What Your Favourite Sonic Ship Says About You! (Part 1)

(Sonamy, Sonadow, Sonally) FULL DISCLAIMER: Shipping is a hot topic of debate, but this post is lighthearted fun! I'm a multi-shipper, I love most of these ships - and I can see why some people like the dynamics that I might not. This is not a bashing post, this is fun time. So, without further ado- Sonamy

You appreciate the simpler things in life. You decided to ship the protagonist with the main girl character just like 90% of all media writers, it's just what you're comfortable with. In terms of fanfiction tropes, do you happen to enjoy childhood sweethearts, meet-cutes, soulmates - that type of thing? I just had a feeling... Either way, you're just here for the cute vibes and the pining - and who can blame you? You probably really liked the fact that when you first came across the ship that it was the girl of the pair being the one so forward with her romantic feelings. But as time has gone on - you're either one of those people that really miss that side of Amy, or you're one of those that are so dang grateful they've toned her down. Either way, it's safe to say that this is one of the most vanilla of Sonic ships - and that's not an insult, vanilla is a good ice cream flavour. But no one is really going to fight you on your opinion other than the 5% of remaining toxic Sonally shippers, and those people that are somehow still living in the Sonic Heroes era. Sonadow

You saw that Sonic and Shadow's rivalry has been going on for far longer than 7 years, so it must be gay - and honestly, I can't fault your logic. You're a sucker for two disasters who can't express their feelings, and you have just determined that fighting is simply their love language. Even with Shadow's limited screen time in Prime, you suck every single dang crumb you're given like a vacuum. And by the way, you definitely have an Ao3 account - don't try and hide it. We already know you're a sucker for enemies/rivals to lovers... and I'd also wager you enjoy just-one-bed. Also you like that thing where characters constantly call each other by a nickname, and only end up calling them by their actual name during a confession scene or when one of the characters is seriously injured. I dunno, just had a hunch you'd like that sort of thing. You are debating between two sides of yourself - part of you wants Shadow's old characterization back where he was a more in-depth character and showed Sonic more respect, but part of you also loves how so damn obsessive Shadow is in modern games over Sonic and how much he wants to fight him - because that at least implies that Sonic is on Shadow's mind literally most of the time. But when all is said and done, this is vanilla when it comes to gay ships in the Sonic community. It's too damn easy, it's why it's the most popular Sonic ship on Tumblr. Opposites attract is your go-to, and it's been tried and tested - the formula works, I see it. You strike me as the person who really cares about canon material, and you tend to steer away from a lot of fanon. I also have a strong feeling you're a Sonic fan that's on the older side, back when SatAM and Archie were at their peak and considerably more popular. It's a ship with all the things you need to be happy - the characters have a deep, long-lasting bond, it's a sweet ship, and the two have constrasting personalities - so it doesn't get stale for you. You're probably into similar tropes as the Sonamy shippers - but you enjoy more drama and spice to your fanfics, and you won't shy away from angst - Archie loved its angst, I know you enjoyed that shit. You're either content with all the Sonally content you've gotten over the years, and will occassionally look at fanarts. Or you're one of those people who will not let the Archie comics go, you are still in denial - you are begging for Sally's return into the series and you're hoping now that Ian Flynn is writing for the games, that your dreams might just become a reality.

1 - character that everyone gets wrong

JAY FERIN. she is not a girlboss your honor. she's definitely a victim of 'only female character in a cast' syndrome where people seem to think she's the most competent by default. I won't deny she's smart and capable, but most of that girls confidence is 100% a front. she's got ISSUES. she talked to her grandma once and had a panic attack. she spent half the show spying on the crew trying to find who killed her sister. she's mean to those she loves because she doesn't know how to express affection otherwise. how VASTLY different fanon is between websites. tumblr is a lawless land. anyone can kiss anyone. I've seen art of gillion as transmasc pre-top surgery with tits OUT. everything goes. there's no one designated fanon you can do basically whatever. Twitter seems to have one designated fanon and it gets kinda boring LMAO like there's rarely any experimentation with characters races or designs over there. which is bold coming from me whose only ever drawn based on the designs but u can't find Jewish jay ferin over there ok they're BORING

God okay. the feywild arc of riptide has a frog npc names Felipe. at one point, a deck of many cards gets involved, and Felipe gets cursed to hate Gillion to the point of wanting him dead. and like. listen. I know what happened Felipe was their fault. I am fully aware everything that occurred was because of the crew. however I HATE THAT GODDAMN FROG. WHY DID THEY KEEP HIM AROUND. HE WANTED GIL DEAD. Do you really see BakuCamie happening? I have always seen Bakugou been one of the very few students to not get a lover, they’ve only interacted like for a very small amount of times in the manga/anime I just don’t see it being built upon to believe they fell in love somehow with little interaction on what their relationship is like! I do like the ship though

I'll start this off with--I don't really care if it happens or not, so there is no real investment in me thinking this will be endgame for him. If I'm wrong then, again, I don't care.

BUT I'll explain my thinking:

All of the endgame couples are fairly obvious in 1A--except for Bakugo. Because there is no girl character within 1A that has any meaningful interactions with him, none. None in 1B either.

Bakugo as a character is an outlier in a lot of ways. No endgame pairing within his class. He is the second-most main kid character and he doesn't have a villain. He is a part of the savior squad, but doesn't have a villain to save. Within the group of kid characters his arc is entirely unique in comparison to the rest of them. So it isn't surprising that he's not obviously paired up with anyone in the front range cast.

Next, I think you need to lower your standards, honestly. Look at the obvious endgame couples and tell me if there is any real serious development for them. Look at the main endgame couple and tell me just how well that couple is developed. Yes, significantly more than the Bakugo ship in question, but they are the main characters and their romance is BARELY anymore developed than background/very irrelevant characters like Ojiro and Tooru.

So, while I agree with what you're saying, it's not the greatest argument against the likelihood because, well, *gestures toward the rest of the manga*.

Next, BNHA is as shounen and as typical as it gets. I'm sorry but it's very much the type of manga to pair everyone off into their little straight ships at the end, no matter how developed or undeveloped they are (not trying to discount anyone's headcanons about the characters, I'm just trying to make a point).

I simply don't see an ending where the two main guys standing next to Bakugo have endgame ships and Bakugo--the secondary main character and series' most popular character--just, doesn't. Would I complain if that's how it ended? Nah, not really. But I'm thinking more of the genre and demographic for this manga and, well, just the general expectations these cheesy, fun, corny stories usually adhere to.

Lastly, Camie IS the only other girl character who has had direct interactions with him that stuck out in his arc. They were very short-lived but they were humorous and unique from how other characters interact with him. Those interactions were also during an arc where Bakugo really had to do some self-reflecting, like it was an important arc for both him and Shouto. She also made him laugh by turning into Glamoroki. Again, the bar is on the floor here, just a reminder.

Honestly I'm just waiting for the Shiketsu kids to return to the screen--because it's obvious that they will. Once they do and we see what's done with them, I feel like that'll sway me one way or another whether I fully am convinced it'll happen or not.

So my thinking is that, damn the standards are very low and yes, I am pretty convinced that this could very well be his endgame. I don't see the manga booting him from the implied romance at the end, as much as I really would hope to not have to see it and really just get a fast forward panel or something (like in FMA). But this is coming from someone who has no attachment to any ship for Bakugo at all, so I can pretty much look at it un-skewed, or about as un-skewed as it can get.

I do think that no matter who Bakugo ends up with, there will be rioting. Simply because of the amount of fanon ships he is in and how feral those fan bases are. I predict insufferable chaos no matter what happens honestly.

I'm gonna try to get my thoughts in order for this Larmina whump, I'm starting with her first because she's so whumpable it's crazy

This is kinda going to be a timeline of whump ig, that's the easiest way to explain everything I have for this pathetic little girl <3 Read more under the cut

Starting off stating this all this is fanon here, I like to think Larmina got to the team while the war was still happening. I don't see her as blood related to Allura any more than Allura and Romelle are, especially because I hc Larmina to be Polluxian

Maybe Pollux started having a war of its own so being royalty/nobility would place Larmina in a real bad spot, so she was sent off to Allura likely because Romelle had a hand into where she would go for protection Even though she isn't super related to Allura she is still considered to be an heir because after she got to the castle she was the only other royal there to take the throne in case Allura died

So now she's in a new place, still being attacked at least weekly, she doesn't know anybody, doesn't and/or can barely understand the language being spoken, and is now in line for the throne she was never supposed to take in the first place As she grows up, the war finishes, she is still seen as next in line for the throne, but now Allura can take up being queen. Except her royal studies keep going, they get more intensive and still prepare her for taking the throne. The throne that Princess Allura, the princess who crawled out of an underground tunnel like a rat, helped rebuild her left for dead planet and freed the universe from the enslavement and rule of the Drule Empire, still holds.

