The Green Flame: How to Practise Ethical Witchcraft with Confidence
Right, grab a drink, pull up a chair, and let’s have a proper chat about something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough in magical circles: ethics and boundaries. I know, I know—it’s not as flashy as moon water or as Instagrammable as your altar with its perfectly aligned crystals. But if you’re walking the witchy path—or even just curiously tiptoeing near it—this stuff is absolutely…

Your social media feeds are like an altar.
Think about it: every time you open your phone, you’re inviting energy into your space. Not just photos or updates—but emotions, projections, comparisons, chaos. And if you're not careful, that energy can linger like stagnant incense smoke in a closed room.
✨ So let’s talk about cleansing—digitally, energetically, and with intention.
If your scroll leaves you feeling anxious, irritable, or low-key hexed, that’s not just a tech problem. It’s an energetic one. Social media is a tool, and like any magical tool, it needs cleansing and boundaries to be truly helpful.
Here’s your digital detox ritual:
🔮 Follow with intention. Ask: Does this account inspire, teach, or delight me? If not, let it go.
🕯 Mute or unfollow with no guilt. Seriously. Protection magic 101—remove what no longer serves you.
🌿 Invite in more joy. Follow creators, artists, witches, and pages that feel like a breath of fresh forest air. Nourish your scroll the way you'd nourish your spirit.
📱 Set digital boundaries. Time limits, scheduled rest days, do-not-disturb hours. Make your phone less of a boss and more of a companion.
This isn’t about being less online—it’s about being more intentional. Treat your tech like a sacred object. Cleanse it. Protect your energy. Remember, your peace is not optional—it’s your protection.
💬 Do you have a ritual for cleansing your digital spaces?

⠀⠀⠀⠀hogwarts sex ed 101 . . . there wasn't one ,
ok so. sex ed at hogwarts. 1977. marauders era. the year god said 'what if i put all the bisexuals in one school and didn't teach them a single thing about genitals, boundaries, or the consequences of dry humping in a cupboard.' he did. welcome to the british wizarding education system. funded by divorce, powered by unresolved tension. narrated by emma. you're welcome for this very necessary and useful piece of information.
so. no. there wasn't sex ed at hogwarts. like. not even the ghost of it. not even a euphemism. not even a pamphlet. there was one stained copy of magical maturity and you in the infirmary and it was locked in a drawer under madam pomfrey's shame. it had illustrations. they moved. someone cursed it in '62 so now it plays low moaning sounds when you turn the pages. sirius black used to check it out "for research" and then giggle in the common room like a french exchange student who just learned the word "thrust."
you've got to understand. this was a school that thought putting a werewolf in an abandoned manor once a month and praying no one opens it was a viable health plan. sex ed??? no. they had banshee management for beginners. they had magical menses: a guide to not hexing your classmates when you're bleeding. they had one seminar on unwanted transformations during puberty but it was mostly about not turning into a beetle when you get horny. which. relatable.
the only people who talked about sex were the portraits. and they were weird about it. sir cadogan once tried to explain contraception using a metaphor involving dragon intestines and a chastity spell invented by merlin's ex. it did not clear things up. students got all their info from older cousins, contraband witch weekly issues, and the backs of chocolate frog cards where someone had scribbled "you can't get pregnant if you're on top" in green ink. wrong. so wrong.
the boys' dorm smelled like socks, and something evil. every time someone mentioned "wand length," james potter made a joke and remus lupin visibly aged five years. lily evans read the female eunuch under her duvet with a stolen wandlight and had a moral crisis every thursday. mary macdonald was the only person in the entire school who knew what a clitoris was. so she became god. people asked her questions like she was the oracle of delphi but for genitals. "mary, can you get pregnant from a bubble-head charm?" "mary, what's foreplay?" "mary, why do my pants feel weird when snape talks about potions?" (and he talked a looooot about them. subtle foreshadowing). my girl was busy. marlene was up there too but she never spoke out so she never got her own hotline.
sex was happening. everywhere. god knows it, i know it, you now know it too. in greenhouses, in empty classrooms, in the astronomy tower. it was a budget rom-com with trauma. there was a rumour that if you made out under the whomping willow at the exact moment it smacked a bird out of the air, you'd lose your virginity by osmosis. again, wrong. someone tried it. got concussed.
teachers pretended none of it existed. mcgonagall's sex talk was "don't get caught." dumbledore's was just making intense eye contact with you over a lemon drop and saying "magic is a sacred bond." slughorn had absolutely hosted orgies in the '20s. sprout once gave a lecture on pollination that made half the class cry and the other half extremely confused about flowers.
if you asked filch where babies came from, he'd say "the ministry" and limp away. if you asked peeves, he'd mime something unspeakable and then chant "one-two buckle-my-shoe, syphilis is after you!" honestly not even the worst advice.
but. like. this wasn't unique to hogwarts. this was just. britain. the 70s. everyone was either having sex or terrified of it or convinced it could be cured with chamomile tea. sirius black had a whole phase where he thought wanking made you go blind. he wore sunglasses for three weeks. refused to explain.
anyways. do not confundus your girlfriend's uterus. do not confundus anything. read a book. read two books.
also let's talk shame. catholic levels of repression. protestant levels of awkwardness. dionysian levels of impulse control. no one knew what they were doing and everyone was pretending. people said stuff like "deflowering" and meant it. they thought it was romantic. they thought love looked like sneaking into the potions dungeon and dry-humping to the sound of dripping cauldrons. they thought "i want to feel your magic inside me" was a line. it was not. it was a red flag on fire.
