VAMPIREKIN TIPS

Hey fellow vamps! Here is a list of tips that give me euphoria but absolutely feel free to modify these to your liking. Vampires can have any style and vibe so remember to do what feels right for you!

Eat foods with blood in them or rare beef! Blood sausage and blood pudding, to name a few! Here’s a wiki for more options: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_as_food

Drink red drinks: energy drinks, hibiscus tea, pomegranate juice, cranberry juice, etc

Enjoy the feeling of biting into ripe fruit - so easy, very satisfying… I feel like it’s alike to fangs on skin

Wear black cloaks / clothes / gothic wear / gothic lolita fashion / etc etc

Keep a journal all about your vampirekin. Decorate it and such! I use this as a bullet journal and it’s mainly in use at night.

Music! Make some vampiric playlists for yourself. I recommend classical and organ music

Look after your skin! “Vampire skin”

Get and light some red candles, black candles or, even better, bleeding candles. Bleeding candles can be found on Etsy or Amazon!

Exploring decades of history and researching about historical accounts of vampires

Play A Thousand Year Old Vampire! An amazing tabletop journaling solo DnD game where you play as a vampire and write a journal for them. I can’t explain to you how euphoric this is… just amazing.

Vampire DnD in general is euphoric to me (putting this here incase folks can’t afford the precious game!) Look on https://itch.io for free solo DnD and other indie games!

Read vampire stories, watch vampire movies!

Wear fake fangs and get some fake blood for comfort <3

Create a Pinterest board based on your vampirekin

Decorate your room with gothic items! Interior design goes a long way - for example, I keep a few Halloween decorations up that are bat and vampire related!

If you’re spiritual, get vampire / gothic tarot decks!

Painting with acrylics- paint done pomegranates, I don’t know why, very euphoric.

Buy a coffin made to be a bed! Of course, if that isn’t available to you then make your bed coffin-esc. You can do this with getting gothic bed sheets, arranging some cute bat plushies, having a veil over your bed etc… which reminds me-

Buy bat plushies!

Go out safely at night and gaze at the moon when she’s out. Appreciate the silence and beauty of the night.

If you are able to do so, pull an all nighter. Please don’t do this if you have responsibilities the next day, are chronically disabled (aka you can’t stay up all night for your own health), etc.

Get your nails done! Coffin shaped or nice and pointy! Look on Pinterest for some design inspo

Try out some vampiric makeup, get creative!

Research the different kinds of vampires!

Research the differences and overlap between IRL Vampire/Modern Vampire and Vampirekin

Take gothic photos with vampiric vibes. Filters, editing, soft light and outfits can help

Find community! Vampirekin spaces online and tags can really help feel like you are a part of a collective community and less alone

RED LEDS! Very useful for me and very comforting - I have bat shaped LEDs

Go on Victorian house tours or explore Victorian-like houses! Gothic houses are very pretty from the outside but the inside is even more astonishing! If you can’t go in person, watch a YouTube video!

If you’re a vamp who isn’t keen on sunlight, stay in the shade, get sunglasses, get a gothic sun umbrella and wear sunscreen!

Create picrews of your vampirekin self

Enjoy cathedrals, cemeteries and graveyards at dusk/night. Just enjoy the liminal energy and calming space.

Go to abandoned churches!

Get athames/ritual knifes. I’m a practitioner so I use it in my ritual work but honestly you can get it for the vibes!

Write love letters to yourself, vampires are confident - self love 2023 <3

Get lovely silver candle holders

Gift yourself a dried flower bouquet <3 Dried roses look and smell amazing!

Get red bath bombs! Bathe in a soothing red bath 🫶🏾

Get chew stim toys if you have biting stims or urges

If you have a garden, get night blooming flowers! A lovely lil nocturnal garden

If you have bats around then watch them at night! We only have a few where I live but it’s a delight to see them fly about.