So yeah no pressure, just trying to fit in the shadow of a living legend (ty @duladear for reminding me that she's an heir and absolutely would have problems with it), but she made friends with the pilots and was doing well even if Coran decided to isolate her like he did Allura because she refused to marry if it wasn't for love, so Larmina was still next in line, in case that day never came. What came instead were her only friends, her family really, leaving her in the dust, alone and confused as to why she wasn't told a thing. She was closest to Pidge, he trained her to be a ninja which bonded them closer and was near his age, so she saw him like a favorite cousin or an older brother that'd make fun of her relentlessly but protect her no matter what. He was always truthful to her and never hid information because he knew the feeling of being left in the dark. Except he did just that when Wade took over, and she didn't even know why. Now she truly was alone in a castle where not even her aunt would come help her, being too busy fixing that broken planet they were on.

That's when she started her attitude change, she was always intense and stubborn, but now it was turned full blast. She found what she liked and stuck to it, changed her wardrobe to get as far as possible from what really felt like her destiny, sitting on a throne too big for her, always to be compared to her aunt and never being good enough to show she was different. Now a new war came, and new friends, she finally interacted with people her age and she was coming out of her metal shell and forced isolation. Her family came back too and everyone was so different, Pidge had changed radically, and she couldn't even see her favorite person in him now. So she pushed them all away because she was different too, and she was tired of taking orders that didn't involve her choosing what she wanted to do.

She thought she wanted to be on the voltron force, to fight for her adoptive planet, to do some good with her own two hands. Except she didn't even like the damn lions, she hated the flying, she hated the teamwork, and the cockpits only set off her claustrophobia which messed her up even more. Sometimes she thinks if she's really at home with Arus, or if going back to her war ridden planet of Pollux would be better because she'd finally do what she wanted, and maybe find the parents she felt had abandoned her with no reason why

Bangel, Spuffy, and Cordoyle for the ship ask game!!

Bangel

1.) What Made You Ship It?

When I first watched Buffy, I was a teenager and in that target audience range.  I liked Tortall’s Alanna/George and other feminist fantasy ships where the younger woman falls for a more mature guy.  Bangel was the biggest of the age-gaps, but the same appeal was there that the other ships had.  Mainly that I assumed some day I was gonna have romantic feelings of my own and I really did not like the idea of being attracted to guys my own age because the guys that were interested in me seemed to think fart jokes were the epitome of humor, the guys who weren’t interested in me were guys I wasn’t interested in either.  And the guys who were my friends would just be weird to date ‘cause... it just would be.

I... would have really liked to know what aromantic meant at that age, I think.

But anyway, there was kind of a fairy tale, first guy wins feeling for Buffy and Angel and even though I’ve grown to be more critical of their relationship as seen through an adult lens... I still have a fondness for the ship as it seemed when I first saw the show.  Angel discovering his true purpose from his love of Buffy and Buffy having to learn the hard lesson that love does not always win the day.  But in the time they had together, they grew to become better, stronger people.  And not even being apart made their love any less.

2.) What Are Your Favorite Things About the Ship?

Buffy can be the slayer with Angel and he doesn’t think less of her for it.  It’s something that she didn’t have with Riley, who wanted Buffy but as his idea of what a girl should be and not as a Slayer.  Riley wanted Buffy to be strong, but not too strong.  Angel wanted to support her as she found her own strength.  She had a similar dynamic with Spike, which is why I also like Spuffy.

3.) Is There an Unpopular Opinion You Have On Your Ship?

Angel never stopped seeing Buffy as a child in need of guidance.

While Buffy was the slayer and he supported her in that role, as just Buffy he saw her as being in need of someone to direct and protect her.  The first time Angel saw Buffy was when she hadn’t yet learned of her calling, just a pretty blonde cheerleader in the sun... and likely still just fifteen years old.

Angel had a tendency of hiding information from her, following her around when she made it clear it was unwelcome, and making decisions for her without her knowledge or consent.  It’s one thing when he’s hiding the fact that he’s a vampire with a soul.  It’s another thing entirely when he’s randomly showing up from LA and causing her unnecessary trouble by skulking in the shadows instead of telling her what he knows.

I’m really not sure he ever stopped seeing her as that pretty fifteen-year-old bathed in sunlight.  So while I do believe he supported Buffy’s growth as person and slayer... I don’t think he fully recognized that growth when it happened.

Spuffy

1.) What Made You Ship It?

So Spuffy had a lot of the same qualities of Bangel that I liked, but with Spike who was a much more fun character.  And more interesting IMO.  Sorry Angel.

I like ships with belligerent UST - which Spuffy had - and Spike was a gentleman under his rough exterior so he had this vulnerable and sweet side under it all.

I tend to prefer fanon Spuffy to canon Spuffy, however; not least because their relationship in S6 is an object lesson in why safe words are so damn important.

2.) What Are Your Favorite Things About the Ship?

Much like Buffy could be the Slayer with Angel, she could be that with Spike too.  But he respected Buffy as his equal even when she wasn’t being the Slayer.  I think Spike saw Buffy as she was, flaws and all, and loved her all the more for being imperfect.

And in turn, when Buffy wasn’t clinging to the ‘vampires bad, souls good’ paradigm, she could see the core of who Spike was too.  Just a man who loved too well and too much - I think she saw an intensity there that scared her a bit too, though.

3.) Is There An Unpopular Opinion You Have On Your Ship?

Spike didn’t contact Buffy in S5 of Angel in part because of how she treated him during S6 of BtVS.  It was an unhealthy and abusive dynamic for both of them really and he didn’t believe her when she said she loved him in the series finale, so he was probably worried that if he did reunite with her then they might just wind up with a new version of that bad dynamic.  He didn’t want to be responsible for dragging her down again - since in S7 even when they weren’t involved romantically, choosing to have a platonic relationship with Spike still caused her difficulties with her friends. 

With all the baggage they had, he needed the clean break as much for himself as for her.

Cordoyle

1.) Why Don’t You Ship It?

I don’t know actually?  I mean.  I like their friendship and the flirting is hilarious but... I just don’t actually want them to date.  Cordelia was in a really vulnerable place at the time and Doyle was so uncomfortable with himself that he’d already wrecked one marriage... I guess they were just meeting at a time when neither of them were in a good place to be dating anyone, never mind each other.  I think if Doyle hadn’t died and he’d come to terms with being half demon while Cordelia finally really found herself, as she did later that season... maybe then I’d have shipped them.

It’s definitely not a ship I’m avidly against or anything and it wouldn’t be a turn off for reading a fic, but it’s definitely not a ship I actively ship either.

2.) What Would Have Made You Like it?

So if Doyle hadn’t died mid season one, but instead completed his arc in accepting himself as a half-demon with visions then I’d have been more open to shipping him in general.  But Cordelia finding herself on the show was in part because of the visions she inherited from Doyle - seeing the suffering other people went through really forced her to find herself and learn to become a more compassionate and less self-centered person.  She’d have to go through similar character development in order to be in a better place to date, both for her own sake but in terms of what she had to offer as someone else’s significant other. But also S1 Cordelia needed to learn to be her own hero, after being let down by her parents so badly, and having to wrangle with Doyle’s self loathing on top her own struggles with finding her place in the world would have been a bit much.

I think, ultimately, if they’d both made it alive with character growth to S2, then I’d have started shipping them instead of enjoying them solely as friends who flirt.

3.) Despite Not Shipping It, Do You Have Anything Positive to Say About It?

Their friendship was lovely and I really like the impact they had on each other.  Doyle wanted to become more comfortable with himself in part because he wanted to be more honest with her.  And Cordelia felt safe around Doyle to really just be herself, even when Cordelia wasn’t entirely sure who that was anymore.

