in a way that was... probably unintentional (? if anyone has proof otherwise, hit me up), I see tnba's episode "growing pains" as the spiritual adaptation of "the diplomat's son".
in it timmy todd find and saves a girl he later calls "annie" from a band of bikers who were hounding her (so there's an element of sexual violence there, albeit much more child-friendly than what garzonas does to gloria). she has no memories and is escaping from someone that she doesn't remember, who later appears in the episode as seemingly an abusive father. in the end it's revealed that it's clayface, and that annie was a "piece" of him that got away. to save robin, she throws herself at clayface and is absorved by him.
like jason in the comic, timmy bonds with this girl, here with signs of a boyhood crush. he gets really, personally involved with her plight -in the episode, tim even voices that he gets what she's going through because his father was "no prize". he tries so hard to save this girl, and it's all futile in the end. albeit in different ways, both gloria and annie commit suicide, and annie's deaths prompts him to lash out at clayface, even attacking him on a balaustrade inside a factory that propitiates a fall (this is the one element that makes me wonder if it might've been an intentional sneak-adaptation lol, as opposed to the obvious one in "never fear").
the end result is bruce telling timmy todd that sometimes there are no happy endings, as if he doesn't already know. timmy is visibly disappointed with the system, when he overhears the cops saying they'll charge clayface with robbery and breaking and entering, and he tells bruce that they should charge him with murder (clayface gets away with his crime, the way garzonas would have). timmy walks away from bruce, calm and without such an obvious rift between them, because the episode is just not interested in that part of "the diplomat's son", which in the original was very much the point.
there are other differences. the episode focuses on timmy in the way the comic did NOT focus on jason, letting us see how much he cares for what this girl is going through, and for what other people he sees himself in go through (we see him look with compassion and heartache at homeless families and children along his way to find annie). he rebels against bruce more openly, refusing to follow his orders and stating clearly that he'll look for annie instead of sneaking around (bruce secretly has a tracker on him, so this might just be a case of perceived agency lol). whether timmy had murderous intent in a moment of rage is never really shown, or considered important.
the story is less pointed, it doesn't have an agenda of eventually undermining timmy's character and as such is, as usual, far more sympathetic towards him. and in a way, is less impactful than the comic for it, where no punches were pulled and, regardless of intent, jason came accross as all the more vivid a character. this episode is just one more in timmy todd's journey, but I'd say everyone who knows about post-crisis!jason knows about garzonas.

WIP Whenever
Tagged again by @shivunin and @daggerbeanart, thank you very much! I'm on holiday right now, so I'm a little bit slow and working traditionally but...
Tumblr media
I found an Art Nouveau piece and thought that oh look that's Radha. And redrawn it on my sketchbook. And coloured it with watercolours. I have... A love/hate relationship with watercolours, but I haven't brought any markers with me this year to force myself to use them more. And since it's been a while since I've been wanting to do a couple set in Art Nouveau style with her and Aisling... Here. Your muse of Writing and History, Prophet's Laurel all around and PURPLE. The paper is blotchy and not the right one, don't mind that, OOPS.
DadWolf going on, page 5. This page has been... Something that picked me a little off the ground. I'll speak about it more when it won't come out as terribly sad and sappy. I'm looking at those bookshelves and shivering at the idea of colouring them, for now.
Not Dragon Age related, and I'll hope you'll forgive me... But yeah. I am a sucker for trash movies, and John Wick is... It's a trash movie with a lot of money and Keanu Reeves and I love the saga. The sketch on the left was drawn... I think in 2017 when I first saw the first movie and snickered a lot because in Russian he's nicknamed "Baba Yaga"... Which isn't really the boogeyman. It's an old witch that lives in the woods in Slavic folklore, in a tiny hut with chicken legs. And travels on a cauldron. I kept the chicken legs as a reference to the hut. But well I fount the sketch and thought to redraw it. Adding the dog because the dog is VERY important.
Writing-wise I'm a little slow at the moment, but here's a piece from Monster Fic that I don't know if I'll keep. The night right after the Arbor Wilds, Aisling got back, managed to quarrel awfully with Cassandra AND Cullen. Everyone is miserable.

Abelas told her she shouldn’t really roam on her own in the Temple, particularly at night. The complex was built on the side of a cliff that opened on more forest down below, with gentle hills and mountains in the background facing west. In some places, where balconies had been long ago, the balaustrade had long fallen, leaving just openings on nothing: the incautious visitor could all too easily fall to their death.
