🌹 L'opera, intitolata "AI is Real", è stata creata dall'artista Nuro.

i’m so obsessed with the fact that keiichi formed the most powerful parasocial relationship with satoshi in not just one arc but two and he was making epic gay delusions about some guy he’s never even fucking met and kinning him hard while committing murder for his little sister the same way he believes the guy himself did a year ago (and he was right!) they are truly the yaoi that was always meant to be

『Wakana 5th Anniversary “Prologue” ~Premium Online Live~』 Commentary
An exclusive streaming event was held for fan club members to celebrate Wakana’s 5th anniversary as a solo artist. She was joined by Hirotaka Sakurada on piano. Instagram post by Wakana | Tweet by Wakana
‖Event details “Wakana 5th Anniversary “Prologue” ~Premium Online Live~” Date: February 6, 2024 Time: 18:30~ Starring: Wakana, Hirotaka Sakurada (Piano)
Live Commentary Ohhhh, what a lovely throwback to see Wakana in her 1st album dress. She looks beautiful😍
1.揺れる春 (Yureru Haru): Surprised by how much I like Wakana's high notes here. Usually I am not a huge fan. Very solid performance. 2.翼 (Tsubasa): Saku-chan's piano arrangement is lovely and Wakana is slaying as she always does with this song. MC: Pleasantly surprised to see her taking a longer break to talk to us. I feared this would be a somewhat rushed event with just a couple songs being performed. She is even reading through some of the comments. 3.愛の花 (Ai no Hana): *sobs* So happy to hear this again. It's one of my all-time favourites. Wa's voice was a bit shaky but she knocked it out of the park at the end. The oooh part killed me. Goosebumps all over. 4.アキノサクラ (Aki no Sakura): Hearing it live always makes me appreciate the song a bit more. Very nice! MC 5.オレンジ (Orange): The bridge was absolutely perfect. MC: Yay, we are gettng a Kalafina cover, honestly did not expect that. Wakana says she has a lot of fond memories of the recording when the three of them and Saku-chan all got together at the studio to record their parts. 6. 春を待つ (Haru wo Matsu): Waahhhh, this was even better than her performance from the "magic moment" live 7.標 (Shirushi): Always beautiful, especially in such an intimate setting. Her vocals are flawless here. MC: Now I need to get back to work so I can't continue watching. Will have to get back to this later. Thank God we are getting an archived version.TBC~ 8.金木犀 (Kinmokusei): First "Ai no Hana" and now "Kinmokusei"! Two of my faves. Unfortunately, this performance is a bit too shaky for me T_T Probably the weakest of this event, at least in my opinion. 9.Flag: Awwww, it's not a Wakana live without her screwing up some lyrics XD She handles it well though. She always sounds so epic at the end of this song. MC 10.magic moment: Never been a big fan of the song but this is a precious performance. The way she just couldn't figure out that final line and had to give it two tries. Poor baby!! She's so embarrassed. MC 11.そのさきへ (Sono Saki e): I kinda wish she had performed Toki wo Koeru Yoru ni (時を越える夜に) instead of this but oh well.
『Wakana 5th Anniversary Live』 Announced!
To commemorate the 5th Anniversary of Wakana's solo debut, a special band live will be held for the first time in 3 years! Once again, Wakana will be joined by Satoshi Takebe to deliver a unique live performance together with other musicians. Please look forward to it!
Title: “Wakana 5th Anniversary Live (tentative)” Date: May 12, 2024 Venue: I'M A SHOW (capacity: 398 seats) Starring: Wakana, Satoshi Takebe (Music Director/Piano), etc.

Trigun MB Thoughts Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thoughts on Trigun: The Lost Plant & The Denizens of the Sand Planet under the cut!
