Summary: Huntercorp’s Rehabilitation Clinic for the Supernaturally Afflicted was a project Dean launched almost 10 years ago, when faced with criticism that Huntercorp might be doing a lot of “Killing Things” but very little actual “Saving People”. The aim: to make monster cures accessible to regular people. When Dean gets bitten by a tween wolf he expects to do the brutal but quick hunter cure. However, Huntercorp decides that publicly announcing his stay at the clinic might encourage others to seek out the cure as well instead of hiding in the shadows. Dean’s not thrilled that his lycanthropy is debated all over social media (his fans are going wild in the comment sections), but once he meets Cas – a vampire who didn’t know there was a cure – he is starting to reconsider.

Excerpt: John Winchester looked severe as he stood by the foot of the hospital bed, listening to the doctor’s assessment. He seemed overdressed in his expensive suit for the high security ward and Dean had heard from Sam that they had been on another Whiskey tasting tour in Ireland when the news of Dean’s… misfortune had reached them. They had left their – probably very illustrious, possibly even royal - hosts in a very apologetic hurry and taken their private plane back to the US. Dean knew that his dad probably still had way more alcohol in his blood stream than was advisable for such a sensitive time, but somehow Dean found it amusing despite himself. Here Dean was, an absolute PR catastrophe in the making, and his dad was probably trying his best to appear sober. “The bloodline was definitely alpha though we have not yet traced the exact line. The blood of the girl has been recovered and we’re still waiting for her parents to sign everything.” “Treatment, for sure,” John mused. The doctor nodded. “Knowing my son, he has already made his intention not to sue her known.” “He has, though the family wants to hear it from Huntercorp as well. A formality.” John snorted in annoyance, one little crack in his otherwise controlled demeanor. “I will have Talbot on it,” he said then he looked at Dean. “Are you alright, son?” “I guess I’ll live,” Dean answered as unperturbed as he could. No point in freaking out. They would lock him up, administer the speed run cure, Dean would probably make an appearance covered in make up to signal that everything was alright and then take some weeks off while he recovered from the consequences of the cure. Because surely, Dean Winchester, the son of John Winchester and heir of Huntercorp, could not be turned into a werewolf. “Alright. I’ll talk to Singer about what to do. Just keep him…” John made a vague gesture with his hands in Dean’s general direction, but it was clear what he meant: contained. Dean took his moment to lift his hands, rattling the silver handcuffs that fixed him to the bed. The silver didn’t hurt yet, though there definitely was some discomfort. John made a grimace, then he sent the doctor a weighed stare, before he turned around to leave. Probably to make sure they could brush this under the rug.

Today: Supernatural (2005 - 2020)

Oh dear. Here we go. Happy (belated) November 5th everyone!

(The infamous love confession that has become a meme used to talk about important news by having Dean reply with what happened. Put on a white background to avoid jumpscaring people.)

Supernatural is an US American TV show that aired on the network CW from 2005 to 2020. The story, originally spanning five seasons, tells the story of two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, whose single father specialized in hunting supernatural beings after their mother was killed in a mysterious incident. After the disappearance of their father, Sam and Dean take over the “family business”, and get quickly dragged into the beginnings of the Apocalypse.

Things… Got somewhat out of hand after this.

The first thing worth mentioning: Supernatural has always been rather meta. During those early seasons, there were episodes between the ones very important to the plot where the show just would poke fun of different aspects of the horror genre. In season 4, they revealed that the story of the show exists in-universe as a book series, with its own fandom. In the last few seasons, they leaned even more into the meta, by having the characters fight the author of said books, who turned out to be also God, for their right of self-determination.

Fandoms being fandoms, and Supernatural, due to its focus being on two brothers traveling from place to place lacking female characters, the main ship for the first few seasons was the one where people were shipping Sam and Dean together, a thing the show itself comments on with the in-universe book fandom. This changed when season 4 introduced a new character, the angel Castiel (nicknamed “Cas”), who quickly became an ally of the brothers and formed an especially deep connection with Dean. The Dean/Castiel ship, or “Destiel” quickly became very popular with the fans.

