Baby It's Cold Outside — VoicePlay music video
youtube
This song has become an annual topic of discussion in recent years. But regardless of how you feel about the lyrics or the societal context in which they were written, it's hard to deny that it's a catchy tune. It's also pretty difficult to resist being charmed by the cautious flirtation between Broadway star Shoshana Bean and our self-deprecating bass man. Even if there's about as much of a chance for snow in southern California where they filmed the video as there is in their home state of Florida.
Details:
title: Baby It's Cold Outside (feat. Shoshana Bean)
original performers: Frank Loesser & Lynn Garland at private parties; first recorded for public release by Esther Williams, Ricardo Montalbán, Betty Garrett, & Red Skelton in Neptune's Daughter (1949)
written by: Frank Loesser
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci & Hannah Juliano
release date: 15 December 2017
My favorite bits:
the simplicity of starting with just the two leads
the glances between the peanut gallery behind them just before they start harmonizing
Shoshana's michievous grin as she sings ♫ "At least I'm gonna say that I tried" ♫
the jazzy ♫ "Baby, it's co-o-oold" ♫ as she gets up
Layne sneaking into frame right on time to drop some incredible wind sound effects and brush snares
Geoff's completely unconvincing argument about a snowstorm in Los Angeles while pointing away from the enormous windows
everyone turning to look at Earl when his wingmanning gets a little too enthusiastic
Eli's sock puppet miming during ♫ "bound to be talk tomorrow" ♫
Shoshana's ad libbed riffs during the fade-out
busting into joyful impromptu Hanukkah songs in the outro
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
This video was part of a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles during which they recorded three videos with three different collaborators in two days. On the day they filmed this one, they also recorded a cover of "Waving Through A Window" from Dear Evan Hansen with Kurt Hugo Schneider.
The following summer, Shoshana starred alongside founding 4:2:Five member Mykal Kilgore in a limited concert run of Songs for a New World as part of New York City Center's "Encores! Off-Center" series.
Makeup artist Kimber Parrish first met some of the VoicePlay guys when she got her professional start prepping monsters for the "Beetlejuice Revue" show at Universal Studios Orlando. She had since relocated to the Los Angeles park, which turned out to be convenient for this project. She specializes in prosthetics and special effects, so doing a little glamor makeup was a much simpler task.
While they were getting ready to film, some of the guys used a running joke of imitating Michael McDonald sneezing (which originated on Family Guy) to keep their voices warmed up.
The YouTube description contains an entire script turning the lyrics on their head: * I really can't stay… * That's cool I have to get up early in the morning * I've got to go away… * Yeah, i get it, it's totally fine. * This evening has been * Why are you still sitting here I thought you had to leave? * So very nice * Thanks for saying so, maybe we should find your purse * My mother will start to worry, * I mean, maybe, call her? * My father will be pacing the floor * Here's your phone - definitely call them * So really I'd better scurry * Yeah, it sounds like we better hurry, your folks sound nuts. * Well maybe just a half a drink more * NO! I mean, you better get going it's late. I've had a really nice time too. Text me when you're home safe; your Uber is here. BYEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Interlude: Bravo, Bravo, Bravo
Tumblr media
Part 7.5 of Love, Animals, and The Stolen Goat
Pairing: Dieter Bravo x AnimalHandler!Reader (f!Reader; nicknamed Panda)
Rating/Warning: M! Language. A general obsession with Beetlejuice the Musical, Musical, Musical. This is purely indulgent and I regret NOTHING!
A/N: Moving this up here for this part because I AM SO SORRY FOR BEING SO INACTIVE THIS MONTH. My motivation has been low and I write when the inspiration strikes. I feel the writing bug again so hopefully Part 8 of this series will be out as well as my super late Hanukkah holiday fic with Frankie. Thanks for sticking with me through the low points as well as the high ones! I appreciate you all.
P.S. HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS!! I adore you all and can’t thank you enough for making this year special! Without all of you, I probably wouldn’t even have started writing on here. I’m anxiety ridden so I doubt myself a lot. Just thank you so much for the support. I appreciate every single one of you from the bottom of my heart. Here’s to more stories to come in 2023!
