Double Shift

You guys seem to really like the my first one so here you go another Darry one-shot. Hope y’all like it!

-You work at the local diner as a waiter/waitress, you love your job. It may not be the best one out there but you enjoy it. Better than working in a box all day. You have the usuals, the out of towners and the occasional passing through drivers. -You don’t mind picking up extra shifts if needed because it just adds to your paycheck at the end of the week. The diner is a twenty-one hour diner, someone has to be there.

-You and Darry have been going strong for a couple of years now, you both work at two time-consuming jobs. And you both will have to pull a double shift at times.

-You guys always call to tell the other you have to work the double shift.

You were leaning on the counter, sighing. You were grateful that there was a double shift so you could add more to your pay check at the end of the week but you had a really long day. “You know you don’t have to work the double? Right?” Your work friend asked looking you in the eyes with concern

They asked you this every time you took the double shift. And they looked at you with the same concerned look in their eyes.

“I know.” You said with a yawn

“Y/N. Its seven pm, the double shift runs till one in the morning. Are you sure your not going to faint due to exhaustion by then?” They said as the checked out a customer.

“I am-“ You began. “Thank you so much for coming! Have a great day.” Your work friend said with a cheery fake smile.

“What we’re you saying?” They asked, after putting the cash into the register.

“I am sure.” You said stretching and patting your friend on the back.

You headed to go take someone’s order at a booth.

“Bye, Y/N! See you tomorrow?” Your friend asked putting their coat on as they left the diner.

“Bye! For sure!” You said with a smile

They smiled back and waved as they left the diner with the jangle on the doors. Most people didn’t show up durning the night but if they did it was mostly truckers passing through. Usually one to two people work this shift, not including the “chef” in the back. Tonight it was just you. You looked at the clock, exactly eight pm, you sighed. Five more hours to go. You decided to clean up the counter a bit cause there was nothing else to do, you heard the clanging of the ”chef” in the back. You opened the closet door and grabbed cleaning spray and a old rag. And you cleaned the counter. The diner phone rang which was odd because it never does. You picked it up and said: “Hi there this is Ben’s Diner, how may I help you this evening?” You asked politely with curiosity of why this person used the phone.

It was just a customer saying that they had a huge group of teenage boys coming through and wanted to make sure we would be able to serve them. You said that y’all would try your best. ———

After working your ass off, you and chef were able to feed all six boys, which is usually easy work when it isn’t just two people working the diner. The typical amount is six to eight, depending on the day. It was around twelve in the morning, you had done some cleaning and you read a book. You don’t typical read books but there was truly nothing else to do so in preparation you had packed a book from Ponyboy’s collection in your handbag. You couldn’t wait to get home and then it hit you. You haven’t called Darry to tell him your working the double shift. And just like that, the diner doors opened, and in walked a very panicked Darry. “Y/N?!” He yelled, you swear he is going blind.

“Yes?” You asked

He saw you at the counter and speed walked over. He was breathing so heavily you’d think he just did triathlon. “Why didn’t you come home? “ He asked looking you in the eyes, his eyes looked covered in fear and panic.

You put your hand on his and said: “I took the double shift an-“ You started

“Why?” He asked madly

“I took it bec-“

“Why didn’t you call me to-��

“Let me finish. Dar.” He entangled his hand with yours using his thumb to rub the back of your hand.

“I took the double shift and I forgot to call you to tell you. I am sorry.” “That’s not what I am asking…” He said softly

“Huh? What do you mean then, Dar?” “Why do you feel the need to take the double shift?” He asked looking in your eyes with worry

“Because it adds more to my paycheck? We have been over this.” You replied

“I know. I just..” He began

“Wanted to see me.” “Yeah.” He said kissing you on the cheek. You kissed him on the lips over the cherry red and freshly cleaned diner counter. He kissed back, of course. Everytime no matter how many times, every time you kiss him, it feels like the first time. You looked at the clock on the wall It was twelve’fifty-five in the morning, and you put your forehead against his and said:

“Let get my stuff and we can go, okay? You said walking around the counter. “Okay, don’t be to long.” He said giving your hand a kiss.

i know, or at least i think, most people celebrate at 1000 followers but considering i've had this blog for nearly two years 500 followers is a big deal to me. SO to celebrate i am opening my requests. now, before you go shooting me a request please read & acknowledge the following.

