In regards to the SU x TF2 AU:

I have been racking my brain over here trying to understand the decision to make RED Spy a ruby and BLU Spy a sapphire. Nothing about his portrayal seemed to line up with canon depictions of rubies or sapphires, and RED Spy's gem isn't even faceted like a ruby. Also the obvious joke of making him a Bixbite, like the corrupted gem who was a giant crab, seemed obvious. Then it dawned on me.

He's a color-change sapphire, isn't he? That's why his RED version has a sapphire cut despite supposedly being a ruby? And also potentially why he's the only one we've seen RED and BLU variations of (though I get the impression that's also so one can be paired with Scout's Ma and the other with Engie) when all the others have been RED(-ish) isn't it? Or am I completely off base with this theory?

but since ive had lots of questions about details id like to mention that:

1. i originally had not planned to make any story behind the su au, so if there’s things that dont make sense, don’t align with canon and stuff, it was not planned soo im working with what i have :p

2. i was hoping no one notices the mistake i made of swapping the gems ruby/sapphire lol its because at first i had drawn Blu(sapphire) Spy in that page, but i thought it was confusing since there was RedSpy x Scout’sMa and Scout next to him, so i just changed the colors and i didnt change the gem bc i was lazy :P

3. the main reason i put both Blu/Red Spy was to create fusion, i thought to add an extra merc with a blu color would be cool for the fusions that isnt from ClassicTeam, and idk i couldn’t think of a better merc to have as a pair than Spy and i thought there is more potential with 2 Spies to work on a story than any other merc idk

(yes i didnt put garnet as the fusion so as not to make confusion with Demoman being a Garnet, and we don’t have an Amethyst anyways so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

4. it is IMPOSSIBLE to align each TF2 character with a SU character, there’s nothing in common between the two medias whatsoever, so the dynamics that im gonna be making for the TF2 au are gonna be a bit mixed, for example: RedSpy and BluSpy having Ruby/Sapphire’s dynamic (kinda), but also they have the same dynamic as Rose/Pearl, for the part where Red would go with a human (Scout’s Ma) and Blu would be jealous (just like pearl), HeavyMedic also would be having Ruby/Sapphire dynamic (the part where they fuse for the first time just like Ruby/Sapphire in the show, im still working on comic about this btw)

5. also im mixing with well TF2 canon story + trying really to make an original story too, soo its a whole mess ik :p im trying just bear with me ^^"

Gemology—the scientific study of gemstones

Colored Stones - This refers to all gemstones other than diamonds, regardless of their color. This term replaces the traditional distinction between "precious and semi-precious" stones.

Color Zoning - A phenomenon that occurs in many types of gem rough, where the color isn't evenly dispersed throughout the body of the stone but occurs in pockets or layers instead. The stone can have zones of lighter, darker, or different colors.

Diamond - One of two classifications of gemstones. Diamonds come in all colors, including black and white, but regardless of color they are still classified as diamonds, not as colored stones.

Fashioning - The process of cutting and polishing facets on diamonds.

Flaws - Any imperfections in gems, like visible cleavage planes or inclusions such as veils, fractures, gas or liquid bubbles, etc. If the flaw breaks the surface of the stone, it's called a surface flaw.

Half-Light - The edge of an incandescent bulb's reflection on a polished facet. Direct reflection can obscure defects on the surface of a polished facet. Only when the edge of the light reflection appears to pass the surface of the stone do some defects finally become visible.

Haloes - Disc shaped fractures, sometimes showing two or four lobes, due to strain generated at crystal inclusions e.g. zircon haloes in sapphire.

Healed fractures - Fractures occurring either during or after crystal growth which have filled with liquid and later partially healed, leaving liquid remnants or negative crystals. Healed fractures take characteristic forms in various gemstones e.g. rippled fractures in amethyst, fingerprints or feathers in sapphire and ruby.

