those characters can stand on their own. Ginny can't and JKR over-compensates by trying to have other characters tell us how great she is but that actually just undermines her.

Which is a shame. Because Ginny had a ton of potential and I liked her way more in book 5 (and the previous books) when she actually had an arc and JKR wasn't flattening her out and trying to push her as the Love Interest TM at the expense of her character.

And yeah that whole scene is accidentally such drarry fodder. Here's the relevant passage.

I mean, Pansy mentions that people like Ginny and immediately looks at Draco but she can't be worried about Draco liking Ginny because Draco has literally just dismissed her. In fact, it's Blaise that she seems to be more worried about. And as soon as Blaise insults Ginny Pansy relaxes and looks happy. (So does Draco, incidentally). So Pansy looking at Draco seems more like she knows he might care about boys liking Ginny...boys like Harry Potter for example. Pansy's been hanging around with Draco for 5 years by this point. She's definitely noticed how he is about Harry. And yeah I know she's stroking Draco's hair but they don't seem to actually be dating. I think that's just Harry projecting.

And we know if they actually got together ever Harry would've mentioned it. So clearly Draco at least wasn't interested. And Pansy does end up marrying Blaise. So I read this scene as Pansy crushing on Blaise, Draco possibly lowkey crushing on Blaise and highkey crushing on Harry and also being super jealous of Ginny (bc he immediately clocked her fancying Harry...and Collin Creevey too tbh - just like Harry clocks everyone who even looks at Draco lol) and Pansy knowing it.

AND THEN after all this we get Harry hating on Pansy for looking like she's enjoying stroking Draco's hair followed by him getting hit directly on the head by a piece of luggage because he got distracted by the sight of Draco changing. And THEN he ends up immobilized and alone, entirely at Draco's mercy, while believing Draco to be a Death Eater (and being correct!) and he doesn't even feel worried that Draco will hurt him or hand him over to Voldemort...and he's right, because Draco doesn't. Absolutely wild. Book 6 is the drarry fic of all time. JKR did not intend or want it to be. But it is.

I have a headcaon that sev knows how to tell the twins apart

LMAO ME TOO. I actually headcanon that Sev was quite fond of the Weasley family.

Bill was a smart student, who, according to Ginny, didn’t like Snape. But I doubt Snape cared about what the students thought of him, I think he just cared if they did well in his class or not. Given that Bill was a prefect + Head-Boy and got 12 O.W.L.s, he definitely didn’t get in trouble that much and was a clever student, so Snape probably tolerated him.

We don’t know much about Charlie but based on Hogwarts Mystery he low-key likes Snape, so I think they were alright.

I personally headcanon that Percy L O V E S Snape and admires everything he does, he definitely criticises his siblings (*cough* Ron) whenever they say anything bad about him.

Fred and George seem to be amused by him despite thinking he’s a git (though I doubt they took anything he said seriously) and I think they had natural talent in potions. Snape definitely values experimental projects and creativity (considering his spell creations and rewriting his potions book), which the twins have, so despite their troublemaking antics I’m sure he at the very least respected their creativity (this is a headcanon I’ve had for such a long time, I’m so happy I can finally talk about it lmao).

I think Severus mostly disliked Ron because of his association with Harry, his disregard for school rules, and his laziness in class, but I think out of the trio he tolerated Ron the most (they’re also both my fave characters in the series so I just like the thought of them being cool with each other lmao).

As for Ginny, I don’t think he hated her, but he found her mildly annoying because of her obvious crush on Harry in CoS and then in the later books when she came out of her shell. She didn’t complain about him much, the closest thing we get is her saying that “Bill doesn’t like him either” as a reason for not liking him. Plus I always thought Ginny would’ve made a good Slytherin and wasn’t super annoying in class so I think he at least preferred her to Hermione lmao.

I think Snape was okay with Molly (and I think she respected him as a teacher, she liked him enough to correct Harry for calling him “Snape” instead of “Professor Snape”), but I think he probably didn’t respect Arthur’s love of Muggles and thought he was a bit silly, and I think he liked him less than Molly due to Lucius’s influence lmfao.

I know this has nothing to do with your original question, but can you tell I’ve had this headcanon for a really long time and jumped at the opportunity to rant about it? 😭

Hear me out:

Sirius travels to the future and goes to Hogwarts, he sees Remus as a professor and flirts with him and that kind of shit. It’s an au where Sirius in that timeline hasn’t escaped from Azkaban. He questions shit and Remus eventually tells him that he killed Lily, James and Peter and that he’s now in Azkaban and he can’t accept it, he has a mental breakdown. He finds out about what happened to the others like Marlene, Dorcas, Evan, Barty, Mary, Pandora etc. And he sees Luna yk and thinks about Pandora and he’s like “wait I thought Pandora was with Lily?”

then together they figure out what really happened cuz they see Peter on the marauders map. And they deal with him.

