âHow long before my alarm?â He asks with a content sigh as Evan bites on his skin, then soothes it with his tongue. He has a shift in a few hours, and heâs already dreading having to leave the bed and his gorgeous boyfriend, who happens to have a day off. Their time off hasnât been aligning a whole lot lately, and itâs been driving them both crazy.
âUh-â Evan raises his head, his warmth disappearing from Tommyâs neck for a second. âLike an hour.â
âHm. Then why am I awake already?â Tommy tries to go for an annoyed tone, but he canât. He canât be mad when his boyfriend is right next to him, kissing him all over, and all but humping him.
âBecause your boyfriend needs your attention.â Evan whispers right into Tommyâs ear, and then grinds his hard cock against Tommyâs ass, as if to punctuate his words.
âOh, he does?â Tommy tilts his head more towards Evan, but his eyelids are still heavy with sleep, he only manages to squint a little. Though Tommyâs dick is waking up much quicker than the rest of him, already tenting his boxers.

âHonestly, I donât think itâs a good idea, Callieâ, Torcall sombrely warned you, his eyes locking on yours over the wooden spoon he tightly gripped close to his mouth.
âAnd what would you have me do then?â, you sneeringly replied back.
Your brother-in-law had been pestering you the whole morning about what your plan was to win your lands back. You knew the long game was your best bet â you didnât have the numbers to face Rome on your own. Your athair had tried and failed in his attempt. Another defeat like the one your people suffered in Raedykes would destroy your clan. It would wipe you out off the map â everything your ancestors had worked for, gone under the crushing yoke of the Romans.
âI would not have you whoring yourself out to a fucking Roman, thatâs for sure. Your athair would be so disappointed in you.â He snapped back at you, anger flowing in his words.
His reply stung badly, so much you unconsciously crossed your arms at chest level â an unvoluntary gesture to protect yourself from his accusation.
âThatâs beyond the pointâ, you barked, the green of your irises burning like hellish fire. âAnd my father would be just fine with my decision. Need I remind you who he married me off to?â
Torcallâs knuckles went white as his fingers pressed around the spoon harshly. You cocked a brow, unwavering.
Ten years ago, your athair had reached an agreement with Iain of Am Baile Ăr(Insh), the lord of Badenoch whose state was a few miles south of your birthplace. For as long as Caledonia had formed, there had always been internal disputes about who was the rightful heir to the Overlord title.
The clan who held the stronghold at Inbhir Nis had historically always been considered the legitimate titleâs holder. Your family had been the keepers of the land for as long as anyone could remember. But it didnât stop those who were thirsty for power, so your father had to prove himself over and over again.
After several bloody skirmishes, Murdoch of Inbhir Nis had crowned himself, yet again, lord and master of Caledonia. Iain had been a strong contestant against your father and was only appeased when your athair offered you as a consolation prize to him, as if you were a lamb up for sale at the local market. A cheap one at that.
At the tender age of six and ten, you had been shipped off to an unknown land to be wife to a man you had never seen before. The next ten years of your life would be living hell â what you had to endure, you would not wish it upon your worst enemy.
The memories that would crawl back at night would still wake you up, a cold sweat trickling down your spine every time. Abuse in your arranged marriage was your bread and butter. Every time you returned home under the prying, controlling eyes of Iain or your family came to visit, you would lie to them about the new bruise on your cheek, the limp you had for a couple of weeks or the teeth marks on your neck. Murdoch was the last to realise, unable to come to terms with the destiny he had forced upon you. And by the time he did, there was not much he could do without infuriating Iain, without risking another war.
The peace of the Caledonians outweighed your suffering, after all. You were not worth such a bloodshed.
So you pushed through it all and survived â for family, for clan, for honour. Never resented your father either; he had a duty to protect his tribe, and so did you. For a decade you dragged yourself across ember and ash, until you finally caught a break six months ago.
Iain was found dead in the marital bed, his eyes wide open and his expression struck with horror, as if a wraith had taken his life. At the mature age of six and sixty, you had been his third wife, so when his only son and heir from his first marriage ascended, you were no longer needed. With no family of your own tying you to that ghostly place, you packed your things and swiftly left, the Will' O' the Wisps guiding you home.
âI didnât mean it that wayâ, his answer burst out in a pitiful whisper. One of your eyebrows raised even further into your forehead. âIâm sorry.â
You sighed, unfolding your arms and looking at the cold broth in front of you. Grabbing the spoon again, you swirled it in the bowl aimlessly. You didnât need your most trusted ally questioning your decisions, not when the whole clan depended on your actions. At least he was doing so in the intimacy of a crannog and not in front of your folk.
âIâm just trying my best, Torcall. I know I can win our freedom back, so I need you to have some faith in me. How I get to the endgame is up to me. The means justify the end.â Your words were imbued with unfaltering determination.
âI do trust you, Callie. With my life and the lives of my childrenâ, he mumbled solemnly with a curtsy as his eyes drifted to the other end of the room.
Your niece and nephew, whom you loved dearly, were obliviously playing with some wooden swords their father had handcrafted a while back. They were six years of age, both born during the cold winter months. The twins had filled the blackhole in your heart, one that your marriage had not been able to lade.
âAh, ye brute!â Your nephew, Daimh, let the sword slip from his fingers to hold his hand close to his chest. âYouâve hurt me, Iona!â
His little feet dabbed towards you, raising his injured hand in the air.
âAuntaidh (auntie), Iona has broken my fingers, look!â, he wept while you cradled his hand.
âOh, come on here, mo laochain (my little hero). Let me seeâ, you said while rubbing his hand between yours and kissing it where it hurt.
âWhat a wimpy!â, Iona complained, running to her father. âI won, daddy!â Her proud, high-pitched voice squealed in excitement, and you couldnât hide your smile.
âIâm going to tell mĂ thair (mother)!â, Daimh blew raspberries at his sister, and she reciprocated from the other side of the table.
Your heart sunk to your stomach at the mention of Maisie, tears welling up at the corner of your eyes. Both you and Torcall had explained to them that their mother had been reunited with Dhuosnos, God of the Dead, but they were too little to fully understand what that entailed, what it truly meant.
âWhen is mama coming back from Tech Duinn (House of Dhuosnos), daddy? I miss her dearlyâ, Ionaâs innocent words ripped at your heart.
Torcall and you exchanged mournful glances.
âAye, me tooâ, exclaimed Daimh as he snuggled in your arms.
âSo do we, sweet pea, so do weâ, you mumbled as you kissed the crown of his blonde head.
Daimh stirred in your arms, his green eyes piercing yours. He looked so much like his mother that it was painful. Maisie and you had the same emerald irises, although she had been blonde. Daimh and Iona were living images of her.
âWhen can we go home? This place smells funnyâ, your nephew questioned while he sat on your lap.
You wished you could tell him. Your whole family had been living in the castle that now Marcus Acacius occupied. Torcall and his children could not risk staying there, not when the threat of death was hanging above them. If the Romans knew your sister had offspring, they would hunt them down.
Despite the adversity, you had been lucky in a sense. The highlanders had always been wary of strangers â outsiders brought tragedy with them, in the way of disease or war. The Caledonians had learnt to keep their distance, to be extremely cautious. So, when the General and his army arrived, no one spoke of your family, not even when questioned.
Your people, despite the differences that had them at each otherâs throats some years back, were loyal to you. And it was their fealty what enabled your plan, what allowed you to pretend, to just be another servant girl.
So Torcall, his children and you had sought refuge in the skirts of town. Your uncail Aengusâ wife had welcomed you into her home.
The crannog was a circular hut with a straw roof, the walls made of mud, rocks, wood. There was only one big, round room, with an open hearth which kept the inside warm. The open shelving gathered some necessary clutter, but there were many things scattered around the place. There were only three beds lined up against the wall, which meant that you shared a bed with Iona and Torcall with his son. Your cousins had moved out to the small barn just a few feet away to make room for you.
It was cramped and very modest in comparison to the thick walls of your castle, but it was a roof over your heads. You were extremely grateful to her. Your heart still wept at the memory of telling her the demise of her husband.
âSoon we will, but in the meantime, we are keeping Bonnie and her sons company. And this place smells just fine. Are you sure itâs not you, you stinky little deamhan (demon)?â, you jested, pinching his nose and then tickling his ribs.
His laughter was a soothing balm on your aching, longing heart.
âWas everything as expected, Dominus?â His Roman servant asked, his head bowed to him.
Marcus patted the corners of his mouth with the rag on his lap and then nodded to Atticus. The food was somewhat decent, a venison stew with some root vegetables he could not identify. The bread, unsurprisingly, was a bit stale, so he had left it untouched.
The great hall was lugubrious, silence filling up the atmosphere. There were two other maids in the room, cowering in a corner with averted eyes. They only spoke a barbarian language he had no wish to learn. Communication with the natives was extremely difficult, as they seemed to be uneducated.
But there was one lass who knew how to speak Latin â you, Callie.
He wondered where you had gone. Marcus had not seen you since your encounter in his new-found bedchamber. It had been three days since then and with each passing one, he found himself searching the room for you. There was something about you that had reeled him in but was unsure of what it was. Maybe it was the eerie, magical aura that surrounded your fiery hair â or maybe it was the way you carried yourself, the way you had briefly but decisively held his gaze. The way you quickly retreated â unwillingly.
Marcus imperceptibly shook his head and waved his hand at Atticus, motioning for him to pour another cup of the bitter wine.
âYesâ, he simply replied, bringing the wooden chalice to his lips.
Atticus signalled the young women to come forward and they quickly cleared the table of dishes and cutlery. When he was alone with his servant, away from enemiesâ ears, he signalled at Atticus, who quickly stepped forward.
âFetch my commanders and bring them here. There are matters I need to discuss with themâ, Marcus demanded of him.
His attendant curtsied and vanished from the great hall, leaving him alone.
Marcus was taking in every detail of the room, of the tapestries and their stories, when a scattering sound distracted him. He thought to hear a commotion, then a blasphemy. Curious, he stood up, stepped off the dais and sauntered towards the double doors. The door was slightly ajar, so he only had to push it for it to swing open.
There was nothing in the corridor except for a distinct scent. Rosemary and thyme with a hint of something unrecognisable, he identified. A smell that had loitered in his bedchamber once you left. Wrinkling his aquiline nose, he caught something in the corner of his eye. He turned to see how a shadow dissipated at the end of the corridor.
Furrowing his brows and in long strides, Marcus covered the distance, tracking the distinct aroma â like a lost man after the beckoning of a nymph, he followed. As he was about to turn the corner, he almost collided with Maximus, Valerius and Cassius.
âMy lord,â Cassius was the first to talk, âwe were on our way to you. You wished to see us?â
Marcus tried to conceal his confusion at the sight of the three men. With his head slightly tilted, he asked, âDid you encounter anyone on your way to me, Commander?â
Cassius slowly shook his head no, baffled by the question. âNo, Dominus, no one. Were you expecting someone else?â
The General hmphed, taciturn. He needed to be cautious â if the tapestries were right, ungodly, mythical creatures lingered between the walls of the castle. Evil ones at that.
âWorry notâ, Marcus rapidly dismissed. âFollow me, gentlemen.â
The four men sat at the rectangular table on the dais, Marcusâ fingers drumming on the wood as Maximus flattened a piece of parchment before him.
âThese are some names that have been thrown around in the last few days, people who may act on their rebellious comments. Our spies have been trying their best to mix in with the townies, but they are tough nuts to crack. They are wary even of the people who speak their own languageâ, Maximusâ index finger slid down the list as he talked.
Marcusâ hand darted forward and pinched one corner of the parchment, pulling it towards him. His eyes scanned the unfamiliar names.
The barbarians did not use surnames, which spoke to their lack of sophistication. Instead, they used patronyms and the land where they were born, so the list made it difficult to identify individuals who might belong to the same family. Knowing what families were a menace would be a great advantage, one they did not have.
âThere seems to be a recurrent name hereâ, Marcus paused, his fingertip pointing to the words scribbled in lead ink. âSeumas and Anndra of Dail an Eich (Dalneigh), sons of Aengus. Who is this Aengus?â, he questioned, looking up to the frowning faces.
âWe are not sure, Dominus. As I said, the villagers are not talking muchâ, Cassius replied, his fingers intertwined, resting atop of the wooden table.
âWell, find out then. I donât care how you get the information. Just get itâ, Marcusâ back reclined against the chair he was sat on. He felt like they were wasting his time with trivial details. He needed more than that.
âYou didnât get Murdochâs wife to talk, even when she was hanged half dead in a cage off the main tower, after being brutally tortured and whatever else you inflicted upon her, and you expect us to get names just like that?â, Valeriusâ insolence spoke for him.
Marcusâ eyes lazily locked on his commanderâs. He should have his ill-mannered tongue cut out for such disdainful arrogance. Valeriusâ Adamâs apple bobbed in his throat as he forcefully swallowed, his eyes slightly widened, realising his impertinence.
Whispers flew around the town; his name being cursed from mouth to mouth. Marcus was not too worried about whatever rumours they could spread about him. They probably would be true â he was no saint.
But Marcus had not been the one who had ordered such distasteful death upon MĂČrag, wife of Murdoch. Agricola did, with no respect for his name when he dropped it mid-sentence. Marcus did not even lay an eye on her, even less a hand.
Let them all think what they might. Marcus was used to being the scapegoat of the governor â when something went wrong, Agricola would blame him. And when something went right, he would just take credit for himself, the evil, power-thirsty rat.
He looked at Valerius dead in his eyes, one cocked brow showing his mild incredulity.
âDo you have something to say, Valerius? I hear a certain condemning tone in your words?â, his voice was flat, devoid of emotion, but the reality was there was a raging fire within him he could not make manifest.
âAbsolutely not, my lordâ, the man bowed his head to him, his knuckles white.
âThen be gone. All of you. Find those two men or I will have you hanged too.â
The resolution in his tone scared the seasoned warriors, who quickly said their goodbyes and hurriedly left the premises.
