my observation so far is that people enjoying freefall can be split into two camps: pop/rnb fans whose fave tracks are dreamer and deep down, and rock/indie fans whose fave tracks are growing pain and skipping stones. pretty cool how people of different tastes are responding to the album

Red carpet outfit | makeup | nails | hair
᧔o᧓ the flashing lights were blinding and the photographers yelling out the members names was nothing new to the group. They kept their smiles on and continued posing until the MC came to ask questions.
᧔o᧓ “Joohyung-ssi how does it feel to finally perform one of your songs with a few of your members?” The MC asked. “I’m so excited! I always wanted to do this. I hope moa are just as excited and please cheer loudly for us.” Joohyung got embarrassed towards the end making everyone chuckle.
᧔o᧓ the MC made them each turn and say something nice to another. Beomgyu looked at Joohyung and even before saying anything the photographers went crazy with snapping pictures of the couple. With the sudden action made both of laugh. Beomgyu cleared his throat before speaking, “Joohyung is the definition of a perfect idol that our group is very proud of.” It was short and sweet which made Joohyung beam at him.
᧔o᧓ Joohyung turned to Yeonjun “um…” Joohyung was getting embarrassed again. “Y-you practice so hard and I admire you a lot for how hard working you are…um yeah.”
“Noona what was that?” Yeonjun laughed while hugging a flustered Joohyung. “I’m sorry, I was put on the spot.” Joohyung covered her face with her hands. “It’s ok noona.” Yeonjun rubbed her back comforting her.
᧔o᧓ Joohyung did go viral from her abs being more defined along with her elegant looks throughout the night. With her pearly white hair color Joohyung was called ice queen all over social media.
Gotta Go outfit | makeup | hair
᧔o᧓ the second those stage lights turned on the whole venue filled with screams. The trio just had a chic aura to them with this performance. Joohyung combined the original feminine dance moves with a masculine touch to them to suit Yeonjun and Beomgyu better in the company opinion. Joohyung would still dance to the original choreo towards the end of the main chorus.
᧔o᧓ Yeonjun and Joohyung got to share the high note with each other which moas erupted with cheer. Soon after the high note Joohyung got on the floor to so you iconic leg move. This performance was definitely the talk of the night and probably the most anticipated one.
The main performance outfit | makeup | hair
᧔o᧓ during ‘CTF’ the camera zoomed in on Joohyung during her part and she gave a flirty wink causing moas to scream. During the performance Joohyung felt her hair get caught on the gems on her jean jacket, so when it was time to take them off for ‘Tinnitus’ the jacket took some of Joohyung’s hair out of her braid. She held in her whimper from the pain and continued on performing.
᧔o᧓ many people praised Joohyung for doing hard choreo in heels, singing live while dancing, and for her amazing facial expressions.

᧔o᧓ “I miss the memo today.” Joohyung laughed, as she looked at her pink set and the all the members dark fits. The video then cut to the members looking at Joohyung’s abs, “I’m jealous of noona.” Kai pointed at Joohyung’s stomach. “You should come with us to the gym then.” Joohyung teased Kai. “I’m lazy~”
᧔o᧓ Soobin made Joohyung practice with him for his stage with Arin from Oh My Girl. He kept on smiling and laughing at Joohyung straight face while doing such a lively dance. “Noona you have to act cute!” Soobin whined, as he kept on dancing. “Fine.” Joohyung switch to being cute making Soobin burst out laughing.
᧔o᧓ the video shows the new trio practicing for ‘Gotta Go’. “Joohyung how about we do this-” Yeonjun shows what he thinks looks better in the dance. “Let’s try it.” The three continue practicing. Joohyung even practices her singing while dancing causing moas to go crazy on twitter with all the clips of her raw vocals.
᧔o᧓ Joohyung came to support Yeonjun as he was going to film his VCR intro. “It’s looks so good.” Joohyung watched Yeonjun through the tv. Once Yeonjun came back out of breath Joohyung immediately gave him a water bottle and hugged him, “you did so good junie-ah~”
᧔o᧓ it was now Soobin’s turn to perform his duo stage and just before leaving Joohyung stopped him to fixed his hair and outfit one last time. “There, you’re perfect.” She smiled up at him. “Thank you noona.” He just wanted to squeeze her with how endearing she was being.
