2024 in review

I wasn't actually going to do this this year, but what the hell.

2024 has been--weird. I think it's the year I've written the least since 2020, word-wise; it also saw me writing something non-Star Wars related for the first time in four years. These two things may or may not be connected.

Anyhow, this is a pretty short list with five fics that for whatever reason I find the most interesting. They aren't my favourites, they're not the best; but they were hard to write, or I learned something writing them, or I had fun, etc.

half agony, half hope. 34k, codex, T, also known as the persuasion AU though it's more of a homage to one of my favourite novels ever. it was extremely hard to write and it took me a while to get out of my own way and just do it.

you'll like it if you enjoy pining and yearning, smart and competent people so deep inside their own asses they can't see what's right in front of them, the agonies of being 20 and responsible for the lives of millions of people and a clone trooper, jane austen, cody being fucking stupid.

home alone. 2.9k, jango fett/obi-wan kenobi, E. part of my daredevil AU. I don't think it's a very good fic, and I feel too self-conscious to reread it and find out if it's actually bad, but that's okay. The fact that I wrote something like this (that is, something that's quite a bit of my comfort zone for a couple reasons) is good enough imo.

you'll like it if you enjoy fics that are pwp but a bit to the left, trans jango fett, obi-wan being the annoying kind of service top, established relationships and domesticity, superhero AUs that aren't actually about superheroing.

islands. 9.4k, codex + anakin & rex, T. The Force Sensitive Rex fic. I am very proud of this fic. I think it does exactly what I wanted it to do, and I had a lot of fun writing it. I loooove writing these three in different combinations, and I really enjoyed having them interact in such a weird scenario.

you'll like it if you enjoy shrimp emotions, Force Stuff TM, force sensitive clones, fics where there's no Anakin bashing that acknowledge that there is something very wrong with him (affectionate), cody and rex being obsessed with each other, rex being a messed up lil guy.

smoke signals and code. 3.5k, jason todd/tim drake, T. This fic was my return to Batman comics and to this ship after a decade. I think it's kind of rough, but I'm still pretty proud of it, and I had so much fun writing them again and coming back to this world and these characters. In a lot of ways it was very much like coming home.

you'll like it if you enjoy unresolved sexual tension, calculated violence, characters who are too clever for their own good, that very specific brand of fucked-up-ness you find in late 90s/early 00s batman comics, ships that take the trope "enemies to lovers" as a challenge.

irradiated. 1.5k, vader/rex/cody, E. I wrote this as a gift for a friend. It's the kind of fic that is only supposed to be liked by one person--if anyone else enjoys it, that's great, but it is very much tailored for one person's tastes. In this case, that means it is weird as hell. There's a POV change half-way through, it's more of a character/relationship study, it actually doesn't have a plot, it sits right on the border between experimental and presumptuous, I'm not that sure it works. And I had a lot of fun writing it (and my friend liked it ❤️).

you'll like it if you enjoy second person point of view, Vader being weird, a bit of body horror in your not quite smut, open/ambiguous everything, Imperial Era stuff, weird style choices.

Books I Read in 2024 #26: Fire Warrior (Simon Spurrier, Black Library Publishing (an imprint of Games Workshop), 2003)

Set in the Warhammer 40k universe, this novelization of the 2003 PS2 and Xbox FPS follows Shas'la T'au Kais as he is thrown into desperate situations across the planet of Dolumar IV in pursuit of the Etheral Aun'el Ko'Vash, held by the Imperium as a prisoner of war.

This one is a little weird, I know.

I think I first got into 40k in 2008, having spent entirely too much time on /tg/ reading pirated codexes. I was theoretically primed for it by my best friend having a copy of a 40k codex without an army to go with it because he was learning how to draw mechanical designs off bolters and such (we were like 11, so that's how it goes) from one of his dad's old books.

Like many things coming out of Britain, it has more than just the stink of authoritarianism on it; I won't bore you to death talking about it's origin as satire getting so aggressively lost over the last 30 years that by the time Games Workshop stepped up and actually banned players displaying Nazi iconography from their official events in 2021 following an incident at an official tournament in Spain, the bar had been Nazi for 20 years beforehand, so it was kind of a pointless exercise at best.

And yet, I do still enjoy the shit they've done with it over the years, or rather that others have done with the legos GW has set up. I like Rogue Trader, both the TTRPG (originally by Fantasy Flight Games, its license since purchased by Cubicle 7) and the PC RPG that came out last year, for creating the sense of a vast empire that is still dwarfed by the unknowable, strange and terrible that lie just beyond it. I like the Tau empire, a young, expansionist empire that exploded into being in the last millennium to challenge the Imperial regime in its sector with a message of unity and common good that is nevertheless forced to (huge asterisk on forced) do horrible things in pursuit of that goal. You get a lot of fun stories from these massively opposed ideologies, and the insane throw anything at the wall nature of the setting itself.

