. . . .
The early hours of twilight were serene. The weather was just right, with a breeze to quell the lingering heat of the day. The moon shone just enough to guide the sleepy workers home. The first few stars blinked into the night as Jeonghan stood on the balcony of his room that offered a grand view of Kyoshi Island. Silently, his finger toyed with the stem of the white lotus he had plucked from the pond earlier. Blossom season had already passed on Kyoshi Island; hence, flowers were scarce. This was the least he could do for you to decorate you for your special day.
He sucked harshly on his pipe, letting the smoke fill his lungs as he closed his eyes, letting himself drift into the memories of the past. It had been a while since he had lived in such luxury after assuming your care.
He almost forgot, he was an elite soldier of the Earth Kingdom at some point.
Oh how he used to long for spacious bedrooms, silk sheets, and geese-feather pillows all those nights he had to squeeze himself onto a bamboo mat and thread-bare blankets under a shield of towering trees. Though they felt familiar, it not longer felt right. He snorted, not believing the way he preferred gruel to fine dishes now.
Times have changed, he guessed.
The screen door behind him suddenly slid open – Jeonghan didn’t have to open his eyes to know who it was. He could tell it was you from the heavy and rigid footsteps. Wonwoo’s were swift and quiet.
Jeonghan smiled to himself. It was unfortunate that you didn’t develop the swiftness of a waterbender. However, he couldn’t help, but feel a small piece of joy, knowing his earthbender roots sank deep into your development.
“Y/N,” Jeonghan spun around to greet you. Immediately, his gaze softened at you in your wedding garment: a simple fitted, long-sleeve white robe with deep green detailing along the hem and the waist. Light makeup dusted your features, your hair donned into a simple, neat bun. “You clean up nice, kid.”
You snorted, slumping over in your posture and made your way to stand beside him. You made a point to bump his shoulder. Jeonghan only chuckled, reaching up to tuck the lotus in your hair.
“What’s that?” you reached up to feel the soft petals.
“A white lotus,” Jeonghan explained, “It represents mental purity – not exactly what I have in mind as romantic for a wedding, but alas, it seems like the last flower growing on this floating piece of dirt they call an island.”
You nodded, amused. “Didn’t take you to be a flower guy.”
“There is much you don’t know about me, kid,” he made a point to secure it extra well, earning a small wince from you at the pressure. “Never underestimate an old man.”
“Noted,” you shifted to stand next to him when he finished.
The two of you stayed like this a while longer, standing side-by-side and admiring the way the village below lit up, one building at a time. A simple view, but calming nonetheless.
“What’s on your mind?” Jeonghan asked, breaking the silence. You were normally talkative – he had raised you long enough to know that something was wrong when you grew quiet.
You only shifted from one foot to another, face contorting as you tried to find the right words to voice your concerns.
Jeonghan took one last puff of his pipe before turning to you and casting it aside.
“You’ll die sooner if you keep smoking that thing,” you said abruptly.
Jeonghan chuckled, crossing his arms. “So kind of you to worry about my health when my head is about to be on your father’s table for handing you to the enemy.”
At this, you shrank back, any last words of banter suddenly evaporating from your tongue.
“A-are you sure about this?” you stammered. You peered up at him, nervously.
“About what?” Jeonghan asked. “Finally getting you hitched so I can get you out of my hair?”
“Jeonghan,” you said sternly, taking a step towards him. He glanced at you from the side and offered you a warm smile to help ease your worries.
“I’ve lived a long and dangerous life, Y/N,” Jeonghan explained. “There’s not much that scares me anymore – not even death, itself.”
You gulped, feeling tears pricking your eyes.
Today was supposed to be a happy occasion, but here you were on the verge of tears – and for what? An old man who teased you on the regular and smacked your wrists and ankles when you messed up a stance.
“Then, what does scare you?” you asked hesitantly.
“There’s a reason why I agreed to all of this, you know?” Jeonghan started. You were so . . . puzzled at how someone could look so serene in a situation like this. “You may not have been my child by blood, but in some ways, I feel more like your father than your father himself.
“He doesn’t know you hate anchovies. He doesn’t know that you can fix most things, but not sew. He doesn’t know you can’t sleep at night unless there’s a lantern on because you’re still scared of the dark,” Jeonghan paused, returning his gaze to the village. “You are my child and there’s nothing more a parent fears than losing them.”
You felt the first tear spill from your inner corner, trailing down the side of your nose.
“But,” Jeonghan sighed, reaching over to swipe the tear from your cheek, “Even if he is stubborn, emotionally constipated at times, and most certainly your birth father’s last choice as a suitor . . . I trust Wonwoo. He will protect you, be it bandits on the road or his own people even.” Though he was smiling, melancholy laced his features, settling into the wrinkles on his forehead. To lighten the mood, he joked, “And I guess, he seems to like you enough and he makes you happy, so who am I to take that away from you – and vice versa.”
You managed to choke a small chortle amidst the sniveling. You shook your head, your heart filling with somber feelings that drowned you ability to even be upset and worried for him.
“Oh my, Y/N,” Jeonghan cooed. The pads of his thumbs swiped away at more tears. He then squeezed your cheeks together, your lips puffing like that of a fish. “Don’t cry so much – you’re gonna ruin your makeup! Can’t look ugly for Wonwoo or he’ll run away and I’ll be stuck with you forever!”
“You talk too much, old man,” you grumbled as you launched yourself into his chest. Jeonghan’s arms were quick to wrap tight around your shoulders, rubbing soothing circles into your back.
He was glad the two of you were positioned like this where you were facing opposite directions – you wouldn’t see him cry.
You didn't have to voice it for Jeonghan to know it.
“I love you too, kid,” he muttered into your crown.
. . . .
What if the sun kissed the moon?
An eclipse merely meant the two heavenly bodies were aligned in parallel: one blocking the other from view every few decades. It was similar to the one or two seconds in which two strangers in the streets of Ba Sing Se passed one another. The irony in which two seemingly similar events were viewed in such contrast. One event was of essence, determining the fate of humanity; the other was blissful ignorance.
Yet, this was the way of society – the way of the universe: the moon and the sun were fated to be strangers who merely passed each other every few seconds in the infinite cycle of time.
They weren’t meant to be close to one another; but they also weren’t meant to be too far from one another.
So, what if the sun kissed the moon?
A kiss meant . . . a collision.
Chaos.
Catastrophe.
Disorder.
Yet, they yearned for it more than anything.
