Charismatic and arrogant, N has already made a name for themselves in the surfing community. After placing in the final five in the last UTT, they’ve been chosen as a wildcard this time around. Really, you don’t know all that much about N, considering you’ve never even met them, but from your limited research (e.g: watching interviews on YouTube) you can tell they’re.. a bit of a flirt. It’s hard to tell if a facade or not; but you don’t really want to find out, either.

Remember that John is, in the theology of the Nine Houses, the "God who became man and man who became God." It's never entirely explained what this means to them, but it's clearly intended to riff on Jesus, the 'Word made flesh' (John 1:14), "born in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7).

But here's the thing if you're going to be a Catholic-flavoured god: Catholicism has some quite specific terminology for leveling up in terms of heavenly power.

Jesus, who is God, goes up to heaven after the resurrection. This is described as his "ascension" - it's an active process. He is ascending, going to his heavenly throne. He can do that, because he's God. He *is* the rules of the universe and metaphysics. If he wants to fly up into the sky and transcend into another dimension, he can do that, because he's God.

But there are three other people who are understood to have gone up to heaven bodily: Jesus' mum Mary, and the prophets Elijah and Enoch - for all three of them, this is described as their "assumption": it's a passive process, which they aren't doing under their own steam, it's being done by God. In art, this has historically been depicted by showing them being propelled skywards by a writhing mass of cherubs.

So let's get back to Jod.

You know, the man who became god, etc etc etc? The one who resurrected his Lyctors who then "spread his assumption across the blackness of space"?

Either John wasn't paying quite enough attention when going through Catholicism for Dummies or Teacher is being a bit sly here.

So this is a nod, right at the beginning, to the fact that John isn't actually the metaphysical power of the universe that he claims to be.

Wade smiles as he approaches the door to their apartment. Their home sat above a sub shop and was next to a little convenience store. He thought it was perfect for them; Logan could get booze whenever he wanted from the convenience store, and Wade could get his candies and other snacks, and the sub shop had a fairly decent selection of sandwiches, salads and even soup so if they didn't feel like cooking, there was always that option. Wade unlocked the door quickly, smiling excitedly as he lead Logan up the steps, hand squeezing the other's hand gently as they stood in front of their apartment door, tucked away in a corner towards the back. "Alright, baby. This is our place. 's nothing fancy or impressive, but I think we'd be able to call it home. 'n I've got one more surprise for you." Wade unlocked the door quietly before pushing it open and stepping in.

It really was a studio apartment, but Wade had spent an entire day making it seem mostly tolerable. Tucked away in the farthest corner was their 'bedroom', which Wade had hung curtains from the ceiling to divide up the space, and in front of the curtains, he had lined some bookshelves to create a "wall" of sorts. There wasn't any books for the bookshelves, but he figured Logan could help him pick up some books. The living area was right next to the bedroom, the sofa sitting against a brick wall and a television sitting on the opposite end on a little folding table he had picked up on the side of the road. The kitchen and dining area were self-explanatory, but it was home. He even added a few pieces of art. One was a large canvas of the Wolverine Cowl that looked like it had been spray painted, complete with dripping paint, and then over the cowl was "I love Logan Howlett" spray painted in bright red paint. That wasn't the surprise though. Logan's surprise was sitting on the little breakfast bar. Two small cupcakes, slightly lopsided and sad looking, but it looked like Wade tried his best. The frosting was piped on horribly, but Wade never was much of an artist. Next to the cupcakes was a fifth of Elijah Craig whiskey, and a box wrapped in newspaper ads (because Wade forgot to get wrapping paper and just picked some newspapers out of the trash).

"Happy birthday, Lo. You don't look a day over 46." Wade grinned, leaning over to kiss Logan's cheek.

