"Scientists have developed a way to dramatically reduce the cost of recycling certain electronic waste by using whey protein.
Their method allows for the easy recovery of gold from circuit boards at a cost of energy and materials amounting to 50 times less than the price of the gold they recover—these are the numbers that big business likes to see.
Indeed, the potential for scalability depends on this sort of cost savings, something traditional e-waste recycling methods just can’t achieve.
Professor Raffaele Mezzenga from ETH Zurich has found that whey protein, a byproduct of dairy manufacturing, can be used to make sponges that attract trace amounts of ionized gold.
Electronic waste contains a variety of valuable metals, including copper, cobalt, and gold. Despite gold’s public persona as being either money or jewelry, thousands of ounces of gold are used in electronics every year for its exceptional conductive properties.
Mezzenga’s colleague Mohammad Peydayesh first “denatured whey proteins under acidic conditions and high temperatures, so that they aggregated into protein nanofibrils in a gel,” writes the ETH Zurich press. “The scientists then dried the gel, creating a sponge out of these protein fibrils.”
The next step was extracting the gold: done by tossing 20 salvaged motherboards into an acid bath until the metals had dissolved into ionized compounds that the sponge began attracting.
Removing the sponge, a heat treatment caused the gold ions to aggregate into 22-carat gold flakes which could be easily removed.
“The fact I love the most is that we’re using a food industry byproduct to obtain gold from electronic waste,” Mezzenga says. In a very real sense, he observes, the method transforms two waste products into gold. “You can’t get much more sustainable than that!” ...
However the real dollar value comes from the bottom line—which was 50 times more than the cost of energy and source materials. Because of this, the scientists have every intention of bringing the technology to the market as quickly as possible while also desiring to see if the protein fibril sponge can be made of other food waste byproducts.
E-waste is a quickly growing burden in global landfills, and recycling it requires extremely energy-intensive machinery that many recycling facilities do not possess.
The environmental value of the minerals contained within most e-waste comes not only from preventing the hundreds of years it takes for them to break down in the soil, but also from the reduction in demand from new mining operations which can, though not always, significantly degrade the environments they are located in.
[Note: Absolutely massive understatement, mining is incredibly destructive to ecosystems. Mining is also incredibly toxic to human health and a major cause of conflict, displacement, and slavery globally.]
Other countries are trying to incentivize the recycling of e-waste, and are using gold to do so. In 2022, GNN reported that the British Royal Mint launched an electronically traded fund (ETF) with each share representing the value of gold recovered from e-waste as a way for investors to diversify into gold in a way that doesn’t support environmentally damaging mining.
The breakthrough is reminiscent of that old fairy tale of Rumpelstiltskin who can spin straw into gold. All that these modern-day, real-life alchemists are doing differently is using dairy and circuit boards rather than straw."

Melon didn't stand a chance.
One moment he's staring the end of their journey over the horizon, and the next he's sent plummeting into the awaiting maw of the trench he stood over by a hearty smack of a claw.
He yelps as he tumbles, twisting in the air for a heartstopping moment before his back meets a crag. Mario's cries are muted by rushing wind as he slips again, falling falling falling--
A heavy thud echoes as he collides--bounces-- off another rock face. His ears rings with the rattling in his skull---
A sharp thwack of his head hitting a jutting ledge, and suddenly Melon doesn't hear-- or feel-- much of anything the rest of the way down.
A metal tang coats his tongue red, and the sting of the air bites against his bruises.
No weight on his back anymore--
Everything hurts.
--the boy...Mario. Where's Mario? D-did he fall too--
Can't move.
--he needs to get up. His human cub, he could be hurt o-or--- get up--
Stay down.
--get up get up GET UP--
Melon stays down, can't muster the strength to listen to the mantra in his head. Instead, all he hears is the desperate wails of Mario, and it's enough to force his eyes open just a sliver. He blearily looks up.
At the edge of the cliff he tumbled from stands the silhouettes he can only barely make out; three huge, three smaller, all laughing and pointing and grinning toothily at the heap of him. The leader- and he must be, with how he leers cockily over the ledge-- sneers down at him.
"Thank ye for the delivery, lad! We've been lookin' all over for this little bastard," he says, and without a care he swings a hollering Mario over the ledge by the scruff. The boy twists precariously in his grip --one slip from falling-- and reaches out for Melon with terrified tears in his eyes. He wails some semblance of his name, and Melon feels his gut twist.
no
"Come now, lad, I see that long face from here; ye nothin' to worry about! Brat may've been a pain in the arse to get, but it'll be worth it in the end. Pirate's Honor: we'll take real good care of 'em," The leader gloats, ugly grin stretching wider as he flicks the boy's nose with a sharp claw. "Just like we have his snivellin' flake of a brother. They'll fetch a fine cut yet."