Then Sirius sees Harry and goes: “holy shit he looks just like James!! Am I an uncle?” And when Harry gets a little closer, he goes: “wait- his eyes? Why does he have blue eyes?” And Remus has to explain to him that Regulus joined the death eaters and died when he was 17 and that Harry’s mother is Lily and Sirius goes through another mental breakdown. And after he’s calmed down, he’s like: “so I’m not his uncle?” And Remus is like: “you’re the godfather.” And Sirius cheers up a little.

And when he sees that Harry is in love with Draco he is like: why do the potters have smth for the snarky, sad, depressed, Slytherin seekers who’s mean to them. And ppl from the black family. (I count Draco as a black cuz Narcissa is a black so yeah) (Regulus and Draco both getting the dark mark cuz they were forced😭😭😭)

and when Harry gets a tiny crush on ginny sirius goes like: HIS BEST MATES SIBLING?! OH LOOK HOW FUNNY SHES A GINGER TOO! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? See moony I told you it’s in his genes. (You can decide yourself if it’s endgame hinny or Drarry)

And he sees the Weasley twins and he’s like: “they’re my new idols!!” And Remus is like: “We’re their idols actually”

And he sees himself and James in Ron and Harry.

And after a few months when Sirius has caught up with everything, he flirts with Remus and is like: “you know moony I’m horny” and Remus is like: “well I can’t do anything about it, that would be pedophilia” and Sirius is like disappointed. But they eventually have sex (help😭Sirius is like 15 or 16 btw) and Sirius is like: “yOuR cOcK hAs GrOwN”. They take every chance they get to make out. And Remus is like: “oh how much I’ve missed this, missed you”

(They’re at Hogwarts btw) (it’s up to you if he pretends like he’s a student or if he’s hiding in Remus’ room) (but some professors would know if Sirius pretended like he was a student) (maybe he goes in disguise with polyjuice potion or smth?)

(He meets Harry if he’s just hiding and tells him everything but if you decide him to disguise as a student then he just watches from afar and doesn’t talk to him often.)

Remus asks him if this counts as cheating on his past self. And Sirius is like: “no you’re still you, so cheating on you with you is impossible”

Mcgonagall finds out about Sirius but doesn’t tell anyone.

Oh and it takes place during PoA and GoF. But the events just don’t happen, it’s like a normal Hogwarts year. So yeah no voldy coming back. Or no Sirius escaping Azkaban.

You can decide if Remus stays at Hogwarts during GoF or not, like the events didn’t happen so he doesn’t have to leave. But it’s up to you if he leaves and lives with Sirius in his house during GoF. But they’re definitely at Hogwarts during PoA.

and a bit to the end of GoF they figure out a way to send Sirius back to the 70s. Sirius says goodbye to everyone and leaves (Remus is like FUCKING sad cuz he has no one left) and as soon as Sirius is back he begs his brother to run away with him so that that terrible things don’t happen and he talks to James and Remus about Peter, and they do smth to fix that.

So yeah that was it

Why do you think the Weasley family didnt allow Ginny to play Quidditch? Afterall the sport is not segerated by sex at Hogwarts and all her brothers are used to young girls starting age 12 joining the Quidditch team and being team mates. In fact why is Ginny's interest the sport hidden to begin with when its the number one entertainment in the WW? (she doesnt join the World Cup talk in book 4, she is shocked at Krums wronski feint move, falls asleep at the after match talk, no mention of posters or love for Qudittich players in the ealier books as an excited little girl etc)

Like, out of Story, I'd say JKR just decided on Ginny's interest in Quidditch when she wrote book 5 and she decided Ginny would be Harry's love interest (honestly, I don't think it was all that planned).

In-universe, I'd say the younger Ginny probably isn't interested in Quidditch as a sport. Like, I think she was interested in playing because her brothers did (hence why she broke into the broom shed), but her interest in professional Quidditch was sparked only later, and likely not from home. I kinda headcanon she started growing an interest in professional Quidditch because, as she said in book 6, never really grew out of her crush on Harry, so she looked into it at first as a means of getting close to Harry. To have a common interest with him. I think she grew to love Quidditch on her own though, Harry was just what sparked the initial interest. That would explain why in the earlier books she isn't involved in any Quidditch talks or trying out for the team, she isn't interested yet in Quidditch as a professional sport.