⠀⠀⠀so. was there sex ed at hogwarts?
no. but there was sexual miseducation. there were bad metaphors. there were prefects giving unsolicited advice in the lav.
and if you're wondering where i was in all this . . . i was that girl. i saw everything. i judged everyone. i'm dating a slytherin boy and i'm never confessing anything, even if the lord shall taketh me away no. absolutely not. expelliarmus.
i'm not saying i saved hogwarts. but i did tape an illustrated anatomy chart to the wall of the girls' bathroom and label it in four languages. i did distribute cursed zines about safe sex that moaned when opened. i did hex someone's trousers off for saying "girls don't get horny." you're welcome, feminists.
sex ed at hogwarts was me. and mary. and trauma. and bad latin. and the slow, horrible realisation that magic doesn't replace literacy.
we learned. painfully. and now i'm sharing it.

Hi, Chicken!
I hope this question won't be too basic, but I wonder how to know if I did something right - like, if I cleansed properly, or if my protection spell works. I guess if a spell is about stuff like "Some money/love/whatever would be nice, please", then I can see for myself whether it comes to me or not, but with cleansing and protection it's less obvious. Note that I'm a beginner. I think my divination/cartomancy skills are quite decent, but that's it.
Thank you for your time, have a lovely day!
You won't always be able to tell, but there are ways. Basically, build your protection and cleansing spells in such a way that when they work, something else happens to alert you to that change.
@asksecularwitch sometimes speaks of including "tells" in spellwork that indicate a spell is working as intended. The concept is the same: you have a spell give you a sign if it's working.
I usually don't assign specific tells, like, "if the protection works I'll see a speckled pigeon." I like to employ feeling. When I protect an area, does it feel safe? Do the little hairs on the back of my neck settle down?
Protection should change something about a space. This is a change you can learn to sense.
You can gain this sense with a little practice. This is where practice becomes important. You need to work with lots of little protections and cleansings to develop the sense for how they feel to be around.
You can experiment with this for yourself. Try practicing visualizations that make you feel very safe. Keenly observe yourself: how does your lived experience change when you are magically protected, versus not being protected?
You don't have to have a strong connection to your own emotional center. But what changes? Something should change.
Within a protected space, do you have less thoughts of worry, even if those thoughts are disconnected from emotion? Is it easier for you to forget about the thing you are protected against? Are you able to think about other things for longer, without being intruded upon by thoughts of the thing protected against? When you do think about that thing, are the quality of those thoughts different? Do those thoughts change from sharp and needling, to faraway and curious?
Witchcraft exists at the intersection between internal and external reality.
It is your own internal reality that provides landmarks and points of reference that allow you to see when external reality is shifting beyond its normal boundaries.
If you have not mapped the terrain of your internal reality, how will you be able to tell when subtle magic is afoot?
If you have no idea what yourself looks like when you're unprotected, then you must always rely on outside verification. If you do know what yourself looks like when you're unprotected, just watch yourself, step into a protected space, and see what changes.
If you want to get past the 101 and start figuring things out for yourself, you must know yourself.
This undertaking can be done intentionally and methodically. Knowing yourself is not an abstract notion; it is a skill that can be practiced through established techniques.
Of course, in this pursuit, it's also wise to employ protections that not only protect a thing, but make you feel safe. It's very lovely, and easy to accomplish.
When you lay down the ward, instruct it to not only protect against X, but make you feel protected.
You can tell a ward is working if you know yourself well enough to tell whether or not you are stepping into a protected space. It takes a lot of practice. There are other things you can do to test the ward itself, and your skills of warding. But if you'd like to be the sort of witch who can just tell whether or not a space is protected, that comes from self work, not spell work.
It's the same with cleansing.
What's the point in cleansing something if it feels the same both before and after?
I mean beyond just doing activities to practice, or just doing something because a spell says so.
In real life, what's the point in cleansing, if the cleansing doesn't change anything?
If an object doesn't feel "dirty" to you, then why cleanse it?
And if the cleansing didn't make it feel clean, why do it?
Cleansing should change something about a space or object, just like protection changes something about a space or object.
You can specially work with your cleansing techniques to leave an air of freshness, a metaphysical squirt of Lemon Pledge, if you will. And just like the good feelings that protection can bestow, this is a very pleasant thing to do.
