The whumpee doesn't remember how they ended up in a soft bed, but what they did remember was pain, tears, bloodstained roads and ground, and someone who was possibly near to them...............dying.......
The whumpee opens their eyes to see a softly lit room, someone was sitting near their bedside; "oh, good... you've finally woken up. " The caretaker said. The whumpee noticed soft blankets resting upon their body. They turned their head slightly, feeling the pillows propping them up. The whumpee tried to sit up, the blanket sliding off their chest, revealing bandages wrapped up around their wounds and injuries. "Please lay back down. You're hurt." The caretaker worried, placing their hand on the whumpee's shoulder. The whumpee obliged; still very woozy from whatever had happened to them.
"I just wanted to know, considering your condition.... who did this to you?" The caretaker asked
The whumpee tried to recall, but it felt like there wasn't anything.........tears welled up in their eyes as the whumpee said....
" I don't remember ......".
The whumpee didn't have enough strength left to stay awake--or even cry. They felt themselves slipping back into the murky depths of unconsciousness, the last thing that they heard was the caretaker saying; "Save your strength, please.... everything will be fine, just rest...."

Whumpuary 2024 No. 13
Left to die | Barely conscious | "I'm fine"
Whumpuary Prompts List
TW: shot, bleeding out, abandoned, denial
Whumpee lay on the ground, eyes half-closed, staring at the sky. The moon and the stars were their only companions now. Everyone else had abandoned them. Whumpee understood why. They’d been fatally shot, and if their former companions tried to carry them, everyone else would die, too.
That’s what everyone said, anyway.
Was it getting darker because it was getting later in the night, or was Whumpee’s vision fading?
The wound in their gut pulsed with every heartbeat and ached with every breath. Whumpee had long ago lost the sensation in their legs, and they couldn’t tell if the liquid on the ground was blood or water anymore. That might’ve been because it was darker now, but Whumpee couldn’t know for sure.
For all they knew, their companions had dumped them in a puddle. Some ‘companions’ they’d turned out to be.
Whumpee closed their eyes. A soft breeze caressed their face as they listened to the sounds of the night. Whistling wind, creaking branches of nearby trees, and singing insects. The distant, indistinct running footsteps and shouting of their enemies as they pursued Whumpee’s companions.
It wasn’t a terrible night to die.
They could be underground, away from the stars.
Instead, Whumpee was here, accompanied by the moon and the nighttime creatures. Whumpee exhaled slowly. It didn’t hurt as much to breathe anymore. This was good? This was good. It had to be good.
Whumpee couldn't do anything if it wasn’t.