᧔o᧓ “woah, woah, noona you look so chic!” Taehyun big boba eyes stare at Joohyung’s whole look. “Thanks, I really love it.” Joohyung looked into the mirror while fixing little things about her stage outfit. “Want me to take photos for you?” Yeonjun asked, already getting his phone ready. Joohyung gasped, “will you?” Yeonjun hummed ‘yes’ and already started pointing the camera towards Joohyung. They spent a good 10 minutes takes pictures, some solos pics then duo, and finally many trio ones. Just before leaving to the stage Joohyung started warming up her vocals and singing her parts. “I have to make sure my voice is in good condition before going.” Joohyung did feel a bit of pressure to perform the best she can, especially with this anticipated stage.
᧔o᧓ Joohyung came back to the waiting room squealing with happiness. “We were so good! I couldn’t even hear because of the cheers.” Everyone clapped and explained how good it looked. “I heard it through my ear-ins.” Beomgyu told the camera.
᧔o᧓ the group got a little break before their main group performance since they only had to perform short versions of their individual stages because they pre recorded the day prior. Joohyung mainly just fell asleep on the couch while Taehyun and Yeonjun did mini workouts.
᧔o᧓ the camera showed Soobin watching the ‘Gotta Go’ performance. “Woah they did a good job. Noona look so pretty with her makeup.” He chuckled while fixing his ear-ins and headset mic.
᧔o᧓ finally the members were done with all their performances and the cameraman showed them walking back into their waiting room. “Look there’s a chuck of my hair stuck.” Joohyung showed the camera her white hair strands clinging into the jewels of the jacket. “Did it hurt?” Yeonjun gasped at the sight. “It did! I had to hold in the pain.” Joohyung threw the jacket onto a makeup chair. “I had to suck in the tear that was coming out because of how hard I pulled it.” Joohyung cried, as she threw herself in the couch.
᧔o᧓ “I think moas will enjoy all of our performances from today and we really enjoy performing all of our songs.” Joohyung did a mini clap, as she spoke. “Everyone did an amazing job today. Well done!” The members clapped before saying ‘fighting!’

Halo Reloaded - Spartan-II Training Schedule
I've wanted to flesh this out for while, but here we go. Note: this seems impossible... it's because it is.
General Information:
From Monday through Friday (except Wednesday), they start every morning with stretching, then they do 50 jumping jacks; after a quick breather, they do the following routine below.
100 total squats, push-ups, chin-ups, crunches and sit-ups. 50 of these every morning after the jumping jacks, then they do another 50 before bed.
Go to class, listen to a lecture on tactics used by the Spartans of Greece and the Roman Empire. This goes from 1000 to 1200 (Lunch Break), from 1300 to 1500 is recess at the obstacle-course where parkour and acrobatics are to be practiced, then class resumes from 1600 to 1800.
Night-Routine, then bed.
Monday:
After a one hour break from the morning routine, they go on a one kilometer run with small sand-bags tied to every Spartan-cadet's ankles. (A work-out routine inspired by Rocky Marciano.)
They practice swimming for an hour from 1900 to 2000 shortly after class.
Tuesday:
After a one hour break from the morning routine, they step into a VR-simulator that trains them to eject from drop-pods.
At 1900 to 2000, they spar with each other; two per circle (every pair gets an individual circle). The art is a martial-art native only to the Spartans called "Spartan-Kata"; it's heavily influenced by four martial-arts: Krav Maga, Collegiate Wrestling, Judo and Kali. One is armed with tonfas and is on the offensive, the other is unarmed and on the defensive; the unarmed opponent gets a turn to be on the offense while the armed opponent learns to be defensive. They switch offensive/defensive positions at 30 minutes into the sparring session.
Wednesday:
Break on both the morning and evenings. It's just lessons for the entire day. They don't even do the morning/night routines, they just wake up, recover, go to class and return to bed.
Thursday:
In the morning, they play a game of CTF in the Zero-Grav Chamber using laser-guns that respond to their Zero-Grav Suits' sensors. (It's just Ender's Game.)