No no no give him back
"I reckon ye wanna say g'bye at least, aye? I could grant that much, bein' a frog of honor and wot-not." The captain holds Mario high above his head, like an angler would his prized catch, and grins down at Melon from his spot above.
"Go on then. Tell 'em 'afore I change me mind."
Something twisted and ugly clogs Melon's throat with bile and copper. He bares his teeth and tries tries tries to bark, to roar, anything to demand his human cub back to him.
GIVE HIM BACK, his mind screetches. But all that crawls out of his mouth is a rattling, broken whimper. It drags his strength with it by the scruff, spilling in a tiny puddle of spittle and grime and blood as his vision begins to waver. His eyes glaze over and fall closed against his will.
And within the canopy of booming laughs and grating cackles, the last thing Melon hear is Mario's cries.
--------------------------------------------
AND HERE IT IS.
Part 10 of Melon's Adventure, FINALLY COMPLETE, and with it Arc 1 of this story has come to a close!
I'm glad I managed to finish this arc even with it being forced into a hiatus alongside my burnout months back; I had an absolute blast revisiting my childhood and telling the story in a way I've always imagined it as a kid.
Now, given that it's been a while since the last part, I've taken the liberty to compile all of Melon's Adventure into the #melon's adventure tag for ease of access if you'd like to read it back from the beginning!
Despite this marking the end of Arc 1, I'm hoping to make this the start of me delving back into my Super Mario AU, albeit in a slightly different way. There's still plenty of stories there I'd love to share with ya'll. :>
In fact, in related news: I'm actually planning on opening an online store, and my first planned launch will be themed on Melon's Adventure! More information to come on that relatively soon as more work is done.
At any rate, I hope ya'll enjoyed this story! More to come soon! owo

Consider:
Leo Valdez was not born. Instead, two pairs of hands form him from bronze and steel and gold. His hair is copper wires so thin they bounce like natural curls, and his eyes glimmer with silver flakes. The joints of his body are plated so delicately, so perfectly, the segments are near indiscernible, smoothly gliding over each other. Faint traces of fingerprints and flecks of impurity are deliberately left behind for their uniqueness, a form of impossible signature of his creators.
Most importantly, gilded bars curl around each other in his chest, protecting the red-red-red flame that pushes his eyes open everyday, that beats in tune with his thoughts, that heats his body to expand and grow.
A metal child is not so different from a human one, and yet is so far from it at the same time. He is curious, about the world, about himself, and he picks apart toys and TV remotes and his arms, spilling their secrets before his constantly shifting eyes. He does not cry from fatigue or thirst or hunger, but a bump, a dent, a scratch never fail to draw tears. He splashes in the rain and snow, carefully bundled in waterproof coats and jackets, and runs from baths like he's possessed, fire flickering in fear.
The first time he meets someone like him, an endeavour he had long thought hopeless, it is a malfunctioning dragon others call for the death of; he is too unpredictable, too dangerous, too broken. Leo looks him in ever-shifting eyes glimmering with silver and sees himself if the cage in his chest ever bends, cracks, shatters, if the gears beneath his skin ever jam and stick and wear down irreversibly.
It is not golden flowers and godly aid that preserve him; just as he'd done for his twin-in-all-but-appearance, he creates a new body, with new fingerprints and impurities mapping his design. His hair is more bronze than copper, now, and his eyes more gold than brass. The plates of his joints scrape against each other faintly, and the gears of his bones grind together uncomfortably — he only had so much time, so much material to use, he could not polish every element of himself in the way he wished, but it holds together.
Most importantly, he reinforces the cage in his chest, coats it in layers upon layers of metal, to ensure his flame will not go out in the explosion, that Festus will be able to salvage it and lay it gently in the chest cavity carefully carved in his new body, bringing it to life.
He returns to Camp, movements more clunky and mechanical than should be, and his siblings finally pin down his segmented limbs, his shifting eyes, his clicking fidgeting. They are ecstatic, just as fascinated with him as they had been with Festus, and he lets them. He lets them take him apart, piece by piece, clean out the sand of Ogygia from his organs, polish and oil his gears until they glide against each other, press new fingerprints, new signatures of belonging, against his skin.
