perhaps my hottest take yet but there's this very interesting phenomenon within fanworks, especially modern aus, where people make lan wangji like. The Crazy Smart Bookish Nerd, when in canon his Thing, his character archetype, isn't even that he's smart or clever. that's wei wuxians thing. HE'S the genius. and lan wangji obviously isn't an idiot, wangxians whole dynamic is that they're equally matched, but the narrative puts weight on wei wuxians intelligence where it does not with lan wangjis. lan wangjis thing Is being noble, and it Is valuing tradition, and it Is being talented, and, in the beginning, it Is following the rules. he's a good student as a child and an incredibly skilled cultivator, but the role his character plays in terms of trope is not one that focuses on his intellect, even when the story makes it clear that hes very smart. and the thing is that him being a rule follower in the cloud recesses arc Does make him a good student, and the story successfully communicates that he Is smart, but the focus is on him being a competent cultivator who is "good at school", the point is the way that working within the systems rules leads to success, Not that he's smart
but wei wuxians role in a strictly narrative context Does hinge on him being incredibly clever and intelligent, it's a key part of his character archetype, and there is a point being made about the fact that, even when he's a troublemaker in class and labeled as a bad student, he's very intelligent. it's one of the many things that frustrates but draws lan wangji to him in the first place. but somehow more often than not fanon depicts wei wuxian as a fumbling idiot. and I just think it's very interesting that rule following and "good behavior" gets associated with intelligence, where rebellion and disregard for social expectations is associated with being foolish or ignorant, when the narrative of the source material is communicating almost the opposite idea

on the topic of princely bakugou—
i love the idea of his hand in marriage being the peace offering between your kingdom and his clan, as in he comes to live with you and rule in your castle. and he genuinely wants to do a good job; he's not coming in and tearing down the walls or defiling shrines or anything like that, because that would be the easiest way to lose good graces with his new realm.
the thing that i love the most about this is him being so barbaric, raised in a completely different way from you, taught to value different things and rule a different way—and yet he's sitting with his council (half of which are appointed men that swear loyalty to the realm regardless of who rules, and the other half being men he specifically chose and trusts) dressed in his furs and boots, scars out for all to see, and he's carefully trying to read letters and documents and negotiations, like a civil man would.
and it's not that he's changing anything about himself; he is firmly, to the core, always going to be a wild little barbarian pup—but he's grown enough to know the difference between respect and surrender. to know that he will be nothing without the support of the people, and to lose that after fighting so hard for it would be foolish.
he's very different than you expected, than you were ever taught to expect; your shared bed is too soft for him and he tosses and turns all night and gets up before the sun rises; he cooks, and you've found him fiddling around in the kitchen on more than one occasion; he values your opinion on a multitude of matters, and speaks to you more about politics than your father ever did.
you were told that he'd ravage you in the dirt, dripping sweat and the blood of your people, but—he hasn't laid a hand on you, hardly speaks to you unless it's absolutely necessary. you can almost feel it, though, sitting in his throat when you're across from him at the dinner table, or when he sits at the edge of the bed and looks back at you over his shoulder.
everything he does is so careful, thought out, and you think he might be doing the same with you, too. not barging in or breaking down doors, but waiting, patiently, for you to open up your heart to him.

OMG intersex Moonpaw with a cleft lip???
I just used it as an example because cleft lips and palates are a really good example of the quirks of bilateral symmetry, BUT I do actually have a cleft lip in BB LMAO
It's Lizardstripe because she got a glow up in BB, is one of the smartest and most competent background characters in the rewrite, and has an expanded friendship with both Bluestar and Yellowfang. I gave her a cleft lip because unironically it is such a cool feature and it deserves a million examples of positivity.
Her son Deerfoot also got it, he also got a glowup as a TigerClan rebel.
I should give it to more cats honestly... and more lip features in general. I love you people whose lips naturally curl above the teeth. I love you people with cleft lips, both severe and minor. I love you people who have had mouth surgery and have visible scars.

This is one of my favourite images from the credits of Eternal Diva:
Tumblr media
When we first meet Amelia, she acts cold and distant. She isn't interested in helping others and even chastises Luke on the boat. Some might assume she's rude or stuck up.
Tumblr media
But when she is kidnapped by Descole, we see her cold facade crack. Her grandfather is dying and she wants to give the Eternal Life to him. Amelia literally entered a game where she herself could die so she wouldn't lose her grandfather. In that moment we suddenly see who she really is: a scared child who would do anything for her loved ones.
Tumblr media
However, during the credits we see this image. It shows that Amelia's grandfather has indeed passed away. There is a chess piece next to his grave, suggesting that he was the one to teach her the game.
Tumblr media
But Amelia isn't sad. She's smiling, probably thinking of the good memories they had together. Maybe watching Janice say goodbye to Melina made her realise that she will never lose him, as long as she remembers him.
It's a bittersweet, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but it helps add closure to Amelia's character.
But the other reason why I love the image is Layton and Luke in the background.
Tumblr media
"Uhhhhhh. Why are we here Professor? We barely know this girl."
"Because Luke; a true gentleman must always attend to the needs of a lady. Even when he doesn't remember her name."

