Urdak, home of the Maykrs and existing outside of most time and space. It was a dimension that the Gemini had passed through several times but had never given much thought to, until now. The million years war had given them both, especially L, a grudge against the entire species. False gods, manipulators of mortal life, and they especially stank of the creator. L especially hated them for their appearance, resembling her own true self, gilded in gold and ethereal. Xibalba especially hated the imbalance of death their existence created, causing physical pain as she attempted to maintain order among the afterlives housed inside their body. It was decided that this would be handled, and L would be the one to do it.
L's form was the smallest and most visible it had ever been when passing through Urdak. Never before had they felt the planet beneath their feet, the coldness of the air, or smelled the sweet aroma of the trees. There was an ambient vibration that caused unease within her, reminding her of what this place really was.
T'Con in their true forms could only be matched in strength to another, however T'Con avatars were weak piles of atoms with limitations set forth by the immediately inhabited area. It was something the Maykr race had become aware of and immediately took advantage of when L was discovered. Had she been aware of their use of Argent Energy there might have been a different outcome.
"Just think, your creator could have made a sandwich, yet here you are." L chuckled before screaming through gritted teeth. A spike was hammered into the base of her skull, pointing upwards. With each strike her vision faded more and more, her body becoming limp until she had completely blacked out.
She lost count of how long she'd been imprisoned and tortured by now. And whoever said that one could grow accustomed to torture over time never pissed off the Khan Maykr. The spike had been removed and repaired several times now, each upgrade causing more unpleasant side effects. It caused a debilitating vibration the closer a Makyr got that was only lessened when she took on her less human form. She was more vulnerable but more comfortable in it, and only needed an opening to make use of it. It was starting to feel like it was a hopeless endeavor at this point though. Every few years she was given the option of fighting her way out, with some new form of cruel handicap. Skinless one year, hornless the next, even having three of her arms ripped off. That was the closest she'd made it so far.
L paced the floor of their cell, bare feet softly tapping against the tile. All four of her arms had regrown, two crossed below her chest and the other two held out as she spun in a circle every few steps. Pitch black obsidian antlers came out of her head that she would scrape against the walls every now and then. Shiny black oval eyes closed, a third stayed open horizontally on her forehead as she began thinking of a way out, for the umpteenth time. In frustration, she let out a scream, directed at the Makyr Angel that guarded the forcefield-protected opening to her cell.
"When I get out of here, I'm ripping you out of that armor, and I'm going to fucking eat you."

rimlaine’s gay tension was too strong so they had to be separated into two different light novels. rimlaine’s gay tension was too strong so Rimbaud had to forget all his memories of Verlaine otherwise he would have continued his “I don’t need to fix him I can love him the way he is” campaign. rimlaine’s gay tension was too strong so by the time Verlaine realized his feelings, Rimbaud had to be dead because they would have been too powerful and insufferable together.

As is my tradition, let’s start off the year with some adventure gamebooks, this time from the Fighting Fantasy line. I’m going to jump around to some I particularly enjoy, starting with FF3, The Forest of Doom (1983). I very much enjoy Iain McCaig’s cover art — autumnal tones and lizard folk, what’s not to love? The interiors are by Malcolm Barter. After devouring so many Russ Nicholson-illustrated FF’s, Barter’s line work seems jarringly clean, but I like it and he actually employs a variety of stylistic choices that are grittier than they seem at first blush.
I probably enjoy this one more than it deserves. It is constructed on a loop, which is nice, because you get lots of chances to not succeed at your quest (which is rather dull — find the hammer, return the hammer) and try again, but subsequent trips don’t account for the things you’ve already done (like the monsters you’ve killed, for instance). I don’t really see a good way of fixing that problem, either, at least not without ballooning the page count. There are also a ton of items to get and use, but none of them are particularly exciting. And it might be a me-problem, but I can’t seem to find a genuinely optimal path through the book; there is always some need to retread. I don’t love that.
Still, it’s a literal walk in the woods, which is a delight after the first two volumes taking place underground and inside. I love the atmosphere of it, and the number of weirdos who are hanging out in what is seemingly not that large a forest. Not the most earth-shattering FF, but not the worst by a good measure.

like look i know im a dsmpolo but it is genuinely really interesting to me to see people talk abt the dsmp like, "oh it wasnt meant to be that srs and mc roleplay just isnt that deep and" like no, it was? dsmp was lighthearted in a lot of ways, yeah, but it definitely had its more hard-hitting moments? it wasn't just written to be haha funny meaningless jokes all the way through? dsmp is a sum of all its parts, the fooling around and the scripted story and the improv roleplay and the carefully-constructed-months-in-advance plot beats. like dsmp was absolutely a very special server with a very special story that was, yes, minecraft roleplay and full of stupid silly moments and dick jokes but ALSO was absolutely meant to hit on some heavy topics and dark themes! like theres no need to give the fandom this much credit, lol, they didn't just hallucinate a story from a bunch of minecraft lets play content--they managed to hallucinate a self-contradictory, much worse story from the existing story that was literally right in their face for the sake of their personal biases and projection and then got mad at the dream smp for staying true to the story it was actually trying to tell instead of acting like a lesser conduit of the fans' wishes and sacrificing a cohesive plot for popularity points and views. like, don't get me wrong, the dsmp is far from perfect, there are parts of the story that i enjoy far more than others, and it definitely has its own flaws and weaknesses. but god damn if it's not still a story that affected a HECK of a lot of people (even if people might be desperate to act like they dgaf nowadays) while being, yes, a minecraft roleplay server

When I answer a scientific ask with a long and precise answer, with graphics and explanations, the quality of a scientific publication, it gets ignored.
When I answer an ask about Taylor Swift and just answer it with a single word, people love it and go haywire.
The world is in shambles. Humanity is lost. Science is scorned, while some pop star is admired. Who desires knowledge, when you can have brain-numbing entertainment?

I get you on the watcher stuff. dooooooo you happen to have any stray thoughts on desert duo at all ?
in hindsight it's kind of hysterical that they had such an impact as a tragic doomed yuri couple considering that their actual canon relationship was more like an it's always sunny episode about divorce

The Cavern of Doom (1983) is the third Zork pick-your-path book. Most of the basic features are the same: two kids, a boy and a girl, explore the Great Underground Empire in a fairly linear quest suitable for young readers. It plays fast — you can probably solve it in about 30 minutes, it has one optimal path (I think), about 15 ways to die surprisingly grisly deaths and one trap for cheaters. Plot-wise, we’re exploring the titular cavern in hopes of finding the elves Max and Fred. As they are missing, so is a good deal of humor that was found in the previous book.
This one makes up for that lack by being the most like a Zork videogame in structure. You need to collect objects to solve challenges and you pick your way through a dungeoncrawl that, for the first time in the series, actually feels like the GUE to me. There are lots of grue. We even get to see what they look like, thanks to Dell Harris’ illustrations. I’m not sure how I feel about that broadly, but I do appreciate how toothy they are (I also have a hard time believing this Dell Harris is the same as the last book’s Dell Harris, to the point that I am wondering if it is a pen name). Phil Parks delivers a cover that is less awesome than the last volume’s but, I think, suits the book, and the larger Zork universe, quite nicely.
If you’re gonna get one Zork pick-your-path that isn’t tied to nostalgia for the cover, this is probably it.

I haven't told anyone on tumblr about this but outside of the roleplay shitposts there is an entire roleplay story we're doing. I'll say it right here it is so stupid yet cool and everyone involved including me is fully invested in it. (Take these out of context images. Also the roleplay is called The Pure Heart Precursor's.)