And I do think that if Doyle knowingly passed on his visions, he meant them as a gift.  Cordelia was, in many ways, in search of a future and purpose for herself in early S1.  The visions gave her a connection to the world that she’d been unable to make on her own and it gave her something of his to remember him by, long after he was gone. A way for her to remember she was loved by a dear friend and that not even his death could take that friendship from her.

Ahsoka/Chase Random Thoughts:

Ahsoka is the type of girlfriend who loves wearing their partner's clothes, and she approaches the task of stealing Chase's flannels like a stealth operation. Figuring out how the dressing function on his capsule works and subsequently where his clothes are stored is very important intel. And yes, as she told Bree when the bionic girl caught her, she knows could have just asked Chase for one of his flannels, but, as Anakin taught her, sometimes the hard way is the fun way to do things.

I don't know if its fanon or from legends, but I ran across a post saying that togrutas purr, so... the first time the Elite Force ever hears Ahsoka purr is when she falls asleep cuddling next to Chase.

When Rex first meets Chase, he treats him with a mild (professionalism comes first) 'you-are-dating-my-little-sister-if-you-hurt-her-i-will-end-you' intimidation tactic. But upon learning about Chase's background, immediately switches to treating him like one of his brothers, and the two of them end up becoming very close. (Of all the Davenports, Rex actually admires Leo the most, as a natborn having such complete familial love for the genetically-engineered superhumans that he repeatedly risks his own life for them is something Rex considers to be rare, and doesn't even completely understand)

While I hate the androids plot line in Elite Force, and normally write it out ( I'm of the opinion now that it wouldn't take that many months for Ahsoka and Chase to start dating anyways), it would be amusing if the reason all the androids rejected Chase and swarmed Kaz was because Ahsoka sabotaged their programming. Helping Chase come to his senses (and see what's right in front of him) while simultaneously tormenting Kaz. Two birds with one stone.

Chase is terrified of Ahsoka meeting Adam (after they start dating), because of what happened with Sabrina, as well as his insecurities. Problem is, he's far too embarrassed to discuss any of this with Ahsoka, so his anxiety just builds to a crescendo the days leading up to Adam's arrival. Kaz beats him to the punchline, though, by intentionally triggering Spike. And Spike in a cramped penthouse is not a good situation. Though caught off guard, Ahsoka ends up using the force to shut down the Commando App and wake Chase up.

After the Spike incident, and "The Intruder" episode, Ahsoka tries to teach Chase to connect with the Force enough to try and control his bionics even if the Commando App activates or his chip is hacked; this doesn’t work completely, but it helps give Chase a little more control. (I do think Chase could be mildly force-sensitive because he was able to deactivate the Triton App; Leo almost certainly is because he's too damn lucky) Ahsoka also studies his bionics much more diligently, wanting to understand how they work, and how she can help him when he glitches or something else goes wrong.

Ahsoka still struggles with coming to terms with what happened to her on Mortis, and after Chase brings Skylar's powers back, she asks Chase to try and help her determine if there's anything weird, wrong, or unusual about her midi-chlorians or DNA.

Chase absolutely freaked when Ahsoka's montrals were injured during a mission. Not only because Ahsoka, who is normally stoic and silent about any injury, was in a panic due to the excruciating pain and disorientation. But because Chase had to figure out how to treat that part of her anatomy without any previous knowledge to build upon. After the incident and Ahsoka's recovery, they traveled to Shili and purchased a medical droid in case something ever happened again.

Ahsoka looked up Chase on the fan boards, saying it put them on even footing since he was a longtime Star Wars fan. (She didn't actually need to justify her actions, Chase looked uncomfortable when she mentioned it because he knows Bree likes to make derogatory posts about him when she's bored, and what Ahsoka thinks of him matters a lot to him).

While she does tease him for his ego and arrogance, Ahsoka is very supportive of Chase as a leader and individual. And while he had periodic crushes on her when he thought she was just a fictional character, her genuine compliments are what actually caused him to fall head over heels for her. (At that point though he automatically assumed she didn't feel the same)

As a couple they are very physically affectionate. Always holding hands, cuddling, nose nuzzling, kisses... Ahsoka loves being close enough to drape one of her lekku over Chase's shoulder. She also loves messing with his hair, a peculiarity of humans that still somewhat mystifies her even after growing up around so many. Chase has kissed (and counted) every stripe on her montrals/lekku. He also particularly loves resting his head on the area between her montrals when cuddling.

         Also Edric has a date?! Emira says ‘their’ mom… Unless the Golden Guard has a mom, DARN! Not gonna lie, I half-expected a big twist at the end that Edric was dating the Golden Guard, who was doing some sort of reconnaissance as his unrecognized normal self and/or screwing around with the Blights even further, but in a GENUINE sense… But then who knows Kikimora could be posing as GG’s ‘mom’, this is a stretch anyhow-

         JUST HELL YEAH Blight Twins! Blight Twins being sweet and mischievous and supportive of each other, Blight SIBLINGS being siblings, Emira being an older sister and giving advice! And AMITY, Amity mentioning how much Luz has changed stuff, I love that they acknowledge it openly how her life has completely shifted, and now… NOW…!

         No necklace! Red leggings! PINK HAIR?! Is this why Amity in the intro hasn’t been updated yet… She was getting TWO updates, so the animators decided to only animate a change after this final update?!

         King and Gus are also friends it seems, and they even recorded some fun together! I’m surprised at how much Bria and the others mock Gus’ illusion skills… Obviously Belos is kinda terrible but like; I don’t think he’d set aside an entire subset of magic into Illusions without reason! Also that nightmare trip… I LOVE IT, I love Gus applying the creativity of illusions in their ability to completely warp and distort someone’s sense of reality! And I called that dragon-thing being an illusion!

         A graveyard… I wonder if the Gallderstones (is that how it’s spelled) have any relevance or if they’re just neat? I hope Mattholomule and Gus help hide the Looking Glass Graveyard… Damn, that’s another Death reference with Gus, huh! Is it culminating in his respect for the dead, or will it continue further with Gus being a necromancer, or an Oracle who can commune with the deceased, and he has their respect as someone who treats them properly?!

         Also not to get dark but… What if all those Illusionists are dead because of Belos? I’m JUST SAYING…! And not gonna lie, every time someone insulted Illusions, I kept imagining the Illusion Head just suddenly waking up and feeling like there’s a disturbance in the force, as well as a weird compulsion to beat up some Glandus kids. It’d be even funnier if he had beef with the Construction, Plant, and Abomination Heads as well!

         Speaking of which, more confirmation on Construction Magic being related to earth! Glad to see Bria give us a look into that, which furthers my idea of Belos using construction magic… Also dang, Bria and the Glandus Kids really are the parallels/foils to the Detention kids! You’ve got the short ‘nice’ girl, the tall lanky kid, the furry… But the Glandus Kids start off looking nice and cool, but turn out to be rather nasty!

         Meanwhile the Detention Kids seem like bad news and delinquents, but no! They’re just demonized and actually very kind and chill! The Detention Kids are looked down upon, the Glandus Kids are appraised… The Detention Kids are dual-track, the Glandus Kids are singular; Glandus Kids from, well, GLANDUS, Detention Kids from Hexside… One’s ‘mischief’ is actually very neat and cool, the other’s is literal grave robbing.

         I guess that’s how the bleeding statues got past the censors- It’s technically just an illusion! Also more insight into how Glandus works with its Survival of the Fittest mentality, I wonder if we’ll get confirmation on which coven heads came from there, how that might influence them as adults…

         What is Glandus like, is it more whole-heartedly accepting of Belos’ rule, hence its harsh ideals? Was it made after Hexside? Does Bump hate it for being so cruel like that, or is it just school bias? And dang poor Mattholomule, I always had a feeling he sort of felt and knew that he wasn’t much, so he accepted and compensated by deliberately doing whatever he can for power…

         They confirmed he’s from Glandus, and I appreciate this new look at him! This new leaf turned… Hot take but he’s honestly not as bad as Boscha, his stint with Gus was a one-time thing that Gus was able to live with! And that seems pretty good to set them up as friends! Speaking of Boscha, Willow was injured by pixies? And the last time we heard of pixies, they belonged to Boscha and caused the school to get shut down… Did BOSCHA DO THIS I SWEAR SHE IS DEAD TO ME-

         (Also she’s mentioned in the credits for this episode but I don’t remember hearing her? I might’ve gotten distracted with so much other things.)