He who harvested his energy from the sun and she who felt the most powerful when the moon was full and bright. Yet, it was she who made his flame burn brightest and he who commanded her tides into hurricanes. They were worlds apart, but like the lovers of Omashu, they chose to reside in the fragile in-between, dancing an equally delicate dance and playing a game of push and pull to see who would leave first.
But neither of them did.
Your wedding was kept simple: a bowl of rice, the jade hairpin from the Festival of the Badger Mole, and Jeonghan’s prized dagger. Lady Rin and Jeonghan bore witness to your marriage.
Cheeks stuffed with his half of rice, Wonwoo passed it to you to be finished. You couldn’t help, but giggle at him a little – it wasn’t every day the fierce warrior looked like a chipmunk. As if he read your mind, he was quick to turn away from you and hide the growing sheepish smile. The tips of his ears were tinted pink, your smile transforming into a grin. You wondered if he was going to get the hiccups with how fast he was chewing.
Gingerly, you accepted the red bowl with both hands and held it to your lips. Though he was too shy to meet your eyes, you gave him one last look, sucking in a slow breath to engrave this memory of him in your mind. His face was clean of dirt and ashes that often smudged his cheeks, making him look seemingly more youthful than previous. You even noted how his hair had grown a little, the tips skimming his sharp brows. To match your outfit, he wore a beige tunic with deep green detailing – four buttons were aligned along his collarbone, strips of fabric were tightened around his wrist and forearms.
Neither of you were earthbenders, yet in their kingdom and draped in their traditional clothing, you both felt more like yourselves than you ever did in your own respective nations.
Here, he stumbled upon you (quite literally).
Here, he became the companion you didn’t know you were missing.
Here, without realizing, you built a safe haven.
He may not have known you your whole life, but he was there when you collapsed from overtraining trying to create a water whip. He was there to cheer and hug (though it was unintentional at the time) you when you first drew water from the leaves.
But better yet, it was the little things with him that made you love him the most.
Doing laundry was surprisingly entertaining – he was still getting the hang of the washing process, slipping more than once into the river. His hand in yours in walks in the market brought comfort and reassurance. He complained you about your bland cooking, but for some reason still ate it happily - it gave you all the more purpose to keep doing so.
A warmth bloomed in your chest, not out of unease, but rather certainty. Perhaps it was not the fate society predestined for the both of you, but it felt right.
This wasn’t a blind and impulsive decision as most would’ve thought. You both pondered on it, fought over it even, over several days and nights. Tossed and turned on the inn mats, gave one another the silent treatment when the pressure became too much, only to relent a day or two later, apologizing for your actions and quickly falling back into old habits.
Alas all of it to arrive at only one conclusion: love was more than enough.
You never imagined it to feel quite like this – something stronger than gravity, something you needed more than food and water itself. Now that you knew it, without it felt like you were floating away; without it you felt hollow.
Amidst all the decisions in your life, choosing Wonwoo was the only one you were sure of. You could only hope he felt the same having agreed to marry you.
“Hurry up,” you heard Jeonghan hiss.
You scowled at him playfully, but he continued to usher you to finish your half. Opening your mouth you emptied the rice from the bowl, chewing it slowly. It was now Wonwoo’s turn to snicker at your demeanor, but he always took it a step further than yourself.
“Cute,” you heard him whisper under his breath. He reached over to pinch your cheeks.
Heat bloomed across your face. You shrank back from him, bringing a hand up to cool your skin to no avail. You resorted to the next solution of looking away from your lover, but only to be met with Jeonghan’s shit-eating grin.
“Look at this,” he nudged Lady Rin annoyingly. “Young love!”
The proposal ritual was quickly followed by the exchange of gifts. They weren’t new or expensive per se, but they were cherished possessions.
You tucked the dagger in Wonwoo’s waist belt and he spun you around to place the jade pin next to the white lotus  in your hair. He glanced at Jeonghan, figuring this was the elder man’s doing. You were never really into flowers.
“I don’t believe in fate,” Wonwoo commented as he pushed the pin into your bun, “But this must mean something, right?”
“What do you mean?” you asked.
“It’s Kyoshi tradition for the groom to give the bride a hairpin,” Wonwoo explained. “Kind of like . . . rings in the Fire Nation or necklaces in the Northern Water Tribe.”
“Are you saying you were proposing to me then? At the festival?” you snickered, turning around to face him. Your hands settled on his waist, mindlessly toying with his belt.
Wonwoo reached for your hands, encasing them in his own. The rough pads of his thumb grazed across your knuckles.
“You didn’t refuse,” he teased back.
Taking him by surprise, you let go of Wonwoo’s hands and reached for his collar, gripping the stiff fabric into your fists. He winced, breath hitching at how close your faces were. If he just tilted forward a little more –
“I was a fool not to,” you joked quietly.
He knew you didn’t mean it.
“You can’t take it back now,” he noted, voice equally soft.
Wonwoo wasn’t sure who moved first, you or him. With how the gesture felt like a reflex, perhaps it was him. He could care less about Jeonghan teasing him later this evening about being too eager – fleeting moments of embarrassment were quickly pushed aside. The truth was, Wonwoo was eager – eager to seal this union, eager to officially call you his, and eager to show the world what couldn’t be.
Kissing you always felt like the first time: a spark that tingled his lips, followed by a familiar warmth that embraced his chest and the sense of ease ensued. He didn’t dare tell you, but it was probably his new favorite feeling: the rush of adrenaline and the gentle float down from cloud nine, greeted by the fact that you weren’t just a dream.
A collision of worlds and phenomenon of what was forbidden come true: Jeon Wonwoo and you were an anomaly the world was never prepared to face.
But perhaps amidst the segregation, war-torn nations, and unrest regarding the avatar's disappearance, perhaps you both were what the world needed.
They just didn't know it yet.
And neither did you.

Autistic Anime Boys Tournament Bracket
Heeey guys! It’s finally time for our next tournament! Get ready to pit all your favorite autistic anime* boys against one another~ 😈😈😈 The same rules as the autistic anime girls poll apply here, but I will reiterate them below.
*Note: I understand that the term ‘anime’ does not, semantically, apply to every character that I will allow into the poll—I am simply using the term in a general manner, because it is quick to say and widely recognized. Characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games/visual novels, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.
No western media, unless the characters are deliberately designed in an 'anime-style’ (ex: in the past, I have allowed characters from things like DDLC). It can't be a temporary or one-off gag style-change either. It must be the series' regular artstyle. Judging this will be my subjective opinion, but I am going to be excluding animation that stylistically toes the line (sorry AtLA and VLD fans).