Just like creating protections to know what it feels like to be protected, try understanding what it is within you that changes to reflect the difference between a cleansed and uncleansed object.
Do you feel more comfortable touching it, even if its physical cleanliness has never changed? Is it easier to look at the object, whereas before your eyes passed over it? Are you able to observe the object with a quiet mind, whereas before thoughts of distraction pulled you away from the metaphysical unpleasantness? Do you just feel differently about the object, as if its invisible grimace turned into an invisible smile?
It's nice to be able to read cards and program spells, but it's also nice to be magical yourself. Learning to sense magic is a skill, and I think it's a good one to learn.
If all that is a bit much:
An easy tarot reading to determine if a spell is working is to shuffle and draw a card until you get any pip card.
If the suit of the pip matches the type of spell, then it's a generally good omen.
If the suit of the pip doesn't match the type of the spell, it's a neutral omen.
Sit down and write out what spell type goes with what suit.
General protection spells may be pentacles or earth, for a wall or fortification.
Fiery protection that punishes or banishes may be wands or fire.
Cleansing may be cups or water.
Swords can be used as a generally bad omen for any spell outcome. Or, if you work this into a complete system, it can generally align with spells of communication and decision-making.
The edible has kicked in and no idea if I answered your question ^-^ hope this helps, though!

A witchcraft basics doc; update, resource call, interest check, and a possible second doc
Bet most of you didn't even know I was working on this >:D
Yes this is a huge post. It's a lot of things.
So, one of my first posts ever on this blog was me mentioning that a friend of mine had NO clue what they were signing up for when asking for the basics of witchcraft. The google doc I wrote took on a life of its own, and the post did as well when people started asking for it. I still plan to tag said people when I post it, assuming they haven't deactivated. The thing is, this doc had become a proper project, and it took a long time for me to have the motivation to work on it again. Now, though, it seems to me like a damn good way to reconnect to my craft after a rut! (which, by the way, is why I've been offline.)
So, my first post back is for a couple of reasons. For one, if you have any resources you'd think would be useful for beginner witches, feel free to shoot me an ask, DM, or comment/reblog on this post! I'll have a list of things I'm putting in the doc (taking recommendations there as well) at the bottom of this post.
The other thing is that I might end up making a second doc, one that's a little less "101" in vibe. It would have a MAJOR MAJOR UPG warning on it, first off, and I'm not sure whether or not I would be marking any UPG either since this would essentially be a second Grimoire/Book of Shadows for me that would be public to others for the sake of sharing information! I can't say I'd call it "advanced witchcraft" by any means, I'm not very fancy lol, but I don't want the basics doc to get too overwhelming. I do, however, want to scream about random witchcraft topics that interest me. So this is also a bit of an interest check for that, as well as the basics doc.
FINAL NOTE: I fully plan on posting this basics doc before it's done. Some sections will be unwritten or unfinished, because if I wait until I find it "finished" I'll never post it. It's going to be added onto whenever I can, but I feel as though getting it out is the best course of action.
A list of stuff in the doc that I'd take resources on (AKA everything planned in it) with * by anything that will be left unwritten/unfinished on purpose until I know more. I will take resources and recommendations on EVERYTHING though. This is in no particular order:
grounding and centering
VOCAB (intention, intuition, UPG/SPG/VPG, appropriation. probably others I'm forgetting.
candle, plant, crystals and safety* (as well as any other tools one might need safety tips for. This is left completely unwritten as I use very few tools of this type.)
deity work* (the whole debate surrounding when to start, as well as information about it. Will include smth about house rules/boundaries. My work is very casual, I'd love to see different POV's of this! This is by nature left unfinished because deity work is so unique to the witch.)
grimoire/book of shadows
tools of the craft* (common tools and how to use them consumerism in witchcraft, etc.)
cleansing
appropriation* (I don't know near enough about this, I just check what's in my own practice. I would like this to include a list of commonly appropriated closed practices, a definition of appropriation and why it shouldn't be done, open pantheons, and common open practices.)
spellwork*
meditation
where someone could go from here* (including sigils, tarot, crystals bc my friend likes rocks lol, maybe astrology but oh god I have nothing about that it makes my brain hurt just looking at an astrology chart /pos. I will probably make a list of stuff that I could add in this section.)
casual/daily/quick/low energy practices and witchcraft
paganism and witchcraft; overlap, what they are individually, why one might be for you rather than the other, etc.*
there'd be a credit section for anyone who wants to be credited for links/resources at the end! If you send me resources plz specify if you want to be included in that or not.
Things I might include in the second doc if I make it:
the craft and mental health and my experiences with it
things commonly touched on in the community (your deities don't hate you, cycles of inactivity and burnout, other things I'm forgetting rn)
deity-specific things, more specific topics of the craft, etc. yet another reminder that this would all include UPG, possibly unmarked, because it would basically be primarily used to give me motivation to research more.

What Are Oracle Cards?
