Lavender Lightning
Chapter 2
Warnings: self-destructive behavior
Chapter 1: link
"He's the cause of all this!" Barry shouted, angry and in disbelief at what he was hearing. Joe couldn't actually be considering letting Harrison Wells take Iris to S.T.A.R. Labs instead of leaving her with legitimate medical doctors. "If his accelerator hadn't caused that freak storm, Iris wouldn't...Iris would be..." Barry's voice broke, his eyes wet with tears as he collapsed heavily onto one of the uncomfortable maroon chairs in the hospital hall.
"Barry, I know you're upset and believe me, I am too, that man did a lot of harm, but you're looking for someone to blame," Joe said, sitting next to him and placing a hand on his shoulder.
Barry set his jaw and looked away, feeling like he was being scolded. "Of course you don't believe me."
"Barr, listen to me. Wells' machine did not cause that storm. Now, he caused a lot of other problems but he sounds like he has a solution for Iris and I'm gonna hear him out. You can come with me or not, that's up to you. But I'm gonna do what I think is best for Iris." Joe pat Barry's shoulder once before standing and draping his coat over his arm.
"I want what's best for Iris too. I just don't think Dr. Wells is it, Joe. I really don't." Barry said quietly as Joe walked away.
Barry had hardly eaten since Iris had been admitted to the hospital, feeling like all he wanted to do was run a million miles an hour until he burned into nothing or just crawl into bed and sleep until Iris woke up again. He couldn't stomach the thought of losing her, he didn't know what to do without his best friend by his side. Barry let out a heavy sigh and took off his glasses - spares, he hadn't had time to get his old ones fixed or replaced with everything that had happened - before scrubbing his face with his hands as though that could make the mounting anxiety leave.
Barry's stomach growled and as if in cue, a Big Belly Burger bag was in front of his face. He followed the arm holding it up to see Eddie and forced a smile. They hardly knew each other, but still, Eddie had been there consistently from the moment Iris had been hurt. It was nice. He was nice.
"Hey. I thought you guys might be getting hungry. Where's Joe?" Eddie's voice was warm as he took the seat next to Barry.
Barry pressed his lips into a firm line and leaned back, replacing his glasses and accepting the burger and fries from the older man. "Harrison Wells wants to take Iris to S.T.A.R. Labs. Joe's talking to him."
Eddie surveyed him with a raised eyebrow as Barry took a bite of fry. "You sound like you don't like that idea."
Barry huffed out a bitter laugh. "I would've about a month ago. I don't trust him to fix anything after that disaster." He spat with more venom than was probably necessary.
It really wasn't about the accelerator - mistakes were common in science, he knew that, and catastrophic at the best of times even with every variable accounted for - he couldn't blame Dr. Wells for that. He was certain, though, that if it hadn't happened that night, Iris wouldn't have been struck by lightning. Hell, if he hadn't insisted Iris come with him to see it launch, she wouldn't have gotten her bag stolen, he wouldn't have gotten his ass kicked, and she wouldn't have even been in his lab that night.
"Barry?"
Barry blinked, uncertain how long he'd been staring at the burger in his hand for in complete silence. "Sorry. S.TA.R. Labs isn't a hospital, Iris should be here."
Eddie took a fry and chewed it slowly as he contemplated his words. "There are a couple of doctors who have a medical or bio background on S.T.A.R. Labs' staff, at least there were when I checked the records while processing the scene. If they're still employed there, she'll be in good hands," he offered.
Barry hummed noncommittally and set the burger aside, his stomach twisting in more knots the more he thought about it. "I think I'm going to walk around for a while, I've been sitting for too long. Thanks for the food." He tried to force another smile but it felt awkward and he immediately dropped it again and averted his gaze.
"Do you want me to-"
"No." Barry interrupted loudly before lowering his tone, color flooding his cheeks. "Sorry, I didn't mean...I...I'd just rather be alone right now." He said, pushing himself up and walking aimlessly down the hallway in the opposite direction Joe had gone, trying not to look back at Eddie and see how hurt he probably was. He was so kind, he didn't deserve Barry biting his head off every few seconds.
He couldn't seem to do anything but lash out at everyone lately. There was this overwhelming itch at the back of his mind that told him he should be doing something; there had to be something more than just sitting in a hospital waiting for news. Aiming his vitriol at Harrison Wells eased the ache somewhat, but it was still there, still a constant presence that had him feeling more and more on edge, almost like the lightning that had hit Iris was coursing through him, trapped in his skin.
He didn't realize he'd left the hospital until the frozen night air hit his lungs and made him cough, his chest aching. He didn't have an inhaler on him, he should get inside. But what was the point of that? He couldn't help Iris regardless. Whether he had an asthma attack or not wouldn't make a difference, all it would do was solidify how fucking useless he felt. At this point, the only person who could make this all better was lying in a hospital bed comatose. There was nothing he could do to change that.
He sank heavily onto a bench beside the hospital, gripping his chest and trying to stall a panic attack before it could take hold. Iris had flatlined three more times today, once just before Dr. Wells had arrived to make his proposal, and Barry couldn't help but wonder every time if he would have to say goodbye. How many more times could they stabilize her? He felt like he was drowning, his lungs filled with solid ice.
Warm hands gripped his shoulders and gently guided him up and back inside.
"What the hell are you doing, Barr?" Joe demanded, fishing a spare inhaler out of his coat pocket and pushing it into Barry's hands before removing said coat and draping it around Barry's shoulders. "You're not helping Iris by freezing to death out here."
Barry took a couple of grateful puffs of medication from the inhaler before trying to speak. "Didn't know- it was- so c-cold-" he managed.
"Bet you know now." Joe commented dryly but not unkindly. "Come on."
Barry allowed Joe to usher him through the hall and into the elevator up to Iris's floor.
"We're getting her things, they're moving her to S.T.A.R. Labs." Joe informed him as they walked.
Barry's pace faltered and he nearly tripped on air. "I thought we were going to talk about it."