Trigun: The Lost Plant by Boichi
Tumblr media
So we meet Veronica Tusbasa, on a journey because a voice of a plant
Tumblr media
Then here’s Vash and oh…..oh my 😳
Tumblr media
But then there’s this chaos
Tumblr media
so Vash distracted them
Tumblr media
Veronica somehow was able to jump down into the canyon safely and found a plant that’s still alive
Tumblr media
I’m honestly confused at what this plant was explaining about but it seemed like physics stuff and a bunch of negative mass from somewhere became a child in her belly ┐(゚ ~゚ )┌
Tumblr media
This is my favorite part cuz the plant was pissed
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, so the plant wants Vash to shoot her and her child cuz if the child gets born then the planet will go boom. But nah, Vash ain’t letting that happen ヽ( ▼∀▼)ノ
Tumblr media
Okay can we take a moment to appreciate how Vash was drawn in this style? Like he looks more dark and scary and cool (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄) (that’s probably cuz the artstyle is more realistic but still)
Tumblr media
PSHEW PSHEW PSHEW PSHEW PSHEW PSHEW
Tumblr media
Vash saved the plant and her child from dying. I’m guessing he made a portal for the child to go through??? (゚ ペ)
Tumblr media
And so Veronica bids Vash farewell (。•́︿•̀。)
Final thoughts: What interested me the most is this takes place 200 years after the fall, but in the Trigun manga series it takes place around 150 years after the fall. So Vash still being around is pretty tragic cuz Meryl, Milly, Razlo and the others we met most likely dead (;へ:)(Maybe the Ship 3 people and the Earth ships people are still alive because of cyro-sleep?) Is Vash cursed to wander the planet for all eternity? (●︿●) Also I’m weirded out by Veronica’s weird angles of her butt ಠ_ಠ
Tumblr media
Divider by @cafekitsune
The Denizens of the Sand Planet by Satoshi Mizukami
Tumblr media
So there’s this kid named Tran and there’s his mom
Tumblr media
His mom is this girl (I know it's weird but wait for it) and the worms are friendly with her
Tumblr media
Tran and his mom are on a journey to decide if the humans should live or die
Tumblr media
Then they meet this glasses dude who’s a sandworm researcher and find sandworms to be pretty epic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girl’s actually Zazie and they decided to raise Tran when they found him (Tran’s an independent plant!)
Tumblr media
Tran and Zazie continued their journey but with the researcher on their side
Tumblr media
But after that they decided to destroy humanity. Tran was about to kill the researcher but Zazie stopped him cuz they remember that the researcher called them beautiful (aaaaaaaw (´∀` ))
Tumblr media
Y’all this is so wholesome!! (*≧∀≦*)
Tumblr media
In the end, they built a town called Worm City where sandworm researchers and sandworms live together in peace. There’s a photo of the glasses dude, grown-up Tran and…grown-up Zazie? Did the body they were in physically grew or they changed a different host?? (ー_ーゞ
Final thoughts: This also seems to take place a long time after the end of TriMax. I also like the fact that Zazie just found Tran and decided to raise him, that’s so cute! (〃 ̄ω ̄〃) Maybe Zazie was just wandering around and found a newborn on the bottom of a plant bulb and was like “Woah, an independent plant! We’ll raise it!”. Tbh they don’t seem like the type that would wanna raise a kid but maybe a plant kid piques their interest. I really like the idea of a town where sandworm researchers and sandworms coexist, Vash would love to visit! :D

hey that pokemon 2000 gifset + your jn dub analysis made me think about the pokemon 2000 dub - I've only seen it subbed once (compared to the hundred times I watched it dubbed as a child) so I could be misremembering, but didn't the dub completely change the themes of the movie with the chosen one ash thing?
i actually haven’t watched the sub nearly as many as times as the dub either :p but i have read extensively about this topic bc it’s personally my favourite pokemon movie and yes! the first and second pokemon movies are both victim to this (like mewtwo’s epic speech we all love so much at the end of the first movie…being a complete fabrication by the dub team :p you gotta give those writers credit - they were VERY good at what they did), largely i’m guessing due to cultural values and expectations. since they were trying to sell the anime to an american audience, not a japanese one.
tangentially, i will say i also think that’s the root of this like…subtle distinction some people have between the characters “ash” and “satoshi.” i don’t differentiate them in any big way myself because fundamentally they still are very much the same, but it is true that in japanese, ash has somewhat different mannerisms and responds differently to events at times, especially in the early anime when it was so much easier to get away with making big changes for…a big assortment of reasons haha.