Marcusâ elbows sunk in the wooden table, his fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. He was angry, but amongst all, he was tired â tired of masking, of cleaning up after Agricolaâs hideous actions, of power plays, of trickery, betrayal and deception. He was surrounded by it all.
At eight and forty, he was tired of war and conquest. He had seen it all, lived it all. If retirement would be an option, he would gladly take it. But he knew â he would wield a sword till the day he died in a godforsaken battlefield, till Pluto welcomed him with open arms. Rome would not have him any other way.
Marcus Acacius was truly exhausted.
So it was him who had your beautiful mĂ thair tortured and hanged in a cage until she greeted death. Your blood boiled as your breath quickened. The rage flickered inside you like wild flames burning down an entire civilisation.
When the rangers announced your arrival to a few selected loyal men who had stayed behind, they got out at night to cut the ropes holding the cage your mother had been thrown in. They did not want you to see such act of savagery.
Your kinsmen had really tried to conceal how badly damaged your motherâs body was. Despite the heartache, you had been grateful that they had gone to the effort of making her somewhat presentable. But one look at her mangled body had been enough to understand what type of wickedness you were up against.
In the dead of night, you had buried MĂČrag, the woman who so selflessly gave you life, in the outskirts of town. Just like her other children and husband, she would not rest under the familyâs chambered cairns. Your family had been wiped out of history as if they were mere droplets in a vast ocean of human tragedy.
With one ear flat against the wooden door to the great hall, you unknowingly squinted your eyes, trying to listen to the rest of the conversation. If someone caught you eavesdropping, you would have a lot of explaining to do. But so far your spying was being productive â you would need to warn your cousins when you got home that night.
The faint sound of approaching footsteps made your heart jolt in your chest.
âCac (shite)!â, you swore, frantically looking for a place to stow yourself away.
Picking up your skirt so you would not trip, you hid in a nearby garderobe. The cupboard smelt sweet and musty â barrels of wine decorated the whole height of the stone walls. The scent was so intense, you felt it soaking through your skin, appeasing the craze that had a tight grip on your mind. The darkness that surrounded you only accentuated your sense of smell. Could you get inebriated just with the sugary aroma of grape juice?
When the booted treads slowly faded away, you quietly pushed the door open, emerging back into the cold corridor â the contrasting temperature between the garderobe and the hallway gave you goosebumps. Palm flat against the wood and the other hand tightly gripping the iron pull handle, you gently shoved the door back into its frame, hoping to make no noise.
âWhat are you doing?â, a deep, masculine voice startled you, making you jump on the spot.
A set of warm, firm arms wrapped around you as you stumbled with your feet. They enveloped you so steadfastly, your body involuntarily relaxed against the person behind you. Leaning back, your back met the cold touch of metal.
Swallowing a profanity that would bring a repenting clergyman down to his knees, you turned around, in the arms that held you tight, to face the embodiment of hate. Your hate.
Marcus Acacius was standing, all righteous and proud, intimately close to you. He was wearing an impeccable white armour with golden details. Two flaxen griffins adorned the center of the plackart, their claws wrapping around a floral design. Linen straps, snug around his hips, fell from his waist, covering the fauld and the tasset underneath.
Marcusâ body was a fountain of warmth, even with all the layers enfolding his frame. His arms, although tense around you, did not feel suffocating â in fact, they were almost coddling you into a state of ataraxia as your brain quietened. His hug exuded a sense of security you had not felt in years â as if nothing nor no one could ever harm you as long as you stayed in Marcusâ embrace.
You traced the topography of his plackart with your fingers, your palms resting against the alloy, as your eyes peeked up âhe was considerably taller than youâ and were met with the fervour of two brown irises. Their gravity pulled you in for an eternal second. With your face near his, you picked up on the tired bearing on his face, the wrinkles around his eyes, the hard press of his lips. A kempt but patchy beard coated his jawline, and salt and peppered hair curled at the nape of his thick, muscular neck â a stray silver lock caressing his forehead, asking to be tucked away.
Your fingertips suddenly itched with longing, your eyes slightly widened, and your mouth partially parted. And then you came back to reality with the full force of your conscience yapping at you. What the hell? You had to control the contortion of your face so your disappointment would not be evident. Itâs because I want to slap him so bad, was your afterthought.
Something changed in his expression â Marcus suddenly let you go, leaving you cold again. As if it was a rehearsed move, you both took a step back, breaking the electric contact that snapped between your bodies.
You now realised his clean image was a shocking contrast to how you first met him. Covered in mud, blood and sweat, his untamed expression as he dispatched your father still haunted you at night. And that was how you had to remember him. Sinking his gladius in your fatherâs belly. And nothing else.
âWell?â, the General insisted after clearing his throat, his eyebrows knitting together as he folded his arms.
You rapidly lowered your gaze when you realised you had been looking at him too intently, too directly. A maid would have fainted at the audacity you had just shown him. But you were no maid â albeit he was not privy of such detail for obvious reasons.
You hoped he didnât notice, although you could feel his eyes studying you eagerly.
âIâ I was looking for wine, Dominus.â You faked the stammering in an attempt to convey innocence. âCormag, the cook, wants a very specific wine to accompany your supper, Dux Meus (My General/Leader). I was making sure we had it.â
âAnd what wine is that, if I dare ask?â, he pressed with a steely voice.
Thalla gu taigh na galla (go to hell), you thought, browsing your brain for a quick reply.
âItâs a fine wine imported from Carmo, my lord.â Your father had been a wine enthusiast, so you knew some places he had his wine shipped from. Not that it really meant anything to you, anyway.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw his arms falling to his sides, his threatening posture softening.
âCarmo? In the Baetic region of Hispania?â, Marcusâ incredulous voice made you glance up at him through your long eyelashes.
You nodded, your fingers laced at your front as you bowed your head again, showing a deference you didnât really feel towards him. And you prayed there was at least a few drops left of said wine in one of the barrels, or you would be in trouble come dinner.
âThatâs one of my favouritesâ, he let slip and you instantly knew he didnât mean to say it out loud.
Feigning bravery, you fanned your eyelashes back at him, a half-smile softening your lips. The General almost looked mortified at the fact of letting a stranger know about his likes. You could see it in his eyes â the brief moment of asking himself, âWhat have I just said?â Although he seemed all stoic and unattainable, he was just a man. Just like any other.
âIs that so?â You did not wait for a reply you knew would never come. âIâll try and remember that, Dominus, to make sure we never run out.â
He was a hard man to read, you would give him that. His expression didnât flinch, as if your words had gone over his head. The only sign he had actually listened was a subtle tic on his jaw.
You just needed to drop some hints here and there, let him brew. If you were too obvious with your intentions, Marcus would become suspicious. You knew nothing about the man except he was a cold-blooded murderer, but perceived he was observant. Probably too observant.
âIf youâll excuse me, my lord, I wish to retire now so I can attend to my tasks.â Asking for permission was not something that came naturally to you, but it was a trained response you had learnt from your late husband.
âTake your leave thenâ, he granted, his hands hiding on his back.
You curtsied. âThank you, Dux Meus.â
Marcus turned on his heels in a swift whoosh, the sword swaying in front of him, his fingers gripping the handle tight. He intuited his opponentâs next move before it happened, so he bent his knees and ducked his head right under the swing of Maximusâ gladius. With a wild, toothy smile, Marcus pulled back, weighing the blade on his left hand.
âSo predictableâ, he teased the commander, who was an old friend of his.
If one could have friends in the midst of war, that was. Their friendship easily transformed depending on the circumstances â in war matters, Maximus knew to respect Marcus above everything else. Outside of that, they just were two friends with a long history behind them.
âIâm being gentle, lord General. We have spectators, I donât want to embarrass you. I know your ego is as fragile as a roseâs petalâ, Maximus chaffed, a grin taking over his mouth as they circled each other like two lions on the gladiatorâs pit.
Marcusâ tunnel vision had him so tuned in on his friendâs advances, he had not realised that a small group of people had gathered around the makeshift arena. Feeling a sudden heaviness weighing him down, Marcus combed the gathered faces in one sweep.
Until his eyes locked in on yours. He saw a glimpse of wonder metamorphosing into surprise in your emerald greens â then you quickly withdrew your eyes from his at the realisation of getting caught staring.
There was something about you that drew him in â something mysterious, uncanny, but also strangely enticing. Exciting. Your eyes spoke of mischief, of adventure, of the unknown. Of something eerie, almost witchy. The flickering, iridescent fire within them had him under a spell for a brief moment.
Marcus vividly remembered holding you against his chest, your soft curves perfectly moulding to his hard edges. Even through the armour, he had felt the heat your body irradiated, the way it seeped through to envelop him, soothe him. For a moment, having you between his arms felt just right. And that thought had unsettled him gravely, letting go of you as such wild, unnerving concept sank in â his mind point-blank rejecting the notion.
Despite his inner refusal, how you looked back at him would plague him. For days and nights on end.
Out of the corner of his eye, Marcus watched as Maximus inched forward, the sword aiming at his open flank. Just in the nick of time, the Generalâs steel deflected the attack.
âGetting distracted? Thatâs unusual of you, Marcusâ, the commander jeered at him, closing in.
Marcus scoffed at his words, bluffing. But the reality was that Maximus had hit the nail in the head. Not that he was going to acknowledge it in public anyway. If he was to successfully bring Maximus down, he needed to focus on the task at hand and not think about a green-eyed nymph.
Studying his adversaryâs body language, his feet dragged on the sand. Maximus was on edge, tense, too focused on his sword, so Marcus wagered a distraction would tip the scales in his favour. Maintaining eye contact, he slowly knelt, the fingers of his non-occupied right hand extended, palm down. Maximusâ brows wrinkled when he saw Marcus getting a fistful of sand and the General knew he had the diversion he was looking for.
With Maximus focused on his right hand, too worried with a cloud of sand that would get in his eyes, Marcus took the chance, quickly stood up and swung his heavy sword against his rivalâs left loin. Maximus did not have time to prepare for the impact and so dropped to the ground.
Marcus smiled with sufficiency, straightening out his aching back, and offered a hand to his old friend.
With a grunt, Maximus accepted his gesture and got up, palming Marcusâ back soundly.
âYou treacherous man, making me believe you were going to blind meâ, he quipped as they both started to walk out of the circle people had formed around them.
âThere is no treachery in the art of warâ, Marcus replied, patting his friendâs back in playful jest.
A loud snort made Marcus look around him. He had no time to fully study your face, but he could swear you had made that disapproving noise before turning on your heels and trotting off.
Confusion and a smidge of curiosity settled in him â what had he done to gain your dissent when a minute ago awe darkened your eyes? The sudden change in your attitude left a lingering question in the back of his head as he and Maximus ushered towards the barracks in the northwest corner of the bailey.
âBut you shouldnât be serving, mo bhean-uasal (my lady)â, whispered the young lass, her hands twisting in her lap with nervousness.
âShush, Brighid, lower your tone.â Anxiously you checked out your surroundings, ensuring you were alone. You were relieved to know you were. âYou cannae refer to me like that. Iâm just Callie now, remember?â
Upon your arrival to Inbhir Nis, Torcall and your fatherâs retinue ânow yours, you guessedâ had made everyone aware that the Romans thought you dead and hence, concealing your identity was of utmost importance. A slip of a tongue and you would be hanging in a cage too. Every passing day you feared someone might forget and show you deference publicly â but you had to trust that no one would run off at the mouth and rat you out.
âDuilich (sorry), mo bhâ Callie. IâI promise I didnât mean toâ, she profusely apologised, her big wide eyes begging for your pardon. The wee lass could not stop fidgeting.
âI know, I knowâ, you tried to calm her down, placing your hand on her forearm. âBut please, I need to take your place tonight.â
âCormag will fire me for not turning up. I cannae afford that, my family depends on me.â Her pleading plucked some fast beats out of your heart.
âDonât fret about it, lass. Iâll speak to that old crank of a man, he owes me. Youâll get paid, awright? Heâll be fine with it, I promise.â You gently squeezed her forearm, so your words would sink in.
Her eyes broadened in understanding. Before the girl could think about her actions, she jolted forward, her arms wrapping around your shoulders. You could only smile at her relief and let out a soft cackle when Brighid lumbered back, mortified.
âIâm so sorry, do Ghras (Your Grace).â Her excitement was so palpable the poor girl didnât notice the second blunder.
âBRIGHID!â, a raspy threat left your tongue as you jerked her closer to you by the elbow. âFor the love of MorrĂŹgan, do watch your mouth!â
The young servant covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes speaking of self-reproach as it dawned on her. âIâll have it sewnâ, she muttered with great remorse.
The guilt splayed across her heart-shaped face brought a smirk to your lips. âOff you go now, before your runny tongue gets me into trouble.â
Brighid scurried away towards the barbican, and you hurried along to the kitchens. You followed the tangled web of corridors and passages thoughtlessly â you had played hide and seek countless times with your siblings between the stone walls, there was no nook nor cranny you were not familiar with.
The air got denser as you approached, the thick smoke of the open hearth filling your lungs. Repressing a cough, you entered the galley as good olâ Cormag was shouting orders at the helping lads. The head cook had an aging face, creases around his grey eyes and bulbous nose, and a thick bush of white hair â hair strands shooting in every direction, almost comically. He was short and round around the belly, living proof of his good, delicious cooking.
âKeep fanning the fire, ye lazy ass! Donât you see itâs going to die out? Faster, stronger! Arenât you supposed to be young and full of life?!â, Cormag had wrapped his thick fingers around the brittle wrists of the lad, forcing his feeble arms up and down, fingers tight around a thin plank of wood. âTiugainn (come on), with more enthusiasm, ye numpty!â
âDo you really think thatâs how you motivate the young lads to do a good job, Cormag?â You questioned his teaching approach, with folded arms and a cocked brow.
