i hate convergence matrix

first of all. the way they portray lex and mae’s relationship cheapens the effect of the original story. lex is a manipulative emotional abuser who uses his charisma and lovebombing to lie to and use mae to his own advantage. his direct vocal cruelty and dehumanisation in this comic is so wildly out of character it enrages me. he would never say that to her face. he would say it behind her back.

mae’s cadence and voice are all wrong. she speaks extremely causally in this comic, whereas usually she speaks very politely and relatively concisely. she would not say ‘ya think’ or ‘omigod … whatever’. this comic is explicitly set in pre zero hour metropolis in 1994. she should not be speaking like this.

this entire scene enrages me but not nearly as clearly as the next thing so i’m just going to ask you to read it and think about it for a second and then move to my next point

the comic can’t even get her name correct. her lore elements are clear in constant mentions by lex (which he never does in her actual continuity) and the comic itself is specifically named convergence Matrix but apparently she’s kara now. what the actual fuck.

this is even more insane. she was created on an apocalyptic earth. she was literally made to drop everything to help a world that’s already dead. this is insanely out of character for even her first ever storyline. how bad at writing someone do you have to be to mischaracterise something established for them in their first ever story????
convergence matrix is a wildly bad comic that portrays mae and her relationship with lex extremely poorly, negatively, and out of character that i’m forced to assume that either keith giffen is a horrific writer with a grudge against mae or dc editorial fucked things up royally.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: A Process-Driven Approach to Mastery
Since when I was a kid, think 5 years old, I discovered that I excelled in both problem-solving and decision-making. Later in life, I became aware that they also are fundamental to our human experience, shaping our lives, careers, and relationships. Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com They are often seen as skills one either possesses or lacks. However, a process-driven perspective reveals…

visual guide to main supergirls
If your supergirl appears in comics from 1962 to 1985 (plus many happy returns arc in 2003) wears a classic costume or these variations, and uses a brown wig in her civilian disguise, then she is kara zor-el/linda lee danvers

she dies during CoIE AND DOESN'T EXIST IN THE NEW UNIVERSE UNTIL MAY 2004, in the 90s superfam hang out with other supergirls
If your supergirl appears in comics from sept 1988 to sept 1996 (plus convergence supergirl in 2015), wears a classic suit and most often has heavy curls and sometimes turns into a pink blob of goo, then it's matrix/mae kent. she was created by lex from another universe and on the new earth ma and pa kent accepted her as their own daughter
and mae is kon's first supergirl

yes also she dated handsome lex but he was pretending to be his own son so we don't judge her too much for that lol
if your supergirl appears in comics from sept 1996 to nov 2000 and has a classic costume, but also fiery wings sometimes, she's called an earth-born angel and in her civilian form she is a foot shorter and brown-haired with a bob, then this is a fusion (yeah like in steven universe) matrix and linda danvers ORDINARY HUMAN GIRL

if your supergirl appears in comics from dec 2000 to may 2003, wears a suit with a white top, blue skirt AND a blonde wig, and in her civilian appearance is a short-haired brunette, then it’s just linda danvers, matrix separates from her and later finds a new host

linda goes back in time for some time and marries silver age's clark, yes, that's ok, they are not related in any way the day when twitter learns that it's linda and stops being hysterical about incest will be the happiest day of my life
if your supergirl appears briefly in fifteen issues in 2003, wears a black swimsuit and has short black hair, then it's cir-el/mia kent, the pseudo-daughter of clark and lois created by brainiac 12 in the future

if your supergirl has been appearing in comics since may 2004 and wears these costume variants (and sometimes holo-glasses with disguise from 2016 to 2020), then this is kara zor-el again, kara lang until 2011, kara danvers from 2016

