It's Souls Bloom but with more backstory moments/characters! (e.g. Relvin and Liliana, or Dancer, or Ashton and the Nobodies, or Chetney and Deanna centuries ago, or Delilah and Sylas being obnoxious as hell soulmates at That Dinner, etc.)

Unrooted but doing just Fine

The thing about making it to middle-aged (in a fucking long life) without ever having a soulmate is that you learn to enjoy the brief encounters life brings you.

Chetney's had a lot of flings in his two-hundo years of living. Flings based on raw, animal attraction, on a conversation where things click, or just because they're both lonely and need a little comfort in the night.

Nothing that lasts, though. But that's fine. None of it is really meant to last, not when he's got no soul blooms to his name. Chetney's not long-term loveable yet (maybe ever, but that's a dark thought he doesn't dwell on if he can help it).

And really, flings are the way to go when you're bloomless like Chetney. Keep it to a night or three and they'll never notice the lack of blooms. After all, a few bloomless days aren't out of the question when everyone's in good health and out of danger. But long term? Never sending so much as a poke gets real noticeable real fast when you're intimate.

Deanna, though, she's pushing for longer. And Chetney's tempted to give it to her.

She's got a nice laugh, a warm brightness to her like the sandy beach they met on that's hard not to be attracted to. That she's a certified freak in the sheets only makes it better. Fuck, she's even into crafting, if with a focus on knitting rather than his own love of woodwork.

Point is, Deanna's great.

But she's got a soulmate of her own, out there, waiting, sending her wide leaves of aloe. Deanna has someone waiting for her, Chetney doesn't. And fuck if there aren't a thousand superstitions and rumors about how no blooms make one an unlovable monster.

Still, Deanna pushes. A second night, a third, a fourth.

On the fifth night, she figures him out.

"You're not unlovable," she whispers into the midnight silence after wringing the confession out of him. "I mean–" and she gestures to their naked, sweat-damp bodies.

"There's a difference between this and forever," Chetney grumps back. After all, he already knows short-term works just fine. It's the lifetime promise of soulmates that he's never going to have.

"Only if you let there be," Deanna presses.

And he kisses her to shut her up, get them off this fucking depressing topic. (He doesn't like considering that he's the problem, not in that he's unlovable, but in that he refuses to love)

"You're not unlovable," Deanna whispers once more as they curl up to finally sleep. "And one day you'll have the blooms to help you see it."

He disappears in the morning (he doesn't know how to face such affection, so he simply doesn't), never to be seen by Deanna again in this life.

Over two hundred years later, when Deanna (only a few decades older than last he saw her, brought back to a life long ended) sees Chetney again, covered in the blooms he never had before, she gives him a knowing smile. He just harumphs. But a pleased grin tugs at his own lips.

"Not so unlovable after all."

I have mentioned before that Dustel and Deanna probably had a bloom bond, so I decided to double down on that here. Now aloe isn't really a flower, per say, but a flower meanings guide I looked at listed it as "affection, also grief" and really, that's a great descriptor to Deanna and Dustel's relationship with the being married then resurrecting 200 years later but not actually sticking it out afterwards.

They're such a cute ship!! i rewatched ST with my dad not long ago since he'd never seen it and i bullied him into watching it. An i'm the type of person who can only ship chemistry, i dont give a shit if it's het, gay, or something in between, if there's solid chemistry that an asexual bitch with autism and ADHD can pick up, then i'm down.

El and Dustin? There's SO much chemistry there. He'd be so good for her, she'd never be uncertain of his feelings, he'd always hype her up, they're like, the cutest power couple.

She'd be happy from day one had Dustin taken her in instead of Mike, would never have any relationship concerns ever cause he'd make the best boyfriend, which we know, because he's adorable with Suzie.

El deserves someone either as good as Dustin, or actually Dustin in her life.

History of "Henderhop"

I'm seeing claims that "Henderhop came out of nowhere"; this is literally objectively false. Fans have been shipping Dustin and El for years!!

Stranger Things was first released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The first Dustin/El fic was posted to AO3 on October 20, 2016.

The second Dustin/El fic was posted to AO3 on December 20, 2017. Because of how Mileven dominates the fandomscape during this pre-season 3 era, Dustin/El is such a rarepair that they don't even have a commonly-used ship name yet. "Dustel" and "Duleven" are received with equal indifference.

The third Dustin/El fic was posted to AO3 on June 28, 2018. The fourth and fifth are explicit works that i didn't bother reading.

The ship name "Henderhop" came about ca. summer 2019, shortly before season 3 came out.

One of the first notable shippers was this user who occupies the tumblr url @henderhop.

I'm not going to link any blog's archives without their permission, but there are plenty of ST blogs that have posts tagged #henderhop, dating back to 2019.

In June 2022, i started my blog; there have been 100+ new followers of the Henderhop tag since then.

There have been haters who have changed their minds, and there's a quiet minority of non-shippers who think we only ship Henderhop because we want all 6 Party members to be paired up with each other, and not because we genuinely think El and Dustin are good for each other.

January 2023: Henderhop now has a page on the Shipping fan wiki.

As of May 2023, tumblr's Henderhop tag still has less than 1k followers.