Lapidary - The cutting of stones other than diamond.

peridot and labrodorite, fine-veined howlite and a small pile of rubies nested in their little welled divider like pulp. she looks over the collection blandly, as if such treasures hold no call for her. he knows better; knows how she seeks them out, fleshy little fingers trying them from the earth that bore them. he's not different, really. just uses different tools.

the shop she keeps is quaint. touristy, a hidden gem in its own right nestled on the outskirts of a mining town long since emptied. he'd been caught in the flow of patrons pulled by greed and gold, just one more face among thousands every year. unlike the humans he mills about with, nik knows it's a fool's errand, but still, something here holds his attention, gleaming and golden despite the dust that covers the town, desert sands kicked up by so much thru-traffic. he's more patient, bides his time. no big ask when he's so much of it

when he was younger he had hated this part, the seeking. in his impatience he'd have burned the whole town down just to find his treasure, but he'd lost precious riches in doing so, and he's content enough to wait now. knows he has an impressive enough hoard already; he's in no rush, has no need to prove himself.

and she's worth the wait, in the end. a crown jewel if ever he's seen one, with nails that glitter like sapphire and eyes as deep and faceted as amethyst. she looks perfectly at home among her collection, like he could tuck her into the case alongside flowing strings of pearls and expertly wrought chains of gold and no one would ever be the wiser. 'how much?' they'd ask.

jeweler headcanons

now that i've posted my jeweler translations i wanna post my headcanonssss

The stories don't really have a lot of substance to them. Basically they travel through portals called GATEs and it seems like it's for the purpose of traveling to alternate universes where the objective is just to give each Totoko of each universe a pretty gem. They run a shop together in a back alley of Akatsuka ward.

However the Hesokuri canon is kind of nothing and gems and minerals have been a huge interest of mine for months soooo I wanted to expand on that

Osomatsu

He’s got a loupe in his attack art which i think is soooo cute but there’s like a 7/10 chance he would scam you I think. Now there’s a chance he’s just looking through the loupe to make it seem like he knows what he’s doing and he’s bullshitting you but I prefer to think he actually does know his shit and knows what he’s talking about and how to spot a real gem bc ummmm it’s hotter that way.

In my heart I want him to be an honest, trustworthy man. I want to tell you you're safe buying things from him but it's osomatsu......

HOWEVER I think if he does sell fakes, he does have quite a few of them. A lot of glass filled rubies that he sells at the full price of a genuine Burma ruby, imitations and synthetics that are not disclosed as such, and he also doesn’t usually disclose any treatments. Although I don’t think his standards are Quite so low that he’d sell straight glass. But if you give him a good gem to appraise he’ll try to buy it at a lower price and sell it at a hell of a markup. Perhaps the real, high quality gems are only saved for Totoko?

He’s got the charisma to trick a lot of people into buying something that is not worth nearly as much money as he’s asking for, and is probably smart enough to be able to tell when a buyer knows their shit and when he can and can’t get away with bullshitting them. Probably makes conversation first to get a feel of how much you know.

Obviously he still takes on that "leader" role among the brothers. Like they all own the shop but maybe if you ask for the manager, he's the one that'll show up?

Mostly sells faceted gems that are not yet set in jewelry. Doesn't have any rough stones or mineral specimens, and might carry jewelry sometimes, but not much.

Will sell to anyone, but I think his clientele is usually like, the casual jewelry/gem consumer. Doesn't appeal to mineral collectors very much, and will sometimes sell to very very rich people but not often.

It's also shown in the story and his art that he will just shove the gems in his bag carelessly. No wrapping or special packaging, I guess he just throws them in there (which can cause scratches, fractures, and breakages among gems, especially of varying hardnesses)

The gems mentioned in the story are emotites, originally from Pazzmatsu, but I think he also deals mostly in red gems, particularly rubies, but of course he's got stuff like spinels, fancy sapphires, tourmalines, etc

Karamatsu

His attack shows that he only has jewelry, but it's jewelry made of all different types of gems so he may not focus on one particular type like Osomatsu. It also seems to be very big, extravagant statement pieces. In the story he's also shown at what looks like very expensive rich people parties, so while Osomatsu is more geared towards selling to the general public, Karamatsu may specialize in very very rich customers. Also explains why he's dressed so well lol my mans so put together.......

His personal favorite is probably sapphires, or some other blue stone. PERSONALLY. I think his favorites are specifically star sapphires. look at these

I think he’s honest enough that he’s the most reputable of the six to buy from. I think he’s about as skilled as Osomatsu, if not more, when it comes to identifying and appraising gems, but he’s not Perfect so he’s bound to make mistakes and maybe there’s some misidentified things in the mix. But I think he’s like 2/10 most likely to scam you. If you get something you didn’t expect he probably just genuinely didn’t know lmao he somehow doesn’t look as shady as the rest of them so I think he’s probably involved in reputable circles, sells to people that know their shit and doesn’t try to prey on those that don’t know anything.