Whumpuary 13
Tumblr media
Whumpuary prompts should theoretically make up one cohesive narrative, though I'm not currently putting in the effort to flesh out the story around the prompts just yet. I have good intentions to do so eventually. Masterlist. Oh yeah and they're totally out of order, chronologically.
((content warnings: captivity, recovery ))
promptspiration: @whumpuary 13: Barely conscious
Whumpee: Draco Malfoy, Ollivander, Luna Lovegood Caretaker (/cowhumpee): Luna Lovegood Pairing: Harry/Draco whump type: mostly comfort fic type: Deathly Hallows "Voldemort learns Draco hooked up with Harry" AU
Luna arrives in the cellar.
words: ~550
-------------------
Draco flinched awake when watery sunlight invaded the cellar, and squinted toward the stairs. He got a brief look at Ollivander leaning against the other wall — the man looked like a stiff breeze would break him in half, and he was hiding his face from the light — and then silhouettes blocked the light. He couldn't see much, but a blonde girl walked down the steps under her own power. She weirdly said "Thank you," in a distant voice, and with an awkward mutter from Wormtail the door closed behind her, leaving her to cautiously pick her way down the stairs.
"Excuse me," she said vaguely. She made it sound like she happened to be talking to herself where they could hear. "Can you say something? I don't want to step on you."
"It's no trouble," Ollivander said in his weak voice. "There is a great stretch of free wall this direction."
"Hello, Mister Ollivander."
"It's Looney Lovegood," Draco muttered as he realised.
"Oh, some people call me that, but I actually prefer Luna."
"Eleven and one-quarter inches, apple wood… A rare wood that doesn't take to many wielders. A strong wand for the pure of heart…"
Draco put his head back in the dirt and zoned out again.
—-
The door opened and Draco opened his eyes dully, waiting. "Draco." There it was. He silently pushed himself up to his knees, gathering himself to get to his feet.
"Are you going somewhere, Draco?" Lovegood asked, but Ollivander quietly shushed her. Draco didn't respond, but dragged himself up against the wall and then up the stairs, to his waiting punishment.
—-
He didn't really remember coming back; everything was vague, but he hurt, and he knew he'd been pushed down the stairs again. He covered his head and let out some of the tears into the darkness.
A quiet voice hummed a barely-familiar lullaby that tickled the edges of memory. The melody obscurely helped, and he drifted on it instead of the pain.
—-
In all actuality, Luna was a godsend. She had a weird way of combining acting like this was perfectly normal with addressing the realities of the situation. She encouraged both him and Ollivander to eat the intermittent meals they were provided without drawing attention to how important it probably was. She didn't make a big deal of it when he cried, but she said her mother used to sing that song for her, and Ollivander commented that maybe all mothers were the same. Maybe they were, because Draco knew the same song, even though he could not really remember it.
She brought news of the outside world, news that Harry was still out there and still had allies, news that there really was a resistance to the Dark Lord… to Voldemort. Her ability to keep up a conversation about things that didn't matter at all to the bleak situation sort of grounded it, and her chatter marked time so it wasn't just an eternity of staring into the darkness. It got Ollivander talking more; it seemed to do his heart good just to listen to her. Eventually even Draco started talking again, at first to ask obvious questions about the absurdity she believed which he knew were pointless but he just couldn't help himself, and then, gradually, just because he could.
She brought hope.

as much as I love whumpees who are just absolutely knocked out by their illness, there's something equally great about whumpees who are just barely there. their eyes are still open a sliver, and when caretaker moves across the room they track their movements lazily. they don't have the energy to speak but they don't need to- the pained look in their eyes and the weak groans they're able to make tell the story well enough.
they're not conscious, but they're not unconscious either. they're just... in between. drifting. too sick to be alert but also too sick to fall asleep comfortably.
all caretaker can do is sit by their side with a washcloth to gently wipe the sheen of sweat from their forehead and soothe them with reassurances that, judging by that glazed look in their eyes, caretaker isn't quite sure they can even understand.

Living weapon Whumpee, bloody and barely conscious, trying to drag themself away. Their legs collapse beneath them, and the last thing they see is the enemy approaching before it all goes black.
When Whumpee wakes up, they're expecting a cell. Or restraints, or something. They're very surprised to find themself on a soft bed, wounds cleaned and bandaged, completely unbound.

The whumpee laid in a bed, their injuries wrapped with gauze and a blanket placed atop their body. They couldn't move much, the only strength they had was to occasionally toss and turn on the bed. The caretaker kept vigil over the whumpee, tending to their injuries and mopping the whumpee's forehead with a damp cloth to halt the fever. the only waking moments of the whumpee were dizzy and unclear, they felt lightheaded, their vision unclear, and their body weak. Muffled voices were the only thing to comfort their aching and weak body.
The caretaker had no idea why the whumpee was found covered in blood and having been badly tortured and tied up; but the caretaker just wanted the whumpee to be safe and feel safe, so they didn't ask any questions.