"We did. You made your opinion clear. I made mine. The doctors have cleared her to be moved and are willing to trust Dr. Wells with this and so am I. Unless you have a better argument, this isn't open for discussion anymore," Joe said firmly.
Frustration and anger flooded his system and he bit the inside of his cheek hard to keep from saying anything he'd regret. He'd never forgive himself if he destroyed his relationship with Joe, especially not if Iris…
Barry sighed tiredly, the anger draining out of his system as quickly as it came. "Fine."
Joe tugged him into a hug and kissed the top of his head, crushing Barry's glasses into the side of his face. "It'll be okay, Barr. We'll be okay...whatever happens." He promised and Barry felt his grip on him tighten for a split second before he let go.

“We’ll continue to acclimate to the heat! People in the desert already do!” No we fucking don’t
Maricopa County, the county that Phoenix, AZ resides in, has seen 425 confirmed heat deaths already this year, which matches the 2022 total, and they’re expecting the number to grow with 199 more under investigation, and the heat continuing into November.
It’s the 3rd week of October and we’ve been in the 100s still. Our average high is typically in the high 80s.
“In 2023, 226 heat caused deaths have been recorded, and 199 heat-related deaths have been recorded. 199 deaths are still under investigation. Of those who died this year, 29% were 50-64 years-old and 44% of those deaths were people experiencing homelessness. From 2006 to 2015, 777 heat deaths were recorded. From 2016 to 2022, 1,801 heat-associated deaths were recorded – more than double the number of heat deaths recorded in a six year period than the nine years beforehand.”
At this same time last year, 359 heat-associated deaths were confirmed and 91 still under investigation.
Phoenix also hit a record 31 consecutive days of 110°F+ this year. The previous record was 18.
This is already affecting those of us in the hottest climates on earth and we are not used to it. People are dying from heart related deaths in their homes, in parking lots, and in their cars. And god forbid you pass out from heat outside- even if you survive you’ll get 3rd degree contact burns in seconds.

One Cabin🌳🪵🍃
Miguel O'Hara x AFAB Spider-Woman Reader
Tumblr media
TW: Suggestive, nudity, tension, minors DNI, enemies to lovers. Word count: 425
A/N: sorry y'all. I wanna be stuck in a cabin with Miguel lol 🫣. Inspired by that fountain scene from Atonement.
Continued...
------
Thinking about being forced to share a small cabin with Miguel on a mission, much to both of your dismay. The anomaly you're hunting is out in the remote wilderness. Hundreds of thousands of acres of trees, grass, and mountainous terrain. The land owner is allowing you two to stay on his vast property in the ranch hands' cabin located wayyy on the outskirts near a creek, shielded by tall trees on all sides. There are two bedrooms that connect through a sliding barn door.
So, you come to an agreement.
You stay on your side, I stay on mine.
Don't touch each other's food.
Don't take forever in the single bathroom.
Quiet starts at 7 pm. (Miguel’s idea),
and this mission will be over before we know it.
But then little things start to happen that make it really hard to stay focused on keeping to yourselves. One afternoon when you were standing in the creek, trying to cool off, head tilted back enjoying the sun, he quietly came and stood next to you in the water. You look at him, annoyed at having your alone time interrupted, telling him to watch his footing, there's sharp rocks in the stream bed near where he's standing, to which he bluntly replies that his vision is perfectly fine.
It leads to small bickering, then you kick up some water at him with a little splash. Astonished, he leans over and splashes you back. Soon you're splashing each other, screaming and giggling like kids, until you both fall down together in the creek, getting completely soaked. Then, when he's sputtering and apologizing to help you back up, his breath hitches when he sees the white flowy sundress you're wearing is completely see through, the soaked fabric leaving nothing to the imagination, your nipples, breasts, tummy, and sex deliciously and erotically outlined, shielded only by the sopping wet fabric.
You don't have to look down at yourself to tell, the way his lips gently part, the breath he was taking has frozen in his chest as it seems as though time itself stopped, eyes roaming all over you. Your lips mirror his, falling a little bit open, eyes melting as you lock onto him, just now realizing how alluring he looks when he's looking at you like you're the most exquisite being on earth.
You snap out of it, walking quickly into the cabin in flustered silence as he sighs, clenching his fist until his knuckles turn white, creek waters continuing to trickle down the rocks in yearning quiet.

Kitchen Catastrophe
Gojo x reader Genre: Fluff Words: 425 Synopsis: Gojo isn't the best cook, but he tries. Masterlist
Tumblr media
It was a quiet evening at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. You had just returned from a particularly grueling mission and went to Principal Yaga to give updates. All you wanted to do was relax after going home. Little did you know, Gojo had a surprise in store for you.
As you entered your shared apartment, the scent of something burning hit your nose like a curse gone wrong. You followed the trail of smoke into the kitchen, where you found Gojo wearing an apron that had a rather enthusiastic depiction of panda bears.
"Welcome home, my dear!" Gojo greeted you with a wide grin, despite the cloud of smoke surrounding him.
"Baby, what on earth is happening here?" you asked, trying not to cough from the thick air.
"I thought I'd make you a special meal to celebrate your successful mission!" Gojo proudly announced, gesturing to the kitchen disaster unfolding before you.
You surveyed the wreckage—pots blackened beyond recognition, vegetables scattered like cursed spirits fleeing from Gojo's cooking skills, and a smoke alarm wailing in the background.
"Special is one way to describe it," you mumbled under your breath.
Undeterred, Gojo presented a plate with what appeared to be a charred lump of something. "Voila! My masterpiece!"
You squinted at the unidentifiable object on the plate. "Satoru, is this supposed to be... curry?"
He nodded proudly, "I tried to add a personal touch by channeling my innate charisma into the spices." he sighed dramatically. "Turns out, charisma isn't a suitable replacement for cooking skills."
You chuckled, realizing that Gojo's culinary adventure had transformed your kitchen into a battlefield. "Well, I appreciate the effort, love. Let's just order takeout, okay?"
But Gojo wasn't one to back down easily. "No, no, no! I'm not giving up that easily. I'll make it up to you. Just wait here."