in THIS movie in particular, some of those things are like…well. the prophecy is probably the most obvious change. the dub team rewrote it to include the chosen one reference, which works great because of the word play on ash’s name. in japanese, it just says “an exceptional trainer will appear to help calm the wrath of the gods.” ash’s response to this is more mild trepidation than outright fear. he doesn’t hesitate like he does in the dub. and tbh? both reactions make perfect sense for his character in my opinion.
in japanese, his concern is more "do you really think i can fit that role?" this...tracks pretty well with his character development by this point. like yeah he said he could win the indigo league, but he's also thinking about dropping out after gary loses; it's that little grain of insecurity he has, which he's normally good at covering up with arrogance (a lot of which is also very genuine, don't get me wrong). but he sees the opportunity to help and he takes it. that's just...what ash does.
in english, though, the prophecy is pretty clearly about him. there's no one else it could be. it has to be him. and he...doesn't like that? that scares him. which, fair. anyone would be terrified by being singled out like that. it's also so much...not ash's thing, even at this point in the series. his character development is about embracing having to work hard to do well. to keep trying until you get it right, no matter how many times you get it wrong. the idea of being a "chosen one" completely robs him of his ability to be so single-minded about what he wants his destiny to be that it manifests as pre-determined; it just...pre-determines it for him, if that makes sense. lol.
the thesis of the japanese version of the film is that no one person or pokemon can stand on their own. everyone needs help. it's about harmonizing with each other and with nature. about letting others help you, and helping them in turn. the english version rewrites that into a story about power and destiny. the title alone says it all, right? it's called "the power of one" - no reference to lugia, no reference to the birds. in japan, the title is about the revelation (or "birth") of lugia.
westerners love a good chosen one story, so this was a really good choice by the dub team in that respect. i mean, it's a narrative that's stuck really well. fandom loves chosen one ash! in general, western fanbases are really into this narrative. it's everywhere. and there's a lot that goes into that, culturally, and especially religiously, historically, etc. so at the end of the day, i don't think the change is so much about conflicting ideas about collectivism and individualism. it's more about goals and ideals, on a personal level.
let me say again for the 273456784th time, i love that they resolved ash's story by having him realize that the goal he's really been striving for all this time is to meet and befriend pokemon. to learn from them. to earn their trust. it's like...he did the thing that everyone else thought represented his goal, maybe even himself included, only to realize that his dream was never about the end of it anyway. it was about everything he learnt and everyone he met along the way. (i also suspect nobody writing in 1997 knew that that would be the ultimate resolution, either. but it makes sense in the entire context. it's kind of a nice irony, even. to only figure it out after writing the story :p)
and i think this little distinction is important to that goal! it's his whole character! which is why even though i too love chosen one characters, i don't necessarily think of ash as one. because even if he is, his whole Thing is that he wants to try. a lot of the chosen one narrative is about characters being reluctant to be used for a "greater good," or about them collapsing under that pressure. ash doesn't really have that. he does what he thinks is right because he...thinks it's right. sometimes, sure, others have to push him into it a bit, but usually they're actually pushing the other way - it's too dangerous, you're going to get hurt, etc. and to me, i don't know - thinking of times he's died, or nearly died, and some legendary or mythical pokemon has saved him at the last minute...i don't think that has to mean he's special in a cosmic sort of way. i think it just means he's special to them. that he did something for them, or for someone else they had come to care for (thinking manaphy responding to may's emotions, not just to the fact that ash was drowning, or in mpm ash convincing latios to trust him because of their mutual desire to save latias, etc.), and so they want to help him. which is completely opposite to the typical chosen one narrative, i think? because he doesn't do those things out of obligation...he does them because he thinks he can become a better trainer by doing them, and he wants to do that. and well. he did do that.
anyway my tl;dr here is YES they changed the theme a lot haha, but i find it fun that they also changed the characters’ responses to that theme. funnily that’s…kind of also what fanfiction writers do all the time, lmao, but that’s a whole other conversation.

JUST OVER A DECADE AGO, Bitcoin appeared to many of its adherents to be the crypto-anarchist holy grail: truly private digital cash for the Internet.