This week's spotlight is on Beth Fuller and her comic Witching Hour. Beth is an illustrator and concept artist from Dublin, Ireland. She’s considering putting down the stylus pen and heading off into the wilderness to live as a hermit, but likes hot showers and horror films just enough to keep her in civilisation. For now, anyway. "Witching Hour is about a young girl sent on a mysterious journey by her father. Two pale trees with intertwined branches form a strange gate at the edge of 12-year-old Esio’s town, and beyond it lies an old, ruined land. Over their pints, as dusk falls, the villagers say it’s where lost things - and people - eventually end up. She’s got sandwiches, an apple, plasters, a bottle of Tipperary Kidz water and a Horrible Histories book in her rucksack and she’s heading off into the unknown, with only a talisman to guide her. There’s no telling who she might meet along the way."

"That’s the initial rundown, anyway. Speaking more subjectively, I wanted to create a setting where two totally different characters - as different from each other as you can get - are forced to work together and end up changing each other’s lives. I really do think you can get on and find common ground with almost anyone, in the right circumstances."

Witching Hour took several years to incubate. "I’d been working on a comic slowly and haltingly since I was 18. There are pages kept deep, deep in my computer with old, badly drawn versions of Esio in a radically different setting, but it never really made sense as a story. I don’t think I made it past page three! Still, the fantasy atmosphere and character of Esio stuck with me over the years. Plus I really like to mix the dull, routine and mundane aspects of everyday life with things that are otherworldly and strange."

"Eventually we had a visual narrative module as part of my degree, and while recalling my old comic pages (I was mulling over it in the shower, which is where I think many of us do our most important thinking) an idea came to me that would form the basis of Witching Hour. Adding this to the embers of my previous project gave me more than enough fuel to sit down and start drawing.

"I have plenty of ideas for what I want to get up to next. I’ll work on a tarot set, keep working on freelance concept art and illustrations, design some tattoos, maybe try my hand at another comic at some stage. As always, feel free to get in touch and let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see from me!"

Beth draws inspiration from many sources: "The landscapes of south-west Ireland. Horror films, foreign language films, fantasy films, anything animated. The writing of Michelle Paver, Neil Gaiman and Ursula LeGuin.

"For me, though, it’s primarily the work of other illustrators that has inspired me the most, and it’s often only through seeing and evaluating lots of different brilliant styles that you can start to discern your own tastes. As a child, the obligatory Ghibli film catalogue. Then the work of Chris Riddell, Max Prentis and Ian McQue were enough inspiration to foster an interest in art school. I went, studied Illustration at DJCAD, and discovered Jake Wyatt, Celia Lowenthal, Juliette Brocal, Linnea Sterte, Jack T. Cole, Evan Cagle, Alphonse Mucha and (of course) Moebius. Seeing their work is like taking the creative spark and making it into a deodorant flamethrower."

Beth's work often centres around fantastical worlds and sweeping landscapes. "I think somehow you always come back to what you know. Sometimes you don’t even notice you have a fascination with something until you start to create and it keeps returning.

"My family and I spent a lot of time around Irish coastlines growing up, especially during the warmer months. Kerry, in the south-west, has mountains that turn brown in winter, then when summer comes are carpeted with a haze of purple heather, not unlike the hills of Scotland. There are crumbling ringforts and monastic ruins on isolated hilltops. I could be in the most beautiful place in the world but still miss the coconut scent of Kerry gorse. The fantasy aspect is fun to play with, and it adds a nice sense of mystery, but fundamentally I think the landscapes I draw are an attempt to capture, and return to, the shores I kicked about on as a kid."

For aspiring comic creators, Beth has this advice: "This is a common one, but I think it’s still worth saying: if you have a story, get it down. You don’t need to consider yourself a comic artist to make a comic. You also don’t need to wait around for the right time, or enough expertise - nobody is going to give you a nametag with ‘comic artist’ on it. If you can draw, and you need to say something, just start drawing boxes and see where it goes. Also, ‘Necropolis’ by Jake Wyatt is really good."

I was lucky enough to get a few slots of @needapotion’s last batch of commissions, and one of the pieces I commissioned was this lovely Dragon Age Tarot-style commission of Rhiki, set post-Heavensward. I’m in love with the result, so I wanted to share it here!  Every part of it is stunning; the colors, her expression, the many many details, and the symbolism woven throughout. I’m endlessly impressed and delighted by it! More details I wanted to gush about under the cut.

