I finished The Angel of Indian Lake recently and there were so many feelings. I was originally just going to say a couple of things and it got away from me so I just did it this way. If you want to read my rambling, cool, if not, long story short: Stephen Graham Jones is fucking awesome, Jade Daniels is 100% my Final Girl of all final girls, and the Indian Lake Trilogy is such a good read on so many levels so everyone should read it.
There is an amazing amount of depth and heart to it that you just don't usually see in horror fiction and on top of that, the trilogy starts out as a total love letter to 80s slashers and final girls, with the real surprise being the protagonist, half-Blackfeet and full outcast Jade Daniels, the rebel girl who is always in trouble for something and has memorized everything about every slasher film (up to that point) while praying for a real slasher to hit her town of Proofrock, Idaho, but be careful what you wish for, right? Love her!! Lots of subplot about the colonization and takeover of Native lands, as SGJ is a Native American writer and that figures into his work. So much depth. Anyway, did I say this was the short version??? Just read the books! 😂🔪🖤🫀🩸

I’ve been thinking about improv comedy lately, per a few discussions I’ve had on discord and twitter.
I want to give a hearty rec for Paul F Tompkin’s show The Dead Author’s Podcast. PF Tompkins plays HG Wells who hops into his time machine and interview the dead authors of interest.
There's 66 episodes total, including an ep that features Dr. Seuss and another Shel Silverstein. Maya Angelou. Christopher Marlowe. Each author is played by one of the comedians from the Upright Citizens Brigade and I’m always howling with laughter at something or other during an episode.
It’s such a fun kind of improv comedy, running amok with historical details and other silly things. One of my favorite episodes is the Gospel writers which had me in stitches. The Ayn Rand episode had me weeping with laughter and sobbing in nihilism.
I was looking back at their archive and it turns out there's a few episodes I'd missed over the years so I'll be picking my way through these again. It's such a fun ride.
Pretty sure they have their episodes up on Spotify, Stitcher and Apple and all the other usual podcast places. The Dead Author’s Podcast is their official page (not mobile friendly, the banners have broken the page).
Definitely check it out if you enjoy improv comedy and/or historical silliness.

September 13: Jade/Letha/Banner (1?)
Indian Lake Trilogy, canon-complaint through Reaper with one obvious difference. I really wanted to write a threesome, is the thing. But that's not what this is.
~780 words, 30 minutes
*
This time, when Jade's released from prison, it's Banner who picks her up outside the gates and then insists on taking her home. He means his home but says it like it's hers too, which is of course a lie. She puts up a fight about it that's more than token resistance but not much. He answers like he's tired and maybe a little bored, like he'll break soon just to get her to shut up, except that he doesn't stop answering, doesn't stop, doesn't stop, doesn't stop, until they're back in Proofrock again, and then she lapses into silence and pretends this isn't letting him win.
In his new truck that looks a lot like the old one, except the headlights aren't smashed in and the color's a bright alarm red instead of black, he takes her down Main Street, silent, watching her out of the corner of his eye. She can feel it. Maybe after tangoing with two killers—hell, more than two, but two massacres, two horror shows—she's just got an extra sense for a pair of eyes trying to drill into the side of her skull, with the same intensity of an actual bone-shattering power tool. Or maybe it's just him. Some sort of bond they’ve got or something.
"Are you a real deputy now?" she asks, to make conversation when they roll on past the dollar store.
"I'm the whole damn department," he answers. Then: "Me and Meg."
It's not snowing this time but it's not spring either: the second week of February, frigid blue-cold with a knife-like wind and that same old snow perma-frosted to the ground. When that wind picks up it blows snowflakes wafting over the crystalline, clear snow mounds, the ones that were probably sparkling in this morning's sun. Now it's early dusk and only bruises of purple shadow shade on down the sides of them.