RULES:

must be following me. that’s a no brainer.

first come first served basis.

i will make an announcement after i have received 10 requests that requests are closed. please DO NOT make any requests after i have closed them. they will be dismissed/deleted. so just save your request for the next celebration. AGAIN those who request off anon will be priority.

The next day after the shock wore off, you had only one thing in mind;

You had to find Billy, and lucky for you, you knew just where to start.

You took a deep breath as you pulled over in front of the building, staring at it. Even though you had never been there, internet had proven to be so helpful as always. You drummed your fingernails on the steering wheel, frowning slightly before you pushed open the door and walked to the entrance. You knocked on the front door, but when you could hear no one, you opened it.

“Hello?”

“Over here!” The familiar voice called out and you walked inside, flipping the keys in your hand before putting them into the pocket of your coat, and followed the hall that led you to a room with some chairs scattered along.

“You could’ve let him know,” he motioned at your ring, “He would’ve. But I guess we all know it wouldn’t happen, huh?”

“I don’t understand what you mean.”

“You don’t?” Curtis asked you, “Not even a clue?”

“No no, it wasn’t like that at all!” You protested, covering Billy’s mouth while basically climbing on top of him, “Besides, he punched the guy-“

“Hell yeah I punched the guy!”

“So yeah, that was how I got dumped,” You told Maria as Frank let out a laugh.

“That sure sounds fun.”

“It didn’t feel fun when I had to ice the bruises on his face.”

Curtis scoffed, “You got beaten up, huh Bill?”

“You should’ve seen the other guy.”

“No come on you two, it’s sweet,” Maria said as you leaned your head on Billy’s shoulder out of habit and he relaxed his shoulder, slipping in his seat just a little so that you could be more comfortable. “Even if he got beaten up.”

“Yeah he was just looking out for his bro.” You held up your fist so that Billy could fistbump you while Curtis looked between you,

“His bro?”

“Yeah, he once called me his bro and it stuck,” you let out a laugh, “I mean obviously right now I’m not the only one, but hey, I got used to it.”

“Oh you know, with them it’s nothing,” Billy grinned, “I just didn’t wanna hurt you, but you’re the one for me.”

“Yeah, it’s just the thrill with them?”

“Exactly, and also, you know it’s in our biology babe,”

“And it’s not what it looks like?”

“Yeah I’ve just been very stressed lately,” he continued the joke and you let out a laugh as you put your bottle down.

“Next round’s on me.”

“Y/N, come on-“

“It’s one step closer to having you as my sugar baby.” You winked at Billy who made a face,

“You wouldn’t be able to afford me.”

“What’s there not to afford, your hair products?” You asked as Frank and Curtis wolf whistled, cheering you on and Maria rolled her eyes at them, then stood up as well.

“I’ll help you,” she said as she followed you to the bar, and you ordered the drinks.

“I gotta say,” she said as she leaned back to the bar, “When Billy said she was bringing a friend, I didn’t expect it to be just a…friend.”

“Oh yeah, I know.” You grinned, “He messes around a lot, but trust me, he’d never let you guys meet one of his flings. The moment when Billy introduces a girl to you, is when you know he will marry her.”

Maria’s eyebrows rose and you hesitated, what you had said just dawning on you.

“Oh no- not me, no. I don’t count.”

“Why not?”

“We just- we grew up together.” You shook your head, “We never- we never thought about each other that way.”

“Ever?”

“No way.”

“I don’t buy it.”

“What, we haven’t-“

“I’m sure he did, even if you didn’t,” Maria said as you grabbed the beer bottles, “In fact, let’s ask.”