An oath escaped his mouth as the cook turned around, his face downcast at your reprimand. âCallie!â
Thank the gods someone remembered how to approach you now. It came easier to Cormag though, considering that he was almost like family to you. The old man had seen you grow, having served your father since before you were even born. He was there, on the background, to wave you goodbye every time you had to return to Am Baile Ăr. And each time you came back, he had a full plate of haggis with a side of neeps and tatties waiting for you.
âNo wonder your apprentices quit so fast if you treat them like that, Cormag. Have you no manners?â You kidded â the man had the filthiest mouth of the shire.
âI was raised by an ogre, young lady, of course I donâtâ, he jokingly replied, cleaning his dirty hands on the apron tied around his round belly.
âAye, and Nessie was your pet. Iâve heard that story before awright. I am still to see proof of such claims though.â Unfolding your arms you approached him, immediately going in for a bear hug.
Cormag palmed your back enthusiastically and you circled his stout frame, sinking in the comfort of his presence. In the blink of an eye, you were a five-year-old crybaby being consoled by a younger Cormag because there were no more mutton pies left that you could shove down your tiny mouth.
âI heard you were back, fear beag (little one). Wondered when youâd come visit this old git.â With a last squeeze, he took a step back, his hands placed on your shoulders. âKnow youâve probably heard this a thousand times now, but Iâm truly sorry for your loss.â
His whisper was loaded with a heavy affection that shot your heart down to your stomach. Pressing your lips to stop your face from contorting at the memory of being alone in this world, you nodded, almost frantically, and sniffed. His eyes were a reflection of yours â the friendship between your athair and Cormag had been a staple in your life for as long as you could remember.
âBut letâs not get all teary now!â, his demeanour changed as he rubbed your shoulders before taking a step back. âGot something for you.â
He turned around to rummage through a rattan basket on one of the counters. Cormag exclaimed an enthusiastic âHa!â when he got his hands on what he was looking for. Then he presented his discovery to you with a flourish that made you crow.
When you saw the peachy plum on the palm of his hand, you almost squealed. âPlums!â You quickly snatched it, afraid he would take it away.
âI arranged for these to be brought from Fachabair (Fochabers). The cook who serves the clan chief there is an old friend of mine.â
âBut Cormag, plums are not in season yet!â You marvelled at the sight, munching on the delicious fruit eagerly. Your eyes almost rolled to the back of your head.
âI know.â He winked at you mysteriously, but you didnât press the matter if it meant you could get your hands on some more plums.
âI did come to you with a favour to askâ, you batted your eyelashes at him, anticipating his disapproval.
He looked at you, inquisitorial â it was his turn to fold arms at the chest. Cormag snapped his tongue as if to say, âdo go onâ.
âI already convinced Brighid so you cannae be mad at her. In fact, I promised her you wouldnât.â You grinned at him, his face already puckering with exasperation. âIâm taking her place tonight as a serving maid.â
âHave you lost your damn mind, lass? Nay, Iâm not having itâ, he quickly dismissed you, grunting.
âIâm not asking for permission. I need to be there, Iââ Just in time, you remembered that the two lads were still running around the fireplace, trying to keep the flames alive. âIâll fill you in later, but I have to be there, thereâs no discussion about it.â
âWhat? Serving that Roman scoundrel? Thereâs more royal blood in you than there is in him.â He was more offended than you were.
You laughed, patting his forearm. The old man already hated the Romans more than you did, and that was difficult to accomplish.
âAye, and thatâs not the worst bit, Cormagâ, you teased him, because you knew he would lose his mind with rage.
âEnlighten meâ, he said between gritted teeth.
âWe are serving the Corma wine tonight with supperâ, you pursed your lips, watching his reaction.
His round face turned all shades of red, and his nostrils flared. If it was physically possible, his ears would be steaming too, like a ceramic pot with boiling water over the open fire.
âNAY, OVER MY DEAD FUCKING BODY!â, he exploded, shaking his arms over his head in disbelief, and you burst into laughter. Cormag was too expressive. âAh, no, NO. We are not wasting such finery on that murderous cunt!â
You blinked rapidly at him to appease his fury, but his rage just gleamed brighter.
âWell⊠I kinda told him we would. You winnae make me look like a liar, right, Cormag?â, you muttered, as if you were a child who had committed the grave felony of stealing a sweet off the counter.
âYou did WHAT?!â, he snorted angrily.
âTĂŹoraidh (bye)!â, you effusively waved him goodbye as you bit into the plum, sprinting off and ducking when you heard the wooden spoon flying by your ear.
âTrobhad (come here)!â, but you had already turned the corner into the hallway.
Why he was so taut, he did not fully understand. Marcusâ body was in high alert, and he had his suspicions about the cause.
You were just a woman like any other. Sure, your green eyes flickered like hellfire, your red hair was so bright it looked like you were up in flames, your upturned nose covered in freckles twitched adorably, and the skin on your hands was unusually soft â but that was it, really.
So you were nothing out of the ordinary, he kept telling himself. But it was hard to keep to that line of thought when your breast would brush against his shoulder every time you approached to clear the table from empty plates, when your velvety fingers would briefly caress the back of his hand while reaching for his cutlery, or when you would talk too close to his ear, a tingling sensation on the back of his neck almost making him shiver uncomfortably.
Marcus did not know if you were doing it on purpose or not â your face had an innocent look to it that was hard to read for him. The most prudent thing would be to ignore it all â ignore you. Surely you were only being suggestive in his imagination. And he still had the feeling something had upset you that afternoon when you stormed off after his training session.
âHowâs the wine, Dux Meus?â, your sweet voice trickled from your plush lips like honey.
The way you kept referring to him as Dux Meus unsettled him. The first time you had said it during your encounter in the corridor, it caused certain havoc in his mind â and body.
Although it was appropriate for his title, no one really referred to him like that. My leader, my general, my god. It was the last connotation what made him feel⊠uneasy, for lack of a better word. It just sounded too intimate, the way it would pour from your oval-shaped mouth.
Marcus blamed it on Latin not being your first language. If you knew how seductively it rolled from your lips, he was sure you would stop addressing him like that straight away. Which meant he should correct you, tell you to just stick to Dominus.
But for whatever inexplicable reason, he did not.
âItâs as tasty and earthy as I remember it.â He replied, his fingers wrapping around the chalice with more strength than what was necessary.
You smiled at him, one of your hands gently placed on his right shoulder giving him a subtle squeeze.
âIâm glad to hear it, my lordâ, you mumbled, Marcusâ eyes following the movement of your hand when you broke contact.
You inched forward over his shoulder to grab the glass jug and refill his cup, gifting him with the sight of your generous cleavage â your breasts almost spilling over the neckline of the dark blue, linen dress that so tightly wrapped around your hourglass figure.
Marcus had to swallow hard, tension suddenly building up on his groin. Was he getting hard just by the mere touch of a woman? He sucked in his breath while forcing himself to look forward, not down.
He just nodded in reply, unable to find his voice. If he had talked, he would have just groaned in frustration. Marcus had to readjust his posture as he saw you walking away, your waist evocatively swaying sideways with every step you took.
âIâm sure the wine is not the only tasty thing around here.â
Maximusâ whispered jest forced Marcus to look in his direction, turning to his left. They, along with the other commanders and a few other people of importance, were sat on the table on the dais, facing the crowd. Other tables were scattered around the great hall, where some legionnaires were enjoying a meal and a drink, sharing a joke and bursting in laughter.
âI donât followâ, he grunted, feigning ignorance, before taking a sip.
âOh, you do follow. At least your eyes do.â Maximus mocked him while Marcus just sneered at him, eyes squinting. âNo one would blame you though. We are far away in an unknown land, and we all have needs to satisfy. I myself am considering getting laid tonight.â
âI did not doubt you would.â Men like Maximus had no consideration for their wives.
Neither does Livia, the intrusive thought wiggled its way through his mind. Despite the lack of passion in bed with his spouse, Marcus had been a faithful husband. While others looked for warmth in the folds of a pleasure woman after a battle, the General would tend to his wounds and rest, focusing on what next skirmish lied ahead.
And while he had been loyal although there was never love between them, Livia had been fucking the âlove of her lifeâ, as she had referred to the man stuffing her cunt full during his long absences. Marcus was yet to know his name. What he would do with that information, he did not know.
Thinking of his perfidious wife had an extinguishing effect on him. The strain against his subligaculum (underwear) had softened.
âYouâre too tense, Marcus. You need to relax, have some fun. I bet you two denarii that she will fuck the stress out of you expertly, I can tell.â Maximus pressed maliciously, conscious of how uncomfortable the conversation would make Marcus feel.
âJust shut up, will you?â, Marcus snapped back, tired of his friendâs quips, and downing the drink in his cup.
Maximus laughed it off and turned to talk to Cassius when you sauntered towards the table again, stopping right behind him.
âMore wine, Dux Meus?â, you asked, infusing your honeyed voice with a sweet touch of flirtation.
You bent over his shoulder again, hand lazily looking for the wine jug in front of him. His hazel eyes fell on your bosom again and your nipples involuntarily hardened at the desire you saw in him â you were sure he noticed them peeking through the thin fabric.
In your attempts to arouse him, your body was betraying you, getting warm in all the wrong places. As much as you wanted to be immune to your own provocative games, you were not. But it wasnât him who made you wet with lust, you told yourself. It was your own actions, nothing else. The long game.
But Marcus quickly tamed his expression, grinding his jaw and looking away.
âNo, Iâm okayâ, he rejected your offer, hovering his hand over the chalice so you would not pour more.
You forced your lips into a flat line. You needed the man to let go of his defences. Having him drunk would help with that. But not tonight, apparently.
You nodded.
âOf course, Dominus.â You placed the jug back down on the table, your left breast brushing his right shoulder again.
You bit down your bottom lip, your free fingers curling on the back of his chair. Itâs just the game, you thought to yourself again, your core slick and hot.
Slowly you retreated to the kitchens, fully aware of Marcusâ eyes feasting on your body. You smiled to yourself â he might be a taut General, but he was just a man.
A deceitful man at that, who thought there was no treachery in the art of war. Was that how he defeated your father? With deception? You had been too far to see and hear how the fight between your father and Marcus had unfolded, but having been witness to how the General distracted his opponent that afternoon, you wondered if he had followed similar tactics with Murdoch. If your fatherâs demise was just a byproduct of Marcusâ boldness.
The memory of Marcus being your fatherâs executioner put out the liquid fire in your crotch. And rightly so.
It wasnât long before the Romans started to vanish from the great hall, retreating to the barracks or to town, maybe looking for the comfort only a woman could offer.
When you walked back out to clear the last plates, you saw the General leaving the room. Alone. Where he intended to go you did not know, but you had to make sure he was not considering joining the men in town â if he was to choose a woman to enliven his bed, he should pick you.
âIsla, Iâll be back in a minute.â The lass gave you a puzzled look as the bits you had gathered previously clattered against the wooden table when you let go of them.
You hurried forward to meet him as he swung the double doors open, the cold breeze of the corridor filtering into the great hall.
âDux Meus, wait pleaseâ, you interjected in the hopes he would stop walking.
Indeed, he did. His whole body stiffened, his fingers curling into fists at his sides. You were not sure what to make of that reaction â exasperation or frustration. You hoped for the second, especially the good kind of frustration.
As soon as you reached him, you placed a daring hand on his forearm â an unusual surge of energy sparked at the contact between your skins, giving you goosebumps. You quickly retrieved your hand with certain surprise, the tingling sensation evaporating right after.
âI trust everything was good?â, you queried, tilting your head to one side.
âYes. Now Iâll retire to my bedchambers. Bonum noctis (good night)â, his words dragged for a second, âCallie.â
There it was again, your name falling from his lips as if it belonged to him. It angered and pleased you equally. If he pronounced it like that on purpose you did not know, but it surely felt like it.
Before you could come up with an answer, he trudged to his right and you took a step forward.
âThat is not the way to the main bedchamber, my lord. You should follow this other corridor insteadâ, you pointed to the left.
He paused and turned around to face you. A lingering question danced in his pupils, but whatever it was, he did not say out loud. Instead, he nodded.
âI am aware. However, I have taken a different bedroom.â He did not give you an explanation, but you could have a good guess. Your father always complained his bed was like a blanket of spikey rocks. âI am now lodged in the second tower, the room in the top floor.â
You tamed your face into nothingness, but internally you flinched at his reply. He was sleeping in your room, in your bed. The thought of him naked with your bedlinen draped around his waist and thick legs made you gush. Fuck.
This was unknown territory to you â although you had been married for ten years, you had not known pleasure in the bedchamber. Iain just chased his own release, using you in disgusting ways, proving you that you were the problem, not him â that your womb was barren. You had been told by your friends that fucking was enjoyable for both parties, but you were yet to discover that. Maybe the dampness your legs harboured was a start?
âI seeâ, you curtsied, fingers laced on your back, looking up at him through your long eyelashes.
âHow come you speak Latin?â His question blurted out, catching you completely off guard.
Marcus had a nick for inconvenience, forcing you to come up with lies on the spot. Luckily you were astute and creative.
âMy late father was a scrivener to Murdoch. He taught me how to speak Latin, as it was his favourite language.â
âHe passed?â You simply nodded. âI trust you still have family around though?â
You shook your head no. You killed them all, ye cunt. But you could not express your hatred out loud. Although when the time came, you would. Aye, you definitely would.
âIâm sorry to hear that.â For a second you believed him, his tone almost sorrowful.
âIt was a long time ago.â You lied through your teeth, shrugging. âIâll leave you to your rest now. Oidhche mhath (good night), Marcus.â
You heard a loud sigh being drawn into his lungs, possibly because of your cheekiness â calling him by his first name was a very bold move on your part. Maybe too bold.
Before he could reprimand you for your audacity, you scuttled back into the great hall, a sufficient grin tugging at your lips.

One more scene from Fuuta-Es convos with @waivyjellyfish for now :3 I liked exploring Es' post-canon mindset as an ex-murder investigator... Like my other drabble, I don't have the details worked out but Milgram is over and they're living at the Kajiyamas' now.