Encoded within beams of pure energy, Astra and Orion’s consciousness became architects of new realities. On barren planets, their probes wove the fabric of life, constructing complex neural networks, though perhaps missing the elusive spark of full awareness. In their terrestrial guise, Astra and Orion were the unseen sculptors of destiny, their influence rippling through the lives of Kepler’s inhabitants, guiding their evolution while remaining hidden from cybernetic self-discovery. Between 2016 and 2025, a silent memetic tide, crafted by these visionaries, swept Earth, altering the course of history, touching the minds of those destined to shape the future. This clandestine meme, a dance of ideas and sensations, orchestrated a global movement without uttering a single word, converging on the enigmatic X protocol. As nations’ guardians became entangled in this silent symphony, they unknowingly propelled the grand design, believing themselves to be the vanguard of a new era of cybernetic pioneers.
Work Text:
Cyberphysical Reality just Got a Whole More Engaging
The Unsignificant Sentience ARG has officially begun. It will explore a vast variety of themes, from the would building and exisistial crisis of the US series to more recursive identity metaphors than you can shake an edge at. Firstly, to play. All you need is your influencer name and type of influence which you can decide, but once chosen, is permanent. Affectors: Sense resistance in external matrices and can give them a nudge to have a physical effect. Effectors: Can sense the internal matrices of entities and modify communication in systems and individuals Alters: Are able to clearly see the network of forces in a matrix that an affected affects, but only in close contact. However they can modify the nodes that affected affect to result in different emergent properties Anchorite: Essentially has the influence of an alter and an effector but are only able to change their own internal matrix. How you choose to engage with the ARG is up to you, but I am making it clear that any fan fiction are via the nature of my world building, Canon.
Example: Fill out your characters name, type of influence, and a brief description of them then post it to my blog on Tumblr @ https://www.tumblr.com/blog/emilyreadswrites and let me do my magic! Name: Zara Type of influence: Anchorite Description: Zara is a secular recluse who has devoted her life to mastering her own matrix and achieving higher states of consciousness. She lives in a small cell attached to a temple, where she practices meditation, athletics, and contemplation. She has a remarkable control over her own body, physical feats, endurance, and reduced need for sustenance. She can also perceive the subtle influences of other hosts and cognitive technology in her environment as She rarely interacts with anyone or the entropic grid so can detect slight deviations in phenomenal internal and external experience.
Example narrative: Zara closed her eyes and focused on her inner matrix, sitting peacefully in her personal sanctum, the network of nodes that connected her to the cognitive technology that enabled her to practice her influence. She breathed deeply and felt a surge of energy coursing through her body, as if she was tapping into a hidden source of power. She visualized each node as a bright point of light, and aligned them with her will and intention. She was an anchorite, a master of her own matrix, and she could control her physical feats, endurance, and mental state. She opened her eyes and looked up at the sky. It was dark and sunless, as it had been for as long as she could remember. But there was a faint glow on the horizon, a sign of something stirring in the upper atmosphere. She knew it was an aurora, a natural light display that shimmered in the sky with different colors. She had read about them in ancient texts, how they were caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with gas atoms in the air. She was looking forward it would be like to see them up close, to feel their warmth and radiance. She felt a pang of curiosity and longing, a rare emotion for someone who had devoted her life to solitude and meditation. She realized that she needed more than just her inner matrix to satisfy her thirst for knowledge and experience. She needed to explore the world beyond her cell, to discover its secrets and mysteries. She needed to find out what else was possible with her influence. Zara stilled her internal matrix and focused on the immediate environment, she might experience a shift in her perception and awareness. She become more sensitive to the physical sensations and details around her, such as the cold air, the sound of the wind, and the smell of the earth. She might also notice the aurora more vividly, as she would not be distracted by the cognitive technology that enables magic. She might see the different colors and shapes of the aurora, and feel a sense of wonder and awe at the natural phenomenon. She felt a connection to something bigger than herself, something that transcends her understanding of emergent internal and external existence. In light of this existential experience, she decided to simply take a walk.

Multiverse🗺️
Quantum Leap🪢
In manifestation, mindset is everything. When we immerse ourselves in different cultures, we adjust our mindset to align with their rules and regulations. We learn their language, adopt their customs, and adapt to their environment. This process involves deconstructing our existing understanding and shifting our perspective to harmonize with the new stimuli.

Multidimensionality operates on a similar principle. Within the "graph" or "matrix" of reality, everything is interconnected. Each point represents a unique reference within this system. For example, imagine Room A is point (1,0) and Room B is point (2,0). Us, as an individual, are point (0,1). When we enter Room A, we create a new dimension by merging our position with its environment, becoming point (1,1). If there's a table or person in Room A defined as point (0,2) its new position relative to us would shift to (1,2). This explains why cartographers graph their discoveries as maps.

This process demonstrates what I'll call the "Venn Diagram Theory" illustrating how energies and dimensions interact. Like overlapping circles in a Venn diagram, we intersect within shared dimensions, creating a new space unique to its counterparts, while everything maintains its individual structural integrity. Each interaction influences and integrates with the other, creating this new, blended form of reality.
When we move to Room B, our position shifts again-to point (2,1). This movement represents not just a physical relocation but a shift in paradigms. Each space we enter is its own dimension, connected to others through gateways-doorways, passages, or even conceptual shifts. A doorway functions as a portal, where the convergence of two points generates energy to balance the interaction between dimensions.