Oracle cards are decks of illustrated cards used for divination, self-reflection, and spiritual guidance. Unlike tarot decks, which follow a strict structure of 78 cards with specific suits and archetypes, oracle decks are more freeform. Each one has its own theme, number of cards, and unique system of interpretation.
They can feature anything from angels to animals to affirmations, making them an accessible and intuitive tool for beginner witches and seasoned practitioners alike.
Why Use Oracle Cards in Witchcraft?
Oracle cards are a powerful and user-friendly gateway into divination. They help you connect with your intuition, spirit guides, or subconscious mind and offer clear messages for clarity, healing, and personal growth. Their flexibility and diverse themes make them ideal for tuning into your spiritual path, checking in with your energy, or even enhancing your spellwork.
For witches, oracle decks can be used to:
Reflect on daily energy or intentions
Gain insight before casting a spell or ritual
Receive messages from deities or guides
Work through emotional or spiritual blocks
Beginner Tips for Using Oracle Cards
Pick a deck that resonates. Choose artwork or a theme you connect with.
Cleanse your deck. Use smoke, moonlight, or intention before your first use.
Ask clear, open-ended questions. Instead of yes/no, try “What do I need to know about…”
Pull a card daily. Builds familiarity and strengthens your intuition.
Keep a journal. Note the card, your interpretation, and any follow-up insights.
Read the guidebook, but don’t rely on it forever. Your intuition is the main tool here.
Cautions and Ethics
Avoid “double-pulling.” Don’t keep pulling until you get the answer you want.
Don’t read for others without permission. Respect boundaries, always.
Watch for emotional overload. Some messages can feel heavy. Take time to ground afterward.
Don’t let it replace your inner knowing. Use oracle cards as guidance, not gospel.
How to Incorporate Oracle Cards into Your Practice
Morning energy check-ins with a single card.
Ask for deity or guide messages during altar time.
Draw cards to inspire spells, meditations, or journaling.
Use in rituals by placing a drawn card on your altar to focus energy.
Include them in moon or sabbat work for deeper reflection.
My Experience and Notes
Oracle cards were my entry point into divination, and they’re still one of my favorite tools. I love how adaptable and gentle they are, especially during emotional or transitional times. Some decks feel like a conversation with a mentor; others are more like chatting with a best friend. Each has its own voice and personality.
Over time, I’ve learned that my clearest readings happen when I’m calm, grounded, and open, not when I’m desperate for an answer. Trust is everything in this practice.
Anything I missed? Add some tips and more info below!
Anything you’d like for me to cover? Send me an ask or a message!

How to handle my craft being interrupted by someone who doesn’t practice it?
I’m a beginner, I don’t wanna be rude but I don’t know how to handle a non witch interrupting spell work or tarot reading. How can I do this politely
You can maybe ask them to give you space when you are doing something, or find a place where you know you can’t get interrupted (like a room with a door lock or a public empty space like an empty park)
Sometimes you might get interrupted and such. What’s important is that you keep your focus on your craft. If you find that people choose to not listen even after you have told them to stop then you can try looking for more private spaces to practice
I dont typically get interrupted as much when im practicing but I get how frustrating it can be when someone interrupts you in general. Set your boundaries with people and help yourself when you know you might be interrupted :)

Beginners Can Work With Deities ❁ཻུ۪۪ ━
‧₊˚.  : · •.  * • ˚   . · * ✶   : · •  *   ˚ ✵
As an individual who tries to actively engage with deities and seeks to maintain an ongoing connection in every feasible manner, one concept that has consistently bothered me is: "Beginners can't work with deities." While I understand the importance of guidance and experience in any spiritual journey, the complexity that comes along with the idea of working with deities and more—I firmly believe that beginners should not be discouraged from exploring and developing relationships with deities if they feel called to do so and or being pushed to do so.
A common problem I frequently observe is the spreading of fear within communities regarding certain deities. People are often told that these deities are intimidating, demanding, "horrifying," and can exhibit possessiveness, jealousy, control, or aggression. They are made to believe that skipping a day of worship or neglecting their craft will lead to negative consequences. This narrative is both harmful and completely untrue. It is filled with misinformation and promotes fear-mongering. Moreover, it wrongly restricts a deity's behaviour and portrays higher beings as something to be afraid of, rather than respecting their power and the impact that they do make. Additionally, it perpetuates the notion that the deity is flawless and incapable of making mistakes, despite numerous stories suggesting otherwise. A lot of this can be the fault of our beliefs being heavily Christianized with the "Lord and Servant" dynamic.
Working with deities is a deeply personal and individual journey. Each person's path is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. It is essential to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to connecting with the deities. By imposing a blanket statement that beginners should not work with deities, we are effectively restricting their spiritual growth and potential. We all started somewhere. We were all beginners.
I understand the concern about someone's journey and the potential involvement of a "trickster spirit." However, it's important to note that these spirits are easily recognizable, and not everyone believes in them. In fact, such encounters are quite rare! If you've been engaging with deities, symbols, or any associations connected to them, the chances of encountering a "trickster spirit" are highly unlikely. So don't believe everything you hear on TikTok or YouTube and follow your intuition. Also, keep in mind that this belief doesn't just restrict itself to deities, but it could even be with guides.