Z’rhiki was very close to Haurchefant, and his death hit her hard, so much so that once the immediate aftermath had been handled she genuinely considered leaving the Scions. It was a pivotal experience for her as a character and I have a of feelings about it. Its’s represented really beautifully in this piece. One of the foremost feelings Rhiki associates with Haurchefant is the warm air from the fire hitting her cold face whenever she opened the door to the main hall of Camp Dragonhead, thus the fire in the foreground of the piece, with the sensation it evokes in the background. Set against a snowy Coerthan night, the light reflecting off the illusory cloak creates a dusk- or dawn-like colorscape; endings and new beginnings. When I was making Rhiki from scratch in the character-creator, knowing nothing about the game, I wasn’t really drawn to either the Keeper of the Moon or Seeker of the Sun lore, so I decided to try to make a character that looked like the spaces in between day and night, light and dark, so the color scheme of this piece is not only representative of this period of her life, but also the broad strokes of her character (which have turned out to be very fitting later in the game...) //

Spirit-

Because spirit is not tangible, its correspondences differ from those of the physical components. Planets, tools, and other objects may be associated with it by various systems, although these associations are significantly less standardised than those of the other four elements. The element of spirit has various names. The most popular are spirit, ether or aether, and quintessence, which is Latin for "fifth element."

There is no universal symbol for spirit, however circles are prevalent. Eight-spoked wheels and spirals are also used to symbolise spirit. Spirit connects the physical and spiritual realms. In cosmological conceptions, the spirit is the intermediary substance between the physical and heavenly realms. Within the microcosm, the spirit serves as the link between the body and the soul.

Invoke your god or goddess. This can be accomplished by looking into their correspondences and making sacrifices or burning suitable incense, for example. If you discover a chant you enjoy, you may utilise it as well, or focus on this god, welcoming the message they wish to convey to you.

Practice divination! This is one of the most effective techniques to connect with the spiritual dimension. It allows you to bypass your conscious mind, which sometimes prevents us from receiving subconscious instructions. Whether you use tarot, a pendulum, or runes, calling on spirit or a specific god can help you connect with this element while performing divination.

Keep a dream notebook. We frequently receive messages in our sleep that we quickly forget unless we write them down. When we sleep, our conscious mind is not functioning, leaving us more receptive to receiving messages from Spirit. To interpret the dreams, become familiar with common symbolism and interpret them instinctively.

Draw, paint, or colour a mandala. This is a style of meditation derived from the Buddhist and Hindu practices of Tantra. Mandalas became popular in the New Age movement after Carl Jung presented them as a tool to examine the subconscious, and they can now be found almost anywhere, including adult colouring books.

"Mother what exactly did you buy?" Alastor asked, as he took her items out of her bag. It was later now, almost dusk.

" Just some of the necessities." She said, before Alastor frowned upon seeing the bowls.

"Again mother?" He asked, before Helen frowned.

"Alastor I cant keep up like this. You know I must do this." Helen pleaded, before Alastor took them in, looking over its details. They were wooden, in the bottom of the inside of the bowl was a hand.

"Mother, you need to stop. He isn't coming back." Alastor said, before Helen grew quiet. Alastor frowned, knowing that his mother was hurting.

" I know.." She said, before Alastor walked around the dining room, leaving to the kitchen.

" I'll make you tea." He said as he left. Helen sat in silence, staring around the room. In the middle was a large dining table. On the walls were paintings Alastor had sent her during his time in New York. She smiled upon the memories. Then, a bag caught her eye. The thank you bag.

Helen reached forward and opened the bag, dumping the contents into her lap. She sorted through them one by one. Healing supplies, twine, a book, a small candle, and a card. It was black, with white writing etched into it. It had the address of the store, with Y/n's name on it. It was a tarot card. Turning it over, Helen saw the five of cups staring back at her. She gasped, throwing the card away from her before standing from her seat, letting everything fall to the floor.

"Mother are you alright?" Alastor asked rushing in. She looked panicked. Alastor stared before Helen looked to the card. Alastor picked it up before he stared at her.

"What is it? This is good." Alastor said, before Helen's eyes widened.

"Good? The five of cups? Good?" Helen asked, before Alastor stared confused.

"Mother it isn't five it's seven." Alastor said showing her the card. But it wasn't. Not to her.

" Put it down. We're burning it." She said, before he frowned. She was shaken, he didn't like this.