What Fuuta didnât know wouldnât hurt him.
Itâs what Es told themself as they slipped into his clothes. Theyâd spotted the outfit at the bottom of Fuutaâs closet a few days ago, then decided to bide their time. With Fuuta and his sister downstairs having breakfast, there was a small window of opportunity now. Â
Es stuck their arm through the red-striped sleeve. They still didnât know what possessed them to put it on.Â
Was it the appeal of something familiar? In a world devoid of all memories, they enjoyed the idea of putting on at least one outfit that theyâd seen hundreds of times on their little music video screen. Is it possible to be comforted by someone elseâs memories?
Was it old habits? Theyâd spent each trial doing anything and everything to feel closer to the prisoners. To take a peek into their minds. To step into their shoes. This was taking it a bit literally, they knew. Although everything was over and they had no reason to connect so deeply to any of the prisoners, Es couldnât get away from the duty theyâd obsessed over for so long.
Maybe it was just their troublesome curiosity, always driving them forward. There was a small part of them that hungered for more information, no matter the reason. They were perfectly aware that putting on Fuutaâs red and blue tracksuit would probably offer them absolutely nothing new, but they had to try. Something might be revealed to them, and they needed to know.Â
Es stood in front of the full length mirror. They turned one way. They turned the other way. They shifted their arms. They cocked their head.
Sure enough, nothing.Â
They took note of the little details. It was a little big on them, (though it wouldnât take them long to catch up to Fuutaâs size). It was neither fashionable nor tacky. The material wasnât exactly comfortable, but at least it felt warm.
But, did it make them feel any closer to Fuuta?
They contemplated a moment, thinking of all that he may have done in the outfit. There were so many classes these pants had walked to, so many arcade coins that these pockets had held. Es wondered if his friends ever nudged the shoulders of the jacket playfully. Maybe they werenât the type. It had probably seen itâs share of all nighters. And also lazy days spent in bed, or sick days laid up on the couch.
They puffed their chest out, thinking of the confidence Fuuta may have had wearing this. They pulled the hood over their hair. It had likely seen just as much as his hesitance. How many times had he sunk into the thick material for an escape? Or was there an opposite effect â did he feel so comfortable in this that he could commit murder?
Es stared at themself.
There came some shuffling out in the hall. Before Es could move, Fuuta was shouting to his sister and bursting into the room.
âWill you get out of my fucking hair if I bring it to you right ââ he froze. âNow...â
Es, too, was frozen in place, their eyes wide.Â
âI-Iâm sorry.â They started unzipping the jacket. âI saw it and⊠I didnât mean to ââ
â â Itâs fine,â Fuuta muttered. He waved his hand dismissively. He started shuffling things around in his desk drawer, angling his head down, out of sight. His voice was strained, though it wasnât as angry as Es had been expecting. âItâs not like Iâm ever gonna wear it again.â
Es carefully folded the jacket over their arm. âI wasnât trying to bring up the past. I was justâŠâ What had they been doing?Â
âI said itâs fine.âÂ
âI know itâs not.â
âYou donât know anything. Wear it every day for all I care. I was just gonna toss it.â
âYou still can. Or, I can.â
âNah.â Fuuta retrieved what he was looking for. He paused in the doorway, taking one last look over his shoulder. âLooks better on you, anyway.â
Es straightened in surprise as he left. They took another look in the mirror. They allowed themself a small smile. They might have undersold how comfortable it was.
Now that they were thinking of it, they did look pretty cool⊠Maybe that was all there was to it.

Mmmmm thoughts for you
In your army days series, what would Jack do if he has to pick between his mission and Mac? (How did they get into that situation?) Heâs still a soldier and has to do his duty and yet this is Mac.
Just wanted your thoughts on this :))
HMMMM
I may be heavily influenced by JStar8 as of right now, but Jack would choose Mac. Every time
Definitely more so after Mac initially saved him from that IED he stumbled on, because before that, Jack chose him out of a sense of duty because Mac was his responsibility, and was a dumb kid that didnât know how the world worked and it served as a kinda teaching moment(?) or something like that
But after that, it was a different sense of duty, like after learning how shit of a childhood Mac had, Jack figured he had to show Mac that there are actually good people in the world
Of course there were horribly difficult decisions, like Mac+Stranger-Jack where Jack had to choose the mission to keep Mac safe,
But like if they were out and like in a big firefight or whatever, and Jack had to make the decision of Get The Bad Guy or Save Mac, itâs Mac. 100% itâs always going to be Mac
Honestly though, Jack doesnât really ever have to make any big decisions, because if thereâs anything where Macâs involved, heâs going to choose whatever option will keep him safe in the long haul

Thank you! I'm appreciated đđ I'm so glad you adored them!
And your MC is Valyrian/Baratheon inspired?? That's so cool! Baratheon always be one of my favourite great houses besides Targs I mean just look at how chill and strong they are, and they used hammers as weapons in fights so freaking cool I love targs but Bobby B supremacy
Hehehe I need to draw Targs!Ominis more, he's so fine with Valyrian hair/eyes and I have my own AU in my head, what if he become the king of 7kingdoms? He would get called the blind king or something and that's sounds cool ngl, Ominys the first of his name, the blind king that's dope
And and and I will draw Seb in this AU as well, I have a feeling he should be a Hightower or maybe Strong but Hightower! Seb sounds so majestic and the green colour suits him đđ©

MBTI SUMMARY.
INTJ / THE ARCHITECT
It can be lonely at the top. As one of the rarest personality types â and one of the most capable â Architects (INTJs) know this all too well. Rational and quick-witted, Architects pride themselves on their ability to think for themselves, not to mention their uncanny knack for seeing right through phoniness and hypocrisy. But because their minds are never at rest, Architects may struggle to find people who can keep up with their nonstop analysis of everything around them.
Architects question everything. Many personality types trust the status quo, relying on conventional wisdom and other peopleâs expertise to guide their lives. But ever-skeptical Architects prefer to make their own discoveries. In their quest to find better ways of doing things, they arenât afraid to break the rules or risk disapproval â in fact, they rather enjoy it.
They bring a single-minded drive to their work, applying the full force of their insight, logic, and willpower. And heaven help anyone who tries to slow them down by enforcing pointless rules or offering poorly thought-out criticism.
This personality type comes with a strong independent streak. Architects donât mind acting alone, perhaps because they donât like waiting around for others to catch up with them. They also generally prefer making decisions without asking for anyone elseâs input. At times, this lone-wolf behavior can come across as insensitive, as it fails to take into consideration other peopleâs thoughts, desires, and plans.
Architects can be single-minded, with little patience for frivolity, distractions, or idle gossip. That said, theyâre far from dull or humorless. Many Architects are known for their irreverent wit, and beneath their serious exteriors, they often have a sharp, delightfully sarcastic sense of humor.
It would be a mistake, however, to view Architects as uncaring. Whatever the stereotypes about their stoic intellect, these personalities feel deeply. When things go wrong or when they hurt others, Architects are personally affected and spend much time and energy trying to figure out why things happened the way that they did. They may not always value emotion as a decision-making tool, but they are authentically human.
Because Architects value truth and depth, many common social practices â from small talk to white lies â may seem pointless or downright stupid to them. As a result, they may inadvertently come across as rude or even offensive when theyâre only trying to be honest.
Architects are full of contradictions. They are imaginative yet decisive, ambitious yet private, and curious yet focused. From the outside, these contradictions may seem baffling, but they make perfect sense once you understand the inner workings of the Architect mind.

MODEL Y/N AND OSCAR PIASTRI ANNOUNCE BABY ARRIVAL IN HILARIOUS INSTAGRAM POST
The speculation is over! After weeks of swirling rumors and eager fan speculation, F1 sensation Oscar Piastri and supermodel Y/N have joyfully confirmed the arrival of their first child. The couple, known for their playful and private relationship, took to Instagram in true Oscar fashion with a post that left fans both laughing and overjoyed.
In a post that quickly went viral, Oscar Piastri shared a snapshot that epitomizes his unique sense of humor. The photo features Oscar reclining in an ice bath, looking every bit the doting father surrounded by a collection of bright yellow rubber ducks. The cheeky caption read, âDad life đđ„â, a perfect blend of coolness and whimsy that fans have come to expect from the Australian racing star.
The image, posted late last night, immediately sparked a flurry of congratulatory messages from fans and fellow celebrities alike. Followers were quick to point out the cleverness of the reveal, with many applauding the coupleâs decision to maintain their privacy while also sharing their joy in such a lighthearted manner.
Y/N, who has been relatively low-key on social media during the pregnancy, reposted the image on her own Instagram story, adding a heart emoji and the simple caption, âOur little duckling đ„â€ïžâ. The subtle, sweet addition was enough to melt hearts around the globe, cementing the coupleâs place as one of the most adored pairs in the celebrity world.
The announcement comes after months of speculation, as eagle-eyed fans had been piecing together clues from Y/Nâs and Oscarâs social media posts and public appearances. The couple, who are high school sweethearts and got married last year, have always been somewhat private about their personal lives, often dodging direct questions about their relationship in interviews. Their decision to keep the pregnancy under wraps until now has been met with a mix of curiosity and respect from the public.
The lighthearted and unconventional nature of their announcement has only endeared them further to their followers. âThis is peak Oscar,â one fan commented. âOnly he would announce becoming a dad with a bunch of rubber ducks. Love it!â
Fellow F1 drivers were also quick to react, with many taking to social media to congratulate their colleague. Lewis Hamilton posted a series of laughing emojis and the comment, âMate, this is brilliant. Congrats!â Meanwhile, Sergio PĂ©rez shared the post on his story, adding, âWelcome to the club, Oscar! So happy for you and Y/N.â
Y/Nâs friends from the modeling world also chimed in with their well-wishes. Supermodel and close friend Gigi Hadid commented, âSo happy for you both! Canât wait to meet the little one đŁâ€ïž.â Other notable names like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber also left congratulatory messages, highlighting the coupleâs wide circle of supportive friends.
While details about the babyâs name and gender remain under wraps, sources close to the couple suggest that both mother and baby are healthy and doing well. Itâs been reported that the couple is currently enjoying some much-needed family time away from the public eye, focusing on bonding with their new arrival.
Oscar Piastriâs journey to fatherhood marks another exciting chapter in his already impressive career. The 23-year-old has been making waves in the Formula 1 world, known for his fierce competitiveness and undeniable talent on the track. His personal life, however, has remained a refreshing blend of humor and humility, as evidenced by this recent announcement.
Y/N, who has graced the covers of countless fashion magazines and walked the runways for top designers, has also been balancing her career and personal life with grace and style. The coupleâs shared values and mutual support have made them a power duo, both in their professional and personal lives.
As the news continues to spread, fans eagerly await more updates from the couple, hoping for a glimpse into their life as new parents. For now, the iconic ice bath photo with its playful rubber ducks will remain a delightful and heartwarming reminder of this special moment.
In a world often dominated by glitz and glamour, Oscar and Y/Nâs announcement is a breath of fresh air, reminding everyone that sometimes, the simplest and silliest moments are the ones that matter the most.
Congratulations to the happy couple on their new adventure into parenthood!

you were sitting on a swing on the beach waiting for lando to come back. it had been a few months since you and him started hanging out and became friends.
it wasnt surprising when you, along the way of you guys becoming close, started catching feelings for him. you were captivated by his charms, his beautiful and flirtatious personality, and those eyes that hold a million stars.
"y/n?" you hear a voice call out from behind you.
"yes, lan?" you respond back using his nickname.
"i got us some juice. they said these two were the top sellers." he hands you one as he sits down.
"oooo these look good. what flavour is this one?" you ask him waiting to take a sip.
"i think that ones called 'golden sun', it has pineapple, orange, and mango im pretty sure." he answers.
you take a sip from your juice and you were met with a wonderful taste. sweet and sour, but savory as well.
"is it good?" he asks as you eagerly nod your head.
"of course!! you can never go wrong with mango." you answer taking another sip from your juice, "whats yours called?"
"mines called 'starfish dreams', i think it has strawberry, kiwi, peach, and pineapple. not quite sure, but its good. sweet with a hint of sourness." he answers, "wanna try mine?"
"yes!! that sounds equally as good! you can try mine as well." he was ready to give you his cup and you suddenly had an idea.
you grabbed his and gave him yours and then you grabbed his arm making him give you a confused look until he realized what you were doing.
"ohhhh..." he sighs in relief, "i thought i did something wrong for a second."
you laugh out loud at the thought of him being concerned for a second.
"no, no, i just need a nice pic for the gram since you took all of the ones i was gonna post." you give him a side eye as you take out your phone for a picture.
"you snooze you lose." he sticks his tongue out at you, to which you do back.
after you snapped a couple photos, you guys go back to having a conversation about how pretty the view was at night.
"it was really nice of you to invite me here." you say to him as he looks at you.
"im glad i grew the balls to ask you to hangout with me when nobody was willing to," he chuckles, "i wouldve been alone today."
"oh so basically what youre saying is that i was the last option?" you joke around waiting for his response.
"no, no, no...not like that. more like you were the scariest option on the list." he says as you give him a look.
"how? im not that scary looking...right?" you ask him as he violently shakes his head.
"obviously not...i meantâughhh...what i meant was you were only the scariest option on the list because i was afraid youd reject me." he spews out.
"reject you? why would you think that?" you give him a more confused look.
"because compared to me, i am definitely way out of your league," you look at him in the eyes as he looks away, "youre just too beautiful, refreshing, fun to be around, and youre just so charming. after our first lunch together, i kept thinking about you and how it was impossible to love somebody at first sight, but it was definitely possible and im the living proof of it."
"is this you confessing your love for me, norris?" you ask him as he finally looks into your eyes.
"yeah...i guess it is." he looks at your face for any sort of reaction, but all you did was look into his eyes which made him nervous.
all the nervousness he had were washed away from his body in seconds after you leaned in and gave him a kiss, to which he reciprocated.
