The Fairytale Keeper's Final Assessment - Roger (Part 2)

This is the 1st anniversary event and is in his POV.

As usual, can’t guarantee 100% accuracy on this

Roger: You need a beer after working up a good sweat. Here, cheers.

Kate: A tavern…always a tavern…

Roger: What’s up, not in the mood to drink?

Kate: Now, I was feeling thirsty and I like this tavern because it’s comfy. However…I’d like more of…Nevermind.

Owner: Yo, Kate. You’re letting this guy lead you around again? You never learn, do you?

The owner held out a small dish to Kate.

Owner: I want you to try some of this dried fruit. Roger’s the type to say salting the meat will make it taste good so he’s useless.

Kate: I get it. To Roger, nutrition’s all that matters.

Roger: Hm…?

Kate was laughing as she enjoyed her conversation with the owner.

(You’ve grown used to it. Both being with me and being in this type of environment)

Shortly after meeting, Kate and I had spent a whole day together.

At the time, I dared Kate to join me on a brutal mission and even shot a man down before her eyes.

Kate’s been earnest since the moment I met her and gives 100% in everything.

That way of life’s a virtue.

However, in darkness, it’s a disadvantage.

(I know that the harder and more sincere you try, the faster your life will be destroyed)

(That’s why I told Kate that day…)

(“It’s wise to keep your distance if you want to live”)

(I always thought that Kate would go back to her old life while keeping her distance)

(Even now, Kate is with me)

Kate: Roger, hey, Roger.

Roger: Hm…?! Mmm.

When I turned my head to look at her, she shoved dried fruit into my mouth.

Kate: Hehe, that’s for always bullying me.

Roger: Oh? YOu’re learning how to deal with me. Howeverー

I pinched Kate’s cheek and examined her.

Roger: I'm the kind of person who, when someone treats me badly, I want to treat them even worse. Remember that.

Kate: Got eet.

Kate rubbed her cheek and happiness returned to her voice.

Kate: Can I take you somewhere this time, Roger?

Roger: Next I was going to take you to the black market where drugs are secretly being sold.

Kate: I’ll pass on that today!

Kate: I wanted to visit a place like this at least once with you.

Roger: I don’t know if I’m supposed to feel insulted or flattered.

As I was having the coffee and lovely little pastry Kate ordered for me…

Something cold fell on my cheek.

Roger and Kate: Ah…

When I looked up, pure white snowflakes danced in the clear sky.

Kate: Snow…At this time of the year?

Roger: Diamond dust*

Kate: Diamond dust?

Roger: A few days ago, we had some out of season snow. The snow that collected on the building’s now being blown down by the wind.

Kate: Oh, how fascinating. …It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

Kate murmured as she stared at the snow falling like petals.

Kate: There’s something I once heard. That people make up to 35,000 decisions a day. If one of them had been different, we wouldn’t be seeing this today.

As Kate says, life’s made up of countless choices.

(When the day ends, I’ll reveal the fairytale keeper agreement to Kate and leave the choice to her)

(I don’t think I should be involved)

(Kate decides what she wants to do with her life)

(...But)

Kate’s gaze, which was focused on the snow, suddenly turned to me.

Kate: I’m glad I got to meet you Roger through a miraculous coincidence.

(Ah, I see)

(Not immediately giving her the choice of whether or not to continue as a fairytale keeper)

(Not telling her that the moment when we’ll have to part ways is coming)

One unconscious thought assembles into a big motive.

(I still want to be with the little lady, don't I?)

Just as the falling snow reminds me to look up at the sky, Kate’s words remind me of how I feel.

Feelings are too simple to ignore.

Roger: Pfft, haha…

Kate: Huh, what’s wrong?

Roger: It’s nothing.

Hey, Kate. There’s one more place I’d like to go.

–

Roger: Oh, so this is where you used to live.

Kate: Yes. Looks like Victor’s still paying the rent. For when I come back one day.

Kate surveyed the place in nostalgia.

She muttered something before I could show her the agreement form.

Kate: If my time as a fairytale keeper’s coming to an end, then we’ll have to part ways.

Roger: Kate, here.

Kate: A letter of agreement…to continue as a fairy tale keeper?

Kate blinked as I told her everything.

She then nodded once, as if understanding everything.

Roger: Originally, I’m the one that’s supposed to sign it. But I think the choice should be yours, Kate.

Kate: I knew that you, who told me that I should “think for myself”, would say something like that.

Roger: The choice is yours, but let me tell you how I feel first.

I closed the gap between us and examined her expression.

And then I placed a hand on her head.

Roger: Kate, I’d die of boredom without you. I’d miss you. So stay as a fairytale keeper.