Don't submit Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100. His autism swag is too powerful and iconic, so I've decided he will be the mascot of this tourney. The winner of the poll will be rewarded with a special exhibition match against Mob. 👍👍
The characters do not need to be canonically autistic. Headcanons are perfectly fine.
You can submit as many characters as you like, but do not submit the same character multiple times.
Submit characters through the designated Google form. Any sent through asks/messages/any other means will be ignored and you’ll be kindly redirected to the form. Just keeps things more organized this way.
Don't be a dick if your fav loses. Please. Let's all be civil here and have a good time. Doing tumblr polls is entirely for fun!
Definitely send propaganda for the contestants! I love hearing people infodump about their favs.
This time around, I will not make submitting propaganda a requirement on the form, but it does significantly increase your character’s chances of getting into the bracket.
I will attempt to be more selective for this poll, to avoid an enormous bracket like last time (I just have a tendency to get attached to submissions and can’t help but let in as many as I can 😅), but I won’t officially decide on the number of competitors until after submissions close.
Good luck! May the best boy win!
SUBMISSIONS OPEN NOV. 28TH – JAN. 2ND

Truth time.
Hating on a show before it even premieres all because of developing changes is very narrow-minded. You've already given up on the actors who have poured their soul into every scene. You've given up on the animators who have given every ounce of their artistic energy to ensure we have an authentic final edit. You're giving up on the choreographers who specialize in martial arts that were beyond excited to consult on a project of this scale.
So yes, some things have been changed. Does that mean it will be terrible? Who knows. But you haven't even given it a chance.
Changes are a part of life. In the world of remakes, I think we've already learned that change is needed to draw attention to a new audience. Personally, I welcome newcomers to the ATLA fandom. They'll have the chance to watch the original series, to watch Legend of Korra, to read the comics, to read our beloved fanfics.
I have Asian and indigenous friends who are incredibly excited to see the live action and support the actors 100% no matter what the final story arc will be. It means so much to them that Netflix took the time to build out a cast in a way that is far more authentic, casting-wise than either the original animated series or movie that shall not be named was. By dismissing the show before the premiere, you're dismissing their work and their own creativity.
So, please. Slow up on the hatred for some of us out here who want to give the show a chance. Will it be a hit? Probably not (it is Netflix). But does it deserve to be judged on the series itself and not assumptions that are already being made? Absolutely.
Seriously, the level of anger and frustration in these posts is depressing and in a world that is plenty depressing on its own, why don’t we all take a step back for a few weeks and just chill.
If you're not happy with the changes, fine. Don't watch it. Just don't try to ruin it for others by influencing their opinion before the show even premieres.

Do you have any fics where john or sherlock are mutants/ have powers?
Hi Lovely!
OOOOOOOHHHH I love this; I have a few fics that could be qualified as "CLOSE" to mutations and superpowers, but not 100%. I have a lot more "changelings" than anything else. I've compiled together some of the ones on my MFL list as well, but I can't guarantee that they're mutants in them since I haven't read them.
If anyone has any fics that they can suggest, please do! I'm kind of into MCU fics right now so if I can have Sherlock-style in there too, that would be awesome! PLEASE let us know if you have mutant or Superhero Johnlock fics!!!

Trenchcoats and Capes by jomochi (T, 35,275 w., 3 Ch. || Superhero AU || UST/URT, Mutually Unrequited, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Love Confessions, Secret Identity, Hero John) – He’s twirling a strand of hair around the finger of his other hand. His coat, which honestly looks more like a cape than anything, is spread out beneath him. His chest rises and falls slowly with calm breaths, the tight black material of his suit stretching to accommodate the movement. John has seen many pictures of him but not one did him any justice. The sight before John is breath-taking. It isn’t right. Evil shouldn’t look this good.
The Alchemystics by elwinglyre (E, 69,014 w., 16 Ch. || Full Metal Alchemist Omegaverse AU || Non-Traditional ABO Dynamics, Major Character Injury, Angst, Human Transmutation) – Since youth, Sherlock was forced to hide who he was from the world. That time has ended. With the world torn apart, he must embrace who and what he is: an alchemystic and an omega. Fortunately, he finds another, John Watson, who is a true compliment to himself. With Watson’s help, Sherlock strives to obtain what’s needed to right the world. But the past, present and future aren’t aligning, and what is needed to succeed comes at a high cost: for to gain, something of equal value must be lost--that is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. No one knows this lesson better than Sherlock. He’s lost his father, his brother and his arm attempting to bring his mother back from the dead. What will he need to sacrifice to save the world?
The Destruction of Ice by All_I_need (E, 91,682 w., 28 Ch. || Psy - Changeling Crossover/Fusion || Changeling John, Psy Sherlock, Murder Investigation / Case Fic, Slow Burn, Touching, Forced Lack of Emotion, Silence Protocol, Sci-Fi Elements) – The year is 2081 and Sherlock Holmes never expected to encounter a threat to his Silence, the conditioning that keeps him sane and unfeeling. John Watson, on the other hand, never thought he'd find a flat in London. He certainly didn't expect to find one that comes with a Psy flatmate: brilliant, emotionless and more intriguing than John would like. When a series of brutal, random murders shakes London to its core, it is up to them to stop a vicious psychopath - preferably before Sherlock's latest experiment gets them both killed.
A Vintage Exceptionally to Your Liking by EmmyAngua (E, 95,334 w., 19 Ch. || Alternate Dimensions AU || S3 Fix It, Lies, Angst, Pining Sherlock, Superpowers, Domestics, BAMF Mary, Hiatus, First Time, Magical Realism, Slow Burn, Colliding Universes, Moral Dilemmas, Betrayal, Mary’s Past) – Sherlock and John met seven years earlier than canon and fell in love. When John dies, Sherlock is introduced to the concept of alternate dimensions and given the opportunity to visit a different universe where he can have a second chance with a new John Watson. A love story across alternate dimensions.

hello !!
i was wondering, do you know any other characters like aang from other shows/movies/books? or maybe, just his theme of radical kindness appearing in other stories?
i've been missing aang, and it would be nice to find other representations of such a fun and warm personality like his.
ps.: your blog is like, fantastic. truly.
🥰🥰🥰🥰 This is the best ask I’ve ever received!!! Depictions of radical kindness in media is a special interest of mine—not exaggerating. So I’ve done my best to make a list of rec’s, just tv, from most formally similar to ATLA to least, with a short description for each.