The Tompkins house looks like it always did on the outside, must have been transformed on the inside, because the decor is all Mondragon. Like they've split the property right down the middle. He maintains the outside; she transforms the in. Most of the rooms are dark, feel like they're shrouded. Jade makes out the details of the front hallway, the living room, the kitchen as she glimpses it through a doorway. The living room's the easiest because they linger there a while and because one of the lights is actually on, sending out ever-fading circles of concentric yellow-white. A girl—Gal, must be, because she looks about the right age and somewhat familiar—is sitting at the edge of the couch, in the brightest part of the spotlight, holding Adrienne asleep in her arms.
She turns her head around halfway, half-upside down, doesn't move otherwise, exchanges information with Banner in low tones while Jade stands awkwardly in the worst light and tries to take the place in.
There's got to be some kind of metaphor here, about where the light touches and where it does not.
She tries to center it, herself, tries to find the start of this thread. First dials back to last December and then even further, further. Goes too far and comes back and then wavers and settles on the exact, precise, specific moment when she first saw Letha: the girls’ bathroom, Henderson High, senior year. When she knew the most important piece of the narrative puzzle was clicking right into place. There's a skip in the tape here. A bug, where the audio cuts and the video stripes over with static—maybe it's more like a DVD with a scratch on it and it just repeat and repeats and repeats. The bathroom stall door swinging open and Letha stepping through.
And again.
And again.
And again.
The only thing Jade had really wanted to know, what she'd kept on harping about to her lawyer, since she was going back to prison and there wasn't any way around that, was is Letha okay?
Fast forward the tape through all the gory parts—you've seen them all anyway, the fake stuff and the real, and the blood and guts aren't the core of the story anymore, never were—and what you've got is this. Jade, orphaned, untethered in the middle of a not-quite-familiar living room, her hands deep in the pockets of the coat she hasn't taken off. The living room isn't home but there are other living rooms, other houses, that are farther still from the ideal. She's gotten her second get out of jail free card. There aren't any left. Letha is somewhere upstairs, out of the hospital, home, and Banner says she's been waiting impatiently just to see Jade again.

Crimson (Engaged Part 8)
Pairing: Stucky x You
Summary: You were told to not engage unless necessary because you were in fact dead, or at least that’s what the death certificate said.
Song inspiration: Maggie Rogers “light On”; Florence + the Machine “Long & Lost”;  Mumford and Sons “Tompkins Square Park”; LEON “Dreams”
Tumblr media
She felt it. The blade ripped through skin, through organs, as she had taken the step in front of Bucky. She hadn’t hesitated, just acted. The gasp escaped her lips, as she felt the piercing pain. “Hail Hydra,” the goon exclaimed, before being on the receiving end of a bullet from Bucky’s gun.
“Y/n,” she heard Steve call.
She crumpled to the ground, her hands going to the knife embedded in her, pulling it out. She bit her lip, keeping her from screaming. The knife fell from her hands as she grasped her stomach, her thoughts going a mile a minute. She looked down. Crimson. “That’s a lot of blood,” she mumbled as her black tac gear became spotted.
She felt strong hands cover her hands. “I got you,” was whispered in her ear.
“I love you,” she muttered as she felt her body hemorrhage. “Love you both.”
Her eyes scanned the blackboard. She could scream. What was she missing? What had Hydra fucked up in Bucky’s serum? She closed her eyes. She was drained. Forty-eight hours in the lab and she was no closer.
She and Banner were back at square one. Erskine’s formula was on a blackboard to the right and she had put what she believed the Hydra version on the left. “What the FUCK am I missing?” she muttered to herself.
She was tired, but she knew the deadline was getting tight. Hydra wasn’t smart, but they’d figure it out sooner or later.
“What if it’s in the genetics?” Banner asked.
“I don’t do genetics,” she replied, turning to the scientist.
“Yeah, but we haven’t dived into it. One out of what 1000 women that’s not serum that’s genetics. What do you have that they don’t?”
She mulled over the question. “Do we have DNA for all three of us?” she responded.