" Mother your tea is almost down. Sit down, relax, and dont scare yourself." Alastor said to Helen, before she nodded. What kind of power did this woman have? She wasn't from around here, and making a move to open a store like that in a town like this? She was crazy, but not stupid. The last time someone had tried to do something like this they had gone out of business thanks to all the protesters and white men in the area. Just then, Alastor had came back into the dining room holding a steaming cup of tea. Helen could only stare at the card as Alastor placed the cup down in front of her.

"Should I go back?" Helen asked, before Alastor frowned, not liking the effect this had on her.

"I'm not sure." Alastor said, as Helen lifted the cup to her lips, taking a sip. " If you think it will help, then I suppose you could go back." Alastor said, standing as he picked the card up. " I think this is for a reading." He said, as he tapped the card. Helen nodded taking in his words, processing them.

" Did you feel it?" Helen asked, before Alastor nodded.

" Yes I did. It might be too much for you, but she seems a little light to me." Alastor said with a grin. Helen stood silent, knowing her son could handle more than she could now. 

" Why don't I go?" Alastor asked, before Helen snapped her head at him. Before she could protest, Alastor put a finger up, shushing her. " Before you argue, I am perfectly capable to handling myself. Besides, I wouldn't be alone." He said, gesturing to his shadow, which danced happily at his request. Helen sighed before feeling herself grow tired, sipping more of her tea.

" Still, we don't know-"

"Yes, we don't know anything about her!" Alastor said smiling, before turning in a circle as his shadow danced on the wall. " But that makes it all the more exciting!" Alastor said, before disappearing into the kitchen.

September 26th, 1918

Three days ago my shop was featured in the quaters paper. That very same day, we got around twenty seven customers, all before dusk had taken over. Our first shopper of the day was a woman named Helen. She seemed to have some other motive, one I'm not sure if I'm willing to figure out or not. Our second was an older man, who just wanted to buy some sage for his wife. He said she had been terribly ill, so we gave him some herbs to see if it had helped her. Today he came in saying she was feeling better, and bought more herbs from us. It felt pleasant to see a smile on his face. Then we had two men come in, buying a few bowls and one bought a mask. We got a young girl later on after that, buying some red wax with twine and a bowl, some crystals as well. She asked us what the easiest way to cast a love spell was. I told her only the weak use that. She also tried stealing a book. Little did she know she left more than just the stolen book.

Two days ago we had a radio installed into the store, just near the counter, to keep Maxine occupied. She liked listening to the men talk on the stations, some of them going on about boring politics and money while some just sweet talked the listeners. It was then I found out Helen's son, Alastor, had his own booth. Maxine had been fawning over his voice, being one of the few who loved to sweet talk as if his life depended on it. It made me want to rip my spine out.

Yesterday we had our first complaint. A christian women, from the riverside. She had heard about our shop, word to mouth, and came to the store saying she would pray for us. I simply told her she was in the wrong place for that, and stepping inside our store made her just as much of a sinner as the ones working for me. She didn't like that, but I let her go with a thank you bag, complementary for giving us 'feedback.' I also sent a spirit with her, to taunt her for wasting a quater of my life.

Today, I start my readings. The customers that came back with their tarot cards requested to have a reading, and one by one, they all left either shaken up or completely at ease. It was almost midday when Maxine had rushed behind my curtain to bother me.

"He's here, Y/n oh my god he's here!" Maxine whispered to me as I began to sort through my deck. I rolled my eyes, fixing my necklace as she walked in circles.

" Who exactly are you speaking of?" I asked, before Maxine smiled widely before she poked her head out of the curtain, before shutting it abruptly again.

"Alastor!" She whispered happily, before she looked out the curtain again and then shutting it.

"He's looking around." Maxine said excitedly.

"Well he's clearly looking for something. Get out there and do your job." I say quickly, before Maxine nods and goes back to the counter. The curtains are thick, but hang just an inch off the floor. From my spot in my own room, I can hear the entire conversation.

"Hello there, c-can I help you with something?" Maxine asks, she seems nervous. His footsteps get louder, assuming he's walking towards her now.

"Yes you may." He said, before silence follows after.