In the evening, they learn to disassemble, clean and reassemble their guns (don't worry, they're not loaded) for the first 30 minutes; in the last 30 minutes, they go to the targeting range to practice their aim. From ages 8 - 11, they use laser-guns (similar ones seen in the Zero-Grav Chamer); they are taught fire-arm safety and how to properly use guns, then from ages 12 - 16, they're taught to practice with real-gunloaded with live-rounds.
Friday:
They do their usual morning and night routine, though they go to class for the first half of the day; after lunch, they don't go to recess. For the rest of the day onward, they do a group "survival-activity" that they must complete before the day is over. If any Spartan fails to complete the exercise and return to the training-facility, ONI personnel will personally collect them and return them back to base with the usual penalty for failure/coming-in-last being no dinner.
Saturday:
Rest & Recovery Day. No class or training, obstacle-course is always open.
Sunday:
Rest & Recovery Day. No class or training, obstacle-course is always open.
Meal-Time:
Breakfast: Lots of organic-eggs (either scrambled or over-easy, depends on what the cadet wants) and scalloped potatoes, a slice of ham with a side of plain-crackers. Drinks are a glass of water.
Lunch: Fried-Chicken and fish with brown rice and a side of mashed-potatoes slathered in gravy. Drinks are orange-juice.
Dinner: Turkey slathered with gravy and ice-cream covered in hot-fudge syrup. Drinks are a glass of milk.
Class-Snacks: Plain-Crackers with a glass of milk and a side of Vitamin-Gummy packs.
Additional Information:
Every night, the Spartans sleep to white-noise.
After getting themselves in bed, they are first treated with story-time as they fall asleep; Deja, the AI that teaches the Spartans in Halsey's absence, reads them stories from ancient Greece, namely the stories from Classical Mythology, but sometimes real events thay transpired then, too. Deja swaps over to white-noise once everyone has fallen asleep.
All of this was done from ages 8 to 16. In John's case, due to him being the youngest by two years, 6 to 14.

Waiting for Connection 2 / Ghost x Soap NerdAU
Ghost is retired and plays milsim videogame. Soap is still in the force and sometimes plays that same videogame...
Previous chapter | AO3
It’s Thursday. Or maybe Friday. Possibly Wednesday. Ghost sometimes loses track of time and day. Since he’s not working anymore, the world has lost part of the human-imposed order. Time is only important if he has an appointment with his therapist or needs to go grocery shopping.
So, it’s evening, some day. Ghost touches the power button on his rig, a work of art, that is. He’s spent so much time and an unreasonable amount of money on it, but it’s been worth it. It doesn’t look like much, or rather, it doesn’t look like much to an average person, but to Ghost, it’s more art than what posh folks got in Tate, down in London.
Simon was lost after his retirement. Utterly, completely lost. He’s never had so much free time on his hands in his life. And so little purpose. On the last day, when they gave him his papers and thanked him for the service, he found several pamphlets in the folder. Support groups advertised by a bunch of people smiling, places of employment for vets, and a list of vetted therapists.
Simon didn’t use anything he found in the folder, mainly because he decided to go back to Manchester. Thankfully, he’s saved quite a sum, enough to afford him a small flat and anything he could buy within a reasonable margin, like a good therapist. Simon always thought he was not stupid, so when he started to spiral towards depression, he had enough sense in him to seek help.
The doc has suggested a hobby. Well, that was easier said than done. He couldn’t well buy a top-class sniper rifle and use it in the middle of bloody Britain. However, he did rediscover his inkling for electronics. Once he dipped his toes into the PC building and modding scene, it all utterly consumed him.
Then he got the cat, or, more accurately, the cat got him. Pretty much waited by his front doors and meowed its way into his life. Don’t let anyone tell you cats are solitary and low maintenance. Or pets. The one he’s been housing for a second year now has been a proper menace.
So, he’s got a hobby and a pet. He settled down. A barista in the café at the corner knew him by name. The bartender in the nearest decent pub as well. He went from local to regular. And his Manc accent returned, thicker than ever.
Still, he woke up in the middle of the night, heart beating – a dangerous thing with his acquired heart condition, breath short, sweat trickling down his back. In his dreams, he was chased and shot at; he was waiting or killing. And the worst, most fucked up part of it was that he missed it. If they came to him, asking him to go back for that fabled “one last gig”, he would, and he would thank them for it.