“What- let’s not!” You called out but she was already making her way back to the table, so you rushed after him,

“So, Bill.”

“Hm?”

“You’re bros, huh?”

“Yeah?”

“And you never saw each other romantically?” she asked, “Even when you two were younger?”

Billy shrugged slightly, “Of course not,” he said and ruffled your hair, “She’s my Skittles.”

Jesus Christ, what was this?

You were being candy-zoned now?

Curtis scoffed but hid it by taking a sip while Frank just looked amused, and you nodded.

“See?” You asked, trying to keep your voice nonchalant, “I’m gonna be his best woman at his wedding.”

“So what I read on the news-?”

“Half true, half false.” Curtis stated, “Congratulations though.”

You pursed your lips together, “Thank you,” you said and took a deep breath, “Sorry if I was being aggressive, I just-“

“Wanted to know.” Curtis finished her sentence, “Yeah. No, I know. But Y/N-“

“Were you with him? When he first found out about um…” You trailed off and held up your hand,

“He was with his girlfriend.”

Your head shot up, “He has a girlfriend?” you asked, your stomach flipping for some reason, and Curtis smiled,

“You have a fiancé.”

“He didn’t-“ you closed your eyes for a second, “And is he… Is he safe?”

“Billy’s never been into safety, you know that.”

You opened your mouth to answer, but your phone started ringing, distracting you both. You looked down at the screen, then declined the call before looking up at him.

“Curtis I-“ You ran a hand over your face, “How did that happen? That whole gang thing- it doesn’t sound like him at all.”

He looked you up and down before motioning at one of the chairs;

“Why don’t you sit down?” he asked you, “You look tired.”

“I should-“

“Your phone calls can wait,” he said, “You look like you haven’t slept for a while.”

Even if you wanted to say no, you still found yourself pulling up a chair,

“I’ve never been to war,” You shrugged slightly, “I’m not one of your… guys. No need for a sharing session.”

“Never said you were,” he said, “You just look like you need somebody to talk to, that’s all.”

You crossed your arms, casting your gaze on the floor.

“Is he okay?” You asked him again and he shot you a look,

“You saw him. Lately, right?”

“Yeah but we-“ You paused, “We couldn’t exactly…catch up.”

“He’s okay,” he said, “He’s just- it’s been rough, I’m sure you can see why.”

“Where’s he now?”

“He’s staying at a place, near his gang’s…headquarters.”

“And you approve that? His recent-hobbies?”

“Since when someone’s approval or disapproval stopped Billy?”

You slipped a little in your seat, heaving a sigh, “You got that right,” you muttered, “It’s just that- the last time we talked, I was….”

“Not yourself. Billy told me.”

You looked up, “He noticed?”

“Of course,” Curtis said, “Anything you want to tell me?”

You could feel the discomfort making its way through your system but you pushed the thoughts back.

“Oh just- stress.” You managed to say, “Nothing to worry about. I’m more worried about my criminal best friend, to be honest.”

“He’ll be fine. You know how he is.”

Your phone started ringing again and you cleared your throat,

“You got an address, or a phone number?”

“Let me guess, he was in a hurry to make a dramatic exit so he forgot to give you his phone number.”

You made a face, “Some things don’t change.” You stated, and he shook his head and scribbled down on a paper, then handed it to you.

“Tell him to be careful, will you? He listens to you.”

“I’ll try,” you muttered before you looked down at the paper, “A bar?”

“That’s where he hangs out while they’re planning their next gig.”

You folded the paper, then put it into your purse, “Thank you,” you said, “Anything else you want me to tell him?”

“Tell him to stop being a dick and answer my calls.”

“That I’ll be happy to deliver.” You said before you got up, “I’ll see you around.”

“See you around, Y/N,” he said as you walked out, then grabbed your phone and touched the name and got into the car.

He answered on the first call.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

There was no way he knew, yet you could feel the panic bubbling at the pit of your stomach.

“What?”

“About the robbery last night. You were there- what, you didn’t think I’d want to know?”