“Of course.”
“Of course,” she nodded as she was handed papers.
She scanned Steve’s, nothing. His DNA didn’t pop in any specific way besides the serum, and it would take a very smart geneticist to figure out to fuse his DNA with someone else’s. Bucky’s was a little more mutated than Steve’s, it showed the bastardized version of the serum. It showed how the serum had increased his healing abilities, his strength, kind of like mutant DNA. She paused. “Fuckity, fuck, FUCK, FUCK!” she yelled, throwing the papers on the table. “HOW THE FUCK DID I MISS THAT?!”
Banner looked at her as if she had finally snapped, but waited for an explanation. However, he never received one, as she whisked herself out of the lab.
Y/n stood next to Fury at the head of the table, folders placed at each chair as they walked in. She was in tac gear; it was time. Time for the last chess piece to fall. “Take a seat,” Fury instructed.
They did as they were told, eyes falling on her, and she tried not to glance around the room. This wasn’t going to be an easy discussion, but it was needed if they were going to do this. They needed a reason.
Fury waved his hand as a sign to proceed. She cleared her throat, then began. “Over the past three years, I’ve been taking out a Hydra operation that is meant to create super babies using serum injected during pregnancy. We know this because of the intel we’ve gathered with each infiltration, the holding cells and the medical utensils, as well.” She paused, hands going to her hips. “We know that they currently do not have the science to know what they are doing won’t work.”
“And you do?” Clint butted in.
She closed her eyes, the hand on her right clenching against the hip bone. “I’m the miracle Hydra’s been looking for,” she explained, opening her eyes and staring at the faces at the room. “Because almost exactly 3 years ago, I became pregnant with Bucky’s baby.”
“That’s not possible!” Tony exclaimed. “Tests show…”
Y/n laughed. “Apparently, your labs are prone to mistakes, just like the real world. Bucky is the one with the super sperm not Steve. Whatever bastardized version of the serum Bucky got made him virile.”
“That doesn’t explain how the serum made you a baby super…” Tony stated.
“Mutant genetics latch on to the serum,” she answered. “I have recessive genes. Our tests show that a recessive gene is more likely a match with the serum. It’s not a 100 percent catalyst, more like 60 percent. But that’s better than the zero Hydra is getting.”
“That doesn’t explain how you received the serum. You weren’t injected with it, like we were,” Steve piped in.
“What Helen and I have figured out is that being stabbed released the mutated blood into my bloodstream,” she wrung her hands together. “If …. if I hadn’t been pregnant I would have died on the quinjet. I should have died. But the baby saved me, as did my recessive mutant genes.”
“So, in essence, you’re super.”
“In essence, yes,” she confirmed, eyes flicking to Bucky's then Steve’s. Their posture was rigid and tense. Bucky had yet to speak. “Helen calls me a baby super soldier. I have the strength and endurance, plus the healing abilities. All things that Hydra wants.”
“You didn’t know if it would transfer from mother to child?” Tony asked.
“Before I was stabbed, there was no serum in my bloodstream according to my weekly tests. Our hypothesis is that cutting through organs, veins and arteries released the mutated blood and genes into my system, but that’s the best we can come up with.”
“And Hydra knows about this?” Steve asked, eyes full of simmering embers of betrayal and hurt.
Y/n sighed. “There is a long web of lies that each of you know as a version of me. But the truth is, I graduated best of my class in Medicine, early,” she confessed. “I was accepted into a nanotechnology program in Delft, when I was headhunted for this exact program by Hydra.”
She loosened the grip on her hip. “I… uh… came to Fury after I was able to lie and escape after their offer. He set me up with a back story and a means to stay on as an Agent. Since then I’ve helped to try and secure intel on this program and work against it.”
“How do we know this isn’t a lie?” Bucky hissed.
Her eyes flicked right to him. “I get it, you're pissed and probably hate me, and hate I can deal with. Everything pertinent to this next mission is in that folder- entrances, exits... I’ve hacked into the Hydra system, all women currently held will fail.”