As for why Molly would disapprove of Ginny's interest in Quidditch... the only quote I could track down about it is this:

“Come on, Ginny’s not bad,” said George fairly, sitting down next to Fred. “Actually, I dunno how she got so good, seeing how we never let her play with us...” “She’s been breaking into your broom shed in the garden since the age of six and taking each of your brooms out in turn when you weren’t looking,” said Hermione from behind her tottering pile of Ancient Rune books. “Oh,” said George, looking mildly impressed. “Well — that’d explain it.”

Fred and George imply they were the ones who didn't let her play with them, as a sort of "annoying the youngest sister" thing and a "ugh, the younger sibling is on the field so now we need to be gentle", and not so much Molly not allowing her to play.

I'm sure as the only daughter, Molly was incredibly overprotective of her, and I actually remembered Ginny being forbidden to play by her, but when I went back I couldn't find any quote about it. Just her older brothers leaving her out, which, is pretty usual with siblings. Ron also mentions they didn't let him join them all that much, so, it's just Ron and Ginny being the youngest siblings and left out and not Molly being unfair towards Ginny.

So, Ginny wasn't forbidden from playing by her parents, her brothers just didn't want the little sister to play too because than they'd need to change how they play to accommodate. Because you could bet that if Ginny was playing Molly would shout at them being too forceful.

Hermione blinked in surprise, caught off guard by the unexpected challenge. "What? Why?"

Ginny grinned, nudging Hermione playfully. "Just to prove you're not a wimp, Hermione. You're always so focused on your studies and rules. This'll show everyone you can be spontaneous."

Ron chimed in, adding his own teasing encouragement. "Yeah, come on, Hermione. Live a little!"

Caught between reluctance and a desire to prove herself, Hermione hesitated. She was usually one to follow the rules, but the prospect of breaking out of her usual mold intrigued her.

After a moment's contemplation, Hermione squared her shoulders, a determined glint in her eyes. "Fine. I'll do it."

"And if she does say okay, you have to do at it for a month"

"Okay okay, whatever"

With her friends' cheers echoing in her ears, Hermione set off to fulfill the dare, unaware of the surprising turn her evening was about to take.

And so she found herself standing before you in the Gryffindor common room, disturbing you from the muggle book you were reading, nervously biting her lip. She'd been dared to ask you out as part of a silly game, but she couldn't deny the flutter of nerves in her stomach as she awaited your response.

"Um, Y/n," she began, her voice a touch uncertain, "I, uh, I was wondering if you'd like to, um, go out with me?"

"Sure, Hermione," you replied with a smile, unaware of the dare that prompted her invitation. "I'd love to go out with you."

Hermione's cheeks flushed pink at your words, her breath catching in her throat as she met your gaze. With a tender smile, you reached up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, your fingers lingering against her soft skin.

The dormitory was silent as Hermione paced back and forth, rehearsing the words she would use to finally come clean to you. But before she could gather her courage, the door burst open with a force that made her jump.

"Is it true?" you demanded, your voice echoing off the walls of the empty room, your eyes blazing with a mix of hurt and anger.

Hermione froze, her heart pounding in her chest as she met your gaze. "Y/n, please, let me explain—"

"Is it true?" you repeated, your voice rising with each word, the fury in your eyes intensifying. "Did you ask me out as a bloody dare?"

Hermione's throat tightened as she struggled to find the right words, her mind racing with excuses and explanations. "Y/n, I… I didn't mean for it to—"

"IS IT TRUE?" you roared, your fists clenched at your sides, your whole body trembling with emotion.

Tears welled in Hermione's eyes as she met your gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yes," she admitted, her voice breaking with regret. "Yes, it's true."

The air crackled with tension as you paced furiously around Hermione's room, your hands running through your hair in frustration. "Why? Why would you do that"

Hermione's eyes filled with tears as she struggled to find the right words, her voice trembling with emotion. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Y/n. It was just a stupid dare, I swear—"

"A stupid dare?" you spat, rounding on her with fire in your eyes. "Do you have any idea how much you've hurt me? How could you think this was okay?"

Hermione's defenses rose as she felt the sting of your words, her own anger bubbling to the surface. "I made a mistake, okay? I never meant for it to go this far, but you have to understand—"

"Understand?" you interrupted, your voice rising with each word. "Understand what, Hermione? That you thought it would be funny to toy with my emotions? That you thought it was okay to manipulate me for your own amusement?"

