A poem for Pride. Continued under the read more.

As I grew from a little girl to a teenage boy, They said I should call myself trans*, with a star at the end: A star for something unfinished; a star for possibility.

As I grew from a teenage boy to a femme young adult, They said I should call myself trans, with no star at the end: That the star’s sharp points only served to cut and divide.

As I grew from a femme to a gloriously butch dykefag, I thought again about the star of my youth And about all the things it can stand for:

Trans* is for transgender— It’s for language that grows and shifts Like a living being; like a tree; like a child; For Sylvia’s Transgender Action Revolutionaries And for the kids at their high school GSA Walking into the club with their hearts in their hands.

Trans* is for transgressive— It’s for shattering expectations Shattering societies, boundaries, and binaries Like panes of fractured glass; The glass was breaking already, you know, But now we can turn it into a mosaic.

Trans* is for transsexual— It’s for those who pick up an old word That they’ve been told is “outdated” And brush the scorn off of it Like dust off of fine China To display it with pride on the shelf.

Trans* is for transvestite— It’s for shedding the skin you were forced into Like a snake shedding too-tight scales And growing something that fits you better; Making something new and beautiful, Wearing something beautiful and yours.

Trans* is for transitory— It’s for those of us whose gender shifts Like the phases of the moon; For people who fall asleep a femme fag And wake up a butch dyke And repeat the process again in a week.

Trans* is for tranny— It’s for picking up the stick they beat you with And sharpening it to a spear; Holding it up to defend yourself, To defend your kin, and saying: “You really wanna mess with us?”

Trans* is for those who reject the New Queer Binary— Who answer “Are you transfem or transmasc?” With an annoyed “Neither, actually”; Whose gender is not silence, but absence of noise; For men who are also women, For lesbians who are also gay men; For people so outside the binary That “nonbinary” feels like a chain around their throat; Maybe you can’t be cis and trans But I know you can be cis and trans*, And I know that you can’t draw a line between genders Like the respectable queers pretend you can.

Trans* is for all of us— For boydykes and girlfags, For queens and kings and crossdressers, For masculine women and feminine men, For my oft-excluded intersex darlings; For FTMs who wear suits and MTFs who wear gowns, For MTFs who wear suits and FTMs who wear gowns; For those on hormones and those who eschew them, For those who change their name and those who don’t; For those who want surgery to get a penis or a vagina, And those who want surgery to get both, And those who want surgery to have nothing.

Trans* is for everyone who marked the path we walk on now— It’s for Lili and Dr. Barry, For Roberta and Christine, For Marsha and Sylvia, For Stormé and Miss Major, For Leslie and Lou; And for so many others whose names we do not know Because they were blessed with the safety of privacy Or cursed with the violence of erasure.

If you asked me to name trans-with-a-star I’d tell you to call them Polaris Trans* The gender-variant community’s guiding light.

Trans* tells us where to go— To follow the paths cut by our predecessors, While keeping their drive to explore untrodden ground. To offer our hands for each other: Both to raise each other up when we fall And to fight when we’re under attack.

Trans* tells us who we are— We are faggots and dykes and sissies and queens, We are a bunch of rowdy queers who won’t shut up; We are armed with bottles and glasses, With bats and pens, with guns and paint; We are the people who have only survived Because when nobody would take care of us, When respectable queers treated us like a stain on their flag, We took care of each other.

Trans* tells us who to be— It tells us that we must be so brave and so strong, And so scared and so soft. That we must save our anger for those who hurt us, And not turn it on each other. That we must hold each other accountable for harm, But understand we are all flawed humans, And that mistakes are not unforgivable. That we must not hurt our trans* siblings For daring to be trans* in a way we cannot understand, And that you don’t need to know exactly what stars are made of To love how they shine in the sky.

Historical Notes

The figures referred to in the thirteenth stanza are, in order: Lili Elbe, Dr. James Barry, Roberta Cowell, Christine Jorgensen, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, Leslie Feinberg, and Lou Sullivan.

Sylvia Rivera is the same Sylvia mentioned in stanza four. In the 1970s, Sylvia and Marsha founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries together. They provided housing and care for homeless gay and trans* youth while working towards broader goals of achieving trans* liberation. Sylvia and Marsha kept their kids fed and housed through funds they raised via sex work. 