“And you want us to do what?” Steve questioned.
“I want to save those women and burn the place to the ground. It’s the last stronghold, the rest have been destroyed. We didn’t want to shut it down until we had the last puzzle piece. We had to know the answer, now we do. Now we go in,” she explained. “You can either fight with me or, stay out of my way.”
She was between them both. Bucky’s hand glided through her hair as Steve held on to her hip. She purred at the attention, causing them to chuckle. “I think our baby girl has turned into a cat,” Steve teased, thumb swiping her skin.
“Doll, have you transformed into a cat?” Bucky asked.
She hummed as his fingers scraped her scalp. Each hand went to touch one of her super soldiers, caressing muscle and skin. One of them kissed her crown and she preened.
Silence settled on the group for a few minutes before Steve spoke again, “What if…”
“What if, what, punk?”
“What if we had a commitment ceremony?” Steve finished.
Her eyes opened taking in the steel blue ones in front of you, as he formed a half smirk. “Are you trying to make us a honest couple, Stevie?” Bucky teased as she snorted.
Steve’s fingers tickled her ribs. “That’s not why I thought of it.”
“You want to get married?” she asked, turning to face the blonde super soldier.
“I just think that’s the next step.”
“Then what? A white picket fence and 2.5 kids?” she teased.
It was Bucky laughing this time and Steve mock glared at them both. “I guess that answers that.”
Steve moved away from them before she grabbed his wrist. His blue eyes looked hurt and closed-off. “Steve…” she whispered, tugging him back. “Bucky and I would love to marry you.”
“Yeah, punk,” Bucky agreed. “We talked about it while you were in Lima. We think it’s the next step too, just had to tease you about it.”
Steve huffed and glared before breaking out with a smile. “You two are going to be the death of me.”
She laughed, pushing him back onto the bed and straddling his hips. Her teeth nipped at his lips before kissing him. Bucky moved closer, rubbing his thigh. “We do try,” he commented, before pulling down his boxers.
Y/n stared at the redhead in the locker room. Nat and her had always been close. She knew how much Nat had wanted to be a mother. “Nat,” she whispered, walking closer.
The green eyes glanced at her as she put on her vest. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Nat asked, tightening the straps.
She stopped right in front of the locker and her friend. “I wanted to…” she paused. “You would be right after the boys, you know that Nat. I was going to tell everyone after the mission and then shit hit the fan.”
“I would have helped.”
“I can’t erase what I did, Nat,” she said. “I can’t… regret it, either. It took me a long time to get here and not be hateful, to not see red, not want revenge. It doesn’t heal the wound of her.”
“Her?” She asked.
You nodded. “It was a girl. A little princess for you to teach Russian.” Tears welled in her eyes as y/n continued, pulling out paper from a pocket. “Natasha Rebecca Rogers-Barnes.”
“That’s a mouthful,” Nat joked, a tear escaping.
Y/n held the paper to Nat. “I’ve been carrying her with me for the past 3 years. After this, I’ll still carry her, but I know I’ll have to let her go,” she choked out. “Don’t fight for me today. Fight for the women who are still in Hydra’s grasp.”
Nat threw her arms around y/n, hugging her close, tears falling down her pale cheeks. “Don’t ever do that again. Let me help next time.”
She nodded, swiping her own tears away. “Never.”
They were arriving under the cloak of darkness to the Hydra base. Steve had watched her the whole time. Her eyes flitted to him or Bucky occasionally during the whole flight. He felt a big gap between them again. A week ago when they had woken up together, he felt at home, like all the pieces were back. Then she had told them, they could have been fathers. Would have been fathers, if a Hydra goon hadn’t stabbed her.
“I shut her out, Steve,” Bucky had said one night. “I shut her out when she needed us the most…”
“It’s not your fault, Buck,” he soothed.