"Oh, I see. Well, I don't exactly know what our policy is regarding this. Maybe you should just speak to Y/n herself." Maxine says, before I hear her footsteps coming towards the curtain. I stand and before she can say anything I speak first.

"It's about the card isn't it?" I asked, stepping through the curtain and past Maxine. I'm right, of course. The card I sent with his mother sits on the counter, the seven of cups staring right back at him.

"Precisely!" He says, as chipper as ever. Today, he's in an all brown suit, almost tan, with a white undershirt and brown tie to match. His suit is perfect, not a thread or wrinkle in sight.

"I see. Follow me." I say, stepping to the side to let him behind the counter. I take the card off the counter as we walk back, pushing past the curtain. In the room, there's a circular table, with a black cloth over it. Chalk, a bowl, twine and some incense, as well as my deck. There are five chairs around the table, and I take my usual seat, near most of my items.

Then, I take the walk and stand, drawing a circle on the ground and around the table. Alastor watches as I do all of this, silent.

"He'll need to go." I say, before Alastor stares at me confused. I walk over to one of my shelves, seeing as their all around the room, and grab a bottle of salt and other herbs. "Unless you want him to be washed away by the end of this." I say, and Alastor's smile tightens, almost painful, as his shadow disappears. I create a ring of herbs around us, before I take my seat and wrap twine around both of my hands, tieing a knot on each one, before shuffling through my deck.

"Why does my mother see the five of cups, but I see seven?" Alastor asks, picking up the card and turning it. Then his eyes widen. "Where did the writing go?" He asks, staring at me. I look up at him for a brief moment before going back to shuffling my deck.

"The writing disappears once the card is returned back to it's sender." I say, before setting the cards out smoothly. "Now, shall we get started?"

Personal day-to-day associations with the Gods

Óðinn: the traditional Scandinavian music I listen to, reading books, hearing or telling stories, darkness in general (like after having closed all the lights in the house), red wine and strong alcohols such as spirits, local woodland berries such as currants, gooseberries, blackcurrant (etc). 

Yngvi-Freyr: cooking/baking (especially traditional food), windy days, hikes in the woods, fall colors, sunsets, road trips, picking flowers, light rain, gardening, the countryside, cold tea, the moment when spring becomes summer.

Thórr: doing manual work, beer, dusk, taking well deserved breaks from work, cloudy days, evergreen trees, disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with the open air, eating or cooking red meats, weather events ranging from light snow to strong rains, singing at the top of my lungs, joking around with friends, going to the bar after a hard week’s work, celebrations in general.

Freyja: showering and taking baths, perfumes and anything fragrant, eating fruit, doing a skincare routine or buying a new skincare product, collecting fallen tree leaves, visiting a pagan shop, practicing magic, warm colors and especially red, petting cats, having funny exchanges with friends and sharing current concerns with them. 

Frigg: learning traditional crafts, attending local events, speaking with elders, enjoying a moment of harmony with family, feeling at home, cooking or baking, browsing through farmers’ markets, telling a loved one I love them, doing nostalgic stuff to reconnect with my childhood (such as watching children’s movies!) and doing divination, especially tarot.

Baldr: the color blue, cloudless skies, very cold days, whenever I see springs or waterfalls (which doesn’t happen that often but still!), seeing children play, birds’ song, listening to soft music such as flute, harp or lyre, whenever I willfully build up self confidence (I always feel like He’s the one encouraging me).

Loki: listening to classic rock or power metal, starting bonfires or woodstoves, fire in general like playing around with a lighter or matches, playing pranks, making spontaneous decisions, puzzles and riddles, masks though I’m not certain why.

Týr: seeing fur garments such as fur coats or winter clothing, traveling by boat, camping in thick and isolated woods, browsing through medieval shops, wolf imagery, cuddling up by a fire after a cold day spent outside, whenever a battle scene comes up in a movie or show, celtic music but I’m not sure why I make that association honestly!

Hel: gothic-style clothes, incense, skull imagery, practicing magic and divination, spirit work, ancestor work, visiting loved one’s graves and leaving flowers, graveyards in general (especially those in small villages), learning about different spiritualities and the way they each envision the afterlife.

Heimdallr: caring for animals, spending alone time outside, climbing trees or rocks, high places in general, reading through the Völuspá, making the effort to listen instead of speak, making a kind gesture randomly, helping people in general.