Satoshi Nakamoto, the cryptocurrency’s mysterious and unidentifiable inventor, had stated in an email introducing Bitcoin that “participants can be anonymous.” And the Silk Road dark-web drug market seemed like living proof of that potential, enabling the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal drugs and other contraband for bitcoin while flaunting its impunity from law enforcement.
This is the story of the revelation in late 2013 that Bitcoin was, in fact, the opposite of untraceable—that its blockchain would actually allow researchers, tech companies, and law enforcement to trace and identify users with even more transparency than the existing financial system. That discovery would upend the world of cybercrime. Bitcoin tracing would, over the next few years, solve the mystery of the theft of a half-billion dollar stash of bitcoins from the world’s first crypto exchange, help enable the biggest dark-web drug market takedown in history, lead to the arrest of hundreds of pedophiles around the world in the bust of the dark web’s largest child sexual abuse video site, and result in the first-, second-, and third-biggest law enforcement monetary seizures in the history of the US Justice Department.
That 180-degree flip in the world’s understanding of cryptocurrency’s privacy properties, and the epic game of cat-and-mouse that followed, is the larger saga that unfolds in the book Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency, out this week in paperback.
All of it began with the work of a young, puzzle-loving mathematician named Sarah Meiklejohn, the first researcher to pull out traceable patterns in the apparent noise of Bitcoin’s blockchain. This excerpt from Tracers in the Dark reveals how Meiklejohn came to the discoveries that would launch that new era of crypto criminal justice.
Excerpt is at the link. This is a fascinating read.

I wonder how this place would look in Scarlet...
Tumblr media
The technology in this world is incredible.
Tumblr media
If only this game had similar mechanics to Pokémon Legends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s not what you say, and you know it.
Tumblr media
You’re telling me I can’t catch the Pokémon in a battle like this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, it happened earlier last year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If only there was someone out there who could give me the Scarlet book...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t. (Nemona’s dad could use a few suggestions for his business.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Miraidon IS a special edition Cyclizar!
Tumblr media
It seems that these labs are in a set order. I thought I could visit the labs in any order I wanted. Considering this game is open and everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something’s off about Turo...
Tumblr media
Too late!
Tumblr media
The power of teamwork cliche.
Tumblr media
I thought this place would’ve been more bigger...
Tumblr media
Obviously.
Tumblr media
Of COURSE he keeps his Miraidon in a Master Ball. (Then again, it DOES suit Miraidon very well.)
Tumblr media
In that case, I’m glad I buddied up with this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If AI were to be put into the story of a Pokémon game, I would’ve expected there to be an AI Pokémon. (Or would that just be Porygon?)
Tumblr media
Never would I hear that the country’s leading researcher died in a Pokémon game.
Tumblr media
Yeah! I thought I’d have to use Thief on a bunch of Pokémon to get one of these!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s what you think.
Tumblr media
Crush the dreams of an innocent man to save the world? Sounds fine by me.
Tumblr media
I was expecting something more spacious.
Tumblr media
Another missed opportunity in this game is not designing the pedestal to look like a Switch Lite. (So the books could act as the cartridges.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of COURSE these types of things can never go easy...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, did he capture himself? (I thought he would’ve given me Miraidon so that I could fight against the Pokémon from the other version.)
Tumblr media
Don’t make an Undertale joke.  Don’t make an Undertale joke.  Don’t make an Undertale joke. (I love how they fancied the text up when it comes to the AI.)
Tumblr media
That has to be the most epic Poké Ball throw I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would’ve learned the truth sooner or later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You mean, it’s not over yet?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And THAT’S why you should always carry a Pokémon outside of their Poké Ball.
Tumblr media
HURRY, GET AWAY!
Tumblr media
So NOW I can send him in?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s about time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This must’ve been a very tearjerking scene for some people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guess we’re going that way then.
Tumblr media
You should be glad that the image above this text isn’t a video. Because that would mean I’d have to face legal action. However, I will say that I knew this song would play during the credits. And as promised, I muted the volume while it played out.
Tumblr media
Yeah, as if a group of people actually tested these games and thought they were okay for release.
Tumblr media
Hopefully, those patches were the last few things the model quality assurance team had to work on.