Hermione's eyes flashed with indignation as she took a step forward, her hands trembling with pent-up frustration. "I didn't manipulate you, Y/n! I never wanted to hurt you—I just wanted to prove that I wasn't a wimp, that's all!"

"A wimp?" you scoffed, disbelief coloring your tone. "Is that what this was about? You're so afraid of being seen as weak that you're willing to hurt someone else just to prove a point?"

The room fell silent as the weight of your words hung heavy in the air, the truth of them ringing painfully in Hermione's ears. For a moment, all that could be heard was the sound of their ragged breaths and the pounding of their hearts.

And then, with a heavy sigh, Hermione spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm sorry, Y/n. I'm so, so sorry."

The tension in the room was palpable, thick with unspoken words and shattered trust. You stood there, seething with anger and hurt, while Hermione's heart raced with guilt and regret. She knew she had to explain herself, had to make you understand the depths of her remorse.

"Y/n, please," Hermione began, her voice trembling as she took a tentative step forward. "I hate myself for what I did. I hate myself for hurting you, for betraying your trust. I never wanted any of this to happen, I swear."

Her words spilled out in a torrent, her voice cracking with emotion as she poured her heart out. "I've spent every moment since that stupid dare regretting it. Regretting the pain I caused you, the way I let my fear of being seen as weak cloud my judgment. I know I messed up, Y/n, and I don't expect you to forgive me, but I need you to know that I'm truly sorry."

You remained silent, your eyes locked on hers as you processed her words. The pain and hurt in your gaze tore at Hermione's heart, and she felt tears prickle at the corners of her eyes.

"I fell for you, Y/n," Hermione continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "I fell for you in a way I never thought possible. And I hate myself for using something as precious as love as part of a stupid game. But please, please believe me when I say that my feelings for you are real. I would never do anything to hurt you intentionally."

Before she could say anything more, you closed the distance between you in a single stride, your lips crashing against hers in a desperate, passionate kiss. It was a kiss filled with a whirlwind of emotions—anger, hurt, longing, and yes, even a glimmer of forgiveness.

Here's the trouble with this premise as I would want to write it:

1. How do married hinny end up in Grimmauld Place in 1995? Idk, they just do, because I want them there.

2. What's the point of them being there? Look, I just think Sirius deserves to see grown up Harry happy and healthy and being a loved up idiot like his father.

Also, I want to see Harry squirm as he realises there's a reason he always knows what Ginny's doing even when it's completely irrelevant. It's a revelation I personally would enjoy watching him have while being watched by his future self, a large component of the Order, and half of Ginny's brothers (not to mention Ginny herself... both teenaged and adult version).

Also, also, OotP!Harry would be absolutely horrified by his adult counterpart's behaviour and it amuses me greatly. From awkward, crying kisses with Cho Chang to effortless intimacy with Ginny Weasley, in the wise words of Boyzone, life is a roller coaster.

3. Right, but why? Does someone remember it? Does it change something? Does someone learn an important lesson? No, it's just ✨️vibes✨️

Voldemort was just trying to get info to kill Harry but Ginny wrote about his pretty green eyes and fancy hair and forced Voldemort to notice. Then he wrote a poem and possessed Ginny so she’d give it to Harry.

that they workshopped that poem together - and that they jointly thought it ate - is canon to me.

when he says to harry in the chamber:

"Imagine how angry I was when the next time my diary was opened, it was Ginny who was writing to me, not you." 

he's saving face by skimming over something very important. what he meant to say was clearly:

"Imagine how angry I was when the next time my diary was opened, it was Ginny who was writing to me, telling me that our poem completely flopped, and not you telling me that it was so good you'd fallen in love with us both."

Canon wise and as far as we know from ginny in 7th book, how does she react to breaking up with harry or even drarry?

Oooh! This is an interesting question. Because here's the thing. There's the way she reacts in front of Harry...and then the way she apparently reacts when he's not around.

So in book 6 he breaks up with her and she's basically just like '...k' and doesn't bother Harry with inconvenient things like feelings or having a different opinion from him.

Listen. It's good to have loved ones who support you. But the way in book 6 and 7 Ginny just never disagrees with Harry or argues with him or even makes him feel awkward or bad or inconvenienced and is just utterly compliant feels off. Here the thing he likes is that she just accepts his decision. Because it's easy and simple. But that feels like her putting on a front. A healthy and good relationship is more than one person just accepting what the other does. Sometimes if you love someone that means having hard conversations with them or telling them something they don't like.

