scent of the day: delina (parfums de marly)

delina opens as a fruity rose - a bit of a shower gel-esque vibe according to my boyfriend, i think because the juiciness of the lychee note. the rose is prominent and slightly sour, but the fragrance is not very intense upfront. as it warms up it reveals more of the warm cashmeran and vanilla muskiness underpinning the light first impressions. the cashmeran, as usual for me, conjures images of vintage cosmetics, but manages to avoid being dusty or cloying. i can detect the soft spice of nutmeg and the dryness of vetiver and wood notes starting to shine through.

this reads very pink, very femme and coy, but still pretty subtle and effortless - not at all loud, heavy, or perfume-y, which, depending on your taste, might be a plus or it might be a disappointment. given the opulent price tag for a full bottle, i kind of expected more body from it, but it's very elegant. it gets described as "princess perfume" often, and i think that's fitting; anneliese from barbie's princess and the pauper would wear it. it has a nice springtime vibe - maybe too sweet for high summer and too light for the colder months.

if you want something in the same ballpark for less, i recommend alkemia scent oils - this is reminiscent of les courtisanes (lychee, nutmeg & woody), carmen 7 (lychee, floral & musk), and silken tent (similar cashmeran note), though none of these feature a big rose note upfront as delina does. and delina is ultimately a rose scent first and foremost, which i enjoy, but beware if roses aren't your thing. i won't be buying the full bottle as i don't think it's worth the nearly 5€/ml asking price, but i'm glad i got a generous sample.

So I tried Black Opium Extreme again

A relatively simple installment this week: remember how I tried this one and got nothing but jasmine? Well, I remembered two things:

I tried this on my wrist, not the back of my hand.

I tried it only a couple days after the sample arrived in the mail, rather than letting it settle for a couple of weeks.

I cannot tell you why either of these things make a difference. All I can tell you is that I wore Black Opium Extreme again, and suddenly it was an intense mocha (more a chocolate supported by coffee than the other way around, on me) with an undertone of licorice. In fact, through the lifespan of the perfume, the white floral blend (jasmine and orange blossom) was the least noticeable. I mean, it was there, but you could smell it as part of all the other notes, not standing unto itself. And if you look up there in the original post, jasmine was all I got. Even after the coffee-chocolate-licorice fades, it's not really the jasmine that comes out; it's more of the pear-heavy gourmand I remember from getting vaguely sprayed with the original Black Opium at an Ulta.

And I have also been able to (re)try the original. Let's compare the notes for a moment:

Black Opium (2014): Pear, pink pepper, orange blossom, coffee, jasmine, bitter almond, licorice, vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood (Cashmeran), cedar.

Black Opium Extreme (2021): Black coffee, cacao, mandarin orange, lemon, pear, jasmine (grandiflorum? sambac?), orange blossom, bourbon vanilla, patchouli.

(For the record: the creators are Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc.)

The newer variant is advertised as being very heavy on the "dark" gourmand notes, especially the coffee, and when I finally got Extreme to cooperate, that's what I got. Licorice isn't listed, but I feel like that's a big ol' lie, because I smell it more clearly here than in the original. Who knows? Not me.

As for the original, we gotta put an asterisk by this, because what I have is a very old Sephora sample (but less than ten years old). I think it aged really nicely, but I can't tell you for sure if the balance of the fragrance has changed—have the basenotes gotten stronger, has something else faded, what have you.

The original opens with the fruity pear-citrus blast that nearly choked me out while shopping; gradually the gourmand notes come out as a sort of pear cupcake foundation. I mostly read the (remember: aged) sample as a vanilla cupcake rather than a coffee or chocolate one, with those notes and the patchouli (which has probably aged very smoothly) subconsciously giving the base more weight. It doesn't come off like a mocha latte; it smells very Vanilla, and very Cake, and eventually, that's the scent left behind once the fruits have gone home. The white floral is still wound up in there, but again, you wouldn't really think of this as "floral" or "blooming," as opposed to the way that the Samsara EdT smelled oddly fresh and airy for a heavily sandalwood fragrance. So: A fresh batch of Black Opium might smell very different, but with this sample, that's what I get. The Extreme version is meant to bring the coffee and chocolate out and put it on top, so that checks out.

What any of this has to do with opium, or even Opium (1977), I do not know.

The thing that intrigues me is that I keep seeing jasmine/licorice combinations in perfume; I've been having a little trouble distinguishing licorice-anise notes, so I've been researching that. By researching, I mean "eating actual licorice candy even though I don't like it." The short version is that licorice, anise, star anise, fennel, and even magnolia blossoms all have a very characteristic smell/taste (granted, I have never eaten a magnolia blossom), and that common denominator is the compound anethole. That's what I'm looking into.

Jasmine sambac (aka night-blooming jasmine, mogra, sampaguita, melati putih, "Arabian jasmine") doesn't seem to have any anethole, but I'm convinced that it blends particularly well with licorice (etc.). As it turns out, I have a sample of Nemat's "Mogra," just because I like jasmine, and will you look at that: mogra is jasmine sambac. It's exactly what's in Black Opium(s). I don't care what anyone says, that's what it is. And jasmine sambac apparently has a scent that, if not containing anethole, is damn compatible with it; either I haven't learned to distinguish licorice very well yet, or they just blend together that well.

And I noticed that the jasmine/licorice combination is in two other fragrance samples I have: the original, eponymous Lolita Lempicka (1997), and the (for some reason completely different) eau de parfum concentration of HYPNOTIC POISON. So I'll be reporting back on those soon.

Fun fact! Mod Bunni has anosmia, which means she has no sense of smell. So Mod Cat will be taking care of this one!