Which is how you get a novelization of a middling FPS from 2003 that is essentially Apocalypse Now in space.

Simon Spurrier is a serial novelist for licensed fiction, with material as diverse as X-Men comics to 2000AD and novelizations for 40K and 2000AD, as well as 2 original crime novels. He's working with very little here, and it shows in places, but what he does with the spaces he can play in is great. There's many one-off perspective changes to characters outside the Fire Warrior, and almost all of them end in messy deaths, often to Kais, but equally as often to simple, gruesome deaths as a result of the ongoing war the story chronicles.

Kais is a great protagonist to spend time with. Tau society is presented as an unalloyed good, a society that is built around the common cause and creation of a more just society that can build a better galaxy. And yet Kais feels utterly disconnected from it, a failure in his own eyes as the son of a famous general who died a hero, who will never live up to the simple poem his father left him with before his death, that he carries with him for the length of the story.

Kais doesn't fit in the Tau society, because he is an atavistic throwback to a bloody past that their world only barely crawled out of, a world of retribution and might makes right that was united by the Ethereal caste at the height of the barbaristic wars between tribes that nearly wiped them out. He is a phenomenal killer, one who discards every trait of the Fire Caste in favor of efficient death to the enemies of the Greater Good. He is equal parts goaded and goads himself into simpler means of murder, and as much as his fellows see him as placed aside from them, as the specter of Mont'au, his superiors see him as a useful piece in a battle they would otherwise not win.

Much of the story is Kais internal monologue as he is thrown into hideous situation after situation back to back, and he grows from a reluctant first time fighter who had never seen combat to a walking monster, coated in the gore of his enemies and placed apart by not just action but mindset. He is not a cohesive member of a unit, and he cannot help but draw himself away by his own actions.

This novel is flawed mostly by its having to cleave to the finale and some decisions made by the game itself; you fight the Imperium for most of it, but ultimately ally with an Ultramarine to defeat a Daemon lord summoned by a Chaos sleeper agent who orchestrated events from the shadows to bring about his return. It's at its weakest as it has to default to the game design of the final fight of having to destroy idols to the 4 gods of chaos and then shooting the cyberdemon until he dies.

Ultimately, interesting for people like me who are begging for any scrap of Tau shit (the novels are VERY thin, there's a few other short stories and a few other novels i'm looking into sometime in 2025) and it's surprisingly rich there, despite its origin being a fairly rote shooter.

Warhammer 40,000 Balance Changes for December 11, 2024: Core Changes

Okay, I won't lie. This shouldn't have taken this long. But between my health, PoE2, and Grotmas, it just took a while to put this together. And while I haven't been consuming any 40K content besides Grotmas, and I've been steadily logging my honest and unfiltered reactions as I've worked, I'll go ahead and put this in "Not So Live Blog."

I already addressed the article in my Grotmas Livestream, so we're heading straight into the thick of things today. Let's start with a summary of the current state of balance in 40K.

As with most of this year, balance in 40K is probably the best it's ever been. While some will argue that previous metas in previous editions were more interesting, it's difficult to argue that balance has been tighter. More than ever before it is possible to win with any faction. More than ever before, there are more play-styles available to faction specialists. The game is in a great spot!

But that doesn't mean there isn't anything to fix.

As others and I worried, GSC has risen to become a faction bogeyman again. Though to be fair, I never thought it would be this bad. The GSC player base is skilled and dedicated. Presented with the changes to Cult Ambush and a slew of cuts to their unit costs, faction specialists have had a field day. And competitive players with the resources to jump in have also had success. While it does require skill to pilot, the faction is definitely too strong as is.

The main problem is the aforementioned Cult Ambush. Depending on your die rolls, this rule does anything from nothing, to forcing your opponent to play against a seemingly endless horde. And now that Cult Ambush units can deploy out of Deepstrike, skilled players can take those returning forces and terrorize other armies. The result is a niche faction suddenly pulling in an incredible amount of tournament wins while being incredibly overrepresented at top tables.

In the mean time, another army many predicted would be strong is also performing extremely well. Even before Aquilions dropped in from orbit, Guard suddenly found themselves with some incredible boosts to their faction. I honestly thought that Tank Commanders would be fine with nerf they got. They are so not fine. And since many long time competitive players have Guard armies . . .