If you've done a lot of research on a deity that you feel drawn towards then go forward working with them, especially if you feel that there is a connection.
It's worth noting that working with deities is not a requirement. There are witches and pagans who choose not to incorporate deities into their practice or much rather, they may be working with something else or nothing at all. It doesn't make them less of a pagan or a witch or whatever they choose to identify as.
Tumblr media
Deity Relationships ❁ཻུ۪۪ ━
Practitioners can develop various relationships with deities, such as parent/child, teacher/student, familial, friends, or lovers (although that topic can be discussed separately). The possibilities for a person's connection with a deity are diverse and not limited to a single type of relationship.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ A healthy relationship with a deity can look like
Mutual Respect: A healthy deity relationship is built upon a foundation of respect. Both the individual and the deity should honour and acknowledge each other's boundaries, beliefs, and values. Respect entails treating the deity as a revered entity while also recognizing one's own worth and agency as an individual.
Clear Communication: Open and consistent communication is vital in a healthy deity relationship. This can involve prayers, rituals, meditation, or any other form of spiritual practice that allows for a genuine connection. Regularly engaging with the deity helps foster a deeper understanding and strengthens the bond between both parties.
Reciprocity and Offerings: Healthy deity relationships often involve an element of reciprocity. Devotees offer their devotion, time, energy, and resources as acts of love and reverence. These offerings can take various forms, such as prayers, rituals, sacrifices, donations, or acts of service. In return, devotees may receive blessings, guidance, and support from the deity.
Boundaries and Consent: Just as in any relationship, it is crucial to respect boundaries and seek consent. Devotees should be mindful of the deity's boundaries and follow established protocols or traditions. It is also important to remember that a deity has agency and can choose to engage or withdraw from the relationship at any time. Just like the devotee. Consent and boundaries foster a healthy and respectful dynamic.
Flexibility and Adaptability: A healthy deity relationship is adaptable to change and growth. As individuals evolve on their spiritual journey, their understanding, needs, and perspectives may shift. Similarly, deities may reveal different aspects of themselves or guide individuals in new directions. Flexibility and openness to these changes contribute to the health and longevity of the relationship.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ An unhealthy relationship with a deity can look like
Codependency: If the practitioner becomes overly dependent on the deity for every aspect of their life, it can indicate an unhealthy dynamic. Relying solely on the deity for decision-making, guidance, and validation without exercising personal agency and autonomy can lead to an imbalanced relationship.
Lack of Boundaries: Boundaries are essential in any relationship, including deity relationships. If the practitioner disregards their own boundaries or if the deity consistently crosses them, it can result in an unhealthy and potentially harmful connection. Boundaries should be respected and honoured by both parties involved.
Coercion or Manipulation: If the practitioner feels compelled or pressured by the deity to engage in actions or rituals against their will or moral compass, it can indicate an unhealthy dynamic. Deities should not manipulate or force practitioners into obedience or compliance.
Fear or Punitive Beliefs: If the practitioner constantly lives in fear of retribution, punishment, or wrath from the deity, it suggests an unhealthy dynamic. Deities should not be perceived as solely punitive figures, but rather as sources of guidance, support, and compassion.
Loss of Critical Thinking: When a deity relationship discourages critical thinking, questioning, or individual discernment, it can lead to a loss of personal agency and autonomy. An unhealthy dynamic may involve blind obedience or a strict adherence to dogma without room for personal growth or exploration.
Please note that the actions described may not necessarily be attributed to a deity. It could involve the practitioner or other factors at play. This example aims to illustrate an unhealthy relationship between a deity and the practitioner, rather than stating that it will definitely occur.
Tumblr media
𖤣𖥧˚ What if a Deity Doesn't Want to Work with You?
If a deity chooses not to work with you, it's important to acknowledge their prerogative. It doesn't mean you are "bad" or "evil." Similar to human relationships, not everyone can be friends, and the same applies to interactions with deities. It's acceptable for deities to decline, just as it is for you to decline to work with them. They won't punish you for your efforts, and they certainly won't punish you for saying no to working with them.

Welcome to the Woods
Hey! I'm Kyan, a queer and trans witch from Quebec. My practice is centered around local folk practices, sustainability, and herbalism. I'm also a tarot reader, fire scryer, and I'm studying to be a clinical herbalist (1st year).
I write original content about witchcraft and related topics, with an extra focus on sustainability. I try to give concrete methods and encourage folks to find ways to make their practice work for them, instead of conforming to some aesthetic or unattainable ideal. I strive to make my articles beginner-friendly, but also useful for more advanced practitioners.