Synopsis: so its basically like the idea of "survival of the fittest" or like, artificial selection right? so these people set up this place called the Life Management Bureau (LMB for short) and literally plan everyone's lives for them. so like, the characters train and study their whole lives and try to be perfect and the year before they turn 19 they meet up with an agent who will test and study them to help select the rest of their lives. and main character, my boy Elijah Mooring, is not perfect, he sure as fucking isn't straight like they want him to be, and I -just might- give him autism. anyways, he meets this guy called Hunter for his evaluation and hunter is *surprise* also not perfect!!! and he is one of the founders of the infamous and anonymous SSR (the six String rebellion) and he invites Eli to join. its called that because all recreational activities like art, music, performance, and shit are straight up BANNED so all these rebellion people play and do art and shit and straight up rebel. I'm gonna leave it there cuz I don't wanna spoil much but YUH jrwkhbf

Nineteen. We only get nineteen years. For what? To find ourselves before they take it all away from us. We only get nineteen years to screw up, nineteen years to make or break friendships, and nineteen years until we need to perfect ourselves before they do it for us.

Others my age are studying, refining themselves. Me, I’m sitting in the springs. It calms me, and I shouldn’t have to give that up. Selection day is seven months away. I don’t need to be perfect yet. I’d rather remain imperfect. The waters are restless today, flowing by without vigilance or care. It’s fall, so leaves pass me by as they crumple into bits of orange and brown stars among a silky black stream. 

“Eli?” my mother calls out. “Eli, are you out here again? Her face is small with rounded cheekbones and sharp black hair that falls gently to her shoulders in a stark contrast to her sharp, crystal blue eyes. She stands tall, but she is nothing compared to my father, a giant of a being. She holds the clipboard with a firm grip and a scowl and looks at me curiously. “What are you doing out here?”

I shiver, the cold finally hitting my wet skin. Water drips placidly as I stand in the cool breeze drying off. My singular crystal eye matches hers but the dark brown of the other looks out of place. A trait from my father. “I don’t need to explain why i’m out here if you already know,” I huffed out in a breath. “I need a damn break from him.” I gesture vaguely towards the house.

“I know you dislike your father but there’s nothing you can do until spring.” She finds a place to sit frigidly on a rock adjacent to mine and gives me a glassy stare. She chooses her words carefully like someone disarming a bomb, careful to never let me explode. It doesn’t work. “Dislike?,” I shout. “I’d use a much stronger word than dislike, mom. I hate him.” I’m off my rock now, pacing between the space of the stream and the rock my mother rests on.

  The first finished and personal Android created by Elijah Kamski, the first in the RK Line, Markus is a very special Android to Elijah that despite appearances he actually genuinely cares about. Markus is more than an Android, more than just the first RK Unit, he is a personalized special Android that Elijah put his soul into creating. Much like he did Chloe, though on an entirely different level as Markus was made for someone that Elijah loves.

  Throughout his entire career Elijah could count on one hand the amount of people he cared about; Amanda, Chloe, and Carl Manfred (select verses: Gavin). One he lost, one an Android, and the other a friend that he was dangerously very close to losing. With Amanda gone the fear of losing that one person who still cared about him, who he still loved, was terrifying. Carl nearly died in a car accident and then afterward had given up. No will to live, no desire to continue on, and a human care taker that couldn’t give a single damn about him.

  Carl was family to Elijah, he was his best friend, he was someone that supported and understood Elijah on a level that no one else did. The fact that he formed that connection with someone, with another human, mattered to him on a level that was impossible to explain to someone who wasn’t them. Carl understood Elijah, saw the dream that he painted despite it not being something he overly cared for. He was straight forward with Elijah, called him out on his bullshit, set the world straight for him and defended him when needed.

  The love was mutual and it was a bond Elijah knew he would never get to create again with another person. So when he threaded that line of nearly losing him, the world tilted on an axis and Elijah drew up the plans for the RK unit, at the time simply dubbed the CARL LIFELINE. Though at the beginning he had no true image in mind for Markus, Elijah started on the base program that he wanted to be the center of the focus for the Android he was creating.

  A care program.