“If I hadn’t…”
“Buck saying what if right now isn’t going to help. She grieve by herself. She expects us to fall apart, to hate her.”
“She should hate me,” Bucky answered.
“That’s not helping!” Steve exclaimed. “Do you want her to walk out of this building again? Do you?”
“No, I never wanted that. I wanted her, and now all I can see is a baby in her arms, in your arms. We fantasized about it and we almost had it.”
“Then we need to show her that we aren’t leaving. That we are going to fight for her.”
Which led them here, to the mission. He watched her as she leaned over Nat’s shoulder before walking back to them. She bit her lip before beginning. “Don’t do this for me or for us. Do it for her,” she murmured, pushing an image into Bucky’s hands.
Steve looked over at it. It was a black and white sonogram. It was small, but you could see the growing fetus. Underneath it read ‘Natasha Rebecca Rogers-Barnes.’ Steve glanced up at her, her right hand on her hip, like it was whenever she was uncomfortable. “Doll…” Bucky whispered.
“Don’t do it for me,” she re-enforced. “Do it for girls like her. For the girls Hydra has taken away. Carry her with you.”
“Five clicks out, y/n!” Nat yelled.
She nodded, moving to the ramp and powering it down. “You need a parachute!” Steve instructed.
“Haven’t needed a parachute in three years, pretty boy!” she smiled, mock saluting as she jumped.
“She’s going to be the death of us.”

Barcelona 27.4.19
Barcelona it was the first time that we met. Barcelona!
Anyone for a 20 hour trip to Barcelona. 👋 over a weekend? Hell yeah.
National Express joy ride to the airport. Simply can’t wait for the same ride home. Who knew you could avoid so many motorways and really focus on all the A and what felt like B roads..... 🤢
The weather has been tropical most of the time over here in Barcelona (compared to UK standards). We are leaving behind storm Hannah in the UK.
We wanted to do more than just a gig over the weekend, so squeeze in a visit to the world famous Segrada Família.
An unfinished church built by Antonio Gaudi and still under construction today. We opted for the guided tour.
Having easily got through Gatwick security it would appear that I dumfounded the security team of Sagrada Família with the complex problem of having coins and a key ring in the same confined place. Yet a can of water was fine. Always better to be security safe, but they are now intimately familiar with the contents of my rucksack.
Our tour host was Sylvia and she narrated us around the outstanding church. The outside and inside both breathtaking. It is indeed a thing of beauty.
Onwards to Palau Sant Jordi. Next door to the Olympic park of “Barcelona..... “ the urge to break out into song is simply massive.
We met in the queue some fellow Agorians. Waves hello to Rocio and her boyfriend. Banner maker extraordinaire. Waiting in the afternoon sun never gets tiresome.
The security team checking tickets had an issue with my UK driving license to match my ticket and refused to accept the validity.... it’s only lucky I had my passport on me. Mild moment of panic.
Our VIP host Emma is a great welcomer. A friendly face. She had us in an orderly line and everything under control. We could hear sound checking in the afternoon. Unsure of what at this stage. General proceedings were running a little late. Late sound checking by Gang of Youths meant a slightly later entrance to the venue. We entered at a high into the venue and got walked down the steps with no running. The perfect way enter a venue. Our first adapted good ship Delta gig.
The venue is larger than I imagined and is very slow to fill up. We are suitably entertained by a dance light show from the awaiting crowd to the pre-show mixtape. Mobile phones are a true winner. Gang of Youths appear on stage around 8pm. Wow, what a real treat. I felt for them playing initially to so many empty seats. What a performance. The drummer thrashing it out and the lead singer dancing around the stage. He owned that performance. He even undertook a mini Ditmas run into the crowd and hugged some excited fans. Buy their records. See them live. You won’t be disappointed. I was so impressed.
9.35pm eventually came. The vibe from the crowd felt good and we weren’t disappointed. From the first chord we were all up for a good time there was BOUNCE a plenty in the room. Noticeably, all the seated people seemed to stand immediately and never sat down. Opening with Guiding Light.... swiftly moving onto Little Lion 🦁 Man.
