Utilizing Citrus Peels for Natural Fertilization and Pest Control in Your Garden
Tumblr media
Pests are probably one of the worst things a home gardener can experience! Sadly, it’s an unavoidable situation for most gardeners but doesn’t worry - we’ve got a hack that’s got you covered! If you’ve got any citrus peels from your kitchen, don’t toss them out and add these instead to your garden soil. Simply scatter the peels around the base of your plants and let its delicate sour scent do the trick with the pests. It may not be as effective as using chemical pesticides but it’s natural, cheap, and easy to do.
Citrus Peels As A Fertilizer And Pest Repellant
As a citrus enthusiast, I've discovered the incredible benefits of using citrus peels in my garden. Not only do they make excellent fertilizer, but they also work wonders as a natural pest repellant.
Citrus peels are rich in nutrients like potassium, calcium, and magnesium, making them a perfect organic fertilizer for your plants. Plus, their strong citrus scent helps deter pests like ants, aphids, and caterpillars.
After enjoying a fresh orange or lemon, simply toss the peels into your compost pile or bury them in the soil around your plants. You'll be amazed at how quickly your garden thrives with this natural boost.
Rubbing citrus peels on leaves can also help protect against fungal diseases.
For indoor plants, place citrus peels in a bowl of water to release beneficial oils into the air.
Remember to remove any peels that start to mold to prevent harm to your plants.
It's truly incredible how something as simple as citrus peels can have such a positive impact on your garden. Give it a try and watch your plants flourish with this all-natural, eco-friendly solution.

yuuji peels tangerines for you while you're both watching a movie and he does it so easily, so casually that you have to stop him 7 minutes in because the pile's grown so quickly (and there's just too many 🥺)

I thought that these inner sections of a pomelo peel thing kind of looked like flower petals with their coloring, so I left them out to dry for a few days, and then glued some of them together to make little "flowers" to hang in my window.

Dry your own Orange Wheels and Peels
Tumblr media
For many people it's strange to think that Oranges are often seen in winter decorations and are traditionally eaten this time of year. I know my house always had tangerines around, and I still buy them to this day in December. People also got them in their stockings as a treat. I didn't know still did this until I had my first Christmas with my now partner and they made me a stocking with an orange and apple. Gotta say, that orange was good. Now, this is partly because citrus fruits are in season in the winter. But there's another aspect.
The winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, is in December. Also called yule. It marks the celebration of the returning of the Sun, and Oranges are packed with solar energy. An orange wheel, fresh or dried, is a perfect symbol of the Sun to decorate with. Many people will dry their oranges during this season to make storage and decorating easier.
A dehydrator makes things a lot easier, but not everyone has one. However, fret not, you can still dry your oranges in the oven. You just need to set your oven to as low as it will go. Start at 150F and see if it will accept. Most ovens the lowest it will go will be between 160F to 200F. Don't try higher than 200F, your Oranges will get too toasty.
Orange Peel
If you want to just preserve orange peel, first decide what you are going to be using it for. If you plan to use it in things like tea, spell jars, basically need big chunks, simply use a vegetable peeler to peel the zest from the pith. Then place the strips on some parchment lined baking sheets, and place in the oven for around 30 minutes until they start to curl.
However, if you are wanting to use the peel in ways where us would need to be smaller; like curry powders, cookie doughs, and other general cooking, I strongly recommend grating your zest before drying. You can grind or cut up the larger chunks after they have dried, but orange zest (and all citrus to be honest) becomes rather leather like once dry. So grinding with a simple mortar and pestle is near impossible. You will need a coffee grinder or some other blender.
Orange Wheel
Lay your orange on it's side, so it's bump bits are on the left and right. This way, when you slice into the orange, you get your desired wheel look.
Now Start slicing. You want them to be fairly thin. I'm talking like no thicker than half a centimeter or quarter of a inch. If you have a mandolin, that'll make things easier. But if you're like me and don't have one nor can you consistently cut straight to save your life, fear not this will still work. These wheels just need to be thin.
One you have your wheels, arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment. You can dab off excess juice with a paper towel if you happen to have a leaky fruit. Place them in the oven and check on them after 3 hours. They may be done, or they may need more time. Be prepared to wait 6 or 7 hours drying orange wheels. Maybe have a home day planned.
If your wheels are getting brown but not dry, remove them from the oven and give them a moment to cool. Turn the tray around before placing back in the oven.
You can store these in a clean glass jar, and if done right can last a few years. This process will work with other types of Citrus too. Lemons, Limes, Grapefruits. You can make lovely decorations or dress up a gift in an eco friendly way.