Most importantly, they craft him a secure, intricate cage, with golden flames licking up the bars, with delicate chains shielding it from the elements, and his flame settles inside it, flickering happily, finally truly, truly comfortable in the cage of his body.
Leo Valdez may not have been born, but he was crafted with the most loving hands imaginable, and is that not so much better, for a son of the Craftsman?

IRL Sixsona Designs Pt. 2: Makeup Edition
Hey y'all! This is second in a series of a few extra sixsona posts that @lightleckrereins and I are doing this week. The first post is here, showing the real-life vinyl inspirations we used!
This time around, I'm doing yet another hypothetical: what makeup would be used for each sixsona design!! My list of makeup recommendations for Six cosplayers is probably the post I'm second-most proud of (after sixsonas ofc). When I was initially working on that I kept seeing makeup that would be perfect for some of our sixsona designs, so because I have absolutely zero chill of course I had to figure out the full makeup plots for each.
The basic rules were - one glitter - one eyeshadow palette - and two additional products to fill in any gaps, as needed (this included fun stuff like an extra glitter or liquid liner, but also practical things like additional eyeshadow shades when needed or a liquid base for more sheer colors)
Tumblr media
White (swing): Colourpop palette in Cloud 9, NYX Metallic Glitter in Lumi-Lite, Danessa Myricks Colorfix Matte in Lift, Urban Decay Moondust Liquid Eyeliner in Pyro
Tumblr media

Biv, MAC Eye Shadow in If It Ain't Baroque Maroon (C/P): Juvia's Place in The Berries, Lemonhead Spacepaste in Wine Safari, MAC Pigment in Gold, Glisten Cosmetics wet liner in Bloody Mary Lavender (H/P): Juvia's Place in The Violets, Barry M Biodegradable Body Glitter in Hypnotic, MAC Dazzleshadow in It's All About Shine, Glisten Cosmetics wet liner in Amethyst
Some credit info: Designs for white, yellow, cream, mint, amber, peach, magenta, maroon, lavender + all sixsona art featured here by @lightleckrereins. Original designs for bronze, coral, emerald/peacock, and light blue are mine. I did most of the sourcing work for the makeup, but Sofia created the inspiration + made final decisions on the makeup for all her designs.

✧⊹JARETH BALLROOM COAT⊹✧
[This post is part of a series about constructing Jareth’s entire masquerade ball costume. Visit the master post here.]
Making the Buttons [Post 1 of 2] - This post is an explanation of the process. - Post 2 is a video.
The buttons were the very first thing I made, once enough pretty shiny materials had been collected. They were so much fun. They weren't hard, it just took a bit of time and attention to detail. With that, let's get to it...
The coat has two in front and two in the back. Here are two different photos, the first from Aria Couture and the second from Yosa Addiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’ll see that they’ve suffered some damage through the years, and as of now there are no high definition close-ups of them, so that we can really look and discern what might have been there back when everything was intact. One of the front ones is gone!
What I did notice was a general warmth and multidimensional sort of coloring about them, which is why my approach involved layers. A lot of aspects of this costume don’t present themselves as definitively colored; there’s always a two-toned or iridescent quality to them. For that reason, I built everything on top of a layer of copper flakes. It gave the buttons the warmth they needed despite that the rest of what is seen within them is cool-toned.
There are the blue, spherical cabochons lining the outside; spherical, not angular. Within them, there is seemingly a mix of silver/metallic beads, and “crystals” that may have been anything from blue, to green, to yellow. Hard to say. This part comes down to the individual!
Tumblr media
Does this diagram make sense and it is necessary? Probably not.
My choice was to do alternating silver and transparent grey beads, and then pool the center with hot glue and sea glass shards that were left over from the breaking down process. Since making the video of the replica, I did start to feel that less vs. more looked better for the glass, so I pruned a few pieces out of my buttons. I like them overall, but they need to be secured really well, and there was/is still a risk of shards popping out. It is a delicate costume.
Next, we need to discuss the actual button bases. This was tricky. The whole thing is going to be covered, so they can’t be stitched on in the normal way, as there’s no outlet for the needle. You might be thinking a shank button would be good, since they are flat with protruding holes underneath:
Tumblr media
BUT there's so much stuff that needs to go on them, they would definitely end up drooping. My solution to this problem was to buy flat just run-of-the-mill 4-hole buttons that were stapled onto cardboard, and remove the cardboard with the staples still attached. Then tighten the staples so that my needle could juuuuust get through.