You watched as Gojo attempted to salvage the situation, but with each passing moment, it seemed like the kitchen was swallowing him whole. The smoke intensified, and you could hear the distant sound of a fire extinguisher being activated.
"Alright, maybe takeout is a better idea," Gojo admitted, emerging from the smoke with a sheepish grin.
As you both settled down with a much safer meal from your favorite restaurant, Gojo couldn't help but laugh at his own misadventure. "I guess I'll stick to being a badass sorcerer instead of a chef."
You raised an eyebrow. You wondered what your state of mind would be when you go to clean up the kitchen, but that can wait.

Like he gets home from a job and is drained and tired, it's the first time the reader is staying the night and she's constantly hugging him and making sure he's OK after the job, he feels safe around her. Ends with something cute like there watching a film but he gets tired and lays his head on her lap and she gently strokes his hair and as he falls asleep he tells her he loves her

Tangerine had not long been home from work, and you could instantly tell by his sluggish expression that his day had not been easy. Whenever you saw him like this, all you wanted to do, was love and care for him. His job wasn't the healthiest, and occasionally you could tell that some days had more effect on him than others— and today was one of those days.
You were still in the early stage of your relationship, so this was the first time staying over his for the night. You have never seen him immediately after a mission- he would always go home, clean up and refresh before seeing you- so this was something very new to you— more intimate even.
He looked so defeated after his day, and the sight of him was enough to tug your heartstrings. All you wanted to do, was make him feel better. So, you did. You ran him a bath, washed his hair, cleaned the blood from under his nails, dried and dressed him; you did everything you could to lighten his heavy load of the day. Whatever you thought he needed-you did it.
Once Tangerine was clean and semi-relaxed, you ushered him to the sofa, allowing him to lay flat with his head resting upon your lap as you watched a film. Your hand is tender and warm, cupping his cheek and brushing over the apple with your thumb. You watched over him, counting the tiny patch of sun freckles under his eyes, looking down at him with nothing but admiration. His blue gaze softens as he looks up at you, and he seems content, happy- much unlike an hour ago.
"How you feeling?" you quietly ask, brushing your fingers over the small curls that framed his face.
"Better," he gently smiles, closing his eyes as he melts into your delicate touch. "Thank you," he adds, extending a hand into your spare one, lacing into your fingers. Tangerine brings your entangled hand to his mouth, and he places a soft kiss on the back of it, never once leaving your gaze. "I appreciate you,"
"I appreciate you, too," you smile and lean over him, peppering his forehead with a tender kiss. "You're so beautiful," you whisper, stroking over his brows as if to soothe him, watching his lids grow heavy under your touch. "Now you get some rest,"
"I love you," he murmurs, loosening his grip on your hand.
"I love you," you grin, tucking the blanket around his sleeping form. "So much."

Why Princess Anne will be the King’s bedrock of support
The royal world has changed once again – but the industrious Princess Royal will keep the show on the road
By Camilla Tominey for the Daily Telegraph
Over the years, she has tumbled down the line of succession to a lowly 17th place in the Windsor pecking order.
On paper, the Princess Royal may not be the most prominent royal, lagging well behind her nephew Prince Harry and her brother the Duke of York – even though they are no longer “working” royals.
But when it comes to putting in the hours on behalf of the family Firm, few could dispute Princess Anne’s status as one of the King’s most stalwart supporters.
As the 75-year-old monarch on Monday began what Buckingham Palace has described as a “schedule of regular treatments” following his cancer diagnosis, his 73-year-old sister was the first to ride to the royal rescue.
With typical gusto, the grandmother-of-five put her best foot forward to carry out an investiture at Windsor Castle at 11am on Tuesday, before turning her attention to three further royal engagements.
After handing out gongs to the likes of media doyenne Elisabeth Murdoch, conductor Ivor Bolton, tenor Nicky Spence and wheelchair rugby league player James Simpson, the Princess made her way up to the Midlands for yet more pressing of the flesh.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday afternoon, she was due to visit Nottingham West Primary Care Network at Eastwood Primary Care Centre in her capacity as patron of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, as well as popping in on woolmaker GH Hurt and Son.
She then plans to travel the 128 miles back to London to present The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering at the Science Museum.
Although the jobs will have been in the royal diary for months, they reiterate the importance of the Princess’s role as the Royal family’s resident trooper.
Last year, she was once again crowned the hardest-working royal, clocking up an impressive 457 engagements, 32 more than the 425 carried out by the King.
Not that there is any sibling rivalry between the pair. Although they used to “fight like cats and dogs” when they were little, according to Ingrid Seward, the veteran royal author and commentator: “Charles and Anne’s relationship is very good now.
“They have a great mutual respect. Before the prospect of Charles marrying Camilla became a possibility, the late Queen always thought it would be Anne at Charles’s side, acting as a sort of incognito Queen. Elizabeth II always had that vision – that Anne would play a hugely significant supporting role.”
Her bond with the King was plain to see during their mother’s funeral, when the Princess was the only woman to join the solemn march behind the coffin for the procession to Westminster Abbey.
As her brother’s eyes threatened to overflow with tears, his characteristically calm and collected sister looked him straight in the eye with a silent show of support.
Tumblr media
In her 2022 book The Palace Papers, the journalist Tina Brown even went so far as to suggest that “there are plenty in palace circles who believe she is the best king we will never have”.
Stalwart, straightforward and surprisingly down to earth (despite being an unapologetic stickler for royal protocol), the Princess’s popularity within the household and beyond has been built on her reputation for getting on with it with little fuss or fanfare.
As Valentine Low explained in his 2022 book, Courtiers: “That was Harry and Meghan’s downfall – there was too much ego. Anne has no ego. She recognises that this is the job, and you just get on with it.”
It is a testament to the Princess’s work ethic that Buckingham Palace has stressed that the King will not need to use counsellors of state – royals authorised to carry out the monarch’s official duties should they be incapacitated or overseas.
Historically, they are the sovereign’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. Until recently, the King’s were Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice.