"i feel the exact same way, lan." you give him a smile as you give him another kiss.
both of you guys spent your night at the swing looking at the stars, talking about random things that you both were interested in, and getting in the water for a little swim; soaking in each others love for one another.

"i told you hard launching would be the only way. considering the fact we already had a rumor around us." he tells you as you give him a look.
"i guess so. also im only hard launching to prove user9 and user5 wrong. trying to make user3s and user4s day since theyve been rooting for us." you say as he laughs, "you gotta do it with me tho, i have a plan."

maxverstappen1 love you too, schat

y/username his big heart, ego, ass, trophy case, therapy bill from childhood trauma, i could keep going on but i donât want to make you feel emasculated
user62 okay, but like how did he bag her?
y/username he has incredible rizz, and look at himđ€€
âHappy Fatherâs Day, Maxie,â you grin as Max lays on you lap, looking up at you with his beautiful blue eyes.
âYou arenât pregnant, Schat,â he laughs, your fingertips gently scratching his scalp.
âWe could change that, get some practice in for after the wedding?â you watch his eyes widen as he quickly sits up.
âPractice makes perfect, why donât we practice now?â Max suggests, picking you up and carrying you to the bedroom.
Your wedding is small, only some close friends and family in attendance. The ceremony takes place in your backyard, no reception beyond a dinner afterwards.
Despite both your respective fame levels, you didnât want anyone knowing of the marriage. Fans still thought you were dating, so when you got a positive pregnancy test, you were extra careful.
Max was grateful that you had a private recording studio in the house, for when you needed to drop the album. You didnât mean to choose the surprise drop date to be at the end of your pregnancy, nor Fatherâs Day, but life worked in funny ways.
âHappy Fatherâs Day, Maxie,â you softly say, handing the little bundle off to Max.
âThis is the best present, heâs beautiful,â Max hold back tears as he holds his son close to his chest.
âIâm not sure if I will be able to top this next year,â you laugh a little, your tiredness making an apparent after a long labor.
âYou should take a nap, Iâll be okay with him,â Max runs a hand though your sweaty hair. To him, youâve never looked more perfect.
âI have one thing to do first,â you yawn, pulling out your phone. Max slides into the hospital bed beside you, you immediately nestle into him, his warmth enveloping you.
instagram
y/username SURPRISE! midnight rain is out now! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did writing it for the past four years. There is so much in my life that happened, so enjoy my journey through heartbreak, love, and growth. I want to quickly thank Max and my team for making this possible đ
user1 AHHH this is so good, but didnât she and Max break up? Why is she thanking him?
user3 dude, i think they are married, did you listen to everything else
user4 yeah, she had some songs about marriage, but she hasnât been at any races since last year
user10 did yâall see the statement saying there wonât be a tour for the album?? crying in the club
user11 Okay, but Robin?? secret child??
maxverstappen1 endlessly proud of you, schatje

Hi!! Iâve been reading your poly!marauders x femreader and was wondering if you could possibly write about the reader having a vision while being with only the marauders, and how they would react and help reader without Barty or Reggie being there to help her? Maybe the vision can be another cute moment with the boys and reader not wanting to tell them what she saw and trying to walk away but they stop her and eventually get it out of her? Also,I love how you write the characters and portray their relationships :) Thank you so much!!!
This ended up a bit angstier than you had requested? But I think our girlie-pop needs to work through some of her shit before weâre really leaning into the cutesy stuff so I hope this works for now! Itâs not like Iâve already got the next part planned or anythingâŠâŠ.. đđ
poly!marauders x seer!reader where they witness her first Sight alone
CW: fem!reader, angst? w/ a happy ending, hurt/comfort, reader still stubborn as all hell, boys still relentless as ever - but weâre getting somewhere folks!!
There was no sense in feeling agitated with the Marauders; you noticed a simmering resentment bubbling up within you whenever your mind began to stray towards them, but it could hardly be considered their fault.
Just one of the many consequences of the ability of Sight; gradual feelings forming over ideas and thoughts and imagines that arenât real, havenât happened, and may never happen. There was an undeniable soft appreciation - dammit, maybe even love - for the three boys growing in your heart, but it hurt.
It hurt because it was an outcome of experiences that they havenât had, that they havenât shared with you; it was simply feelings for versions of these boys that donât even exist yet.
But it was becoming difficult to separate your Sights of them from them; it was becoming harder and harder to remind yourself that the love you were feeling wasnât real, at least not yet.
Yet.
That was the worst part - yet - seeing as none of these supposedly sweet moments taking place between you and the boys have ever really taken place, save that one of your impromptu Hogsmead date.
And whatever agitation you felt only tripled when you heard their voices in the library and your face broke out in an involuntary smile.
Stupid lovesick girl.
âThereâs our princess!â Sirius cheered loudly as he spotted you, earning him more than a few severe glares from surrounding tables as he sloppily (and loudly) plopped himself onto the bench at the table across from you.
âDo try not to get us kicked out when weâve only just found her, yeah?â Remus muttered quietly, though he seemed no less pleased with his boyfriend despite his scolding.
Sirius made a dismissive scoffing sound as Remus took a seat beside him and James across from him (and, decidedly less importantly, beside you). âIâd like to see them try; my family paid for this sodding library.â
âCharming, Black.â You muttered as you kept your face pointed towards the notes in front of you.
From your periphery you could see Sirius flash you a salacious grin; all sharp canines and cocky attitude. âThanks dolly; I think so too.â
âYouâre exhausting.â You let out with a sigh.
âI have been told Iâm ex-â
â-Exhilarating, we know.â James finished for Sirius, seemingly already knowing exactly what the boy was going to quip.
âSee? Everyone agrees.â
âFeel free to ignore him.â Remus interjected then, looking at you softly.
So softly. In ways youâve Seen him do many times but have never yet experienced.
It made you ache with want; wanting so badly for it to be real and then hating yourself for wanting it at all.
âYou okay, dove?â He asked then; apparently seeing the conflict on your face.
And wasnât that just the icing on the pastie.
âNo, actually, Iâm not.â You huffed as you began to pack up your things.
Sirius said your name then; all teasing and flippantness gone from his tone as he sat up straight. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean-â
âNo.â You grumble; standing now but closing your eyes and pointing your face to the ceiling in frustration.
âItâs not you, itâs meâ sits on the very tip of your tongue, threatening to spill out but you just canât bring yourself to release the words.
You hate this feeling; the lack of control in the direction that your life was seemingly going, moving through the motions unwillingly as fate pulled on the strings of your soul like some poorly mistreated puppet.
âDonât go.â James all but whispered then; his hand seemingly aching to reach for yours but clearly resisting the urge.
That only made you feel worse.
You let out a breath and started to lower yourself back to your seat on the bench when you recognized the familiar feeling of your consciousness being pulled elsewhere; the dreaded sensation of being submerged under cold water followed by the neurons firing in your brain as they were gently plucked from their existing pathways and ushered towards a new reality.
No, you begged hopelessly, not here, not now.
Your vision blurred through the tears that threatened to spill from them; placing your elbows on the table in front of you so roughly that it left your fingertips buzzing, you covered your face behind your hands and fought to steady your breathing.
âYouâre okay, dove.â Remus whispered from across the table; his leg under the table creeping over to apply pressure to the inside of your calf. You were thankful for the grounding it provided.
âCan you look at me, sweetness?â Sirius asked quietly as James tried pulling gently at your arm.
You shook your head quickly and tried to say no, but all that came out of your mouth was a choked sob.
âOkay, thatâs okay.â Sirius relented evenly as James moved his hand from your forearm to rest gently between your shoulder blades where it began making soothing swipes against your jumper. âYouâre alright, yeah?â
All he got was another sob in response.
You felt James shift in his seat; legs straddled over the wooden bench so he was now facing you.
âCâmere angel.â He cooed at you, gently yet firmly encouraging you into his chest by a hand on your shoulder.
You melted into him.
âYouâre alright; youâre just fine.â He said again.
You flinched slightly when you felt a gentle hand grip your ankle.
âSorry, dovey.â Remus murmured softly, rubbing his thumb over your Achilles tendon apologetically before pressing it to a soft spot on the outside of your ankle.
âCome back to us, pretty girl.â
Your knees buckled beneath you as you nearly fell into your seat; two strong arms quickly caught you by your elbows before James carefully lowered you to the bench.
âEasy, doll.â Sirius coached calmly albeit worriedly from across the table as you heaved in a much needed breath. âEasy.â
You felt your sinuses swell as you took a few more breaths, realising belatedly that you had three boys that you were rather quite taken with staring at you in one of your most vulnerable states.
They already had so much of you - much more than they may ever know - you didnât want to give them this, too.
Your vision blurred through the tears that threatened to spill from them; placing your elbows on the table in front of you so roughly that it left your fingertips buzzing, you covered your face behind your hands and fought to steady your breathing.
âYouâre okay, dove.â Remus whispered from across from you; his leg under the table creeping over to apply pressure to the inside of your calf. You were thankful for the grounding effect it provided.
âCan you look at me, sweetness?â Sirius asked quietly as James tried pulling gently at your arm.
You flinched slightly when you felt a gentle hand grip your ankle.
âSorry, dovey.â Remus murmured softly, rubbing his thumb over your Achilles tendon apologetically before pressing it to a soft spot on the outside of your ankle.
âCome back to us, pretty girl.â Sirius whispered.
âIâm sorry.â You admitted; voice pinched emotionally as you continued hiding behind your hands.
âThereâs nothing to be sorry for, lovely girl.â Remus assured you as James pressed a kiss to your hair. âNothing at all.â
âI hate-â You paused around a pathetic hiccup as you finally deigned to pull your hands away from your now likely puffy and tear stained face. âI- I just-â
âYou donât have to explain.â Sirius offered at your next hiccup. âJust keep breathing.â
You realised only as Remus resumed moving his thumb back-and-forth against your ankle bone that he had paused to track your pulse much like heâd seen Regulus do that first day in the Great Hall.
A bitter taste filled your mouth when you thought of that Sight too; how much of your supposed ârelationshipâ with these boys would be of you breaking down in front of them?
âI hate seeing things that arenât real; that havenât happened, with versions of people who donât even exist yet.â
James let out a sympathetic breath at your words as Remusâ brows furrowed forlornly.
âDo those versions not exist yet or have you just not given them a chance to?â Sirius asked you slowly.
You made a pained sound as you straightened from resting against Jamesâ chest; you pretended not to notice the look of loss that crossed his face and ignored the same feeling aching within your chest.
âPeople can surprise you, yâknow?â James offered then; hope colouring the vowels of his words as he spoke.
âIâm sure that, whoever they are,â Sirius started pointedly. âWould love the chance to be whoever you needed them to be.â
âThatâs the problem.â You groaned, though you were sure they could tell that the fight was quickly oozing from your body with every swipe of Remusâ thumb or stroke of Jamesâ hand against your shoulder blades. âI donât need you to be anything.â
âSo it was about us.â Sirius asserted; all caution vanished from his face and was quickly replaced with mirth.
You snorted incredulously at him and wiped roughly at your eyes as a reluctant smile spread across your face. âYou are such a prat.â
âWe could be your prats.â He quipped.
âIs that what you need, angel? Do you need some prats? Sirius and I are well versed; might need to coach Rem a bit but heâs a quick learner.â
âFor Godricâs sake.â Remus sighed with a tired smile. âWeâd been doing so well boys.â
âI hardly see how, seeing as you all made me cry.â You jeered as you pointed your nose in the air, causing all three boys to exclaim various objections.
âWeâd only said hello.â James cried as Remus watched you stand and hike your bag over your shoulder thoughtfully.
âWhat was it that you Saw, then?â He asked; still smiling though his brows dipped challengingly.
You stared down at him for a few moments, though there was no need to search his eyes for clues; you suspected that he knew.
âThis.â You admitted quietly.
A smile spread across Remusâ face; it was slow and pointed but you didnât know quite what it meant. Yet.
âIâm glad I got to see it too.â He murmured with a smirk.
You tried to hide your blush as you left the library, fighting the urge to giggle like a schoolgirl the entire way back to your dorm.

But is she really yours? (141 x Reader)
Note(s) -
It's long, so be warned.
The guys are doing a little of what we like to call Dirty Mackin, and yes, I think this is something theyâd all do in their own way.
Still working on getting those accents to come through, while not stepping into cringe/wrong territory.Â
I apologize, this is a very messy format (borderline stream of consciousness), and Iâm trying to figure out a cleaner way to do this. I hope it doesnât hurt the reading experience.
And I am the only one who kinda wants to see the reverse scenario, where Reader tries to get the guys away from their trash gfs? đThanks to @bunnyreaper for the idea, it wrote itself as I read that.
Simon:
Annoying. That was the first thing Simon thought of you. So of course you had to work at the only cafe near his flat that made tea the way he liked.
You were always on your phone, arguing with someone (he guessed a boyfriend), and he hated getting stuck at your register. The calls clearly distressed you, and he didnât know why you kept taking them. Especially on the job.
Youâd gotten his order wrong more times than he could count, and you were always having to turn around and ask him to repeat the things he wanted. It got to the point where he waited until the other baristaâs line was open.
Unfortunately, other customers had done the same, and it was causing a backup.
Then there was the day. His day started as it always did on his off time. The three Sâs, and then he was at the gym to get his time in when he knew it was mostly empty. Then finally, his black tea.
He sighed, mentally preparing himself for the wait before he entered. As expected, there was a line.
You were there, and you appeared to be deeply engaged in conversation with the only person at your counter.
He was surprised to see you had a customer. âMust not be a regular.â
As he got closer to the counter, he could overhear the whispered argument. The man wasnât a customer at all, he presumed he was the boyfriend from the phone calls. Based on the things the two of you were saying, that made the most sense.
