AC/DC is a VERY smart song, one of the reasons it’s my favorite lyrically in the show is that it’s so explicitly about electric trains and has multiple references to super interesting issues/traits with them. This doesn’t go into the broader electricity puns (which are shockingly versatile), just the ones most relevant to trains

“Feel my magnetism”

I’m still trying to figure out if this is an issue with remotely modern electric trains and motors, but I have heard a claim about a turn of the century New York Central S-motor (one of the very first mass produced electric locomotives!) basically “picking up and stealing” some tools left near the track this way and then dropping them when switched off.  Basically the whole “pulling in things with magnetism” has at least some real life precedent with trains.  

“AC/DC it’s okay by me/ I can switch and change my frequency”

This was perhaps the defining feature of the CC 40100 Electra’s helmet was based on.  Due to inconsistent electrification systems (due to early 20th century tech limits) it’s very common to have 2,3, even 4 voltage locomotives and EMUs since it’s cheaper and easier than replacing all that infrastructure.  Having both AC and DC compatibility is actually super old, the New Haven Railroad had one of the first AC-powered lines ever and the very first AC locomotives there had to be equipped for both it and the existing DC third rail in other sections.  But being able to run on multiple AC frequencies is much more recent, and the CC 40100 was an early example of it.  The Northeast Corridor in the US actually requires trains capable of running on THREE different AC voltages/frequencies, being able to “change your frequency” is an important requirement there (and in continental Europe)  

Basically, silly 70s-80s era bi allusions are just how electric trains are.  It’s so out there but so on the nose.  It’s probably the single smartest writing decision of the show because it works so well and talking train media otherwise NEVER talks about these aspects of electrification.  

“I can shock you, I can set you on fire”

The history of diesel and electric trains involves so, so much spontaneous combustion.  Exploding is almost exclusively a steam engine thing, but if they wanted to dramatically kill Electra or Greaseball or any of the Nationals, this is always an option and weirdly underused.  

“I can reach up and pluck down the lightning/watch the conductor, see the live wire”

Direct reference to overhead electrification and how pantographs are raised to make contact.   Also fun play on train conductor/electrical conductor, which is popular in trolley/train jokes.  This system is something almost exclusive to trains and part of why they are so established, efficient, widespread and convenient as electric vehicles.  They’re genuinely absurdly OP vs basically all other forms of traction since they don’t have to carry their own fuel/power supply and can have ridiculously high single-unit power since the only limit is how much capacity the power grid has (and how much can be practically used without wheelslip).  Due to their fixed paths they can run this way vs needing batteries and totally bypass the decades of density limits those had.  Even today batteries are not really practical as a main power source for anything bigger than commuter EMUs and switchers.  

(Trolleybuses are a thing and there’s been attempts at sticking pantographs on trucks… and I guess bumper cars technically count too lol) 

Shoutout to Stexico for having a very different chorus with somehow the exact same sentiment. 

“Macho/Hembra es mi conector” (Male/Female is my connector)

This is just a hilariously matter of fact statement about the electrical connections on AAR standard passenger engines and coaches, which I think Mexico uses since their rail system is so US-based but I could be wrong (privatization axed basically all their passenger services around the time Stexico came out and there’s very little even today).  The stuff about “with my switch I connect you” is also incredibly matter of fact because there’s usually a separate switch or dial to turn on head end power on locomotives.  

Electra is based on this very 70s bi stereotype/trope that lumps in the botanical definition of “bisexual” and makes characters “both male and female” in a way that’s inconsistently trans, GNC, and/or literally being 50/50 both in a way that doesn’t work that way in humans.  Velvet von Ragnar from Never Too Young to Die is almost IDENTICAL in this regard as another example.  But the hilarious thing is that it’s just… incredibly matter of fact and literal when applied to electric trains because so many of them are able to run on both AC and DC power because rail electrification is so messy and many of them are technically “both male and female” going off electrical connections.

