I always think the question with MSR isn’t so much who fell first or fell harder—mainly because I personally think it was pretty simultaneous / parallel—but rather who became self-aware about their feelings first.

In my take on this ship, they may well have gone years without fully admitting to themselves how they felt, or fully addressing the feelings head on. They were so distracted by the work and the Truth and the heady emotional power of Partnership and Trust. It was just really possible for them to stay in denial, these two characters in particular.

I tend to think Mulder faced the music first—that he was the first to accept the feelings weren’t platonic. Maybe I think that because he’s the believer, or he’s a doomed Romantic in a big R sense. I could see this realization coming as early as Scully’s abduction, but it could have been as late as Never Again or the cancer arc, too.

But I think @randomfoggytiger might argue it was Scully who understood her feelings first and waited for him to get his act together. I can be convinced of this, too, especially in fanfic. In The End, Scully has to have some awareness when she is stewing over Diana in that car. That could be her first realization, although it could have been earlier, too.

I listened to the XF Diaries podcast’s recent interview with Frank Spotnitz, and he talked about how he viewed Mulder and Scully in season 6 and the FTF near-kiss. He said they didn’t talk about it because they both thought it was something they shouldn’t have been doing. He said the show couldn’t spell it out for the audience because the characters didn’t have their own feelings figured out.

I thought that was striking, thinking about how all the way as late as season 6 the 1013 writers imagined them in this state of not fully realized feelings. I do get frustrated with this kind of talk because it seems so disembodied and unrealistic. I mean, six years, and they haven’t thought seriously about this?

But … also I admit to kind of liking this really repressed version of MSR. This version of MSR that just can’t get its shit together to admit what is happening. In other words, they aren’t exactly pining. They are more just in massive mutual denial. Fingers in ear, nah, nah, nah, I can’t hear you, no feelings here. That does make dialogue in season 6 episodes like Rain King and HTGSC and Milagro seem especially tense and loaded and fun.

And I do like fanfic that depicts them being forced to come out of denial; it’s much rarer than fanfic with one or both of them consciously pining. I mean, please. Do not mistake me. I like the pining fanfic very much, too, and I write it more. It’s just interesting to think about.

Sunlit Gotham Universe Notes

Batfam Notes:

- Due to moving around the batfam timeline a bit, Jason is the only one who has died who has been fully buried and then revived (Steph’s heart stopped for about three minutes when Black Mask captured her, and Damian has not been killed.)

- Damian came to Gotham earlier than canon, and is currently 10 years old and in 4th grade at Gotham Academy

- Jon Kent is also going to be the same age as Damian in this AU

- Jason Todd is going be announced as Legally Alive before the beginning of the story (Yes, he is still Red Hood, but he doesn’t kill anymore (most of the time))

- Bruce will NOT be going missing in time

- This means that Tim never drops out of high school, gets emancipated, and becomes CEO of a company at the age of 17. It also means that Dick will not have been Batman

- Selina and Bruce are dating - he’s gonna probably propose soon, but big life events keep happening (like adopting new children every few months) so he hasn’t yet. He claims he’s waiting for a time when everything is calm. His children call bullshit and say he’s just scared she’ll say no

- Selina totally knows that he already has the ring and is honestly just teasing him and stressing him out more by making comments and jokes every so often

How does Wonder Woman not know about the demigods?

- When the Greek Amazons went to live on Themyscira they became cut off from the rest of the mortal world. This means that they weren’t aware of Camp moving around to follow Olympus

- Diana was born WAY before the First Great Prophecy, and technically isn’t a true demigod because she was sculpted from clay - therefore not really part mortal

- By the time Diana had left the island, demigods had gone underground and general society forgot that they existed. Both camps are kept secret so that the demigods are safe, so Diana hasn’t heard about them and assumes that the demigods are just no more

- Due to the Mist, Off World League Missions, Rescue Ops, and the fact that she lived in Paris for a while, Diana hasn’t been around during any of the major battles - or her focus was elsewhere

- Donna Troy might show up at some point, and the same logic about leaving Themyscira works for her too. We’re going with the Magical Duplicate origin story for her, so again, doesn’t quite count as mortal enough for the prophecy