Much love,
Muse 💜
-------------------------------------------------------
“They want you to what?!”
Dieter sighs for what feels like the hundredth time. He looks up at you from his place on his couch where Margie lies curled into his side, looking like a super fluffy plushie. He drops a hand to her head and pets, probably for stress relief. A script spreads across his lap. You stand above him, arms crossed.
“Do I really need to repeat myself?”
Laserbeams of anger shoot out of your eyes.
He removes the hand holding the script down to raise up to you in placation. It flops closed and he sighs in frustration.
“Again - I was asked to play Beetlejuice in the musical in concert at the Hollywood Bowl.”
You can only gape at him, your mouth hanging open like a fish.
“Can you even sing??”
Dieter reaches for his chest with his free hand to clutch at his heart. Good god.
“Panda, please don’t wound my pride like that. I can’t take it.”
“You didn’t answer the question.”
He raises an eyebrow at you. You raise one right back. You will not stalemate. YOU WILL NOT STALEMATE.
“It’s Beetlejuice.”
“You’re STILL not answering.”
You lean your body down to his level. You rest your arm on the back of the couch - you lean forward to stare into Dieter’s soul. You narrow your eyes in the best attempt you have to be scary…which isn’t easy since you’re about as threatening as a hamster.
“Can-”
You lean forward more.
“You-”
You get so close your noses are almost touching.
“Sing?”
Dieter stares into your soul. You refuse to break your uncomfortably close eye contact.
It only takes five seconds for him to crack.
Dieter breaks eye contact with the most dramatic, put-upon sigh you’ve ever heard. And then…mumbles? Your eyebrows crinkle in confusion.
“What?”
He mumbles again, head bent down towards Margie as though she could save him from whatever fresh hell he is admitting to. Margie lifts her head and gently nudges Dieter’s chin. He pats her head gently, comforting her as much as himself. You crouch down and get on his level. Looks like your gonna have to bring out your gentle parenting voice - a tone you only use with your sister’s children and every single animal you train.
“Dee.”
He looks back up at you, looking like a skittish deer. You stare back as sincerely as you can - you don’t want to frighten him off any more than you already have.
“You don’t have to be embarrassed to tell me things. I know your name was tough, but I want you to know you can trust me. We’re a team.”
He smiles gently at you and takes your hand. You both grin at each other like idiots while Margie bleats with her demands for attention.
“Panda…”
You squeeze his hand.
“Yeah, Dee?”
“I can’t sing for shit. I just really wanted to play Beetlejuice.”
“BENICIO I SWEAR TO GOD-”

For your sleepover -- pls tell me your headcanons for Peter and Sunshine celebrating various holidays together. Are they traditionalists? Do they celebrate Hanukkah? Do they bake together?
TURN IT UP:
Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year's):
They go over to May's house for dinner. They eat apples dipped in honey. May makes her famous homemade Challah bread and Sunshine brings a dessert of some kind. She makes an amazing spiced honey cake! They spend time with May and play some board games with her.
Yom Kippur:
Yom Kippur always happens 10 days after Rosh Hashanah and it's the holiest Jewish holiday. So it's one of the few times Peter and Sunshine go to a synagogue for service. They don't always fast (which is what you traditionally do), but do reflect on the past year and ways they want to be better for themselves and each other.
Peter hadn't gone to service since Gwen died. So he was quite nervous the first time he went. Sunshine kept assuring him that he didn't have to go with her, but he wanted to, he wanted to spend it with her. She held his hand the whole time, squeezing it so he knew she was there for him.
Halloween:
Sunshine goes all out for Halloween. She has several tubs of Halloween decorations she gets out. Peter compromised and said she could start putting them out after Labor Day. Their little apartment door is all decked out. They like to do costumes that are easy, so one year they were the couple from BeetleJuice, another year they were Ellie Sadler and Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. Sunshine brought a cheap knockoff Spiderman costume for her and Peter one year as a joke. Peter likes her costume better as it's more revealing.
