#blueberry hermit crabs

(May 12, 2023) We are raising money for a crowd funded research project investigating the cause of blueberry hermit crabs in Okinawa, Japan using trash found on the beach as “homes” instead of natural shells. These hermit crabs are endemic to the southern islands of Japan, and they act as coastal environmental engineers. They are endangered on several islands, and we want to try and understand why they are resorting to beach trash for shells. Please consider sharing this post and donating to the project. We suspect that areas with high rates of tourism lead to beach combers collecting natural shells leaving nothing for the hermit crabs to use. It’s possible that overfishing of turbo snails which would naturally provide shells for the crabs may also be a factor. We will survey many sites across several islands in Okinawa to try and determine a cause of this behavior. 

We will be working closely with national geographic photographer Shawn Miller (photo credits above) and several researchers in Japan. Additionally, we will complete extensive beach clean ups in the areas we study. Thank you so much for reading!

I love how I've had the crabs for 8 years now and my mom still spells Scupa phonetically 😭

She sometimes gets bored when labeling Christmas present tags and she'll put the crabs and she always gets Gurkle right (when she remembers his name, he's been "and the other guy" a few times), easily got Speedy, but Scupa is always "Scoopa"

Which makes me think theres a knock off Scupa out there somewhere, an alternate universe maybe where his name is and always was spelt Scoopa

Headcanons: Ian Devine

Don’t know much about him either but LET’S GOOOOO

Photos of him first:

- Ian’s hair is constantly getting tangled because of the fact it’s curly. He spends more money on conditioner than anything else.

- Ian really really likes dogs. The bigger the dog the better!

- He blasts music in his house. He absolutely loves music.

- he taught himself how to play guitar. It took a while but he got through it!

- his fingers have bandages on them because the bandages make it less painful for him when playing the guitar!

- his main source of caffeine is energy drinks

- he has a collection of headphones and earphones. Ask to borrow a pair and he’ll show you his collection for you too choose.

- he wears boots most of the time. He says they look cool and are comfortable.

- he tried wearing platform boots once, and he fell down wearing them. Nonetheless he loved the platform boots.

- he loves kids. He loves He lets them braid his hair and everything. Sometimes they say they want to be able to play guitar as well as him, and he says they can do it if they try their best!

- he loves candy…ESPECIALLY SOUR CANDY. He likes sour gummy worms the best though. Don’t leave him alone in a candy shop unless you want him to buy at least three bags of candy.

- He’s pansexual.

- he likes rings. He collects rings, and one of his favourite rings looks like a guitar that has been bended around his finger!

- he tried making his own rings before. Whether he tried making them with paper, bending paper clips…He tried a lot of ways to make his own rings. Some succeeded some failed though. But that’s okay!

- he doesn’t like to admit it, but he uses skin care a lot-

- he paints his nails sometimes! And he makes little designs too (roses, skulls, etc)! He paints his daughter’s nails sometimes (in canon game he has a daughter called Izzy Ramsey, you can go search her on the criminal case wiki)

- he ate a random flower on the side of the road once for fun.

- he can dance and sing. And he’s really good at it.

- he likes sandwiches. Especially egg sandwiches.

- Tattoos. He has a lot of tattoos on his back.

- He has necklaces. A lot of necklaces. And he loves them all a lot. He will gladly lend you some to wear though!

- his favourite flavour of ice cream is chocolate. He just really likes chocolate.

- as I said he really likes chocolate. REALLY REALLY LIKES CHOCOLATE.

- he has a dark blue dream catcher in his room that was given to him by a fan and he loves it a lot.

- his closet has a lot of outfits of very fun colours. Hoodies, button up shirts, tank tops, Hawaiian shirts- he has a lot of shirts basically.

- donuts. He likes donuts. He made his own donuts once and they actually tastes good somehow-

- He can bake. He baked cookies and cakes before- but he doesn’t tell people that much until they come over or something, then he shares with them the things he baked.

- now he can cook…But sometimes with the risk of burning the kitchen down. He set the water on fire once by accident somehow too.