- Cassie Sandsmark originally used magical artifacts to help Diana fight crime and was later ret-conned into being either a daughter of Zeus or a granddaughter of Zeus. The ret-con is going to be brought up in the story and we can all thank the Flashes for messing up the timeline. But basically she doesn’t become a proper descendant of Zeus until after the Titan War and therefore the prophecy doesn’t apply to her either

Children of Apollo have the following abilities According to the Riordan Wiki:

- They can curse others to only speak in rhyming couplets that can take days or even weeks to wear off (depending on strength and number of people in the spell)

- They are expert archers, inherited from their father. However, the children of Apollo who are healers tend to be less skilled with this (as seen with Will Solace)

- They also excel at anything involving throwing or shooting stuff, like shooting hoops or shooting firearms or other missile weapons 

- They are skilled in physical contests and games

- They excel in the arts

- They are skilled musicians

- Vitakinesis: As the children of Apollo, they are natural healers. They can heal people by singing a hymn to their father (in Ancient Greek).

- Audiokinesis: As the children of Apollo, they have the ability to control sound waves and music

- It is extremely rare that a child of Apollo can possess complete photokinesis, as only Apollo himself and the Titan of Light, Hyperion, and the Titan of the Sun, Helios, have been known to use the ability

- From what can be gleaned from The Demigod Diaries, it can be presumed that some, or even all of Apollo's children possess a limited form of precognition

- Thanks to a curse, all the children of Apollo have a terrible fear of snakes

In this AU, souls have auras that are unique to each soul. Demigod children with parent’s who deal with light (ex: Apollo or Iris) can see the auras if they focus really hard. Children of Apollo will often use it as a way to check how well a patient is healing as the brighter the aura the healthier the person.

Since I recently passed a follower milestone, I figured it was time to give this unwieldy space a table of contents.

My name is Blake, 20s, librarian in training, fiction writer, and hopeful novelist. This is a side blog (because I was a bad planner a year and a half ago), so I’ll follow back from @ichariancarrion.

Harry and Meghan Netflix special.

Episode 1 Notes:

1. From the outset we are told this is a first hand account, using footage from their own archives. And members of BRF have declined to comment.

2. For some ridiculous reason, first scene is at an airport arrivals lounge. Private jet Harry's documentary starts with scenes from a commercial airport. Lol. Appary he has just landed at London in March 2020. Probably traumatic because this was the first time they had to take commercial lol

3. It's quite evident that this started as a video diary (Meghan's idea?) around March 2020. Way before they finalized the netft deal. So ...this is how they pitched to platforms? This is the behind the scenes look? Scheming bastards.

4. They are addressing all the little criticism - private jets. How little she knew of Harry. Media scrutiny. Archie. How she gave up everything to marry him and then he voluntarigave up his life to join her world.

5. There is a LOT of footage of the kids. Basicat it's their iPhone gallery made into a movie with piano music.

6. She and her friends really overexplai. That she was single "SINGLE" for a couple of months in summer 2016. And travelly the world with her girlfriends. And that those trips were planned to enjoy the world. Girl doth protest a bit too much.

7. Oh btw they met on Instagram. Lol new twist. And she got to know his through his ig feed. Lol. He is photographer ok guys. And he asked to meet her. So not a blind date.

8. They also show their private chats. URghhhh!

9. Harry is such a doofus. All he wanted was to get married and that's a bit creepy ok. It comes across as if he would have married anyone.

10. Nacho is there. URghhhh

11. Meghan didn't know him guys, at all. Did not know anyone. But told all her friends. Hahaha... And they are all here telling us she didn't know. Hahaha... And well... it would all be cute but it's them. So Diana is mentioned a few times. We get to know about their first meeting. And then it cuts to commentary from the day Harry was born, and how special Diana was and how everyone loved baby Harry. Sneaky!

12. We see a lot of footage of innocent diana talking about Harry and Harry doing cute stuff. Just in case we forget. Harry says he doesn't have early memories of his mom. But, dear viewers, we do, right? So that's more important. We all loved Diana.