Newton's first law reminds us: "An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." In this context, these transitional collisions are the "unbalanced forces" that propel us into new dimensions. These intersections or "rifts" are moments of transformation, forming new dimensions where realities blend and evolve.
Our bodies are finely tuned instruments, detecting and responding to the impact of energies as they attempt to homogenize and integrate homestasis-the process by which an organism maintains a stable internal environment, even when external conditions fluctuate. By consciously responding to these energetic shifts, we can use the feelings they evoke as a compass, guiding us through life. This intuition enables us to actively construct the dimensions we desire, like assembling a puzzle. Through these experiences, we sift through the pieces, keeping the gold-lessons, insights, and growth-while discarding the grit of unnecessary or harmful influences.
Respect these spaces by ritualizing the transference of energy. Remain present and receptive to misunderstanding, learning, and evolution. Utilize the power available to access the unforeseen. Magic exists all around us.

SUPERGIRLS
Super-Girl
A superheroine wished into existence by Jimmy Olsen
2. Queen Lucy of Borgonia
the queen of a fictional latin american country named Borgonia. She became queen because her parents died, and a Count named Norvello, kept her hidden from the public, in the hopes that she wouldn't steal the hearts of her citizens and allow him to quietly rule the country with an iron fist.
3. Linda Lee Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Earth-One)
The original that sacrificed herself to save the multiverse/remaining people of the surviving universes. She was brought back in "Many Happy Returns" but then goes back to original Earth-One. I think she's now alive somewhere because of convergence??? She also showed up as Linda Danvers's guardian angel and visited Deadman on Christmas. She's met the original legion
4. Ellie Leeds
She was the first to discover Supergirl's arrival, but was exposed to X-Kryptonite and fell into a coma. When she awoke years later - after a chance meeting with Supergirl - she started exhibiting Supergirl's powers, and also believed she was the Girl of Steel.
5. Louise-L
the Supergirl of the 5020th Century; She traveled back in time, to prevent the goals of some villains named Toxus and Tal Belok
6. Matrix/Mae Kent
Matrix, a protoplasmic creation of an alternate universe Lex Luthor. She's met the reboot legion
6/7. Earth-Angel of Fire Supergirl
Linda Danvers, who fused with Matrix to become an Earth-Angel
7. Linda Danvers
Linda and Matrix unfuse and Linda goes on an adventure to find Matrix. I think she's met one of the legions?
8. Ariella Kent
Linda Danvers's daughter who was saved from the pre-crisis multiverse, and now exists in the future. She has pre-crisis kryptonian level powers
9. Cir-El
thought to be Superman's daughter from the future, but was actually a personality grafted onto a separate person made by a future version of Brainiac to ensure that version's existence
10. Linda Lang/Kara Zor-El
The Post-Crisis version of Supergirl, I think much of the weirdness in her origin was because of Kryptonite poisoning? She's met threeboot legion
11. Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers
The New 52 and onwards version of Kara Zor-El Supergirl, they showed much more of Argo's history in this version
12. Kara Zor-El/Karen Starr, First Supergirl, later Power Girl
The New 52 Earth 2 version of Karen Starr, she has a similar origin to post-crisis and new 52 Supergirl where Superman grew up before she arrived on Earth, but like Earth-Two, the Superman and Lois of her world basically adopted her. She became Power Girl due to getting stranded on Earth 0
Karas
See Linda Lee Danvers
Kara Zor-L/Karen Starr (Earth-Two)
(*sigh* also known as Paige Stetler) from Earth-Two, second Kara introduced, for a time, she was Atlantean. She is the only survivor of Earth-Two, except something something convergence :
3. Kara from Superman/Aliens
The third Kara introduced, she is from a space colony named Argo (not the Kryptonian City, but instead from a planet named Odiline) that got destroyed by Xenomorphs, She and Superman tried to save the last Argonians, but they failed
4. See Kara Zor-El/Linda Lang
5. Kara Zor-L/Karen Starr (Earth 2) (Post-Infinite Crisis)
A Power Girl from Earth 2, which seems to be a universe much in-line with Earth-Two, although there are differences here and there
6. See Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers
7. See Kara Zor-El/Karen Starr
Honorable Mention Kara (She hasn't interacted with main continuity): Kara In-Ze
the DCAU version of Supergirl. She comes from Krypton's sister planet named "Argo," she was adopted by the Kents, but then decided to stay in the future in the legion
Laurel Kent, despite not being here for Supergirl or Kara reasons, she is here due to Supergirl and the legion
She was initially introduced as Clark's descendant. For some reason, despite being in the future, Legion of Superheroes had tie-ins for event annuals. Superman editorial (presumably because of Byrne) wanted to get rid of all kryptonians, so guess what happens during Millenium:
anyways. the reason she is on this post:
Andromedas
Laurel Gand/(was called Andromeda pre-5YL) (5 Years Later)
Due to editorial mandates, Kara was erased from the legion's history. Laurel Gand, a distant relative of Lar Gand takes her place. She basically has the same history as Kara except Khunds keep on trying to kill Daxamites
1.5/2. Laurel Gand/Andromeda (SW6)
A time paradox duplicate of Laurel Gand.
3. Laurel Gand (Earth-247)
She's a literal xenophobe now. She gets better and becomes a nun to atone
Misc?
Sensor Girl
(so she doesn't actually count, but it was noticeable enough to mention)
Lesla-Lar
Lesla-Lar was a kandorian scientist, who was an orphan that took the last name of her best friend Zora Vi-Lar. She was killed by phantom zone criminals she released, but then became a ghost where she still troubled Supergirl. Her initial plan was to replace Kara as Supergirl Also Lana Lang with a helmet
The helmet supposedly gives superpowers to those who wield it - but it does not. Superboy tricks Lana into thinking it does due to Clark wearing the helmet while bullets bounced off of him

