rafayel is in for a surprise.

he already suspected that you’re doing something fishy behind his back, especially the date in the calendar that tells him that his birthday is around the corner. a good boyfriend that he is, he will just let you do your thing.

rafayel didn’t, in fact, see this coming. 

the smooch landing on his cheek was so swift that if he didn’t know you’re standing before him, waist bent down as you put your weight to your one arm and the other retrieving a small pillow beside him — he is thinking to check himself into the mental ward, complain to the doctor there that he is having a hallucination of you kissing him randomly and so suddenly at that as he lazily sprawled to the couch, phone in hand.

you, with all your might, maintained a composed face as if you didn’t just copy one of your boyfriend’s cute antics that he is unaware makes your thoughts haywire. rafayel’s gradient stellar eyes stare wide at you, perplexing surprise swirling behind those beautiful pools as he looks up at you from the couch.

a successful cheer erupted inside your mind. satisfied with his reaction, calling forth every cell in your brain to commit his face to memory. rafayel’s reddening cheeks all the way to his ears, doe eyes round and shiny. 

turning on your back with the pillow hugged by your arms, you act like you don’t mind him and continue on your way.

to be honest, when rafayel gets whiny, begging for attention or dragging you to a spontaneous date, it awakens a dormant beast within you.

so, when it’s your turn to act cutesy around him, you’re looking forward to it.

internally, rafayel is losing his mind. whose fault is it? you, who else. what in the world have you been up to? your recent actions have become unpredictable and difficult for him to anticipate.

you're doing it again! he bit his lower lips he’s afraid blood would soon appear as you had a python grip on his arm, pouty and sulky dripping on your voice, “i want that one, win me artsy birb plushie! please? rafayel?”

“i…” where did his usual nonchalant of a bodyguard go.

he felt you get closer, “i will! i will!” rafayel maneuver the claw, his arm still pressed to your body, clinging to him. oblivious to the grin curled on your lips. the heat on his cheeks and ears hasn’t gone away, staying there much to his chagrin.  if he were to glance at the couple in the reflection of the claw machine plush’s glass, he might have not missed it.

now, onto the last one. you are not so sure how to proceed with this one. it’s not that you’re not confident to pull this move to him but rather, how to make the timing right. should it be on the day? to have better lighting? what of the place? should you hold this in the destiny cafe or at his home or yours? a date is a go-to since you can create a more romantic atmosphere so a date it is, then. you nodded to yourself.

on the other hand, rafayel’s heart will explode the more he lets you hold the reign. it's bad for his health. what will happen to linkon were their precious artist gets sick? he will blame you, really.

shit, he curses. it's late morning, brunch, unoccupied second floor with just the two of you, the muffled tappings of laptop keys below, the occasional bell ring when a customer enters and the staff greeting them, the beeping indicator of the hot water in the kitchen, the sound of beans hitting the bottom of the container, the rush of coffee cascaded in a cup.

and the warm sunlight pouring into the table where you two are sitting.

a finger lightly brushed the strands of his hair near his eyes. rafayel watches mutely. the words he has been practicing and the dramatic actions he thought last night are gone in an instant. you move away from the strays as you make eye contact with him, muttering, “there. i can see you better. don’t look down like that or you will hurt your neck.”

red bursts completely all over his face. steam coming out of his head.

“what’s the matter with you? you look like reddie.”

physical differences:

area where wings connect to their back is insanely sensitive!!

feathers falling e v e r y w h e r e

wings are big!! if the wearer hasn't had them for long, or is younger/inexperienced, they're gonna knock shit over

~birb noises~

they're actually really good singers with insane lung capacity, a lot of them are/could be opera singers

thin bones, so they're super light and even though most think it's embarrassing to be picked up so easily there's always One Dude who's like 'carry me everywhere'

smaller birds = smaller people. most wings correspond to a specific species, and hummingbird varieties are notoriously short (though never say that to their face, they will probably murder you <3)

unless the avian is a kind of waterbird (penguins, sometimes eagles) going into water will clog their wings and they could drown!! adding onto this i imagine that avians have special bathtubs and brushes and stuff so that they can properly clean their wings

on the flip side if an avian does NOT clean their wings they can get tangled or matted which a) is super painful b) could impact their flying and c) could cause sickness !!