13. Everybody who has ever spoken/written anything favorable about the couple is in this series. Noone who could present the other side. It seems a bit glaring.

14. So much royal footage. So much of the queen. If she was alive she definitely would have been offended at this. I'm sure. This is disrespectful. Because it makes it seem like "Meghan against the institution". Instead of Harry and Meghan the lovestruck couple.

This is the undertone that I think Meghan may have wanted to distance herself from.

15. When Harry talks about his childhood it does make a but of sense, esp with the skiing footage and Eug and Bea look overwhelmed.

16. He says what she shared in panorama was her experience and truth. Even if it was obtained in the wrong way.

17. Harry is such a simp. Meghan tries to be, but personally she seems like she is overacting even in their old home videos and facetimes. How is that possible?? And Harry says she is so simar to his mum. ewww... the mommy issues!

18. Lol there really are Diana's pictures on the wall in a tiara in the nursery. Didn't Harry hace any private pictures of her he can show his children because this was literally from a magazine photoshoot. WTH!

19. When he talks about his mum's death, they show a photo of the two brothers. With William looking at Harry, and Harry staring into space. That's heartbreak. Truly. The only time I wished the brothers were still close. What would Will think if he sees this??

20. This episode does a good job at presenting Harry's childhood issues. And his fears. He seems self aware. And you empathise with him up to that point. But then I wonder, with all of this, how could Meghan make this whole thing about herself?? His problems are real and massive and he had so much support. And she and him, they make this all about her not being able to adjust and how unfair it was for her to leave everything behind (for all of 1.5 yrs lol).

21. I think, this maybe one of the reasons that Meghan hasn't liked this series. We get to know the Harry that we liked and loved and thought we knew. It makes her feel.like a nobody. And he overcompensates ofr that constay. But the showrunners, director, Netflix won't overcompensate. They tell us who us the more valuable one.

22. Harry is White Knight-ing in Africa. You know, the wayward, heartbroken lad who just wants some warmth and acceptance... It's a bit much, this narrative. esp in these times. This impression of Africa the land of authenticity and finding yourself, even if true, is something we should all avoid now.

23. Harry's issues are so obviously here, I believe if Meghan hadn't come along he might have stayed on the straight and narrow. She didn't value and respect his heritage. And he mirrored her to be able to keep her. (My opinion from this episode)

24. Whenever Lindsay Roth speaks, I feel like she is auditioning for the best friend's role in a Hallmark movie. Whenever nacho comes on screen I want to scream, he is a skeez.

25. They show Harry's tiny makesft tent. To quell the glamping rumours.

26. Abigail Spencer and her bad extensions. Uffff!

27. There's some friend of hers called silver tree. Lol what? Who is this woman? I bet she is a stand in for Gina Nelthorp Cowne. Poor Gina, was ghosted but would have loved to do these interviews.

28. They are saying that initially it was much easier for her to come to London and stay at KP with him. And then they would drive to Windsor and walk around frogmore and have all this space and privacy without anyone ever noticing. So much privacy in london. Hmm.... The exact life they left behind. Weird (not!)

29. It's all bad media, intrusive media.

30. Pictures of the Halloween party, the night before the news of the relationship broke. Eugene's costume, yikes! Also, did they take permission from her to use these photos because she is a literal princess. The palace would and should protect her. (IMO)

31. Harry says, after the news broke, he didn't know what he was walking into. Lol poor dude never thought Meghan would be thriving on getting papped every where. She really did milk this opportunity and was probably acting all innocent in front of him. Because his concern seems genuine, her shock less so.

32. Some of the news headlines, articles, voiceovers they show here are not from this period. They are from.much later, before the wedding. Not from 2016 i remember back then everyone loved her. And she got a lot of positive press, esp in the UK.

Fall resonates differently to everyone. The following songs/albums are my personal favorites for this time of the year.

First, we have what I call the 70s/80s haze (some kind of retro music). Best listened to at night, these songs make me kind of nostalgic, even thought I haven’t lived during that period.