Maximizing the Benefits of Citrus Peels in Your Garden: A Natural Fertilizer and Pest-Repellent Solution
As a citrus lover and avid gardener, I have discovered the magic that citrus peels can bring to my plants. Not only do they enrich the soil with essential nutrients, but they also act as a natural pest deterrent. Before tossing out your citrus peels, consider giving them a second life in your garden.
Citrus peels are rich in nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which are essential for plant growth and development.
Simply chop up your citrus peels and scatter them around the base of your plants. The peels will decompose over time, releasing their nutrients into the soil. Your plants will thank you for the extra boost of vitamins and minerals!
Orange peels are particularly effective at repelling ants and aphids. Place them near entry points to your garden or around plants that are susceptible to these pests.
Lemon peels can help deter cats and dogs from digging up your garden beds. Scatter them around the areas where your furry friends like to explore.
Not only are citrus peels beneficial for your plants, but they also add a pleasant citrus scent to your garden. Say goodbye to harsh chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and hello to a more natural and eco-friendly approach to gardening.

hey chai!! tysm for the 4 updates I loved it so much,, I hope everything is going well for you because I'm sure your writing is helping a lot of us <33 anyways I'm curious about your thoughts about everyone scents including woosanhwa I don't know if you've stated it and I just missed it but yea I hope you have a great day as always and remember to drink water!! <33
oh thank you so much!!! all of their scents are subtly included, but some are more obvious than others for sure. here's a little break down of all our main characters and their scent notes, but as a note.... scents change a bit depending on who's breathing it in and scents change with emotions or biological shifts. i include some thoughts about that below too! --
reader: chamomile tea, willow sap, & honey; when reader is in heat or aroused, the honey scent is much stronger, and when she's feeling really upbeat, joyful, there's hints of clean lemon zest. the willow is subtle, but a little sharp in it's medicinal almost wintergreen scent, it's one of those smells that you either love or you hate, but mingi and yunho both love.* when she's afraid, her scent turns bitter like over-steeped tea. if reader were to be pregnant, her scent would turn a little milkier, like tea with sweet cream and honey. yunho: rain / wet earth, cedar, & clarysage; when yunho is trying to comfort reader or draw her in with his scent, it's much more of a true petrichor / wet earth scent. when he's aroused or in a rut the cedar is stronger and more masculine, but underneath both of those tones is a bit of a sweeter/herbal tone with the sage. to reader, his scent really pulls like a comforting childhood memory that makes her feel safe and secure. mingi: dark chocolate, cinnamon & pink peppercorn; when mingi is angry, aroused, or in a heightened emotional state the cinnamon really shines for him, but when he's in a calmer or comforting state it's more chocolate and cocoa. the pink peppercorn is something that is only really caught when you're close, something undefinable that enhances the sweetness and the spice, but is undeniably mingi. seonghwa: freshly brewed coffee, jasmine, & pear; seonghwa to me lives in a beautiful space between masculine and feminine energy and his alpha scent is reflective of that. warm and strong coffee is ever present, but jasmine really comes forwards with those he's comfortable with or aroused by. pear is sweeter and more decadent and comes to the front when he's with san especially. san: jasmine, sandalwood, & oakmoss; san and seonghwa's scents are intentionally complimentary, but san's scent undertones are more masculine and 'alpha' like compared to his jasmine top note. he's floral and fresh, bright and energizing, but a scent that deepens in masculine complexity the closer you are to him. when he's comfortable and relaxed, the warmth and natural notes of oakmoss are more present. wooyoung: linen, salt, & green apple; wooyoung's scent is fresh and bright, evoking something clean and summery. when he's in heat, the apple scent turns a bit caramelized and sweet, but normally his scent is more even and calming with the linen and salt being forward in tone. to reader, his scent also calls to mind a memory more than distinct scents, and she and others often associate his unique blend with the last days of summer sun in august.
*note on reader's scent: admittedly, my inspiration for reader's scent was directly taken from one of my favorite books, a discovery of witches by deborah harkness. the full quote is below because i think it's so lovely and this line often gets stuck in my head:
"You smell of willow sap. And chamomile that has been crushed underfoot. There's honeysuckle and fallen oak leaves, too, along with witch hazel blooming and the first narcissus of spring. And ancient things - horehound, frankincense, lady's mantle. Scents I thought I'd forgotten."

extremely offensive to me personally that this knitting stitch called a "knit left loop" or "left lifted increase" creates a stitch that leans to the right and should be done on the right-hand side of my project.
you'd think getting a degree in chemistry & spending weeks of class time just on practicing identifying chirality would have made me more chill about rights/lefts and less prone to getting turned around but no it did not.
Why are they Called that. I mean I know why it's called that but Why.