That’s when the therapist suggested video games, warning him not to overdo it because, well, overdoing things has been Simon’s thing his whole life. It’s fine, Simon tells himself. It’s not like he’s playing ten hours a day, or neglecting himself. If he’s sometimes a little too intense and serious? Well, let him have it.
Simon clicks on the “play” button, reaching for his headset, wondering what set of teenage wannabe soldiers he’s going to play with tonight. The server quickly provides him with five other people. They say hello to each other. One of them sounds a bit older than the rest. Deeper voice, with a Scottish accent to it. Interesting. Soon, Ghost connects the voice to a handle. CallMeSoap… alright.
“Everyone fine with the CTF mission?” Ghost asks since he’s the party leader. He hears mostly agreement in the noise of responses, so he chooses the mission and launches it.

I dont know much about pjo, never got past book one but I distinctly remember the capture the flag bit
anyway, how do u think each of the newsies would behave in CtF?
Capture the flag is honestly extremely iconic of rick. Forget the Roman war games; let a bunch of teenagers beat the snot out of each other for a flag
In the books, it seems the two teams are always Athena vs Ares, which makes sense since they're the two war gods. Hermes and Apollo seem to always go with Athena, while Aphrodite always with Ares. Idk if there are other cabins that always go with one side over another, but I'm gonna trrrryyyyy to keep it in that line
Team Athena: Davey makes the plan, while Sarah looks it over to catch anything he missed or overthought. Katherine is expected to take charge with the party actually going after the flag, because she's a daughter of Zeus. She goes along with it for a while because That's What's Expected, but after her first quest she's like "yeah fuck that" and becomes Davey's new strategy partner. Race hides the flag; there have been weeks where he forgets where it is, and Buttons has to make a new one. Jack and Crutchie are guards; Jack makes people feel dazed and exhausted, while Crutchie sits in a tree shooting people with his slingshot.
Meanwhile, Hotshot tries to go brawn over brains. He draws out what his scouts say the Athena camp layout is and tries to use brute force to scatter their forces while another subsection of the group goes after the flag. Mush guards the flag because he's got charmspeak and convinces people that actually, they wanna go grab some hot chocolate, like, who wants to stomp around the gross woods looking for a stupid piece of fabric?
And the others, who I don't know where to put
Les - Not Allowed To Play. Race and Crutchie keep trying to sneak him in, but Davey eventually gets them to stop. When asked what he said, Race and Crutchie just get far-away looks in their eyes and say "You don't want to know"
Spot - like I said in my other post, people fight for him to be on their team. He's so tired of it. Half the time he just sits out. Will only play if sufficiently bribed (although it does seem like he's on Athena's side more often 🤔🤔🤔 interesting 🤔🤔🤔)
Blink - similar to Spot, but he's less like the sure-fire win Spot is looked at as and more like a little luck boost. He honestly doesn't care about the game, he just likes watching Mush make everyone trip over themselves
Romeo - uses the Mist to make people lose their way or think they're hearing things. He is not allowed to play with Mush; they are a dangerous combination and know it
Albert - the long suffering head medic who just goes crazy, goes stupid during capture the flag. A not-insignificant number of people in the infirmary after the game are there because of Albert.
Finch - plays both sides, nobody knows whose team he's on on any given day. Makes booby traps and uses the games as an excuse to test new weapons
Stray - similar to Romeo in that she tries to confuse people as to where they are, but physically changes the trees/foliage
Elmer - also not allowed to play because he's A Literal Child, but he manages to convince them to let him play every so often. Y'know that "i'm just a little guy" tiktok audio? He's just A Little Guy and has KILLER puppy dog eyes and makes people feel bad when they try to get around him/get the flag from him

Note
Most sources on the internet will delineate “1. genital differences which are intersex” and “2. genital differences which aren’t intersex.” My question is if there is such a thing as category 2? For instance, female or CTF can be born with a hooded clitoris, where the clitoral hood entirely covers the clitoris and can only be “corrected” with surgery. That said, it is never corrected at birth (it’s usually not visible, first of all) and is always seen as elective. Even so, would this be intersex by the fact it is a difference in how the genitalia usually forms? Where does the line get drawn?