I also have an Etsy shop where I sell my readings, and various witchcraft supplies and items, such as bulk herbs, sachets, and more:
I'm also the creator and co-runner of the Crossroads witchcraft Discord server for practitioners aged 23 and older. Feel free to join here: https://discord.gg/394bYvzw59
Witchcraft for me started out as a way of exploring boundaries and pushing limits. After fifteen years of practice, I've reconnected to my French Canadian roots, queerness, and all the ways the universe speaks to us. It’s incredibly difficult in today’s capitalist hellscape to carve out time for yourself and your craft, but that’s exactly why it’s so vital, and what I hope to help people navigate.
My asks are always open! I love talking about pretty much anything to do with witchcraft, nature, tarot, etc. Thanks for reading and I hope you find something you like.

Deity Worship vs Deity Work
I’ve seen a lot of confusion over these two terms in online spaces recently, and a lot of people using the two terms interchangeably even though they are two different things. Deity worship and deity work differ in several important ways.
Deity Worship
Deity worship involves honoring and following a god or multiple gods - whether they be from a pagan pantheon or not. Anyone of any skill level can worship a god, and the only thing to keep in mind when doing so is to be respectful of the god(s) in question and the culture that they come from - so long as they are not part of a closed practice that you don’t belong to, of course.
The actual act of worship can vary between practitioners and between religions, as each culture worships differently and each practitioner’s circumstances and relationship to their god(s) is different.
Deity Work
Deity work is a much more involved form of deity worship. It involves a close relationship with a deity, where the deity often offers guidance and teachings to the follower. Depending on the deity, these teachings can be relatively easy to learn or rather taxing on the follower - though it is important to note that a deity will never ask a follower to harm themselves or others, or ask anything that is out of reach of the follower or that crosses established boundaries. It might require some work to achieve, but often that work is part of the lesson itself. Discerning true messages and getting clear communication from the deity in question (rather than from other entities or your own subconscious) is also part of why this is a more advanced practice as it requires other skills to be built up first, in addition to the higher level of commitment and energy required to have that deeper relationship with them, which is why it is often not recommended for beginners.
Doing deity work can also involve invoking a deity to assist you in a magical working. This can mean them lending their strength to a spell or ritual, or sometimes guiding the working as well. As with mundane work, magically working with a deity calls upon previous skill sets as well, which again is why it often isn’t a very beginner-friendly practice.
In summary, anyone can follow and worship deities, as religion is not the same as witchcraft. In fact, many worshippers are not witches and many witches are not worshippers. Religion and the craft are separate, though they can be and often are combined. However, committing to deity work is a much more intensive process that generally requires practiced skills, which is why many people often say it is not something a beginner should get into when first starting out. However, everyone is free to do as they will, and if a new follower is drawn to deity work and wants to commit to it, there is certainly nobody stopping them!

Yeah — chances are, your energy’s wide open and you’ve picked up a few too many outside vibes. Enter the holy trinity of magical self-care: grounding, centring, and shielding.…

Boundaries are a form of protective magic—both mundane and mystical. Warding off negativity, cleansing your space, and knowing when to say “no” are all ways to protect your energy. But sometimes, the hardest part of boundary setting isn’t casting the spell—it’s enforcing it.
In witchcraft, wards and shields keep out unwanted energy, but what about the unwanted people? This is where boundaries come in. If someone pushes back when you set a limit, they weren’t respecting you to begin with. Think of your boundaries like a protective circle—only those who honor your energy can step inside.
🖤 Magical Ways to Reinforce Boundaries:
Tarot Guidance – Pull a card to ask: What boundary needs strengthening?
Pendulum Check-In – If you’re unsure whether to say yes or no, let your pendulum confirm what your intuition already knows.
Bone Reading for Signs – Some bones, like vertebrae or shells, can symbolize the need for spine and structure—a cosmic nudge to stand firm.
Sigils & Spell Jars – Create a sigil for “my boundaries are respected” and keep it in a protective charm or spell jar.
Verbal Magic – Saying “I will not be available for this” is as powerful as any banishing spell.
At the end of the day, setting boundaries isn’t about being mean—it’s about keeping your energy sacred. The strongest witches don’t just cast spells—they protect their own power.
✨ What’s your go-to way to maintain energetic boundaries? Let’s talk about it.

Tools That Move - Spirit Talk for Beginners on Their Awakening Journey
Bonus: Ghost Hunting Tools
By D., featuring W.-J. and J., G. L., starring B. and Y.
with too lively demonstrations
So - you’ve started hearing whispers, feeling the room shift when no one's entered, or catching words in your dreams that feel just a little too precise? Congratulations. You’re beginning to wake up.
And no, you can’t text your psychic, I repeat real psychic, at 3 AM every time a shadow moves on your wall. Trust me, I’ve tried. Gets expensive fast. And some of us have a sleep schedule.
We had really fun writing this not so serious "guide" with still all the important information you're probably looking for and I hope you enjoy as we did.