Anyways, tangent aside

I do not know enough German to appreciate the intricacies of stuff like word choice or idioms in the translated lyrics but these ones are fun because they’re explicitly about overhead wires

“Steh unter Spannung”

I’ve seen the translation given as “I’m a live wire” but the more literal one seems to be “stand under tension/power/voltage”. “Tension” is often used in place of “voltage” especially outside of English, but there’s a fun double meaning with trains specifically. The allusion to voltage/power in overhead wire is obvious, but  literal catenary wire tension is also SO important specifically in rail electrification.  The wire has to be tight and straight enough to make proper contact with the pantograph (and getting the upwards pressure on those is also important).  Europe has mostly reasonably modern lines with adjustable weights to keep wire tension constant but the northeast US has HUGE issues with outdated systems with fixed wires that sag in the heat (then get snagged on pantographs and torn down) or snap in the cold when they shrink/expand.

Also seems to be a direct reference to pantograph pressure/contact with overhead lines, similar to the English version of this line.  There’s a strong hand/arm association with pantographs in general due to their design, modern ones bend in arm-like ways and “touch” the wire in a very particular way.

Also this is probably just wild coincidence but “Griff” makes me laugh because Zaine Griff was the workshop Electra.

Ahh there’s a lot of stuff going on since I basically trashed out a lot of what happened in both seasons. I kept certain aspects like the Quintessons since they were most likely going to be the final villain!

I’ll try and give a detailed summary without overwhelming you haha. I’m still struggling with pacing slightly but that’ll be a quick fix!

I’m going to assume that the GHOST organization we saw was in America most likely. But what if there were other GHOST organizations through the globe? These ones the Autobots haven’t discovered yet and have been working in the dark. I’m a firm believer that ES had the potential to bring in more human characters because it makes sense with how the sleeves work and the ember stone shattering, we could’ve branched out to see other autobots/cons. It makes sense that they would be around the globe rather than just in one continent.

I wanted to add more details to Mandroid’s experiment of basically making himself Cybertronian. In other GHOST organizations, they allowed for Mandroid to experiment on people to see if humans can be compatible with evolving. Most of these people were orphans or homeless and the experiments are like a side event during season 1. Inspired by Young Justice, eventually there were a few kids that had the genetic disposal to be compatible with energon/bind with cybertronian technology. But a healthy compatible, not like how it was with Mandroid lol.

These characters ofc are my ocs but they play a major part of the story. It may turn off people but hey, my rewrite my rules >:)

In total 8 were compatible. Some of their parts were amputated, body parts that were deteriorating or were broken due to neglect from medical care. I’ll have to make a separate post about them. But the first half of s2 would sorta revolve around our new cast just to introduce us to the world of ES and a second half of the story that’s very important! Focusing on the other mechs, humans, and even new Terrans :)

The gist of season 2 more so revolves around the other GHOST organizations building their own teams of mechs. They have certain Bots that they want in particular. Bee just happens to be their most wanted because of his experience with working along Optimus. But with other bots being scattered around the world, I wanted to add more of our beloved autobots that we didn’t get to see in the rest of the seasons! Here are some of the bots who ultimately get brainwashed. Keep in mind when I use the term brainwash rather than mind control.

Mary’s goal is to brainwash the mechs not just mind control them like Mandroid. She wanted to make it to where they couldn’t leave, where they didn’t want to. The role of being a Quintesson agent would be given to her instead of Izzy bc I wanted Izzy to be her own character. We’ve seen how Quintessons can shape shift, so she ends up using that to pull a lot of strings. She turns everyone against each other, isolating them in the process and completely ruins their relationships, turning them into the most vulnerable but worst versions of themselves. Then, they capture the bots, and completely destroy their personalities with a special chip that a brainwashed Skyfire worked on :,)

To add, I wished we could’ve seen the evolution of the sleeves instead of a time skip. That’s so crucial but during s2, they just have these powers?? That’s something we needed to see evolve! So we would see their powers grow and it be out of control. Because Bee has no idea how to help, it really makes him spiral because he can’t do much and he feels like he’s failing his protocol given by Optimus.

