This one was a rewatch for me, actually, but the rating is based on my watching experience with my current group (including one Jewish convert and my usual Watching Companion).

This is a really fun twist on the traditional exorcism/possession movie choosing to use Judaism as its core religion. Instead of a traditional demon, the movie presents us with a Dybbuk box, and a similar level of religious bastardization Catholicism normally gets.

The movie has some truly incredible shots, but they are undermined by hard cuts and a slightly disjointed plot. It builds tension well and doesn't rely too heavily on jumpscares to build that tension.

Overall, it's a solid little movie and I would expect no less from Lionsgate. I'd recommend it for someone looking for a new twist (but not too new) twist on exorcisms.

31 Nights of Halloween Horror: day 26

I am so behind, it’s inevitable at this point lmao. I’ll try and catch up on posting and watching tomorrow. My choice for the 26th of October was Hellhole on Netflix.

I rated this movie 6/10. It was mostly pretty boring, but ok. The last thirty minutes or so are where shit gets real and makes the movie worth it lol. Like for real, that ending. Wowza lol. Sorry this is a short one, but oh well lol.

watching a horror movie with the ghoulettes and ghouls

Cumulus - Loves it when you cuddle into her side and hide the bottom half of your face with the blanket. You usually hold a pillow during particularly scary scenes but she is a much soft, warmer, and sweeter substitute. Loves paranormal horror and ghosts.

Cirrus - Queen of the move where you slowly wrap your arm around someone else's shoulders. Very smooth. She strokes your arm throughout the movie and tickles you when you start at a jump scare. Will trace her claws up the inside of your thigh during a tense moment on the screen, making you blush.

Sunshine - Is the jump scare. You'll be at a quiet part in the movie and she'll screech and leap at you, making you scream and swat at her while she attempts to distract you with kisses. You barely get a chance to hit the pause button when she drags you to the floor with her.

Aurora - Is huddled underneath the blanket with you, but has a distinct taste for gorier horror movies. When you're grossed out she loves it and gets a good laugh out of your queasy face but ultimate comforts you in the end. Hogs the popcorn.

Swiss - Attempts to distract you from your fear with his lips on your neck, fangs scraping against your pulse point. Especially enjoyable when the two of you are watching a vampire movie - you love the irony. When you're not canoodling you've got your legs in his lap.

Aether - King of making a comfortable space for you. Pillows, blankets, snacks, everything. You definitely swoon a little when he wraps one of his big, strong arms around you and pulls you into his chest.

Mountain - Unshakable. No matter the scare, no matter how gory he can weather it all. Teases you when you jump at the simplest things but still knows to leave the night light on when the two of you go to bed.

Rain - Gets distracted easily while watching a horror movie because he's got his fingers running through your hair. Cannot stomach heavy gore - which means you get to tease him for being a very poor example of a ghoul.

Dewdrop - Tries to sneak his hand into your pants at random intervals throughout the movie. Will murmur delicious little sinister promises into your ear at the same time someone is being mauled or mangled on the screen. He knows exactly what he is and what it does to you.

Phantom - Ultimate scaredy cat. You jump, he jumps and he has an iron grip on your hand the whole time. Hides his face behind a pillow at scenes even you can handle, which makes you laugh despite the fear.

Legit: every time I see this movie’s image, I think I haven’t seen it before, and then I see it in my notes and I’m like “what?”

There is the heavy implication that this is an exorcism movie, but it reads as more of a haunting/monster feature. The demon/exorcism element doesn’t even come in until part three.

It’s a bit hamfisted in its metaphors. It makes the male lead debilitatingly stupid. Especially since it doesn’t turn out that he’s like… staging the haunting to gaslight the female lead, which was what I thought in the beginning. No, he really is Just Like ThatTM. Which doesn’t work for the type of voice they’re making. Is the monster a metaphor for the abuse? Is it her latent desire to stand up for herself manifesting as a monster? I don’t know?!!

The lead actress KILLS with her possessed acting though. Very Exorcism of Emily Rose and I love a good contortionist. The two priests’ dynamic also salvages the movie in the last act.

but neither can save the movie entire from being just… Meh.

This game used the audio recordings of Anneliese Michel? It has a girl’s slow death under negligence because of her epilepsy and psychosis (using the brain scans to debunk it makes no sense it was the 70s and even doctors, their machines, and their medicine were ill-equipped. The "proof" was her acting strange around religious iconography, having different personalities, and eating bugs and urine. Nothing as supernatural as 'speaking in different tongues' occurred and her parents were deeply catholic so they're inclined to believe it's the devil. If you look at the dates, it coincides with the rise of the satanic panic.)

So, Airdorf mixed it into a video game boss battle. Yeah I’m not fucking with this game anymore what a sick joke.