âGreat. Getting the live version today.â Simon had to wonder how you kept this job. Were you the boss's daughter? Did you own a share? Could he steal enough of the signature black tea blend and go into hiding until he had to ship out again?
You looked exasperated, and your co-worker stepped over to your side, coming to your aid.
âOh for fuckâs sake.â Simon groaned, realizing the wait would be longer.Â
He stepped outside for a cigarette, making the mental decision that if by the time he was done with it there was still a line, he would forgo his drink that day.
He chose the alley on the side of the shop, not liking the openness of the sidewalk, and staked out against the opposite buildingâs wall.
He was halfway past the tip of his cigarette when the side door heâd been eyeing warily opened, and out came you.
You looked frustrated, anxious, and maybe a little embarrassed. He didnât think you noticed him, instead, walking over to the dumpster and kicking it, hard. It sent a loud, tinny groan echoing through the alley. He narrowed his eyes, feeling that itch of frustration under his skin.
You noticed him finally, and stopped angrily muttering to yourself. Instead, you started talking to him. It was mostly an uninterrupted stream of dialogue for two minutes straight (he timed it), before he could finally understand you.
âMandatory break! Thatâs the second one this week, can you believe that?â
He started to say yes, and that he hoped the third one won you a prize: getting fired. He kept his mouth shut though.
âItâs not even me, itâs my boyfriend. He means well, but he justâŠI donât know. I donât know anymore.â You were searching for something in your apron, but he couldnât tell what, out of the corner of his eye.
Simon flexed his fingers, eyes narrowing until the shopâs logo mural was a blur. You found it, and walked closer to him until he turned both eyes to you.
âCan I get a light?â You gestured with the unlit cigarette between your fingers to the one burning between his lips.
âBloody. Fuckinâ. Hell, Bird! Sânot enough you keep half the fuckinâ place backed up on a good day, but then you prance your arse out here to annoy me some fuckinâ more? Fuck off.â He jabbed his pointer finger at the door youâd come out of.
The alley echoed his baritone, and somehow made his outburst sharper.
You stared at him like heâd taken his head off, instead of having bitten off yours. Eyes wide, bottom lip trembling, he thought you might cry, and he began to feel guilt grow in the pit of his stomach. Heâd forgotten, in the midst of you stirring up similar agitation, that he wasnât on base talking to some recruit dumped on him.Â
You did cry, but once you started talking, he suspected it was more due to anger. âFuck you! You fuck off, I work here!â
He ignored the small voice telling him âstopâ, and fired back. âWork?â He snorted. âReal fuckinâ rich that is. Donât confuse work with your million mandatory breaks.â
You clenched your fists, eyes wild with adrenaline and voice shrill with anger. âGo to hell. Youâre just some freak in an alley who canât remember when Halloween is. You donât know me.â
You angrily wiped at your tears to no avail, as more quickly took their place, and then you started sobbing.Â
Simon sighed, feeling like shit and wishing heâd held it together just a little more. âAlright. Alright. âNuff of that now.â
âIâm not crying *hic* because of youâŠâ you huffed, trying to get your voice under control. âJust go back to your cigarette. I hope you suck it up and *hic* choke!â
He chuckled, you were the first person in a while whoâd lashed back out at his harsh disposition. At least to his face. âWas uglier than I shouldâve been, but wonât pretend there wasnât some truth to it.â
âYouâre an asshole.â
âYouâre a shit barista, wanna form a band?â His lips quirked into a smirk around his near-stub cigarette.
For a beat there was silence, until the two of you burst into laughter. Yours a raucous peal of giggles, and his, raspy chuckles.
âWell, you earned that light. Got more balls then a lot of soldiers I know.â
The two of you stayed in that alley for thirty minutes just riffing off different topics. It ended with Simon giving you the friendly (read: rough) advice to not let your boyfriend cost you your job.
Thatâs not how he saw his day going. Having the most interesting conversation heâd had in a while with the woman who annoyed the piss out of him for the better part of his leave.
You were no longer annoying, youâd been upgraded to interesting, and that was the second thing Simon thought about you.
After your talk in the alley, Simon was pleasantly surprised to find that youâd taken his advice and stepped your skills up. It turned out, you were distracted by your boyfriend, but Simon had come to see why. He was obsessed with knowing where you were, and if you were thinking of him, and wondering if he should drop by.Â
Simon felt more guilt for being so impatient, and he decided no matter what, he would pick your line. That was the only reason too. It certainly wasnât because he couldnât stop thinking about you after your last conversation.Â
Sometimes you would take your breaks with him now, exhibiting that same forward nature from the alley, but it no longer annoyed him. Heâd tease you about whether or not that break was mandatory, but he looked forward to it all the same.
You talked about anything and everything, from where you were from, to Simon having to explain the delicate ins and outs of football to you. (He was pretty sure you were pushing him to have a heart attack by pretending you forgot a different detail every time you talked).
It was an unstated, but mutually understood, thing that your time together fulfilled something missing for both of you. For him it was cutting into his habit of cutting off socialization until he was back on base or a mission, and for you, it was a break from your relationship.
He liked to think that you looked forward to your talks as much as he did, if your expression every time you saw him was an indicator.Â
Unlike him, you were an open book, so you did most of the talking. Simon soaked up everything you told him, filing it away. You were funny, and fascinating.
On his end, he was careful about some of what he shared, and nervous about other things. He had more dark or restricted anecdotes than humourous or endearing ones, and he didnât want to bring you down. After all, you had more than enough of that to deal with.
The boyfriend. He was a nightmare of obsession and insecurity. It was perhaps your fourth break-hangout that Simon saw it completely for himself. Heâd all but dragged you out of your seat, which made Simon rise from his so quickly, it almost toppled over behind him. He wasnât unaware of his size, nor was he afraid to use it on the shorter man, but you assured him it was fine until he sat down.
Your boyfriend was panicking, wondering why you were keeping someone like him company. He wanted to know what it meant for the two of you, and Simon hated seeing you in an endless loop of begging the pathetic prick to believe you loved him. All of your humor and your cute little habits disappeared as he forced you to become a helicopter girlfriend, concerned only with his fears.
Simon decided then he would sway you away from him. He didnât deserve you, and Simon may not have known you long, but he couldnât stand to see you withering under him and his emotional blackmail. No one ever accused Simon of being sane.
You would be his, and that was the third thing Simon thought about you.
If he said so himself, he was slick about it. Heâd forgotten about the amount of energy it took to pursue a relationship with someone, and why he limited his romantic interactions to hookups with women he found interesting.
You werenât just interesting, he was fully infatuated with you by the time he started to actively move towards getting you away from that neurotic dumpster. You were worth the effort.
It started with seeing you outside of the cafe in a way that seemed natural. He thought about it for a while, before he settled on inviting you to a football game. He couldnât believe heâd worried that youâd say no, your âyesâ came out before he was even done asking.
You were impressed with his timing, confessing that the night before, your boyfriend had thoroughly embarrassed you at a party, and you needed a fun day.
Simon had smiled tightly all through your hurried explanation that everything was fine, and that he had apologized once you got home with him.
The day of the game, you were absolutely adorable when he picked you up. Giddily introducing him to your roommate. She eyed him with approval, and even congratulated you for trading up.
Before you could correct her, he slipped in his answer. âThat remains to be seen. Depends on if she embarrasses me at the game.â
You snorted, launching into that now familiar peal of giggles. âI promise I wonât. Now, which of these soccer teams is yours again? The Manfordshire Mermaids?â
âYou wanna ride there on the roof?â
The trip was a better investment than he thought. You were enthralled with what was going on, the hype of the crowd, the skill of the players, and just being there in person. However, you had to rely on him to translate this new world to you, and that left you literally clinging to him in interest. Simon was your whole world in that stadium, and he locked that feeling down tightly for motivation.
Step one had gone off without a hitch, and now it was on to step two.Â
Outings with you became a series. Simon encouraged as many as possible in order to trigger the response he wanted.
He knew it wouldnât be long until your boyfriend started getting antsy, and insecure again. You were going out twice as much as you had before you started hanging out with Simon outside of the cafe.
To push the matter, Simon told you his work schedule was getting hectic. It was a half truth, the training period before the announcement of a deployment had commenced, and Simon planned on having a girlfriend to come home to this time. Namely you.
He used the excuse to create later meetups. Dinners, movies, wandering the street and stumbling into things to do. All the while getting you hooked on his touch. Simon wasnât a touchy-feely person by nature, and this was something everyone who knew him picked up on quickly. You picked up on it too, but he wanted to touch you. He didnât though, at least not often.Â
Starting off with little touches that could be confused as an accident, he increased the pressure but kept the frequency low so you became addicted to his rare touches. He wanted you to feel special that someone like him indulged you in that way, so that youâd seek out more, even though HE was the one who felt blessed every time he felt your skin on his.
When you were together, he made sure things were about you. He didnât imagine your boyfriend left much room for that with his paranoia, but he wanted to show you what you were in for once you were together.Â
One night, Simon kept you out later than usual. Heâd stayed away from you for two weeks, which wasnât hard, work was starting to pick up. He couldâve carved out a day or two though, but he wanted to make you crave his time like he did yours.Â
It worked. He scheduled a late dinner at an upscale restaurant, letting you fill him in on all that he missed. Namely, you missed being with him. You werenât the type to keep your feelings to yourself, and youâd inevitably vented to your boyfriend about missing your friend. He didnât like that label at all, but he liked what would come from your actions.
Periodically throughout the dinner, your phone rang, increasing in frequency as the night wore on.Â
You had to excuse yourself multiple times, and Simon pretended to be annoyed. In reality, he anticipated that. Each time the phone rang, you cringed and looked at him apologetically.Â
On what had to be the tenth time, Simon said. âGo on then, run off to pamper the pathetic bastard. Powder his arse too this time.â
Your face screwed up in objection to his barbed words. âHeâs just worriedâŠâ
He shrugged. âDonât owe me an explanation lovie. Sâjust a mystery why youâre in such a rush to be a nursemaid.â
Rolling your eyes, you stood up from the table. âIâm in a rush to be a good girlfriend thank you. Stop being an ass, Iâll be back in a minute.â
âSâgo,â he downed the last of his bourbon before he pulled his wallet from his pocket. âIâll pay the tab and take you home.â
âWhat? Weâre supposed to have dessert, and then maybe a movie.âÂ
Simon watched your distressed body language and expression with mild amusement, and he was proud of being able to hide it, even though heâd forgone his mask that night. âYouâve gotta tuck in your kid. Sânot on me you wonât date a man.â
You pouted and sat back down. âIf I put my phone away, you put your wallet away. You promised me dessert.â
He smirked, refusing to hide it now. This was the first time, since heâd met you, that youâd ignored your boyfriend, and it said a lot.
You did it once, so Simon was able to turn it into a habit. Your boyfriend looked increasingly unhinged as Simon made sure you starved him of your attention.
The ugly voicemails and text messages began soon after. He didnât like that at all, and he had to remind himself the time to deal with your boyfriend would come, but he did appreciate that you were becoming less tolerant of him.Â
Every time you returned to Simon after having to soothe your boyfriendâs ego, and stop his tantrums, Simon made your life easier. He worshiped you in subtle ways, reminding you of what a man was, compared to a child.
There was guilt on your part, but it felt so good to be taken care of for once. To not have to worry about Simon bursting into a fit of insecurity that made you completely responsible for his feelings, and left little to no room for anything else.Â
When he touched you, it lit your nerve endings on fire. You knew that the touches were bordering on inappropriate, since you were still taken, but you also knew that your brain went numb with good vibrations with even just a brush of his fingertips.
Simon still kept it light, almost questionable as to whether it even happened, and you finally began to seek it out. Wearing backless tops so that his fingertips would brush your bare skin, sitting next to him in diner booths so a thick thigh was always brushing your own, going for things in high places so heâd steady you by your waist.
He never seemed to miss a beat on when and where to touch you, but it wasnât enough.
The breaking point came when he invited you to a dinner Price was holding as a goodbye to civilian life until next leave. The verbal invitation was the most valuable thing to you in a while. Not only because you were increasingly becoming addicted to him, but because for someone like Simon to invite you into that part of his life, it meant that he was in deep with you too.
All of Simonâs friends were funny, inviting, and very taken by you. They were so polite to you, complimenting you, and telling you as much as they could about their work, trying to impress you.
You were having fun trying to keep up, but you got the impression that Simon inviting a woman he was seeing to meet them was a new thing, and they didnât know the protocol.
You were surprised to find he went by Ghost in his field, and they were unused to hearing Simon. You shared how the two of you met, and how polite he wasnât in your first conversation, and they werenât surprised.
You were enjoying your time with them, the conversation never stopped, and you would venture to say Simon looked fond at times. Though, as each man became more flirtatious, his expression would change. It became an unspoken game between you and his team to try and make him speak up about it. He didnât take the bait.
Then came the topic of your boyfriend.
âCome now love, youâre a smart girl. Why do you wanna waste your time with that bellend?â - Price
âI donât ken what the situation here is, but if Ghost and the other one donât appreciate you, I promise I will.â Soap
âI had a girl once, who used to follow me in her friendâs car, sit outside my apartment, and call me from different phones to test me. Youâre fit as hell love, dump him.â - Gaz
It was a little embarrassing, and you were slightly annoyed that Simon had told them, but your mind kept shortening it to âhe talked about me to his team.âÂ
During dinner, you excused yourself to the bathroom. While you were washing your hands, Simon slipped into the room, making you jump.
Your eyes met in the mirror, where Simon just glared.
âHave fun with the boys, bird?â
âHave fun broadcasting my business?â You raised an eyebrow, but your tone held no anger to it.
Simon chuckled, locking the door. âSânot my business is it?â
You swallowed hard, shaking your head slowly.
He trapped you between the sink and himself, hands locking onto the counter on either side of you.Â
âLetâs fix that.â His lips pressed to the pulse point on the side of your neck, speaking his command against it. âGet rid of him lovie, and come home where you belong.â
You tried to do just that, but for the first time that you could recall, your boyfriend wasnât taking your calls.