Two of our new humans end up being the ones to betray the Autobots and the Maltos are very heart broken bc of the fact that they built a strong relationship with the Maltos. But that hurt leads to a strong exchange of hateful words which lead the two to follow through with GHOST’s plans.

S3 would be about catching the brainwashed bots but also the general mind controlled bots. Mind controlled bots simply have a prototype of the device that Skyfire made. It’s like Mandroid’s so it isn’t as strong as the brainwashed bots. The autobots and cons would work together to save their friends, free the mind controlled bots and also stop the Quintessons from conquering the planet. Ughhhh there’s so much detail I’m putting bc ES deserved a better ending.

If you have any specific bots you would like to know please ask! Each bot has their own arc and so does each character! It’s very long and complex, I’ll def be working on designs, story explaining, etc! But asking these questions also helps clear up the story along the way! <3

Ok, time for another ramble on what I think ES’ toyline needed to be, and how that extends to the show.

Both need to embrace having four distinct factions: Autobots, Decepticons, Terrans, & Arachnimechs.

As well as having distinct themes.

The Autobots are mostly public service vehicles in relation to their partnership with GHOST. As mentioned prior, the GHOST centric toys here would be Optimus, Bumblebee, Elita, Wheeljack, Inferno, Red Alert, Smokescreen, Quickshadow, Grapple, Strongarm, Tow-Line, Bulkhead, Quickmix, Fanbelt, Seaspray, Tracks, Longarm (double spy mode of Laserwave), Sky-Lynx & the Dinobots.

The Decepticons are mostly militarized vehicles and savage animals: Megatron, Bludgeon, Slipstream, Knock Out, Drift/Deadlock, Clobber, Sky-Byte, Lugnut, Blitzwing, Thundercracker, BlackArachnia, Shadow Striker, Swindle, Hardtop, Needlenose, Laserwave (double spy mode of Longarm), Turmoil, Quake, Dropkick, Shatter, Weirdwolf, Frenzy, Dead End, Wildbreak, Heatseeker, Slashmark, Krok, Laserbeak, Ratbat, Octane & the Commandos (Ruination Awakens, baby.)

The Terrans are pretty much as they are, a bit of a non conformist vibe by being any old vehicle or animal without a cohesive theme. Twitch (drone), Thrash (bike), Hashtag (van), Jawbreaker (dinosaur), & Nightshade (gargoyle-owl) like before, but with the addition of Rubble (Mini-Spy vehicle homage), Sideswipe (G2 themed but inspired by the IDW Protoform version), Slash (the Velociraptor that’s included as part of the Dinobots off and on), Quintus Prime (mostly because it’s weird to me he DOESN’T have a toy) and Gauge (construction vehicle).

The Arachnimech faction is where things get interesting. The main gimmick are the little buggers themselves.

But the primary difference is they can Transform, and make up the “Tacticon” assortment, being analogous to Mini-Cons, Battle Masters, and RotB’s Beast Alliance weapons and combiners.

One variant has a Robot Mode akin to a Headmaster Unit.

The rest are accessories that Transform into weaponry and “control masks”.

Like Mini-Cons, the idea is the Tacticon Arachnimechs are cross compatible with all the Autobot/Decepticon figures. You want a bug headed Optimus, go for it.

As for larger figures, the Arachnamech faction, like the Terrans, are a bit of a grab bag of both Autobots and Decepticons that Mandroid enslaved. Notable toys include Skullcruncher, the Insecticons, Gears, Blaster (with a special Arachnamech cassette based on the scrapped Stinger cassette he was meant to have in G1), Starscream, Skywarp, Nova Storm, Airachnid, Cliffjumper, Mirage, Buzzsaw (who I saw as Mandroid’s Cluck to his Robotnik), Rumble (who, along with Buzzsaw, is compatible with Soundwave and Blaster), Bluestreak, Ironhide, Brawn, Cliffjumper, Tailgate, Diabla, Iguanus & The Constructicons who form Devastator (with Scorpulator being his pack in accessory). The crown jewel of the Arachnamech line would be an Arachnamech version of Scorponok patterned a bit more after Zaozorigun from Goldran.