Thanksgiving:
They go to Sunshine's family for Thanksgiving! I can see Sunshine coming from a very sweet and big family. So for Peter, it's overwhelming his first time. It's a lot of people. Sunshine finds him in the guest bedroom and they sit and talk for a bit. Then one of Sunshine's nephews comes in and asks if Peter can play with them. Peter says yes and spends hours playing with them outside, tossing them into the pile of leaves. Sunshine's heart absolutely melts when she sees Peter playing with her nieces and nephews! She is on him the whole time afterwards girl has a breeding kink
Hannukah:
They have a little menorah in their house that they light! They spend one night at May's house, which is where they make latkaes (her kitchen is bigger). I can see Sunshine making some banging kugel. Another night is spent with friends, another night is spent with Sunshine's Aunt who lives in the city. They give each other little gifts here and there and on the eighth night, give each other their main present. Sunshine is really good at gift giving. I can also see Peter being really crafty (he did make his own Spidey suit!) And making her sunflower and Sun pattern stuff. I can see Peter getting into knitting and making her scarves so she can stay warm in the winter when outside for recess!
Christmas:
They get Chinese food and watch movies in their pajamas (as is the traditional way when you're Jewish lol). Sunshine bakes sugar cookies and Peter eats more of the dough than actually helps. It usually ends with them cuddling on their couch, watching Home Alone reruns.
New Year's:
Sunshine drags Peter to a New Year's party. Always. I wouldn't say she's a huge extrovert, but she likes to celebrate with folks! Their first year, Peter was unsure whether to kiss her or not, so Sunshine took the lead and planted one right on his face. Now he doesn't hesitate lol.
Valentine's Day:
Valentine's day is when they dress up and go to a fancy restaurant. It's a miracle if Peter is able to keep his hands off of her before they get to the restaurant. They both buy each other flowers. Peter gets Sunshine sunflowers and marigolds, Sunshine gets Peter a mix of Malvas and Magnolias.
For their first Valentine's Day as a couple, poor Peter was so nervous. He tried cooking dinner for her and Sunshine had to step in. They ended up ordering Thai food and ate it on their balcony. Sunshine still swears it's the best Valentine's Day she's ever had.
Passover:
They got to May's for dinner. Peter has been leading the seder since Ben died. It's something he accepted long ago. But then Sunshine comes in and she's so proud of Peter and for the first time, instead of just reciting the story of Passover, he's actually lively and even sneaking in some jokes. May almost cries because it's almost like Peter is back to his old self, his self before death and lost love marred him.
Fourth of July:
They go to a friend's cookout. I truly believe Peter has a tank top of one of the founding fathers drinking a beer. Sunshine wears red lipstick which Peter absolutely loves and makes it known. Peter takes her to the top of the Empire State building because it has the best view of the fireworks.
I think I got most of the major holidays! Thank you Rae for indulging me! ♥️♥️♥️

When his time in the Netherworld began, it marked the end of holiday celebration for Beetlejuice. It wasn’t something he particularly minded–time spent with family was a lost cause, anyways, considering his mother–and not a lot of holidays were ever really his thing. Life became a sort of full-time Halloween, and all the others got left behind.
As he spent more time at the Maitland-Deetz family house more often, he started to join them for the holidays. The first one they invited him was for Thanksgiving, which he brushed off. “Too busy for turkey day,” he had said, but Barbara made a plate for him to have anyway. When he picked it up the day after, he felt the pang of regret for the first time in what felt like decades.
Adam invites him to celebrate Hanukkah the same year, and he spends days in his head about the whole thing. From what he can remember, Hanukkah is the holiday he misses the most, and to spend it with these people–his family? He tries not to think about that word–is daunting.
He’s reluctant, but on the first night of the festival, he shows up, lurking in the corner of the living room. Lydia passes by while Adam’s up in the attic searching for candles. She looks him up and down skeptically. “Are you nervous?”
“No,” he says immediately, pausing in picking at a spot on the wallpaper to scowl at her.
She lowers her eyebrows skeptically and stares for a long second. “Really?”