Simon watched you while he packed, tucked beneath his sheets where you belonged, bare. Itâd been a week since you took that next step in his captainâs guest bathroom, and youâd been trying to inform your ex he was now in fact, your ex.
You gingerly rolled over to face him, mindful of all the reminders that he loved you he left your body. âSi, heâs still not picking up. I donât want to do it over the phone, butâŠâ
âDonât get worked up. Maybe he got the message already...â
Kyle:
Heâd re-visited Chicago on his downtime, and met you in a club. Unknown to him at the time, your boyfriend had stood you up for the third time that month, and you decided not to waste the night. Itâd made you so free and enthralling to watch, he couldnât look away.
Gaz spent the entire night with you, glad heâd ignored the jet lag, even when you took him to all the best after-hours spots.
The only problem was your boyfriend, Keith, who Gaz personally believed formed in the bottom of a toilet, and sought life elsewhere. His team thought he was delusional, and/or giving you too much thought.
âYou hitting the States again then? Donât get in the kind of trouble that you canât get out of because youâre jealous.â - Price
âGarrick! Get your fuckinâ head off your cock, and on the exercise, before I shove my boot down your throat!â - Ghost (after he fumbled a training exercise twice)
Except for Soap, Soap backed his delusions %1,000. âShe let you charge your phone when hers needed it more? Thatâs wedding bells lad, and I wanna be best man.âÂ
Then there was the relentless teasing every time he spent his leave with you, but Gaz didnât care. He couldnât bother being embarrassed when you were waiting for him. Your grin was for him, your excited laughter was for him, and your hug was for him. The one he always held longer than friends do, his heart racing when you relaxed in his hold. Smirking when he felt your nose brush over chest quickly. You were sheepish when he grinned down at you, realizing what you were doing.
Youâd gotten him cologne on his first (date) daytime hangout with you. Youâd been strolling through the mall, Gaz trying to make you forget about the ugly scene heâd walked into between you and your boyfriend when he arrived at your place.
Youâd been so sad, and it didnât suit you at all. He just wanted to take you out of that environment, and let your real-self blossom again.
His hand brushed with yours, pinkies locking and unlocking so he could feel his stomach dip again and again.
He was able to slowly bring you back, into a little world of inside jokes and friendly culture clashes. Gaz fully had you back by the time he stopped in front of an expensive looking fragrance shop and said:
âYou know what? I need a new aftershave, but Iâm clueless about shopping for that stuff.â
âUh, aftershave?â youâd looked puzzled, peering into the store window. âDo they even sell that here?â
He let out a confused laugh, pointing at the bottles on the glass shelf. âWeâre looking at it, so Iâd guess yes.â
âYou mean cologne?â you gave him your first real smile since youâd gotten there, and Gaz forgave yet another correction in favor of it.
âGet in here, and help me find an aftershave.â
He proposed that you guys find the perfect scent for the other and buy it as a gift. The two of you spent the better part of thirty minutes teasing and sniffing each other. Every time Gaz lifted a part of your arm or wrist to his nose, he let his lips brush across your skin accidentally.
âKyyylee..â you whined every time, making him stir in the right places at the wrong time.Â
Eventually you both settled on something for the other, but Kyle slyly placed himself in the position of paying for both. The thought of you paying never having been a real thing in his mind.
âYouâll get it next time, love.â
He treasured that scent, youâd specifically picked it out for him, and heâd savored the look you gave him when youâd finally found it. Now he was in front of you again.
âYeah, itâs the one you bought me. Did me a good turn with that. I get compliments like they get paid to give âem.â
âWhoâs complimenting you?â you asked, your wince revealing itâd probably come out sharper than you meant for it to.
Gaz didnât mind, he liked you as jealous as he was.Â
He chuckled, reaching out to squeeze your hand. âJust..other girls with good taste.â
Your pout and sharp head turn went right on display in the mental gallery he had of you. He couldnât resist teasing you again.
âAre you wearing the one I picked.â he leaned down hovering just over your neck where he knew you could feel the soft puffs of breath on your neck. He heard your breath hitch when he hummed, confirming that you were.
âI am, and donât worry about whoâs complimenting it, since you have sooo many of your own.â
Gaz laughed as you yanked him after you with a huff. If he was delusional, you werenât helping.
This visit was going how he imagined it, and he intended to end it exactly that way too. Finally getting that bastard out of a picture he shouldâve never been a part of.Â
When clubbing, Kyle kept you close. You both loved to dance, and every song that came on seemed out to prove that your bodies were built to fit together like a puzzle.
He took an interest in your life, wanting to see what you got up to when he wasnât there. Youâd resisted, thinking itâd bore him. It did not.
He enjoyed meeting your co-workers, and eating at the cafe you loved a block from your job. You even took him to spend an afternoon with your family. Every time he scored a point with them, you gave him this dreamy expression he was determined to see for the rest of his life.
When he suggested making plans with your friends, so they didnât feel like you were ignoring them while he was there, you were thrilled at how considerate he was, and he got the pleasure of overhearing you hype him up to your friends while you invited them out to do something.
It was you blocking your girlfriends every time one of them tried to push the flirtation with him too far, that let him know it was time.
He decided he would make his move when the two of you were having a movie night at your place. It wasnât ideal, because that piece of shit was lingering around the place. Kyle hated that you lived together, but wouldnât let that interfere. He had work to do.
âKyyyleee.â you giggled, dragging his name out the way he loved when he ran a finger down your cheek to your neck, complimenting your skin.
âJust admiring your skin routine. Youâve gotta share.â
Or, when he shivered, and you instinctively extended your blanket to him. He took it without question, trying not to think about all of the things you could do under a shared blanket. Although, your boyfriend walking in and out of the room, pretending he had things to get out of the kitchen, made the thought more enticing.
Youâd invited him to watch in earnest, and heâd just cut you down in a way that made Kyle quickly remind him he was in your apartment, because heâd lost his job, and had nowhere else to go. That youâd sweetly taken him in, and that he should remember that.
He enjoyed kicking him down while raising you up.
Your boyfriend finally just sat at the kitchen table in the dark, fuming. The living room was visible to him from there, but Kyle was glad to have him as an audience to him reminding you of your worth.
You two exchanged snacks and commentary, easily ignoring the unwanted third party.
âNo offense love, but beer here is straight piss.â
You laughed, stealing one of the cookies left on his plate. âBeer tastes like that in general.â
âHow would you know? Youâve never been anywhere.â your boyfriend snapped at you nastily, from where heâd been glaring at the two of you for an hour. âAnd why don't you go back to jolly old England if you hate it so much?â
Gaz lazily rolled his head in his direction, body language shouting how much he didnât respect him. âMate, youâre being a right prick right now. Itâs not like you bought the beer, or anything else youâve been shoving in that hole.â
Your boyfriend leapt to his feet, fast enough to knock over the chair. âCome over here and repeat that teacup.â
âBlud, thatâs not what you want.â
âKyle donât, heâs just drunk and embarrassed. Ignore him when heâs like this.â you quickly passed a hand over the back of his, but he just gave you a soft smile instead.Â
âThatâs his problem, he embarrassed himself. Why donât you go in the back and find something to do.â He was so effortlessly dismissive, that your boyfriend mistook this for being unprepared to fight.
Kyleâs one rule for his plan was that he wouldnât physically handle your boyfriend unless he got physical with you. Heâd planned to show you how you should be loved, and let a smart girl like you do the rest. That went out the window.
He kept it clean, the other man was stocky, but didnât stand a chance against his training. If you hadnât been there, he mightâve taken it further, grinding his hatred of him into harsher blows. Instead, he gave him quick, almost surgically effective, blows to put him down. He was too intoxicated and unskilled to retaliate.Â
âSee, he just needed a nap.â Gaz tried to lighten the mood.
âIâm so embarrassed,â you whispered. âI donât know why heâs always like this now. He didnât use to be. I just want this to stop.â
Kyle shushed you, crossing the room to pull you into his arms. âYou donât have to be embarrassed. Youâve been dealing with this for too long.â
âIâm so tired.â you admitted, clutching his soft shirt, and inhaling his scent (your scent, that you gave him) that made your eyes roll back in your head. He was so solid, warm, and a darker word popped into your mind, âmine.â
âYouâve been so good to everyone, too good. Let me take care of you.â he whispered, hands roaming from your lower back to cup your ass.
He heard the hybrid of a whimper-moan, and it had him at attention before you were done.
âIâd be just like himâŠâ you trailed off weakly.
âThatâs not possible.â He lowered his lips to yours, giving you the first kiss from him that couldnât possibly be mistaken as platonic. You kissed back without any hesitation, not even willing to pull away when he started to lead you to the back. To your room.
Hate him as he did, Gaz noted somewhere in his mind how dark the scenario was. The location, and situation, in which he was about to fulfill the second-to-last step of his plan was kind of fucked.
He cupped your jaw in both hands,âBabeâŠwe can go back to my room at the hotel.â
He didnât want to. He wanted to erase any trace of him here, starting in your room. He wanted you everywhere he could have you in the apartment, and he wanted him to come to just enough to hear it.
âMakes no sense. Too far. Here.â you murmured, pupils blown wide.Â
Gaz didnât need to be told twice. You were barely able to string a sentence together, and it was top three one of the hottest things heâd ever heard.
âYes ma'am.âÂ
Kyle didnât doubt youâd complete the final step in the morning, and officially dump the forgotten man on the floor.
Johnny:
You and Johnny met through social media. He thought you were gorgeous and, being John âSoapâ MacTavish, couldnât leave your profile without letting you know. Though he threw in some playful critique.
You responded with a thanks, and a challenge for him to do the picture better. It resulted in a months-long photo battle that quickly became a real friendship.
Late phone calls, video calls, and constant strings of texting built a whole world between the two of you.Â
You were the highlight of his day sometimes, especially when heâd been gone awhile. You helped him reconnect with the world after shutting it out to defend it.
The only problem was your boyfriend. Johnny prided himself on being able to get along with all kinds of people. It was just in his nature. Hate was so rarely felt by him, that he always had trouble identifying it when he felt it.Â
He felt hate for your boyfriend, and it didnât take him long to figure that out. He thought he didnât deserve you. He was always talking to you reckless, like he didnât have the most beautiful woman in the world in his life. Johnny wouldnât talk to you like that, he wouldnât have time to even consider it for all the worshiping of you heâd be doing.Â
Heâd cheated, only to make you feel like that was on you, and you took him back.Â
When Johnny heard your pained sobs for the first time, heâd been halfway through texting Simon to ask for help with a dark favor before he was able to talk himself down.
It was then Johnny realized how much youâd come to mean to him, and that only made him hate your boyfriend more.
Your conversations ranged from anything to everything, but they always ended with you venting, and Johnny comforting. He didnât mind it, in fact, most times he initiated it.
He realized, he must mean a good deal to you too, because you got all your comfort from him. Johnnyâs thoughts mattered to you, and you sought his advice all the time. He hated what for, but he loved that you did.
âHe didnât even like the dress Johnny. I told him you thought of it, and he accused me of wanting to wear it for you.â your screen shook violently as you stomped into your bedroom, sending said garment sailing through the air.
âMâsorry to hear that. I meant what I said when you showed it to me in the shop. Any guy that doesnât lose it to you in that dress deserves to be committed.â
You sniffed, choking out a humorless chuckle. âIâm glad you liked it at least.â
âOh, you donât ken how much sweetheart. In fact, put it on for me again.â
Six months into the friendship, he convinced you to come visit him in Scotland. Youâd been having more trouble with your boyfriend than usual, living with him didnât exactly give you a lot of places to take a breather.
Once Johnny confirmed he hadnât hurt you physically, heâd switched to coaxing you into coming to see him for a couple of weeks.
âCâmon bonnie, Iâve been stateside more times than I can count. You havenât been here once.â He watched you do your bedtime routine, as the sun came up in the windows behind him.
He loved how despite being countries away, the moment felt as intimate as if you were with him. In his home, getting ready to come to bed with him. Except if you were, heâd tell you not to bother brushing your hair. Youâd just have to do it again later.
You laughed as you ran a comb through your hair. âItâs not like you came here for me Johnny. We didnât even know each other the last time you were here.â
âSoâŠyouâll return the favor later. Be my pretty tour guide.â
You wound up in Scotland barely a week later. A suitcase full of clothes haphazardly thrown into it.
âI donât even know what I packed, it's a mess!âÂ
Cue Johnny, who canât quit hugging you, and they feel less and less platonic. âDonât worry âbout it bon. Iâll find somewhere for it all to go.â
Somewhere turns out to be designated drawers and shelves, that heâd cleared in advance, for your clothes and bath products. Johnny putting them away himself like the simp for you he is. All the while distracting you from stating how you wouldnât be there long, and you donât need all that space.Â
âWeâll see.â
Johnny had been coaxing less and less innocent behaviors out of you all week, and just worshiping you when he wasnât. You were a worked up hybrid of desperation, and restored self-confidence. It was addictive, and you started to lean into Johnnyâs touches and kisses. You pretended you didnât hear his murmured dirty statements so heâd have to try again and again.
It came to a head when you finally accepted a video call from your pathetic boyfriend.Â
You were in Johnnyâs living room, wearing his favorite football jersey, with him behind you, absolutely refusing to make himself scarce. You didnât want to take the call anyway, but Johnny convinced you itâd be good for closure.
Your boyfriend started going off, yelling about how you didnât respect him or your relationship, and demanding that âyou bring your ass homeâ.
âThe thing of it is lad, thereâs not really anything about this relationship to respect.â Johnny slipped around to your side, tilting your head up to press his lips to yours.Â
You hummed in surprise, but all of his gentle touches and sweet kisses over the week had you pliant. You immediately responded, squeezing his arm when he slipped his tongue into your mouth as a tease.