Hi anon! This kind of goes back to a question I answered earlier tonight, and really gets into a discussion about what the definition of intersex is. I'm pasting my definition of intersex from that post, which references this glossary from InterAct:
An innate physical trait that falls under the umbrella of variations in sex characteristics, generally meaning that the variation:
Shows up in a person’s chromosomes, genitals, gonads or other internal reproductive organs, or how their body produces or responds to hormones;
Differs from what society or medicine considers to be “typical” or “standard” for the development, appearance, or function of female bodies or male bodies;
and is present from birth or develops spontaneously later in life
Is often significant or noticeable enough to cause stigma or violence in a person’s life, whether through explicit discrimination or implicit ways that society enforces the sex binary
So I think when we're curious about what variations are and aren't considered intersex, a lot of the time it comes back to how society interprets and responds to those variations. Having a hooded clitoris is an innate physical trait, that shows up in someone's genitalia, that is probably present from birth/puberty. Where it becomes less clear is whether that's considered "atypical" from typical female and male bodies in a way that causes stigma associated with existing outside the sex binary. My perspective is that it probably doesn't, as it's something that is societally considered within the typical range of experiences for "female" genitalia. It's a genital difference, but I don't really think it's a genital difference that exists outside the sex binary, and it doesn't carry with it the specific experiences of stigma and compulsory dyadism.
I think it can be important to recognize that being intersex isn't the only way to have bodily variation, but is rather an intentional, political term to create a community around a set of traits, diagnoses, and variations that face the heaviest repercussions of the sex binary. Intersex is also not a specific scientific term that has strict criteria based in biological mechanisms. There are plenty of disabilities associated with the reproductive system that are not considered intersex, because even though people might experience societal oppression due to their disability, they aren't experiencing the added layer of how our society reacts to bodies outside the sex binary.
Where the line gets drawn is a question that is constantly evolving and is going to be different depending on who you ask. The medical community has a very strict definition of who they consider intersex, while intersex community organizations take a broader approach and include groups that the medical community refuses to label as intersex. The definition of intersex has meant different things in different time periods. There is not one right answer. On this blog, I usually take the stance that if people need resources or support for their bodily variation that they find in intersex community, I'm happy for them to access those resources and support. I'm not super interested in making strict definitions about intersex, and I'm more interested in finding shared values, building solidarity among our experiences of dealing with intersexism and compulsory dyadism, and building intersex love and pride.
I'm only one intersex person and cannot speak for the whole community, so other intersex people please feel free to add on with how you think about intersex identity.

Vietnam war

Vietnam war by Linh Yoshimura Via Flickr: Air to air view of F-4H Phantom of VF-21. USS Midway (CVA-41) in foreground during Task Force 77 operations. US National Archives photo. Notice: During the Vietnam War, twelve different commanders led CARDIV FIVE and CTF 77 in numerous combat deployments to the Vietnam War zone. Beginning in 1964, COMCARDIV FIVE was permanently deployed to the Western Pacific and dual-hatted CTF 70/CTF 77, homeported at Naval Air Station Cubi Point in the Philippines. During the Vietnam War, Task Force 77 conducted carrier strike operations from the Gulf of Tonkin and South China Sea for nine years, from 1964 to 1973. Twenty-one of the Navy's 23 operational carriers made at least one cruise with the Task Force and served over 9,100 days on the line. The nickname "Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club" came to be associated with US carrier operations off Vietnam. Rolling Thunder air strikes, armed reconnaissance, and photo reconnaissance missions were conducted against selected targets and lines of communication (LOC) in North Vietnam, while operational procedures were developed by the operating units, 7th Air Force and Carrier Task Force 77, that permitted the full range of coordination for all air operations in the Rolling Thunder program. As the U.S. Navy entered heavy combat in Southeast Asia between 1965 and 1968, a chain of command evolved which reflected the complex character of the war. In theory, Commander in Chief, Pacific was the commander of all American forces in Asia, including those assigned to Commander, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (COMUSMACV). The U.S. Pacific Fleet was the naval component of the Pacific Command and as such directed the Navy's activities in that ocean. Subordinate to Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CINCPACFLT) was Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet, who