He also properly packages and cares for his gems, he's not careless like Osomatsu. Also probably something required of him if he's going to be selling to a very wealthy clientele

Choromatsu

This guy will fucking scam you he is going to tell you shit that just straight up isn’t true. 9/10 chance you are not getting what you asked for. I went to a gem show in may with my friend and I saw a ‘gem’ that looked like fordite - which is tumbled paint scraped off the bottom of ford car factories. Very pretty but absolutely not a real gem, it's paint. I held it up and asked what it was - expecting the answer to be fordite - and he said some other name that I forgot but upon googling it its basically the same thing as fordite and this mfer said “and that’s naturally occurring!” do you think I am fucking stupid. anyway that’s the shit jeweler choromatsu tells you.

In the story and his art he's shown selling amulets of some sort, and he tries to sell one to Dekapan that's meant to increase libido and claims it's got something to do with cavemen. Despite him only being shown selling amulets, I do think he has small specimens and loose stones. just for me

He does Have real gems in his collection, but you can’t trust anything he says about them. He’ll try to pass off any fucking green thing as emerald yes he will sell straight glass. It’s a grab bag of anything. He tells some kind of made up story about the history of it, usually full of some kind of mysticism and what it could bring you. He knows a bit about how to identify a real gem but isn't as skilled as his older brothers.

He also seems at least a little disorganized, what with the amulets hanging on the inside of his jacket and all. It's a system that's organized enough at least that someone unfamiliar could figure it out, but it's also a little bit of like "I know where everything is" kind of a deal

Ichimatsu

His art makes it look like he digs up his gems himself, just cause the gloves and backpack and hat and map makes me think he's out in the field and stuff

The umbrella and blanket sale in his attack art also makes me feel like he’s not As shady as choro but is probably trying to sell them as like “this stone will cure your anxiety” type stuff.

His items are most likely genuine but overpriced. I get the vibe that maybe he digs a portion of his stuff out of the ground himself and is more of a traveling salesman kind of a thing. So part of the stuff he sells is stuff he dug up and cleaned himself and some is stock that he bought from others. But because of this, he's decently good at identifying more common minerals, like the kind you'd find at these spiritual shops. Maybe not that great with rarer minerals, though.

Most of his stuff is likely rough pieces, although I'm sure he has polished points, worry stones, those things carved like hearts.

6/10 likely to scam you just based on the fact that a 2 inch chunk of low quality amethyst is not worth $30 fuck off. he’s essentially the same as any overpriced metaphysical spiritual shop that sells crystals in the shape of penises for $20

I think he does know his shit in terms of scientific information, but he's selling them on the basis of like crystal healing and shit. He also doesn't know that much about crystal healing though he makes up the meanings whenever you ask

Jyushimatsu

the big bag and devious hat and cloak makes me think he stole that shit lmao

He looks like he has a citrine geode in his attack (natural citrine is actually quite rare, a lot of citrine on the market is heat treated amethyst) also it's fucking HUGE so it would be pretty expensive.

I get the vibe that maybe he steals expensive shit like big statement pieces? I don't know. I dont know ......

In the story it seems like he can appreciate both rough and polished stones. He might lean a little more towards rough specimens, but it sounds like he's quite happy with either one

As a salesman I think he's a bit more trustworthy as well? He was trying to sell something to Hatabou in the story but in his own Jyushimatsu way I have trouble truly understanding him.....

Todomatsu

His art and costume makes him look very well traveled, I like to think that he mainly collects rough mineral specimens, usually very rare and expensive collector's minerals. He's got the super niche expensive stuff that the average person doesn't know but that collectors would pay thousands of dollars for. In the story he also mentions picking something up from a mining location, which tells me he's taking shit that's coming straight out of the ground rather than stuff that's already been processed in some way.

Very very knowledgable about his stuff. His clientele is also very niche, like Karamatsu's, because the main people interested in his stuff would be people that are already into mineral collecting.