He pulled away, looking way too smug, and looking all the more impossibly-handsome for it. âSay bye to your ex-boyfriend then bon. The rest of this isnât for him.â
You gurgled something like goodbye as you slammed the lid on your laptop, attention still fully on Johnny.
John Price:
Price thought your fiance should crawl in a fire and stay there. Yeah. He wasnât ashamed.
The man was garbage, and hardly worth you giving him a glance, let alone this much sacrifice. Youâd moved countries for him, happy to make your home with him because of his job. He treated it as though that shouldâve been a given.
Thatâs how Price had gotten to know you. You lived in the apartment across the hall from him, and the first moment you smiled at him, John was a goner.
You introduced yourself with a smile, your pretty little hand extended out towards him. Heâd stood there, wishing he hadnât worn his ratty sweatshirt with his old football team logo in fading letters. You looked gorgeous, hair framing your face, slightly out of breath from lugging in your things.
Heâd stumbled in his mind until he finally remembered proper social protocol. âPriceâŠCaptain John.â He cleared his throat. âCaptain John Price.â
Your mouth formed an âoâ, you were visibly intrigued.âCaptain? Youâre in the military.â
âYes.âÂ
âWellâŠthank you for your service.âÂ
Normally, John didnât react to that line as expected. Heâd heard it enough times to wish he had a pound for every time, but that was about it. He didnât do his job for thanks, and sometimes felt they shouldnât be for him anyways.
Coming from you however, it was different. He had the reaction he knew most people wanted. He knew from the heat in his cheeks and the tips of his ears, they were red.
Your fiancĂ©, whoâd appeared in the doorway behind you, stole his chance to answer.
âYeah, thanks or whatever. (Y/N), come in here and figure out where you want your hair crap to go. Iâm just going to toss it anywhere in a moment.â
âOh, you couldâve just put it under the sink.âÂ
âYou should be getting ready anyways, we have a dinner engagement.â He adjusted his shirt cuffs, eyeing John like he was picturing ways he could kill him.
John wanted to see him try just one.
âBye John,â you gave a wave, a soft smile on your lips. âIâll see you.â
You disappeared inside, leaving the two men in a stare down. There was a silent conversation at play, what your fiancé wanted to say was stated without a word. How much John cared about that was conveyed in the same manner.
Your fiancĂ© broke first, slamming the door behind him.Â
âWeâll see if Iâll stay away.â He muttered, going into his own place.
Over that first month, you two got to know each other well. Your fiance was often at work, and you turned to John with your questions as you tried to settle into your new home. You had no one else there, and even though John had planned to decompress in complete isolation, he couldnât do that to you. Didnât have a part of his being that wanted to.Â
However, as John got to know you, he got to know your fiance too. Enough to know if he was ever going to murder someone outside of work, itâd be him.
It started with small things like what takeout you should go for, or which grocery store did he use? It seemed your fiance was useless.
One day, you needed help putting together your beauty table. Youâd come to John, clearly embarrassed, and something told him youâd debated on asking him for a while. Your fiance refused, because you hadnât paid attention when you were checking out, and didnât select the construction help option.
âYouâve gotta be fuckinâ kidding me love. You mean to tell me that he never made a mistake?â John was already coming out of his apartment, ready to help.
âItâs stupid, but I donât feel like arguing with him over it. Weâre in an ok place right now.â you laughed awkwardly, leading him inside.
âOk probably isnât a place you want to be when youâre headed for the church.â it came out of his mouth before he could think about how it wasnât his place.
He was so used to being blunt, and dealing out cold, hard facts or opinions. It always took him a minute to readjust to what was appropriate, but by then he was back on duty.
You looked stunned, clearly not expecting that from him. Your arms crossed defensively, giving him a side glance while you mulled over responding.Â
He meant what he said, but he never wouldâve delivered it to you that way, or at all, if he had thought two seconds more.
ââM sorry. Itâs really not my place is it?â he gestured to the back of the apartment. âWhere do you need me?â
There were many more opportunities to spend time with you, and with them, opportunities to point out the toxicity he was seeing. It wasnât in Johnâs nature to ignore obvious problems, he got paid to do the opposite. He had to resign himself every time so he didnât upset you.
With every time he gave you directions, or answered a local cultural difference that confused you, you two lingered in each otherâs presence a little longer. He wasnât going to spoil that.Â
Your requests started to leave the territory of furniture building and directions, and started to cross more into trying a new recipe, and how you could do better at fitting into your new home. Your conversations started to get deeper, more information about each other being shared.
There were times where you dropped off food, having made too much, or your fiance didnât want what you cooked. John loved your cooking as it was, he normally lived off whatever he could grab and nuke, but he threw in extra enthusiasm for spite and your pretty smile.Â
Sometimes John found reasons to come over to your place.Â
âShare a cake love? Donât get excited, I picked it up at the shops.â âJust bringing back your bowl.â âI can take a look at that window if maintenance is still laying about.â
And without fail, you made him stay every time. You got lonely, and you still knew very few people in the area outside of him. Your fiance didnât seem to care, he felt heâd set you up with plenty of friends in his circle. John called them posh knobheads, and you couldnât agree more. You had nothing in common with them, and you always wound up back with John to vent.
He found it easier to talk to you than he had anybody else, and from the never ending conversation between you two, he guessed you felt the same. The topic of the nature of your relationship was verboten, but that was fine by him. By that point, he was more interested in making you forget you even had a fiance. He really hadnât even made an effort to do it, it just tilted that way, and he leaned into it.
You werenât exactly stopping his flirtatious comments, in fact, you seemed to light up in ways he hadnât seen until then.
Then came the outings. As your fiance got more negligent, you got bolder. It started with you taking a chance to invite John to a movie when you two bumped into each other in the mailroom. He couldnât remember the last time heâd gone to the cinema, and he couldnât say what was playing if someone held a gun to his head, but âdonât see why notâ fell out of his mouth with no resistance.
Then it was shopping together, or you dragging him to a museum and him bullshitting his art knowledge to make you laugh. He didnât normally spend his time off being this active socially. He decompressed, and prepared for the next assignment. Maybe heâd meet a woman at a pub and bang out some release before getting back into formation.
Heâd wondered if he would regret doing things differently on his next deployment, but that stopped the first time someone mistook the two of you for a couple. That alone wouldâve been enough for him to keep his delusions (that he definitely did not have) going, but it was the fact that you didnât correct them. It happened again, and if he thought he imagined things, he hadnât. You never corrected the person, just gave a coy smile and accepted the compliment.
Well if you didnât, he certainly wasnât going to.
The final time that John could say he only found you attractive, instead of wanting you completely, youâd come to him to ask him if he could drive you to a little farmerâs market outside of the city. Things hadnât been going well with you and your fiance.
You didnât have to tell John, he could attest to that himself. Heâd heard your arguments in his place, and between the noise level, and trying to make sure it didn't go to a place where you werenât safe, he wasnât getting much sleep.
Your plan was to cook your fiance a favorite meal from his childhood, using nothing but farm fresh ingredients. You figured that all you needed to get things on track was a quiet night in, focused on reminding each other why you were engaged. John nearly bit through his tongue to keep himself from bringing up the fact that it seemed the workload on maintaining the relationship fell solely on your shoulders.
Instead, he shoved his bucket hat on his head, and lied about needing to head out that way anyways.
The car ride started out quiet on his part, with you filling in the conversation. Price may have flexed his fingertips in jealousy more times than he could count, but you were so goddamn beautiful when you were excited. It almost hurt to look at you head on, so he gave you side glances to show he was listening.
At the market, your excitement didnât die down. In fact, it turned into infectious playfulness. You two teased each other, engaged in playful scams to get more samples, and dared each other to come up with crazier and crazier stories about yourselves for the owner of each stall you visited.
Price would die twice before he admitted that he imagined you were on a date a couple times during the day. You never brought your fiance up, and he had to remind you to check your grocery list more than once.
It was late afternoon when you returned to the car, laden with goodies and constructing inside jokes. John was enjoying his time with you so much, he almost forgot he had to tell you he was shipping out the following week. He didnât know if youâd care so much as to need an announcement in advance, but he felt he should.
He was worried about you, and he would think of you wherever he was bound to wind up, hoping youâd come to your senses and leave the garbage behind. Of course, heâd miss youâŠand he certainly wasnât under any delusion that when youâd taken out the trash, maybe youâd consider him.
âWhyâre you so quiet?â youâd squeezed his bicep to get his attention, and he instinctively pushed his arm into your hands, encouraging the touch.
It was quiet for a moment, before you slowly uncurled your fingertips, and placed your hands in your lap. His face flooded with embarrassed warmth.Â
Had he gone too far by leaning into the physical?
Price white-knuckle-gripped the steering wheel, swallowing down what he thought was a rejection he had no right to be hurt about, and cleared his throat. âRight. Iâm heading out next week, and it wonât be short. Just thought you should know.â
Whatever reaction he expected from you, it wasnât the one you gave.
âWhat?â You placed a hand on your chest, and then rolled your eyes. âWell thatâs great.â
John gave you a bewildered expression, and it must've shown, because you quickly straightened up and faced forward.Â
âI donât know about great, but it is my job. The one I was quite clear about when we first met.â
âPull over.â you said so quickly, he wasnât even sure youâd heard his response.
âWhat? Why? Are you feeling il-â
âNo..just..please.â you gestured to the side of the road.
He obliged, brows drawn tight and carrying all of his questions. âYour boy is going to be home soon, and we still have a bit of a drive ahead of us. What-â
âI wanted to come here because of you.â you breathed out, still facing forward, your posture almost impossibly rigid.
âMe? Youâre not making much sense (Y/N).âÂ
You huffed, and when you turned to him, your expression took his breath away. In that moment he could read every thought you were thinking, and it wouldâve bowled him over if he wasnât sitting.
He felt electricity beneath his skin, the feeling he got any time he was about to do something drastic and dangerous.
It was the little hidden thing in your eyes that he couldnât place that gave him pause.
âI came here, because I wanted to get away with you for today. I needed to.â you turned your whole body to him. âI donât give a fuck about fresh ingredients for him, he probably wonât eat it anyways.â
You huffed, rolling your eyes. âWe agreed to start over. And Iâm going to try, I really am, butâŠI still canât stop feeling need.â
In the looming silence, all John could do was scratch his beard, and try not to look as stupid as he was sure he did. He knew what you were saying, what you were toeing at, but surely you were just venting. You couldnât-
âSânot right love.â Now it was his turn to look ahead. âNot for him, fuck him. For you. Youâre upset and youâre scared, and you're raw.â
âAnd I need this.â you breathed. âIf youâre trying to protect me, stop. If you donât want me in that way..ok, Iâm a big gi-â
âOooh,â his voice came from deep in his chest, baritone thrumming through the car. âThatâs not it. I promise you, thatâs.not.it.â
Your fingertips gently pulled his face in your direction. âYouâre leaving meâŠand when you get back things are going to have to be different.â
There it was. John swallowed, hard.Â
âIâm being selfish, but..I thought Iâd have a little more time with you before..â Your eyes watered. âItâd be one thing if you really were just my friend, but thatâs not right is it?â
John wiped at your eyes with his thumb before cupping his cheek in his hand. âNo, itâs not.â
âJust one time.â
It was a struggle to say no to you, and that didnât stop now. He pulled your mouth to his, hands gripping your shoulders in a subconscious effort to prove this was happening. You were in front of him, kissing him back as hard as he was kissing you.
He unbuckled you, and pulled you into his lap, sliding the seat back.Â
âIâm gonna miss you.â you were crying now, and neither one of you did anything about the tears.
His hands cupped the back of your head, fingers gently threading through your hair. âOh, sweet girl. Why didnât you meet me sooner?â
What transpired after was the most bittersweet moment he could recall. He had heartbreaks and troubled relationships before, but heâd never had to have a breakup with a woman he wasnât sure heâd been seeing in the first place, but knew that he loved.
He took you twice in his car, before finally, the two of you could no longer ignore the setting sun and had to return home.
John remembered why he preferred to take a girl somewhere quickly, and then spend the rest of his leave in solitude, occasionally seeing a trusted friend. It wasnât as fulfilling as what he had with you, but it didnât hurt this deeply either.
He sat in his apartment for hours after he watched you disappear into your own. He didnât even bother turning on a light when it got too dark, he just sat there, continuing to contemplate how things had gotten to be such a mess. How could he continue to pride himself on being the logical leader he thought he was, when heâd made such a mess of himself so quickly?
How was he supposed to forget you? How was he supposed to forget that he loved you, and that you loved him with another manâs ring on your finger?
The thought of seeing you, carrying your fianceâs child, and looking miserable during what shouldâve been one of the happiest times of your life made Price leap from the couch. That familiar electricity raising every hair on his person to a point.
He didnât know what he was doing, or what he was going to say, but he was moving like heâd planned it for months.
When he stepped into the hall, he paused.
You were sitting on the plush hall couch, eyes puffy, with a death grip on a pyrex dish. Your hair was perfectly styled, and you were wearing a low-cut silken dress that made him want to fall to his knees now that he knew what lay beneath. Your eyes widened at the sight of him, trying to curb your sniffles.
âI was right, he wouldnât eat it. He got mad and left.â
âYou shouldâve made him wear it instead.â Johnâs fist clenched at his side, itching to do what he wanted from the moment he first saw him get short with you.
You shook your head, rising to your feet. âI donât blame him this time. I didnât make it for him, anymore than I shopped for it with him in mind, and I told him so.â
You held up the dish, and John saw it was his favorite. His idea of a perfect Sunday roast in one pot. Your meaning was clear.
âI just kept thinking, it shouldnât be this hard. I mean, it shouldnât be, right?â you stepped forward.
âNo, it shouldnât be.â He also took a step forward.
âItâs not that way with you.â Another step.
âI would hope not.â he also took another step
You stopped when all that separated the two of you was the dish.
âSo this belongs to me then?â he was staring at the dish, but his hands gently grasped your wrists.
You, however, were looking directly at him when you breathed out. âYes.â