dislocated wings >:(( this happens about as often as dislocated shoulders do with regular people. this can be caused by a couple things like blunt force, trying to manuever/twist wings in ways they aren't supposed to go, or flying too often/straining wings.

psychological differences:

preening!! it's intimate, but doesn't have to be romantic/sexual. obv there is room for very fluffy and romantic moments but it can be either way

flock!!! it's kinda like a family or a pack

the urge to Make a Nest and Only Let the Flock In

once the Flock is In the Nest then the Flock Will Not Leave Ever

molting!! old feathers fall out to allow new ones to grow in !

molting is basically the bird version of a period except all birds have it once or twice a year. they're more emotional, super sensitive, and extra clingy during molting!!

if an avian gives you one of their feathers it's basically a version of marriage, except it doesnt have to be romantic. its essentially a promise, like a 'we're with each other forever' kinda thing.

just as humans have discrimination, i imagine that avians have it too. more common species like songbirds, ravens, or crows are probably valued in society way less than those like eagles, doves, or parrots, and there could also be stereotypes against species like vultures or condors.

on wing clipping:

in my mind wing clipping is a lot like trimming your fingernails realllly sloppily, except the difference is that you should NEVER clip an avian's wings.

what i mean by fingernails is that the nails themselves don't hurt but if you do it sloppily there are Consequences: clipped too short -> irritated skin. clipped inconsistently -> sharp edges, snags on everything INCLUDING other feathers

huge violation of boundaries/self!! clipped wings -> can't fly. flying is integral to avian health and if they can't fly their mood and mental health will fall drastically.

clipped feathers take a long time to grow back, and therefore clipping has long-term effects. it also damages the feathers themselves (obviously) in ways that sometimes can't be healed

if an avian's wings are clipped their trust goes DOWN and their insecurity goes UP. its likely that if someone else tries to touch their wings they will freak out

clipped wings also make avians more jumpy and paranoid because they've lost their major way to escape/protect themselves: flying away.

angst potentials in wingfics (spoiler: there's a lot):

like i said, clipped wings -> can't fly. write about an avian's first time flying again. (not super angsty but still)

SUPER angsty: write about the actual act of wing clipping.

an avian is neglecting their wing care and tries to hide it.

relationship between a 'noble' avian (eagle, dove, etc) and a 'basic' avian (crow, raven, etc) and society's dislike of the relationship.

or maybe avians are a minority in a human world, and an avian has to hide their wings to be safe.

They’re outcasts because they’re all supernatural beings on top of the other stuff

Jane is a witch on her mothers side so people start a rumor that she cast a spell on Buddy after they find that out

Olivia is a siren and she gets accused of trying to use her siren song on Mr. Daniels

Cynthia is a werewolf which is part of the reason why she became so attached to the T-Birds since they were the only other werewolves in town (minus Richie who is also a siren but is still head of the gang)

Nancy is a vampire coming from a very old vampire family who absolutely flaunts the fact that she is a vampire

Hazel is also a witch but she never does any magic outside of her home because she’s afraid of being hated

Buddys family used to hunt creatures until they became more ingrained into their society up when his grandpa was alive but there’s still that deep hatred running through them that Buddy was the first to question

Wally’s family never hated them but they had to hide that to avoid being persecuted more than they already were so he pretends to hate them

Idk if it would take place in modern day or in the same time as canon (I’m leaning more towards modern day and the creatures being part of that sort of wave of revolution and protests in the 1900’s) but if any of y’all write a fic pls tell me cuz I’m gonna have this on my mind for a whiiile

this one is sooo heartfelt and heartwrenching and sad and good and. it just makes you feel things. the way they delicately navigate around each other. the way it all goes up in flames anyway because they can't have it any other way. the way their steps keep bringing them inevitably back together.

scar and grian start as exes, with the circumstances of their break up murky and mysterious. and scar needs help, and grian offers himself.

there's a lot of pain and guilt and weakness (because how can they help but be weak towards each other?) it's wistful and tragic and hopeful. it's. it's something. (and did i mention it's beautifully written?) (it is) (just go read it really.)