You leaned your forehead on the steering wheel, letting out a breath before raising your head.

“Carter-“

“Babe, you got attacked, you and your whole family!”

“It was nothing,” you said, “They just got the money and got out.”

“It’s all over the news!”

You shook your head, “It honestly was nothing.”

“You’re something else, Y/N….” he muttered, “Do you need me there? I know we said I’d come when I’m done here, but if you want-“

“No,” you cut him off, “No need.”

“If you’re scared, I want to be there for you.”

“I’m not scared,” you stated, and he let out a curt laugh,

“Of course not. When have you ever been scared of anything?”

You shut your eyes, feeling a headache making its way to your temples.

“I missed you,” you tried to sound sincere, but it sounded almost mechanic even to your own ears.

“I missed you too baby.”

Wow. Unlike you, he sounded sincere.

“Just grit your teeth, hm? I’ll be there soon, Italy is boring without you anyway.”

“Yeah,” you forced yourself to smile, “I love you Charming.”

Nailed it.

“Love you too baby,” he said, “I gotta go okay? Make sure to miss me more.”

“Will do.” You said and as soon as you hung up, the smile fell from your lips.

It was exhausting sometimes, honestly. Pretending that much.

“Small price to pay,” you mumbled yourself, then took a look at the address and started the car.

The bar looked exactly like you thought it would. It was small, and it was poorly lit even by bar standards. No one important, with money or with some common sense would ever walk into this place, which you guessed was the exact reason why Billy had picked it.

He had always been observant after all.

And even you knew that you didn’t look like you belonged there, not in the slightest. You took a deep breath, threw your shoulders back and walked to the group at the corner of the bar, who looked way too involved in their business to hear the sound of your heels on the old wooden floor of the bar.

“Mind if I take this chair?” you asked, keeping your eyes on Billy whose head shot up the minute he heard your voice. The other men looked at each other, some mumbling something to one another but you just crossed your arms, while Billy eyed you up and down.

“Leave us.”

“Isn’t that the chick from-“

“Leave us.” Billy repeated and just like that, they scattered along the bar. You smiled calmly as you sat down across from him, making him narrow his eyes at you.

“Well, aren’t you quite the stalker?”

“I hope you can see the irony of hearing that from you,” You shrugged as you grabbed his beer, taking a sip.

“How did you know I was here?”

“You’re not the only one who can find people, Billy.” You placed the glass on the table, “Curtis told you not to be a dick, by the way.”

“Of course he did,” he said, before turning the glass and taking a sip just from the corner with the slight smudge of your lipstick, the small gesture sending a shiver down your spine but you forced yourself to focus.

“Any reason for this visit?”

“I wanted to see where I’d leave your invitation,” you said, looking around. You had no idea why, but the anger was already spreading through you, “You can bring your plus one, by the way. When do I get to meet her?”

Billy looked taken aback for only a moment before he smirked, “Sucks, doesn’t it? Hearing it from someone else.”

You shrugged, “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” you said, “So? When?”

“Soon,” he said, as if he was enjoying this, “I think you’ll like her. It’s good, you know. Having someone who cares about you.”

And just like that, the look in your eyes sharpened,

“You did not just say that,” your voice was low, “You didn’t.”

“Why not?”

“I-you-” you tried to keep your expression stable, “You think I don’t care? This is me not caring?”

“I didn’t see you at the hospital, Skittles.”

“Fuck you Billy.”

He sucked in a breath, “Careful. People might think you’re losing your calm.”

You shut your eyes for a moment, still sitting up straight before you opened them and casted your unwavering gaze on him.

“I’m worried about you, asshole.” You told him, “That’s why I’m here. So yeah, this is me, caring about you.”

“So he’s in Italy?”

You rolled your eyes, “Billy-“

“When’s he coming?”

“Jesus Christ…” You muttered, “What’s with the gang?”

“What’s with the fiancé?”

“I asked you a question.”

“So did I,” Billy said, and you heaved a sigh.