Sylvia would later say that the death of STAR came at the 1973 Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, where trans* activists were told they couldn’t speak on stage. Sylvia and drag queen Lee Brewster physically fought their way to the stage and criticized the gay community for abandoning the trans* community after the trans* community had spent years fighting for rights for all of them. Lesbian activist Jean O’Leary verbally attacked them both, claiming that drag was “misogynistic” and “demeaning”, and that trans* people had no place in the gay rights movement. Receiving such a devastating rejection from people Sylvia had considered friends pushed her out of working in activism for many years. 

Marsha was tragically murdered in 1992 at the age of 47. Eight years later, in response to the murder of trans woman Amanda Milan, Sylvia resurrected STAR as the Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries. While Marsha and Sylvia were both integral to the initial work of STAR, I refer to it as “Sylvia’s” in the fourth stanza to make it clear I’m referring specifically to the later incarnation, which used “transgender” in their name. You can read more about Sylvia’s life in her essay “Queens in Exile, the Forgotten Ones”, written just before her fiftieth birthday in 2001. The closing paragraphs of the essay are, in my mind, both a profoundly valiant rallying cry and an agonizing indictment of our community’s failures:

Before I die, I will see our community given the respect we deserve. I'll be damned if I'm going to my grave without having the respect this community deserves. I want to go to wherever I go with that in my soul and peacefully say I've finally overcome. Editor's Note: Sylvia died on February 19, 2002, from complications of liver cancer. She was 50 years old.

💔: I like to think if Steve was a Scout Captain,he would have lost his squadron six months to a year after being approved for one. He was so excited to be taking his next steps in life, but after his overconfidence got them killed on high tier mission, he felt nothing but guilt and sadness. He asked Lilith to be demoted to Coven Scout following the incident as he didn’t feel as though he deserved to be Captain anymore.

💤: Vitimir gets so caught up in his work, he barely registers how much time goes by. It also doesn’t help that his office is always dark save for several candles, a\dressers upon dressers line the walls, blocking the window so it make it impossible to tell it’s night or morning. Sometimes those under him come the next day and ask him if he went to bed. He did not.

If does sleep, he sleep with a night hat to keep his head warm and sleeping mask. Also, he doesn’t brush his teeth at night. He sometimes gets out of bed to get water before immediately goes back to bed. His preferred sleeping on his side with one to two blankets for warmth.

🪀:Now for silly...I say if I ever did an AU with him is if he went to the human realm during the 1960s-1980s and discovered humans made potions too. He would come back explain how the humans had these cool potions that made you see colours except you have eat a small capsule.

📦: I think if the series wasn’t cut short, Hettie Cutburn would’ve been third in the most sadistic antagonist second to Terra Snapdragon in terms of Coven Heads. A story boarder described her a sadist murderer type as seen when she throws a scalpel at Eberwolf during the Day of Unity. Unlike Terra though, she isn’t always willing to kill, as she will only do it if you Belos or you unfortunately wounded up on her operating table after a failed mission. She also has a stone cold exterior and doesn’t have a playful attitude. If the series had more time, I wonder how Cutburn and Snapdragon would play off of each other with Cutburn dry boredom against Snapdragon’s more sadistically playful attitude.

Lilith:

🔔:  I am probably gonna get hate for this but...I am not the biggest fan of degrading Lilith to solely comedy as I feel as though she can be an interesting character. Sure she can have fun sibling banter with Eda, but they implied more with her. I love her exploring history, but I sometimes wonder if she goes on fight flight due to EC training. Like I headcanon her as someone who hates it when people sneak up on her and she won’t hesitate to attack. It’s great that she cn tell Phillip felt manipulative during Elsewhere and Elsewhen, but I wish got a bit more or other aspects. I think she is a fascinating character.

Terra:

📝: She full knows there is something off about herself but doesn’t feel bad about it as she enjoys revelling in her villainy at a young age. She always felt like an outsider compared to others in Boiling Isles prior to Belos’ rule. Like I said previously, I believe Belos hand picked his initial Coven Heads, as he believed that Snapdragon represented what he saw in Witches so he strokes his own ego instead of seeing them for who they actual are. Snapdragon was happy that someone understood villainy and didn’t detest her for it, but didn’t know she was playing into what Belos believed Witches actual were. Dangerous, sadistic and prey on children. All the negative things he was taught, Snapdragon does. She still is evil, they both are.