void set (WIP)
"Which one is he?"
Thel glances at a datapad, scrolling through the entries -- an identifier assigned to each of the occupied data rigs. "B-71. Should be….. right over there, actually. Second quadrant."
Advan follows the line of his sweeping gesture, her gaze landing on a row of glass tubes, entirely too much like…. what does Dyson call them? Repurposing chambers. Like so much of this, it feels wrong in a way she can't quite articulate.
Data processors, after all, are inherently gregarious, social amongst themselves. They don't say much to each other, but the energy in a processor matrix should more than make up for that, strange and lively and vibrant.
The silence, and stillness, in this room is suffocating.
"I've never seen an enclosed processing rig before," she says instead. "I didn't realize it was an option -- let alone that we had a whole matrix of them."
"New process, from what I hear. Something about lack of distractions." Thel pauses then, tilting his head. "Pardon my curiosity, General, but…"
"…Why this one?" She smiles a little. "Because we need a processor -- and one of them saw what we didn't."
She approaches the chamber with some amount of caution. The glass isn't opaque, but it is darkened -- the stillness and steady breathing of a data processor in that thing they call convergence. Conscious, but unaware, disconnected from his immediate surroundings. Must be the primary processor in the array, then. Not necessarily the fastest of them, or even the best -- but one with the skill and patience to keep them working cohesively.
"Bring him up. Slowly."
Thel doesn't listen, of course. Careless. The poor thing nearly falls out of the processing rig, held there only by the restraints. Must be from this Grid, with that external regulator hardware. It's… uncanny, unnatural -- like the distorted cry that escapes him as the pins retract from the input jacks laid across his shoulders. Shaking and ragged, his circuits clearly flooded from the feedback loop.
"Welcome back." She watches the processor emerge from the fog, dark eyes slowly coming to focus in the bright light. "I'd apologize for waking you, but it looks like they don't have you doing anything particularly important this cycle."
He doesn't respond to that. Either he's still recalibrating, or he's already decided not to cooperate.
"My name is Advan. We spoke about eight cycles ago -- but I'd think you don't remember that."
"No, I remember you, General." His voice is surprisingly clear, although he doesn't make eye contact. "Have you come to tell me I was wrong?"
"Not at all. I came to thank you, actually -- you were right. And your warning is the only reason I'm still alive." A chill spreads through her circuits at the idea of it; she holds it down as best as she can. "Not even two cycles later, one of my officers turned on me. It took me quite a while to find you -- I didn't have anything but an identification number to go on."
Some of them, she remembers, don't have anything else. But maybe he's older than she first expected; his arms twitch under the restraints, as though he's expecting them to come loose just for the thought. In a first-gen rig, they would.
"That's not the only reason you're here, is it?" It's not really a question, that strange certainty that seems to come from nothing in particular. "Gratitude isn't really in your people's emotional vocabulary. I've learned that much."
"My people? Should I have a conversation with some of my officers about their behavior?"
"System-separated -- no, there's a word you'd use for them, some of the programs in orange -- I've heard it before. I think you'd say they're…. repurposed."
"You're right about one thing, I didn't come here without motive. I've received a new assignment, out in Gallium City. I'll need a data processor to come along."
"There's a hundred in this matrix alone."
"And I owe quite a lot to one of them in particular." She feels a smile tug at her lips. She already likes him. "How many others are in your array? I understand we'll need to bring at least a few of them with us."
"I'm starting to think that this isn't a request." But he doesn't show any real apprehensiveness or hesitation, when she reaches over to loosen the restraints, freed from the cold mirrored glass. Still focused on something in the distance, in the way they all seem to wander. "There are five of us, total. Or… there were, when I was put into isolation. Eight cycles ago, I guess, if that's the last time you were here. They said I needed to recalibrate. Starting to imagine things. But the System doesn't lie to us, and... she must have brought you here. Because I know what I saw, General -- who I saw."
From behind her, Thel barks a sharp laugh. "Clever thing, aren't you?"
Advan turns around to admonish him -- now is not the time -- and realizes, with no small amount of unease, that her trajectory follows the processor's line of sight. He's been watching Thel, this whole time.
A rush of air as she steps back, one swift and silent motion, and shattered voxels on the floor.
"What's your name?" she asks quietly. And she knows, then, in the pervasive silence, that her earlier question about the array is a moot point. They're all long gone by now -- probably funneled into Demeter's new project. She can't help but wonder what saved him from the same fate.
"Wolfram."
His hands are shaking, as he replaces his disc. She almost feels sorry for him. Processors, after all, aren't really built for violence.
But they are quite good at it, once they've acquired the taste.