And nipping on their heals is another faction that refuses to break before planets do. While Sisters have only brought home a third the wins Guard has since the last MFM, they're still heavily overrepresented at top tables. Some of this is almost certainly skilled specialists boosting their numbers while the influx to Guard is probably bringing there's down a bit. But Sisters are still a faction to be feared.

On the other end of the spectrum is Space Marines. Dark Angels did, in fact, really suffer after the nerfs to Codex Marines. Blood Angels and Space Wolves also went down a peg, though they're both mostly fine right now. And core Codex Marines are still hurting. Interestingly, their cousins on Titan have been hurting even more. Despite buffs, they've been held back some by changes to the Core Rules and haven't risen as their foes have fallen. Their Index also just isn't that deep and they're suffering from stagnation.

Finally there's Imperial Agents. While some skilled players have taken them up as a challenge, or just wanted to have some fun with them, they're still just not a real army. They need an army rule. They need detachment rules that aren't so incredibly limited to a small number of units. They just need a lot if GW intends for them to be a real faction.

I also can't leave out the Deathwatch. They'll be returning to the faction list proper now. Here's hoping their improved Index and shiny new Kill Team breathes some life back into the faction.

But again! I can't emphasize enough just how good the game is right now! My favorite thing I'm seeing are the “mad ladz”. Crazy players that seem to be picking detachments no one is taking and saying, “Imma win with that.” Then they do it. The most famous is probably Jon Camacho who took home a GT with the Null Maiden Vigil, which many were claiming was the worst Detachment GW has written so far. But this just keeps happening, and I'm so here for it.

Core Rules Updates

At the top of our new document, they preview that there are further changes to Fire Overwatch! Let's take a look!

This is small but not unimportant nerf to the Stratagem. In the Charge phase, you can now only use Fire Overwatch! when the Charge is declared. So you have to decide whether to use it before you see your opponent's Charge Roll. This was how it worked in previous editions. Fire Overwatch! has been the source of a lot of grief since 8th Edition, so it's one of those rules that needs to be carefully tuned.

And that's really all there is! There isn't even any new FAQs. Looks like the Core Rules are reaching a place where Stu and the gang are happy with them.

Pariah Nexus Tournament Companion

I forgot this one last time. It's also still a little hard to work with since I still can't find my own copy of the deck. But let's take a look!

Huh! Looks like I might have missed a version. Still, I'll be looking for changes since the October release.

Looks like the update is in the FAQ. GW has confirmed you can use Fire Overwatch! on a unit trying to complete an Action without causing it to fail. See what I mean about that rule causing issues? And that also appears to be the only change. Looks like GW was saving the majority of their effort for the factions themselves. So let's look at the Dataslate!

Balance Dataslate

Right off the bat we're hit with the two changes we were warned about in the WarCom article. You can no longer use a Stratagem to setup on the table within 6” of an enemy unit. As long as the source of the rule is a Stratagem, you have to be outside of 6”. As for the Armour of Contempts out there, these effects now end when the attacking unit finishes making said attacks. Space Marines had better be getting some nice buffs . . .

And with that, we're on to each faction! I'm going to do a mix of things this time around. I'm gonna write a post for each of the Super Factions like I did last time. But then I'll follow that with separate posts for the factions with the largest changes.

A Shadow Dogs nevet kapott remixalbumon olyan kreatívok írták újra a korábbiakat, mint Gary Numan és alkalmi alkotótársa Ade Fenton, és több kevésbé ismert, vagy más területen ismertebb alkotóművészek Keeley Forsyth (színész, zenész), Mark Jenkin (filmrendező), Sealionwoman (Kitty Whitelaw, Tye McGivern), Penelope Trappes (ausztrál dalszerző énekes) és Marta Salogni (producer, hangmérnök, aki anno a Tomaga posztumusz szerzeményéhez, az Intimate Immensity-hez készített remixet Floating Points társaságában). Tehát adott volt a megközelítések sokfélesége és a „remixipar-beli ártatlanság”, s az eredmény visszaigazolódott, mégis a legjobb talán egy önremix lett, Elizabeth Walling „Break> Mix”-ea Fear Keeps Us Alive-ból.