This was the exact reason why when you and Billy had a fight, it was always terrible. Neither of you knew how to back down, but instead kept pushing and pushing stubbornly, until it got out of hand.

And it always got out of hand.

“You’re being careful, aren’t you?” you asked him, and the look in his eyes softened.

“Are you really worried?”

“No, I just like hanging around trashy bars just to see my best friend and his criminal buddies.”

He thought for a moment, “Will you tell me to stop?”

“I know you too well to know it wouldn’t work,” you said, “So no. But I want your word that you won’t get caught.”

He pulled his brows together, as if he was surprised,

“You’re serious,” he said, “You won’t tell me to stop.”

“You have your choices, I have mine.”

His dark eyes searched yours, silence falling upon you for a moment,

“What the fuck happened last year, Y/N?”

You could already feel the burning behind your eyes but you scolded yourself in your head, blinking a couple of times and making sure your face showed no emotions.

“I have your number,” you told him. “I will call you, we will meet just like the old times, and you will tell me the whole story of what happened to you.”

He heaved a deep sigh and you pushed your chair back, then stood up,

“Do you love him?” he asked you and you raised your brows.

“Make sure to pick up the phone.” You smiled at him, “Beer tastes horrible, by the way. Next time pick somewhere better.”

With that, you walked out of the bar, leaving him behind.

Au Revoir to My Heart - Billy Russo Part 5

A/N: It’s finally here! Thank you for being so patient with me!!

Though Curtis had helped you bring the boxes up you didn’t unbox anything right away. You took your time over the next few weeks unpacking your things into Billy’s place, afraid that the time he spent overseas would allow him to realize this was a mistake but the more you unpacked the more you noticed he had already moved some of his things to the side to allow room for your stuff. Ever the planner, he had clearly thought about this and made sure you knew he meant it when he handed you the key.

In the coming weeks, you started to unpack. You were growing comfort in the calming quiet that his place brought you but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t miss Billy and his witty banter, among other things.

You did what you could to keep busy, spending as much time with Lisa and Jr and reassuring them that you were here for the long hall and that there were no more short visits.

It didn't take long for Maria to noticed the distracted look you had about you though and so she invited you to accompany her when she went to buy stuff to send over to Frank.

"What do people even send over there?" You asked her as you moved down the aisle scanning the various food items as you went.

"Non-perishables, sunscreen, some basic need stuff, and maybe something from you." She replied giving you a small nudge. You knew when you agreed to this trip Billy would be brought up.

"Is it bad that I don't know what the hell he likes?" You questioned looking at her.

"If you knew that, I'd be suspicious that you guys hadn't hooked up before." She laughed, "I'll help you with what I know."

Hey, Russo,

I’m still here. You’ll be happy to know your place is feeling less cold but it’s still missing something to make it truly feel homey. It’s just missing you.

Those were the simple words you had written before slipping it into the box and sealing it up. You looked over at Maria who had a huge grin on her face.

“What?” You questioned as you handed her the tape to close her own box.

"I'm just glad to see you finally happy. Especially after all you've been through." She smiled at you. You couldn't help the smile that graced your lips.

You were glad to be able to have these moments with Maria again and this time you had nothing but time to spend with her and her family.

"I'm going to have to go out of town for a bit for the reading of the will, I'd like to take you and the kids with me." You nonchalantly said as you started writing down the address information.

She paused her motion of taping up the box and stared at you in surprise. You rarely offered to take her to your hometown, mainly because you wanted to keep her as far away from your ex as possible but now that the problems with him were over you wanted nothing more than to show her where you came from and create new memories there

That trip was about a month ago and you hadn't heard back from Billy about the package, you weren't even sure if he got it yet, so you focused even more on unpacking.

You were unpacking a box of books when you heard a knock at the door. Setting the books down on the coffee table you walked over to the door and opened it to reveal Curtis with a bag of takeout.

“I come bearing food and a helping set of hands.” He greeted with a smile.