Winston looking as dapper as ever in his crisp new suit.
It was a real joy to experience the Delta show in the round again. Without the side ‘ends’ it feels more open. Seeing the crowd across the other side of the stage jumping, and singing their hearts out made the experience even more inclusive and invigorating.
The lads seemed very in good form and really seemed to enjoy the gig, as did we. Personal highlights, so much love for Slip Away,
New lighting to replace the pyro, they worked really well. Winston now gets a well earned solo spot light in the centre of the stage during the start of Tompkins. Loved Tompkins.
The crowd respected the quietness of Cold Arms. With Marcus doing his best Spanish to inform them the “shut the fuck up”. They did. The crowd were singing their hearts out to Forever when the lads sang around the one mic. It was special.
Being joined on stage by Gang of Youths for the special Middle East cover of Blood was just mind blowing. Marcus spinning and dancing so much. It was an honour to watch and listen and learn. I can’t believe how quick the time flies by.
Gotta 🥰 Ditmas 🤗and at the end we could see across the stage that Marcus took the crowd surfing technique to re enter the stage!
Loved that show: it does indeed Awake the Soul. Any sign of tiredness was shaken off the moment the music started.
We dutifully recycled after the show. #deltatourrecycling
Walking to find a bus, we stumble across a fake merch seller. Tee shirts on a ground sheet, but not many left. The quality is questionable. This was apparent as the European tour venue for Amsterdam is the ‘ziggo done’. Unsure exactly what happened next. Possibly a language barrier, or the seller wanted to get home early, so she gave us the tee shirt. One limited edition for the memory box and careful washing.
Onwards to the airport, no time for a hotel tonight with the later Euro timings. Some of us have a 0700 flight to catch and a exceedingly cold marble stone floor to lie on while we wait. #notmuchbounce
I think we caught 1hrs sleep.
As I write this I am now about to embark on the coach ride home. With the front seat taken, I’m back seat all the way...conveniently located next to the toilet. As they say. What can go wrong?!!!
Until next time.

BoJack Horseman Rerun Rights Shopped to Cable Buyers, a Rarity for Netflix Series
Rerun rights to the Netflix animated comedy BoJack Horseman are being shopped to cable buyers by Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury distribution banner, an unusual example of a Netflix original series hitting the syndication market. BoJack producer Tornante Co. was among the first production companies to work with Netflix on original programming. BoJack premiered in 2014, when Netflix was still ramping up its originals strategy and wasn’t as focused on locking up global rights in all-encompassing deals that essentially buy out the syndication window that is so crucial to profitability for producers. Tornante, headed by Michael Eisner, clearly had the foresight to retain the off-network rights in BoJack for a domestic syndication sale. The offbeat comedy about a washed-up sitcom horse (voiced by Will Arnett) from the 1990s dropped its fourth season on Sept. 8. The series has racked up 48 episodes to date and has already been renewed for Season 5. "I’m very proud of BoJack Horseman. Who knew a washed up sitcom star, who happens to be a horse, would drive the best reviews of any television show or movie in which I have been involved in my career?” Eisner said. “This business is all about who you work with creatively. Thank goodness (creator) Raphael Bob-Waksberg walked through my door.” Debmar-Mercury chiefs Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said BoJack hits the market at a time when cable buyers are in need of fresh comedy series. The sale of BoJack will be closely watched by the industry as an example of the value of shows launched on Netflix in the wider TV eco-system, even though few series are likely to follow in BoJack’s domestic syndication footsteps, at least for now. “In an era when addictive, laugh-out-loud comedies are in short supply, BoJack Horseman delivers what cable networks have been missing,” Marcus and Bernstein said. BoJack is executive produced by Arnett, Aaron Paul, Steven A. Cohen, and Noel Bright. Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and Paul are also part of the voice cast.

