OHHHH I have so much to say about this Actuslly

I think their trio dynamic is so unique in bsd because all of them have personal histories regarding Something (mushi's is mystery novels, poe's is ranpo, and ranpo's is his ability) and they also have strengths which force each other face these traumas head-on. poe is a mystery novel writer, and he actively encouraged mushi to overcome his fear of writing. poe had been a social recluse for 6 years, and meeting ranpo again helped him to break out of his shell little by little and focus more on the things & people around him.

ranpo prides himself on his ultra deduction, and mushi is an "infallible detective killer" whose ability counteracts that. by humbling ranpo, he forced him to come to terms with the truth that he's not an ability user, but this also strengthened his resolve to beat mushi.

overall, this is basically why i think the perfect crime trio are so great for each other. their backgrounds fit with each other's like pieces of a puzzle, so they kind of neutralise each other in a way. so i think thats very neat

Imagine bsd trios in a car together and how chaotic it’d be (these trios were chosen by specific funny things i thought of with them, i literally chose most of these at random)

Fyodor, Chuuya, and Dazai: Fyodor is the one driving because Chuuya and Dazai’s brawling would make them crash the car. That being said if they keep brawling Fyodor WILL crash them into the nearest car, he also probably has thrown them out of the car multiple times by unlocking the doors on them and pushing them out while also trying to keep the car from crashing so he doesn’t get arrested for reckless driving

Atsushi, Akutagawa, and Tanizaki: Absolutely none of them know how to drive and Tanizaki doesn’t trust either of them too so he does it. Also because he has a license. In the end they end up almost crashing and Tanizaki has to drag along Kunikida for supervision of the two feral guys he has to drive with. But also before they dragged along Kunikida yes Akutagawa did use his ability during road rage. it was not pretty. it probably caused the near crash

Ranpo, Poe, and Yosano: Yosano takes the wheel because Poe wants to work on his mystery novel while Ranpo sits in the front seat eating snacks. It’s overall a surprisingly peaceful car ride until some person honks at them too loudly and Yosano gets out of the car, does a ‘i will kill you’ motion, then gets back in the car. It then slowly turns into Ranpo restraining Yosano from killing the person who starts a shouting match and Poe writes this down for his novel probably

Kenji, Kyouka, and Gin: Gin has no clue how to drive but she manages because she has two children in the car with her. At some point Q also gets in the car. No, no one knows how Q got in there either. But when they did appear Gin screamed out of surprise and almost crashed the car, managed to save it though

Fukuzawa, Mori, and Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald fell out of the car and Mori also fell out of the car ten minutes later. Fukuzawa did not elaborate when questioned about it

i think it's well made :0! i haven't read the actual ln (yet. rip 💔) but from what i gathered it's a good adaptation!

from a directing standpoint, i think it utilizes the anime format well - the first time i watched it i was in awe from how different the tone was compared to the rest of the series, both visually and like with the music and even voice acting. also making odasaku's ability blue hurts me deep

from a writing standpoint! tldr: oof ouch owie. longer answer: it hits your emotions just right, i think.

the mystery around what ango's deal is keeps ramping up and the rate in which you figure things out along with odasaku is very well paced imo (as in, you get bits of information at the right rate, with enough space between them to digest what you just learned)

i think mimic are an interesting antagonist, and their motive is understandable imo (tho their execution of their goals is weird to me lol). the whole conflict around them feels realistic imo, both like. their origin story - war really is like that - and the way the government uses the mafia to handle them

speaking of, mori is extremely interesting there imo, and his relationship with dazai is as well. i think this whole story adds a great layer to him and helps you as a reader understand him more, and the way he chooses to approach things. and! dazai's reaction to that approach is also interesting, and highlights the difference between them which imo is important to dazai's character as well!

also i love odasaku (he was actually the first bsd character that made me go "omg blorbo alert? 😳" in my first watch hehe). like first of all he is very fun, i love the whole chill vibe autistic swag he has going on. but he's also extremely interesting; his refusal to kill, his dream of becoming a writer, his care for the orphans - and in turn, his drive for revenge, his refusal to listen to reason after the orphans die, his acceptance of his incoming death. his views of life and death as a whole are fascinating to me, i think he's one of the bsd characters with the most interesting ones tbh (along with yosano, dazai, and nikolai imo) precisely because he contains contradictions despite being so straightforward

on a meta level, i love the adaptation of the buraiha trio from friends in real life to friends in the series as well, and i think it deepens the characters' bond as well as just being a fun parallel :)

Ensemble Stars!! > Bungou Stray Dogs, Part 4

This one’s unfortunately also a bit of a doozy to explain, even though it’s smaller. beware of lore.

once again... so sorry about the formatting. this was going to be very different, as you might guess from the arrangement of character roles. i ended up not having enough characters that fit (and then realized i had extra characters in the agency and guild, but oh well)

look i don’t even want to deal with bram and all that nonsense. with regards to AUs, i usually give up around the current arc. this has to do with how i remake the narrative slightly based on the new characters and dynamics, and i can’t do that if i dont know where the actual canon narrative is going. that being said, the decay of angels are involved in a few arcs that have already wrapped up, so thats all good and fine and workable.