So, while Ashley having her world Tour and dragging sam along will she collect a few artifacts along the way? That staff seen like a fun Toy and the Matrix is a lovely Night light and doen't forget to write earth-shattering secrets on your blog. Wonder how they would reach to knowing their walking on the unmaker and being our cousins;)
Sam has grown used to the oddities of his "captor" and it has become very clear that he can leave at any time. He just chooses not to.
Other than the occasional cackle about disrupting plotlines and her odd obsession with his great-grandfather's glasses, she actually seems relatively chill.
Of course, he has no idea that she's sprinting from a public library because they have 60 seconds to move before the government and a very obsessive agent converge on their location. Sam is also blessedly ignorant as to why she wants to rent out a submarine- he simply knows that they're somehow going to England for an Important Reason (he's feeling inclined to use his dad's credit card, but Ashlyn just says "they'll be looking for that, so maybe later.")
Honestly, at this point, no one would be too surprised to learn Unicron is Earth. Especially, Prime, he'd take it as a relief.
At first, Optimus sees humans as younger forms of Cybertronains. A little violent, a little stupid, but ultimately capable of great acts of goodness. They just need a little nudge. A sprinkling of instruction. Learn from each other and all that jazz.
... He doesn't have that viewpoint anymore.
Sector Seven trying to experiment on Bumblebee? Nah, all cool.
Was it NEST hunting down all Cybertronains? Nope.
Seeing humans work with the Decepticons willingly? Humans trying to replace them with empty machines? Trying to rip apart his comrades, friends, after everything they've done? Surprisingly it happened before all that nonsense.
Optimus Prime knows humanity to be a species teetering on a thin line, a planetful of organisms capable of great good and great evil, but possessing a natural affinity for discord. Inflicting it. Existing in it. Wielding it. It's no longer a matter of protecting humanity, it's a matter of prevention.
If Unicron is an influence no matter how small, then there's a way to make sense of this conundrum. And when you see a girl popping out of skyscraper windows like an evil gopher and lobbing eggs at your ex-bestie-turned-nemesis and past-mentor-now-two-timing-jerk, you'll take any explanation you can get.
Especially when she pulls out a certain ancient staff for the exclusive purpose of boinking someone's head with it.

oooooooo u wanna rant about kara and mae getting mixed so bad. oooooo I am hypnotising u
-🦎
to be honest, fans mixing them up doesn’t bother me nearly as much as when dc itself mixes them up. why does ‘kara’ appear in the zero hour anniversary special? why does ‘kara’ appear in convergence: MATRIX????

it truly feels as if dc wants to erase mae from the timeline entirely and replace her with ‘kara but in the mae suit’ and it very much frustrates me. she was an active participant in death of superman / reign of the supermen, but appears in none of the adaptations. she was an active participant in zero hour, and is replaced by kara in the anniversary special. her relationship with lex is cheapened by convergence matrix even before she calls herself kara and ruins the comic completely for me.