“Okay, yes, I am,” he says, lowering his voice to a whisper. “I don’t wanna fuck this up. What if I do something wrong?” The words come out fast and harsh, and a piece of the wallpaper tears off into his palm. “Shit.”
“Dude,” Lydia says, reaching out to pat his shoulder and pulling away to see dirt on her hand. She rubs her fingers together and wipes her hand on her jeans, face scrunched with annoyance. “Gross.” She shakes her head. “Don’t worry about it.”
“Real helpful advice,” he gripes, sticking the piece of paper in his pocket and moving across the room so he can pretend that it wasn’t him if needed.
Adam’s voice echoes from the stairwell as he comes back into the kitchen. “Found them!” He emerges with a big grin on his face, holding a box of white stick candles.
“Oh, great, honey,” Barbara says, coming into the living room, wiping her hands on a towel that she drapes over her shoulder. “You ready to get started?”
Lydia sits on the couch, pulling her knees up and leaning over the backrest to look at the side table that the menorah is set on. There’s a hand-knitted blue and white cloth laid underneath that Barbara spent time making when a particularly bad snowstorm hit. Barbara switches off the lights while Adam takes out two candles, placing the opened box on the windowsill. “Where’s the–”
Barbara cuts him off, handing him a lighter. “Here,” she says, smiling, and he kisses her temple.
“Thanks.” He turns to look at Beetlejuice, who has been cowering in the corner while this played out, trying to make himself as small as possible. “Come here, BJ.”
He scuffs his feet on the floor a little while heading over. “Am I just gonna sit around an’ watch?” He asks, sounding more grumbly and harsh than he intends. He bites his tongue to keep from apologizing, cursing himself even as the sentence leaves his mouth.
“Well, no,” Adam laughs. “Of course not.” Beetlejuice feels the relief as he reacts normally, even to his gruffness.
Barbara takes one of the candles as Adam offers, placing it in the center. “We want you to light the first candle,” she tells him gently.
“Well, duh,” he scoffs, quickly attempting to play off the shock that he feels. “I am the most important member of the family.”
“Booo,” Lydia calls from the couch, tossing a throw pillow at him. She misses. Adam and Barbara laugh, and Beetlejuice takes a deep breath while they’re occupied to steady himself, shoving his hands in his pockets. He rips the piece of wallpaper in two.
Barbara hushes Lydia amiably with a finger to her mouth, as Adam opens a little drawer on the table and takes out two kippot, handing one to Beetlejuice. He accepts it, his hands shaking a little as he unfolds it and ducks his head, resting it in place. The last time he wore one of these, well.. He doesn’t like to think about it. It’s suddenly hard to look at Lydia, so he keeps his back to her. Barbara seems to notice his nerves, giving him a sympathetic look.
Adam hums as he lights the shamash, a song that sounds familiar to Beetlejuice but one that he can’t quite place; an old hymn, maybe? When he’s finished, he rests the lighter on the table next to the menorah and moves a bit to the side. They pause there, looking at the single candle, and the Maitlands begin to quietly recite blessings.
Beetlejuice mumbles along to what he can remember,
“בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ, מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,”
lapsing into silence for the latter half of each of the prayers, awkwardly shifting on his feet. When they’ve finished, after another second, Adam gestures for him to move forward.
He glances to Barbara again, who nods encouragingly. Beetlejuice feels unsteady on his feet as he moves to the front of the table while Barbara places the next candle on the rightmost side of the menorah. He picks up the shamash, willing his hands to stay still, and cups his hand around the flame to prevent it from blowing out. Adam resumes his quiet humming, and Barbara leans into his side. He wraps an arm around her.
Wax drips onto Beetlejuice’s thumb, warm, hardening quickly against his cold skin, as he tilts the candle to the wick of the other. It lights, and Beetlejuice replaces the shamash, stepping back again to be in line with the Maitlands.
They stand for a moment, watching the flickering of the candles, as Adam gradually quiets his humming until it’s silent in the room. Beetlejuice holds his breath, waiting for something terrible to happen, feeling like it could at any moment.