"It's over" is such an underused and beautifully whumpy bit of dialogue. Here, allow me to demonstrate with a few examples:
cw/ mention of death, knives, captivity, torture
---
"It's okay. Shhh. It's over," Caretaker whispers to a barely conscious Whumpee after rescuing them from Whumper, whisking them away to safety.
"Stop your blubbering like a baby. It's over." Whumper snarls, throwing their tools down after they've just finished torturing Whumpee for hours on end.
"End of the line, Whumpee. It's over." Whumper smirks as they corner Whumpee after hunting them for so long. Nowhere to go, nowhere to run. Backing Whumpee into a wall.
"It's over-" Whumpee gasps to themself in shock as they stand over Whumpers body, knife in hand. Or when they've woken up in cold sweats from another night terror. Or maybe it's what Whumpee tells themself to comfort themself after Whumper is finished hurting them for the day.
And I could keep going all day with examples. But I just love it. Thank you for coming to my TED talk 🙇‍♀️

Caretaker being a vampire with all its accompanying guilt and shame who wants nothing to do with their curse, and whumpee being someone with a torrential past with vampires. An odd duo, but they make it work. One night whumpee is a pacing, unable to sit still, pathetically trying to self-soothe, anxious wreck. Caretaker realizes they can, in fact, help quell the raging fear within whumpee’s gut by entrancing them for a little bit. Whumpee is a bit put off, but eventually accepts the offer out of sheer desperation to feel calm.
aka whumpee and caretaker taking a piece of their power back by whumpee letting someone take control in a safe environment, and caretaker taking control in a way that isn’t inherently inhumane.
tw vampire caretaker, dehumanisation, self-loathing, mind control
Caretaker tried their best to stay away from Whumpee as much as they could in the small cabin. They had found the poor human injured and barely conscious out in the snow just a week ago, and now that they were well enough to protest the care, they did so with all their might.
Thanks for saving me, but I don’t want a vampire anywhere near me.
Caretaker wished they’d had a retort, but there was nothing to say, really. It wasn’t like they would’ve wanted a vampire near them, and they were one themself. They simply agreed to stay as far from Whumpee (and their neck and blood) as possible until the snow melted enough for the road to be safe. After that, they’d go their separate ways.
“Is that… human blood?” Whumpee asked one day when they opened the fridge. Caretaker nodded mutely. “Wonderful. Just… wonderful! Am I gonna end up in the fridge?”
“I stole them from a hospital,” they admitted quietly.
“Even better! I wonder how many people had to die as a result of that.”
“I know you’d rather me starve to death,” Caretaker said a little bitterly. “It’s understandable. I get it. But can you just hold off on that sentiment for a few more days?”
“Sure. Anything to make you comfortable.”
The following evening was unbearably tense. Whumpee couldn’t sit still, they were pacing around the living room like a poisoned rat with extra anxiety. Caretaker had watched them from behind their book for at least half an hour before the idea popped into their head, and another hour before they dared mention it.
“I could help put you to sleep,” they offered gently. Whumpee barked out a laugh.
“Just what I need. I mean, being a mindless thrall is a step up from being anxious, isn’t it?”
Caretaker bit their lower lip and looked back at the pages. “I just thought I’d offer. Sorry.”
Whumpee scoffed. “Yeah, well, I’m not interested.”
As the hours passed, and Whumpee got more and more agitated, Caretaker noticed they started glancing in their direction more and more often. They looked like they were considering the offer. Caretaker didn’t say a word, though, not wanting to embarrass them or seem pushy.
Eventually, Whumpee caved. “Fine.”
Caretaker blinked. “Fine?”
Whumpee rolled their eyes. “I’ll… I’ll let you use your hypnosis powers on me. I’m… really tired, and I just… I’m really tired. I can’t sleep. My feet hurt. If you can make it all go away, I’m… willing to give it a go.”
“If you’re sure,” Caretaker said carefully, setting their book aside. “It won’t make you a mindless thrall, I promise.”
“All the better.”
The human took a few minutes to actually follow through and settle on the sofa next to them. They were stiff as a board, flinching violently when Caretaker tried to reach out and touch them.
“I thought you just needed eye contact?” they asked defensively. “Don’t touch me.”
“It works better with skin to skin contact. Quicker. Less time spent with me awkwardly staring into your eyes while you glare at me.”
“I don’t need it to work quickly. I just need it to work, and I need you not to touch me.”
Caretaker let their hand fall back into their lap. “As you wish. This should feel nothing but pleasant and soothing.”
They looked into Whumpee’s eyes, focusing on finding a way into their mind. It was difficult with how guarded and hostile they were, but they eventually found a little crack, a desire to be cared for and helped.
“Is this it?” Whumpee asked, voice laced with cynicism. “I don’t feel anything.” Despite their words, Caretaker could already see them stifling a yawn.
“You will,” they said softly. “If you want to. And I think you do. All you want is some good, restful sleep.” As they poked around further, widening that crack and flooding Whumpee’s brain with peace and quiet, they realised Whumpee hadn’t slept too well on any given day in the past week. “And no wonder. You’ve been so restless. Were you scared to sleep?”
“Of course I was,” they said easily. Their voice had less of an edge to it, and they ever so slightly started leaning towards Caretaker. “I was in the same house as… as a vampire…”
Caretaker tried reaching out again, and this time, Whumpee didn’t protest. The poor human felt so fragile as they guided them to lie down on the sofa, head in their lap, and Caretaker wondered how they’d managed to keep going until now. “There’s no need to be afraid anymore,” they cooed, carding their fingers through Whumpee’s hair as they talked. “You can rest now. I’ll keep you safe.”
“Safe…” they murmured.
“So safe. You just close your eyes and sleep, alright? I’ll wake you later, once you’re well-rested.”