Hot take: I actually love Edgar's constant flirting with every lady he meets because it's hilarious, and he isn't just objectifying them physically, and he isn't a dick about being rejected, and half the time when he flirts with Celes or Terra it feels like he's teasing after it's clear they're not interested, and-

imagine: professor utonium mentoring dexter vs professor membrane mentoring mandark
#dexter & mandark are the only two kids in their district to qualify for some young scholar program & arr bussed off to take classes from#their assigned mentor once or twice a week.#dexter is at odds with himself about it at first. on one hand he's glad that his intelligence is finally being appreciated & nurtured in#some official capacity. let alone by a mind as lauded as the creator of the powerpuff girls. but on the other hand he would prefer to just#move on up to taking college courses entirely rather than have to go through this half measure. & he also gets a little disillusioned with#utonium when he realizes 1) that pretty much everything utonium is famous for was invented by accident including the ppg#& 2) outside of the ppg utonium hasn't achieved much more than dexter himself already has#meanwhile mandark practically kisses the ground that membrane walks on because he's so glad someone in his life recognize's his potential#& membrane sort of sees mandark as the son he wishes dib could be. he's never very open or affectionate about it though because y'know.#it's membrane#he never talks about his kids & sees them so rarely that mandark didn't even realize he had children of his own until like 3½ months into it#whereas utonium cannot shut up about his girls. nor would dexter want him to since they seem to be the most interesting thing about the man#utonium realizes pretty quickly that dexter doesn't need academic guidance so much as he needs social interaction with 1) people who won't#bully or belittle him for being who he is & 2) children his own age. so he starts subtlety encouraging his daughters to meet & befriend him.#I imagine that they come to visit him during his office hours regularly anyways so this happens pretty naturally.#also I think that even though utonium & membrane would definitely respect one another & collaborate well in a professional sense they don't#really mesh personality wise. utonium finds membrane to be far too cold & callous.#membrane thinks that utonium is basically a baby man who doesn't hold himself the way an accomplished man of science should.#ppg#powerpuff girls#the powerpuff girls#dexter's laboratory#dexter's lab#invader zim#headcanon#au#professor utonium#professor membrane#dexter mcpherson#(why is that his fanon last name again? where did that come from)

#Doodles#SCII#Helix#The Captain#ZEX#Forgive the quality lol I wanted to make them pretty but then- Well you know lol#Dandelions <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3#You know it's bad when you start getting excited about the most mundane little signifiers <3#Dandelions deserve way more love than they get anyway it all balances out#I just hghh it's such a simple setup but there's a lot of feelings that can be expanded upon!#Like would Zelnick know about dandelions cultural ties?? He grew up on Unzervalt - unless someone brought some with them!#Or explained it I guess - but also Unzervaltians seem like scrappy underdogs sprouting up in the sidewalk cracks to defy the Ur-Quan too#Feels like it would actually mean a lot to him if he knew their symbolism!#But even if he didn't - they're Earth Flora! A piece of his home that /should/ just be mundane and everyday and not a big deal but it is!!#I legit teared up at Zelnick appreciating a blue atmosphere ah <3#He loves Earth so much wah <3 The naturalistic storytelling in his internal monologue are genuinely So Good#And then y'already know I love ZEX gifting him flowers lol I really do need to finish that one comic I posted the preview of it's cute!#Any little way that he engages with human courtship is The Cutest to me <3 Trying so hard to impress his love!#Trying so hard to cross that cultural gap agh it gets me bad! Seeing humans as more than just pretty somethings to be enjoyed at a distance#ZEX's pride also gets me bad hehe but I really love when he uses his intelligence to try to relate and understand#See humans as complex individuals both personally and in different cultures! He gets so distracted so easily hehe silly ♪#Also I don't know if I have anywhere else that it'd come up but agh gods his and Zelnick's conversation about the eventual fallout of ZEX's#kidnap attempt - Literally The Best like ugh!! ♥ I /tried/ to write something half that exact and eloquent and it's just right there! Gah!!#S'beautiful s'so good fjdslafd I'm love I'm love