You smiled at him as you stepped aside to allow him entrance. “Always good to see food.” You joked taking the bag from him, “Oh, and of course you too, Curtis.”

“I see you still have jokes.” He said as he walked further in, looking around at all the little changes you’ve made. "And you’ve been busy.” He commented as you shut the door.

“Not really. I still have a lot to unpack but I don’t want to feel like I’m taking over his place, it’s only temporary anyway.” You tried to reason which only made Curtis laugh.

“It’s only temporary if that how you want it to be. This,” He gestured to the shelf holding mixes of your books and Billy’s, “Isn’t something Billy does for temporary reasons, even if that’s what he told you. He’s got it for you bad.”

You gave a small nod as you tried to make room on the coffee table for the food. This had been a topic the two of you talked about frequently.

Curtis glanced around the room before he looked back at you. He gave a small smile at the idea that came to him. if you and Billy weren't going to reach out to each other, he was going to have to step in and make something happen. You two just needed a push, in the right direction.

Curtis made it to your situated comfortable eating the food that he had brought before he pulled out a small laptop from his back. You weren't paying much attention to what he was doing while you were preoccupied with your own thoughts. He had made it a habit to stop by with food and check on you and while you ate he'd work on some stuff to help his small but growing group of veterans.

It wasn't until you heard a foreign but familiar voice on the other end that you looked over to see what Curtis was doing. You were shocked to see Billy's face on the screen.

“Billy?” you voiced out in surprise.

His own eyes widen at the sound of your voice, neither of you knew what Curtis had planned.

He gave you a coy grin as he turned the laptop towards you, allowing you and Billy to see each other for the first time in months as he silently got up and headed to the kitchen.

“Hey, I..uh..got your package.” He finally said as he took in the sight of you.

“You did? Did you like it?” You asked =, your voice was filled with uncertainty.

Before Billy could answer a big hand attached itself to his shoulder and Billy was pushed to the side.

“Hey, AJ.” Frank’s voice boomed through the speaker before his face came into view. Billy clicked his tongue against his cheek in agitation and you could help but laugh.

“Hey, Frankie.” You greeted with a small wave.

“I’m just here to convey the things Billy would otherwise keep to himself. He was a real pain in the ass when he didn’t get anything from you when Maria’s first letters came in.” He conveyed to you as he kept Billy away from the screen.

“Was he now?” You asked as you raised a questioning eyebrow to both me.

“Yeah, but he was over the moon when he got that care package. Keeps the letter in his pocket with him at all times.” He said before being finally pushed away from the screen.

“Thank you for that Frankie.” Billy gave a small playful glare to him.

“Is all that true, Billy?" You gently asked as your eyes locked with his.

You wanted to know if he thought about you as much as you thought about him. You needed that type of reassurance, that this was something to him too. You needed to hear it from him.

"Yeah. Yeah, it's true." He admitted pulling put a piece of folded paper from his pocket. "Gotten me through some rough times. I...uh….I never had someone waiting back home that cared before."

His eyes fell to the paper in his one hand, tracing the letters of your name, while the other hand ran through his hair.

"Well then you better come back to me in one piece, and that's an order, Russo." You said in a mock form tone.

He looked back up, locking eyes with you once more, a smile graced his features, "Well, I've never been one to disappoint a woman." He cheekily said.

"We'll see about that when you get back home." You teased licking your lips a bit.

Before he could reply, there was another voice in the background, one you didn't know.

"I have to go," Billy announced, a little crestfallen that your time would have to be cut short.

"I'll be when you get back. Just make sure you keep that big lug safe will you, I know he can be too stubborn for his own good sometimes." You replied giving him a reassuring smile.

He smiled back in relief before give you a wink at he signed off.

You sighed closing Curtis' laptop down before leaning all the way back against the couch.

"I take it that went well?" Curtis asked stepping back into the room with a coffee in hand.

"Yeah, it did. Thanks, Curt." You said with a smile on your face.

This wasn't what you had pictured when you got up that morning but it was a welcomed change of pace.