Ian: uh- man…I set the water on fire…

Ian’s friend: IAN HOW TF DID YOU SET THE WATER ON FIRE-?!

Turns out that wasn’t water, that was oil/grease. From that day onwards, Ian was banned from frying anything unless under supervision of someone who definitely knew how to cook.

- Ian likes the beach. He likes rolling around in the sand and jumping into the sea. He really likes it when he finds seashells too.

- Ian bought a little hermit crab at a boardwalk once and named the crab Herm. He ended researching about hermit crabs and learnt how to properly care for them.

- Ian had this giant husky as a kid. He loves this husky and would always take it on walks. The husky’s name was Oreo.

- Ian is really athletic. He can run a lot, and he likes swimming. Swimming is his favourite sport.

- Ian’s favourite fruit is blueberries.

- he actually has a good relationship with his parents. His dad was also in a rock band and was so happy to learn his son also ended up in a rock band. Ian loves his family ^^ (might be wrong but hey: Headcanons)

Ahsoka Ep. 6

The Good:

(1) The music. Holy $h1t, the flipping pipe organ when we meet Thrawn, and the chorus of stormtroopers chanting his name like cultists invoking their god.

(2) The costuming of the shipwrecked stormtroopers. Cracked helmets, greaves and vambraces tied on with strips of red cloth they must have sourced from the Nightsisters, plasteel armor components replaced with reshaped metal they must have scrounged from the ship. Also: a few stormtroopers looked like they went all kintsugi on their buckets.

(3) The derelict Chimera, creaking like a haunted house.

(4) Baylan Skul talking about Ezra being trained 'in the Wild'. Yes, my blueberry is feral, also, eff you Baylan Skul for the Bokken (re: fake???) Jedi comment.

(5) Sabine actress. I feel like they could give her better lines, but she's got the attitude of Sabine Wren downpat.

The weird:

(1) Hermit Crab aliens

(2) The possum dog. Weirdly cute. But weird.

(3) Sabine Wren as a gunslinger on the space frontier. Did not expect a Wild West insert in a Star Wars series.

The Meh:

(1) Thrawn being an over-the-top mustachio-twirling villain. My gawd. 'Red mothers, I find I have once more need of your DARK MAGIC'. Geez. Okay, we get that you're super evil. His lines weren't even this stereotypical in the cartoon, but I guess given live action costs more to produce, there are fewer episodes, and less time provided for character background and development. Thus the big flashing lights to indicate 'Thrawn Is the Bad Guy'.

Rumah yang Asing

Aku harus pindah rumah. Rumahku sudah terlalu kecil. Aku butuh rumah yang lebih besar. Di pojok pantai, kulihat banyak rumah lain. Tapi, ada yang aneh. Rumah itu kokoh tapi asing. Beragam, berwarna, dari yang amat kecil bentuknya, hingga yang amat besar.

Aku tidak punya pilihan lain. Aku harus pindah. Badanku makin besar. Rumahku makin sempit. Aku makin dewasa dan aku amat malu. Semua yang serupaku punya rumah indah yang pas. Mereka yang serupaku akan segera pindah. Aku tidak punya pilihan lain.

Yang terdekat ada di sana. Aku hanya perlu menerobos masuk ke rumah yang tang berpenghuni, lalu membawa rumah itu ke manapun aku pergi. Nampaknya aku akan aman di rumah yang asing ini. Setidaknya untuk sekarang.

Rumahku baru. Seharusnya aku segera membuat diriku nyaman dengan rumahku yang baru ini. Tapi, rumah ini amat asing. Dan, tapi, aku tidak punya pilihan lain.

Goliath was the bestest boy. The day I got him Petco had all big hermit crabs. It made me sad to think of these little bugs having lived on the beach for however long just to be killed by some kid who doesn’t know how to take care of them. So I bought the biggest one. On the way home we had to stop at the grocery store, but I decided to stay in the car because I didn’t want to leave him alone and I thought the store would be too cold. That’s when I took the first picture.