Tumblr media
For those of you who think Satoshi Tajiri didn’t want stuff like this to happen, just remember that he’s been serving as executive producer for the past 2 decades. And unlike a lot of pompous people on Twitter, he’s a reserved man who keeps his personal thoughts to himself. (And so should I.)
Tumblr media
But how do I put him into a box?
Tumblr media
At least I have a Pokémon friend I can travel with permanently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re a little too late for that, Clavell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So it’s like that award from Kalos? Cool!
Tumblr media
I guess that’s how I’ll be able to get that Champion Ribbon on other Pokémon.
Tumblr media
At least I’ll be happy knowing I can school the teachers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND I get to fight the Gym Leaders again? Hopefully, it won’t be just a one-time fight.
Tumblr media
I don’t think it’s all that great. I might have to face... ...HER...
Tumblr media
Technically, I didn’t go to the actual destination point.
Tumblr media
I was hoping I could prepare Miraidon for battles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a good thing I caught this guy on Pi Day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always thought shiny Cyclizar would be more... ...blue.
Tumblr media
You mean, THAT was the Hall of Fame? No, that doesn’t count! You can’t just have the Pokémon go uncredited for their work. What is up with this country? Everything about the League here is all topsy-turvy!
Tumblr media
I made a wise decision to do a wonder trade.
Tumblr media
That should do it for now. I want to keep playing. But I don’t have a Pokémon with PokéRus. And without any PokéRus, I can’t make them as strong as they’re supposed to be. So until I can get this game to work with Pokémon HOME, it’s back to Sinnoh to train more Pokémon!

anime recs? also love revolutionary girl was wondering if you could suggest anything else you’ve really enjoyed??
if you want more artsy/avant garde kind of stuff, ikuhara's other work mawaru penguindrum is very good, though not as good as utena imo. stuff for adults can be enjoyable - mushishi is episodic and very intriguing. serial experiments lain is a good 90s one that's worth a watch, and satoshi kon's (director of the film perfect blue) magnum opus was probably his only series: paranoia agent. both those last two are kind of psychological in nature
I feel if you like utena, princess tutu is worth checking out. it's similar in that it deconstructs fairytale archetypes and is quite thematically 'dense'. people write essays/episodic analysis of it in the same way they do for utena
as for more recent shows, I adored keep your hands off eizouken for its zany and nonconforming female protagonists (it's a love letter to wanting to create something), and from the same studio I really like heike story, based on a japanese epic poem I believe. that last one is directed by naoko yamada, and she's directed some other good stuff: first season of sound euphonium is good, but there's also her standalone film liz and the blue bird, that's fantastic, and much more understated than her great film success (a silent voice)
hyouka is also decent, it's great from a visual storytelling perspective however it's very naturalistic in its style, distinctly 'unanime' like in its cinematography I think. I enjoy its characters, it's one of the few unabashedly 'anime set in high school' shows I can actually stand. it was based on actual novels not like manga or something and it feels that way
my pet show/manga is chihayafuru, great if you want a lady-led sports anime
idk I mostly watch shows for adults so I can't recommend like shounen stuff. the only shounen I've seen and really liked was fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, which yeah, is as good as people say it is and treats its female cast very well. it was written by a woman after all

In my dream last night, Ryukishi07 was developing an epic RPG with Shion as the protagonist?? There were typical rpg caves and whatnot, but also beaches and the school.
The game was going to give more lore and backstory to how Shion ended up the way she did (even tho the games already did- new Shion lore XD) She had very funny and on the nose lines like “I’d never want to hurt someone” and stuff- there was even a scene where she was on a beach, dug up a cross, and said “please forgive me for what I’m going to do. I never want to kill anyone”
And in the dream I would just watch the trailer nonstop XD It made me so excited cuz I love Shion. There were some brief scenes where we’d see Shion talking to Satoshi and I popped off lol
There was a new girl being introduced as well XD she was like Satoko’s age and had short brown hair. I think her name was Umi, and of course, had something to do with the ocean
… would anyone else here wanna play Shion the RPG XD

Ramble#9
My main focus here is on samurai manga…
top 5 samurai manga read this month:
#5. Kurozuka by Baku Yumemakura on story and Takashi Noguchi on art
Tumblr media
This is a story that takes samurai, crosses it with vampires and kind of just illustrates how far those two can go, It’s based on real 2 life guys, maybe even considered legends in Japan with a bridge and statue dedicated to them and everything, Yoshitsune Minamoto and Saito Benkei
Basically, the story starts with them trying to escape some pursuers in the mountains and in doing so they end up unwittingly shacking up with a vampire, a lady vampire,,, and shit just gets crazy from there…
Don’t wanna get too into it cause 1 it’s number 5 and 2 tbh the story wasn’t all that outside the romanticism and dark sides of immortality, but what I can say is that the illustration over the eras that pass and how a dude with a sword, a samurai, changes over the millenia was pretty cool to see…
Pretty rad action, decent enough story wrapped up in just 40 chapters, kind of a mid cast but i loved the concept and its illustration..