These are the best. I have this thing where I always associate seasons or periods of my life with cities, like autumn is for New York, winter is for Paris, Spring is for somewhere in Scandinavia and summer is for Bermuda or Greece. These are always changing for me, not something constant. It all depends on my mood. Sheila E. La E sta per Escovado. Nasce a Oakland, California, da un matrimonio misto tra una nera e un messicano. Dirla così potrebbe suggerire un quadro da suburbio squallido e vittima dello sprezzo razziale WASP. Non correte subito a rifugiarvi nelle solite immagini sociali. Suo padre non è un fattorino qualsiasi che cerca di mantenere la conigliata. Pete Escovado è un percussionista di fama internazionale. Già da ragazzo entra nel giro che conta, affastellando esperienze lavorative invidiabili, come quella assieme a Marvin Gaye.

Ma il vero fenomeno in famiglia è la piccola Sheila E. Ma ditemi se un talento in boccio non rigogli in un contesto simile. Suo zio Alejandro è un rispettato cantautore. Un altro zio, Javier, è il fondatore di una cult band punk rock californiana nota come The Zeros. I suo padrino è un certo Tito Puente… basta a dare un’idea?

DALLA CULLA AL PALCO

In una culla di stimoli come questa il talento eccezionale di Sheila E. non può che venir fuori come un portento sismico, no? E così non si stenta a credere che a 15 anni faccia già quello che fa ora ma pagata milioni. E visto il carnet di appuntamenti con la storia del pop-rock che ha già depennato. Roba da far impallidire i maschietti se proprio non possiamo evitare di metterla sul piano sessuale.

La sua prima esperienza ufficiale in uno studio di registrazione è nel 1976, quando ha appena diciannove anni, assieme al bassista jazz Alphonso Johnson (Santana). Ma in poco tempo il percorso già battuto da papà Pete, Sheila E. lo ripercorre pari pari e così veloce da lasciare una scia di fuoco alle calcagna.

UN PICCOLO PRINCIPE PER SHEILA E.

A vent’anni ha già suonato con George Duke, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross e Herbie Hancock… Questo prima di esibirsi davanti a un certo ragazzetto bruttino ma affascinante che si fa chiamare Prince.

Lei ha una tale padronanza ritmica da intimidire turnisti che vantano oltre 30 anni d’esperienza. Per quello scugnizzo del funk è amore al primo beat.

La prima volta che si incontrano, nel 1978 Prince assiste a uno spettacolo di Sheila E. assieme al padre. Lui dopo lo show si fa avanti nervoso e imbarazzato. Le rivela che per tutta la sua esibizione ha litigato a oltranza con il suo bassista su chi dei due la porterà all’altare.

Lei ride, arrossisce ma non è tempo di matrimonio. Ha molti progetti, collaborazioni da paura, una carriera solista, tanto per dire, non può mica convolare a nozze. Il Principe Roger Nelson, giura che se non riuscirà a sposarla, di sicuro farà qualsiasi cosa per averla nella sua band. – Seguo la tua carriera da anni. So chi sei e ti vorrei con me.

Sheila E. stenta a crederlo ma prende nota e trascorre quasi più di un lustro di intensa attività concertistica e da turnista. Intreccia sempre più il proprio cammino a quello del principino. Batti oggi, batti domani, inizia un vero e proprio intruglio sentimental-artistico molto fertile e stimolante.

BATTERIA O MICROFONO?

Lui è premuroso, incoraggiante, convincente. Sembra avere una visione precisa e molto ambiziosa riguardo lei (insieme a letto?). Per via del suo talento, no? E si offre di spingerla (ehm…) un po’ nell’incipit della sua carriera come singer.

È quello che vuole, Sheila E.? Diventare come Diana Ross? Il problema di Sheila E. infatti è di non sapersi decidere tra la batteria e il microfono. Dopo tanta dedizione al primo strumento, negli iridescenti anni 80 decide di tentare con il secondo.

Prince approva e le regala una hit, The Glamourous Life, che inizialmente doveva essere incisa da Vanity. Chi è Vanity? Ma l’ex-compagna di lui e futura dalia nera delle scorribande di Nikki Sixx. Il bassista dei Crue le racconta nel libro The Heroin Diaries.