Skyeward playlist
I felt like I should share my Skyeward playlist that I have assembled. It it just anything Skyeward with no particular mood or AU theme. Thanks to @orlissa and @skyeward-otp for suggesting a few after I asked them as an anon, I will also give a shout out to @gears-of-ward, ‘cause I took a song idea from your blog.
Feel free to suggest more songs, ‘cause honestly, I require at least 10 hours worth of Skyeward related songs. And you can tell from the list that I like alternative music so I think it needs more pop music.
Thank you to @stargazerdaisy for suggesting a song.
Link is here for my Youtube playlist (and I may get an 8tracks account to put this on too, we’ll see).
And below is the tracklist with a few notes below :)
This was exhausting to type out by the way. But enjoy!

Bleeding Out | by Imagine Dragons

“You know how they said, you two couldn’t get me pregnant?” she paused, her right hand going to her right side. “Well…,” she swallowed, “that wasn’t exactly true.”
“Well… really they said Bucky couldn’t get me pregnant… and that was wrong, too,” she cleared her throat. “If anyone’s potent in the sperm department it’s actually Bucky.”
She laughed softly, as she looked at her hands and then at the white wall in front of her. She couldn’t turn around. She couldn’t look at the two men who had held her through the morning light. “I was… we were… FUCK,” she muttered. “Before I was stabbed, I was about eight weeks pregnant.”
She closed her eyes, remembering.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“You’re about eight weeks along,” Helen explained, again, trying not to be exasperated.
“I thought… Bucky was sterile?” she asked.
“Apparently, that was wrong.”
She stared at the cream colored wall. Pregnant. How? She and the boys were usually… “Oh fuck,” she mumbled.
Two months ago, Bucky and her had a naked reunion sans condom, sans Steve.
“That looks like the face of woman, who just realized when conception occurred.”
She tried not to sneer at her friend. They had talked kids but it was a far off concept. Well, not that far off, but it was definitely more planned than this. Definitely, going to happen after a commitment ceremony not before, but apparently 48 hours of naked sex with the Winter Soldier will get you pregnant.
“Do you want to know the sex?”
“Pregnant?” Steve whispered.
She stood from the bed with her back to them. Her hand rested on her right side, it had been an unconscious move from her several times over the past months whenever they saw her. Something that she did when they talked about their separation. Steve realized it was where she had been stabbed, the event that caused her to lose the baby. “Yeah….” she whispered.
“How?” Bucky asked.
“Usually one gets pregnant when they don’t use protection,” Steve commented.
“We’ve always made sure,” Bucky said.
She shook her head, “Our reunion….”
Steve looked at Bucky, trying to figure out what Y/n was talking about. A light seemed to go off in his lover’s steel blue eyes. “The two days we stayed in bed…..” Bucky remembered, his eyes far away.
Steve tried to recall the event, his brain filtering through the memories. He couldn’t come up with two days spent in bed with his lovers. “When was this?” he asked.
“You were in Lima,” Bucky explained. “I had gotten home from Kiev early. Y/n and I celebrated our reunion by having sex…”
“Multiple times within 48 hours,” she finished, her back still to them.
“But they said…” Steve argued.
“Yea, about that,” she replied. “They got the samples mixed up. Bucky’s actually the one with the super sperm, we just didn’t know it.” She ran a hand threw her shorter hair. “And it doesn’t make sense. If anyone should have potent sperm it should be Steve,” she sighed in exasperation, like she’d been staring at a puzzle for too long. “But there’s something….FUCK….Jarvis?”
“Yes, Ms. y/l/n?” the AI replied.
“Do we still have the samples?” she asked, looking to the ceiling.
“Which samples, miss?” it asked.
“Blood, possible semen.”
“We have blood samples going as far back as 6 years, and semen samples are frozen about four years old.”
“Wake up, Banner.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Steve stood from the bed. “Where are you going?” he asked, reaching out for her but missing her.