1. Fruits Basket (2019)
Tumblr media
"My mom told me, it's better to trust people than to doubt them. She said that people aren't born with kind hearts. When we're born, all we have are desires for food and material things. Selfish instincts, I guess. But she said that kindness is something that grows inside of each person's body, but it's up to us to nurture that kindness in our hearts. That's why kindness is different for every person."
An anime orphan whose established memory of the kindness by which her family raised her ends up transforming and liberating a whole clan from an intergenerational curse that enforced an abusive hierarchy all within a show that has a deeply queer subtext, beautifully complex plotting and character development that due to its zen influence refuses to demonize anyone or any perspective wholly, AND a straight romance you can actually root for!? Nothing comes closer to ATLA thematically than this show. While the lead Tohru Honda is the biggest representative of radical kindness, the character of Momiji Sohma with his complex purity, idealism, and gender performance is one of the closest you'll find to Aang in any media.
2. Mob Psycho 100 (2016-2023)
Tumblr media
"The truth behind one's charm is kindness. Just be a good person, that's all."
Mob Psycho 100 explores a core tenant of ATLA's critique of imperialism and power: greatness and perfection are overrated. They both ask the question about what to do for the world with one's gifts if that's the case. How can one be both normal and prodigious at the same time? The satirical comedy and style of this anime, which deconstruct a lot of the shonen genre tropes, are pretty distinct from ATLA, but when ATLA arrived on the airwaves, it was a pretty massive break from tradition in Western animation, and for both of these series, that difference of style is tied to the message of the show about the experience and acceptance of difference.
3. Natsume's Book of Friends (2012-present)
Tumblr media
"As I encountered kindness, I wanted to be kind myself."
The anime, Natsume's Book of Friends and ATLA both depict the challenge and necessity of facing abandonment, loss, and a deep-seated loneliness with kindness and gratitude despite the persistence of grief. Both take a deeply spiritual view--even a responsibility--of this experience that demands a compassion for all beings including those who intend to do harm. Natsume, an orphan shuffled between houses who is one of the few people who can see spirits called youkai, inherits his maligned grandmother's book of yokai names, becoming a target for them in the process. He hides all of this from everyone in his life, and even five season in, still has trouble admitting to the one person who understands him when he is struggling and needs help. The gentle and light tone papers over a profoundly honest representation of attachment trauma and the wisdom of compassion that develops as a tool to cope with it.
4. Hunter x Hunter (2011-2014)
Tumblr media
"You can do whatever you want to hide your feeling. You still have a heart."
If you think that "Radical Kindness" is by definition non-violent, then this show is either not for you or going to change your mind. Gon, the protagonist of HxH, like Momiji mentioned in Fruits Basket, is another rare character whose naivete and optimism are treated with respect. He is allowed to suffer, to be wrong, to be stupid, and to inspire others away from their own cynicism with the persistence of his beliefs nevertheless. But HxH is a show that integrates the most violent aspects of the world (organized crime, capitalistic competition and privileging, state-sanctioned brutality, pure sadism) with its examination of human potential for goodness. And even within a list of shows deeply inspired by spirituality and religions, this show is abundant with religious references as it seeks out meaning, balance, and an ethic for modern experience. On top of that, it ranks with ATLA for the depth and relevance of its magic system to its themes, plus its got gay subtext out the wazoo!
5. Mushishi (2005-2014)
Tumblr media
“Make sure to remember, every person and place has a right to exist. It is true for you too, the entire world, as a whole, is your home."
Elegaic, episodic, compassionate, and strange, with some of the best short story-telling of all time, Mushishi is the story of a medicine-man who travels the Japanese countryside helping people deal with the spirits that accompany the little trials and tragedies of life that cling to our minds long after they're passed. The protagonist, Gingko, and the show itself takes the approach of restraint to observe these problems fully and come to a conclusion that's taoist in its balance and acceptance of reality--"Eyes unclouded by hate" as Miyazaki/Gaiman would have it. Each episode is like a therapy session arguing for you to choose to live even as the heaviest burdens sit on your chest.
6. Reservation Dogs (2021-2023)
Tumblr media
"See...love doesn't have to be received, it can just be."
We're finally out of the animes, and moving away from the zen and shinto approach into some other options. Reservation Dogs' indigenous humanism was groundbreaking, bringing in distinctly modern American realities (with the kind of true-to-life details only a an on-location shoot could offer) with Native beliefs about ancestry, community, and connection to the land, while rarely feeling preachy. Instead, it's just fucking hilarious and casually heartbreaking. Four friends on the edge of graduating high school on a reservation in Oklahoma try to figure out what to do with their lives after their plans to go to California get abruptly messed up. Radical kindness as a concept often gets focused on accepting the enemy but what about accepting the weird stoner uncle who farts all the time and won't talk about his years in the army. I think that might be a more important goal of radical kindness, in truth, if we are being asked to look and accept reality for what it is, because growing comfortable with disappointment and the mundane let's us live without the relentless striving that drives perfectionism.
7. Skam (2015-2017)
Tumblr media
"The second you start looking for hate, you find it. And when you find hate, you start hating."
A Norwegian teen drama that understood internet culture better than any show before or since, four season-long romance plots better than any romance film from that decade, and a masterfully constructed exhortation about leaning into failures of connection to build deeper compassion rather than demonize another person or group. Each season focused on a specific character within a high-school friend group, emphasizing the limited scope of subjective experience, and had them confront the challenges of opening up to others fully. And even when they return into the scenes with new protagonists, their lives weren't sorted perfectly, reflecting how resolving a single romantic plot point would not resolve life. The impact of this low-budget public-television web series (!!!) will be felt for years (it's already been referenced by Netflix juggernauts like Sex Education and Young Royals), but we're not likely to see something that juggles political themes, heartfelt characterization, realistic dialogue, and meta-commentary (it flashed its own hater and fan comments across the screen in the last episode!!) in such a obsession-inducing package anytime soon.
7. Boys Like Boys (2023)
Tumblr media
"Because I have always been someone who hates myself, I don't have the courage to face it. Running away is my only option...What if I give myself one more chance to be brave?"