Amid concern that Princes Harry and Andrew no longer undertake official royal duties and that the former does not even live in the country, a change was made to the Regency Act of 1937 to include the Princess along with her youngest brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Both will be expected to increase their workload in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis, which has forced him to cancel all forward-facing public engagements to minimise any health risks.
As heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales will also undertake royal engagements on behalf of his father along with the Queen.
Yet with the Princess of Wales also out of action until after Easter after undergoing abdominal surgery, the monarchy has never looked more “slimmed down”.
Naturally Anne was one of the first to identify the potential pitfalls of stripping back the number of “working” royals.
“Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ [monarchy] was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment,” she said in an interview last year.
When it was put to her that the world changes, she added: “It changes a bit. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”
The royal world has changed once again – and as ever, industrious Princess Anne is front and centre of efforts to keep the show on the road.

So MOTH is a connected storyline, are other storylines like Bastard Warrior, Space Pirates, Pandora, etc.
Are any of those storylines connected to each other?
They're all connected as they take place in the same universe, yes.
MotH takes place on the Wizard planet, Manas.
Bastard Warrior takes place on the now half-planet, New Tennessee.
Space Pirates takes place in a distant galaxy known as Hoag’s Object.
Pandora takes place on 3 planets. Estleheim, planet of robo vikings, Kerrelor, planet of alien wolf people, and Orrery, planet of the Giants.
Pandora takes place a couple billion years before the other stories, however.
Bastard Warrior takes place 137 years after Earth is destroyed.
MotH takes place 425 years after, and SPS takes place 430 years after.

i didn't eat today and nobody noticed
the oven chokes and groans when you turn it above 425
the doors have no handles
peek a boo holes through each entrance
only a subtle push to exit
the cracks in the tile look marbled
and your eyes get used to the way the kitchen light flickers constantly
the bones of the house creek and stretch to hold us inside
the ropes hold the garage door down to protect our possessions
the broken boards in the fence are blocked with garbage bins
and we don't even try to close the pool gate anymore.
we learn to swim.
the glassware with leftover dinner i brought home is cold against my skin and placing it in the fridge feels like a safe that locks from the inside.
i place my belongings there never knowing if i'll ever see them again
at earth's beginning there was water and smoke
i think i will blend into the wallpaper, fall apart with this house and return to the dirt

Never-Ending Betelgeuse
It’s a long story, so I want to take my time. (Chapter 425). | @kagumo-zine fic for The Man and The Moon Zine | AO3 |
                          ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
When Sakumo wakes up, he is not alone in his house.
By instinct, his hand is on his tantō before his feet even hit the ground. His eyes are still adjusting to the morning light as he treads silently toward the kitchen. The scent is somehow woody, ambrosial, and medicinal all at once, but barely there, in the way a summons would be before they first travel to their contract. He might not have noticed it at all were it not for the humming.
There is a steady, low hum, drifting out from deeper in his home. It is neither meditative nor melodic. More so, it sounds to Sakumo like the buzzing of bees or the inexplicable plaints of the forest which set the deer on edge.
It is all the more perplexing when he sees the source of the noise. The mouth of the most lovely woman he has ever seen, standing barefoot and seemingly unarmed in the middle of his home, who pauses her strange song to bite one of the red onions he had harvested this season as if it were an apple.
She takes no note of Sakumo entering the kitchen. He is standing directly in front of her, his sword half-raised, still in his bedclothes, so she can’t possibly be ignorant of his presence. Still, her focus is on the onion. He gets the feeling he’s being ignored.
“Excuse me,” says Sakumo, clearing his throat. “But those are my onions.”
She finally looks at him. And with a smile that knocks the wind out of Sakumo, matter-of-factly informs him, “I ate them.”
“Er, why?”
His intruder considers the question. Glancing upward in reflection, she decides, “Hunger.”
Sakumo laughs, finally lowering his tantō. He supposes that’s as good an answer as any other. “If you’re hungry, I can make you something,” he offers.
She smiles more widely, and Sakumo thinks this must’ve been the correct answer. Her hair, both silver and purple, sways as instantaneously she moves from several metres away to right in front of his nose. By the speed of the movement, he’s not sure he would’ve been able to reach her with his tantō if he’d tried.
“I am Kaguya,” she says, so close he’s almost cross-eyed trying to meet her gaze. From this distance, it is clear that her eyes are not just glassy, as he’d thought, but lacking any pupils. Her height is also a surprise, unimposing as she’d seemed in his kitchen.
“Hatake Sakumo,” he replies, stepping back so that he has enough room to bow.
“Sakumo,” she repeats, like a song.
“So, what do you like to eat besides onions?”
--
The next time he sees Kaguya, his fingers are buried deep in the snow amongst his cabbages.
It is tedious work, moving through the layers of slush and straw that cover his vegetables. The other villagers of his skillset would be using their chakra and tools to complete this task. Yet Sakumo’s ancestors also grew their own crops, and while he’s not above breaking tradition, there is something to the value of what can be done by hand. So he digs.
When Sakumo collects his last cabbage a few hours later, he finds a pair of familiar white eyes looking at him intently through the bed of straw. Just like before, he can perceive what’s in front of him perfectly fine with his own eyes, but all of the instincts and extrasensory abilities he has honed since he was a child are suspiciously silent. It is as if the person in front of him is no different than the water and earth beneath him, or the trees on the far side of his field.
He brushes the straw away from a set of eyes and his fingers graze a warm cheek. “You’re not a scarecrow, are you?”
“Aino said I am a woman,” replies his companion. As she speaks, Sakumo feels the wind shift. It is the only warning he gets before all the snow covering his land melts. Kaguya glides upwards and lands seated on top of the straw bed, as if lying beneath half a metre of sleet is something she does every day.
“You look a little different than most women I know,” Sakumo admits, both artless and appreciative.
In the six months that have passed since she spent three days following him around his farmland, Kaguya has gained a pair of horns on either side of her head, and a third eye closed in what appears strikingly close to a wink.
“What do you think I am?”