She turned, eyes holding his for a split moment. “The labs,” she responded, moving towards the living room.
“That’s it?” Bucky asked, following her.
“What more do you want?” she asked, as she padded towards the door.
“I want to know why,” the brunette answered. “You never told either of us. We had no idea that you were ever …. Pregnant. That we were to be a family and you tell us, refuse to look at us during the process and drop it and walk away! Not only that but that’s after you fake your death, go on the run, show up at our engagement party and then run off again. DO YOU KNOW HOW THAT HURT US?!”
Bucky watched her hands start to shake. She turned fully around to face them both. “I imagine it hurt as much as it hurt me. I imagine that you will go through the same emotions that I did, when I lost the baby almost 3 years ago. BUT you will do it together, something that I was unable to do. Instead, I chose to protect both of you and fake my death so that you two would have a chance at happiness….”
“You didn’t give us a CHOICE,” Bucky cut in, stepping towards her. His posture tense and battle ready. “You didn’t even let us know what we lost!”
“Would you have wanted me to?” she threw back in his face. “Before I ‘died’ you barely looked at me, barely even acknowledge me, as I was grieving. Did you want me to tighten that noose by telling you that saving your life caused me to lose our baby? Is that what you want?”
There was silence. Her eyes flitted between Steve and Bucky as they looked at her. She pulled at the shirt she wore. “I don’t regret my actions. I don’t regret saving your life. Sometimes, I wish somehow that we could have been the perfect family - the four of us. That maybe just maybe, the baby could have made it. But that wasn’t in the cards and wouldn’t have led to me putting a stop to HYDRA’s super baby program and hurting innocent women. Wouldn’t have led me to figuring out Steve’s super soldier formula. I can’t regret doing it, because if I do, it will eat me alive.”
A few tears fell down her cheeks. “I made my peace with you two possibly hating me a long time ago. Now if you excuse, me there is a piece of the puzzle that Bruce and I are missing that can help me stop HYDRA and this program forever.”
The two super soldiers said nothing, as she walked out the door.
She stared at the guest bedroom. ‘We will paint it peach,’ she recalled Steve saying. ‘Peach?’ she had asked. ‘Peach,’ he confirmed. He had explained that the color was nurturing and inviting, ‘feelings we want to convey to our baby,’ he said.
She tried to push the sob down. Tried to not let it escape. It would be her last time in this apartment. Fury was letting her out, rather he had agreed to help her. Just like he had so many years ago, when she was running from HYDRA. But at that time, she hadn’t been in love. Just a runaway medical student with a terrorist organization who wanted her for a special project to make super babies. And in the end, she had done just that when she had gotten pregnant. She was proving that HYDRA could make super babies if they could get the serum right. She just didn’t know how and she couldn’t figure out HYDRA’s serum.
She had figured out Erskine’s serum, but that didn’t help her figure out how Bucky’s serum created a super baby and why she had been the only one so far to be successful in creating a super baby. And it didn’t explain how the serum had made her into a super soldier after the stabbing. ‘All things to work on,’ Fury had said, when she had come to him with her proposition. ‘They won’t be happy if they ever find out the truth, you know that?’ ‘I know.’
So there she stood, imagining peach walls and a crib. They couldn’t ever know. She had woven too many lies. Woven too many half truths about her past and who she was. And now after the miscarriage, she couldn’t stay. Bucky wouldn’t talk to her and Steve was moving between the two, trying to sew back the pieces and that was without them knowing that they could have been fathers.
The sob finally escaped her mouth, as she stood there holding her duffel. ‘Don’t take much and don’t take memories,’ Fury instructed.
Her grip on the bag wavered. Part of her couldn’t do it. Wanted to run into their arms and unweave the web, but the ink was already dried. In a few days, a body much like hers would come back in a pinebox. Another sob escaped as her eyes went around the room, remembering their conversation about kids and the spare bedroom. She closed her eyes, “Peach would have been the perfect color.”