So how can a reality show make it onto a list of radically kind tv series, especially a dating show!? Well, when that reality dating show casts people who radiate warmth, vulnerability, and respect and seem to have the kind of chemistry that most scripted shows can't even manage, it's a good start. But then, when they elevate that cast with a format that addresses the cruelty of dating, elimination formats, and broader societal exclusion (an important consideration for a gay dating show), it offers a new model for future shows. Boys Like Boys did this when mid-season (spoiler alert) they had contestants vote out a contestant, only to provide the contestants with a vote in which they could retain a contestant who they didn't want to leave. In fact, many of the contestants asked if they could abstain from making a vote that would eliminate a constestant and were allowed to. The final result left one contestant, Jia-Hang, up for elimination--he had voted for himself to be eliminated, and many contestants, recognizing his reticence to continue on the program, didn't want to force him against his will to stay. Then, looking around at nearly the whole cast sobbing, even apologizing to him for not providing him enough support, Jia-Hang chooses to stay on. This is just one of many heart-warming authentic moments in the show that illustrate the vital influence of kindness to impact the trajectory of our hearts.
8. Joe Pera Talks With You (2018-2021)
Tumblr media
"I can help you reach things. I can tend the garden. The different hours we keep are a good thing. And when they overlap, I can offer companionship and entertainment."
So much has been written about this show's groundbreaking kind approach, I'm going to quote instead: "It can be difficult to convey how a TV show airing on Cartoon Network’s provocative nighttime programming block Adult Swim can evoke almost nostalgic feelings of kind-heartedness. The premise of Joe Pera Talks With You is so simple as to almost be beside the point: Comedian Joe Pera plays a lightly fictionalized version of himself as a sweet Michigander, a middle-school chorus teacher with small and specific passions. Joe likes breakfast food, obscure trivia, beans, trips to the grocery store, and his grandma. He greets every day with a contented smile, stands beneath a pale blue sky, packs a balanced lunch that contains no surprises. (A turkey sandwich with cheese and a tomato, a banana, some trail mix, and as a treat, some cookies.) Joe, more than anything, is satisfied. His greatest joy is sharing these small pleasures with you, the viewer who exists on the other side of the fourth wall he has cleanly dismantled, often speaking quietly to the camera like he’s sharing a secret, just between you two. That he’s talking “with” and not “to” you is a crucial distinction in the show’s title: Joe never lectures nor rhapsodizes. Instead, he waxes poetic about what he loves and who he cares for and how he leads his life, telling his stories from a vulnerable position of welcoming you into his daily existence.” --“A Great Comedy About Being Good,” Allegra Frank for Vox
9. Anne with an E (2017-2019)
Tumblr media
"Her life was not short on challenges, and still she held no grudges, believing instead that grace is perennial like the green, green grass."
While maligned for not being the 1980s version, this Netflix adaptation of Anne of Green Gables takes what many have read as an autistic subtext and made it text, giving Anne a performative quality that pushes a lot of the audience into the same irritation that the characters of Avonlea feel for Anne at first, and, thus, requires its audience to persevere toward the same kindness that Anne inspires in her adoptive mother figure, Marilla, among others, which is much more rewarding than simply identifying with Anne right away. In so doing, it enhances the development of its broader approach to acceptance--an approach in its insistence on the requirement of a community of kindredness (see Sebastian's excitement at finding out about the black community in "The Bog") that is much more rigorous than many other shows will cop to. Expanding far beyond literal adaptation into queer, black, and indigenous characters, without disguising history or disparaging the thematic seed of grace at the heart of the novels, Anne with an E imagines what it meant and what it might still mean to build real joyful community with others through kindness.
10. Little Bear (1995-2003)
Tumblr media
"Interesting."
A childhood favorite that disguised in its simplicity a wide-openness to the world and an acceptance of different natures. While most child shows emphasize kindness, few do so with as much patience, wonder, and generosity extended to its viewers. Little Bear is a curious kid who goes on adventures in the woods around his house that can turn into games or small imagined experiences. He is sometimes with his friends Cat, Duck, Hen, Owl, and Emily, whose personalities, along with Little Bear's, bring about small tensions in their games that ultimately resolve, if not independently, then with the help of Mother Bear or Father Bear, who give each other knowing glances about the expected childhood behaviors. This is the first show that initially taught me to observe things while withholding my judgment, that first step of radical kindness.
12. The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968)
Tumblr media
"The key to happiness is finding joy in the simple things."
One really old and somewhat controversial throwback for my last entry. If you have concerns about a sheriff character representing radical kindness, I would encourage you to start with the third episode of season 3 where Andy, the sheriff in question, has to explain to the new mayor why he doesn't carry a gun and lets prisoners go to gather their crops. There have been some fantastic pieces written about the complexities of this show's bucolic fantasy and Southerners (of all races) attachment to it, but they all acknowledge a type of humanistic and deceptively simple virtue found in Mayberry that audiences long to witness, if not emulate themselves. It's a morality that resists the "hyperactive zealotry" and bureaucracy that the show satirizes through Barney Fife (along with guest characters like the new mayor) and instead emphasizes the understanding that one can have for each individual and the trickstery middle paths that one can find to address conflict.

Seven Sisters In The Sky: Myth and Symbolism of Pleiades
Mythology and Symbolism The Seven Sisters, are beautifully located in the constellation Taurus and they are special for many reasons:
Myth Behind Pleiades In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the seven daughters of the sea-nymph Pleione and Atlas -a Titan who was punished by Zeus to hold up the sky on his shoulders for eternity. Their names were Maia, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope, and Merope. Their name, Pleione means “Ladies of Plenty” from the Greek word pleiôn “plenty.”
According to the myth, they were pursued by Orion, the giant hunter, who was in love with them. To protect the sisters probably from getting raped, Zeus transformed them into stars and placed them in the night sky.
Another tale suggests that the Pleiades were the companions of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, who transformed them into stars to protect them from the advances of Orion, a giant hunter.
Whatever the myth is, the story of the Pleiades constellation is strong a metaphor for the power of sisterhood and the strength that comes from sticking together. Because of its feminine sisterhood energy, the 7 sisters constellation has been associated with fertility and abundance and is often seen as a symbol of prosperity and good luck.
Visibility The Pleiades are one of the most easily visible star clusters in the night sky. They can be seen with the naked eye from almost anywhere on Earth and have been observed and recorded by many different cultures throughout history.
The Pleiades are a relatively young cluster, estimated to be only around 100 million years old and contain over a thousand stars. They are also made up of hot, bright, and massive stars that emit beautiful blue-white light.
The Pleiades have been associated with mythology and symbolism in many different cultures, including Greek, Japanese, and Native American. They are often seen as a symbol of fertility, and abundance. They are often associated with the planting and harvesting of crops, and their appearance in the sky is seen as a sign of prosperity and good fortune.
