Eddie stares at the place where the waves crash into the beach, a deep pull in his chest. He’s terrified of the ocean; it’s not a secret. Eddie hates the water and after ‘86 he thinks he’s fully justified in that.

But Gareth begged him to join the rest of them on this trip; Jeff pestered and prodded, and Bear said “this could be our last chance.” That’s what finally got Eddie to agree.

Jeff was going to college, Gareth still had a year left in high school, and Bear asked his long distance girlfriend to marry him. Corroded Coffin was dead with Eddie the only one still making music: turns out selling his songs to better bands pays surprisingly well.

He looks out into the water and sees his friends splashing and having a good time. It might be his last chance to face his fear with his friends at his side.

He puts one foot in front of the other until his toes sink into the sand and the water licks his ankles. He keeps going until it hits his waist.

He wants to go further but he’s frozen; locked in a battle of wills between his own determination and his default mode of running.

“You got this Eddie!” Bear calls from ahead. His eyes dart forward and he sees and hears his best friends all cheering him on. With a smile on his face, he takes another step. He hits the drop off suddenly and goes under.

He panics at first; arms flailing, heart racing, the salt water stings his eyes. But then he takes a deep breath (metaphorically) and remembers how to move his arms and legs to propel him to the surface. His head breaches the water and he gulps in air as he wipes his face.

The guys are right there ready to pull him out if he needed it; Gareth pats him on the back, Bear sends him a big thumbs up, and Jeff jumps to hug him tightly.

“I’m so proud of you!” He says into Eddie’s hair. Eddie moves until he’s hugging Jeff back in thanks.

“I can’t believe I did it.” He admits softly.

“I knew you could.” Gareth says reassuringly from the side. Eddie chuckles lightly, happy that he decided to join them.

“We’re not losing touch. We’re going to do this again.” Eddie says with a look that said don’t argue. The others laughed and nodded in agreement.

“It’s only the first day! We have a lot more to do.” Jeff says a look of fondness in his eyes as he gazes at Eddie. It’s a look Eddie’s seen before but has been too afraid to study. But he just faced his biggest fear so he can do anything.

He vows to himself that he’ll figure out what that means before the end of the week.

The captions are lyrics from Autopsy Garland by the Mountain Goats. I've been dreaming of making this for literal Years, and the mods for the zine let me do it for them! I'm still pretty proud of it, and only regret that I completely forgot to replace Col. Hsu with General Lee Oliver in the final. Sorry man.

I love the repeated theme of miles being terrified but choosing to face his fears because the last time he didn’t, his uncle got shot and killed. he’s always scared but he works through his fears and makes plans that are good. 

And the best thing about miles being scared but choosing to face his fears contrasts beautifully with Gwen’s tendency to avoid things that scare her-- not like threats of bodily harm or that bullshit but she’s terrified of being alone and abandoned that she tries to fit and follow the rules as best as she can, which is what she does with miguel. But by the end of the movie, she sees how that hurt Miles and she’s willing to change her behavior, change how she thinks the same way she did in the first movie because Miles makes her feel brave, he inspires her in a way not many people do and he unintentionally helps her see the wrong in Miguel’s actions, prompting her to finally oppose him

Plus, her conversation with her father, having him finally choose her over his duty and seeing how much he cares about her probably helped her gain her confidance once more and the fact that he DIDN’T die as a police captain proving miguel wrong

This went from a rant about Miles to a rant about Gwen XD

the theme of miles always being terrified, but doing things anyway is so beautiful. even when he’s being followed by thousands of spidersonas, holding his own, hashing a plan that may just work—finally understanding truly how much he can do—he is terrified to let go of that glass.

in both films he jumps. but the glass breaks and shatters. first time because his hands wouldn’t let go. now, because even as he pushes off, his feet want to stick. but he jumps. and he escapes. and his plan works. and he tells his mother, what could i possibly be afraid of now? and tied up, seeing a version of himself he never thought existed, miles—who was never supposed to be spider-man—takes hold of the situation and is not afraid.

because his name is Miles Morales. He was bitten by a radioactive spider meant for someone else, and he has never truly been the only spider-man. but anyone can wear the mask. and maybe next time the glass won’t break.

walker being so much taller than leah allows for the perfect opportunity for annabeth to be completely baffled at how much percy grew over the last year. imagine annabeth punching that bully in the jaw bc he messed with her friend. only to turn around and be face-to-face with percy's chest. and he's oblivious to her confusion bc he's smitten and happy to see his smart, and pretty, and kind, and strong, and badass best friend. and annabeth is just fuming.

“What?” Sabbadin snapped.

Tedesco rolled his eyes. “A cigarette. A normal one…”

“Sure,” Sabbadin said, holding out the open package for him to take one. “I thought you stopped smoking?”

“Well, well, I did. Only when I drink a little too much, I still want to,” Tedesco confessed, lighting it. The flame of the lighter cast dancing shadows upon his face, and Sabbadin failed to look away. “Thank you, Giulio.”