But she was left with very little to do, after unloading Little Brother and setting up a camp in the big atrium for them… Four. Because it ended up that one of the Templars gave in for good, and didn’t really feel like going out. Not with the whole of the Inquisition army ready to jump on him. No one there could really disagree, and since the man -George, a burly man in his fourties, with a ruddy face that spoke of many laughters and evenings spent drinking with friends and eyes that still sparkled even if they were heavily rimmed in red- had been so quick in lowering his sword and yielding…
Aisling had given him one of the cots that were packed on her horse, insisted when he tried to say that no, that was hers, and just… Curled around her saddle, using it as a pillow and rolling herself in a blanket side by side with Radha, and allowed herself to cry.
Except, no tears came forth.
She was grateful of being there, and opening her eyes, looking at remnants of a past long gone, something that every First would have killed to find. Something that poor Taven actually died to find. It’s huge, it’s been kept in wondrous state… And it’s inhabited. It’s inhabited, and she has the way to ask to her heart’s content.
And yet, all she can think of is that the Herald of Andraste would be up in a camp on the top of a hill, after a round of greetings and congratulations with the Empress, the Marquise of the Dales and all the nobles they rallied to the help. After that, she would have pretended to retire in her tent and slipped right out to slowly reach and sneak in the Commander’s one, and sleep curled against his warm frame, caressed by hands that were always cold, held and safe and loved.
And yet, she’s just Aisling, a Dalish mage that touched the wrong artifact and now has gained a unique ability, the mask has been left in her tent up the hill, and she feels giddy from both the sensation of having stood up for herself and the idea of all that she wants to ask to the elves there and explore and learn there. At the same time, tho, the giddiness is chased around by regret, the slimy feeling of being ignoring responsibilities, that she should be up there and doing her job, that she let everyone down. Nobody who stopped in the Temple was happy: Radha is angry because Morrigan drank from the Well, and both Aisling and Solas stopped her when Aisling turned down the chance. Solas is in one of his moods and hurt from Radha being angry.
Her heart beats too fast, her thoughts are too quick: she knows she won’t be sleeping any time soon, unless she does something. So, she lets go of the saddle, quietly slips out of the blanket and leaves on tip-toes, bringing the blanket with her and careful not to wake her sister up.
She saw the old balcony on her way to the baths, and even if there’s no more an old elven guide and the corridors are dark, she can find her way back with ease. The moon is shining up above between the canopies, and the corridors are large, easy to follow. She could maybe activate the magical lanterns that glows very dimly hanging from the ceilings, but on a second thought, she doesn’t know where the other elves sleep, here, and she doesn’t want to risk waking someone up and having to explain why exactly she’s walking around on her own. “I miss my boyfriend, but he believes I am the elven tool of the big plan of a deity I don’t believe in and so I can’t sleep” sounds too pitiful, and who knows whether they’ll approve of her being with a human.
She takes a couple of wrong turns, confused in the darkness, but in the end she finds the place she was looking for. The old pavement is broken, but bathed in moonlight, and even with the plenilune the stars are still shining, more than she can count. It’s beautiful and it’s terribly lonely, and Aisling wonders who was the last person that leaned into that balcony to see stars and enjoy the view. How many centuries passed, what were they thinking.
She curls in a corner, draping the blanket around her shoulders as she leans over the wall. One leg gets bent under the opposite knee, the other foot dwindling in the void. There’s a waterfall roaring nearby, an owl screeches somewhere in the distance, and a choir of crickets are there to lull her to sleep. The breeze is chilly, in spite of the day having been hot enough. It’s a perfect summer evening, and the stars are twinkling and she is not pretending anymore to be someone she isn’t, and she is alone.
Tears stars to fall, because she is not pretending to be someone or something that she isn’t, and the result is that she is alone. And Mythal, it feels like emerging from underwater, but keeping her breath has been so good and warm that she really thinks she could stay underwater forever.
It’s just tiredness making her think that way, she knows -she knows herself well-, the hour is very late and the day has been incredibly long, the choice she had to make a hard one, and one she doesn’t think was the right one. It’s everything, and it’s nothing, and she will feel a little better in the morning.
She lets the crickets and the owl lull her to sleep.

Danse de lune
The moon glistened, splendid, full and ghostly as we danced on the balcony, the balaustrade the only thing saving us from falling into the abyss. I drank from the lightness and fluidity of his movements as if he was the last drop of water in the desert. Our hairs and limbs intertwined in the wind to the sound of an imaginary melody.