conducted those naval operations in Southeast Asia primarily external to South Vietnam. The fleet's Attack Carrier Striking Force (Task Force 77) mounted from the South China Sea the aerial interdiction campaign in Laos and North Vietnam, while Seventh Fleet's cruiser and destroyer units hunted the enemy's logistic craft along the North Vietnamese coast, bombarded targets ashore, and provided naval gunfire support to allied forces in South Vietnam. From the South China Sea, the Seventh Fleet's Attack Carrier Strike Force mounted the Rolling Thunder bombing and Blue Tree tactical reconnaissance operations in North Vietnam; the Barrel Roll, Steel Tiger, and Tiger Hound bombing and Yankee Team reconnaissance efforts in Laos; and the ground support mission in South Vietnam. Except during the period in 1965 and 1966, when the aircraft carrier supporting operations in the South sailed at Dixie Station, the carrier task force was deployed at Yankee Station (after April 1966 at 17°30'N 108°30'E). Generally, before August 1966, two or three carriers operated in Task Force 77, and after that date the number was often three or four. During the Easter Offensive 1972 Five and Six carriers operated in Task Force 77. On each ship, a carrier air wing controlled 70 to 100 aircraft, usually grouped in two fighter and three attack squadrons, a reconnaissance attack squadron, an airborne early warning squadron, and smaller detachments. However, the number depended on the size and class of the carriers, which varied from the large-deck 65,000-ton Forrestal class and 70,000 Kitty Hawk class and Enterprise-class ships, to the modified 27,000-ton, World War II vintage Essex-class ships

Even after she got nicer I'm still not big on Wildernessa. Instead of making her Craig's love interest, they should've done a storyline with her and Cheesesticks feuding with Brigid's weird dog cult. Also think Brigid + Freddites would've been great in the CTF arc if they'd previously written her better - would've been amazing to see her command the group of unsocialized dog kids to start killing

Up-Close & Personal is a signal contribution to understanding that drawn-out conflict from a soldier's point of view, informed by knowledge gained from being "up-close" at the basic, ground-pounding or river-patrolling combat level. The author pulls no punches. Detail is uncompromising, hard, often excruciating. All this amid the tumult of politicized youth on the home front shouting "Make love not War" and "Tune in drop out.
Review:  I tend not to give 5 stars to books, as I like to reserve that for books that have a profound effect on me. This book qualifies and let me explain why. It's not a perfect book by any means. There are little errors here and there with spelling and such, plus the story isn't that captivating/page turning thrilling. It can even be a slog at times. So why 5 stars? Because Bogison does what few others can - he really conveys the emotional aspect of his thoughts, his feelings, his mental state, his wrestling with what to do, how to do it, what is right and what is wrong... in big decisions and small. He doesn't just tell the good, but also the bad, he explains the stuff he wrestles with and not everything gets wrapped up nice and clean and with a little bow. When I grabbed this book, I was expecting a story about a Military Police in Vietnam. I was expecting a lot of bar fights, investigations of murder and accidents, regular law enforcement stuff. By the title, I also expected discussion of the Chieu Hoi Program/Force 66 - Luc Luong 66. - Let me be clear, this book has 0 of that... none.. nada... zip zilch... NO. Instead it's a book about an MP who is assigned to correctional facilities in the US (Ft. Riley) and Vietnam (LBJ) and ends up in a very special unit of MP's that is called an Ambush and Recon unit made up of MP's instead of infantryman! Because of the location in the Delta, they also have a joint unit with PBR's and skimmers that he finds himself leading as well. It was fascinating to read, the people, the stories, the bureaucracy, and more was captivating and it left me really thinking about the choices he made and how his personality affected his life's course. His temperament is always to attack, to challenge, to push - even against those who are trying to help him. He either sits quietly or attacks ferociously even when confronted with cooler heads to learn from and imitate - he does neither. Whether it was the helicopter crash, the tug boat incident, or a handful of other stories included, one can't help but really feel what the author felt as he just did his best, and all too often memoirs like this one are more about snippets of stories, or tell you what happened but forget the human element. This one has a consistent narrative and does well to really put you in his boots, and look through his eyes.

Rivka Abrams was not surprised when the fire alarms went off. Nor was she surprised when the explosion rocked the Praxis Laboratory three seconds later, having already braced herself against the wall. No doors blew open, no glass shattered. A quick mental scan of the lab’s inhabitants revealed two dozen panicked and evacuating employees.
The health and well being of each were subsequently confirmed using the internal security cameras, accessed through the AR implant in her artificial left eye.
