Hey I know you’ve probably already been asked this but what type of chemistry do you use for breaking bread like biochem and where did you learn this or have any book recommendations to pick it up? Also ty in advance I love your writing!!💕💕

oh my fucking god. oh my god. buddy. buddy you have made my fucking LIFE ASKING THIS OH GOD

So like, most of the chemistry I've used so far has just been Genchem and O Chem(with a wee few modifications to make it believable as a Cybertronian discipline, like Transformium being able to hold 4 bonds like Carbon but preferentially forming bonds w metals and needing an EMP pulse to interact w more electronegative atoms) I may wind up needing to get into a bit of Inorganic chemistry, but that's probably fewer and further in between. If you want a better handle on the stuff I'm writing or if you just want to learn more in general, then I'd recommend giving yourself a lil crash course in Genchem and then delving into O chem a bit more extensively (protip : you need WAY less Genchem then you'd think to fully understand O chem. God I wish someone had told me this 5 years ago. If you search "Genchem for non majors", you'll probably learn enough that way.)

THAT SAID : here's a chaotic, not really in any order list of the books/youtube channels/etc that I've directly used/am using for this fic.

Books :

Caveman Chemistry, Kevin R Dunn - Alot of hands-on old timey historical chemistry lessons w detailed instructions on how to complete them.(YOU GET TO MAKE YOUR OWN ASPIRIN AND DRAIN CLEANER!) Delivered with a delightfully occult bend.

Back To basics,(Reader's Digest) - Survivalist homesteading bible. Not strictly chemistry but has alot of earthy hippy ways of generating energy( biofuels my beloved)

An Introduction to Fire Dynamics, Dougal Drysdale - Honestly this, and any other firefighting manuals are worth their weight in gold for figuring out how to not set yourself and your neighborhood on fire while playing with, well, fire. Trying to look this info up online is like playing russian roulette with intentional misinformation and your fbi guy.

(there's another book I have that's even more detailed but I can't find it right now or remember the name. I'll update this list when I can!)

Organic Chemistry, John Mcmurray 8th edition : generic but good college O chem textbook. You can search around and find free versions to download relatively easily.

The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual, James W Zubrick - Also a very good way to learn how to not set yourself and your neighborhood on fire when playing with glassware/gases. Very in-depth instructions on setting up and using lab equipment without breaking anything or your brain. Has a fuckton of pictures. Author has a massive sense of humor and makes this heavy subject easy to read. Again, easy to download/find in archives

Unfortunately I do not have any recommendations for Genchem books. I mostly used free online courses like Khan Academy to learn what I did.(I would def. recommend them though)

The Organic Chemistry Tutor : Dude puts everything from reaction mechanisms to retrosynth problems down in the simplest possible terms. Does not beat around the bush with euphemisms or stories, gets right to business. If you have trouble paying attention, or lose your mind when a professor goes off on a tangent, this man is your savior. I have crippling unmedicated ADHD and no STEM background whatesoever and this man still managed to teach me 2 separate ways to execute a Gabriel Synthesis

Nile Red : World's most inefficient and most powerful wizard. I am not entirely convinced he's human. Does shit like turning plastic gloves into drinkable grape soda or making sweeteners out of his own piss and somehow makes it explainable to trash goblins like me who only need the science for warlord pussy.

I think that the 2010's media landscape of Buzzfeed articles about plotholes in disney movies, Cinemasins critiques, and Watchmojo Top Ten scenes in movies that make no sense has truely ruined a lot of media. People are afraid that their work will be torn down if they dare leave a single thing up in the air, if they dare ask their audience to suspend their disbelief.

All too often nowadays I see stories (especially fantasy), take the time to explain how every small aspect of the world works and how it all logically makes sense. The constant time stopped to explain why an event happened, how this object works, or why this is important to the characters. It's just really not needed and it honestly makes a lot of stories worse.

I am of the opinion that the best stories truly just drop you into their world and explain nothing. They just take you through the story of this world and you just have to accept it and continue on. "When he became king, the land became barren." I don't want the story to stop and explain why this is, or how it happened, I want us to move on so we can just assume that the king has such rancid vibes that everything died.