I breathed in the scent of his breath as he poured it onto my mouth before kissing me. And suddenly, the world stopped around me. Time and space became distant, almost inconceivable concepts, as soon as our lips met, and I felt like I could be united with him for as long as my body remained whole.
When he backed away, I felt the impulse to join him again, even at the cost of my own breath, but I froze as I saw the silver moon bathing in his pupils. When he smiled, I felt as though the shy sun was pouring its light into my veins, and it flew through me, past me.
"I'm a terrible dancer," I mumbled under my breath. He stroked my cheek with his fingertips and blinked slowly, his long blond lashes fluttering like petals. He let out a soft, angelic chuckle.
“Yes, you are."

Mini set rant
I want to preface this with the fact that I loved Shadow and Bone  - I’ve already binged it an am going to start my rewatch in the next few days.
But...
I thought it was kind of visually disappointing in a few places? The books are super visual and some of the scenes feel practically made for a visual medium like tv/film- and it was these scenes I felt really missed out. I get they were limited due to the situations of filming, but this is just my take on what I would have liked to see? (and hope they get more budget/freedom to do next series)
First off the domed hall/ Grisha dining room
This is supposed to be the school for all grisha, the home base for the entire second army and it just felt... really small
Tumblr media
Now this doesn’t feel like an army
Tumblr media
along each side we can see 6, 7 and 4
Tumblr media
Seems about 12-14 on each side making the capacity like 36-42 total plus the darkling.
Compare it to say hogwarts in Harry potter (another school for magic small science users)
Tumblr media
Or to compare to another Netflix Property- The Witcher and Queen Calanthe’s feast hall
Tumblr media
The next location is the Grand palace. This place is supposed to be the embodiment of everything wrong with the Lantsov’s - a dynasty at its breaking point - so think like Winter Palace and the Romanov’s or Versailles and the French kings.
A film I think really does the excess aesthetic really well is Disney’s Cinderella 2015
Tumblr media
Like look at how insane and over the top everything is
Now I get not everyone has Disney budget, so look at what they did do.
First the Throne room, here is the show’s version:
Tumblr media
And here is the description in the book :
as we moved through a spacious entryhall into a long corridor lined with mirrors and ornamented in gold I thought how different this place was from the Little Palace. Everywhere I looked I saw marble and gold, soaring walls of white and palest blue, gleaming chandaliers, liveried footmen, polished parquet floors laid out in elaborate geometric designs. It wasn't without beauty but there was something exhausting about the extravagance of it all... as we walked by a tree of jade embellished with diamond leaves... the throne room was three stories high, every window sparkling with gold double eagles. A long pale blue carpet ran the length of the room, where the members of the court milled about the raised throne.... (shadow and bone ch7)
First off the lack of pale blue - like it’s a basic thing
Second it seems quite subdued. Like the grand-palace is supposed to be gaudy and rococoo and mad- like the royal family
The Lantsov’s are very heavily based on the Romanov’s so for reference here is the ‘small’ throne room in the Winter Palace, St Petersburgh
Tumblr media
and here is the Grand throne room (also called the Apollo room)
Tumblr media
It just seems kinda plain here.
Finally we have the winter Fete- now for some reason it’s been moved to just take place in the Little Palace- when it is described in the books as this
'music floated down the marble hallways, the air felt curiously warm  and was perfumed with the scent of thousand of white flowers grown in grisha hothouses. They covered tables and trailed down balaustrades in thick clusters... the ballroom was larger and grander than even the throne room had been. Lit by row after row of sparkling chandeliers and full of masses of people drinking and dancing to the sounds of a masked orchestra seated along the far wall...the crystals dripping from the chandeliers even the floor beneath our feet seemed to sparkle...
'until we made our way behind the stage that had been set up along the far wall of the ballroom... to introduce the grisha. the orchestra struck a dramatic chords and the guests were soon gasping as the inferni sent archs of flames shooting over the crowd and squallers sent spires of glitter whirling about the room. They were joined by a large group of tidemakers who with the squallers help bought a massive wave crashing over the balcony to hover inches about the audience's heads. I saw hands reach up to touch the shining sheet of water. Then the inferni raised their hands and with a hiss the water disappeared into a swirling mass of mist.  hidden by the side of the stage, I had a sudden inspiration and sent light cascading through the mist , creating a rainbow that shimmered briefly in the air... and he led me to base of the steps at the base of the platform... the queen surrounded by her ladies looking bored...
Do you get my point about how visual this is?