But nothing does. Adam moves his arm away from Barbara’s waist to take off his kippah, and the silence is broken. “Good job,” Barbara says kindly to Beetlejuice, patting his forearm.
“You’ll be back tomorrow?” Adam asks, taking the other kippah from Beetlejuice’s outstretched hand.
“Yeah,” he says, and clears his throat. “Yeah, but just remember that Hanukkah will never be the same without me in the future.” He raises his arms in mock defense. “Don’t blame a guy for his natural charm and likability.”
Lydia groans. “Oh, shut up,” she complains, and another throw pillow flies across the room, landing square against his back.
“Lydia!” Barbara chastises, but she’s giggling. “Be careful, there are candles over here!”
“I don’t think that’ll be a problem, Beej.” Adam says, smiling at him. “It’s not like we won’t invite you back next year.”
“Oh,” he responds, and then rolls his eyes. “I mean, of course.” He amends, as if this was the most expected news in the world, giving Adam a rough pat on the back (earning a little ‘oof’ at the blow). “You’re all stuck with me. Your decision, not mine.”
Lydia makes a gagging sound on the couch. “Stuck like gum in hair, maybe,” she says, sticking her tongue out, and he grins at her, all sharp teeth.
“Stuck like a tick on a dog.”
He lunges for her and she shrieks, rolling off the couch, and after a few minutes they’ve begun tussling on the floor, amidst complaints of hair in his mouth and, “NO BITING!” shouted from Lydia.
Adam draws his wife close again, watching them. “Happy Hanukkah, Barb,” he says to her, and she leans up on her toes to kiss his cheek, resting her head against his arm.
“Happy Hanukkah, honey.”

Request for Christmas with the deetz & maitlands & bj. Like what they got each other, decorating, all that good stuff because tis the season !
Aye, it’s Christmas Eve so better now than never to answer this, amiright?
(don’t answer that)
Charles is THE ABSOLUTE WORST at shopping. Thank god for Delia, she’s a shopping demon. Black Friday is her JAM, and she did all of the holiday shopping after Thanksgiving.
(Emily was the one who always did the shopping in the family, not because he didn’t have any idea what to get them, he loves his family dearly but... Charles isn’t the most emotionally intelligent, and it really shows around this time of year. Charles said he married Delia because Lydia needed a mom, but honestly, Charles really needed a partner again.)
And speaking of demons...
Beej is absolutely confused as to what is happening around him
“Why the fuck is there a tree inside the house now???”
“Why are there fucking socks hanging over the fireplace??? Isn’t that a fire hazard?? Are you breathers T R Y I N G to go to the Netherworld again???” “Beej, we don’t have fires during the nig-” “IT’S DANGEROUS LYDIA”
“Okay, wait. I’m totally down for the fungus hanging over the doorframe... Can I eat it?”
Everyone thinks he’s just messing around until Barabra straight-up asks him if he knows it’s Christmas time. The Ghost just blinks, looks around, and you can see the dots connecting in his head.
“Ohhhhh, that’s what this is. Huh. And here I thought you guys were starting a cult without me.”
Everyone is pretty shook over that Beej doesn’t know what Christmas is. They still think he’s messing with them.
“Guys. I died over a millennia ago. I've been bouncing around between the living world and the Netherworld since then. Last time I was topside during this time of year, people were calling this Yule. ’Sides, I’m Jewish. This pagan shit is cool to get fucked up with, but I don’t keep tabs on it.”
Delia goes out and buys as many Hanukkah themed sweaters and decorations as her credit card will allow her that very same day. Barbara helps Lydia research traditional foods. Charles and Adam research how to celebrate each day.
They all surprise at sundown, when the first candle is to be lit on the Menorah. Beej is touched at the effort. He recites the prayer and lights the candle. (And if anyone sees his eyes glistening, they know better than to point it out to him.)
He hovers over the kitchen along with Barabra to help the Deetz’s with preparing meals for the rest of the holiday. He’s not exactly calm now, but he’s significantly less chaotic after the first night. (Which Charles is more than grateful for)
Barabra and Adam can’t really go out to shop, so they get Lydia and Delia to help them out!