         Gus! I like the insight into his relationship with Illusions, and I appreciate how he’s considering other forms of magic… But this hesitation might just serve to reaffirm his believe in Illusions, which is okay! It’s all about choice… And yeah, it seems Gus also has a case of impostor syndrome like King, no wonder they get along so well! I love the glimpses into Gus’ house and the confirmation that he has a library card, no Perry though alas…!

         I appreciate how Gus feels overlooked, like he has no real substance, which is how his Illusions reflect a desire to draw attention, but also the idea that there’s nothing real beneath them… Again, very much like King! And Gus, he’s not a powerhouse like the rest, he’s SKILLED and smart, but strength isn’t his forte, it’s not brute force he operates on, but cleverness! Trickery, I like it…! It’s a nice callback to his last A-plot episode, SVSF, where instead of fighting Mattholomule physically, Gus’ solution is to think outside the box and pull the alarm!

         You go kid, not relying on brute strength but showing that some clever tricks and thinking are just as valid! Kinda wonder if this episode is lowkey a discussion on masculinity for young boys, especially with Gus growing older with puberty, though the latter is mostly because his actual VA grew… But maybe the writers rolled with that and incorporated it, or it’s just a very neat coincidence! Also, it is me or did Mattholomule’s voice change? And the gag that Gavin’s dad looks identical to him, even moreso because he’s NOT supposed to have a moustache… That’s great!

         Malphas! Love this reference to a classic demon, I wasn’t sure if Malphas was the librarian with glasses whom I’ve always headcanoned as a father figure to Amity… But maybe it’s actually this bird dude! He seems adept in Bard magic, and I love the reveal of his true crow appearance… Guess those theorists were right that the one-eyed figure is from the Forbidden Stacks! Also Malphas NOT COOL with Amity, but I’m glad Luz changed his mind, and I wonder how that adventure looked…

         Which- DAMN, the RSD with Luz! She looks so UTTERLY BROKEN when Amity mentions doing stupid things, and she didn’t mean it like that, but Luz just looks so completely shattered and you can tell she wants to cry but instead she bottles it up and tries to take it in stride, and that plays into her trying to overcompensate for her mistakes AGAIN… SOMEONE GET IT TO HER HEAD that she doesn’t need to! I’m scared for Luz, and I was SO scared this episode would end on a bad note…

         BUT DOAHLDdFAEONDKFHN LUMITY KISS LUMITY KISS! ONE-SIDED BUT THEY FINALLY FUCKING KNOW AND AMITY IS LIKE WHAAAAT AND I WAS WAITING FOR IT AND I COULD FEEL IT HAPPEN AND GAY KISS! GAY KISS ON-SCREEN!!! And the way Luz just FLOPS to the ground on her knees AAHJJFFKHGGK and no Alador nor Odalia to ruin this, UTTERLY PERFECT and the twins WATCHING OOOHHHHGGGG YYYEEAAAAHHH-

         What an AMAZING episode with wonderful characer beats and reveals! Again, Amity’s growth as a character, that brief insight into how Luz as a person is very chaotic and sometimes frustrating for Amity and forces her to reevaluate, but ultimately it’s good and Luz DOES try her best, and Amity clearly wanted to make things up for Luz and apologize, they’re BOTH doing things, just the little moments!

         Also, Alex Lawther voices Philip Wittebane! He has long hair and a vaguely british accent, he’s… He’s Belos isn’t he? And they got a new VA because having him voiced by Matthew Rhys would be really spoiler-y right? He’s got the long hair and he’s a nerd… And with how he talks of finding a way back home, maybe Belos really DOES just want to return home, after all? He talks of making a way back home…

         And we see a glimpse of the Portal, so it might’ve brought him there? Or did Philip succeed in making it, and that was his blueprint designs? Did he arrive by Titan’s Blood? What happened to the portal if it brought him there, or if he made it? Why the scar, why near Eda’s house, partially buried?

         Was it lost before he could finish his work, and Philip got side-tracked into something else… Perhaps going on a crusade, on behalf of a curse/demon that possessed him? A demon that killed King’s father…? Was the portal broken and he had to discard it, but then it naturally healed- Or did it just need to recharge, maybe Philip DID make it back home, WHAT IS THE ANSWER?! Is there some sort of doppelganger for Philip, is BELOS his doppelganger?! What is THIS WHAT-

Surprisingly I don't thiiink so? For all the hot girl summer breakdowns I do indeed be having and no longer feeling shame over crying it's still actually pretty difficult to move me to tears? If I say certain things or scenes made me cry it's probably not hyperbole it's just me highlighting it cause it was surprising and made me more fond of whatever it was for it, but that said, on my second playthrough I was like okay this is totally gonna get to me about like both the safe ending stuff and the true ending backstory stuff but,, then it didn't, I got all mushy and couldn't speak to my friend right but no tears. so like yeah I need a lot of preexisting investment on a character and surprise at new developments for it to get to me like that usually and it's so close to the last stretch of the game that you can really fully understand his character for it to count so what I'm saying is if he was in another game ever I'd probably definitely have cried

4. what about their personality i like

That's such a fun question about him since so much of what we see is an act lmao but like, even with that I still like how easily he seems to convert skin crawling anxiety into am angy energy despite not genuinely wanting to antagonize most people in there, like the character he's putting on is argumentative and very aggressive sounding but he's never like shown to be in any way physically violent when push comes to shove, putting the planned gun stuff aside and also like yeah less of a stretch that he'd have no qualms about hurting Hongou if need be, but even then with like when Door 3 happens for example and he has every reason to follow through when he threatens Junpei he immediately just drops it after Akane's outburst cause it's not his real response to the situation (also she'd be sadder if they fought), also I like how he has some slip ups here and there that like he recovers from pretty instantly but they're still more noticeable than whatever Akane ever has going on for example but okay, allll of that aside my favorite bit is definitely the little we know of him before everything we know he worked really hard to be a good sibling to Akane and was really considerate when taking care of her to the point of keeping up the Santa thing even through the harsh circumstances

Good question, difficult question, you were right he's such an upsetting character to think about, uh hardly anything good happens to this guy doesn't it, I'm torn between hearing him over the speaker on the safe ending and well obvi the incinerator thing but also like, not exactly an Aoi moment, but Snake explaining how him and Akane were never reported missing always gets to me a lot too like hhh yeah I could be all day listing every instance that comes to mind couldn't I, hmm. I'll say. It's very especially heartbreaking to get to the part with tiny them in the lifeboat because he's just so damn relieved that whole nightmare is over but we know it's not,,,

Reunion huuuug!!! That was the one I was the closest to actually crying during and like scenes that are like this that are happy and a relief are the ones that most get to me everytime but also honestly I can't think of any other genuinely happy moment we get from him

THERE'S NO REASON FOR US TO BELIEVE HE IS A RUDE JERK WITH ZERO COMPASSION FOR OTHERS OUTSIDE OF THE ACT C'MON PEOPLE HE RAISED ANOTHER KID WHILE GROWING UP HE'D PROBABLY BE A CHRONIC MOM FRIEND UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES AKANE DOESN'T EVEN CURSE Okay but in all seriousness I guess the best way to put it is that I don't like how fandom portrays him as impulsive? Like, that was one of the traits he put on but that out of every other one I can't really see him genuinely being at all, no matter how you stretch it, like I do think he's more emotionally driven than Akane but they both are very much aware of everything they do, the stuff they both pull off are complex and intricate and have not inches of space for mistakes that acting like that on the regular could bring, even if he's being reckless I don't think he'd default to do stuff without thinking y'know he's not like Junpei who jumps no thoughts head empty into any fist fight out of a sense of justice or something I think it'd be out of being too antsy and anxious and needing something to physically happen and thinking okay this won't end well but I'm doing it anyway, like I've even seen people having him snap at Akane at the drop of a hat like?? I see this question posed every so often, and I always answer it with my own take on things, because it's fun to speculate. But I try to keep my answers brief and not overwhelm people with my ramblings, and honestly? I don't like brief. In case you haven't noticed lmao. I like to explain my thoughts, break them down, really dig in. So that's what I'm going to do.