Here’s your gentle push:
Start keeping a journal. Write down what you experience. Even if it’s just “felt like something touched my ankle” or “grandpa’s perfume in the kitchen again.” Later, review your notes and send a summary to someone who guides you. This isn’t homework - it’s proof. Proof that your perception is shifting. That your messages are getting clearer. And every tiny step forward? Your spirit is proud of you for it.
-
I walked with W.-J. through our working room. Behind us trotted Berith, our favorite Versuchskaninchen - yes, English readers, that’s your friendly neighborhood “test subject.” He already knew what we were going to do, and somehow, he liked it. Maybe a little too much.
W.-J. scanned the shelf of polished tools, side-eyeing me like he always does when I get whimsical.
“Divination tools are like dance partners,” he said, smooth and low, making his signature finger-snap. “You’ll click with some instantly. Others will step on your toes until you both learn the rhythm. But they all teach you something.”
-
D.'s Shortlist of Spirit Communication Tools
(that won’t break your bank or your soul)
1. Pendulum - The Pocket Oracle
Always been my favorite. Small, discreet, elegant. Slips in your bag, sits in your palm, hangs from your neck like an aesthetic threat.
You can start with a Yes/No/Maybe/Rephrase board (sometimes “Maybe” and “Rephrase” are switched and there's no right and wrong how to let the pendulum swing), but soon you'll just know.
Hold it over your hand and let it swing, either for example with the little ball between two fingers or the chain hanging in between two fingers, with the ball anchoring it from free fall. Spirits get talkative once you build that bond. Choose any pendulum you like. Gift each of your spirits their own over time for example if you like. Make it fun.
2. Ouija Board - Misunderstood Queen of Drama
It moves, so it’s on this list. Yes, I said it. The dreaded, dramatic Ouija. Pop culture ruined her. Horror movies smeared her name. But really? Your passed grandmother could use it easily, even in daylight. No need to miss out your beauty sleep.
It’s not always a trickster. Just... set boundaries. Don’t treat it like game night with demons.
You can also store it in the daylight on display, surprised? There's so much misinformation out there.
Daylight doesn’t “charge” or “damage” a Ouija board unless you believe it does. Still, maybe the colours fade too soon, just like with old book covers, especially when it's red.
Alternative - The Victorian Plancette
A plancette like you know from the Ouija board, just with a pen below and rolls. It writes through spirit hand on paper. Google it, you can DIY. Leave it somewhere where no cats or other pets from the physical realms can scribble accidentally, a table in a storage room for example, check it now and then for messages.
3. Dowsing Rods - The Quiet Performers
Less talked about. Singular or paired, metal or wood. They need stillness and grace, not coffee-shaky hands.
Not everyone's vibe, but powerful when they click. You’ll need patience, but once they start pointing without you moving, you’ll feel like a real witch. Because you are.
They’re great for double-checking with a pendulum.
They don’t really work for me, I’ve got polished nails too long to hold them comfortably.
Let the rods point to where the spirit is before beginning the talk. Makes the experience more real.
Demonstration time:
I held the rods straight forward, parallel to each other - the starting position.
Then I asked Berith where he was. The rods instantly swung to my right, still parallel to each other, pointing near the heater.
“Welcome to my TED Talk. Step one: Be hot to become Tumblr’s most wanted demon. Step two: Stand near the heater,” he said, waving like a jester unveiling the stage.
And yes - it was correct. He was near the heater.
Glasya, in his winged dog form, sat next to me, covering his snout as he laughed, it was so Berith.
Crossed rods = Yes.
Rods turning outside, away from each other = No.
Start with something easy after locating your spirit, like the color of your shirt. If they get it right, move on to deeper questions.
I asked Berith if my shirt was black. The rods crossed instantly to an X, that's a clear Yes.
4. Throwables - Words of Chaos, Surprise, and Brilliance
My secret favorite and most affordable:
Wooden plates with letters
Toss them like dice. Let the spirit spell it out.
Messy genius. Try it once - you’ll be shocked how accurate it can be.
Y. appeared, this is also his favorite method. Probably also because some plates have emojis he uses often: a smiling face, a black heart.
“They say the subconscious slips in between the letters,” he purred, brushing his hair back. “But with you, darling, I’d rather just spell out your name.”
(He says stuff like this all the time. You get used to it. Sort of.)
I keep the plates in a cereal bowl that looks like a raccoon, I have a raccoon by the way. I close my eyes, grab a handful, and toss them gently on a flat surface.
Not all letters form words. Pick the ones that do.
I asked Y. what he’d like to say to our readers. The letters formed:
HI 🙂
YOU
(ALL – he added.)
Glasya cackled, watching.
“He skipped the part where he was spelling ‘DATE ME’ last night,” he said. (You were warned.)
You’ve seen throw-sticks too, right? Crossed = Yes. Straight = No.
Pretty for your feed, but dry-throwing’s more accurate.
Wood works best. Just don’t toss lit matches into your water spirit bowl all the time, unless you want a wet matches graveyard. There are other easier ways to find out if you're hexed.
Now... bones.