Tumblr media
How do you like these puppies?!
Attaching them wasn’t too hard. I held the button a little bit away from the coat, brought my needle to the inside interfacing, and poked it out where the button should go, then brought the needle underneath the staple, then back into the coat, etc. etc. making 5-10 loops before pulling the thread and drawing up the button against the coat. Then, the needle was brought through the inside and knotted tightly into the interfacing, almost exactly where it had begun.
Tumblr media
Yayyyy buttons.
Because these were so delicate, they were almost the last thing added to the coat. They had to go on before the lining was closed, obviously, so that’s the only reason they came before the glue shenanigans. Glue shenanigans were all top switched once the coat didn’t need to be handled or laid down anymore.
So... there it is. Some of this felt redundant but then I remember that there are new people visiting my blog, and I want things to be easy for them.

i've got a lot of ideas for cybertronian foods and where they came from so here's some! (just gonna call them their earth equivalent for ease of naming stuff)
pancakes - a dish created in tarn as a result of miners needing to stretch out their rations. it's typically made by grinding some sort of metal (typically iron or copper since it was what was most available) into a powder and then mixing it together with liquid energon. the resulting batter is then fried within a shallow pan (hence pancakes) and can be served plain or in most expensive cases, topped with mercury, gold flakes, and syrupy energon
pizza - created in kaon when the gladiator arenas needed a quick easy snack to feed their spectators. typically made by creating a type of flatbread out of copper or steel powder mixed with energon and sodium flakes. it is then traditionally baked on the edge of one of the smelting pits until firm and then topped with an energon sauce and chunks of cheap slag. once the dish spread outside the arenas it was then adapted to be cooked on hot stones instead of near the smelting pits
of course we gotta do a burger - created in helex as a quick snack for workers on break this dish is typically made in a similar manner as pizza, with a dough made from energon, crushed sodium, and some kind of cheap metal ground into a fine dust. the resulting dough is then cooked in an oven and then cut into two pieces. sandwiched between them is a patty typically made from cheaper slag metals leftover from production and some kind of savoury energon sauce. it's a filling dish meant to keep workers going on a low budget and once it left helex it got upgraded to bar and cafe food with all sorts of fillings and toppings! the most common kinds are some type of pressed metal (lettuce), hunks of cut metal that's been submerged in some kind of pickling agent (pickles), and a type of native cybertronian plant sliced thin (tomato).
ice cream - a vosian dessert this dish is made by storing energon at low temperatures and then scooping the resulting sludge (since energon doesn't really freeze fully) into a cup or wafer cone made from pressed aluminium. it is then topped with gold shavings and hunks of gemstones for an added crunch. each city in vos tends to have their own special flavours and extra toppings
popcorn - made by fully dehydrating energon and then tossing the resulting chips into some kind of heating device. the energon puffs up and the chunks are then tossed in some kind of flavouring agent like sodium (for savoury) or gold (for sweet). this dish doesn't have a city of origin, though historians speculate that it first appeared in iacon due to the prevalence of these snacks among the working class.
tears off my shirt AAAAAH I LOVE CYBERTRONIAN FOOD.
as much as i enjoy the alien aspect of them simply consuming fuel, i think i can indulge in some cybertronian cooking… I feel like they can have a little treat. Give those robots a burger.
i’ve thought a lot about cybetronians cooking before, i am so charmed by it. would have loved to see cybertronian street food. i just know it's some crazy shit.

Nova's Calamity
Dice set made from a pair of other dice sets; I made them for @candiednova based on their OC, Calamity, but remade certain pieces as I wasn't happy with the initial casting--and these are the leftovers of the original and recasting, polished and inked! Honestly, I love how they look now that I've cleared them up.
[Dice description: A 7-piece dice set inked with metallic purple numbers, though the highest number on each die is inked in a gold to red gradient. The d8, d6, and d4 are a translucent reddish-magenta in regular light, though display a yellow-orange-pink gradient when backlit. They feature inclusions of semi-fine copper glitter, shiny purple flakes, and a bit of gold leaf. The d6's 6-face has the number replaced with a simplified, geometric open eye. The d20, d100, d12, and d10 are largely opaque, being composed of a metallic, deep red with purple veins. Bits of purple and gold flakes are visible. The d12's 12 face is covered in a layer of golden beads (and contains a piece of topaz resting upon them—though it isn't visible) and the d20's 20 face has leaf-shaped, holographic glitter pieces surrounding the number. | End description.]