(i'll also throw this bait at you. this bit. this: Grian was the absolute most infuriating man Scar knew. It was a shame he loved him to death.)

THIS ONE. gosh where do i even begin. there are some deep, raw, self destructive feelings here. grian is a watcher in the sense that he is a creature that feeds on emotions, and he's dangerous and starving, and things have gone so very wrong. he just doesn't want to hurt anyone ever again. he's going to do everything he can to take himself out of the picture just to prevent that. (yeah this one is HEAVY.)

the writing. the writing. it's so so so beautiful. i know i keep gushing about the same thing for all of these fics, but. there's something so intricate and pretty in the way the words are woven in this one. i'm absolutelly entraced by the language. it's so pretty.

this is the hunger au if any of you are familiar with that name.

Not sure how to say this but as someone whos been desperately scraping for content of my faves and finding ways to cope with this interest, rediscovering old mob psycho fanart and fics from around 2016-2018 has always been a huge blessing and despite some of these creators not making works of it anymore I’d still like to give them a whole-hearted thank you. Speaking of wich , he will cook you the most delicious meals. He might even stand in the kitchen for HOURS for a perfect casserole or any cake you like

Why? He loves seeing you smile (and likes the praises you give him about the food)

However if he isnt in the kitchen he is there for you or helps with the house chores

(Kinda a bonus ) he doesnt favor a boy nor a girl . Hes just happy to have a kid with ya and will love it no matter the gender

I mean, if you ask the Aubreyad fandom at large(I am in a facebook group about it because I like looking at photos and paintings of ships), probably my near-complete conviction that POB wrote them with homoerotic subtext on purpose. But we're on tumblr, the homoerotic subtext website, so I really don't know! I guess not unpopular as in people dislike it, but just that there's very little discussion or fic about it, but. Diana Villiers is having an affair with Clarissa Oakes. I am fully convinced of this - it might be an entirely non-sexual affair, Guinevere and Lancelot style(which would be a fascinating thing to write, actually [makes notes]).

I totally and completely honestly cannot think of one. These fandoms so far has been very good at being Correct According To Birb™.

💛: What is a popular ship you just can't get behind, and why?

Gonna go with Hornblower here. I came into the fandom fully planning on shipping Archie and 'Ratio whole-heartedly, but I just can't quite get into a lot of it. I do fully read Archie as being in a conflicted sort of half-love with Hornblower, but I do not think Hornblower reciprocates - or if he does, he does not have any clue about it until well after Archie's death. I will go down with Hotspur Husbands and Pelhorn however. I guess also Granby/Little. I just don't know enough about Little in canon to care about him much lmao he's just Some Guy. To me. I do fully believe Granby has at least once said either "Will" or "Laurence" while they're having sex tho. Sorry, Little.

this one is mostly just brainworms and I haven't written much yet

BUT

y'know how the sages in totk all end up with the champions' weapons

y'knowww how certain weapons in zelda lore (see: master sword, demon blade, possibly others) have sentience

y'knowwwwwww how the champions barely got shit in totk (revali in particular really got shafted, he is only mentioned on the name of revali's landing and in the compendium entry for his bow and That Is Literally It. I'm not bitter or anything, I say like a liar.)

basically. the champions end up possessing the weapons to help their successors. and because I'm me and I'm soft maybe this would be a fixit fic somehow? maybe the demon king would bring them back to fight on his side (no one is happy with this)

I think my plan is to have a chapter for each sage (tulin first) and then a final wrapup one? maybe. or maybe four chapters would be enough.

Question occured to me while I was reading your Wels fic today, did Etho try to keep his gang stuff away from the birbs and Tango after they were adopted?

Or did some people in the gang get to be like 'Uncle Wels' to the kids? 😆

Etho didn't keep his gang activities a secret, no! Considering how the pesky birbs and Tango are all, unfortunately, very familiar with the dark claws of the under-city, there really was no point. Of course he shelters them from the really bad stuff until they're older, but they're all aware of what he does.

Which means yes! Uncle Wels, Auntie Cleo, and some other such folks were all apart of their lives going up! One big happy oddball family!