Allar— definitely has sweet tones to him. He doesn't like to have his natural scent stick out often, so he uses sweet perfumes like candy or pastries. Cotton candy is the main scent he usually uses!

Louie— he uses cheap colognes most of the time. Nothing that assaults the nostrils, though. Bergamot, oak, stuff like that. But it barely covers up the smell of smoke that lingers on his clothing.

Mica— uses expensive and very niche colognes. Definitely the type to use cologne that has a rusty undertone. Sanguine. Usually smells very good and fresh!

Josh— probably has the most "masculine" scent out of these guys! He also uses cheap cologne, but the type that doesn't fully cover up his natural musk. Not in a gross way, though!

(I'm pretty sure they'll make it clear in a future episode since it's confirmed in the novel and by Sheep on Twitter, but it'd be a cute nod to it by using his cologne/perfume/you're right why are there so many names for this.)

If they drive, where is their favorite location to drive to? One of his favourite places in Tokyo to drive to is Mount Fuji. Chishiya loves scenic views and he could easily spend all day gazing at the beautiful sight. It calms him, especially after a stressful day at work. It’s a good way to tune out and pretend like he’s the only person in the world. He often spends most of his time there alone, earbuds in and calming music playing as he takes in the sights.

Out of all the subjects in school, which was their favorite? which one did they excel at? Out of all the subjects in school, Chishiya excelled the most in maths and science. He was top of his class for both, always earning perfect grades during each exam. While neither of those subjects were necessarily his favourites, music class being his preference given his love for it, he still took great pride in being better than his peers. As for least favourite.. physical education was bottom of the list. He would do anything and everything to get out of that class.

What shampoo, conditioner, cologne/perfume and deodorant do they use?

Shampoo & Conditioners: Chishiya usually goes for more nature inspired smells when it comes to shampoo or shower gel. Sea minerals and sage are his favourite smells, that or sea salt and lemongrass.

Cologne/Perfume: His favourite cologne to wear is ‘MUGLER Alien Man.’ It has a powerful and warm scent, inviting in contrast to his personality and rather seductive. Cashmeran Wood is electrified by Dill and Beechwood, ignited by a vibrant base of Osmanthus Flower and White Amber.

Deodorant: Chishiya isn’t fussy when it comes to deodorant. Anything that smells fresh is good with him. He takes great pride in his hygiene and as long as it doesn’t smell ‘cheap’ he’ll wear it.

The Elemental Fragrance Review

The Elemental Fragrance // Sample Set Circa 2020

Regretfully, I have let my sample set by The Elemental Fragrance languish for way too long. Sure, I post in a really random order and at the mercy of my whims. But this is not to say any one brand is better than another. So though I’ve had these samples for YEARS(!) I have long wanted to feature them. And so I shall!

Unfortunately there’s no way of knowing what scents have been reformulated or renamed in these past few years. Forgive me in advance for any discrepancies.

Ambiguous 3/10

This is both sweet and green… There’s a somewhat vegetal bitterness in this, as if cannabis was having a field day with some rhubarb. This is not a scent I could envision wearing, but it would certainly turn heads.

Mogul 4/10

There also appears to be this strange cannabis quality to Mogul as well. Although mixed with a light leather? I feel like I’m in some alternate universe where this one note is chasing me throughout these fragrances. Maybe this is my bad for letting the samples sit way too long, but third time’s the charm?

Abstract Mortals 5/10

I swear the note is still lurking in here somewhere, but thankfully it is so subdued that I can enjoy other qualities of this fragrance. Abstract Mortals has a nice milky sweetness going on. I can’t tell if this is cashmeran or a nice skin musk, but it’s a perfectly serviceable skin scent.

Rose of the Woods 7.5/10

Lovely rose and oud scent, mixed with a juicy berry note. There’s nothing particularly offensive or scary about the oud, and the scent doesn’t blast your intentions from a football field away. This scent is perfectly unisex in my opinion. I’d say if you’re looking to support the brand, this is my top choice so far!

The Grands 8/10

This scent caught my attention because it didn’t seem to play by any convention. It opened with a waft of vanilla extract, but then settled into something a little more peppery and dry. By doing so it skirts normative gender presentation of vanilla. The name, The Grands, also seems to imply that the entire Grand family can wear this. 

Amorous 8/10

Like fruit punch but viewed through semi-opaque glass. And for that I am grateful. Everyone say Thank you The Elemental Fragrances! Indeed, a light, fruity cherry-adjacent confection without veering in a too powdery or too saccharine direction. Another nice offering from the house!

Leather Boy 6/10

With a name like leather boy I expect this to be fairly bombastic. I know you’re all wringing your hands after I just extolled the virtues of something as inoffensive as a thin patina of fruit juice. But leather boy! What a name! Obviously we have leather going on. But it’s kind of an old “this leather watch band has been sitting in my attic for some time” kind of vibe.

All in all, not bad! I’d certainly be curious to see how things have changed for the house over time. But in a way I’m glad to have a time capsule of a brand’s earlier days. It’s impressive to see the wheels turn in an entrepreneur’s head and heart.

Olympic Orchids Lil

Nose: Ellen Covey

notes: woods, cashmeran, musk, patchouli, passionfruit, angel's trumpet, lily-of-the-valley, geranium, cyclamen, rose, davana, kewda, kaffir lime leaf

Lil opens with a silvery, clean, florist-fresh note, rather synthetic --it might be the cashmeran. There's also a super-sharp, Pledge-y, synthetic citrus note. Little by little, it gets dark and woody.

Then comes a tart, juicy passionfruit, with an airy feel.

But then we're back to a rather harsh citrus. Overall, it feels very synthetic and not that great.

One of Olympic Orchids' weaker efforts IMO. Which means it's still better than most of what you'll find at Sephora.