Kate: Roger…

Roger: So, what are you going to do, Kate? Continue being a fairytale keeper? Or are you going to say farewell-to me.

*He says 風花 which is “snow on a clear day” but that felt weird to use in this exchange. Though I don’t know if diamond dust is the right term to use either given where the snow came from.

Nezchelit the Basics

Nezchelit (neh-shel-eet) are the third species discovered by Nijezdo, a semi-aquatic, sturdy people who get along quite well with Nijezdi.

Their planet Prilinewo (pree-lee-neh-voh) is one that is known for it's extreme tides, created by the close proximity of its 3 moons, nearly 3/4 of the planet is affected by tides. This leads almost ever single animal on their planet to be semi-aquatic in one way or another, and of course, nezchelit are no exception. Despite what you first may suspect, they are actually covered in very dense, very short fur covering most of their bodies. Leaving the only thing hairless being their fins and eyebrows, this is to keep them warm when swimming.

Their sexual dimorphism is, oddly enough, very similar to that of Humans, Fae, and Pixies. Having the men be larger, hairier, and all around physically stronger than their women. While the women are generally smaller, more agile, and "softer" looking than their men. However, the most common way of knowing if you're looking at a male or female nezchelit is to look at their tail: if the tail seems short and stocky; it's a man, if the tail is long and slender; it's a woman.

Though, most Nijezdi seem to be able to tell by face structure alone.

Now, of course is the part where I start talking about reproductive biology, so:

⚠The section under the cut talks about sexual reproduction. While it doesn't go into grueling detail, it is spoken about in a semi-scientific lens: Reader discretion is advised⚠

TLDR: Nezchelit reproduction is damn-near the same as Nijezdi (i.e. Human, Fae, and Pixie). Being monogamous, women are considered the "fairer sex", and child-rearing is a duel parent responsibility, though the mothers are considered the primary caregivers, while the fathers are considered the providers. The biggest difference (besides the obvious) is the fact that they are hyper carnivores, meaning that the vast majority of their diet is made up of meat. They also feed their liti (the common term for babies) the same way penguins do

Romance and Children

Due to how many different countries an cultures exist on Prilinewo, it is hard to pin down what is considered a normal romantic relationship. However, there are some noticeable similarities. Men are (very generally) considered attractive if they are large, strong, and have some semblance of status. The want for a husband that can provide for the wife and their children is a strong one.

On the other end, nezchelit men tend to find nurturing, emotionally loving, and gentle women the most attractive, after all, if he's out providing, he needs someone to care for their children while he's gone.

Now, of course, these are very generalized statements that don't encompass everyone. Due to the fact that nezchelit are people, there are many different ideas of what is considered attractive, both culturally and personally.

But, assuming, a man and a woman decide to have a baby, things tend to be a little more simple. Child-making is the same as a human, the male producing sperm and the female produces eggs. The egg stays in the mother for about 3 weeks (giving her time to "nest build") before it is ready to be laid.

During this time, the mother is rather aggressive, purposely finding a safe place to make a nest and lay her egg. Even her husband can be an unwanted presence during this time, but this is rather rare, and commonly temporary.

When the mother finally lays her egg, she still tends to be rather broody, only letting her husband near her. She very rarely leaves her egg's side, the only exception being to relieve herself. And even then she "force" her husband to watch over their unhatched child until she returns (it is very common for most nezchelit houses to have a "nesting room"). Due to this behavior, it is usually necessary for the father to not only have paternity leave until the baby hatches, but also be the one to provide food and water to his wife until hatch day.

Hatching and Infancy

The baby (commonly known as a liti) is born completely blind, deaf, and small enough to fit in both palms of the mother's hands, making them entirely dependent on their mother. Nezchelit have no mammary glands, so they feed their babies by, well, the bird method. The mother, and father, will regurgitate pre-chewed food from a secondary stomach specifically for feeding young. This will continue until the liti is 3 months old.

Before the age of 1 the liti already knows how to swim.

Childhood

A nezchelit is considered a child until it's around 10 years old, beginning puberty at around that time. They (normally) are very curious, and adventurous, finding anything, and everything to play with and explore.

Teenager

Most cultures tend to see a teenager as a time to truly explore, both yourself and the world. It's common for them to get jobs, or help more around the house/ranch/family business/what have you. Play time's over, time to start becoming an adult!

Adulthood

16 is considered an adult in most countries, and they are about as social as Nijezdi are (common to live alone, but still require social contact from time to time, at least). They will tend to have a job at this point, whether it be with their parents, or someone else, this is the time where independence is given, and they learn to live on their own.

