If you guys haven't seen the short Atompunk film Satisfaction Guaranteed and you like midcentury housewife revenge stories with some sci/fi retrofuturism (tw: gore near the end) you should check it out! It's GREAT

This weeks offering - Brasidas being woken on a sunny afternoon… yes, still on my Resort BS 🤭
Another colouring practice/colour study. To my surprise, I really enjoy painting fabric. Yeah…This is all about the fabric 😇
I probably won’t be back with anything new for a while - I have an outrageously ambitious project in mind next, so ‘til then, may this tide you over!

Another one I have started!
Oil takes forever to dry, so while I wait I'm gonna do a bunch more colour studies and maybe start a few more of these guys
Something I realized is that I don't have the proper red I need for mixing a good bright purple, so I need to pickup a quinacridone magenta for mixing those good good purples I want.

Shakespeare & Marlowe: Part Two
I mentioned a couple of posts back that I made a whole series of abstract mixed-media pieces that were inspired by and based on the lives and works of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. My first drawings were based on the supposed portraits of them both.

I started by tracing the outline of the portrait subjects using a light box and a fine pencil and then used watercolour pencils (these were the Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz watercolour pencils) making the colour quite vibrant by pressing quite hard but leaving enough space for it to blend. I also used some 'regular' coloured pencils (I forget what brand they were) for lines that I didn't want to lose once I started painting. I then used a paintbrush and some clean water to melt and blend the pencil marks. When painting - either with acrylic or watercolour/gouache paints or with watercolour pencils - I like to have at least 3 jars of water. One huge one (my biggest one is actually a big plastic food storage tub from a Pound Shop/discount store. I don't know where the lid is anymore...), a medium-sized jar, and a smaller jar... or just another jar I find in the cupboard under the kitchen sink because apparently, that's where I keep them. I don't really know why. I also have a box of baby food jars in the Stuff Cupboard Where The Electricity Thingy Is. Anyway... The big jar/tub gets rid of most if not all of the paint, the 'middle' one gets rid of any residue, and the last one stays clear and is good for diluting the paint and wetting your brushes. It saves you from having to refresh your water so often. The colours used were chosen to represent who they were as people and how they were perceived in their day. I briefly looked up the meanings of the colours that I had and went with those that closely matched the person. The one of Christopher Marlowe ended up a bit chaotic, but even if only some of what we think we know about him, it's rather apt! It was at this point I really got into the meanings of colour, colour psychology, and the ways colour can be used to describe things or tell stories - such as stained glass windows.

[ID: a digital comic in two panels featuring bungou stray dogs characters. the first shows atsushi banging open a door and shouting, dazai-san! are you oka- the second shows a shot from the anime where chuuya is holding dazai against a wall by his neck. the text reads, homoerotic atmosphere, and four squares with text point out whats happening. they read, casual hand in pocket, chokehold, knife, and lastly um... followed by two sweat drops pointing at chuuya's knee between dazai's legs. a tiny panel in the corner shows atsushi covering his eyes with his tiger paws and blushing as he says, i'm sorry... end ID]
come here. crack open the canon with me for a minute. consider. what if atsushi hadn't listened to everyone telling him dazai would be fine and left to save him only to witness whatever the fuck was going on in that cellar. consider the bit.