#simon says #i watched the Last Unicorn again recently and it fucking slaps #and I noticed a huge part of why it slapped is because it doesn't explain shit #same with a lot of other fantasy things from the 70's and 80's I've noticed #and even older stories all the way back to fairy tales and fables #they just tell you something and move on #and it works!#a lot of the time it feels far too hand-holdy or immersion breaking for the characters to stop and explain something for the audience #like these characters would not take the time to explain the aspects of their world in detail to other people who live in this world #this is clearly for the audience only and so that they can feel more satisfied with an answer #but it fucking sucks!!#it is bad writing!!#to presume your audience has no suspension of disbelief so you stop everything to explain how the world works for them alone is bad!#it makes the story feel awkward because it feels out of character for the people of the world to talk like that and it feels insulting tbh #like you really think the audience's ability to pick up details of the world from dialog and onscreen (or page) information is that poor??#and to some extent it is #lord knows we are having a serious media literacy and general literacy issue in the United States #but it's honestly just bad writing and it bugs me so much. my number 1 pet peeve in fantasy is overexplaining especially when it doesn't fit #like just fucking tell me that there's a magical world on the other side of this wall in a village and move on #i can just accept this fact #imagine if the Dark Crystal took the time to explain every aspect of the world #that movie is already jam packed with random story and world bits that you just have to accept and move on from #now imagine if they took a solid 2 minutes to explain what the fuck Fizzgig is.#i think leaving it at 'he's a friendly monster and Kira's friend!' is the perfect place to leave it at #we do not need a full explanation on Fizzgig's species and behavior and why he's friendly unlike other monsters #he's a friendly monster and he's Kira's friend! that's all we need to know! we got a dark crystal to put back together!!!

im on vacation how can i make this about the murder time trio. mtt fresh out of a flight and the minute that they leave the airport dust stops horror and killer for the smoke break. because being around a smoker is like that. and while horror is dying and coughing from the cigarette smoke and killer is pretend coughing to make dust feel terrible theyre both simultaneously roasting the shit out of dust for being such an addict smoker. cancer speedrun GO says horror. refreshing his signature smell says killer. dust just glares at them and blows smoke in their face (horror literally takes damage he's at 0.7 HP)

#killer ended up liking that btw. he later asked for dust to extinguish the cig on him. freak #this is absolutely based on my own personal experience #only a person who knows a smoker knows how annoying it is when they take smoke breaks everywhere #car rides are TAINTED by dust having to smoke. eating out is interrupted because dust gets up every 15 minutes to smoke #his bones are a dusty color but not because of the dust but because the smoke has turned them gray from the inside out #i'll need to figure out the right time to post this but the mtt grind never stops even while inter nations ‼️‼️‼️#i MUST relate every single thing i do to the mtt. a similar situation just happened to me like 15 minutes ago #im in germany oui oui or something idk #i cannot wait to come up with a bunch of travel related mtt headcanons this is gonna be so fun #the only fun i'll have during this trip is the imaginary characters in the head i sound delusional #delusional??? like like like horror sans. like like dust sans. is killer delusional. probably idk #update on horror character analysis: i finished some of it on the flight but smh #UNFORTUNATELY i have a human body so i needed to sleep so thats 4 hours wasted on NOT mttmaxxing #and it turns out i REALLY shouldve pre translated time to go mad so i could localize it on a flight with no internet #yeah i didn't think that one through. but at least i got parts of the analysis done WITH NO MUSIC. im a god #since Mad Time Series was so eye opening and fun to translate i cant WAIT to see what Time to Go Mad will be like #calvateyla after being canon dusttale's lord and savior. even after not posting on ask dusttale for years they still manage to surprise me #i almost lost my apple pencil during the flight i swear i was tweaking out #how can i connect this to the mtt #how can i make EVERYTHING about the murder time trio #3 is my favorite number. taking a little break from writing for a few days to cool down the brain but first... yaad&thistle au fic preview under the cut. this is clocking in at 12k atm, i haven't finished drafting all the scenes yet, but i am deeply enjoying this one.

SUMMERTIME!!! sat on my porch on this warm night listening to joni mitchell helen reddy & paul simon (official soundtrack for all summer nights) in my double denim with a can of a&w and finished my semester's research over my traditional finals week dinner (ethiopian food from my fave restaurant in the city)