Look at how often Hermione disagrees with Harry or calls him out when she thinks he's making a bad choice. Because she cares about him. And sure sometimes Harry disagrees with her or even gets annoyed with her. But he also respects her. And they work it out because they have a very deep and authentic and loving friendship where they can disagree and show their feelings to each other and argue etc. Same with Hermione and Ron or Harry and Ron.

In fact, same with Harry and Ginny in book 5 where Ginny DOES express opinions and stand up to Harry. But not in book 6 or 7. Suddenly she has a total personality change and is creepily determined to become whoever she has to in order to win Harry's affections even though it's all a lie and she has to repress everything about herself.

It's also notable in this scene that she doesn't cry. This makes things easy on Harry and lets him avoid an uncomfortable situation. But as we'll see momentarily it's not actually reflective of her emotional state. You should feel comfortable enough around someone to show them your feelings, even if it's awkward or inconvenient. And she doesn't. We get this in book 6:

And then in book 7 we get this:

So based on all these quotes we might imagine that Ginny's fine with the breakup or perhaps even unaffected. But no. Apparently away from Harry it's a whole different story. Apparently she is devastated and really struggling to cope with the whole thing.

After that book 7 scene we learn this from Ron:

We NEVER see Ginny being "really cut up" at all. But apparently Ron did. Because Ginny felt comfortable enough around her brother to express her actual feelings. But she never felt comfortable doing this with Harry. That's not a good sign for their relationship.

Hermione cries around Harry. And in book 7 Harry actually feels comfortable comforting her even though it's something that doesn't come naturally. She also feels comfortable sharing her emotions with Ron - whether bickering or here, in book 6 when she and Ron comfort each other in stark contrast to Ginny apparently holding in tears around Harry to avoid doing anything he doesn't like:

So yeah. Imho hinny is doomed. I think it's realistic that it happened but I think it was more lust than love on Harry's part and also wanting to have some normalcy during a very stressful time. And for Ginny I think it was more fangirl awe than real love.

I think after the war it's plausible that they keep meaning to get together again but somehow never do. After the battle Harry thinks he'll talk to Ginny about everything later but somehow later never comes. Meanwhile Ginny finds that when she wants to talk about what happened at Hogwarts during 7th year she's gravitating more to Neville who was beside her all along (yeah there's my ginny/neville shipper brain coming out). And I think kind of like Harry and Cho they just sort of fall apart. If they DO get back together then of course I think the breakup is worse.

Either way Harry's really worried that he'll lose the Weasleys over it. He doesn't of course, but things between him and Ginny are awkward for a while. Eventually they both end up with other people and once Ginny is in a happy relationship of her own - and realizes how much better things are than when she was with Harry - things get easier.

thoughts on Ginny and Harry as a couple?

There are a lot of people who find their romance in HBP forced. I don't think it's forced so much as underwritten, and the books don't get the chemistry quite right (though the movies certainly don't, either). There's potential, but they just don't get enough actual scenes of substance (besides Harry thinking she's pretty or feeling jealous of Dean) for a lot of readers to buy that they're not only in love, but deeply enough in love to break up, get back together, and wind up married.

That's not to say I don't see the appeal. There's a very cool scene in Book 5 where Harry's doing a woe-is-me-Chosen-One act, and Ginny effortlessly puts him in his place about it by reminding him that she was possessed by Voldemort at eleven, which is a rare glimpse into her character and also a great synecdoche for their relationship — Ginny is a grounding presence who, like Ron and Hermione, isn't going to be awed by his past adventures because she knew him before they happened. In that respect, Ginny's probably one of the few women Harry could feasibly wind up with, because he only ever seems comfortable around people (let alone girls) who can see past the Chosen-One schtick and treat him like a normo (see: Ron, Hermione, the Weasleys, Luna, Hagrid). True to type, he doesn't get interested in Ginny at all until she's ditched her celebrity crush and ceased to view him as an idol, because in his heart of hearts, Harry wants to be a normal boy, and it's stressed over and over that part of what he likes about his relationship with Ginny is how normal it feels. He kind of has a horribly supercharged version the celebrity dating problem: after the Battle of Hogwarts, anyone he meets is going to know him first as Harry Potter, Chosen One, Boy Who Lived, and Actually Fucking Resurrected Messiah of the Wizarding World, which is... I mean, it's possible that there are witches out there who could get over that, but Harry's not an extroverted guy, and I'm not sure how he'd go about finding them. Ginny's the one who's been there since the beginning, doesn't need anything about him or his past explained to her, and actually likes him for who he is.

When you look at it that way, it's not surprising he married his high school girlfriend. She's one of the few people still alive who doesn't see him as a demigod.