For all you anime folks it does have a 12 episode anime but I can’t speak on that adaptation and its quality, differences etc. at all.
#4. Gintama by Hideaki Sorachi
Tumblr media
Super popular in hella anime and manga circles, in a lot of top 10s n 5s and If you haven’t heard of it well don’t worry the world’s full of information you don't know so continue to enjoy the journey...
Anyways… Gintama… is a story… that unfortunately I can’t speak on too confidently as I haven’t finished but despite a valiant attempt to in one month while reading a bunch of other stuff, I got to 200sumthn out of 709… but yh…
Gintama is set in futuristic japan but still somehow having a shadow of the edo period mixed in, meant to give a new take on the real life events of japan’s borders opening, foreigners coming in and that essentially leading to the downfall of the samurai, except the foreigners here are literal aliens. The story follows a samurai that previously fought in the war to keep japan alien free who’s now a dead beat, sakata gintoki, a young aspiring samurai whose dad died and left him a dojo in a world where swords are banned, shimura shinpachi, and a pretty much orphaned humanoid teen alien named kagura, all just barely scraping by with doing a bunch of very odd jobs.
VERY HILARIOUS, and so far largely a gag manga but it flips the serious switch very well and what I really like about it is that unlike a lot of other samurai mcs and characters, these guys, especially the central mc of the trio, sakata gintoki, have zero ambition, but constantly stress and fight to the death with swords to rubber chickens to protect their simple way of life. This is exemplified by the words shinpachi’s dying father left him in the very first chapter “Even if there comes a time when you must throw away your sword, never throw away the sword you have resting in your soul.”
I know it builds into an amazing story where almost every character they ever interact with pitches in and I'm probably underselling like crazy but if you want something samurai but samurai like you've never seen, check it out, I hear it’s worth the time and so far that’s proving to be so over the top gags and all.
Anime peps the anime is complete with 201 episodes.
#3. Sengoku Youko by Satoshi Mizukami (mangaka of spirit circle, Lucifer and the biscuit hammer and more)
Tumblr media
Technically not a samurai story, leaning more into fantasy but it's in that era and a ronin is in the main cast so bite me and my list ig…
Anyways this is an epic that somehow does an incredible extensive story in 100 chapters and it's not too surprising given the mangaka (seriously check out spirit circle, i’ll never stop talking about it, my favourite manga ever at just 46 chapters and Lucifer at the biscuit hammer which is pretty up there as well, which finally got an anime adaptation this year with 65 chapters).
The story follows a demon named Tama trying to bring peace to the world traveling the land with a human named Jinka who's trying to become a demon and hates humans, but because of his love for demons does whatever Tama tells him to. Further than the usual “what is strength?” question that you could say the way of the sword tends to boil down to, this story looks at the question of “what is a human?”, as the duo run into other humans and demons with their own perspectives and characteristics.
Unfortunately it’s pretty hard to sell it more without getting excited and blabbing it all but brilliant story (admittedly with a little bit of a choppy start), great cast and cast dynamic, dope action, average but fitting art, highly recommended.
Side note, this had one of the coolest, if not THE coolest dragon depictions and fights I've ever seen in manga.
#2. Ichigeki aka one hit kill by Jiro Matsumoto
Tumblr media
This was honestly an unexpected banger, as in, my firm philosophy is that by definition the average manga is average so you gotta just be thankful for bangers when they come but even so, especially for how short it was I was blown away.
