The Human Mind is Truly Remarkable

We live in an age obsessed with machines artificial intelligence, robots, algorithms, and self-driving cars. And yet, every so often, something as simple as tossing your phone in the air reminds you: that nothing mankind has created comes close to the brilliance of the human brain.
Earlier today, while chatting with a mate on the phone, I found myself instinctively throwing my iPhone in the air and catching it. Over and over. Absent-mindedly. Without even thinking about it.
And then it hit me: How the hell is my brain doing this?
I wasn’t consciously focusing on catching the phone. I wasn’t calculating trajectory or distance. I wasn’t telling my fingers when to close or where to move. I was having a conversation and yet, somehow, another part of me was tracking a moving object in space, adjusting my hand’s position in real-time, compensating for motion, light, gravity, and muscle tension. All without conscious effort.
Let me tell you something: that’s not normal. At least, it shouldn't be. It’s not something we should take for granted. It’s miraculous.
A Symphony of Silent Genius
Your brain is a conductor and your body is the orchestra. Just to perform this simple task (tossing and catching a phone), dozens of brain regions coordinate perfectly:
The motor cortex activates your muscles.
The cerebellum controls timing, precision, and balance.
The visual cortex tracks the phone’s arc.
The dorsal stream predicts where the phone will land.
Proprioception (your sixth sense) tells you where your hand is in space.
Reflexes make tiny last-second adjustments.
And the best part? You don’t have to think about any of it.
You're running two separate but perfectly synchronized processes one verbal (talking to your friend) and one physical (catching your phone). And both are happening seamlessly. Your brain is splitting tasks, assigning them to different areas, prioritizing efficiently, and updating inputs constantly. That’s not just multitasking that’s a level of organic processing power no AI system has ever come close to.
We Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
As a Christian, this sort of thing only deepens my awe. You could spend your entire life studying neuroscience and still not touch the depths of how the mind works. The way the brain governs the body silently, precisely, and with effortless grace speaks of something far greater than random chance or chemical coincidence. It’s design, not chaos. Order, not noise.
And while Big Tech wants us all to marvel at the “latest breakthrough” in silicon intelligence, perhaps we ought to spend a bit more time being blown away by the carbon-based intelligence sitting between our ears.
Your mind is not just remarkable it’s sacred.
So next time you find yourself tossing your phone, catching a mug without spilling the tea, or typing a text while crossing the road without getting flattened just pause. Marvel. Respect the machinery you’ve been gifted.

As a health visitor I often visits many hospitals and clinics, during which the closer side of the connection between spine health and brain function is highly misunderstood or ignored by many patients. At Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, that connection is accepted and percolates through all levels of patient care. In this blog, I want to describe the association between spinal health and brain functioning and why that links very much with your general well-being.

The spine is the main highway of messages between the brain and body, besides being the structural backbone of the human body. The connection between spine health and brain function lies with the central nervous system that includes the brain and spinal cord. A misalignment, an injury, or any inflammation in the spine can render this communication ineffectual in respect to balance, coordination, memory, mood, and even concentration.
From my observations at Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, patients have recovered from neurological symptoms that to them appeared unrelated to” just treat spine”; that is how strong the connection between spine health and brain function really is.
During my visit to Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, I frequently noticed spinal cases that appeared to restrict the process of brain function: They were such as:
Herniation of discs
Spinal stenosis
Chronic inflammation of the spine
Degenerative disc disease
All affect blood flow and nerve signals to the brain. When issues of a spinal nature are fixed, patients say they think better and experience less mental fatigue, which is pretty good evidence of the connection between spine health and brain function.
Untreated spinal problems are more prone to producing neurological symptoms with time. At the Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, the medical fraternity recommends early diagnosis and subsequent interventions as per the need of the patient. I always urge patients not to ignore back pain or poor posture; nor should they neglect subtle symptoms like frequent headaches or dizziness, due to the close connection between spine health and brain function.

Patients themselves play an essential role in maintaining this balance. Some suggestions I give out frequently on my rounds include, maintain good posture while working or resting, exercise regularly; it is essential for muscle strength, both for the core and spinal muscles, insist on the treatment of small spinal aches and visit specialists at Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre for symptoms seen. Protecting your spine means protecting your brain, not just avoiding back pain. Remember the spine and brain linked to one another and very much so.
From a health visitor’s lens, I can confidently state that neglecting spine health can lead to far-reaching effects on brain function. Good thing that with timely and good treatment such as that from Aditya Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre, one can regain balance and vigor.

Brodmann's areas: a cytoarchitectonic map
Brodmann's areas are another essential piece in the jigsaw of our understanding of the brain.
Let's imagine the brain as a geographical map. Instead of cities and mountains, there are different regions, each with its own characteristics. These regions are called Brodmann areas.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the German neuroanatomist Korbinian Brodmann spent many hours examining the cerebral cortex under a microscope. He observed that the different regions of the cortex did not have the same cellular organisation. Some areas were rich in large neurons, others in smaller ones, and so on.
On the basis of these cytoarchitectonic differences (i.e. linked to cellular architecture), Brodmann divided the cerebral cortex into 52 distinct areas, each bearing a number.

Why are Brodmann's areas important?
Brodmann's areas are not simple anatomical divisions. They correspond to functional regions of the brain. For example :
- Brodmann area 4 corresponds to the primary motor cortex, involved in controlling voluntary movements.
- Brodmann area 17 corresponds to the primary visual cortex, where visual information is first processed.
- Brodmann 44 is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in language production.

The relationship between Brodmann areas and Penfield's homonculus
You may notice a link between Brodmann's areas and Penfield's homonculus. The homonculus is a simplified graphic representation of the areas of the motor and sensory cortex. The different parts of the body are represented disproportionately according to their functional importance.
For example, the hand, which requires very precise motor control, occupies a large area on the motor homonculus. This area largely corresponds to Brodmann's area 4. 
The limitations of Brodmann mapping
It is important to note that Brodmann mapping is a simplification. The reality is far more complex. Cerebral functions are not strictly localised in a specific area, but rather spread over networks of neurons that span several areas. What's more, the boundaries between the different areas are not always as clear-cut as you might think.
To sum up
Brodmann's areas offer an initial approach to understanding the functional organisation of the cerebral cortex. They help us to locate the different cerebral functions and to understand how the different brain regions interact with each other. However, we must not forget that the brain is a dynamic and complex organ, whose functions emerge from the interaction of millions of neurons.