They sit in the shelter of the tree with their backs against the strange, living warmth of its trunk and eat their pastries. It’s more relaxing here than Imogen expected; the gentle shushing of the leaves overhead filters out the sounds of the market crowds, so that the most obtrusive noise at present is the metallic clanking of FCG gnawing on the tongs Pike Trickfoot gave him for a snack.
A group of children, ranging in age from about nine to eleven, clatters by over the cobblestones. She recognizes them as the same group from the clock tower — seven kids with a big, shaggy dog in tow. Coming to a halt by one of the market toy stalls, they brandish an armory of homemade weapons at a dragon-shaped streamer fluttering on a pole atop a display of kites.
“Raishan the Deceiver!” shouts a boy wielding a wooden sword in each hand.
“We’ll not fall for your lies!” cries a girl with two twigs sticking out of her hair.
“How come I always have to be Percy?”
A girl with a somewhat bedraggled grey goose feather tucked behind her ear and an impatient expression puts her hands on her hips and turns to face the complainer, a sulky boy in glasses.
“Because you wear spectacles,” she explains, as though this should be obvious.
“Percy’s cool!” insists a little girl armed with a wooden pot lid and a cricket bat.
“Do you want to trade, then?”
“No! I’m Pike!”
Imogen looks at Matilda. Is it upsetting to her, to see the same game that was made of her life being played again, so carelessly, by a bunch of children? But she’s watching them with her chin on her knees and her arms wrapped around her ankles, smiling.
“It’s nice,” she says wistfully, “They’ll never have to know Whitestone any other way, than this.”
“Wish it could’ve been like that for you.”
She shrugs lopsidedly, but doesn’t say anything. After a hasty, muttered discussion amongst the kids everyone’s pockets are emptied, a handful of copper is exchanged for the kite, and they dash off with the big dog loping, bearlike, after them.
Matilda gets to her feet, sucking the last sticky flakes of pastry from her fingers. “There’s somewhere else I’d like to visit, outside of town, if that’s all right.”

Automotive Glitter
@dropkickwritersblock “ Write a piece about a glitter infestation “
At some point during yesterday’s shift, Robbie had gotten anti-seize compound on the underside of his left forearm and hadn’t washed it off at the end of the day.
Today, microscopic copper flakes gleamed on the black vinyl lining the Charger’s driver side door. His sheets had a brownish-glitterish-sheen where his arm had rubbed clean. There was glittery machine lubricant on the kitchen table, inside his sweatshirt, on the collar of his leather jacket, on his towel, on the edge of his bedroom door, on his lunch-bag, and on the back of Gabe’s neck.
That’s what they call trace evidence, Eli remarked as Robbie scrubbed his sweatshirt in the sink with dishwashing soap. The grease was coming out, but the metallic flakes just spread around. Try adding salt.
Lacking better ideas, Robbie shook some table salt onto the glittery spot. A greenish stain of corroded metal appeared after a few more seconds of rubbing. Super helpful. Thank-you.

At the center of the village, flocked by candles and candle-stumps, Pix knelt at the foot of the star-strewn obelisk in the heart of the Vigil. Saorlaith had not yet been named the first time they'd stepped onto these grounds, infant that he was, but Pix’s baby brother had nonetheless babbled happily in his mother’s arms as they laid Pix’s father to rest. When the time came for the two of them to send off their mother, Pix and Saorlaith had knelt her vigil together. Saorlaith had cried from evening to moon-high, Pix’s hand in his a shield and a lifeline in one.
Tonight, his knees aching on the sandstones before Saorlaith’s altar, Pix held his little brother’s vigil alone.
As the sun spirit laid her head down to slumber, drawing back her ribbons of crimson and amber with sleepy quietude, the spirits of the ancestors winked into brilliant brightness across the domed sky. Pix’s mother and father gazed down upon him from the cosmos, as did his aunt, step-uncle, grandparents, grand-uncles, grand-aunts, and all the other relatives he knew only from his mother’s stories. His mother used to point them out on quiet nights, filling the air with tales of long-dead warriors and scholars forever enshrined in their studies. When Saorlaith’s candle burned out at dawn, he’d join them in the heavens.