Remix Challenge – Part 2. A Years of Denial, állattenyésztői zsargonnal élve – bár a klasszikus industrial, ebm, new vave és electro clash génpalettából építi magát – fajtatisztának tekinthető, fajtajellegeit markánsan képviseli. Ezért érdekesek mindig a cseh-francia vegyespáros albumait követő fedeztetések, mint ezúttal, a tavaly év hetedik legjobbjának választott LP-ből készült Suicide Disco Vol. 2 Remixes. Engem meglepett az eredmény, ugyanis a nagyobb nevek, sőt kedvenceim rendre bakiztak átértelmezéseik során. Hacker, Kris Baha és még Phase Fatale is valahogy annyira kényszeresen, az énképéből kiindulva, ahhoz igazítva alkotott, hogy mind az eredeti felvétel, mind az önerő eltűnt, szétfolyt, jellegtelenné vált. Így itt is a kisebb nevek Maenad Veyl(Thomas Feriero) és NEVER (Stefano Santi), Velvet May (Andrea Davide), Codex Empire (Mahk Rumbae) és Supreme Low (Jerome Tcherneyan) voltak ötletgazdagok, alkalmazkodtak, húztak extrákat. De itt is van csavar, egy „de”, ugyanis Rafael Martinez Espinosa, vagy ahogy ti ismeritek Geistform, bevetve titán kemény zenei algoritmusát, simán megugrotta a mesebeli kihívást, hogy legyen Geistform, meg ne is, maradjon Years of Denial, meg ne is.

Remix Challenge – Part 3. Még ősszel két Tolouse Low Trax album is világot látott, és végül is nem rossz album Fung Day, meg végül is helyet kapott három kis quickie róla a Traxelektorban, mégis egy erős remixalbumról, a Kiosque Versions-ről lesz szó. Talán az se véletlen, hogy ez jelent meg a krautrock-centrum Bureau B-nél. A düsseldorfi Detlef Weinrich anyagaiban, ha jól megfigyeljük őket, nagyon sokféle, és magas minőségű anyag van, hangminták, többrétegű dobok és basszusok, amiket a szerző visszanyes szűk tartományokra, és nagy tömörségű, repetitív szekvenciákká formálja. Ezért a Tolouse Low Trax remixek mindig érdekesek, és gyorsan tegyük hozzá, a remixerek kiválasztása is hagyományosan leleményes. Nevesítve: Beat Detectives (Chris Hontos, Aaron Anderson), Grim Lusk (Murray Collier), Joakim (Joakim Bouaziz), akik sikerrel vették a csellendzst, és itt is van egy szuper önátértelmezés, míg a Froid Dub vagy Simo Cell is belelépett a fenti csapdák valamelyikébe.

Az Ezines, két perthi ifjú, Theo Letch-Fanciulli, Owen Aitken párosa olyan ezredfordulós breakbeatet játszik, amilyent manapság ritkán hallunk, főleg, hogy ez acid-break. Headcleaner című, négyszámos debut-EP-jükről háromféle old school break is hallható a Traxelektorban.

Kimeríthetetlennek tűnik Reeko hangtára. A Tomorrow Doesn’t Exist és a Urmah után, itt év végén az El Retorno De Saturno kapcsán ámulhatunk idén harmadszor, mekkora gigantikus és ütembiztos örökmozgókat épít Juan Rico techno-jából. A kislemezt az olasz KR3 Recordsnak köszönhetjük.

Biztos van annak valami mélylélektani, tudatalattiból reflektáló oka, ki, hogy reagál ezekre – a paliból kinézem, hogy direkt csinálja! Ha jól számolom, ez már a harmadik szőrös festékfoltos cover. Jamie Robertstől, és mit hogy a tudatalattim, nekem még az amygdalám is viszket tőle. A BouQ EP a kaotikusabb Blawan lemezek számát szaporítja, de aki elektropunk tömörségben kezd el száguldani, ide jut. A Fires a lemez slágere, nem rossz, de lesznek még emlékezetesebb blawani pillanataink is, bár a Done Eclipse igencsak rendben van.