Now if we want a ballroom you could go for something like this:
Tumblr media
(great gallery at Schonbrunn palace- not too far from Budapest in Vienna, Austria )
If you want a theatre you can go for this:
Tumblr media
The Hungarian state Opera House
Instead we go for a stripped back performance in the Little Palace instead- whatever fine
It looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is quite nice- except it looks more ornate than the Grand Palace
The Queen even has a line in the show about how quaint it is supposed to be- yet it outshines her palace. The Darkling and the Royal Family approach power in fundamentally different ways, and it makes no thematic sense for his palace to be more elaborate than theirs.
Finally the actual display...
Tumblr media
Is it just me or did this whole thing feel kind of cramped? - especially when the Inferni were performing (they literally looked like they were standing on chairs
Again - this is a nitpick- but I do love the visual elements of the books and just feel like some of the themes get a bit lost with these slightly odd changes

Udine (Friuli). Piazza XX Settembre. Historical square of Udine, valued, but abandoned by the citizens themselves, remains on the edge of the historic center. The market is currently held there. The square is connected to the ups and downs of Della Torre family, enemies of the Venetian Republic, condemned for their counter-power to the demolition of their palace, in the eighteenth century, then rehabilitated by the French revolutionaries. The square became public in 1868 and was used as a grain market (Plàzze dai Grans). From ancient times resists the balaustrade ("vera") of the well of the Confraternity of S. Maria dei Battuti. The Venetian palace (Gothic style) is actually a construction of 1929, which retains some decorative element of previous demolitions. #history #travel #traveling #vacation #visiting #instatravel #instago #instagood #holiday #travelling #tourism #instatraveling #igtravel #plàzzedaigrans #mytravelgram #travelgram #massimopistis #sovVERSIvi #ilmiolibro #udine #igersudine #marketplace #stories #dellatorre #friuli #tourist #travelingram #balaustrade #santamariadeibattuti #venetianpalace

Orense Arquitectos creates closed facade for Mocoli House in Ecuador
Opaque concrete walls and wooden lattices enclose a family house on an island in Guayaquil designed by Ecuadorian practice Orense Arquitectos to feel tranquil and secluded.
Mocoli House is located on Isla Mocolí, a small island n the town of Samborondón, in the metropolitan region of Guayaquil.
Mocoli House has a concrete and teak facade
Designed by local firm Orense Arquitectos, the 460-square-metre residence is meant to provide privacy and relief from the tensions of day-to-day life.
"The owners understood that their home had to be a space with privacy, lucidity and harmony," said the studio.
Glimpses of the entry courtyard seen from the street
U-shaped in plan, the two-storey house sits on a flat, rectangular site.
Facades consist of exposed concrete, white stucco and warm-toned teak wood. The street-facing walls lack windows, giving the home an inward-facing quality.
A raised path crosses a pool to reach the front door
The entrance elevation, which looks north, is formed of two layers. The outer portion has a tall, concrete wall that shields a void behind it. This open area, which is exposed to the sky, holds a double-height courtyard and an upper-level balcony.
"The double facade absorbs you and achieves its protective function of blocking direct solar light and exterior distractions," said Orense Arquitectos.
A balcony overlooks the courtyard
Designed to evoke a cave, the entry courtyard has a pathway that crosses over a reflecting pool. The cave-like atmosphere continues as one enters the house but soon gives way to spaces that feel bright and lofty.
"The light receives you while you advance through a reduced area in the beginning, but it begins to amplify while you travel through the hall until you reach the social area," the firm said.
The staircase has glass balaustrades
At ground level, there is a kitchen, dining area, living room, TV room and bar, along with service quarters. Stretches of glass look upon the landscaped spaces surrounding the enclosed residence.
A white stair with glass railings – envisioned as a "well-placed sculpture" – leads to the upper level. A skylit corridor connects a series of bedrooms, while also serving as a place to display artwork.
The master bedroom has a terrace overlooking the courtyard
Bedrooms are decorated all in white so they can be customised to the taste of each occupant. Softened daylight enters the sleeping areas through an exterior lattice made of teak wood.
Just off the master suite is the terrace that occupies the void behind the entrance facade.
Interior walls are painted white
Located near the Pacific Ocean, Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador, with over two million inhabitants.
Other projects there include a house by Felipe Assadi that consists of gabled, brick volume arranged around a courtyard, and a dwelling by Jannina Cabal that features a tactile material palette and floor-to-ceiling glazing.
Photography is by JAG Studio.
