out of character post:
considering we are delving towards more face-to-face interactions with Mousetrap, I believe it is time I offer a face for the name. while they have not shared this image themself, I figure this is the best course for the sake of visualizing scenes
so, here we are;

The man who has broken the code. Alan Turing  is one of Derek’s most memorable portrayal. Emotionally intense. Turing should have been a hero of his time. He was finally a victim of Intolerance. He has contributed to save mankind. And mankind has betrayed him. What Derek did here is more than an artistic performance. It is also a personal tribute to a great man. He has highly contributed by his talent to put Turing’s work and life into light and given him the recognition that he deserved (photo : Martha Swope)

As far as portrayals of Alan Turing go, we have what I like to think of as the "Big Three" - Benedict Cumberbatch, Derek Jacobi, & Ed Stoppard. There are certainly issues with all 3 of them - limitations of the medium, script/writing issues, accuracy, etc. But I do have to say that Ed Stoppard's performance is the only one that doesn't feel like a gross charicature. Like, don't get me wrong, it's a documentary where we see relatively very little of Alan and his full life. However, it feels like a certain amount of care is brought to Alan that we don't see in the other performances.
I think a big part of this is also the writing. The dialogue that Alan has feels so much more like how he know he would actually talk. It's very funny and he is so much more open about his sexuality. The only issue that I really have, and this is in no way Ed Stoppard's fault, is that he doesn't change his voice. There is no halting speech and it's not high-pitched. Which, I understand why that would be difficult to do. Cumberbatch and Jacobi try their best but miss the mark, so I can understand how it would be better to just not try at all. But just, in general, the entire performance feels a lot more natural and playful in a way that the others don't.
I will probably write more about this topic later (I really want to make a TikTok/video series about it) but I have been thinking about this more and more. And I wanted to get this out of my head.

Breaking the Code (1996)
A biopic of Alan Turing who broke the enigma code making for more successes in WW2 and led to the invention of the computer, focusing on his personal life.
In a way this is better than the later Imitation Game (2014) biopic which had much better cinematography but had to focus much more on the technical achievements and war effort to sway the majority audience into empathising with him. This one was more realistic when reflecting the plight of chemical castration and the ‘patriotic’ government overlooked the achievements even to save him from ‘crimes’ that would later be seen as another aspect of his humanity.
There was a great deal of jumping around in time that got confusing at points, especially when the years were close together but broken up by flashbacks (or forwards). There was also little emphasis on his first love which left an impact considering he named a later prototype invention after young Chris who only appears in a couple of scenes.
More emphasis was lended to the technical explanations and passion for the mechanical than was provided by the cinema version and it felt more authentic to the person who the narrative is based upon since the strive towards machine intelligence was provably his main interest. There was also some more attention to his family which helped us identify with him.
The authority figures were largely presented as neutral but from Alan’s perspective should have allowed for some subjective license since the police at the time especially shouldn’t have been shown as any kind of decent. The gravitas was one thing that was lacking, time jumps didn’t help carry the drama from scene to scene especially since it missed out on the heavier war elements that could have lended more entertainment.
4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-
-The lead actor was nearly 16 years older when portraying Turing than when Turing died.

my excuse for reblogging this is that it's a movie review
sometimes I get so angry thinking about ‘The Imitation Game’ that I have to go in a little ‘upset big tantrum room’ in my head for a calm down
like, Benisnatch Cumberque played the same character he’s always plays as an asshole genius and we were all supposed to be okay with it, but it’s basically character slander
at different parts of the movie Turing is described as ‘arrogant, “inhuman,” “narcissistic,” and even “a monster,” in the film he goes against those around him and is shown to periodically ignore and belittle his colleagues
And. I. Am. So. Angry.
Alan Turing was described by his friends and people that knew him as “intensely shy and kindly”, he was said to “inspire loyalty and affection among those who appreciated his unusual gifts” and was “unfailingly generous with his time and expertise, especially toward younger recruits”
He was kind, he was kind, HE WAS KIND, he was kind
he was kind and geeky and awkward and gay, I don’t care if the whole of society doesn’t find that compelling, I don’t care if we don’t value kindness as an attribute in men, he deserved to be loved and respected as he was, not as we wish he was
I am so sorry Alan Turing, I am so sorry your story was not told with care and thoughtfulness, I am so sorry you didn’t get to be shown to be deeply in love with the men you loved, I am sorry your great and terrible tragedy was never unfolded as a kind and brilliant man abused by a horrible homophobic system
You are a hero that turned the tides of history like no other and I am so sorry

Headcanon that Jason goes to his grave to relax and absolutely scares the shit out of people
———
Dick: approaching Jason's headstone with flowers, and teary eyes "Hey Little Wing... I know we argued yesterday, and I—I just needed to come here like I used to. Sometimes I forget you're actually back."
The ground shifts slightly beneath him. Dick freezes.
Jason: casually pushing open his coffin lid and sitting up with bed hair and a stifled yawn "Could you keep it down? Some of us are trying to rest in peace here."
Dick: jumps backward, tripping over a nearby headstone and falling flat on his back. His scream echoes through the cemetery. "HOLY SHIT! WHAT THE ACTUAL—" clutches his chest "JASON?!"
Jason: stretching "Who were you expecting? The Joker?"
Dick: scrambling to his feet, voice cracking "WHY WERE YOU IN YOUR GRAVE?!"
Jason: climbing out and brushing dirt off his jacket "It's the only place in this godforsaken city where I can get some peace and quiet. Alfred's always cleaning at the manor, Tim's typing is incessant, and Damian—" shudders dramatically, "—exists loudly." gestures to the coffin "Memory foam. Added it last month."
Dick: still hyperventilating "That's... that's the most morbid thing I've ever heard."
Jason: shrugging "Says the guy who talks to my headstone when I'm not dead."
Dick: after a long pause "...Does Alfred know about this?"
Jason: "Who do you think brings me sandwiches?"

i wrote an interactive poem for my girlfriend in 3 parts. she said you need to read it.
go here: take only the final quiz or take all 3. i don't mind. it's sad, though. this is a poem about choice. about fate and mental illness and how love fits inside of all of it. this is a poem about a long dark hallway. mostly this is a poem about mango sushi rolls.
good luck. i love you. despite it all, i'm hopeful.