So, buckle up, folks. It's time for my full, unabridged view of Bucky Barnes as a lover through different points in his life (MCU only. reminder for those who don't know me: I don't read comics)

Let's start with this cutie-pie:

Pre-war Bucky seemed so precious and innocent compared to even later in the same movie. He likely didn't have an easy life even before the draft, growing up through the Great Depression and all that. But still, he's young, attractive, and extremely charismatic, with a smile that can light up the whole damn Stark Expo. He definitely never wanted for female company, and in the brief interaction with his date that we're shown, it's clear to see why: Bucky's fun. He's optimistic and sweet, and pays attention to the people he's out with, even when he's geeking out at a science fair.

But did he screw around? Honestly? I don't think so. Not before the War. (And yes, I am aware that the War is very much happening as all this is going on. Duh. Uniform. XD I mean before he shipped out and spent months trying not to get blown up in a foreign country.) Bucky's a good boy with strong early 20th century values and he respects women (which kind of contradicts most early 20th century male values, but our baby is nothing if not unique lol). Premarital sex was kind of a big deal back then, and I don't think young Bucky Barnes would have risked "dishonoring" his date like that. He'd want to nail the pretty girl, sure lol but he'd control himself. There might have been one or two girls here and there who were like "nah idgaf you're hot let's do this" lol. I don't think our boy was a virgin going off to war, I just think he had a lot more companionship than sex. Also, let's not forget that in my mind, Bucky is bi. It'd be more difficult for him to be with a man back then without suffering greatly for it, but I definitely think he managed at least once.

As far as what he was like when he did have sex? I'm thinking goofy, lots of tickling and teasing. Sex would be his escape from the pressures and stress of his daily life, and he'd enjoy it to the max. Total giggly goofball. ❤ He'd be attentive (you'll find that's a common theme in my take on Bucky in general) and would make absolutely sure his partner was having at least as much fun as he was. And that's the key word: FUN. It would be this exciting secret (protect a girl's reputation or his own and his partner's if it's with a man) with lots of whispering between the sheets and shushing each other when one got too loud, even if they're in a place that's totally safe from prying eyes/ears. After all, the secrecy is half the fun!

Next we have this point in our boy's life:

Now, him? Marching around Europe and getting shot at? Tired, scared, homesick? This man got around. He thought he knew stress before, dealing with the Depression and homophobia and his stupid reckless friend constantly getting himself beat up? Oh, no. Soldier Bucky would like to reach back through time and punch Pre-war Bucky in his stupid adorable perfect face. He understood what he was walking into when he got drafted... or so he thought. He knew he'd be in danger, at least. Especially as a Jewish man being sent to fight Nazis in the middle of the Holocaust. (yes, I like and agree with this fanon) But this? This is beyond his worst nightmares. His one goddamn light in all this darkness is the towns full of lonely, frightened women his troops march through. There might even have been a few precious, stolen moments with that one guy in his unit. You know, the shy, coy glances when no one's looking, feeling things out, dancing delicately around the subject in rare calm moments, hoping, each trying not to out himself in case he's wrong about the other... And then a drunken, frantic night in a dark corner where no one can see when they just can't take it anymore.

But honestly, my weird little wartime romance fantasy aside, I don't think they'd have gotten enough down time for that to be realistic. (TBF I know very little about WWII. it's my brother's passion but that's only part of why I have spent my whole fkn life avoiding the subject as much as possible. so anyway, maybe they did have the time/opportunity. idfk) So it'd mostly be the women. Left alone with their men marched off to war - or worse, to camps, and fuck, Bucky feels for those poor bastards! - they're as lonely and frightened and on edge as he is. There's no telling if he'll live to make an honest woman of anyone, or live to see the next goddamn day, for that matter. Family values seem a little hollow and pointless when the world's coming apart at the seams.

Shell-shocked Sergeant Bucky is frantic, not impatient but there's definitely a sense of urgency in every move he makes. Sometimes he can't stop himself from shaking. He and this woman he's just met are desperately seeking solace in each other's arms, not romance or meaning, and it shows. Few words are exchanged - hell, he doesn't even speak her language and isn't sure she speaks his! Gone is the silliness and lighthearted fun he's used to. In its place is rough touches, grasping fingers, both of them clinging to the other for dear life for just a few hours or even just a few minutes. Whatever they can carve out for themselves in this endless parade of untold horrors. He just needs to not feel so goddamn alone for a little while.

What's funny is I'm still not even done with TFA-Bucky. He went through so much trauma and so many changes in such a short time (and even shorter screen time). Mad props to Sebastian for how flawlessly he portrayed all of these moments in Bucky's life, too!

Ah, the Howlie. Busy keeping his dumb, reckless friend from getting his head blown off, this Bucky hasn't even had a moment to breathe and process his own trauma as a combat vet and POW, and the hits just keep on coming. Gods, do you guys ever just stop and think about the fact that this all happened - Bucky was drafted, sent off to war, captured, tortured, experimented on, rescued, went back into the fray, and "died" - all in the span of two. fucking. years? By the time he falls off the train and out of the movie, Bucky's still not even 30 yet!

Howlie Bucky is angry. We see as much in every shot of his beautiful face. The fear and loneliness of his days in the trenches have been burned up, consumed by anger and a sort of bitter resignation. He's not going home. Not as long as Steve's out there playing the hero, and not as long as HYDRA, and specifically Zola, are still out there wreaking havoc. He's probably never going to see his little sister again. But he'll be damned if he's going down without a fight. Though... speaking of going down... (lol had to. sorrynotsorry)

Sex with this man would be so hot. This is where all those "choke me, Bucky" fics become pretty realistic. (I know, I know. y'all want the metal hand around your throat. well just wait a few years, kay? we'll get there) This Bucky would definitely hold a woman down by her neck, not hurting her, just exerting just a little pressure... Just enough to show who's in control. Because he had control taken from him. He was imprisoned and tortured. It's natural for him to try to take that back any way he can. He would absolutely never force anyone, ever, but once someone agrees? He's in charge, and he'll never let them forget it.

This Bucky wouldn't merely tease, he'd torment. He'd take his time, bring his partner to the edge, watch for every tiny reaction... And then when he's got them fighting tears of frustration, begging for release, then he'd fuck them into the mattress. Or wall, or ground. Wherever the hell they are at the time lol.

I'm sorry, but I won't be getting into his time under HYDRA control. This is a post about what Bucky's like as a lover, not how the Winter Soldier handled being raped.

This moment. Oh my Loki this moment. This is the exact second that I fell in love with Bucky Barnes. Also when I fell in love with Romanian (side note: day 156 on Duolingo! and I learned more from this scene than I have in all that time XD still keep getting "cheese" and "lunch" mixed up!) Lol anyway...

In my headcanon, post-WS Bucky is actually very sex-averse after the shit he's suffered at their hands, but for the purposes of this particular tangent, I'm going to pretend that's not how I see him lol.

Bucky's on the run. He's keeping his head down, trying to live a quiet life free from his captors and anyone else who would find him "useful" or try to prosecute him for what HYDRA forced him to do, while also trying to remember who he is and process seventy years of horrific trauma. He's afraid, but not like Soldier Bucky was afraid. He's not so much afraid of what might happen to him. Romania Bucky is afraid of himself, and what damage he could do if triggered. Restraint is basically this man's middle name at this point.

Hiding or not, this man definitely got some. Not only is he insanely fucking beautiful, but has there ever been a time in his life where he needed the endorphins and sweet stress relief that come with sex more than right then? He couldn't have had an honest, committed relationship, not with his baggage and fears, but I can easily see him getting attention from some pretty girl, getting flustered when she flirts with him, and shyly agreeing to her proposition.

He'd be so soft, you guys. ❤ Shy, unsure, letting his partner lead. All sweet, gentle touches and soft kisses and exploring... Sure, he'd be more or less limited to one night stands, but they'd never feel cheap or rushed. I can just see him, kissing his way up her leg, always stroking with his right hand, never the left; afraid to touch her, to taint her, with the cold metal; so he'd use his left to brace himself up, to keep it from touching this sweet, innocent person who doesn't deserve to be dragged into his crazy, tumultuous world. And he'd drive her wild with his right hand, and his mouth. (I say "her" only because I'm too tired to research attitudes toward homosexuality in Bucharest in 2016 to see how realistic or not it would be for a dude to openly hit on another dude there lol)

There would be this undercurrent, I think, of "I'm scared I'm lonely I'm alone and damaged and changed and I just want to feel human again." Bucky doesn't recognize himself, doesn't know who he is - barely knows who he was - or where he stands. He'd be so vulnerable, poor babe. I know CW gave us "beefy Bucky" but honestly, emotionally he just seems so small to me in that movie. A sad, frightened, feral kitten.