Skaði: hiking in the mountains, stays at cabins, exploring woods, staying at very unpopulated areas, evergreen trees and especially spruce, watching snowstorms, meditation, hearing/reading mythological stories, winter comfort foods such as soups and meats, stargazing.

Eir: herbalism, learning about local plants and trees, brewing potions, caring for a sick loved one, kitchen witchcraft, and something we call “grandma recipes” over here, that consist of dubiously scientific medicine (lying on your left side to heal an upset stomach quicker, using potato peels against warts, etc). I’d have to make a whole post to list those out. These types of medicine tricks that seem mysteriously effective ahaha!

These are only a few of my deities, but they’re the ones I feel closest to these days.

ok long ramble up ahead — tw kinda gorey descriptions, eye stuff

so i have what i call ‘solo’ ocs - which are ocs that i created without a story (at first at least) and they don’t really have a fleshed out cast of supporting characters and ive been sooooo obsessed with them lately so here’s what tarot cards i think fit them best and what the designs of them on those cards would be

Devil’s Advocate (D.A.) / Daisy as The Devil - okay this fits too easily but you must also know that she’s a LAWYER. and i decided that The Devil fit better than Justice. why - other than the fact that she just is a devil, one of the meanings attributed to the card (from a quick search) is shadow selves and Daisy’s thing is all about how she’s escaping all the expectations and the image of this ‘sweet, innocent’ little girl who can’t be taken seriously, to instead be this free devil, when everyone thinks the old Daisy is dead. some of the other meaning (especially the reverse ones) also kinda fit too !!

but ANYWAY onto the design of the card : she’s (of course) the devil and i imagine her leaning on the judge’s stand very lazily. she’s in this classy angular suit and has grey skin and fire hair billowing up. her sharp teeth are bared in a grin and she’s a got a hand with pointed claws gestured up beside her. on one side of her is the shadowy figure of the prosecutor (yeahhh she’s an attorney), who is much smaller than her on the card, and on the other side are the reporters (also shadowy figures, also small. chains are connected to each, held in her hand. the courtroom behind her is barely lit, as though at dusk, her fire being the brightest thing in there. shadow-people line the walls like in pews - they’re the jury. the way the little bit of light is scattered around the room and through the window makes it seem like there’s a stained glass window behind her and it’s a cathedral. you may see a glimpse of the bright, human daisy. behind her in the light

Shrike as Justice - and HERES a character that fits Justice SOOOO extremely well. and shrike is all about 1) hunger, and of much more relevance, 2) vengeance. she is LITERALLY eye for an eye..

I imagine Shrike emerging from her basement prison, dirtied and bloodied and cast in a heavy shadow. she’s dressed in a very dirty, very bloody, brown butcher’s apron, trousers and linen shirt. on one side she is missing an eye, a dark gorey cavity left instead, her face also heavily scarred on that side, but a shrike’s wing is extended in its full beautiful glory. on her other side, there is an eye, looking dead on and murderous, but her wing on that side is torn in half, sinew flesh and bone pressing out from sparse ruffled feathers. she is holding a knobbly cane that’s pretty much just a stick on the side of her bad eye, and she holding a massive, menacing axe on the side of her bad wing. blah blah all of these im making metaphors for vengeance and justice blah blah

AND FINALLLYYYY Sunada as Strength - my newest oc !! and her whole thing is being strong in all senses of the word and having influence. she is also incredibly intimidating but that may be less relevant lmao

the beast most associated with her is the phoenix, so in this i imagine she’s wrestling a phoenix. and i MEAN wrestling. they are brawling - she is pinning it to the ground and wrenching its beak open. Sunada is at a side profile and her black hair falls in curtains in the far side of her face. she is determined as she stares down the phoenix. she’s dressed in dress trousers, a blazer hanging half-off, and a shirt that’s loosely tucked and half unbuttoned. she has a bulky, top heavy build and is SOO butch it’s unbelievable. the embers and feathers of the phoenix fly everywhere and the card is so so red.

anyways yeah im so normal about them. D.A. I made a while back and i haven’t really revisited but i still love her so much while the other two are a LOT more recent and im still actively thinking about them… sighhh badass women save me
