I think that the Supernatural fandom doesn't give Dean Winchester enough credit or hold John Winchester accountable nearly enough. I would argue that John's abuse (mental, emotional and physical) and its constant effect in both boys lives is constantly downplayed by a majority of the fanbase.

The parentification of an elder sibling has been proven to cause lasting issues and we see this throughout the show; when Dean is overly protective of Sam, treats Sam's life as more valuable than his own, can't picture a life where he's not needed, and his dismissal of Sam as a valuable contributor in an equal partnership. Dean is often criticized both in canon and by fans for being overbearing and codependent on Sam. This is a direct result of John Winchester's inability to parent.

Dean's emotional repression is shown to be caused by his father's militant behaviors and approach to parenting. Dean doesn't see his feelings as valid or important and thus turns to repression or unhealthy coping mechanisms as illustrated throughout the show. His alcoholism, violent outbursts, and unhealthy relationship with sex are all coping mechanisms he uses not to feel.

Through flashbacks (and some dialog) the viewer is show that Sam is more resentful towards John than Dean, and that he even holds resentment towards Dean for being the "perfect little soldier".

That's part of the reason Castiel is such a great foil for Dean, both are loyal to absent fathers' but while Dean was born with free will he follows his father's orders unwaveringly until sometime after his death, Cass a being created without free will breaks free of the command of his father and from his father's mission, becoming for all intents and purposes a Prodigal son like Sam.

Dean's adherence to his father's word is, much like Sam's rebellion a response to continued and repeated abuse, neither brother is perfect. And their father was the furthest thing from it.

“No,” Castiel disagreed coming around the table leashing his hand around Dean’s wrist and practically dragging him to Dean’s bedroom. He shut the door and turned to face a stunned-into-silence-Dean. “No, Dean,” he moved into his personal space and began unbuttoning his shirt. “You…” he kissed the cut on Dean’s lip and a flutter of grace warmed Dean’s lip, healing the injury.

Dean swallowed at the innocent kiss and heal, eyes remained on his best friend.

“..did not deserve it,” the Angel kissed the cut next to Dean’s left eyebrow, warmth flooding and soothing the now once split skin. “You did what you…,” Castiel proceeded to kiss Dean’s left bruised cheek applying soothing warmth into his Hunter’s skin and muscle healing the injury he made on contact, all the while continuing to unbutton Dean’s shirt. “…thought was right at the time, Dean,” he removed the ice pack from Dean’s hand, threw it behind him blindly, and placed another healing kiss on the bruise at the left corner of his lip.

Dean nearly came out of his daze until he felt Castiel’s barely-there-kiss upon his lips and the warmth lingered, tingling on his skin, as emotions overwhelmed the righteous man.

“You acted with the knowledge available,” he kissed the bruised jaw, washing away with healing grace from his warm lips. The Angel pushed the open shirt off his shoulders and pulled Dean’s undershirt above his head.

The hunter easily allowed the removal, remaining in silence, heart racing and hoping for another kiss, healing or not.

Castiel’s piercing blue eyes skimmed Dean’s bare, bruised chest. His brow furrowed at the damage he caused. “Dean,” he whispered, leaned forwar, and placed another healing kiss on this beautiful soul’s collarbone, lingering a moment longer than before. He looked up through his own dark eyelashes at Dean’s brilliant, green eyes brimming with tears that watched his every movement. “Being wrong does not mean punishment, Beloved,” Castiel placed another warm and healing kiss next to his right nipple, lingering again. His grace lingered a moment more as well before he moved to lay a kiss upon a dark, large bruise on his right lower abdomen.

He straightened back out facing the man before him and continued, “It means, my love, learning to do better next time.” He took Dean’s jaw in both his hands, closed his eyes, and placed a gentle kiss upon Dean’s lips.

Dean forgot how to breathe. He felt sweat forming on his scalp, his heart pounding in his chest, his blood roared on his ears, and Castiel’s lips against his. Tears flowed without permission down his cheeks. His body finally at his command: he grabbed the Angel’s shoulders and brought him closer, touched chest to knees, and he tilted his head changing the chaste kiss into a heartfelt one.

About an hour has passed since I finished the show. My anger is bubbling. Here goes.

Dean. Deserved. Better.

You’re telling me that after everything that’s the way he goes out? Because see, I don’t have a problem with him dying. I have a problem with the “how” and the “why” because in this cause the “how” is so fucking stupid and the “why” is nonexistent.

After all those speeches where Sam said Dean would live, that he deserved to live and have a family and a life beyond the shit one they were handed, that’s how he goes out?

After all the insane shit they’ve gone through and pulled themselves out of, he just says “tell me it’s okay”?

After he got a fucking dog, something Dean has always wanted, and it felt like a glimpse of the life he could have?

I just know that this is a fucking joke.

If Dean had to die, it should’ve been in the biggest fight of his life. But guess what? He won that fight. He deserved his prize. His peace. His chance to drive off into the sunset with his brother or alone but he deserved that. Not in Heaven after his death. On Earth.

I don’t know man. I thought that Sam and Dean would, at the very least, get a few decades together to just be brothers and live life and die face to face, smiles on their faces with “Bitch” and “Jerk” coming out of their mouths.

Anyway.

Dean Winchester. Sam Winchester. Jensen Ackles. Jared Padalecki. Thank you for everything.

Remember how Mary said something angels are always watching over you?? Well look haha Castiel is obviously named after the angel born on Thursday. Dean’s bday is on a Wednesday… so in other words Castiel is one day after Dean sure but from that moment on he guards Dean. I love too how Dean hated angels even if his mom said they are always there and cut to he fell in love with one (and one fell in love with him too) … Idk I’m half asleep and should sleep it’s 6 am but haha. They are always on my mind and miss them. Just sad they queer baited us but just maybe we will see them again 🥺🥺🤷.

If you ship them too let’s be friends and rant and talk about them cuz I miss them. and rp. If you don’t sail away on your ship and leave our ship alone.

It rubs me so the wrong way when tiktok Dean stans make “uwu boyfriend” edits of dean using exclusively season 1 footage. Like idk if it’s a matter of the creator being 19 and feeling like thirsting over someone younger is better or what but it gives serious “I like dean when he was sassy and not broken” when I think the fundamental interest of Dean’s character is that he’s broken and it really shines in later seasons. Also, Jensen is literally just as hot or hotter in later seasons… bent over backwards for John Winchester and hiding his pain is not the Dean I’d romanticize