Okay. Gods. I could talk about CW Bucky all damn day but let's save that for another time, shall we? 😂

Moving on!

"I had a little...calm... in Wakanda." I feel like Wakanda was the first time Bucky felt what home meant since he left Brooklyn. These people accepted, even embraced him, and they helped him to heal from all the horrific things he'd seen and experienced. He still has a long way to go (naturally. he suffered horrifically for decades. Two years, even in paradise, aren't enough to work through all that) but he's made so much progress thanks to T'challa, Shuri, and Ayo ❤

Here is where he's been able to stop and take a breath for the first time since 1943. I'd like to think he was able to have a relationship here. Not right away, and nothing too deep/consuming, but definitely something more than the one-nighters he'd been having pretty much his entire adult life.

Bucky had/has a lot of work to do on himself. He needs therapy, with a trauma specialist, not a court-appointed triggering hack (we're not there yet, but rawr). But he made a lot of strides in Wakanda. Like CW, I could go off for hours talking about this part of his story and how much I love what little of it we were shown and wish we could see more, but time to focus!

Like I said, I like to think Wakanda Bucky had a gf/bf. I would like it to have been Ayo, but someone told me a while back that she has a gf in the comics and while I don't generally gaf about comics or their canon, I'm not about the erasure of what little LGBTQ+ representation is out there right now. But whoever it was, I know Bucky would have treated them right.

He'd be similar to Romania Bucky in that he'd be sweet and attentive. Maybe a little shy at first, but that's not the reason he's so gentle in the bedroom. He's not as afraid anymore, not here where it's quiet and safe. For the first time in years, he can finally let go and just enjoy the company and the touch of another person. The metal arm he hated is gone, and he's a little clumsy at first with only one arm to work with and his weight balance thrown off again, but he and his partner work it out together, and being free of that awful thing HYDRA slapped on him is such a sweet relief.

Wakanda Bucky would be laid back, soft-spoken but not nervous or unsure. He'd be a great listener, and after work on his little farm was done for the day, he'd stay up a little ways into the night, talking in hushed tones between soft kisses and lingering touches, about the future, family and kids. He can finally see hope for the first time in so long, can see recovery ahead of him, and peace, and he wants to share that with his s/o. Too bad IW/EG had to fucking ruin that for him. ugh. anyway...

...You know what? I'm gonna have to just leave it here, guys. The levels of rage I keep reaching trying to write about the show are exhausting me. For the sake of my sanity and the purposes of this post, Bucky's still safe and happy in Wakanda, working on himself, maintaining his little goat farm, and falling asleep every night in the arms of the loving partner he deserves. The end.

I just want to say, before I say anything, I'm not accusing you of saying this and I understand that you feel how you feel. I'm just asking this in a very general way and was wondering your thoughts. Why is it so verboten to think Zuko might have had a slight crush on Katara? There seems to be a rush to not just deny it but to treat it like it's some sort of horrible thing to even suggest it and I'm not sure why that is?

Katara is presented as a beautiful, lively girl who is a powerful bender. Why wouldn’t Zuko be a little starry eyed over that? It doesn’t mean she likes him back. Idk, I’m not exactly sure where my point is, except that being shouted down for just advancing the idea that maybe Zuko had the hots for Katara is a little frustrating? I’m not saying he was wacking off in his bunk thinking about her or expected to get some while they were hunting Yon Rha.

Also, unrequited crushes happen in ATLA-verse? Toph/Sokka anyone? Why does that never get screeched on but saying “Hey, Zuko loved Mai but he was probably looking at Katara and thinking ‘noice!’ a couple of times” the worst thing in the world? Is it the Water Tribe/Fire Nation thing? I mean, if it’s that, I wish people would just say that and stop screaming at people for their headcanons and whatnot. [theend]

Lol do not worry anon I know this isn’t an accusation!! Not only have I myself never perpetuated this rhetoric, but I don’t think I’ve really heard it before! Maybe once or twice?? I might just keep to chill parts of fandom, lmao, and that’s why I’m not very familiar with it. But I’ll do my best to theorize what may spark conflict based on the info you provided me!

My main guess is that it’s not the headcanon itself that makes people frustrated, but how some shippers probably treat the HEADcanon as canon-canon (not an issue exclusive to Zvtara, btw; all big fanon ships have this problem - Zvkka, anyone? lmao). I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with headcanoning that Zuko had a crush on Katara! But in that same vein, there’s nothing inherently wrong with others acknowledging that the headcanon has no basis in canon either, if that makes sense. And headcanons don’t need canon basis! Headcanons are fanon! That’s why they’re so much fun! I ship Kuzaang like there’s no tomorrow, but I can also acknowledge that there wasn’t anything in canon that demonstrated Aang having a crush on Kuzon. Kuzaang is strictly fanon, and I love that about the pairing! It means I have incredible free reign, hehe.

But yeah. I don’t think it has anything to do with their different nations! Like I said - it’s probably solely an issue of some shippers (and undoubtedly just a loud minority) treating the headcanon as canon.

I don’t think saying “Hey, Zuko loved Mai but he was probably looking at Katara and thinking ‘noice!’ a couple of times” is the worst thing in the world, lmao. I do want to make a distinction here, though; this example you provide is actually an example of aesthetic attraction, which is not the same as a crush (crushes are indicative of romantic attraction)! So saying/headcanoning that Zuko thought Katara was pretty (as anyone with a brain would say, let’s be real) does not actually equate to him having a crush on her.

But back to the crush headcanon. I mentioned that I (personally!) don’t think it has canon basis. I will admit that I am not alloromantic, so crushes in themselves are a little confusing to me (I mean,, people just randomly like someone?? based on their appearance?? without even knowing them?? hell nah), but even disregarding that, I don’t think it would make much sense within canon for Zuko to have had a crush on Katara.

Again, disclaimer: there’s nothing wrong with the headcanon! Fanon is meant to contradict canon! To expand canon! To rewrite canon! Fanon is transformative. That’s the entire purpose of fanon. Go wild with that headcanon!! Make art!! Produce fics!! Support content creators!! Hell yeah!!

So what do I mean when I say that I personally feel there’s no canon basis for Zuko having a crush on Katara? Well, for one, he joined the Gaang in episode 12 of Book 3. That’s episode 52 of 61 overall. So in everything prior to that, Zuko not only has no idea who Katara is but he is also neck-deep in imperialistic rhetoric (you know, racism, superiority complexes, all that jazz. not fun for anyone non-FN). No possible crush there. In “The Western Air Temple” episode itself, Katara (understandably) threatens Zuko. She means what she says, and I think Zuko recognizes that. A crush there wouldn’t make sense - they’ve only properly met this second time and Katara (understandably) hates Zuko’s guts for what he’s done to the Gaang and to her personally.

Episode 53 is “The Firebending Masters” - Zuko’s too hung up on his firebending not working to think about anything else (Katara obviously still does not trust him yet, either, meaning Zuko is pretty much on edge around her. again, she threatened him, and Zuko no doubt took her threat seriously).

54 and 55 are “The Boiling Rock” episodes; not only are these Maiko-heavy but also in general… I mean, Katara’s not really in them. At least not from Zuko’s POV. So nothing implies a crush there. And then after those episodes, it’s worth considering that Zuko probably thinks Mai is dead. That he left her, the girl he loves, to die at Azula’s hands. We know Zuko tends to hold guilt to his chest, so concluding he blamed himself for Mai’s “death” is not illogical. Why would he all of sudden switch his sights to Katara, even if it was just a simple crush? While he’s grieving? That doesn’t track to me.

And then, of course, “The Southern Raiders.” This episode has been talked about to death, so I’ll keep it brief, lmao. I will draw attention to only one line, spoken by Zuko:

This isn’t fair! Everyone else seems to trust me now! What is it with you?

As we all know, TSR was not a flattering episode for Zuko. He was a racist asshole to Aang and - as aforementioned - acted as if he was entitled to Katara’s trust. Obviously, Zuko grows through the episode, and we see by the end that he respects Aang’s wisdom and respects Katara’s decision to walk away from Yon Rha (which is awesome!! I adore this brief but incredibly crucial arc of his!!). But my point is that nothing demonstrates romantic interest from Zuko to Katara. If anything, his initial motives are pretty damn selfish (i.e. demanding her to trust him because he feels like he “deserves” it already).