That was a disappointment. The lives of a few lab coats were more than a fair trade for the advantage such a tragedy would provide her argument in both the public media and in the Praxis boardroom. That had been the whole point of steering security away while she puppeteered the saboteurs inside.
Trust a bunch of tech phobic hippies to fuck up making a bomb. Rivka would have to satisfy herself with whatever dollar amount of damage they had done. The bottom line was the only thing that mattered to the board anyway. Damage assessment would wait. It was time to make an exit.
Rivka never walked anywhere when she could saunter there instead. The clack of heel against tile. The sway of hips. It was a complete artifice but an enjoyable one. Calm. Collected. A true leader arrives exactly where they mean to, exactly when they intend to arrive there.
A man and a woman in egg blue scrubs staggered out the stairwell and into the hallway, arms over their mouths, coughing furiously. Rivka pursed her mouth into a worried frown even as she buried her irritation. She knew for a fact the smoke wasn’t that bad on the second floor yet. “Gladys, Howard. Good to see you’re okay.”
“Mrs. Abrams?” Howard’s eyes widened. One didn’t need to be a mind reader to see the confusion and fear etched into his face. “What’s going on?”
“There’s been a small incident in Lab 3. We should evacuate into the parking lot.” Rivka explained, her voice steady. With an invisible hand, she sifted through both of their thoughts, tamping down their base responses.
Panicked people were stupid and unpredictable. Even more so than normal. Seeing Gladys and Howard relax in her presence, Rivka urged them along behind her with a finger.
In the parking lot, a scattering of lab coats and pretend-security milled around like lost children, watching the smoke coming out of the third floor windows of the complex. Worried gossip and cries of relief at each new person to congregate at the evacuation site.
There was the wail of a fire engine approaching in the distance, followed by police sirens. Perhaps the Montgomery chapter of the CTF would pay a visit. Now there would be a group worth getting a hook into.
With no sign of them yet, and the police yet to arrive, Rivka turned her attention to rounding up her charges. A side effect, it had turned out, of prolonged control was a lack of initiative. People got accustomed to having a little voice in their head telling them what to do. Whether they realized it was happening or not.
Who said every experiment the lab ran had to be on the books? Sometimes you had to treat yourself.
Still, it made for annoyances like this. One legal charge was enough. She wasn’t interested in adopting twenty-two grown adults. Shoving her hand into the air, Rivka shouted over the noise. “Everyone assemble and check-in here!”
With that nudge, the chief of building security was finally stirred into action, training taking over. Sometimes you had to kick an engine to get it to engage. Rivka stood back, satisfied to let Minako do her job of shepherding the group together.
Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four…
Not one to trust a public-school washout, Rivka did her own headcount, touching lightly on each mind in turn. Her own personal tracking chip, only answerable to her. It amused her to think of it like tagging the ear of a cow at a farm. Or a rat in test facility. Perhaps that was more appropriate. At the end of the day, they all had about the same level of freedom, didn’t they?
Once the police arrived, the time for private amusements had ended. Put away, drawer shut. Rivka was to look suitably disturbed. Upset even. Worried for her team, and for their experiments. The consummate scientist.
Never mind that she had made a point to back-up all test data off-site before the attack. In the moment, she wasn’t to be in a state of mind to recall such facts. Let someone else helpfully ‘alleviate’ her worry.
One tedious conversation with the head of security and emergency response services after another. Always so painfully slow, to have to pretend like she didn’t already know exactly what they were going to say before they said it. It’s not like the telepathy was a secret. But no one liked to be reminded that the inside of their head was no longer private.
Firefighters got to work, EMTs attended to the few scrapes and bruises the staff had sustained. Rivka was called back over to confirm, yet again, with the police officer in charge there were no missing persons still in the building.
Yes, yes. Everyone accounted for. Rivka waved a hand, not bothering to mask her annoyance. She could feel all twenty-three employees clustered around. Stop bothering her with this.
Wait.
Twenty-three?
Minako and the police officer stared at her, as Rivka stopped mid-sentence. She cast her mind back out, checking each mental tag. Taking inventory. Olivia, Helen, Andy, Lee, Rodrigo, Howard, Gladys…
Where was the lab-rat? The other telepath?
Where was twenty-four?