In the late 2000’s and the early 2010’s, queer representation was still rather rare, and much of it was happening in subtext. Many people latched on to Supernatural, as the shipping aspect was compelling and it actually did feature some queer side characters in more or less important roles. The Supernatural fandom became very prominent on, among other early social media platforms, Tumblr, where people for a while enjoyed themselves imagining a crossover AU between Supernatural, Doctor Who and BBC’s Sherlock - the infamous SuperWhoLock that said people remember with a very vivid mix of emotions.

Due to its popularity, Supernatural kept getting renewed. The writers therefore had to keep coming up with new plots, and so they expanded the Heaven and Hell aspect of their world with, among others, Purgatory, power struggles within both Heaven and Hell, a special place where angels go after their death named “The Empty”, and finally having everyone fight God. While the core of the story remained the same - two brothers travelling through the US and fighting demons - other side characters were added from time to time, and usually killed off eventually. Many of them were, in one way or another, queer. But what really kept the fans engaged was the dynamic between Dean and Cas. It didn’t really go anywhere, making Supernatural in the eyes of many a posterchild of queerbaiting (pretending to include queer content for the sake of attracting audiences, with no intention of following through).

The show ended in 2020 after 15 seasons. The third-to-last episode ends with Castiel confessing his love for Dean and being taken to the Empty as a direct consequence. He is not seen and barely mentioned after that, and Dean is so shocked that he doesn’t get to properly react.

This resulted in mass hysteria among fans, former fans, and people who had been exposed to Supernatural and Destiel by proxy. Tumblr crashed. The episode got mixed together with the other trending topic of the ongoing US elections. Supernatural trended higher than the elections. People were making memes about it, and started to call the Empty “gay super hell”. The emotion of it is difficult to describe to those who haven’t witnessed it with the context of many years of Dean and Cas being firmly kept subtext. This event in fandom history has become known simply as “Nov 5th”. We still celebrate its anniversary on Tumblr. Destiel became firmly linked to current events, and people started to edit the love confession in a way that Cas says “I love you” and Dean replies with the current news. 

An imperfect rendition, but YouTuber ColeyDoesThings’ video might give you an idea what the emotional turmoil was like after the love confession. If you want more about the mess around the finale and the things that came after, please go ask somebody else. It is a VERY long and complex story, and I’m neither able nor willing to try and sum it up coherently. If you want to know about the various spin-off series of Supernatural, this article will give you a place to start. I would also like to recommend Tumblr user @whyissupernaturaltrending who, every time that Supernatural trends, explains what TF happened this time.

Hi Lauren!!! Ok so I apologise for the length of these answers haha once you get me talking about my fics, I just have a lot of feels

🤲what do YOU get out of writing? 

So I think two main things. One, it’s a creative outlet and I think that’s important to have. Two, it’s my way of accessing the fan community. I’ve never been much of a social media chatter. I’m not good at it. I find it difficult to express my interpretation of media so I’m not good as an analysis poster; I find it difficult to express my enthusiasm in a way that feels authentic so I’m not much of a ‘reaction’ poster; I find it difficult to reply to posts and asks and chain things without overthinking (hence the length of this post haha) so fanfiction is my way of doing all of those things. It also gives me an excellent excuse to keep rotating my blorbos in the microwave of my mind…

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting? 

Absolutely The Fine Line Between Home and Hormones. I truly did not expect the outpouring of love that I got from this fic. Omegaverse is such a love/hate trope and for a lot of people it’s an outright ‘no’ whatever the situation. I think this is because many omegaverse AU fics often kept caught in the trappings of the trope and lose sight of the characterisation, which is a shame because it’s a concept that has a huge amount of potential to really explore characterisation if approached from a certain direction. I’m incredibly happy that people gave The Fine Line a chance—even those who normally wouldn’t touch the trope with a barge pole!—because I was truly expecting to be passed by haha

Another special mention to the response I’ve had to The Space Pirate and the Officer of the Law. What has surprised me about that one was not the initial response, though that was overwhelmingly positive, which of course made me very happy, but it’s the way that it has stayed with people. It's not my most kudos'd fic, it's not the one with the most comments or the highest number of bookmarks, it's not even the one that people have read the most. Statistics-wise it's pretty average.