How I feel about this character

The way she showed her devotion to Bill at the end of book 6? Absolutely iconic. Best written intentionally romantic moment in the whole series. Hands down. No contest. The way she handled that dragon? Immaculate. The judges were just mean and veelaphobic and also JKR is super weird about her female characters.

Also kudos to her for being the only character when Harry got picked as a Champion in book 4 to be like 'no this is ridiculous he's too young.' Yeah she was a little harsh about it maybe. But wow. One of the only responsible adults in the whole series. Child me was like 'omg she's so mean' but now I'm like 'you go girl.' She should've been there to roast all of Dumbledore's questionable decisions. Can you imagine. Dumbledore: Don't worry. I have a plan. Fleur: Eez eet child endangerment again?

I genuinely enjoy her as a character and also find the way her identity as a part human who is fetishized to some extent and viewed as Other but not demonized in the way werewolves or half giants or half trolls are in her world to be fascinating fodder for a lot of interesting character work.

Also, I always have a soft spot for characters who I feel the narrative is actively telling me to dislike. I prefer stories that let the reader come to their own conclusions. As soon as I feel the story is too forcefully and artificially shoving down my throat "you must like this character" or "you must dislike this other character,” especially when it's not justified by what we actually see in the text, then I kind of want to do the opposite. So if you think my girl Fleur did something rude no she didn't or if she did that was her emotional support rude comment and she deserved to go off.

For real though. She put up with so much hate from Molly and the whole Weasley family for literally no reason. She deserved to be a little snarky. Ginny is so mean to her for literally no reason and the narrative wants us to laugh along and cheer on this immature, unkind highschool meangirl behavior as though it's some epic #girlboss moment when it's just mean. And Fleur's parents meanwhile are absolutely lovely (probably because Fleur covered for her in-laws and didn't tell her parents how she had been treated lest her full Veela grandmother show up and start throwing fireballs at them all).

All the people I ship romantically with this character

I love her with Bill. I think Bill and Fleur are by far the best handled canon romance in the series. (Well, best handled intentionally canon romance - we all know JKR wrote a 7 book drarry epic but that was an accident lolol). They are so sweet together and so devoted to each other - despite any obstacles (including unsupportive family members). And they really compliment each other so well and just yeah. It's so sweet.

On a semi-crack level I do also like the idea of Fleur/Luna though because they both can be very blunt and directly state difficult truths in a way that can make others uncomfortable or seem rude. They do this in very different ways and also have very different outlooks but I think it makes them interestingly complimentary. And they'd both be confident and self assured enough to handle each other and not take offense. I feel like Fleur and Luna flirting would be so hilariously direct and entertaining. (Though it'd probably have to be postwar as. I think Fleur would be likely to scoff at Crumple-Horned Snorkacks).

I can also totally picture a Bill/Fleur/Luna poly relationship. I feel like it'd end up being improbably chill and functional somehow despite the big personalities. The three would probably be off living their best lives and eating metaphorical popcorn while all the other characters spent years having epic relationship drama.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I want to see her and Charlie hanging out so badly. After seeing her take on that dragon Charlie was probably pulling all kinds of shenanigans to get her together with one of his siblings because he doesn't want to get married but also oh merlin he needs this woman to be part of his family. Give me the Charlie and Fleur epic friendship and dragon taming duo.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don't think Bill was attracted to her because he likes "glamour." I think he saw her as the brave, loving, and intelligent person that she is.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wish other characters had apologized to her and stopped mocking her and treating her horribly.

it was a normal day for daichi. clear skies, and the bustling of the city even in the early morning. there was one particular group of little kids who were lead by a girl in a teacher's uniform. 

the kids were looking terrified of crossing the road, seeing the passing cars and bikes alike, as well as the noises of the bustling street. daichi chuckled lightheartedly, making gestures towards the busy road as he walked across and towards the children. 

"see, guys? the kind policeman is here to make sure we don’t get hurt while crossing the road. now, let’s hold each other’s hands before we walk forward! ready?" their teacher said as the kids did what they were told. there were hushes and whispers until a little girl reached for daichi's hand. 

he was flustered; looking at their teacher who nodded at him, smiling apologetically. daichi wrapped his much bigger hand around the little girl's, and began to cross the street.

they looked like a file of ducks crossing the street in the early morning; the bypassers cooing at the sight before them. as soon as they arrived at the other street, the kids bowed at daichi while he saluted them, red-faced, despite his smile. 

"I want to be like him someday, sensei!"

"Policemen are brave! they’re not sca[r]ed of c[r]ossing the st[r]eet!"

"Thank you, sir!!"

daichi chuckled under his breath. kids are adorable.