Alva Noto az utóbbi években a Hybr-ID sorozatát építette, most visszatért korábbi szériájához, a Xerrox-hoz, melyet 2007-ben indított. Darabjai – Vol.1(2007), Vol.2 (2009), Vol.3 (2015), Vol.4 (2020) – lekövették a szerző fejlődését a nyers, fehér zaj experimentumától az akusztikus képekig. Természetesen a Notonnál jött ki a Xerrox Vol.5, mely tizenkét felvételt tartalmaz, és Carsten Nikolai éteri, szinte klasszikus ambient-drone munkásságából merít. Carsten elhagyta labort, és csíra- és pormentes helységeket széles terekre cserélte. A kötetlen siklást néha notoi makrók grafitpora takarja be, oppozit viszonyításul a tágas szédülethez. Nincsenek rossz vagy gyenge Noto lemezek. Nanofinom felbontású hangokat nyomtat, felszínük látszólag tükörsima, valójában sűrűre gyűrt, hirtelen dermesztett adat fodraként lebeg a mélyben hullámzó textúrák felett. Rideg felületén, kapillárisain át, a hajszálrepedésekből érzelmek oldódnak ki, s válnak légneművé, áthatva mindent. A X5 egy utazás (a sorozat) lezárása, a feloldás: "A Xerox Vol. 5-nek sok köze van a búcsúhoz. Nemcsak magától a sorozattól, amit közel két évtizede ápoltam, búcsú azoktól is, akik közel álltak hozzám. Úgy érzem, ezek az emberek felismerhetők a zenében. Nagyon személyes, érzelmes album."

Emlékszem az első Fennesz albumra. Azt hiszem az X-Peripheria Fesztiválon, Fennesz koncert előtt vettem, igényes, visszafogott grafikájú papírtokos cédé volt, Touch kiadvány. A Hotel Paral.lel (1997) újszerűen szólt, mint egy echte experimental album, egyszerre volt birtokában a felfedezés kíváncsiságának és valami furcsa humornak, valamint volt rajta három magyaros számcím (Dheli Plaza, Fa, Szabo) – huncit. Christian Fennesz egyébként osztrák, és a glitch/noise/experimental területek három évtizedes ismerője. A Mosaic című új album nem hiszem, hogy sokat tágítana Christian univerzumán, annak a kevésbé smirglis, harapós vagy toxikusabb szeletéből érkezik, szinte slágeres, ha átfókuszál a kedves hallgató a zizegő szemcsék szürke délibábján a slide-oló gitárok lassan lecsorgó tapétamintáira. A Mosaic is a Touch gondozásában jelent meg.

Jeremy Krinsley és Nick Sylvester kettősének, a Negative Supply-nak debütáló háromszámosa a tömör önkifejezés szimbóluma lehetne, a maga szerény 10 perc 43 másodpercével. A Les Glaneurs maxi pörgős dinamikájával ellenállhatatlan és lehengerlő.

Mikor láttam, hogy Nesa Azadikhah teheráni születésű techno-DJ/producer/zenész, nem tudtam elvonatkoztatni mindattól, ami a közelmúltban az iráni nőkkel történt. Fogalmam sincs, hogy csinálja a tizenhat éves koráig tombakon és dafon (iráni dobok) játszó művésznő, de alapítója a Deep House Tehran zenei platformnak (2014), támogatója aWomen, Life, Freedom mozgalomnak, és elképzelésem sincs, mennyit lehet odahaza. Frissen megjelent ötszámos EP-jét a Tension-t a berlini Paryìa adta ki. A dobművész múlt jelen is, nem múlt el, él és virul, Nesa nagyon érzi a technot, basszusai határozottak, ritmusai összetettek, és lemeze komoly támogatást kap Lindsey Wang-tól egy Polygonia remixfantázia formájában.

I'm having fun with ffvii rebirth, make no mistake, but I can see why my streamer of choice (tm) dropped out of it too.

Now, they of course could not get rid of the open world of course. It was a big part of the OG that you got to explore an open world map in 3d.

But it being a ps1 map it wasn't actually that big, it felt doable. Meanwhile rebirth suffers from 2 big problems.

1) it's a 2024 game and everything now has to look how it should feel while in the ps1 it was just implied that you were going around the world.

And most importantly 2) It has to bear the consenquences of being part of a trilogy that originally wasn't a trilogy.

You could feel it in remake too, that Midgard got stretched out for way too long but... It really, REALLY, is worst here.

And yeah it's for the open world sections. It HAS to be big for modern day standard and it shouldn't feel empty.

This results in way too many sidestuff that feel like a lot of smoke with no meat, differently from, like, yakuza which every side quest is fun in it's own way.

The Gilgamash side quests in the open world are fine, fun even. The combact ones acceptable, cute small challenges that help you understand how to pressure and stagger!

But did we really need to check 4 to 5 lifestreams lakes in every single zone? It doesn't add anything, the party doesn't have banter for it AND EVEN WORST! The gameplay for it is clicking triangle 3 times during every lake.

It's fodder, it feels like fodder and not a good one.

The divine Temple too are not great tbh but at least that unlocks lore in the codex.

But it is heavy it's a struggle to get to. And yeah it's not mandatory but for players that (like my streamer of choice tm and me) while not completionist likes to do what they see, it easily gives burn out.