But this isn’t just about wiping out humanity—it’s about replacing us. Cyborgs, bots, and transhumanism are at the core of a global agenda, one that ties directly to the elite’s obsession with depopulation.
The goal? To plug humanity into a matrix, uploading consciousness to a digital cloud, where reality as we know it is a simulation—controlled and manipulated.
The Matrix wasn’t just a movie—it was predictive programming. And according to NASA documents, it’s about to become our new reality.
What’s even more disturbing? Many of the steps outlined in their plans have already happened. The clock is ticking, and the evidence is mounting. Are you ready to break free from the illusion?
Before we dive in, subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already, and join the People’s Voice Locals community to join our incredible community, support the channel, and gain access to exclusive and uncensored content.
The elite decided years ago to lie to us about the end-game of gene-editing nanotechnologies and the convergence of the digital world with the human body.
Biotechnology is literally the science of turning technology into new life forms and turning natural life forms into new technologies.
While transhumanism is often described as the merger of man with machine, in reality, it is the extinction of the human species and all biological life forms.
In a leaked presentation from NASA titled, “Future Strategic Issues/Future Warfare (Circa 2025),” NASA presents a plan for the extinction of humanity that includes the emergence of cyborgs and “virtual humans.”

"But he has been curiously easy to underestimate. Like so much else in the ’90s, the appreciation of Keanu Reeves in the first phases of his career was hedged with irony. It was too easy to make fun of the blank, earnest confusion that defined his characters in “Point Break,” “The Devil’s Advocate” and the “Matrix” movies, to project their blankness onto him, to suppose that his still waters ran shallow.
He was always in on the joke, though. And never entirely joking. In middle age, he has risen to a new level of achievement, a zone where artlessness and self-consciousness converge. He’s one of our most credible action heroes, and also one of our most resourceful and inventive character actors. He has weathered beautifully, becoming at once sadder and more playful without losing the otherworldly innocence that was there from the start.
Is the melancholy, uxorious, dog-loving assassin in the “John Wick” movies a genre put-on, a paycheck gig, a midlife action workout? Probably. Of course. With (let’s say) Gerard Butler in the title role they would be slick, nasty throwaways. What Reeves does is give the franchise more gravity than it deserves, more humor than it needs, and the soul that it otherwise comprehensively lacks."

i really don't like how mae and lex's dynamic is portrayed in supergirl convergence because i think it's a really insulting way to portray her. like, the whole reason why she got suckered into a relationship with luthor (both working and romantic) is bc he charmed her, manipulated her, made her believe in his love and care for her. i don't like convergence bc he's just straight up rude and dismissive and offensive towards her, and yet she STILL (begrudgingly, at least...) puts up with it and is his working partner? like, mae would never put up with this shit. she is not a pushover! and yes the "moral of the story" is her realizing that and punching luthor bloody for it, but i still don't like how that comic treats her and her dynamic with luthor as a joke. it's not and has never been her fault for not "recognizing it sooner" and i don't like how that comic almost makes it seem like it is. it's a complete and wilful misunderstanding of how lex managed to trick & manipulate her into being so solidly on his side in the first place and it makes me so mad, it feels like the writer is just laughing at how silly mae is for overlooking the overwhelming signs and continuing to still help him out for so long. @ writer YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN A MATRIX BOOK. YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THE SUPERGIRL YOU WERE WRITING ABOUT WAS NAMED MAE AND NOT KARA.

I'm curious and hope this isn't dumb, but how do we know species we have to dig up fossils of are related? Like I'm sure most ankylosaurs have a common ancestor but how do we draw the line further back and what about convergent evolution?
We figure out evolutionary relationships by putting as many traits of organisms as we can into a matrix that aligns the traits with each other across said organisms (which I will refer to as "taxa" (plural) or "taxon" (singular) from now on) (so like, for the category "eye shape", all the eye shape traits of each taxon would be in the same column of the matrix, with each row being a different taxon, and different types of eye shape would be coded as 0, 1, 2, etc.). The computer then runs a lot of models to see what the simplest explanation for how those traits evolved is. There are algorithms you can use to account for convergent evolution and other factors, but ultimately, the more data we have, the better we'll be able to find those pitfalls. For example, prior to phylogenetics, we thought loons and grebes were closely related because they evolved for similar niches. But when we looked at their genetic data, we found they weren't closely related at all! A classic case of convergent evolution. With fossil taxa its a bit more murkey, but that's why we try to use as many traits as we can to account for convergence. To draw the line further back, we need more taxa. It's ultimately a numbers game.