  Not a program to take care of Carl’s base needs or his special ones from the accident, it was a program that when read between the lines could be dubbed a Heart Program. The base of the program was built on Elijah’s love for Carl, everything that he felt for the man. He wanted the Android that he created for his friend to care for Carl on a level that he himself did. Despite the claim that Androids were incapable of ‘love’ Elijah wanted Markus to love Carl from the very beginning of his existence. And if you asked him; Markus did.

  Markus’ care program would be the first of it’s kind and the only one to exist, he would never upload it into another Android and he would never give the program information out to anyone. It would be a program unique to Markus and that would be it. Not even CyebrLife would manage to rip it from his hands despite everything else they copied to make Connor.

  From there Elijah would go through old art that Carl had drawn for Elijah, Android model types that existed from when they were working on Chloe’s image, and through those he’d piece together what he wanted Markus to look like. And life would be created from Carl’s images art, giving Markus a unique look that would connect him to not only Elijah his creator but Carl the person he was created for. A unique bond between the two of them just like the unique Android he was designed to be.

  Markus represents a part of Elijah that he never shows to the world, a depth of care for something that no one believes the Creator of Androids capable of for another human being. As an Android built on Elijah’s love he cares for Markus beyond the typical for any of his Androids. Even if Markus himself doesn’t believe it or anyone else for that matter, Elijah would go to the ends of the Earth for him.

  He is proud of Markus, for everything that he managed to accomplish and his strong belief in a world that did everything it could to tear them down. He knows that strength, he’s seen it in Carl, and it brings warmth to the creator of Androids that the two of them had such a profound influence on each other. More than he could have ever hoped for. And, even if it was his programming (though Elijah believes it more than that), he will eternally be grateful for the amount of love and care Markus has and has done for Carl.

Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) and The New Jersey Play Lab (NJPL), in partnership with the Department of Theatre and Dance's BA Theatre Studies Program at Montclair State University, have announced the collective of playwrights selected for participation in the inaugural year of The Garden State New Play Festival (GSNPL).

As artistic institutions in a rapidly changing world, it is incumbent upon us to constantly question whether our work is truly being created, developed, and produced in service of our community, and assess whether or not our work is reaching audiences in a meaningful, impactful manner.

The GSNPF was conceived around a new strategy of blending community and artistic development in which community members are given access to create art not just consume art, resulting in an understanding and celebration of the opportunity for individual and collective growth inherent in the process of new play development.

The Collective of Playwrights participating in the GSNPF include both emerging and early career playwrights, Jersey City Community Members working in the non-profit and advocacy sector, International Artists both from abroad and from our local immigrant communities, college students, and high school students. Each of their plays focuses around an aspect of social justice.

The Garden State New Play Festival will take place on May 1st-4th and 8th-11th, 2025 at Jersey City Theatre Center.

Over the course of the six months leading up to the Festival, each writer will embark on an individualized dramaturgical track to further develop their play for presentation at the Festival. Woven into each track will be an interactive forum with a local community group or organization selected according to the lens of social justice through which the play has been conceived.

Concurrently to the individualized play development tracks, a schedule of workshops, exchanges, classroom visits, play readings, and public events, will take place between November and May, and be open to all Festival participants, including writers, actors, dramaturgs, directors, and community leaders.

The goal is that by the time the Festival itself opens, hundreds of artists and community members will have collaborated and contributed to this process of new play development, and personally experienced the power of the written word for the stage.

The GSNPF offers a new model for a new play festival that brings together artists of all career levels without barriers of hierarchy, and blurs the lines between artist and audience, all while respecting the integrity of each individual artist's craft and experience. This model frames the art of playmaking as a means of expression and advocacy, and as a tool for deeper understanding of self and one's community, and dismantles barriers to producing full productions of new plays by cultivating a vibrant ecosystem that values and champions the power of playmaking.

Fantasia Festival Announces Second Wave of 2024 Titles

The Fantasia International Film Festival will celebrate its upcoming 28th edition with an electrifying program of screenings, workshops, and launch events running from July 18 through August 4, 2024, returning yet again at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens and events at Montréal’s Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinéma du Musée.