He's less likely to scam you solely because the people he sells to are usually skilled enough to be able to tell the difference between something real or fake, or an imitation. He has a reputation to uphold, so he can't risk ruining that.

Tear species guide Masterpost.2

(Disclaimer: Tear is not an actual gemstone, this is a fan-made open species based on Steven Universe. They are not related to the volcanic glass called Pele's Tears)

Tears are an elite nobility Gems. Primarily, they use their future vision to assure the process of Gem creation. Their main role in Homeworld is to organize and localize possible colonies for the creation of a Kindergarten.

In addition to their abilities as prophets, they can levitate. They have the power of creating crystals for their self defense such as weapons, armor and flight. However, Tears' future vision only applies to the events of a star/planet/moon and their condition.

Their main power is Cosmic Energy Manipulation, wich consists of being capable to create spacial dust storms. It can cause light distortions, that can heavilly harm a Gem's physical form (as Gems are made of light). This element is only able to be used on space or space-like atmospheres.

Because of their high rank status, Tears tend to have guards assigned to ensure their safety, since they were not made for combat. The most common types of guards can vary (Rubies, Quartzes, Topazes, other type of soldier/guard gem...)

They are a tall, skinny gem that generally have tear-like pattern limited to their face. However, there's a rarer variety of Tear that can have marking/patterns around their body. Tears have hair tend to have a shadow that resembles night star.

Their gemstones are more commonly faceted, resembling a star with 4 points. Its shape and pattern variates, and they can have inclusions such as being rutilated, a cat's eye, etcètera. A rarer variety of their gemstone is being a plain cabochon while having a variety of patterns.

Tears creation process involves White Diamond and they cannot be created like other gems, wich is why Tears are a highly rare Gem.

Off Colours Tears

Overcooked Tears are half the size of an standard Tear. Thicker Tears are the same size of a Tear and tend to have plump lips. They are both perfectly able to function in Homeworld and while being considered defective. Small Tears are unable to do their Gem tasks properly and are chased as an off colour.

(The more "masculine" base is just there in case someone wanted to go for another vibe)

I made this as a very general guide of "What I would do". They are an open species, and anyone is welcome to pick up something and go "I don't like this, I'm doing it my way". That includes palettes, forms, shapes and powers.

Per example, my original guide did not include a thick tear and they ended up being canon to me. A bunch of this (updated) guide is inspired by others' takes of things that I just didn't see coming and that inspired me to make it "official".

My priority is for others to expand my concept. I do not care if someone does something a way I don't like, because then there's no point of making them an open species. Literally go have fun.

This small prayer book is bound in enamelled gold and gemstones. It was purchased in 1538 by King Francis I of France as a gift for his niece. The gems consist of carnelian (two intaglios and eight cameos), rubies (27 polished pieces), turquoise (24 cabochons) and rhodolite (one faceted stone in the book’s clasp that has been described as tourmaline since 1942). Most of the rubies were mined from the Mogok area of Burma (now Myanmar). Based on historical considerations, the turquoise could have originated from Persia or possibly Uzbekistan, and the carnelian from either India or Saxony. Good news on the mystery boxes from last time! Hot Topic made some cool enamel pins but since they're mystery boxes you don't know which ones you'll get, and it's not possible to get the whole collection in one order because they only let you order 5 at a time and there are 6 designs.

Well, last time I got a Garnet, two Stevens, a Ruby, and a Sapphire. This time I got:

So I got the whole set! And what's more, it's really balanced! Two of each of the main four Crystal Gems, plus one each of Ruby and Sapphire!

I am very pleased that this set exists, though I wish they had not made Sapphire's front Gem facet weirdly curved (it's supposed to be triangular) and I wish there'd been some way to represent both of Garnet's Gem cuts instead of just the Sapphire one.

Hooray, I don't have to buy more boxes. :)

Hours before, under the watchful gaze of the moon, I’d journeyed to the Whispering Caves. There, nestled in velvet shadows, I'd found them. My fingers, guided by the tender memory of Thorin, had traced each facet, each vein of color.