Beautiful, Sakumo wants to say, but it feels terribly forward. So instead he says, pink-cheeked and smiling, “Tall.”
“Thank you.”
This time around, she stays longer. It is a full month that Kaguya spends with him. The weather is frigid enough that his skills are more needed in his village than outside of it, and he is grateful for the company.
Kaguya speaks of Aino again, and two people she describes only as “the young ones.” She never says what land or clan she belongs to, but among chakra users that is a common way to avoid bloodshed. Yet he knows she is something, be it samurai, shinobi or spirit. He can tell from the way she replies to thoughts he has not spoken aloud, how she sees the most minute changes in his posture, or how she dances around his sword as he practices his Iaidō. Though that third eye of hers never opens, Sakumo is certain if it did, he would have no way of stopping her.
As it is, Kaguya is only kind to him, curious and forthright in her behaviour. She has no qualms about leaning over Sakumo to grab his hair for his attention or prodding his cheeks when he grins. She calls him breathtakingly human once, and Sakumo blushes for the whole afternoon. He resolves himself to ask if she will stay with him for the spring.
However just as suddenly as she appears, when the first flowers emerge from the ground, Kaguya is gone.
--
Kaguya appears again at the other end of his sword mid-battle.
As with the winter having called upon him to tend to his crops to shore up the agricultural needs of his neighbours, the summer calls upon Sakumo to utilize his most innate skill: fighting.
While his village is not so entrenched in the framework of clans as other followers of ninshū, it is not above skirmishes of land, law and loyalty. The former is what has been troubling them these days. Naturally, Sakumo recognizes that collectives arise where there is free access to water, ore, and arable soil. His people are unfortunate enough to have all three. It is a driving force for desperation in the surrounding areas.
It is why each battle makes Sakumo’s tantō a little heavier in his hand. He wonders if this fight is easier for the shinobi, who have the privilege of only seeing as much of his comrades’ faces as are visible through their armoured masks.
Though his opponents’ usage of chakra is different than his, Sakumo is quick to adapt, and even quicker to cut them down. Shinobi techniques rely on having time to gather energy, and Sakumo’s blade is no different from his own hand to him. The fight is unbalanced. It is this thought that accompanies Sakumo as he strikes at a shinobi who set fire to a half-dozen fields yesterday, belonging to civilians and samurai alike.
His opponent cannot block him. He can feel it slipping between the plates of the other man’s armour. He knows where it will land.
His tantō stops right before it makes contact with his opponent’s heart.
Kaguya’s eyes are closed, but her fingers are gripping the edge of Sakumo’s weapon as if it were one of his wooden dummy swords. Her fingers dig into the neck of the shinobi, stealing his breath. Sakumo’s own breath stops.
“There will be no more fighting,” Kaguya says and opens all three of her eyes.
A flash of light blinds Sakumo temporarily, and he finds his head crashing into the dirt as the earth beneath them moves, more suddenly than he ever thought possible. Though his eyes are squeezed shut, he is certain that debris has filled the air, and he is once again grateful for his mask.
When the world stops again, Sakumo feels a hand brushing dust off his face. “I have solved it,” he hears, in that familiar lilting voice.
It becomes clear as Sakumo blinks and sits up, that the solution before him is the mountain range that has arisen in the middle of what was flatlands moments ago. In the height of summer, they are capped with snow and extend as far as his eyes can see. In fact, he would wager it borders his whole village. The shinobi is nowhere in sight.
“Thank you,” Sakumo says, finally looking back at Kaguya. “But there may still be battles to come.”
Kaguya moves suddenly, and for a moment he expects her to crouch down. Instead, he finds himself being floated upwards by an invisible force so that they are at eye level. “You do not want to fight,” she notes.
The smile on Kaguya’s face flips his stomach in time with the hovering of his body. Sakumo nods. She leans forward and holds his face in her hands. “Then we are the same. I am glad.”
--
They see each other more frequently from then on.
Though Kaguya’s actions have done enough to protect their village from immediate threats, ninshū has always meant more to Sakumo and his comrades than mere combat. So he trains himself, growing stronger and faster to make his naturally low reserves of energy more efficient in their use.
But this time, Kaguya stays and watches. More than that, she shares her techniques with him. He learns from watching her move that he could never hope to match her in speed or strength, even when he suspects she’s using a mere fraction of her power. However, while too skilled to be a match as a sparring partner, she is an eager teacher. She advises him on how to move beyond changing the shape of his chakra to transform its nature.
She beams at him when he first moulds his chakra into the shape of earth and makes a miniature version of her snow-covered mountains. She laughs when he tries to light a candle and blows off his left eyebrow. He kisses her the first time he uses chakra to close his own wound.
He is not bold enough to presume that it is him alone keeping her here, but regardless, he is grateful. He is thankful for the days they spend running him ragged on his fields, and for the days they spend laying underneath the shade of a tree, watching her converse with the nearby rabbits.
Today, Kaguya’s usual leporine conversation seems to have turned into a quarrel. Kaguya and the white-and-brown rabbit glower at each other for a few minutes before Sakumo asks, “What’s the matter?”
“She coddles her kit,” Kaguya says disapprovingly. Before Sakumo can ask what she means, the rabbit freezes abruptly, and a ball of fur with shining red eyes pops out from beneath the creature. “He is old enough to live on his own.”
“Maybe he’s helping her by staying nearby,” Sakumo suggests. “Sometimes it can be difficult for parents to let go.”
Kaguya flops down onto the grass beside him, and the mother rabbit relaxes and mimics her, staring at them with what Sakumo can only imagine is a haughty expression among rabbits. “Parents must ensure their offspring are strong enough to survive.”
“Do you want to have a child?” Sakumo asks thoughtfully. Unbidden, he sees himself chasing a child with his hair and Kaguya’s eyes around these fields. He imagines himself teaching them to hold a sword, and her teaching them to tap into their chakra.
Lost in those thoughts as he is, Kaguya’s clear voice startles him in her reply. “I had two.” She pauses as if reconsidering. “Three. One is me.”
