9: What’s your dream job?

While I do like the one I have now (I work on the weekends at a Forever 21, lol), I’d really love to be a librarian after I graduate college (I want to get a Bachelor’s degree in my major, which is English)! Not only because I love reading, but because it genuinely looks fun. And when I was a kid, I always used to wonder what it’d be like to be a librarian whenever I went to my local library with my siblings and mom.

22: Nicknames people call you?

Katie Kat, K, Kitty, and occasionally, Kate (not counting Katie, which I go by to everyone). I have a lot of nicknames lmao, and they all begin with K, which I think is a pretty lucky and cool coincidence.

30: Watch the movie or read the book?

Both, tbh. And usually, I read the book, and then watch the movie/show.

I read a post by @beigebees about how to write characters with dyslexia, based on their own dyslexia. Since dyslexia can be different person to person, I thought I’d share how my dyslexia works too. Reading I really like reading, but I have tracking issues which makes it hard to find the next line. Sometimes I’ll reread the line I was just on or skip over one. I find a bookmark is a good tool to use for tracking. Also, if I read too much I get a headache and I feel sick to my stomach, which really sucks, but I’ve learned that’s something you can’t (or maybe just shouldn’t) push yourself through, no matter how good the book is. Writing I have sloppy handwriting, which I think can be attributed to my dyslexia, but maybe it’s just a me thing, I don’t know. My spelling isn’t the best either. I know people who have worse, but something I have to sound out words. Which doesn’t always work out. Some words aren’t spelled how they sound and those words are annoying. P.S. - A majority of dyslexics write with their left hand, just something to think about for your character. Speaking I forget words all the time. I will often say stuff like “can you grab the thing…the green thingy that …uhh you wear it.” (Gloves) “where are the grabby things?” (Tongs). I want to stress that I don’t do this with every word. It usually only happens when my mind is preoccupied or I’m stressed. Memory This can go either way. I like to think I have a good memory (which is how I justify not studying for tests), but it’s probably not as good as I think. I mean, I can recite the intro to Avatar: The Last Airbender no problem, but one time I asked a friend the same question three times in a half hour because I didn’t remember asking (I think this happened more than once, but I can’t remember, lol). Sense of Direction I mix up left and right sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I mix up the actual direction. Like I might have to think about if my classroom is to the left or right if you ask, but if I’m just walking, I’ll go the right way. I still use my hands a lot to figure out left vs right. Like if I’m watching tv and I’m trying to figure out if someone is using their right or left hand, I have to look at my hands, look up at the tv, find the hand that lines up with mine, then flip it. It probably sounds like the hardest way to do it, but I can’t do it any other way. Hearing I don’t notice this problem, but it’s there. I have an i.e.p. (Individualized education plan) and in it, it states I leave the classroom and get my tests read. One year, I had a math teacher convince me not to use it for her class, so I didn’t. I didn’t realize how much I was struggling until I started leaving the classroom for tests (my mom told to do it, even if the teacher didn’t like it). It was quieter and easier to focus. Sometimes you don’t notice the problem until you remove yourself from the situation. I hope this helps out anyone who plans on writing a dyslexic character. And, if you are, let me know. I can still only name four books series/tv shows with dyslexic characters and I really want to see more.