Even as chill blades of the desert wind sliced through the fabric of Pix’s robe, Saorlaith’s spirit glowed much more peacefully—almost mockingly so—on his copper candle stand than it had in life. Pix’s sickly younger brother had clung to life the same way he’d clung to Pix’s hand every time they wandered through the crowded markets: eyes darting back and forth, his sweat-slick fingers laced together his sole tether to stability. Pix had loved his too-small, too-still brother from the moment he'd held him in the crook of his elbow. He'd loved him fiercely, fearfully, when the cleric had shaken his head and declared that his brother's fate would be up to the ancestors. It wasn't until his third birthday, when the cleric returned to them a clean bill of health, that their mother gave him his name: Saorlaith. Little light, it meant. Our little miracle.
It took all of Pix’s will to pray, head bowed, eyes trained on the steady glow of his brother’s candle, rather than to cry out to the sprawling spirits of the ancestors above. First, they took his father, then his mother, then Saorlaith—his baby brother; his little light. He had been barely fourteen.
Everything happens for a reason, his mother’s voice breathed in his ear, closer than usual in this space between his mourning and the night’s respectful stillness. As the light gives way to darkness, so too does darkness yield to light. Good and bad, right and wrong, just and evil—the two forces circle in a perfect, endless balance. There can be no happiness without suffering; no life without death.
It was Saorlaith’s time, conveyed the phantom touch of his mother’s hand on his shoulder. He is safe with us. Soon, he will take his place amongst the ancestors.
What about me? The thought arose before Pix could quash it. What am I to do without him?
The spirits at his back sighed. If they answered, Pix didn’t hear it.
The cosmos revolved around the sky as the ancestors carried out their stalwart watch. The worn-out husk that was Pix’s body seemed a foreign thing to him; the pulse in his neck and the breath that his lungs drew inspired in him a mild sense of confusion. Observed by no one but the dead, Pix unwound, his armor flaking into dust, his skin nothing more than scrap metal scratched bare. He had nothing left to be strong for.
A trickle of wax ran down the side of Saorlaith's candle as he hovered in serene luminescence on his copper stand. Pix longed for the night to draw on, for the sun to stay asleep in her peaceful slumber, for Saorlaith to burn perpetually by his side. The flickering flashes in the corners of his eye could have been the edges of Soarlaith's tattered robes. It even smelled of him—all incense and mourning.
Pix knew better than to hope for miracles, so he couldn't begrudge the sun spirit as she awoke from her nightly slumber to stretch her fingers across the sky. The ancestors winked out of view as they headed off to partake in the tranquil comforts found only in death. Coaxed by the sun's rays, Saorlaith’s candle dimmed sleepily on his stand.
Don’t leave me. Pix pleaded uselessly with Saorlaith the way he had done hundreds of times before, the panic building in his throat at the thought of losing his brother in a crowd, or to a stranger, or a thousand other ways. Stick by my side always. You mustn't go where I cannot follow.
Pix found that he could move when he raised his hands to the base of the altar. A mere two sunrises ago, he’d laced the fingers of his right hand in-between Saorlaith’s left as he’d knelt at their bedside. Now, his hands found only each other as he clasped them together in prayer.
“May the ancestors accept this spirit, Saorlaith Rafiyagas, into their ranks. May Saorlaith Rafiyagas find his way to his eternal resting place. May he dwell in peace amongst the ancestors forever.”
Saorlaith’s candle flickered, once, and went out.
The spell that had fallen over the Vigil in the night dissipated with the bustle of dawn. Pix uncurled his fingers and, in one fluid motion, rose with the spirit of the sun. He’d have to check into work before long, and the roof needed to be patched.
May the stars guide your path, whispered the sand stirred up by his footsteps. Et lux in tenebris lucet. Light shines in darkness.

What Can I Do To Protect Pipes From Corrosion On The Inside?
Internal pipe corrosion is a major issue for many oil and gas companies with a whopping estimated global cost of around $2.5 trillion. Pipelines carry natural resources such as oil, gas, chemicals, and petroleum to related companies and production plants from specified locations. Sadly, these intricate structures are highly prone to rust and corrosion over time.
Tumblr media
Luckily companies such as DISTEK specialize in resolving these issues through Corrosion resistance coating. We have nailed down some effective methods to keep your pipe in optimal condition and avoid future problems.
Preventive Measures For Pipe Corrosion
Corrosion is one of those problems that worsen over time if we don't fix it. If we ignore it it can pose serious problems for buildings and the environment. The good news is that there are different ways to prevent excessive corrosion in pipes. These methods help to avoid serious problems and keep them safe.