General thoughts on 813 so far, aka my musings on ZZH and mindfulness tips

Feel free to skip bc this doesn't contain much new information lol.

On the topic of the recent slanderous article

As of May 25, 2022, ZZH's name is still being smeared, this time from a government news outlet. I won't mention what was in it because it's just more vague slander anyway, and who really needs that?

The author of said article, however, has been shown to be one of CAPA's cronies and has published these highly biased articles before. So does he really represent the government's view of ZZH? I don't really know. But it adds to my assumption that there are many hands in the CN government fighting for dominance/relevance. As much as the CN government likes to emphasize their unity and single-minded party values, I highly doubt it is as unified as we think. As with any government on the face of the earth.

Of course with any outlet continuing to slander ZZH, it comes with a lot of anger. Justified anger. So it was nice to see/hear other people in this fandom expressing their anger at the situation, just to know I'm not alone in cussing it out. The recent twitter space hosted by bluebirdmuppet was a nice thing to listen to :)

2. Helplessness and fan wars

I know a lot of fans have left this fandom because of the extreme toxicity, and the devastating events unfolding from 813 and beyond. And it's fine to leave, as I always emphasize. But I'd like to add a reminder: you're never as helpless as you think. You control your own thoughts, your own reactions to those thoughts, your own reactions to media, and you control the power you give them. Whether to give them the power over you, or to use your precious time and attention for other means. To center yourself again, and then affect change.

As someone who's had to study a lot of cognitive-behavioral therapy, in terms of my own anxiety and intrusive thoughts, it works like this:

You have a thought - it could be a full sentence, a fragment, or a mental image. Let's say it's "how unfair it is for ZZH right now."

Then a feeling - more importantly, it's not the emotion, like anger. It's your reaction. Your heart racing, blood pounding in your ears, tension in your muscles. It can leave you feeling very tired, fatigued. Especially after thinking about how unfair ZZH has been treated.

Then a behavior - You might avoid social media for the day, or treat yourself to some bubble tea, or quit the fandom altogether. Or it could make you desperate and start to believe in the ZSJ conspiracy.

At every step, if you give yourself five minutes to breathe, you can stop yourself from going down a bad negative feedback loop. I think it's normal actually for most people to have the thought > feel stressed > have a nice bubble tea to relax lol. And that's not bad! Some people might practice avoidance to spare their mental health. But it doesn't solve the problem, imo. Some people use their behavioral step to buy GJ merch, or do retail therapy. And that's good too, within your means of course.

I personally feel very sad if all of ZZH's fans turn toxic, or give into the negative feedback loop and participate in damaging behavior (to him and themselves). And also if when ZZH does come back, and I believe he WILL, that there won't be many fans left to support his comeback. That's what concerns me.

So! Here are just some mindfulness tips. The next time you feel a bit sad about the news or overwhelmed (being someone in the USA, yes the gun violence that has happened in the span of one week is horrific), try these things:

Give yourself five minutes to just breathe and take in how you're feeling. Just note that your heart is pounding, that things feel kind of eh. No need to judge yourself for it. Just feel it and let it pass.

Then ask yourself, what happened? Just the facts. Ex. saw an article with some bad news today.

Then ask, what kind of reaction did you have or are you having? Ex. I feel like my heart is beating faster.

Focus on the present moment and focus on how you're feeling physically.

Decide on a behavior. Ex. I'm going to take a walk, or I'm going to listen to some soothing music.

Come back to the topic at a later time when you've calmed down and just take note of the facts, that's all.

I think with the super fast pace of news nowadays, it's very easy to become overwhelmed with hate and spite and sadness. But I want to emphasize that your ultimate power is yours and yours alone. You can choose how to react and what behavior you want to take. And then another step. And another step. It's okay to feel kind of sad and sullen about it, but it's cool that you have the power to slow yourself down. And then speed yourself up when you're ready.

You gotta believe in your own power, or else who will?