Now, I held them close, a kaleidoscope of hopes and affections. A stone of deep emerald, capturing the verdant strength of his homeland and the lush promise of the future we would build. It would be the centerpiece, the heart. Then, a fiery ruby, mirroring the passion that burned between us, a fierce ember to forever remind him of the heat in his heart. He then set the ruby and the sapphires. I knew with a certainty that this first sword was a testament to the power of our love, etched in steel, reflected in light. I want to talk about the Vault Gods and my design process

Each idol was drawn as though they were statues or altar peices, something of worship not necessarily what the gods look like but what the villagers would interpret their looks to be.

First I wanted to ensure that they looked like villagers, or have a villager template. The initial drafts has them with their arms together in a villager pose.

Each design had multiple aspects I gave them, a material, a gem, a minecraft mob, and an item

Idona The Malevolent, kill and sacrifice the marked to appease this god

The idol is designed after cinnabar a toxic red material with high levels of mercury.

Idonas item is the vault hunters altar with reference and designs inspired by Mayan and Aztec sacrificial alters.

They are designed to look like a bat and a Wolf with lots of sharp angles and shapes, with cultish and sacrifical undertones

The eyes are rubies, a gemstone that symbolises life force. They are cut with a 5 point star facet and bezel with means the eyes are also pentacles, there is also a hidden sacrificial knife in the eyes.

They say experience makes you wiser, but is it wise to give it up for treasure? Sacrifice your experience and knowledge to Tenos the Omniscient to be granted treasure beyond your wildest dreams.

Tenos is made of silver or iron, a pure metal that is reflective

Tenos has the enchanting table book, a potion of enchanting and xp balls

They are designed with a lot of softer rounder shapes compared to its counterparts and is based on a polar bear with angelic bird wings to give it a wise and pure vibe.

The eyes are sapphires, with a gemstone meaning of focus and inner vision. Tenos also is the one one to wear a gemstone accessory to give the allusion to a third eye.

Velara The Benevolent, sacrifice your health, sacrifice yourself to appease Velara, only then will you gain the riches

The idol is designed to look like oxidised copper. I wanted Valara to look like an old and ancient god from a forgotten religion, the kind where you find a forgotten statue in a forest overgrown with new life.

The like all the idols, it focuses on a theme relating to what you use to open the altars, so Valaras design is health or in this case life.

Velara has the fern and tall grass as its minecraft item.

Initially designed to be more rabbit like the design ended up becoming vague in animal and more bug like.

The eyes on Valara are emeralds that symbolise rebirth and growth.

Wendarr The Timekeeper, you only have limited time, will you sacrifice some of it to this god for riches?

Wendarr is a brass idol, a very common metal for clocks and timepieces to be made from.

Wendarr is designed to look the most like a villager with wings similar to that of DaVincis flying machine.

Unlike the other gods, Wendarr did not receive a minecraft item as I felt the minecraft clock did not fit the ancient and old aesthetic. Instead, they received an hourglass and an alluded clock face in the background, and some rococo inspired designs in the foreground.

The eyes are made of topaz, which apparently stands for manifesting clarity and astrology?

Anyway that's my thought process and some small details about each God and my designs.

“Stab me.”

Superhero tossed a dagger onto Villain’s desk. It spun on the ruby embedded in its hilt and Villain blinked as it slowed to a stop, blade angled toward Superhero’s waist.

“Excuse me?”

Villain sputtered, glancing around his cubicle: three white walls, sloping stacks of paper, laptop puttering away in the corner. And in the center, stood Superhero. His armor smoked at the edges and ash drifted down from his pauldrons, darkening the cream carpet.

“I believe you’re in the wrong part of the building. If you want to put in a request, you’ll have to go through one of the higher-ups. They’re at the top floor–”

“I don’t need your boss. I need you.” Superhero insisted, pointing at the dagger. The ruby gleamed like a serpent’s eye. “Next week, at the gala, stab me with this. I know you’ll be there.”

“I don’t stab people,” Villain hissed, “especially not supers. I value my life. If I raised even a finger against you, half the Organization would be on my tail.”

“I’ll protect you.” Superhero leaned forward, palms spread over Villain’s desk, voice cutting to a whisper, “I can free you from this place. You’ll never have to work for [Supervillain] again.”

“No one leaves. I can’t leave,” Villain insisted, “you know what happens.”

“There are limits to his power,” Superhero argued, “he won’t be able to find you. I can assure that.”