“Three... children?” Sakumo repeats.
Kaguya purses her lips, and her third eye narrows. He knows by now that this expression means she is translating what he’s said into a language more familiar to her than the one they share. After a moment, her face relaxes and she replies, “They are adults.”
Sakumo has always had the sense that Kaguya is a little older than him. Though his eyes have more lines around them than hers do, and his hair is more gray than her silver, that is less a product of age than being his father’s son. Kaguya, for all that she looks unmarked by the passage of time, speaks as though she’s lived through more battles than anyone in his lifetime. By now, he has learned her clan name, Ōtsutsuki, and knows that history books claim that the name has died out. He decides it doesn’t matter.
“I’d like to meet them someday,” Sakumo says, taking hold of her hand. “Have you ever married?”
Kaguya sits up and covers his hands with her own. Her fingers are warm and gentle, but when she speaks, her tone is stern. “Explain,” she demands.
With a sheepish chuckle, Sakumo turns his palm over and strokes Kaguya’s hand soothingly. Certainly, there is no blame to be laid for the frustration. He has been struggling just as much with shinobi techniques as she has been with the customs of samurai. “Well, usually marriage involves two individuals promising to live together permanently. Sometimes it’s recorded in writing as well.”
Sanguinely, Kaguya observes, “You are married to your summons.”
“No, no!” Sakumo says, dropping their interlocked hands to wave his own fervently. In protest, one strand of Kaguya’s hair reaches towards him and tugs Sakumo’s neck so that they are closer together, and places his hand on her cheek. He laughs, settling his fingers at her jaw. “Different kind of contract. I’ve never been married. It’s... building a future with someone. I’ve always hoped if I married someone, we’d be together for a long time.”
Kaguya’s grip on his wrist and neck grows looser, and soon she is close enough that they are nose-to-nose. “We will marry,” declares Kaguya plainly.
“Oh!” Sakumo’s heart stutters in his chest, which is unsurprising given how much blood is flooding his cheeks. “Yes, I’d like that.”
Her white eyes constrict in a way that he knows means she is looking behind him. Enthusiastically, she adds, “We will make a child.”
Sakumo clears his throat. “I haven’t—Well, I know—Ah...”
Kaguya smiles widely. “I will show you.”
--
As it turns out, Kaguya’s definition of a child is a bit different than Sakumo’s.
Notwithstanding the variations in how exactly children are brought into the world in his knowledge versus Kaguya’s revelations—the butterfly and worm are certainly a surprise, but he supposes the birds and bees have been mentioned—the form the child takes, a shining purple egg that Kaguya ties into a sling for him to carry, is also a new discovery.
“The baby,” Kaguya explains that first day, tapping the shell fondly.
Like Kaguya’s earlier visits, Sakumo suspects that the baby will follow their own schedule, so the egg is his constant companion for the months that follow. It sits with him in the kitchen as he cooks. It lays against his chest as he reads. It rolls behind him in his fields and scares off the birds that approach his crops, and earns the egg the nickname, “Kakashi.”
Although Kaguya is never gone for more than a day at a time during these months, Sakumo can see the changes in his wife’s face whenever she steps away from their home. Each time she appears from beyond the mountain, her face grows more weary. Time etches itself into her expression. Still, her tenderness towards Sakumo and Kakashi does not diminish.
It is why there is not a shred of doubt in his Sakumo’s heart when Kaguya returns home one night doing something he’s never seen her do previously: Running on foot.
He rises from the engawa, making sure Kakashi is strapped securely to his body before he rushes across the grass, barefoot, to meet Kaguya halfway. “What happened?” he asks, pulling her into his arms.
“I put them all to sleep,” Kaguya tells him, pressing closer. “And now they will put me to sleep.”
“Why?” Sakumo asks. Even he is not sure what he is asking.
Her grip on the two of them grows stronger. “The nursery will not hold without my help. When I am done, I can restore peace.”
As if in response to these words, the egg pips and five of the tiniest fingers Sakumo has ever seen reach out over the sling to grab onto a lock of Kaguya’s hair. “I don’t think the baby’s ready for you to leave.”
“No one can stay,” Kaguya says, placing her hand over Kakashi’s. She leans down to press her lips to those fingers and then disentangles them. “You and Kakashi will go too.”
“Where?” he asks.
“When,” she corrects, and splits the world open.
Kaguya’s third eye is wide and glassy, and when he follows her line of sight, Sakumo does not see the fields in front of his home, but instead a heavily forested area, with carved stone faces in the distance. He has never known so many buildings to be so close together, let alone in the shapes and sizes of these. A new bright, shining sphere lights up the sky so that the stars pale in comparison. Kaguya has cut the fabric of the air into something entirely new.
“We will see each other again,” Kaguya promises, pushing him forward.
When Sakumo wakes up, he has a child in his arms and the moon smiling down upon him.

Lavender Lightning
Chapter 1
Warnings: none
Chapter 2: link
"I'm sorry you didn't get to stick around for your particle accelerator thingy. Man, he really got you good, didn't he?" Iris commented sympathetically, gently removing Barry's broken glasses and applying an ice pack to the rapidly-forming bruise on his cheekbone.
Barry winced and muttered a thanks, looking something like a kicked puppy. Iris couldn't blame him; his sad, nerdy little dream had been completely ruined by the thief who'd grabbed her laptop. If she'd just held it a little more securely or, better yet, not brought the clunky thing at all and just brought a pen and notebook like her professor kept trying to drill into the class's heads, Barry wouldn't have chased after him and gotten the shit kicked out of him. It was really only luck that Detective Pretty Boy had been there to stop the thief from hurting Barry too badly and making off with Iris's bag and dissertation along with it.
"Are you sure you don't want me to take you to the hospital?" Iris checked, her brow creasing in worry.
Barry shook his head. "I'm fine, really. I think my ego and glasses took most of the damage." He joked halfheartedly.