Mandroid would ideally be a Headmaster who transforms into an Arachnimech like head akin to the Megahead Megatron toy.

From there the second phase of the line would pivot away from the Arachnamechs, and replace them with the Quintessons (intermingled with Mercenaries, as show wise, the Quintessons would hire bounty hunter Transformers to do their dirty work initially.) Similarly the line would become Heroic Terrans vs Evil Quintessons.

The new toys would include

Lightbright: A Nightshade retool. An androgynous boy in this universe. A running gag is he always has a crush on other female Transformers of the day like Quickshadow and Airachnid. Talented in the arts and is a whizz at other languages. He always opens up a conversation with the Universal Greeting. Transforms into an Angry Bird like creature. He and Hashtag are particularly close friends, maybe more? (It goes without saying these other Terrans AREN’T Maltos, but do become friends with them.)

Lickity-Split: A hyperactive scooter girl. Becomes acquainted with humans by being a courier. She does a lot of Energon deliveries, which gets out of hand when her customers are revealed to be Decepticons and Quintessons that are up to no good.

Horri-Bull: A moody bull in a China Shop sort. Deep down there’s a good Spark, but he doesn’t have the best influence being found and mentored by Tracks’ flighty kid brother Needlenose.

Skar: A new Dinobot ankylosaur. Jawbreaker and Slash take him under their wing. The diminutive Slash revels in being the “big” sister for a change. Brilliant but a clumsy goober that doesn’t know his own strength, similar to IDW Skar, TFV Kakuryu, and RiD15 Scowl. Chose the name “Skar” because he thought it sounded cool. Grimlock approves.

Swift: A military drone girl who sympathizes more with the Decepticons and has mixed views on Megatron’s current situation. She and Horri-Bull tend to find themselves on the opposing side of the Maltobots.

Hi Score: A video game geek that has a thing for retro games in particular and is fascinated by the human culture surrounding it. Sounds like Milhouse, Transforms into a Brickbear that can be a stand in for any video game mascot like Mario, Freddy Fazbear or Pikachu. Mystery of Convoy and Afterdeath are among the games he’s currently playing, but are also games exploited by the Quintessons, Kremzeek and TORQ.

Geomotus: A bit of a space case, who tends to get wrapped up in his own interests and rambles on about them. Gets overwhelmed easily and finds solice in fidget toys and Kre-O blocks. Often plays with Mo and builds elaborate Kre-O projects like a replica of the Ark.

The usual Quintesson judge is included, albeit with a gimmick that allows it to Transform into a robot mode similar to early concept art.

Scientist, Prosecutor, Bailiffs and others in the usual Quintesson kangaroo court are available, each having a vehicle mode that corresponds somewhat to their job.

exceptional short story, puzzling map, & first city coin

exceptional short story: what exceptional stories, if any, would you consider canon for your oc(s)? if you haven’t played any, which ones do you think would fit them?

Amias is the only one who’s done very many… obviously, All Things Must End and The Shallows are very core to their character, so those two can go in the “highest tier” of canonicity (with their ambition and Evolution) where even in compatibility mode it’s more of a Treachery of Stories thing where more than one person can have done something and the details just get elided enough that it’s not exactly the same thing. Most of the others they’ve done are something that they’ve done. The Bloody Wallpaper is a fascinating one to talk about here because you forget almost all of it, but it happened at an applicable point in their ambition and October showed up to be weird at them, so it’s pretty canon for those things. I’d say they can’t really have done The Laws of the Game when they did it, since it was one of my first EF stories and involved them doing strange things with Correspondence in sports (though I didn’t really recognize it as Correspondence at the time, that’s how new I was), but it was fun and heartwarming so I feel like it’s maybe sorta canon? I’ve done a bunch more than this, I just can’t remember things. Um… hm. The Richest Juice in Poison-Flowers was I think technically my first ES? And it seemed like a pretty appropriate early-game story but I don’t know if they really did it or not.