Villain reached forward and curled his fingers around the ruby. Power purred through his palm and over his knuckles, alighting the hairs on his arm.

“Tracking enchantment,” he observed, “this will hit no matter who throws it. Why me? And why go through all the trouble of protecting me afterward?”

“It was always meant to be you.” Superhero swore, steel in his eyes. He placed his hand atop Villain’s and the power surged, coursing through Villain’s shoulders. Energy filled his chest and rolled against his sternum as he breathed.

“How cliche,” Villain droned, reigning in the urge to rip his hand away. Superhero’s hand appeared gentle, his fingers draped loosely over Villain’s, but the weight was controlled. As Superhero pressed down, Villain swore each facet of the gem would imprint its face upon his skin.

“You are my destiny,” Superhero smiled, letting up his grip, “my ruin, the arrow to my Achilles heel.”

Villain snatched his hand back into lap. “Did some prophet run away with all your fortune after telling you that?”

“No, I saw it. I saw you.” Sighing, Superhero staggered back. Dirt and ash fell with the sweep of his cape. “Everything. Everything ends with you. Only you can—”

Light flashed, encompassing the cubicle in white.

As Villain blinked at the carpet, where a black mark now scored through the center and part way up the wall, his coworker poked her head through the entrance. Her nose wrinkled at the lingering scent of smoke and she twisted her heel to tamp the smolder at the carpet’s fringe.

“Tough customer?”

“They were certainly demanding,” Villain muttered, dragging the dagger into his topmost desk drawer.

“What was that?” She inquired, sidling in.

“New letter opener.” Villain coughed and tapped his hand over a stack of papers. “Hey, we’re still good with covering the venue on Saturday, right?”

Fields of Mistria: Initial thoughts of a Geologist

I admit, this was a bit of an impulse purchase, I have never played Stardew or Harvest Moon (For this my review might be ignorant), it was never because I didn't like the concept, but when I was young my typical game was kind of whatever my brother played (so Pokémon, Star Wars battlefront, Sonic, Kirby, Skyrim, Animal Crossing, etc.). However, my TikTok feed was just FULL of people talking about this game, and I was actively avoiding thinking so I added it to the cart and purchased it.

I started the game immediately and was very confused but happy. The third character you talk to is obsessed with archeology and dabbles in geology, and one of his friends is obsessed with geology.

By this point I was kind of like "Okay, sign me up I am obsessed."

I grinded through the game, passing out at 2am frequently because I was not used to daily time limits, and completed the storyline to open the mines (Which I was most excited to get a look at).

Going in the first levels were copper and ruby, the perfect copper ore did look right which was exciting, but the game did fall into the pitfall of showing gems as, like, already faceted and not their normal crystal structure. Which bummed me a little, but I kind of get it (if I have to).

The next layer of the mines has a water theme and you can mine for iron and sapphires, (I have yet to get any iron ore yet so I can't judge it). I will pause and admit this game clearly is not going for geologic accuracy, so I won't judge it based off what you are finding together.

I am just infinitely grateful that geology was even mentioned, that people aren't mining just for the money but have a general interest in it. I feel like most games just overlook it, so for that I thank you Fields of Mistria team!

Regardless of everything, before I say what I wish this game does have I want to preface by saying I was never upset while playing the game and I will continue to love and play this game and I will recommend it to just about everyone I talk to

What I wish this game had:

-Ore stones that were more accurate looking, it isn't like ore doesn't look interesting (malachite I am looking at you) I know they were probably trying to stick with a color theme, but even rubies are found within zoisite sometimes which is also a green rock.

-Accurate gemstone crystal structures, I desire it, especially when I see them using quartz crystals in other locations, like I know you are capable

-I admit I am not far into the game yet, but we have characters that are clearly interested in geology, I would love a side plot where we explore the geology of the area, just as we do with archeology. (It deserves the love)

-I want to display my gemstones and stuff in my house too!

Anywho... It has been awhile since I posted about a videogame I think, It has been nice! I am thinking about getting Rika on release, so more videogame posts might be incoming, both on Fields of Mistria and Rika. I might have to get Stardew also because I just looked something up and you can... BE A GEOLOGIST??? I think I really was sleeping on farming sim games...I will still post my writing content too, I have one in the works I just have been lazy about writing it.