Daughters of Atlas are a symbol of sisterhood and feminine power. In Hinduism, the Pleiades are associated with the birth of the warrior goddess Durga. Finally, in some Native American cultures, they are seen as the spirits of ancestors who have passed on and are guiding the living through their journey.
In Christianity, this constellation does not hold any significant religious or spiritual meaning. However in Islam, these stars are known as Al-Thurayya and are mentioned in the Quran. They are often associated with guidance and protection, and are believed to have been a source of inspiration for Arabic poets throughout history. The Pleiades are also significant in Islamic astronomy, as they mark the beginning of the Arabic lunar calendar. In traditional Islamic culture, the sighting of the Pleiades after sunset is used to determine the start of the Islamic month of Ramadan.
Astrology In astrology, the Pleiades are considered a significant star cluster and are said to have a powerful influence on human destiny. They are associated with qualities such as intuition, creativity, and psychic ability, and are often used in horoscopes and astrological charts.
Astrologically, the arrival of the Pleiades in the night sky is often considered a sign of spring and has been used to mark the beginning of agricultural seasons.
Witchcraft In witchcraft and Wicca, the seven Pleiades are the source of divine inspiration and guidance. Many witches believe that the stars can bring them closer to the spirit world and help them tap into their own intuition and psychic abilities. Some also believe that the stars can be used for divination and prophecy, and they can help witches connect with their ancestors and spirit guides.
The Pleiades have been seen as a source of divine inspiration and mystical experience. Some spiritual traditions believe that the stars can bring people closer to the spirit world and help them tap into their own intuition and psychic abilities.

Hello ! I'm fairly new to the fandom: a friend of mine advised me to watch the original series before watching the live action (I'm not American and I had never heard about ATLA before that).
So I wasn't there when the fandom seemed to be torn by the ship wars, like two decades ago. I keep seeing Zutara's fans claiming that their ship was the original endgame except that there's no evidence in the show (at least with my "virgin Atla eyes") and all I can see are interviews of the creators/showrunners saying that Kataang was the endgame all along.
I guess my question is this : is there an actual interview of them entertaining the idea of Zutara at the time (even just to shipbait) ? Because I've been in several fandoms where creators/writers would do that just to keep the audience interested (*cough* Riverdale - yeah you can judge me...).
You say that Nickelodeon promoted the ship wars. In what form ?
That was a long ask. Thanks for reading me!
Okay, so here's what you need to know to fully understand that mess: back when the show was first airing, lots of zutara fans had fully convinced themselves that either the story was going to be changed to make their ship canon (because "it's more popular than Kataang") or that Zutara was TOTALLY planned to be the endgame from day one and that's why some many people liked in the first place (because "there's no way this is all in our heads" - spoiler, it was).
And this wasn't a case of fans simply disagreeing on theories about how the show was going to end - lots of people were being AWFUL to each other on fandom spaces, and the behavior was not exclusive to zutara or even just the other non-canon ships. Everyone was calling anyone who disagreed with their takes stupid and bragging ahead of time of how THEIR ship was going to be canon instead. And because the internet was not at all as inescapable as it is today and information was much harder to verify, some people were making "100% legit claims" that their parents or uncle or cousin or whoever worked on Nickelodeon and had fully confirmed Zutara would indeed be a thing.
Nickelodeon, being the shameless corporation that it is, realized that ship wars could mean A LOT of money because people would keep watching if they thought there was any chance of their ship becoming endgame. So, whenever there was an episode in which Zuko and Katara would interact, they made sure to not only include it in the promo for the episode, they'd describe it as "sharing a special moment" or "growing closer" even when that was not what was going to happen in the episode itself. They didn't do that just with Avatar either, and would spend years pulling simmilar things with the hit shows ICarly and Victorious, both of which had ship wars too. In hindsight (and even back then if we simply compare the promos to the episodes) it's obvious that Nick's promos should not have been taken seriously, but Zutara fans latched onto them as "proof" anyway (and some Nick exec laughed all the way to the bank).
But then the finale happened, Kataang and Maiko were endgame, and Zuko and Katara were never even stated to be interested in each other like that. The ship just wasn't a factor in the story - much like Kataang and Maiko fans had said it wouldn't be, because it was obvious what the writers were actually going for.
So, instead of admiting they let their enjoyment of a fanon ship get a little out of hand and that, even though they had every right to like it, it simply never had any chance of being canon and they shouldn't have insisted otherwise when the truth was so clear, they went for a different approach: just double-down on the lie that they had inside knowledge about the show's writting and production, and make up a whole conspiracy about how the lead writer and "true creator" Aaron Ehasz and everybody else had been building up to Zutara from day one, but then Bryan and Michael or "Bryke", the evil showrunners, meddled at the last second and forced them to change everything.
They also claimed there were things like a "deleted" scene in the finale, with Iroh saying Katara would be perfect for Zuko, or with a kiss between the characters, or Katara telling Aang she loved someone else, ya know, all kinds of copes. Nickelodeon made it worse by airing some "fun production facts" during re-runs, plenty of which were obviously fake - but one mentioned "Zuko was going to be Katara's original love interest" so plenty of people were willing to pretend it was all 100% legitimate. And the icing on the cake was an "interview" in which Ehasz supposedly confirmed all of the conspiracies, "proving" zutara fans had always been right about everything and it's the Kataang and Maiko fans that were lying to themselves.
Unfortunatelly for these people, pretty much EVERYONE has a social media presence nowadays, and it's really easy to not only get in contact with writers and producers of the shows we like, but to also PROVE that what you're telling everyone is indeed what that person said.
And there's tons of videos and screenshots of everyone involved in writting and producing the show saying, including the ones that like Zutara, saying KATAANG was the planned endgame from the start, and Aaron Ehasz has repeatedly said that the supposed "interview" in which he validates the zutara endgame conspiracy and "calls out" Bryke is completely fake, and he's happy MAI got to live happily ever after with Zuko.
Finally, we got access to "the series bible", aka the original plans for the show, and we got to see everything that was cut or changed: Uncle Iroh was originally going to be a twist villain that would betray Zuko, Azula was still going to be a prodigy and Ozai's favorite child but she'd be Zuko's older brother instead of his younger sister, and there was a cut love triangle between Aang, Katara... and TOPH, who was going to be a super buff dude, much like we see in Ember Island Players and in the opening sequence of every episode because yes, they had already designed that character AND started book 1 when decided "Wouldn't a blind girl that looks delicate but can wreck people's shit be more interesting than this generic guy?"