Iris smiled softly and squeezed his arm. "Well, if you change your mind-"
Their conversation was abruptly interrupted by Linda Park's urgent voice from the small TV set in Barry's lab. "-they are now saying to evacuate the facility immediately-"
The TV cut out. At the same time, a deafening explosion lit up the sky alongside the lightning from a brewing storm, S.T.A.R. Labs a fiery orange landmark on the horizon just across the city. Iris rushed to close the skylight, grabbing the heavy chain with both hands as Barry powered down all his tech, anticipating a power surge.
The next moments happened in what felt like slow motion to Barry, time slowing to a crawl, each second feeling like an eternity. A bolt of lightning rocketed down from above them, striking the chain with a sound like a gunshot. Iris's whole body lit up, bathed in an ethereal luminescence like an angel for a few seconds before she was violently thrown backward, colliding with a shelf of fragile test tubes and beakers, glass and wood splintering beneath her as she fell, unmoving, to the floor.
"Iris!" Barry scrambled forward and reached for her but stopped just short of physically connecting with her, a small current of electricity crackling between them and making him recoil as he was shocked. "Oh god, Iris..." He fumbled frantically for his cell phone to call for emergency services, panic seizing in his chest every moment he didn't see her breathe, every moment he couldn't check her pulse. This couldn't be happening.
In the ensuing chaos, Barry found himself experiencing things as though he was an outsider, witnessing rather than enduring - a blur of flashing lights, urgent voices, and sterile hospital corridors that he couldn't keep track of and seemed to stretch into infinity. Barry couldn't have told you when the paramedics arrived nor when he and Joe had made their way to the hospital.
All he knew was that every time Iris flatlined on the table, he felt like his heart stopped, too.

You often talk about enjoying vegetables, so I hope you might be able to help me with something. I'm trying to add more veggies into my diet, but I'm not a big fan of raw vegetables so I was wondering if you had suggestions of how to prepare vegetables/dishes that are veggie heavy? So far I've been enjoying roasting broccoli and cauliflower in the oven with some olive oil, salt and pepper.
Also you genuinely seem like a cool, down to earth person. I hope you have a good day/night!
Mixing it in pasta and noodles are awesome!! I like to heat up a big deep frying pan to about a 6 on my range top dial with a little grapeseed oil, then sear some cut up meat and add vegetables to it. Start with the tough veggies first, carrots, celery... summer squash isn't tough, but it has a lot of moisture to release to keep it from being slimy. After a minute or two I add a spoonful or two of Lao Gan Ma chili bean or chili crunch oil I try and use enough that you get the umami flavor without making it spicy.
If I'm making pasta, I've started a pot of water boiling at the same time as I start frying my meat and chopping my vegetables. I add paprika, cumin, whatever herbs I have laying around, worchestershire sauce, and either whatever beer cider or wine we have laying around, or broth. Add the noodles to the water when it boils and start a timer for them. Generally, once the timer has about 3-5 minutes left, I throw a handful of flour I'm and mix it, then whatever delicate vegetables we have laying around, usually tomatoes and peppers, nasturtium leaf, kale... that kind of thing. Drain the pasta when the timer goes off and mix the noodles with the contents of the frying pan. Food time!
If you don't want to do pasta, you can also leave out the broth and crack like 5 or 6 eggs into the pan instead and make a sort of frittata or scramble.
If I'm making noodles, I usually add ginger and garlic to the pan, then the tough vegetables. Then I turn on my kettle and pour it over a bunch of bean threads and let them soften while I add soy sauce, rice wine, and broth to the pan, then add the delicate vegetables, I use baby bok choi here along with the other delicate vegetables I added to pasta. Now I toss the half soft noodles into the pan with the veggies and cook it till the bean threads soak up all the liquid.
Sometimes I serve veggies cooked like this over rice instead of bean threads, then put tofu cooked with a Teriyaki glaze, fried pork belly, or fried eggs on top.
I also put sweet corn in the oven at 425 degrees for 20 minutes, shucked and wrapped in foil with nondairy butter and salt. Sweet potatoes can also be wrapped in foil and cooked at 425 for an hour, I don't like the texture but my husband eats them a lot dipped in sweet chili sauce.
I kind of base my regular weeknight dinners off of whatever veggies we have kicking around the fridge or garden and whatever protein we have. Sometimes it's tofu, sometimes it's polish sausage.

Why the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Tale Type 425A is my favorite
Classified by Uther as "The Search for the Lost Husband" (AKA "The Animal Bridegroom," AKA "Beauty and the Beast")
So -- in these stories (at least, the ones I've read so far), the woman is betrothed (or given) to a man/prince under an enchantment, breaks a taboo related to the magic (or breaks a promise that's harder to keep than she thought), and then has to go on an epic journey to rescue him -- sometimes, literally to the ends of the Earth.
While I also love fairy tales where the protagonist is a Cinnamon Role who is given plot armor and is never in the wrong morally, the heroines of tale types 425 (sub-variants go at least to 'M'), are allowed to make poor choices and fail before they succeed in a particularly badass way.
And this, in turn, proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the protagonist has autonomy within the narrative, and isn't just carried along by "Fate" or other forces beyond their control.
Personal freedom must include the freedom to fail, and the freedom to be wrong.

Hi. This blog looks cool. How do I get into the bat family? I've looked at some stuff online but I didn't really understand and read some of the Wayne family adventures but I don't really know what order I should read the comics into.
Thanks @thisisbjustmehyperfixating! That really depends on what era/continuity you're intrtested in. There are a few distict different ones (although they do all tie together to some degree). I mostly read New Earth/Post-Crisis era stuff. Wayne Family Adventures isn't a good jumping on point for the comics as it seems geared more toward fandom fans than comic fans and doesn't seem to follow any canon continuity/characterization, from what I've seen.
There's a four part story called Batman: Year Three (Batman issues #436-439), which I think is a good jumping on point for New Earth bat family, as it introduces Dick/Robin while also showing some of Bruce's early Bat career.
Batman: The Cult is a really interesting story wherein Batman loses before the big win and Jason (as Robin) picks up the slack. Then, Batman #424 & #425 showcases Bruce & Jason's issues that lead to Batman: A Death in the Family (Batman #426-429).