Emphasis on “initial” motives, of course. Obviously he grows more sincere!! (Tis the point of the episode for Zuko.)

So they end TSR on new, peaceful terms. Personally, I don’t think their relationship would be magically sunshine and roses after that (Zuko did some fucked up shit to the Gaang, lmao), but I do think things are getting better between them! Still, there is nothing indicative of a canon crush.

Next episode, in EIP, they scoot away from each other at the possibility of being together, yk? That doesn’t mean they hate each other’s guts, lmfao, but EIP is meant to depict imperialist Fire Nation propaganda - who wouldn’t be uncomfortable with that? Like, the entire Gaang is demeaned in that play. There’s nothing romantic about it. It’s a similar situation later with June - this is a lady that doesn’t know anything remotely personal about Zuko or Katara. Of course they’d react in a horrified and flustered manner when this - for all intents and purposes - total stranger suggests that they’re together! That’s creepy as hell! Definitely not indicative of a crush, lmao. And considering that the Gaang never teases Zuko about having a crush on Katara (compared to how I think Toph teases Katara about Haru?), i.e. the people who know them the best, there’s no reason for the audience to think anything is going on between them.

And after all that… Well, now we’re in the finale. What time is there for romance? There’s a reason the canon couples don’t reunite until after the war is won! (Minus Sukka, I guess, but they’re not professing their love on the battlefield, per se, lmao.) Zuko chooses Katara to go with him because she’s a powerful waterbender and the only person who’s been able to handle Azula in the past (besides Aang, arguably, who’s obviously occupied with Ozai), not because he “likes” her in a romantic sense.

All of this is to say that to me, Zuko having a crush on Katara is strictly fanon. Which is awesome! Fanon is fantastic, and I actually really like these types of headcanons (like, Teo having a crush on Aang? GOOD SHIT). Some people are just jerks about it. That said, I can still understand why people might get frustrated by those who preach this headcanon as if it’s pulled straight from the text itself. I absolutely think it’s ridiculous to harass others over a headcanon (which unfortunately you see on both sides of the ship war), but in that same vein - of course it’s frustrating when those loud few act like their fanon is canon and proceed to shove it down others’ throats, lmao. It’s an imperfect situation, basically.

TL;DR - The headcanon in itself is great, and no one should be getting freaking harassed over it. But it is strictly fanon, so when some shippers treat it like canon, that’s understandably going to frustrate the rest of the fandom. Headcanons are a double-edged sword, lmao.

So that’s my personal theory as to why people get pressed over this headcanon. If anyone else has a different idea, please feel free to rb/comment with it!

New follower here and I just wanted to get your thoughts on ppl who put down gay ships (esp in mha) I’m a wholehearted bkdk shipper and one of the most common insults I see against it is that gay ships are “forced” on the fans. But like... straight ships are too. And not only that but it feels like they’re just ignoring real chemistry and development in favor of heteronormativity. I think you’re exactly right in how you feel. The ‘normal’ we’re always presented with in manga, especially shounen when they choose to include some kind of romance, it’s a boy and a girl at the end. People have adjusted to that, and while that can be fine, they’ve adjusted in a way that highlights their homophobia. Because now when they see the hints of a canon gay pairing, their immediate thought is “well that isn’t a normal pairing, that can’t happen.” 

When in reality, it’s perfectly normal and there is nothing wrong with it, they just can’t picture it because they’ve only been fed heterosexual content. 

That is also why those within the LGBTQ+ community tend to push for these canon gay pairings, because we would love to see that positively represented in the media we consume and enjoy. And what’s wrong with that? Nothing, not a damn thing. 

Anyone who says we’re forcing gay relationships on the characters 1. doesn’t understand how fandom and fanon works and 2. is probably homophobic and mad they aren’t getting their straight way. 

My biggest advice when dealing with those kinds of people is to just move on. Block em, make it so they can’t interact with you anymore. It’s just not worth it. Fandom is meant to be fun and enjoyable, and people like that just taint the atmosphere, so it’s best to just...push em off to the side lol

Why I like them: Sass. Fandom’s interpretation as Ultimate Big Brother (behind Alpha-17, of course). Mysterious scar. And he’s pretty.

Why I don’t: Honestly? The fact that the clones are slave soldiers, and the fact that fandom tends to give racially biased interpretations of the clones (I’m guilty of this too). Nothing to do with Cody himself, honestly, which isn’t to say he’s perfect or anything, I find him to be rough around the edges but who wouldn’t be in his shoes?

Favorite episode: s1e16 The Hidden Enemy. This one is probably on my top 5 list even without Cody. But guys. GUYS. “Hey there, Slick. Gun’s empty.” WHAT COULD BE MORE ICONIC?

Favorite film: Okay technically these questions were “episode/scene if a movie” and “season/movie” but because he’s in both I’m gonna have to go with a film for this one. Revenge of the Sith. Listen, I can’t watch ROTS without crying but damn if I don’t love Cody in it anyway. The lightsaber scene will ALWAYS get me. (Season 1 gets an honorable mention.)

Favorite line: Uh. Well. Okay so. “Hey there, Slick. Gun’s empty.” *holds up mag* LISTEN GUYS I LOVE THAT ONE. Favorite outfit: ... his armor? No actually though, I love his Phase II armor. Phase I is cool but Phase II has the cool ventilators. And how can I not make fun of his antenna?

OTP: Codywan. Ideally in a post-war fix-it or semi-fix-it where there isn’t a huge power imbalance, but I’ve been known to read Codywan stuff that takes place during the war, especially before I was as cognizant of the power imbalance as I am now.

BroTP: Cody and Rex. I’m sure y’all saw that one coming. I mean it’s CODY and REX, I’m pretty sure that’s everyone’s BroTP!

Headcanon: So this might be a good time to mention that I headcanon everyone everywhere as autistic. Everyone is autistic. Cody is autistic. Okay actually though, I headcanon that Cody has a great deal of anxiety. He handles it well, and he has a support system, but given his entire life, and the fact that he’s a Marshal Commander, and further more the headcanon we collectively have that Obi-Wan insists on promoting Cody to get out of paperwork because Cody deserves it, he’s probably anxious. Unpopular opinion: Do I have one? Tbh I don’t know how to determine whether an opinion about a character is unpopular. How do we define unpopular? Do we mean just like, not commonly known or shared? Because if so, I once again raise for your consideration: everyone is autistic, therefore Cody is autistic.

A wish: For Disney to retcon Order 66. Barring that, for the Bad Batch show to give him a happy ending involving the removal of his chip and the opportunity to live happily ever after with Obi-Wan on Tatooine. Why I like them: HE’S PRETTY. And sassy. There’s a pattern here.

Why I don’t: I don’t think there’s ever a time in canon that he acknowledges all the issues with the clones’ existence. He does in fanon, which I can appreciate, but canonically he’s like, “ah yes, we bought 3.2 million humans. We’ll just stick them in this war I guess.” Also frankly he’s a bit oblivious, bordering on daft, especially considering he’s the Negotiator, I mean he KEPT HIS LAST NAME when he went into hiding. I still love him though.

Favorite scene: That deleted “good girl, Boga” scene, which just hits different when you’ve read Master & Apprentice and know how much he loves varactyls. I don’t care that it’s deleted. It’s my favorite. (Plus you’ll probably like this better than my favorite episode, which is the Kadavo episode.)

Favorite film: Attack of the Clones. Listen listen listen, he has a lot of good moments in TCW, but hands down it’s AOTC.

Headcanon: ACE!OBI ACE!OBI ACE!OBI!!!!!! Also,,, autistic!Obi. I know I know, but actually genuinely @fromryloth-tocorellia has some pretty good autistic!Obi-Wan stuff, including Obi-Wan being semi-verbal, low-verbal, and non-verbal. Autistic characters is a hill I will die on, and Obi-Wan is a character I happen to enjoy projecting on (oops). Plus, if I headcanon Cody and Obi-Wan as autistic, then the entire Ibonek family is autistic, and I love that.