But even now that disproving this Zutara endgame conspiracy is easier than ever because we can just ask the people who made the show, some people continue insisting that all these writers and producers, again some of which DO like Zutara, are lying for no reason - or because "Bryke is forcing them to hide it all."
They're just desperately trying to save face and pretend that they didn't spend over a decade lying to themselves and their buddies, and sometimes using this conspiracy to justify bullying, threatening and doxxing people.
It's VERY sad.

atla fics i want to write but in a future investigative journalist kinda way/vibe; some potential ideas:
The Boiling Rock idea 1: a journalist goes to the Boiling Rock Prison, now at the centre of controversy as reports come to light for the first time detailing the horrific abuse endured by prisoners during the war.
The Boiling Rock idea 2: a journalist investigates the rumours that Fire Lord Zuko and Ambassador Sokka broke in, and out of the Fire Nation's most notorious prison, expecting it not to come to fruition, and instead, uncovering one of the most insane stories of the year.
Pentapox: a journalist investigates a mysterious outbreak of the so-called "pentapox" disease that broke out towards the end of the war in the then Fire Nation-occupied city of Omashu, in which a highly documented disease resulted in the release of dozens of Earth Kingdom citizens from the city to stop the spread, despite there being no record of any similar disease then or since.
Azulon, Ursa and Ozai: a journalist decides to take the plunge and investigate the suspicious and frankly disturbing timeline of events that lead to Fire Lord Ozai taking the throne. Through a series of harrowing interviews with previous servants, political experts and even a special interview with the Fire Lord himself, they learn their suspicions of murder and violence were tame compared to the truth.
Ba Sing Se's missing women: a journalist delves into the bizarre series of disappearances of Ba Sing Se women in the final decade of the war and the state secrets that surround it (i.e., all the women the Dai Li brainwashed were people, and there's no way there wasn't some scary as fuck rumours about the Dai Li kidnapping women and then seeing them again, except they no longer have any idea who their loved ones are)
The Blue Spirit: A journalist looks into the bizarre crimes of a masked vigilante who robbed both the rich and the poor, freed the Avatar, and ended their story in the Ba Sing Se catacombs. The story leaves everyone with a lot of questions, and very few answers.
The Boy in the Iceberg: a journalist decides to delve into the truth of what happened to Avatar Aang in between the time he went missing and 100 years later. Through incredible exclusive interviews with Chief Katara and Ambassador Sokka, they learn about the events that led to Aang being discovered, and what it meant to leave their home behind to save the world.
The Freedom Fighters: A journalist and their journey tracking down one of the most well-known resistance groups in the later half of the war as they learn the fate of it's leader and the terrible cost of war on the children that were pushed into fighting.

something interesting that popped into my head re: maiden talk. objectively between winter, weiss, and jaune, winter is the one most committed to atlas the nation; her line to ironwood, "I have never wavered in fighting the enemies of this kingdom, and I won't start now" has always stood out to me and I find it... interesting. Winter has the winter maiden powers and is probably the most high-ranking Atlas official to survive the fall. Raven, in committing to her tribe, places herself squarely in Mistral. Cinder steals Amber's powers in Vale, a country historically against Atlas (notably in the Great War), therefore aligning with her own sentiments. I doubt there is actually anything to this, but it feels like more reason to believe the Summer maiden will be in and associated with Vacuo. also as I rewatch the ironwood fight, he says that he never expected Winter to betray him... I have to wonder if he groomed Winter into joining the Atlesian military, or planted the seed in her mind, thinking that if he could mold someone into the lieutenant he needed that he'd never have to worry because he would have been totally responsible for them. (as in, taught them everything and shaped their morals and scruples). we know that as head of atlas he is the headmaster of the atlas academy but what better way to make sure that your protege never gets any "ideas" by picking someone who is isolated and desperate to escape, who wants to be cared for and about by someone and especially someone like him? if they never go to the academy they won't have the distraction of "friends" and "teams" and "allegiances." this could in part explain why her sword and rapier (?) are like ironwood's bfg and due process- she modelled them after him. also of course must be mentioned that when James realized Winter had inherited the maiden powers, he says that the destiny he chose for her had arrived. he must have known that it means penny is dead, but that doesn't matter to him at all. i think that's part of why winter is so pissed when she says "you chose nothing. this was a gift." she has to grieve her friend and a man who stands before her claiming he feels betrayed doesn't even seem surprised or sad about the death.
…hm yeah. throws that on the "gillian asturias is the summer maiden" pile
the WOR episode on huntsmen implies this pretty overtly, as ozpin notes that atlas academy has been under increasing scrutiny for "indoctrinating" its students into the military and pressuring graduates to enlist as special operatives, and…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ironwood also personally invites weiss to enroll at atlas in V4, and he knows jacques personally--prior to the fall of beacon it's implied they were political allies even, so he certainly knows what kind of person jacques is and how he treats his children. and then the way he talks to the kids when he gives them their licenses in V7 implies an expectation of personal loyalty--he needs huntsmen he can trust at his side.
i think he probably saw it as himself opening doors and taking a personal interest in promising students, much as ozpin does--bc ironwood very much does view himself as ozpin's most important lieutenant and natural successor, based on his unilateral actions after the fall--without necessarily recognizing (or caring) how manipulative and exploitative this sort of behavior is. but 100%, absolutely he was surprised by winter's "betrayal" because he thought she was his perfect protégé, never realizing she could still think for herself.
the funny thing is, projecting absolute obedience and deference while keeping her true thoughts and feelings behind a faultless mask is almost certainly a survival skill winter learned to protect herself from jacques, and she slips seamlessly into doing that the instant ironwood begins to make choices she disagrees with.
ditto her decisions in V8: winter sees ironwood murder a councilman in cold blood, going past "martial law" all the way to "military coup," and she sees the ace-ops brace up and fall in line. so what does she do? quietly stays put and starts doing what she can to sabotage him. she lets JYR go, then--upon realizing that they must have been the ones to blow up the whale, and thus probably survived--immediately turns around and declares they're going back to ironwood, no searching for the hostages, they'll tell him something else blew up the whale in person. jumping in to "arrest" marrow before ironwood shot him wasn't the moment winter "came to her senses"--that happened when she saw ironwood shoot sleet. it was just the moment when she saw she could do more good by leaving than by staying to mitigate ironwood's excesses. & i would bet anything that is exactly how winter was with her siblings when they were children: appeasing jacques and presenting as the perfect obedient child, and using the relative freedom that gave her to make things easier for her siblings in small, quiet ways.
ironwood just never noticed that he'd burned through all of winter's trust and all the chances she was willing to give him.
as for his reaction to penny's death: another moment i think about fucking constantly is this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the way her focus goes right to penny's sword. the pause before she responds "sir?" to ironwood's greeting because she's so caught up in her worry for penny. (watts being… watts, and silently gloating at her because he can tell how bothered she is. framed between ironwood and harriet, who don't see penny as anything but a weapon to get under control.)
there's a reason winter is such a storm of feelings when she lets JYR go to try to save their friend, and the reason is she's terrified and angry and disgusted by whatever ironwood did to penny while she was being fitted into that brace, unable to intervene or protest.
so a day later, when penny dies and ironwood shrugs? it's not just that he's indifferent. ironwood is directly responsible for penny's death--he made the devil's bargain with watts, he authorized that virus, he is the reason penny was forced to leave her robotic body behind, he made penny vulnerable to cinder--and winter knows that.