When I first got him he was really shy and would just hide in the fake coconut hut by himself. One of the other crabs started going over to him and sitting with him (earning the name David) and he slowly started hanging out with the others.

He was always very sweet, putting up with being held, and would eat blueberries out of my hand.

His favorite food was corn in any form.

He won first place in a costume contest at Petco when he dressed as Tamatoa.

He’d spend the day sitting in the hanging coconut hut and I’d make kissy faces at him and sing songs at him. He’d try to smell me through the glass.

He only chirped once. He’d come up from a molt and I was so excited to see him I picked him up to check him over and he let out one single chirp. Just enough to let me know he wanted to be put down.

I had my little bug son for more than 5 years. I’d give anything to have him back. I wish he could understand how much I love him and how much I’d worry about him whenever he’d go to molt. Honestly, I don’t know how I’m going to get up in the morning when there’s no reason to check the tank and see if he’s up yet.

Purrling is Almost Fully Stocked!

It's now been a week since I added Moby's mate, Cousteau! Both Moby and Cousteau are clownfish of the species Amphriprion ocellaris, so in the reefing hobby we tend to just call them ocellaris clownfish. (Their other common name, false percula clownfish, is kinda dumb in my opinion given that ocellaris are prettier than percula clowns.) Ocellaris clownfish come in a huuuge range of morphs, all of which were originally found in the wild.

Because they prefer to live in mated pairs and because they don't have any trouble recognizing other ocellaris regardless of their morph, I decided to have a mismatched pair. Moby is a mocha ocellaris; his morph is a slightly darker version of the usual wild type of the species of Finding Nemo fame.

Yes, he was named for the titular character of Moby Dick by my dad.

Cousteau, meanwhile, is a fancier black snowflake. Since he is the smaller of the two he will stay a male (all clownfish are born male,) while Moby will develop into a female. (That's right, folks: clownfish are trans!🏳️‍⚧️)

Cousteau is named for the father of marine biology and scuba diving, Jacques Cousteau.

Because my fish dealer didn't have any Euphillia hammer coral in stock that were of a morph I want, I also introduced Nickel the neon blue goby (yep, she is named after the IDW II Transformer's DJD's diminutive little medic, Nickel!) Nickel the fish has been shy but thankfully not as much as my yellow watchman goby Clyde who seems determined to spend her entire existence hiding in her den. Maybe she'll come out more once I give her a pistol shrimp.

The beautiful little Nickel, whose function, just like the more famous and larger bluestreak cleaner wrasse, is parasite removal from larger fish. (This kinda makes her a medic just like her namesake!)

The singular good photo that I possess of Clyde, back before my cat Keplar scared the crap out of her somehow and she decided to constantly live in her burrow.

With the addition of Cousteau Purrling Reef's population list of fish is almost complete; the final fish to acquire will be a royal gramma basslet, to be named Amphritite. I also need to get Clyde that pistol shrimp and get a purple pincushion urchin. Then, maybe, (unless I acquire a new cleaner shrimp,) I'll be done adopting ambulatory livestock. I haven't even begun adopting corals however! Here're some of the species I'm hoping to acquire:

- Genus Euphillia: Frogspawn (Yoshi's morph which is green with indigo tentacle tips)

- Genus Euphillia: Hammer (purple with turquoise tentacle tips)

- Favia (arguably not actually Favia as many favia has been reclassified): 'green' (turquoise) and purple morph

- Blastomussa merletti: purple wine morph (it's also purple and turquoise)

- Lepastrea: I'm partial to the blueberry fields morph. I also like the one called polkaroo.

- Possibly some Acans

- Maybe some Cyphastrea. I like the morphs meteor shower, bling bling, seafoam and peppermint.

- Maybe some Duncans; I don't really like duncans though.

- Hard maybe some zoanthids (I'm worried about palytoxin and mine and Keplar's stupidity in regards to sticking parts of our bodies in the water with little thought.)

In any case, things are progressing slowly but surely with Purrling Reef. I will hopefully be adding some corals next month; there's a local guy with exactly the frogspawn that I want so I might try to get a frag from him.