The Mud Pack story (Detective Comics #604-607) showcases Bruce's headspace after Jason's death well and is a good read before Tim's introduction, I think.
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman: #140-142 & The New Titans #60 &61) introduces Tim and really kicks off the bat family as it's generally known today.
Batman Annual #13 (1989) shows how Alfred ended up helping to shape Batman and why he stayed after Bruce started his crusade. It also shows that JASON was in fact the first Robin to wear pants and has some nice moments with Babs & Commissioner Gordon.
Batman #456 & 457 really kicks off Tim's Robin run. His first three mini series introduce a lot of great characters (I personally love Huntress) and concepts, too. They're collected in the trades Robin: Tragedy & Triumph and Robin: A Hero Reborn. The latter also has Batman #456 & 457 in it, so it's a good deal.
I'm personally a big fan of Batman: Dark Victory and Batman: Haunted Knight. I just love the way the Rogues are used in those stories.
Nightwing: Alfred's Return is a good story that focuses on those two named characters without Batman's immediate presence.
Batman: Son of the Demon (1987) showcases the relationship between Bruce and Talia nicely, gives some much needed history on her, and includes the original story of how they had a child together.
Batgirl #1-6 (2000) are packed full of information on Cassndra; they cover her background with David Cain, her language barrier, her fighting prowless and reason for fighting, as well as showing her relationships with Babs and Bruce.
I cannot reccomend the first 20-30 issues of Batman: Gotham Knights (2000) enough for bat family content. Several of the early issues include journal enteries or letters written by members of the family to showcase their feelings/relationships in a way they wouldn't otherwise express them. The story with Hugo Strange is peak Dick & Tim bat brother bonding. The issue with Cassandra really shows how alike she and Bruce are. You have issues that showcase Babs' relatipnship with some of the bats and ones that cover the Dick & Slade weirdness.
Red Hood: The Lost Days and Batman: Death and the Maidens take place before Batman: Under the Red Hood and I feel are really needed to understand Jason and Talia's side of the story, as UtRH is (understandably, since the story was first published in the Batman ongoing) very Batman focused.
I'm going to leave that here for now as it's getting a bit long and mobile is being a pain. Hopefully that gives you an idea of where to start looking for the stuff you see here on my blog. ^_^

Hubble detects celestial 'string of pearls' star clusters in galaxy collisions
When spectacular cosmic events such as galaxy collisions occur, it sets off a reaction to form new stars, and possibly new planets that otherwise would not have formed. The gravitational pull that forces the collisions between these galaxies creates tidal tails—the long thin region of stars and interstellar gas.
The Hubble Space Telescope's vision is so sharp that it can see clusters of newborn stars strung along these tidal tails. They form when knots of gas gravitationally collapse to create about 1 million newborn stars per cluster.
Specifically, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has homed in on 12 interacting galaxies that have long, tadpole-like tidal tails of gas, dust and a plethora of stars. Hubble's exquisite sharpness and sensitivity to ultraviolet light have uncovered 425 clusters of newborn stars along these tails, looking like strings of holiday lights.
Each cluster contains as many as 1 million blue, newborn stars.
Clusters in tidal tails have been known about for decades. When galaxies interact, gravitational tidal forces pull out long streamers of gas and dust. Two popular examples are the Antennae and Mice galaxies with their long, narrow, finger-like projections.
In a study recently published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society astronomers used the near-infrared capabilities of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to study tidal tail clusters and determine their ages and masses, along with properties of the merging galaxies.
Michael Rodruck of Randolph-Macon College is the lead author of this study with co-authors including Arizona State University scientists Sanchayeeta Borthakur and Karen Knierman of the School of Earth and Space Exploration.
A team of astronomers used a combination of new observations and archival data to get ages and masses of tidal tail star clusters. They found that these clusters are very young—only 10 million years old. And they seem to be forming at the same rate along tails stretching for thousands of light-years.
"These observations tell us how stars form and what regulates those processes. This knowledge is critical in understanding how stars in our own galaxy were formed," said Associate Professor Sanchayeeta Borthakur, who is an observational astronomer specializing in extragalactic astronomy at ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration.
The tails look like they are taking a galaxy's spiral arm and stretching it out into space. The exterior part of the arm gets pulled like taffy from the gravitational tug-of-war between a pair of interacting galaxies.
Before the mergers, the galaxies were rich in dusty clouds of molecular hydrogen that simply may have remained inert. But the clouds got jostled and bumped into each other during the encounters. This compressed the hydrogen to the point where it precipitated a firestorm of star birth.
The fate of these strung-out star clusters is uncertain. They may stay gravitationally intact and evolve into globular star clusters—like those that orbit outside the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Or they may disperse to form a halo of stars around their host galaxy, or get cast off to become wandering intergalactic stars.
"It's so exciting to present the culmination of over two decades of work on star clusters in tidal tails using data from different eras of Hubble together with that from other telescopes," Assistant Teaching Professor Karen Knierman said. "I started working on this project as an undergraduate at Penn State in 1999, and some of that same data and results are used here. We got additional data from a Hubble program I was (principal investigator) for when I came to ASU in 2007."
This string-of-pearls star formation may have been more common in the early universe when galaxies collided with each other more frequently. These nearby galaxies observed by Hubble are a proxy for what happened long ago, and therefore allow us to look into the distant past.
"It's a surprise to see lots of the young objects in the tails. It tells us a lot about cluster formation efficiency," Rodruck said. "With tidal tails, you will build up new generations of stars that otherwise might not have existed."
IMAGE....Galaxy AM 1054-325 has been distorted into an S-shape from a normal pancake-like spiral shape by the gravitational pull of a neighboring galaxy, seen in this Hubble Space Telescope image. A consequence of this is that newborn clusters of stars form along a stretched-out tidal tail for thousands of light-years, resembling a string of pearls. They form when knots of gas gravitationally collapse to create about 1 million newborn stars per cluster. Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, Jayanne English (University of Manitoba)