Why I think a new Avatar can be a mistake
I just saw the news of a new Avatar Series following up the next avatar after Korra and I know, this may seem just me being a Korra widow but I have arguments
1. Nobody wanted this. Okay, some people wanted, but between Adult Gaang, more Korra stuff, Kyoshi Novels being adapt, a new Avatar in ancient time (like, the avatar right after Wan)...a new Avatar right after Korra was not even on the top 3 wishes of the fandom
2. Korra ended so in such a spectacular fashion, just like Aang that the new series have to be at the very least equal to what the predecessor did which is not easy at all.
Also, the technology in tlok worked so well because it brought a a whole new world for Avatar and their steampunk aesthetics was on point. So what they're gonna do next? Like, they already have mind control machines. It doesn't matter if Korra dies 10 or 40 or even 100 years after the finale of her show, the technology will evolve faster and can be a problem especially because I don't think many fans would enjoy see the Avatar making selfies and posting on Instagram.
3. What new they gonna bring to the Avatarverse? Both atla and tlok already hits on topics like emotional and physical abuse, trauma, war, genocide, torture, murder, suicide, lgbt representation, feminism, diversity as a whole ... All of that in more than one way. So, what they are gonna add to the Avatarverse that already haven't be done?
There's 10.000 years of Avatar World history that we have no ideia about it, the changes. Between a history that happens in, I don't know ...just a few years before Yangcheen time will be more different to what we already know than a history just a few years after Korra.
4. For this new series to work they have to: Bring something new, make charismatic characters, don't be repetitive, the animation have to be top of it's game, the history have to be good and it have to make a impact.
It can't be done just because of the hype.
Like I've said before, Im more scared of wherever it comes from Avatar Studios than what will come from the live action simply because what Avatar Studios will make will be canon and can potentially mess up everything good, remarkable and special about your dearest show.

Because @grollow keeps bullying mE. Here are 2 old pieces of art- Its Reed Nightshade and Atlas! The nightmare moff family everyone seems to love featured in grollow’s fic Red Sky! Reed is your local Seer and trombonist/general musician. He loves causing chaos and being an absolute little shit when it suits him. He’s fiercely loyal, kind beneath all that sass and sarcasm, and loves his family above all else. though he is not above shoving a tennis ball into the bell of his trombone to shoot at grimm- Nightshade Is the troupe’s Tattoo artist and specializes in many a fine skill from piercings, magic imbued tattoos, and sigils. She’s a lot like reed in that she’s a chaotic hooligan with a heart of gold. though she also has the sharpest wit and will sass you to the ends of the earth. She loves her family to bits and would stab a bitch for them. especially her sister Alula Atlas....Atlas is a grouch. He’s stubborn, cynical, rough around the edges and 100% ass to the hole. but he cares in his own way and will move heaven and earth for those he loves. pun intended ;3c. (nightshade does have both wings one is just not pictured here for the sake of atlas being seen lmao)

What if ATLA had 6 seasons, the War trilogy (books 1-3) and the Post-War trilogy (Books 4-6)?
Well, we do know that Eshaz did have plans for at least a Book 4 that got scrubbed. Some of the plans apparently were translated for the comics, so we do know at least some idea of how a post-war trilogy would start.
Course the execution left a lot to be desired.
As for how I feel such a story would go, it would be...a lot more complicated than what we got in the War Trilogy. Back then it was all about stopping the Fire Lord. Now the Gaang needs to begin the painful task of actually reconstructing a world torn by war. As Zuko said it himself, it's not gonna be easy. Particularly if one nation has been raised to effectively wage war on everyone else.
This brings me to my first point: I believe the Fire Nation should still take on an antagonistic role. Again, they were the one who waged a brutal war of conquest so they're gonna be the ones who would be the biggest obstacle to peace. Not in a "we're gonna restart the whole war" way, but more digging in their heels and resisting any attempts at reparations or insisting they didn't do anything wrong. Which makes sense. This was a people indoctrinated into believing their war was just, that they were the "march of progress" so it were. Trying to deescalate from that is an uphill battle given that there's 100 years of fanaticism and militarism they need to roll back.
This brings me to my next point: probably the biggest reason I can see why the Fire Nation would be so resistant to change is the death toll. Given how prevalent the war was on every level of society, somebody was bound to have somebody who lost their lives to the war. And now they're being told that their deaths were in the service for something evil or lesser. They lost, and thus the shame and deaths were all for nothing.
ALL Fire Nation character will have to deal with this. Zuko (let's not forget he was part of that system too). Mai. Ty Lee. Iroh. And most importantly...
Tumblr media
Yeah. Azula. I've talked about her before in length, but I think she'd be the key of this whole post-war trilogy. Remember, she was one of the most ardent supporters of the war being Ozai's golden child. And she lost everything in the process. I feel that she'd be the best character to help emphasize the painful process this deradicalization would bring. That it's not going to be easy, and more often than not, it's going to hurt.
Course...there's always hope.
It's made clear time and again that the Fire Nation is NOT inherently evil at birth. While their society supports cruelty and warmongering, that doesn't mean the people who lived under such a system are condemned. Zuko was the first step towards reformation, but he's only one guy. Now the whole society, made up of people who hadn't seen the things he had, needs to make the same transition. Now personally, I feel this arc was botched in the comics.
But that doesn't mean such an arc being the core of the Post-War Trilogy can be something truly special. You don't even need an overarching villain. Just people who ultimately need to be shown the way because they don't know any better.
And...speaking as someone who grew up in post 9/11 America, people who learn to leave behind their violent past and forge a new destiny can be important to so many of us.