However, it is one of the most common fics that people still mention it to me, that people still want to know if there’s anymore to rummage out of that universe, that people still highlight as one of their favourites—that more than anything is incredible to me.

I love that it made such a lasting impression, not least because I didn't originally write the story for PatPran at all. In fact I wrote it several months before Bad Buddy aired. But when I stumbled back across the original mucho brainrot later it occurred to me that the dynamic between the two characters was a perfect fit for Pat and Pran and so I just had to adapt it for them

💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it. 

So my least kudos’d fic is in fact a Supernatural fic called Fallen Human (not a very exciting title I know haha). It was a coda for series 9 episode 1 after Castiel has become human and it only got 100 hits and 6 kudos.

At the time, I was really compelled by this idea of a celestial being for the first time truly experiencing humanity first hand, to become that bridge between the ‘animal’ and the ‘divine’. I enjoyed exploring it though. Here’s one of my favourite paragraphs on this theme:

He was still shaking from the raw physicality of it. His graceless body betrayed him. He had known, distantly, dismissively, of the toxins and electricity that fuelled the human form. He had never realised how it ravaged them, controlled them. He was, disorientingly, exhilarated yet terrified, the lungs of his body lungs dragging in great, heaving gusts of air without his permission, every limb trembling with the overload.

My least kudos’d Bad Buddy fic is Extra-ordinary Louis, (which is miles ahead of Fallen Human with a sleek 31 kudos). This is based on the concept of characters having self-awareness between the scenes of shows (which I stole from another show).

I actually really like this fic and had a lot of fun plotting it out. I also enjoyed playing with the world-building too because once I’d started I couldn’t help the questions. Like, well if this is the side characters what about the background characters? What are they, how do they work? 

I can understand why it’s not popular though. The characters are not that popular and it even focuses on a rarepair romance haha. It’s also a pretty weird concept. My joke tagline as I wrote this one was: The fic nobody will read. That was not entirely correct but it wasn't without its truth either haha.

I am new here and I love your blog, your posts make me and my thoughts seen I have really complicated relationship with supernatural. I heven't watched whole of the show

I absolutly love Castiel and Misha.

I used to ship Deatiel before finding out much about the ahoe because if you look through Pintrest 60% of supernatural posts are Destiel.I still read fluffy fics sometimes mostly when I feel really down

But overall I hate waht the writers did with the characters specially cas (The confession is a nightmare for anyone who actually likes Cas)

Its like they treated Castiel as a side character in his own story and I can shamelessly confess I spend a good amout of time daydreaming a better post canon SPN au with cas as an angle and far away from from the Winchesters(obviously) and I really want to write it but can't

anyway I try really hard not to rant but I have spent nights crying, thinking about everything they did to cas

so I have really stong fellings and I just hope that you wouldn't mind me terribly if I decided to send you and impromptu, long ass rant about the Angle Of Thrusday

Hi Anon, thank you for your mesage! It feels great to hear from another that you heard me and you share my feelings.

I have much the same experience as you did- I started out reading all the shipping fics (and even cry about them) and the shipping videos and opinions, because it's all I could find when I started searching for Castiel material online. But I became more and more frustrated so I started writing my feelings down (that was the "my castiel manifesto" collection) and then joined social media (for the first time) because I just felt so damn alone in my bitterness about Castiel. That's when I found out "bitter Cas girl" is a thing but also there are not very many of us. Still, it was better than being alone. Even though I get few notes from my postings it was great to know at least one or more other people understands. And I learned to appreciate other aspects of Castiel or other parts of the show from people on tumblr.

I would encourage you to develop your AU idea and even to write it. Don't worry about English not being your language. Write it in your own language (AO3 has different language options), or write it using very simple English (I am doing that with my WIP). English is not my native language either, and the first time I do any creative writing in English, was when my Castiel obsession drove me to write a 95K words alternate season 15. It is unpopular, but it gave me great satisfaction. It's therapy in a way.