Out the yandere batfam who do you think would be one who would allow the reader to have more freedom? Like going out on walks and whatnot

hmmm a tricky question,,,, i don't think any of the batfam are full-blown 'chain you to the wall in a broom closet so they'll know exactly where you are at all times' types, but bruce and tim are definitely significantly more hesitant to let you leave the mansion chaperoned or otherwise. cas is a little more lenient, trusting her family to take you out for the occasional errand, but jason's definitely the worst. deadbolts on the door, tracker implanted in the side of your neck, driven to a full blown panic-attack by the very thought of you wandering gotham on your own. he's also the most likely to break your legs/cut your tendons to keep you safe and immobilized, even if it would take a little more than a push for him to get there.

dick's probably the most lenient. he wants your relationship to be loving and mutual, and loving couples go on dates :) the only downside is that he can't actually stomach the idea of you spending time or making eye contact with anyone else, meaning that most of your little excursions end in the back of his car, your face pushed into leather seats while he makes you promise over and over again that you'll never ever leave him. you did get boardwalk ice cream before his possessive breakdown though, so there are silver linings.

if I was Fields I would do literally the exact same thing. make my cheating husband invite his work lover to a dinner that I cooked, talk to that lover about our Lutheranism, get messily wine drunk, then embarrass my cheating husband by dropping hints about his previous affairs in front of his lover. who I forced him to invite to dinner. all while saying I was actually cool with all the cheating, but now we ALL need to get tested bc they don't have CONDOMS on the SEVERED FLOOR. fully within the diva threshold. would not change a single thing

you know what I find fascinating about how Helen is talked about in the works in the epic cycle?

everyone has argued to death over whether she was kidnapped, went willingly, was influenced/controlled/threatened by Aphrodite, whatever, but the thing is the actual TEXTS can't seem to make up their minds on Helen. everyone will be cursing Helen's name as an unfaithful wife and destroyer of men in Agamemnon but then Paris will be called a "robber-rapist" which would obviously heavily imply that he stole and assaulted her (plus the part where Clytemnestra basically says "shut the fuck up about Helen she didn't force you to do all that", although how much we're supposed to agree with her is debatable). In Iphigenia In Aulis we're going to war to get REVENGE on the Trojans AND HELEN but then Agamemnon will accuse Menelaus of "lust(ing) only to hold a lovely woman in (his) arms", calls him crazy for wanting her back, and then when Menelaus changes his mind about killing Iphigenia to get the winds back he says "Could I not obtain A perfect marriage elsewhere, if I longed for Marrying? But a brother whom I should Most cherish, I was about to forfeit To gain a Helen, so bartering excellence For evil" which is still pretty spiteful towards Helen but also really fucking weird to say if he only wanted her back to kill or otherwise punish her. Then, in the same play, the Greeks are described as wanting to sail to Troy so "That they may halt the plunder of marriage beds And the rape and seizure of Greek women" which would also imply Helen was, in fact, raped and seized, otherwise why would it be phrased like that and not like, "seduced" or "whisked away" or whatever? In Orestes Elektra and Orestes interpret Helen's actions in the worst possible light while when Helen actually speaks she seems generally sympathetic towards them, distraught and grieving over the whole situation, and claims that she went because Aphrodite made her mad, which could absolutely be a lie, but the thing is we just don't know who's the unreliable narrator here Is this a translation thing? Indicative of a really weird idea of what rape is? Is this an intentional writing choice? This got me to thinking and then I realized that if Menelaus was away when Helen left then he almost certainly doesn't actually know what happened. He didn't see or hear what happened, he doesn't get a chance to talk to Helen and have her explain until after the war, and obviously none of the other Greeks would know for sure either, right? And I just think it is kind of a missed opportunity that adaptations don't really do anything with this kind of unspoken conflict at all. Paris the Musical kind of does (Menelaus believes Helen was abducted when she ended up begrudgingly going with Paris trying to help him to escape) but like, why do all the greek men have one idea of Helen in adaptations? Why don't they argue about it? Why don't they question Menelaus about his motivations more? What if (especially if Aphrodite fucked with her head, as I am one to believe) Helen doesn't even trust herself on her own intentions? What if Menelaus tears himself up debating this with himself every night? Like, could I trust that she wouldn't do this to me and our daughter? Is it better that my wife doesn't love me anymore and is safe with her new lover, or that she does but is trapped against her will having who knows what done to her? Do I know my wife anymore? Did I ever know her in the first place? What if he lays eyes on Helen, his Helen, for the first time in ten years and his sword slips from his grasp as he realizes that yes, of course he knows her, how could he have ever doubted? Or maybe he still doesn't know if he knows her, but maybe he doesn't need to, because he knows that she is tired and scared, and he still loves her, and he just wants to take her back to their home? What then? Hm?