we talk about how juwon is both smart AND stupid somehow but i think a better way to say this is that he is book smart but street stupid.
hyuk directly calls him out on it when he tells juwon that dongsik will always run circles around him because unlike our boy dongsik didn't learn about the world from a textbook, he has firsthand experience dealing with people. and hyuk is so right because then juwon goes and tries to emulate dongsik and fucks up tremendously.
he graduated top of his class and that is completely in line with his character. single minded, obsessive memorization of text to the point that he knows it by heart, he is known to do that. but past the point of graduation we have no indication that juwon was a particularly outstanding detective. like he is a big time crime solving cop in seoul city, sure but he's also a nepo baby and his father definitely influenced his position. i don't even mean directly, just people trying to get on han kihwan's good side by treating his son well (i imagine they kept a lot of what they thought about juwon and his shining personality to themselves too)
so juwon is fresh out of the academy, he's top student, he's never been told off much, if at all. he has a very high opinion of himself. thing is: he knows the law well, he's quick thinking and determined but he's also extremely stubborn, unsociable and impulsive, so frankly i don't think he was a very fun person to work with and therefore not a very good employee. i can imagine heated fights and frustration of his colleagues whenever they disagreed on something. i think he was hyper aware and fed up with people's opinion of him in that 'i'm not a bad detective, everyone just gets in my way and if only they listened to me, we wouldn't be having these problems' type of way. he then proceeds to get obsessed with a certain case, goes completely rogue with no oversight and supervision, no doubt thinking that he's going to nail this and he'll show them and they're all gonna be sooo impressed and well.. we all know how that one ends.
he's so set on being right that he sees no alternative. and even when he turns out to be wrong again and again, it takes a painful amount of time for him to have an epiphany. his belief that he's the smartest person in the room comes from arrogance and entitlement and his arrogance and entitlement come from his rigid belief that if he's such a smart boy with good grades then he cannot be wrong because then what does that degree even mean, what does it all mean, who am i -> identity crisis. that's why he can't admit at first that his father is a criminal who doesn't play by the rules because then juwon's an idiot who's followed them for no reason expecting entire world to do the same. that's why he keeps running to dongsik with clues and flimsy proof expecting him to turn himself in like they're in scooby doo and dongsik's gonna go 'ahh you got me' as juwon takes off his mask. when you solve a mathematical problem you don't expect the numbers to suddenly leap up and change around or tell you to fuck off. juwon's main arc is seeing the grey between the black and white but it's also realising that humans are much more complex than a theoretical exercise and sometimes the solution is to set the textbook on fire.

Nakano being portrayed as a clumsy idiot in the anime really sucks because he’s really more than that.
If anything I realized that for someone with such dumb luck, he is actually quite dexterous!
I mean, him saving Akiyama from Tanaka in a spur of the moment and then getting away quickly. Even Tanaka had to comment on how fast he was!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His entire suit encounter. He was dodging multiple shots and skilled hit men chasing him down and if that’s not badass idk what is. Sure he looked a bit clumsy as he did so, but he was doing it. And he still managed to try to keep Hirasawa safe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His chase with Kei also shows how quick he thinks, though it’s not always right. But I think what mostly threw him off with the Kei fight was his hesitation. Tbf that would throw anyone off tho lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then BOTH car chases where he managed to get them where needed even with cop cars chasing or crowds of people around
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His skill is literally running away but he’s too stubborn to do so completely from the fight. He keeps pushing forward and yk I love him for that.

The only correct Waylon Jones characterization is him being an ardent supporter of human rights, with focus on Black Lives Matter, homeless people, prisoners and people with criminal records and abused children, even as he commits gruesome murders. Especially as he commits gruesome murders.

me: oh wow an ffxiv theory/meta post! i love these even when i don't agree with them. i wonder if this person will highlight an underdiscussed aspect of the setting, or reframe someone's characterization interestingly the post: "in the original japanese--" me: unsubscribed. blocked. reported. hie thee hence and never darken my door again.
#ffxiv#it's written in tokyo! we are talking about people who if they had a translation question could *walk down the hall and ask the writer*#it's not the english version's fault that you're a coward who's afraid of subtext and subtler characterization#even if it was intended as direct translation 99% of you lack the japanese fluency to appreciate any degree of nuance#and you frankly clearly can't appreciate nuance in english to begin with! so how could you know if it's conveyed correctly.#my favorite example is haurchefant. a lot of people complain about him being 'toned down' in english#which 1) he is. it's culturally necessary. if EN haurchefant talked about your sweat and offered you a 'warm bed' he'd be loathed#he'd come off as sexually aggressive towards women and as bad mlm rep. fans would DESPISE him.#different audiences have different values. he has to be written slightly differently to land in the same way he does in the original.#2) no he's really not. like sure the text of his lines gets toned down. but he's still absurdly into you. he's still a weirdo thrillseeker#there's still SHIRTLESS MEN WORKING OUT IN HIS OFFICE LOL#a lot of people complain that the english version is too aggressive or people are too mean and it's like...these are different contexts#like there's sooo many alisaie lines where people are like 'she's more of a cute tsundere in jp she's mean in english' and like.#alisaie is 100% an american tsundere in english. the localization team just knows how tsundere archetypes come off in english#which is to say straightforward tsundere shit tends to scan in english as either incredibly childish or cumbrained nonsense#and they have in turn written her with just a slightly lighter hand and more culturally intelligibly in english#she's a teenage girl who covers her sensitivity and inability to stop caring by putting on an abrasive front. that's a tsundere#alisaie is sort of an insane feat of localization. new levels of technology previously unheard of#'alisaie is like my badass wlw little sister' okay...yes. let's go with that. please ignore the ass shots in the trailers.