Il brano che da anche il titolo al primo album solista di Sheila E. si piazza in cima alle charts di dance music. Il connubio con Prince si perpetra nel tour di Purple Rain, dove lei apre i concerti. I due consumano una relazione infuocata ma inizialmente clandestina. Lui ufficialmente esce ancora con la corista ed ennesima figlioccia artistica Susanna Melvoin.

SHEILA E. DOPO IL SUCCESSO UN ALTRO SUCCESSO

Dopo il successo di The Glamorous Life, Sheila E. sempre assistita da Prince, incide Romance 1600. Il nuovo singolo vincente vanta sempre lo zampino del reuccio: A Love Bizarre.

Il brano porta l’album a nuovi traguardi di vendite rivelandosi il picco commerciale di Sheila E. da solista. Da qui però inizia ufficialmente il suo periodo discografico come batterista. Nello specifico e in esclusiva assoluta di Prince.

In realtà Sheila E. è già presente in Parade, ottavo disco del singer. Solo nei brani Life Can Be So Nice e Venus de Milo, però.

A partire da Sign O The Time (1985) sarà lei a occuparsi del cuore ritmico della musica del suo mentore e amante. A chi le addebita un’influenza creativa “princiana” lei ribatte che è stato lui a lasciarsi contaminare da lei.

Andatela un po’ a contraddire! In realtà si può affermare che quei due siano un buon esempio della correlazione tra equazione di Dirac e Amore. Due sistemi che si influenzano vicendevolmente danno una svolta alle rispettive carriere, l’uno grazie all’altro.

DOPO SIGN O THE TIME

Dopo Sign O The Time, Sheila resta al suo posto anche in Lovesexy. Il disco consacra Prince come una delle star di successo più controverse della storia del pop. Nel mentre lei non dimentica il suo terzo disco da solista. E sebbene il singolo Koo Koo dell’omonimo album Sheila E. ottiene discreti risultati, si sente che le cose non vanno proprio al massimo.

Presto Sheila E. deve fare una scelta: riconoscere di non essere lei la nuova Whitney Houston e lasciar perdere la voce. O provarci sul serio.

Mossa letale: una volta lontana dall’aletta protettrice del suo “Petit Prince” i successivi lavori solisti di Sheila E. ottengono attenzioni più moderate dalla stampa e dal pubblico. Fino a ridursi, come singer, a un lumicino in balia del borioso vento dell’indifferenza.

Nonostante la collaborazione con Prince sia ufficialmente finita, Sheila E. seguita a scrivere musica con lui e a non raccogliere i meriti che le spetterebbero.

ANNI 90

Negli anni 90, messa un po’ da parte la carriera di cantante, Sheila E. riprende a darsi da fare come batterista. Dal 1995 collabora con un sacco di bella gente: Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, Beyoncé e l’artista nipponica Namie Amuro.

Poi Jazz a tutto spiano; rock pop con Billy Cobham e Ringo Starr, ballabili con Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie. E ancora Jennifer Lopez, Hans Zimmer e quel pezzo di sgombro di Kanye West.

Meglio nota come la batterista di Prince che per tutto il bagaglione curriculare o gli album solitari, Sheila E. ha mostrato di valere soprattutto con i piatti più che le stoviglie. La sua è una tecnica di classe finissima supportata da un potere straordinario nel dar feeling alle costruzioni ritmiche di tutti i generi.

Purtroppo ha pagato il suo esser donna, e non lo si dice per retorica femminista. Lei si è vista mettere in secondo piano accanto a Prince. E anche dopo ha sofferto il confronto con un ambiente professionale esclusivamente maschio, guadagnando attenzione per la sua presenza scenica e soprattutto la sua sensualità.

Una batterista donna è un concetto che spiazza il pubblico. Questo Prince l’ha sempre saputo. Può aver solo pensato: se è lei la tipa giusta, al diavolo cosa pensa il mondo, la prendo anche se è donna.

Ma il bricconcello sulfureo, autore di decine di brani altamente sexy. Pezzi scabrosi che hanno spinto la figlia di Al Gore alla masturbatio compulsiva nella sua stanzetta. Lui ha sempre pensato doppio sulle mosse da fare in carriera.