Unpopular opinion: The only reason Obi-Wan “left Anakin to die” was because there was nothing he could safely do to help. When I was taking first aid classes, one of the first things they told us was that, unless there is no danger to yourself, you do not help. You wait for actual first responders to show up. If Obi-Wan had tried to help Anakin, either Anakin would have killed him or Obi-Wan would also have been severely burned. And if he had stayed, he may have been caught by Palpatine. Is it sad that he left? Absolutely. Heartbreaking. I don’t think it was a GOOD decision. But he didn’t just leave him to die; there was no other safe option. There were no good decisions here. I have a lot of thoughts about this, I have half-written essays on Discord about it, feel free to ask further questions.

A wish: For Qui-Gon’s dying words to be retconned. I know I wrote that post about how his dying words were full of trust in Obi-Wan and I stand by that, but that doesn’t mean Obi-Wan realized that, or that they were a good choice.

Unpopular opinion: to quote Paige Layle on TikTok: “Stop using the term low functioning autistics when you really mean that they’re just nonverbal. And nonverbal autistics still have a lot to say, they just have a hard time talking.” Basically, I’m certain that as this AU gains traction, Pova’s gonna start getting flak from readers for being nonverbal. It hasn’t happened yet, and maybe I’m just being pessimistic, but just in case someone needs the reminder: No. Stop now. Pova’s autistic. And nonverbal. And not a savant (man I fucking hate that trope). But they are a capable Jedi and, with Cody and Obi, developed a very functional sign language comprised of Jedi hand signals, trade sign language (like from episode 5 of the Mandalorian, that the Tuskens use?), and ARC signals. There will be NO functioning labels on this AU, and Pova has and will continue to have PLENTY to say. If you have a problem you know where the door is.

A wish: For everyone to love my kiddo as much as I do!

why I like them

oh god where do i even start. katara just contains so many multitudes - she's sweet and feminine and caring and attentive but she's never reduced to just that, she's never just 'the girl', she's also allowed to get mad, to be petty, to laugh at her brother, to be headstrong and stubborn, to express vulnerability, to cry and to laugh, to make ridiculous facial expressions and *be* very expressive. she's dealing with a lot of trauma not simply from the loss of her mother but that loss represents also how her tribe have been decimated by the fire nation, how she's the last waterbender, how all this pressure exists on her shoulders (but also pride, but also determination, to bring it back) and that is expressed subtly throughout the series with the same depth and love that male characters are afforded with regard to their respective traumatic experiences. and despite all this she never tries to stop making the world good? She's always pushing for change, she's always wanting to make things better, she's relentless and doesn't give up when it comes to her vision for a better world... she has such a big heart. and that coexists with a deep anger in her, and deep hurt. Not to make an ocean metaphor so early on but she's as deadly and deep as the ocean but she chooses to be kind and warm and that's so powerful.

why i don't

honnestly while katara's instincts to mother people are a sad symptom of how she was forced to grow up to soon and automaically asigns herself a role of emotional responsibility she has mixed feelings about, i know that if katara tried to mother me, i would be annoyed. but that sounds more like a me problem.

favourite episode

oh it's either the episode where she beats the fucking shit out of pakku or it's the southern raiders. the first one because it's so gratifying to see how she's grown and developed as a bender and really come into her own. the second because... god i love how *messy* the southern raiders is, and it really taps into what i love about katara - she's flawed, she runs off on an ill-thought out revenge mission with zuko, she's got a great capability for darkness as she quite seriously considers murdering a man she has every right to loathe and to kill - but she chooses against it, in the end. it would not be right for her, if not him. she chooses what's right for her in the end.

favourite season

I'm gonna be a wee bit controversial and say book 1 had the best conception of katara's arc from student to master and really saw her grow and flourish, from someone yelling at her brother' oafish prejudice to a real master, that really solidified her as an idealist and presented that as the strength that is, that showed her struggling with petty jealousy of aang's progress and had her stumble in ways that made her character comeplling and interesting - like what an introduction to her character! book 2 had some fantastic moments but i can't think of anything particularly remarkable about hee character arc - largely because it tied into aang's romantic arc i think at this point. book 3 had some absolutely fantastic moments (scam queens katara and toph!! painted lady!! southern raiders!! the final agni kai) that really shone but also book 3 lays a lot of groundwork for fanon i hate (e.g. katara as the mom friend - wish that headcanon would die tbh)

fuck there's a lot of good ones but my underrated fave is when sokka says he's kissed a girl before but she's never met her and katara says 'Who? Gran-gran? I've met gran-gran' and it's bruuutaaall

there's some ships i like in AU situations - yuetara is actually one i lov, especially with waterbender yue, i just love the whole sea/moon thing as well as katara and yue rebelling in loud/quiet ways, being girlfriends who refuse to have their lives defined by the expectations of older men, who have a great sense of duty towards their nations and won’t let gendered expectations stop them.

and most of you know i like the messy drama of katara/azula in a lighter AU situation where they're like, school or academic rivals, and the legacy of imperialism isn’t quite so personal (and azula makes better choices, obviously), but it’s not as much as i “ship” them as i just find the potential dynamic interesting, they’re both driven by a sense of duty for their home, it’s just that means *very* different things depending if you’re SWT or FN.

none of them are OTPs though - they’re more just fun thought experiments

katara & sokka - absolutely love their sibling dynamic its amazing. both have been impacted negatively by the shit in their lives and are not always dealing with it in functional ways but theyre there for each other, through thick and thin, always have each other's backs, they roast each other and bicker and sometimes make stupid decisions and sometimes lash out but at the end of the day their love pulls through, they’re able to work past those conflicts.

katara & aang - honestly while i feel kataang was just so poorly executed in the show (listen guys I just can’t after ember island players, i know that was a bad episode, but i can’t) & i cant imagine katara wanting to leave the south pole after the war for long spells (it would have to be long distance love, lots of profound and heartfelt letters and occasional visits, if anything, but i dont know if that’s what katara wants or needs? so maybe it wouldn’t pan out?), but regardless, i really do think these two had a life-changing friendship where each really represented hope for each other, that's at the core of it, they both truly believe in each other, and inspired each other. katara & aang good.

oh oh OH i also think that katara, while primarily a combat bender during the war, actually takes to healing a lot more after the show and gets proper healing training at some point with the help of a trained medical expert and maybe yugoda. tbh i feel like the show was a bit dismissive of healing as an ability - i feel like having that is *extremely* useful in any combat situation, you always have a medic on hand - but i understand why katara, who wanted to be recognised as powerful regardless of her gender, and wanted to hold herself in a fight alongside sokka & aang, pushed for combat waterbending training because that is what 'powerful' looks like to her in the moment. obviously katara is capable of incredible healing feats (see: saving aang) but i think given we see her as a healer in lok (not a decision i necessarily disagree with) would mean a shift in focus. i think katara actually comes to realise she likes healing a great deal, but really she excels in all aspects of waterbending and is the south’s most respected master who helped rejuvenate southern style waterbending  

unpopular opinion

the main reason people think katara is straight is because we see her have very few meaningful interactions with other girls outside of toph. ATLA as a show is a bit romance obsessed, and very heteronormative in that regard, and so interactions with minor characters almost always line up with a potential crush for sokka or katara, and later, zuko (suki, haru, jet, yue, song, jin....). we rarely see katara build friendships with other girls and it’s such a damn shame.

a wish

the version of the puppetmaster we saw was actually fire nation propaganda, i feel like katara would have felt deep compassion for a prisoner of war and after maybe some clashes, would have agreed to help smuggle her out of the fire nation and secure passage home for hama, and tried to assure her that she still has a place there. the treatment of hama in that episode was awful (but also hama was written to be almost cartoonishly evil, very much an evil witch in her cottage in the spooky woods? like the whole horror movie / spooky story opening was such a big tell) and tbh i reject the thesis that we saw ‘katara’s dark potential’ in that episode completely, or that bloodbending as a power is inherently dark, or katara’s use of it to stop hama ‘corrupted’ her. I feel like katara might feel this way as a teenager perhaps but with time (she can be a little black and white at times), and especially with more training as a healer, i think she might realise that’s not the case, she’ll realise that she was right to try and oppose hama, her elder (she was lashing out rather than really trying to oppose the fire nation), and it wasn’t a betrayal of her or her beliefs, but also her use of bloodbending wasn’t wrong or evil inherently at all? and maybe she’d find ways to use it for healing purposes? anyway my wish is that, i like the idea that they meet again, speak about their differences, reconcile a little / come to an understanding, and katara learns more from hama again