Keeping A Close Eye On Pipeline Health
The first step in preventing pipe corrosion is to conduct regular inspections. This allows you to identify any signs of corrosion at an early stage and take appropriate action. Inspect the visible sections of your pipes for any discoloration, flaking, or pitting. In addition to inspections, regular maintenance is crucial. Consider hiring a professional plumber to clean your pipes and remove any built-up deposits. This can help prolong the lifespan of your pipes and prevent corrosion.
Provide Protective Coating
Another effective way to protect your pipes from corrosion is by applying a protective Corrosion resistance coating. Thermo-diffusion coatings are often used to create a barrier between the metal pipe and the water flowing through it.
This coating can prevent contact between the metal and corrosive substances, thus reducing the risk of corrosion. Consult a professional plumber for the most suitable coating option and ensure it is applied correctly for maximum effectiveness.
Use Corrosion-Resistant Pipes
When replacing or installing new pipes, choose corrosion-resistant materials. Stainless steel, copper, and plastic pipes are ideal options since they are less prone to corrosion than typical iron or steel pipes. Keep in mind that using the proper pipe material can greatly reduce corrosion risk and extend the life of your plumbing system.
Protecting pipes from internal corrosion is essential for maintaining the integrity and functionality of your plumbing system. At DISTEK, we are dedicated to providing top-quality Corrosion resistance coating for steel products.
Our Corrosion resistance coating can help you safeguard your pipes and ensure their longevity. Don't let corrosion wreak havoc on your plumbing system, choose us for reliable and effective pipe protection.

decided to go back over my fey flecks headcanon and flesh it out somewhat more, so don't mind me...
FEY FLECKS
Creatures born in The Fey Realm almost all have one trait in common besides the obvious - all of them with eyes have fey flecks.
Fey flecks are an interesting phenomenon where the iris has floating artefacts that resemble glitter, or bits of metal shards, harmlessly swimming around the pupil.
The genetic mutation does not harm your vision and appears to be merely visual.
At one point in time some scientists decided to dissect fey eyes to learn more about them and what causes them, dissecting eyes from many different specimens native to The Fey Realm during this investigation.
During the investigation it was found that fey eyes have thin membrane sacks covering the front of them.
These sacks are split into three sections by thin walls made of more membrane, one section covering the sclera, one covering the iris and lastly one covering the pupil - each segment being filled with a protective liquid.
The liquid is as clear and thin as pure water is, with a salty smell and taste to it.
The scientists believed this liquid could be the same liquid that tears are made of, but the technology at the time of their investigation was unable to confirm this.
In fact, unlike tears, this odd fluid appears to both boost dark vision in fey creatures while also simultaneously keeping their eyes from drying out in harsh climates.
Another interesting question regards the fact that the sclera and pupil sections have no artefacts in them, while the iris section has these so-called fey flecks.
There is no solid theory on what causes the bizarre flakes to form in these protective eye sacks, nor what causes their different colourations, but they seem to cause no harm or aid.
Confirmed to be real metals, their creation is a mystery.
Though it is recorded that it's possible for them to appear in one of four types of metal; gold, copper, bronze or silver.
It's also recorded that eye colour doesn't dictate the colour of fey flecks you get.
While offspring are more likely to have the same eye flecks as their parents, this also isn't guaranteed and they could have completely different fey flecks instead.
Something else to be noted is that a later investigation had documented the fact that Exandrian-born elves also have these protective eye sacks and fey flecks.
The new investigation also reported that there's a 60% chance of half-elves and quarter-elves developing these sacks and fey flecks, but there's only a 10% chance for the offspring of quarter-elves to also develop these odd traits.
In conclusion, scientists believe that this genetic mutation came about in response to some event where The Fey Realm had been plunged in darkness for some time, resulting in generational blindness and/or other eye-related issues.
This evolution is labelled as a scientific mystery to date, with many theories trying to explain what caused it, but ultimately, we have yet to find a solid and satisfactory conclusion as to what caused these odd traits.
One final note to take stock of - elves are born with these fey flecks already formed, but half-elves and so-on may be born with them missing at first only for them to form as they age.
Typically, this starts to happen when half-elves turn 7 years old, the same time that their ears start to morph into slight elven points.
Unlike with ear morphing, the development of fey flecks is completely painless, and a half-elf may not even notice their development until they look in a mirror or until someone tells them about it.

Dumb RWS Headcanons: How Do the Faces Work?
I know it's kind of silly but I really like the idea that the engines' faces are actual physical objects.
Vehicles' faceplates are in theory a single piece of metal other than the eyelids, but it changes shape and moves.