I don’t know, they’re pretty easy to fit into most Exceptional Stories. They have a reputation as an investigator (even if usually an esoteric one these days), and a lot of Exceptional Stories start with investigating something, so they tend to go “sure, might be interesting!” And if it doesn’t seem like something they’d likely be involved with, I don’t tend to play it until I can find a good reason. But most of them aren’t really… ones I’m invested in being canon, if that makes sense.

Honestly… it might be Irem. I like seeing the futures. I like how strange they are, and how even the happiest ending is a bit unsettling and melancholy (but still a happy ending, of the kind you have to make for yourself). And I like that you absolutely cannot make any predictions about the future of the setting from it, because things are happening there like Mr Fires being gone in the Nearby Future but present in the Chilly Future. And “Mr Fires might be killed or otherwise Removed fairly soon” is one of the things that’s hinted at outside Irem, even, iirc? Its obsession with London is set up to come back to bite it hard in multiple ways. But it’s there in the Chilly Future! It might survive! Irem is so absolutely perfect on the “no actionable information but ‘this could happen’” front.

I really want to know more about the Third City revolutionaries. They invented the Emergence, but now it seems to be a process that often just… happens, and sometimes even threatens to happen involuntarily. Which means they changed something about the nature of death in the Neath. And I want to know how they did it and whether it was what they meant to do (and if so, why—were they trying to find a communication method to the Far Shore even then?) and also what they did.

As for future cities… this one is kind of also a complaint? Something I want to see more of because what we got wasn’t quite satisfying to me. Basically, I like the idea of the Neon Future, but I wish we could see some more mutually exclusive interpretations of it. I understand why they went with cyberpunk vibes, I just feel like the cyberpunk vibes are too generic. We have magic-cyberpunk satire on modern life, that’s Shadowrun. I want it to be more shadowy and mysterious. I want to see it from the point of view of someone who isn’t jaded and matter-of-fact about it. It could be such a fascinating angle on the genre it’s trying to deconstruct-reconstruct, but instead it mostly just Did The Genre, imo. It could be so weird and—I need to write Neon Future fic. Damn it.

I prefer not to involve character from Smash Bros games cause there are so many characters in it that are compatible with Luigi, might as well be half the gallery and that's a LOT. Like, Luigi can be shared but Jesus Christ Almighty.

For Dharkon, Luigi would probably beyond terrified and would refuse any and all interaction with the being (I saw pictures of them), but if it was forced like with the artifacts, that would be a very epic yet dark story because that is a sentient, god-like deity, not an object that's being controlled by another. Since it's from another world entirely too, the rules change a lot so Mario and co will have a very hard time ever getting Luigi back, especially alive.

If the artifacts that have already been used alongside or have met Luigi to know him and his hidden potential and have gained sentience so they can find him specifically, not only is it terrifying, it is very dangerous. Most may not have emotions and so the intentions will be anything but good and they will have little hesitation or regard for anything standing in their way. Things can get dark and even deadly very quickly. Luigi won't want to do anything with any of them but that didn't stop the villains from doing the introductions, the artifacts won't allow themselves to be stopped from reaching their goal. They would also go straight for Luigi's soul and try to attached themselves to it so tightly that they'd make it nearly impossible to be removed from him.

Also about Sailor Moon. I have not watched a single episode of it and before you kill me and not even give me a grave hear me out. They did not have it on Greek TV when I was little and I only found out you can watch pirated anime for free when I was a teen. Plus, I'm very picky with what anime I watch and since Sailor Moon was so popular then that it was thrown at my face, I had no interest in it. Anyway! Let’s start with Cater! If this gets an ok amount of engagement, I might make a more in-depth post or do other characters later.