Duke Berith snorted. “Primitive,” he said, folding his arms. “And not very vegan.”
(He’s right. I’m nearly vegetarian.)
Bones are controversial. Some spirits dislike them, others adore them.
Ethically - not recommended unless you know what you’re doing and who you’re doing it with.
Classic Throwables: The Coin
Elegant. Ruthless.
Flip a coin and ask a question, but don’t cheapen it. The act is more than chance, it’s choice made sacred by motion. Use the same coin each time or another.
You don’t need to stop at coins, though.
Dice, jewelry, you name it.
Anything that doesn’t scream and still gives you answers can be made sacred.
Just mean it when you ask, and mean it more when you listen.
5. Cards - The Classic Court
Tarot. Lenormand. Oracle. All valid.
If you want layers and stories, go Tarot.
Lenormand’s for straight talkers. Having a manual with you all the time is totally fine, too.
Oracle is your soft launch with spirit.
Common play cards? Why not, seriously.
Choose what calls to you. Don’t force yourself into an archetype just because it’s trendy. The spirits aren’t grading you.
J. picked up a deck.
“You ever notice how they all feel different?”
I nodded. “Because they’re watching. Always.”
Berith leaned in, smiling. “Some of us just like to stir the pot.”
“Explains a lot,” J. muttered.
-
On Cleansing and Saying Goodbye
Let’s keep it simple.
Your tools are already cleansed when you SAY they are, out loud or in your head, there's no difference. Your words are spells. Spirits can hear your thoughts, too.
You don’t need a 15-step salt moonlight lavender smoke ritual unless it makes you feel good, no offense.
Saying, “My pendulum is cleansed.” is enough.
Saying goodbye is like waving to a friend as they leave your house.
It’s not that if you forget, your life is instantly cursed by vengeful spirits.
Yes, there are cases where spiritual boundaries matter, and you should stay aware.
But let’s be real: the community can be stiff. There’s too much fear-based teaching, which leads new practitioners to overthink EVERYTHING.
If you forgot to say goodbye because you had to rush out, just say it when you’re back.
For spirits who stay with you, like close friends or roommates? You can just say good night.
-
Bonus Round: Tools That Hunt – For the Brave (or the Bored)
Let’s say you’ve journaled, swung your pendulum, flirted with your Ouija, and now you're thinking:
"Okay, but what if I actually want to track them down?"
Welcome to the ghost hunter starter pack. These tools are less talky, more stalky. You're not just listening anymore - you're actively poking the veil.
1. EMF Meter - The Hype Machine
Detects electromagnetic fields. When spirits manifest, they sometimes cause spikes. This tool beeps, flashes, and makes you feel like you’re in a reality show.
Does it prove there’s a ghost? Debatable.
Does it make you feel cool? Absolutely.
Berith, now standing dramatically behind me, whispered:
“The lights are for vibes. We all love attention.”
Then he'd knock the meter off the table for flair. So helpful.
2. Spirit Box - Fast-Talk Radio Chaos
A spirit box scans radio frequencies at rapid speeds. Spirits can use snippets of the broadcast to form words. The result? Creepy, garbled messages and the occasional direct hit that makes you drop the box.
There are also variants where a spirit can chose out of an dictionary, I also tried an app where you can add words. It surprisingly worked, too.
J. once tried to argue with a spirit over one. The spirit won.
3. Thermal Camera - Ghosts but Make It Infrared
Spirits are said to leave cold spots. These cameras show heat signatures, or lack of them, visually. It’s also useful to find where your cat is hiding.
4. Motion Sensors - Boo Detection
Place them around a room. When they go off and no one's there, congrats. Something's moving. Could be a ghost. Could be your raccoon cereal pot shifting out of sheer sass.
Y. raised an eyebrow. “If it doesn’t play music and throw hearts, I’m not interested.”
Don't worry, my Prince, my readers, some do.
5. Digital Recorder - Eavesdropper Extraordinaire
Ask a question, press record, and listen back. That breath you didn’t hear? That whisper that answers your question? That’s EVP (electronic voice phenomena).
Warning: once you start hearing them, you won’t stop. They’re chatty.
Glasya chuckled darkly.
“You humans invented boxes to make us louder. How flattering.”
On Cleansing and Saying Goodbye
In ghost hunting, saying goodbye and cleansing the space is common courtesy, part respect, part “please don’t follow me home.” Not everyone does it, but many swear by it.
-
So that’s your starting point.
Tools that move, modern technology that hunts. Guides that wait. Spirits that whisper
and sometimes shout.
Try the methods. Combine them.
And remember: it doesn’t have to be expensive to work.
And more importantly: It’s not about being perfect. It’s about learning their rhythm.
"And you’re not just learning to talk to spirits," W.-J. said finally, his voice low and deliberate. "You’re learning to listen to yourself. The tools help - but it’s you they’re answering to."
Now go write down what just happened today. Yes, even if it was “pendulum hit me in the face.”
That’s a message too.
Your spirit’s watching.
And proud.