The basic premise is that some peasants are brought in from the countryside to get some quick training in the sword and used as a throwaway one time hit squad but after they survive and show some promise, they're trained more seriously and sent on increasingly important but increasingly dangerous missions.
What I really love is how this story really highlights the caste system of the time, sounds weird to say but a lot of samurai manga mainly focus on the samurai class and up which I think paints this picture that some people just chose to pick up swords and others didn't, when really for the most part a lot of that was predetermined by birth. There were organized schools that only accepted certain families and it was only in extreme off chance cases that a peasant could even get their hands on a sword much less get formal training.
But yh, story and pacing was great and would even call it phenomenal (especially relative to the length), brilliant cast and cast dynamic, really loved the way the peasants viewed themselves and were viewed by others over time as they became more established, great action and pretty dope art, absolute banger in only 49 chapters, highly recommend.
#1. Kozure Ookami aka Lone wolf and cub by Kazuo Koike on story and Goseki Kojima on art
Tumblr media
This is a actually apparently a classic samurai epic and when I say epic I'm not using it loosely just to say it's good which it is, but when I say epic I mean to think along the lines of the Iliad or dante’s inferno.
The story follows a famed samurai, ogami itto, official executioner appointed by the shogun (really big fukn deal), framed, defamed and now turned assassin traveling the land on the path of revenge with his son daigoro.
Now if you're familiar with epics you'll know they're quite long and tbh when I started I was a bit confused like why is this dude out here carrying out assassinations with an infant? and is every chapter just gonna be him killing randoms? do I really need to know the name and history of EVERY prefecture like fr???? (really reminded me of that one chapter of the Iliad where they just listed everybody and their moms from athens)
A little bit of a slow start for me especially as the mc was just super stoic, the ideal samurai if you will but it's through that we see his character and what a true bushi/samurai is. Through any danger and challenge he sees his duty through to the end. Even the decision not to kill in the face of certain death. Wildly enough his kid is not a prop at all as watching his father over time he picks up his habits and has his own adventures.
The action isn't the smoothest but it perfectly captures that old samurai flick vibe, phenomenal aesthetic that becomes even more exceptional in the final few arcs and some of the greatest dialogue around the meaning of Bushido I've ever seen. A small example I'll give is in a duel he has with another fallen samurai, he’s asked what the right thing to do would be when caught in an ambush. Standing by his lord’s side and defending them or leaving his lord’s side to take the initiative in battle, both with equal chances of success.
It's 142 chapters but because almost every chapter, especially early on, is isolated and almost feels like a movie, it can be a bit of a rough read but definitely worth it. (actually started last year and read the second half this month).
hm: tenkaichi, elusive samurai, gantz:e, sengoku strays
top 5 samurai manga before this year
#5. Gamaran by Yousuke Nakamaru
Tumblr media
I almost want to say hunter x hunter but for samurai but the only real similarity is the mc trying to find his dad + in this he's trying to kill him cause they basically pulled an itachi and killed his squad.
I love this manga but again number 5 so I'm not trying get too into it plus it's really for the most part a battle tourney, nothing against tourneys but fight fi*azP_Qzght fight gets a litlle tired over the years yk?
Now why this is top5 is that along with really great art I really loved the detail put into the choreography and technique of the fights, as in alot of times sword fights, if they're not basically pokemon battles can be bland despite the contextual meaning and weight of it all. Like it's hard to really differentiate one swordsman from another midfight because outside of their stances they all just look like they're swinging swords pretty much the same way and on occasion shouting random stuff, especially in manga, but maybe that’s just me idk… But gamaran takes the time to illustrate the characteristics of each style, strengths, weaknesses, body motions, etc, to really give almost every fight a real definitive feel
solid story despite what I said about tourneys, great art, pretty dope cast, amazing action and only 194 chapters
There’s also an ongoing sequel called Gamaran: Shura but that only has 25 chapters so far and hasn’t really gotten anywhere yet
4. Sidooh by Tsutomu Takahashi
Tumblr media
This story follows two brothers whose mother dies in front of them as kids, leaving them with the last words "It is the fate of the weak to die", giving them an obsession with strength that leads them to claw their way up into the ranks of society
Really great pacing, great story and amazing aesthetic, an interesting art style that's a bit inky for lack of a better word but goes really well with sword strokes and stuff like that + some of the hardest drip I've ever seen on folks in that period and some of the meanest stare downs I’ve ever seen.