Faceplates are manufactured as "blanks" with nondescript features. The first time an engine is steamed or otherwise activated and able to move under its own power, their face warps itself into shape. Within a class there's usually some family resemblance, but no one truly knows what an engine will look like until they're fired up! Twins sometimes happen when two or more engines are built at the same time and place, but identical twins are a small minority of engines, especially steam engines! They're more common the more standardized and mass-produced a vehicle is. Maybe 10% of steam engines and 20-30% of older diesels and electrics are twins/triplets - but this number has risen as multiple units and trainsets become more common. Sometimes engines call themselves twins even if they're not identical - Tallyln and Dolgoch's faces might not be the same as their Sudrian counterparts!
The face is not the center of an engine's sentience, as evidenced by the fact that some engines get on just fine without them! Why do people bother putting faces on them, then?... Honestly it's tradition. Modern people might be more comfortable having a conversation with a machine, but steam locomotives were invented not only over a century before computer-synthesized voices but several decades before the phonograph! Victorian-era British people were not comfortable entrusting their lives to an expressionless machine capable of speech and malice unless they could make eye contact with it.
The reason engines' faces are usually pale grey is because they're made of metals like white bronze, white brass, cupronickel, or nickel silver (note: this is a copper/nickel/zinc alloy and does not contain silver). These alloys are highly corrosion-resistant. Steam engines' smokeboxes are usually painted black because black paints are cheap, IIRC at the time were the only thing heat-resistant enough, and also coal dust and soot are less obvious on it. But the movement of an engine's face will cause paint to flake off very quickly. Theoretically making an engine's face out of colored metals or polishing it to be super shiny is possible but it's not done much, at least in the anglosphere. Some diesel and electric engines have faceplates made of anodized aluminum, (which lets them be the color of the surrounding bodywork), or stainless steel
Yes, you can remove and replace an engine's face! Usually this doesn't need to be done unless they're in a severe crash: steam engines' faces are made of thick metal and are supernaturally strong and ductile, and very corrosion-resistant, and will be just about the last thing to go if an engine is left to rust. If it is replaced, usually a blank won't warp to the right shape until the engine's fired, so the one time faceplates are specially sculpted for a specific engine is with preserved engines whose boilers can't be fired any time soon.
You shouldn't put an engine's face on a different engine. It will end up looking like the engine "wearing" it is supposed to look, but it's painful and results in the face developing cracks prematurely.
Also don't mess with the face of a scrapped engine. Don't use it on another engine, don't mount it on a wall or put it in a museum, just don't. Just lay it to rest by melting it down. You don't have the luxury of "not being superstitious" with the remains of a being that demonstrably had no physical means of speaking, moving, or changing its facial expressions. Human ghosts may be scary but relatively harmless specters of mist, wind, and whispers: the ghost of a machine is a poltergeist with the same power over fire, metal, electricity, inertia, and building-leveling amounts of pressurized steam that it did in life, but no longer limited to influencing its own body. The vengeful spirit of a departed steam engine doesn't rattle doorknobs or knock vases off tables, it causes unexplained gas leaks, failed pilot lights, broken chains or cables or hydraulic jacks, glitched carbon monoxide detectors, and water heaters or boilers that won't shut off and the emergency relief valves inexplicably jam.
Usually faces for non-powered rolling stock are made of carved wood or are painted on. Putting metal faces on them is mostly a Sodor thing, and possibly the GWR.
I'm not sure what engines' eyes are made of... maybe glass, or maybe they're hollow metal spheres? Either way the pupil is actually transparent and the inside surface of the eye is black. Faceless vehicles can see without eyes moderately well, but ones built with faces aren't used to it and can't see at all or very little if their eyes are covered or removed. Some engines' eyes light up (if an IRL engine's headlight is on the front of the smokebox, it probably has glowing eyes).
There isn't any mechanical device that moves an engine's eyes, but they do have physical support. They're kind of like a trackball computer mouse. They need to be lubricated and kept clean, and there is a real system for this. Some engines use condensed steam (usually coming from the source of steam for other accessories) or other water-based liquid for tears, but some might use mineral oil?
By the way these eyes can be big! Some of the largest American engines have eyeballs well over 2 feet in diameter!
Yes, the face swings open to access the smokebox/grille. The face itself may be on the smokebox door or be in front of it and on a separate hinge. The catch for the faceplate hinge is typically on the side of the smokebox. And then there are the Cab-Forwards and Garratts.