Barbara gets Adam some new paints for his town model. Adam gets her some new vinyls she had her eyes on before she died.
Delia gets Lydia a new camera lens, as well as a travel bag to hold Lydia's camera. Lydia gets Delia some crystals (duh) and a horoscope book for the upcoming year.
Charles, after much internal debate (and some encouragement from Delia), gives Lydia a scrapbook of Emily’s writings and various works she created from when she was around her age. The book was originally a gift from Emily’s father. He gave it to Emily as a birthday gift after Lydia was born.
"I think they both knew it would find its way to you, eventually. " Charles smiles softly, eyes glistening. "Your mother would be so proud of you, Lydia. She would have want you to have this. She loved you. So much."
Lydia hugs her dad so tight, and if there are tears in both of their eyes, well, neither of them says anything about it.
They stay like that for a while. For once, nothing needs to be said between them at all.
The whole group pitches in and gets a leatherbound portfolio folder for Lydia, with her name etched onto the cover.
Beej gets Lydia some film for his camera. He gives the Maitlands some wool gloves (death is pretty chilly, after all). For the Deetz’s, he gets Delia some incense and Charles a coupon book full of favors that he can cash in for The Ghost with the Most to do at any time.
("One Mind-Blowing Threesome" is Beej's personal favorite. "One Entire Day of Peace and Quiet" and "Get Rid of Annoying House Guest" are the ones that Charles is most likely to use, tbh)
For Lydia, he gets her a locket with a rather large mirror in it.
“It’s two way, Lyds. You can summon me at any time just by saying my name, but if, for whatever reason, you can’t, just open the locket, and I’ll go completely ape shit on whatever you got yourself into this time.”
Lydia gives Beej an old phone: “It’s so we can send each other memes and tik toks. It won’t work without WiFi, but that shouldn’t be much of an issue. We can even facetime while I’m not at the house, too.”
Lydia fucking KOed him. He’s straight-up crying. Lydia has to pat his back awkwardly while Beej clutches his phone and sobs.
The Maitlands get Beej under the mistletoe and kiss him on the cheek at the same time as their Christmas present to him. Beej short-circuits and has a dopey smile on his face while it's happening. It’s a sweet moment... until he snaps out of it and tries to make out with one of them.
Charles and Delia get Beej his own space in the house. The Maitlands have the attic, and the basement is Lydia’s darkroom, but another room in the house’s only used as storage. Delia and Charles have cleared it out and have been ordering stuff off Amazon to make it a home for him. It’s mostly black and white stuff, but there are a few green and purple pieces there as well.
Aaaaaaaaand he’s crying again
It’s a good Christmas all around, my dudes 🎄🎄🎄

Beetlejuice Hanukkah Headcanons
NOTE: I tried to base characters being Jewish off of the actors while still making it my own story and exploring both perspectives. I wanted to clarify that, so you understand why I’m writing some characters as Jewish when there hasn’t been anything necessarily established in canon or fanon (as far as I know).
Additionally, I did my best to try to make it generic, specific, and universal all at the same time. There are a lot of Orthodox Jews in my extended family who we celebrate with most years, but my immediate family isn’t very religious, so I did what I could from my own experience and experiences of friends. If you come across anything that seems glaringly wrong or accidentally offensive, please feel free to let me know. That was definitely not my intent.
Finally, to go with this, here is a drawing by the wonderful @alotofbooksalittletime of Beetlejuice and Lydia at the menorah!
Tumblr media
She heard the call for Beetlejuice Hanukkah content and very kindly answered and also DELIVERED. Here is the original post of her drawing on its own, if you would like to help me spread it.
Happy Hanukkah, friends!!!