It's complete with 269 chapter but only 250 are translated to English, if you've been listening for awhile this is where I usually say fuck the french cause they usually have more manga chapters translated than others in general but hate is lame and all I need to do is step up and translate shit myself if I really want to yk so yh, sorry France, all my hate towards you will solely because of colonialism and especially what you've done to Haiti. fuck France and fuck imperialism
3. Vagabond by tajehiko inoue ( mangaka of slam dunk and real)
Tumblr media
This is something I'm always hesitant to mention because it's so good but is almost certainly never going to be completed and there's so much other great works to see but this is a definitive work of art and it'd be criminal to leave it off the list.
This story is based on the life of miyamoto musashi, a legendary swordsman, legendary, as his feats for a self taught peasant are just incredible, in real life this eventually culminated in him founding his own sword school, the Niten ichi Ryu (roughly translated to two heavens as one) but the manga doesn't really get to that bit.
Probably by far the greatest art in this list, Inoue is a master of the craft, and the investigation of the way of the sword and what it means to be unrivaled under heaven via musashi's travels and encounters with other known legends like the yagyu and itto ryu is truly enlightening.
Brilliant characters and character dynamics, stunning art that can never be understated, brilliant dialogue, very engaging fights, just an all round brilliant manga…
Besides the fact that a chapter hasn't come out in about 7yrs… I cry… 327 chapters out and translated if you can handle it…
2. Shigurui aka death frenzy by Takayuki Yamaguchi
Tumblr media
This was only 84 chapters but in case the name didn't give it away it gets pretty wild
The story revolves around the participants in the first fight of a deathmatch tournament, one being blind and limp while the other only has one arm. We're shown the events that led to them being chosen to fight and what they continue to swing their swords for in spite of their condition, and both having started out as students of the same sword school.
Lots of tragedy packed in here, lots of gore, very clean art, pretty dope fights, solid cast, and a brilliant story that really illustrates the sometimes unbecoming struggle that is being samurai.
1. Blade of the immortal by Hiroaki Samura
Tumblr media
bro... just trust me on this one....
I Know this is about manga but 3 Anime movies I gotta mention are: sword of the stranger, Lupin the IIIrd: The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa and ninja scroll
listen in to hear my top 5 swordsmen

imperial!!! :3?
[For reference, Imperial is something to the effect of "what film do you think has the best cinematography"]
You have asked the right person this, I'm literally a film student. If I had to pick one, gun to my head, I'd answer the first Saw movie, the 2004 one, because while it's not perfect it's so unique that it stands out among the crowd. Other picks, in no particulsr order .
- Any movie Satoshi Kon made. His work is good. For cinematography and editing in particular I have to give it to Millennium Actress as his best but I like them all.
- Triangle of Sadness doesn't have particularly noticeable editing tricks, but the editing is still sublime, nothing takes you out of the story. Also it's really good in general if you can put up with the insane 20 minute vomit scene.
- Spree. Please Watch Spree. While it's critiques of mass media in the modern day are so surface level they might as well not be there (if you're looking for good critique of mass media, I'd much rather recommend a book. Read Guy Debord's "The Society of the Spectacle"), it has fantastic editing & has such a unique visual character that I can't help but love it.
- Every single Edgar Wright movie. Particularly Baby Driver. I'm biased on him *and* he's an obvious pick, but, like, come on. I can't not recommend the guy who did the editing on fucking Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Shaun of the Dead on a question about cinematography.
- The Real Will Wood. The editing is again so unique I can't help but recommend it, but this movie is basically a shitpost.
- Everything Everywhere All At Once is the most obvious pick in the world, but, like, come on.
- The Temptations of Saint Tony. An Estonian slow film of epic proportions. It's got a very low budget feel, but they do a lot with it. Camera work really sets the tone of every scene immediately.
- Tsotsi. I don't have anything insightful to say here. Watch it anyway.