Currently obsessing with the idea of a Whumpee who is recovering from hypothermia waking up cuddled between two of their friends.
They don’t really remember what happened and they feel like death barely warmed over. But the bed is so warm and they feel so safe in their friends’ arms that even half conscious with a budding fever, they know that even after everything they just went through, they are going to be okay.

The scene where Caretaker accompanies Whumpee is one of my favorite scenes. Some scenes that come to mind
Classic scene. Whumpee lay in a hospital bed with medical equipment attached to his body. Caretaker will sit by the bed, hold Whumpee's hand, and occasionally stroke Whumpee's hair gently. If Whumpee is unconscious, Caretaker will pray fervently, and if Whumpee is conscious, Caretaker will speak softly to say that Whumpee will be fine and that everything is over.
When Caretaker sat waiting for Whumpee, who was asleep. Maybe Whumpee just had a nightmare, so Caretaker waited for him to make Whumpee feel safe. Maybe Whumpee was taken in by the medication that was prescribed. Maybe Whumpee was exhausted after everything he'd been through and was just barely able to sleep. Or maybe it was just Caretaker who went into Whumpee's room secretly to check on Whumpee's condition.
When accompanying Whumpee to sit on the terrace, maybe they sunbathe in the morning or just sit and relax together while talking about what they've been through or what they'll do in the future.
When at the trial, the punishment for Whumper was determined. Caretaker sat next to Whumpee, who was trying to be strong. Caretaker grabbed Whumpee's hand to strengthen it.
When accompanying Whumpee to finish his food, Whumpee takes longer to just finish his bowl of soup or porridge, and Caretaker sits beside him while occasionally wiping Whumpee's mouth.
When helping Whumpee clean himself, maybe Caretaker will carefully bathe Whumpee, or maybe Caretaker will wait at the bathroom door in case Whumpee needs help.
When Whumpee only believed in Caretaker. A frightened Whumpee will continue to cling to the Caretaker and the Caretaker patiently positions Whumpee close to him for comfort. Maybe in the dining chair while the Caretaker is cooking. Maybe in the living room, where Whumpee can still see the Caretaker while the Caretaker takes care of some things. Maybe they'll sleep in the same bed.
When Whumpee tells all the team members what he went through and what he got after being released from Whumper, Caretaker will rub his back or hold his hand when he hears Whumpee start to shake.
When treating or changing the bandages on Whumpee's body, Whumpee just lets Caretaker take care of him, and Caretaker does the best to do so.
Anything you want to add?