Cater - ESE (ESFj) - “The Communicator”

Cater’s sociotype is ESE (ESFj) which fits with his sunny, outgoing personality. His forms of love are Mania and Eros (I will cover that in a bit). He’s the type that when he falls, he falls HARD. And there isn’t much stopping him when it comes to conquering what (or who) he desires. Even when the other party shows disinterest, he won’t lose hope.

Cater is the type that gets blinded by love he doesn’t notice or acknowledge the other person’s flaws. His type makes him a very passionate lover.

Cater puts a lot of value into aesthetics so Eros seems to fall in line with him. This doesn’t mean beauty and good looks is the sole source of his love. They might help get him interested, but once he falls in love, the other person will be nothing but perfection and flawlessness to him.

Now out of all forms of love, Mania is the most passionate. It’s that crazy kind of love which may veer into obsession. Cater can withstand a lot of sacrifice for the sake of love… which makes sense when you look into his habit of people-pleasing.

Alistair and his sister Matilda are only a year apart but we're both accepted into Hogwarts at the same time. Finn's comments about how he'd play his Ochi character from 2021 differently now made me think he'd feel the same about Mike in s4, and that maybe he didn't really know as much of Mike's full arc until s5 dropped. his comments about Mike's ending seem to suggest this too. So maybe he was just playing s3 mike without thinking he was closeted when he kissed. I genuinely just think that s3 was finn doing his best on screen kiss which is fair for a 15 year old boy, you can tell how it progressed from the first ep to the last too, by which point they would have gotten used to doing that on screen a little more. millie's technique was obviously based on having likely watched more kissing in her life in romance/period drama movies and reality tv, whereas finn's steady diet of horror films and male audience-oriented punk music scene wouldn't have given him a great education on how to kiss a girl tenderly lol. she was going for a slow moving mouth kiss, whereas you can see finn is literally puckering before their lips even touch. i noticed this as a casual viewer in s3 because quite honestly, the duffers literally shove it right in your face, i felt uncomfortable watching them in a way i definitely didn't during the s2 snow ball kiss despite them being younger, so clearly the grossness of kissing for the sake of kissing during puberty was the duffers' intention for that story lol.

if the byler kiss is meant to be romantic and not awkward, then they will film it until it conveys that, yes even if finn has to be advised in a detail fashion by an intimacy co-ordinator. noah said the duffers are happy to stickle until something is perfect. he also said he was advised 'less is more' which i can't help but think applies to his enthusiasm for byler scenes lol - if finn lacks finesse then noah lacks subtlety, and that could make for a wacky on screen kiss that needed a lot of direction haha

I think that's a fair assessment for Mike's character and Finn's acting as well. Maybe the directors had a specific vision and underlying theme we are yet to see play out, but the acting was adequate to what they wanted seeing as those takes remained - they were typical teenagers. I often talk about my memories of kissing girls at that age and man oh man, it really makes those scenes awkward hahaha but it captured it!! That was teenage weirdness at it's finest and most cringe, and actual teenagers delivered. Totally authentic. And a pretty realistic read of how that all happened on screen.

Admittedly I didn't notice it my earlier watches, because I always kind of glazed over the Mike and Eleven stuff as a casual viewer, so I never noticed Mike keeping his eyes open and not reacting to the kiss before El and the Byers move away, El's goodbye kiss. To me, looking back now, that reads as so important to Mike's character! That had to be directed, right?? It's so specific!! And you wonder how that direction was given? I do agree that certain things were withheld until later seasons but you do wonder how much... and hearing Finn talk about looking back at older performances and how he'd wish to have done things a little differently. Will be really interesting to hear him talk in specifics in general about the series as a whole after huge plot revelations.

I feel that with how perfectionist and stringent the Duffers are about retakes and retakes - they Byler moments and kiss(es) will be exactly as intended. Intimacy coordinators. Emotional direction. Conversations between actors. They'll take it seriously. Less is more is soooooo 👀