——
As the holidays approach, the group realizes they haven’t discussed how or what they’re going to celebrate
It starts with Charles, Delia, and Lydia starting to talk about it in the living room
And pretty soon, everyone else has joined in
Beetlejuice is Jewish
Barbara is Christian and Adam is Jewish, and they’ve done their best to celebrate both sets of holidays since they got together
Charles was raised in a Jewish household but he grew less religious as he got older
Emily wasn’t Jewish, but she hadn’t been very religious, either
So they celebrated major holidays with each side of the family
And they kept that going when Lydia was born, but they hadn’t really raised her in any religious practice
Delia also grew up in a Jewish family but wanted to learn about and try to experience other religions once she moved out
She especially liked Hinduism, but nothing stuck for a variety of reasons
She reconnected with Judaism after learning so many of her new family members were Jewish, and now she loves it and feels like it’s another place she belongs besides the family
So the group agrees to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah
They’re all really excited
Hanukkah is up first, but the holidays crossover this year, so they decorate the house in a mix of decorations
The tree set up in the living room has Christmas ornaments as well as Hanukkah ones they found when they went shopping
The fireplace mantel holds a menorah, a few individual candles, a stocking for each member of the family, gold tinsel wrapped around the menorah and candles, and a garland draped above the stockings
They have a lot of fun buying and cooking food
Barbara and Adam tell the group about a local bakery that they think makes the best challah bread
And Charles gets his mother’s potato latke recipe that Lydia loved as a kid
On the first night, they start by gathering around the menorah
They agreed that it was probably best to not give everyone their own menorah
Adam lights the shamash candle, then the one candle on the far right side of the menorah using the shamash, and leads everyone in the blessings
Charles and Delia find themselves reciting the words as if they’d never really forgotten
Lydia doesn’t know the blessings, but she thinks they sound beautiful
Barbara and Adam translate and explain the blessings as they sit down for dinner
Over dinner, Barbara and Adam also explain why Hanukkah is celebrated
Beetlejuice even chimes in, he’s so excited
Charles knows the story, but not well, anymore
Delia has recently relearned it, but she loves hearing it told again
And Lydia doesn’t remember much of it from when she was younger
They all enjoy hearing the story retold with so much animation
Lydia really takes to the story of the Maccabees
She finds herself connecting to the concept of a group of underdogs fighting for what they believe in even when the odds are against them
She tries not to get emotional over it, but she does, just a little bit
Naturally, as soon as the others notice, they get emotional, too
The idea of the oil in the menorah in the temple lasting eight days instead of its estimated one also seems to bring them all hope and inspiration
After dinner, they prepare to play dreidel
Before they start the game, they all have a lot of fun just spinning their dreidels
Barbara and Adam see how long they can keep theirs spinning
Beetlejuice definitely uses his powers to keep his spinning longer than possible and even spins it on his finger like a basketball at one point
Charles and Delia haven’t played with a dreidel in a long time, but they get back in the swing very quickly
Lydia has never played with one before, so it takes her a minute to get the hang of spinning her dreidel
Once she does, she and Beetlejuice try to spin their dreidels to knock each other’s over
Eventually, they go over the rules of the game and pass out dried pinto beans to use in place of money
They end up playing for a long time
Beetlejuice and Lydia suggest continuing to play with real money
The adults insist on sticking with the beans
Barbara says that while she doesn’t really enjoy making pottery, she kind of wants to try making a dreidel
(By the following week, she’ll have made one for every single one of them)
This of course prompts Adam to start singing the dreidel song
Barbara joins him, and so does Beetlejuice
Delia ends up joining and encouraging Charles to, as well
Lydia finds it very amusing
Charles doesn’t say it, but he hasn’t sung the song since he was a boy, and singing it with this new-found family makes him emotional all over again
After a few phrases, everyone is ready to stop, except for Beetlejuice and Adam
Barbara breaks out the chocolate gelt to shut them up
But of course the song is stuck in everyone’s heads for the rest of the night
And much of the next day
They had all agreed beforehand that they would exchange most of their presents at Christmas
But they exchange one gift each
When everyone has opened their presents, Beetlejuice says he has a present for everyone and disappears into the kitchen
He returns a moment later, holding a guitar
He begins to strum the guitar relatively aggressively
And he breaks out in “The Hanukkah Song” by Adam Sandler
He doesn’t get very far before everyone stops him
They can’t help cracking up, though
He’ll never admit it, but he never actually intended to sing the whole song
He just wanted to see their reactions and end the night in laughter