Eichi is an idealist. we all know this from enstars canon. everyone knows this. its the whole reason there’s a plot. it’s just that here he takes the idealism to the level of terrorism. he seeks the book out of a desire for equality, or at least that’s what he tells everyone; in fact it is a desperate and selfish quest to cheat death by rewriting his own fate. he hates his own ability and he hates this cruel world and he hates his illness and this is his way of fixing all of the above.

bonus: he has proper cello posture (i’ve seen some of y’all complain about fyodor)

Wataru is so important too. listen to me. listen closely. this whole au started because i was reading the tempest night story and could not stop making connections between wataei and fyolai. so there you have it. that’s why this AU exists. gay people. Wataru is extremely dedicated to both Eichi and his own constant performance. it is a cage of his own making.

the eccentrics had kind of an informal alliance, about 10 years before canon (to clarify: we’re going with closer to bsd ages ranges here, which means Wataru Shu and Kanata are all around 26 at the time of the main events) but what with the war, they drifted apart. the others view Wataru joining Eichi’s cause as a little bit of a betrayal.

Yuzuru... yeah he’s kind of just there. the decay of angels (a) plays up the angel motif already associated with fine and (b) is generally looking to rearrange the current social structure. Yuzuru is hoping this goal will Fix Everything and get Tori to leave the mafia. (tori is having fun lol)

Tatsumi, as a good Christian boy, is easily radicalized. He spread (admittedly hypocritical) anti-Ability teachings in Europe for a period of time, citing the war as evidence that Abilities cause ruin. He collected a decent following, who mobilized, cultlike, to go after Ability users. they captured Kaname at a certain point in time, and the mafia rescued him, which got him involved and indebted to the mafia. to try and repay this, Kaname went after the cult himself, and was killed. this made Tatsumi reevaluate his goals and join the guild. After his colleagues in the Guild were injured in the conflict, Eichi recruited him for the Decay of Angels with the promise of being rid of all his past crimes and helping

Tsumugi is the one who enables this, as his ability is the Perfect Crime: the one that erases all evidence. goddammit Eichi stop collecting people who are unhealthily devoted to you. eventual redemption arc with the mystery trio but its switch.

WHY I HATE JUJUTSU KAISEN

(Disclaimer: I've only watched the first seven episodes of jjk and haven't read the manga because it was too boring, these are just my opinions based on what I've watched please don't doxx me)

It’s EVERYWHERE. I was casually reading a bungo stray dogs light novel on wattpad for research and then BOOM, JUJUTSU KAISEN GOJO AND GETO MATCHING BRACELETS AD. I DO NOT want gojo and geto weird ship stuff, I JUST WANNA READ THE LIGHT NOVEL AND GET ON WITH MY DAY.

If I go shopping to an anime/manga centered store, Bungo Stray Dogs content? None. Death note content? Barely (with luck, a death note notebook and THAT’S IT.) Moriarty the patriot content? None. Death Parade content? None. But Jujutsu Kaisen?? EVERYWHERE. POSTERS, PLUSHIES, MANGAS, ACTION FIGURES, EVERYWHERE. The ACTUAL original mangas/animes with good stories and characters do not sell because they’re not as easily to understand or comprehend therefore they’re not as digestible as manga/animes with more simple themes.

It’s straight up boring. Same boring cliche of normal boy who overnight obtains extremely dark and magic powers + joins extremely prestigious and dangerous school/organisation + is in a trio + curses and demons. There isn't much originality on the story in itself.

The characters. Again, simple and boring cliches that can be seen repeated everywhere:

Goofy + kind of dumb main character who is insanely strong (from outside powers they got because of a strong sense of justice).

Always annoyed/moody side character who has more experience, dislikes main character.

“The girl of the group” (literally introduced as that), tragic past and such.

Mysterious and extremely powerful yet silly mentor, either acting extremely happy/laid back in front of main character(s), or really serious with other (of shared power) or when trying to “teach” main character.

Jujutsu Kaisen already has a confirmed third season even if the second one just came out in July, whilst Bungo Stray Dogs still has to catch up to the anime and make enough content to just have a sixth season (obviously it is because different studios animate them and because Jujutsu Kaisen sells much more but it still annoys me.)

The fact that Jujutsu Kaisen gets to be animated by MAPPA studios yet Bungo Stray Dogs has to be animated by Studio bones who washes down the artstyle, characters, and story.

I think that Bungo Stray Dogs (and other mangas/animes)overall has a much more creative story and characters than Jujutsu Kaisen, yet the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom is much more privileged as the content they get is quicker and done in better quality, plus they get to see their favourite manga/anime get attention and is everywhere (merch, news, awards).

It’s nominated to almost every category of the Crunchyroll anime awards whilst Bungo Stray Dogs has no nominations. And it’s for EVERYTHING. I haven’t researched yet the process of how they get nominated or if BSD doesn’t meet certain requirements to be nominated but there are definitely some categories in which it’s unfair Bungo Stray Dogs isn’t there, considering the popularity it got during July when the fifth season came out, and the amount of good things that the anime still has despite being animated by studio Bones.

I want a light novel about the Perfect Crime Trio in which they solve a case together and in which we get some insight on thier dynamic aswell as some scenes of them doing normal daily stuff together so bad.

The novel would probably be angsty af considering Mushitaro's backstory and the general pain of BSD novels but the WAN chapter with them together was already great aswell as the scenes in the manga with Ranpo and Mushitaro and Poe and Mushitaro and I want to see more of them working together.

Of course last time I said I’d never post another bsd-related post ever agin, but exceptions must be made for topics such as this.

And now onto the topic at hand.

<full disclosure- when I mention Sskk and skk here, I’m referring to the duos (in terms of teaming up to fight someone), not the ships>

OP is right. OP is so right and this is the reason for my unreasonable dislike towards Sskk.

Sskk is created to be the “next generation” of skk. That’s the first noticeable flaw. The age gap between Mori/Fukuzawa and skk is what.., 20 years, give or take? The age gap between skk and Sskk is 2-4 years. That’s not a “next generation”, that’s just taking your coworkers who are around your age and saying “heyyy I really don’t feel like working, can you cover for me?” The point of a “next generation” is that when one generation goes into retirement, there’ll still be a strong duo protecting Yokohama. But by the time skk will be too old to get anything done, chances are so will Sskk. So that’s reason number 1 that Sskk does not serve its purpose.

Reason number 2 is, as OP said, it doesn’t follow the previous two duos brain/brawn rule. It’s double brawn. Neither Atsushi nor Akutagawa are strategists in any sense. Chuuuya’s arguably more of a strategist than them, considering he understands the way other strategists (ie Dazai) think, to an extent.

But wait. There actually is a brain among us in Sskk. And it’s Dazai’s. Unlike Mori/Fukuzawa and skk, Sskk often has direct interference and guidance from Dazai. While they were out beating up the virus ability guy, Dazai was out apprehending Fyodor. Prior to that he was with them, directing them on an outline of what to do. The role of Sskk here seems to be a role Chuuya could have easily filled. (And the virus needs two hosts, right? I may be mis-remembering this, but what would have happened if only one person would have gone in to fight the virus dude?) Regardless. It seems like the sort of role Chuuya could have easily filled, but Dazai’s having the duo he created himself try their hand at filling that role.

And on the topic of Chuuya, where is he anyway? I don’t mean in the virus arc, I know he was on a mandatory Ranpo-enforced vacation in a mystery novel. But where is Chuuya in establishing Sskk? It makes sense that only Mori and not Fukuzawa established skk, because Fukuzawa didn’t know or have anything to do with Dazai or Chuuya. But with Sskk, Akutagawa is Chuuya’s subordinate, and additionally he clearly respects him. For Dazai to intentionally make sure Chuuya has no involvement.., it would make you question why. Why would Chuuya intentionally be left out of the formation of the new and improved duo that’s supposed to take over from the duo he was once a part of.

Point is Sskk isn’t “the next generation” or “stronger skk”. It’s skk minus Chuuya, replacing him with two ability users who don’t even come close to his complete strength, considering he’s a literal god.

The fallacy lies in the fact that Sskk is a duo, when it’s actually a trio. Dazai fills the role of not only the mentor, but the brains to Atsushi and Akutagawa’s brawn. Dazai never left skk, he simply pushed Chuuya out of it by replacing him with two people who don’t even remotely amount to what he’s capable of.

Dazai KNOWS that Akutagawa is actively dying of some lung disease.

Dazai KNOWS that Atsushi can only control his ability with the help of Fukuzawa, ie someone a whole generation older than Dazai himself.

So that whole “oh this is the next generation of soukoku :)” thing? Yeah Dazai KNOWS that both parties involved  will only be able to be part of it for a short period of time. So. Dazai. What’s up with that, anyway?
