My Year in Review (Webtoons)

Idk if Webtoon is going to give us a year in review this year or not, but I’m making my own! I don’t talk nearly enough about the other webtoons I’ve read/been reading, so I’m going to use this as an opportunity to at least name them all and talk about why I enjoy them. Who knows - maybe some of my followers/mutuals are also reading what I am and want to gush! 

Frankly, I cannot really rank things because I’m wishy washy and terrible at listing favorites, so this will be in no particular order. Read what I have to say about it, rather than where I ranked it, haha. 

I attempted to limit the number of webtoons I fastpassed on but... uh. I wasn’t good at it. Sometimes I just did it all in one go, sometimes it’s a steady, every single week deal. These such webtoons are denoted with an F. I’m not gonna say me fast passing means it’s a favorite, because sometimes I end up fast passing because I just REALLY want to see what happens next, so... don’t assume it means it’s the best of the best lol. 

Sometimes I get SO into a webtoon that when I hit all of what I can read in English, I’ll go look it up in Korean and try to read THAT lol. I’m not totally good at it yet but it serves as really good Korean practice so I’ll keep it up. These such webtoons are denoted with a K.

I Love Yoo (F) Drama

I’m putting this first because that’s what a lot of people follow me for, and that’s where it deserves. I haven’t dedicated this much time and energy to many fandoms in the last 5 years, and ILY just reigns supreme there. Honestly, it’s exactly what I want out of a character-driven story that explores the complexities of our experiences. I understand why people want more out of it or aren’t fans of the slower pace, but that’s them, not me, and I LOVE it. Without fail, I fast pass this one so I can barf out all my thoughts on reddit and then yell some more over here. I love grey characters, I love complex characters, I love sad characters. Everyone does it for me, I stay winning! 

How to Become a Dragon (F) (K) Fantasy

Lol I say I try to read this one in Korean but lol this one is WAY  out of my league. Eon is a creator I already ADORED from Super Secret, so when HTBaD dropped, I was so excited. I’ve been reading it ever since and it’s been a steady Fast Pass for me. Bari is just... absolutely endearing and the whole of the story is fantastic. There’s a lot of hurt in the past to uncover, a lot of character development to witness, and so much fantastic lore. Admittedly the translations can sometimes be a little difficult, but that hasn’t been a very common occurrence. I say I don’t play favorites but if I did, this would be up there. Genre-wise it’s very much a fantasy, very light on the romance. PLEASE I beg of you guys, go read this and fall for Bari’s adorable Imoogi form! 

Seasons of Blossom (F) (K) Drama, Romance

You wanna know how much I absolutely love this one? I bough physical, Korean copies! Seasons of Blossom is separated into four stories (one for each season, beginning with spring) that all weave together through the characters involved. Spring is sweet and innocent and subverts a few tropes in a fun way. Summer is oppressive and overbearing and I sobbed so much. Full disclosure, summer follows two characters still dealing with the suicide of someone five years prior. Fall is, ironically, a time for starting over, for turning a new leaf, as a character who was bullied in her youth tries to get revenge. I haven’t started winter yet... I’m bad at endings and I’m sad that this will soon be over and I’ll probably binge and catch up on it really soon lol. I genuinely, ardently love this one SO much. Please! It’s beautiful, it’s wonderful, my heart ACHES so much. It’s perfect! 

Romance 101 (F) Romance

The only reason I haven’t read Romance 101 in Korean is because it’s complete and I need to pay to do that and I still haven’t figured out if there’s a way I can actually pay for it lol. It’s one I’ve been considering buying in Korean, though, so... yknow. Romance 101 is SO well done, and I’m obsessed with the art. All of the main characters are so wonderful and endearing, and Bareum makes a delightful main character, a university student who has never made room in her life for love and is thus sorely inexperienced and also sits on the cusp of true adulthood. There’s a love triangle that will tug at your heart, and so many WONDERFUL demonstrations of friendship! That’s something I appreciate a lot - a romance that isn’t about just the romance and acknowledges the importance of platonic love as well. 

See You in my 19th Life (F) (K) Drama, Romance [completed]

I can understand why people have been put off by the “age gap” in this story - when you’re a person who has remembered every single life you’ve lived, you are mature beyond anyone you’ll ever meet. But despite that, I was really, really sucked into this one and absolutely read ahead in the Korean version lol. There’s just something about Jieum that I love so much, and the way the story connects everyone, but most importantly, how much Seoha means to her. There’s also some fantastic family relationships, and character growth that’s fun to watch. Idk I love this one and I felt SO sad when it ended! The spin off stories were sweet additions, though! Everything tied up so nicely I’m not so much left wanting more as much as just knowing I will miss this ensemble cast for months to come. 

Act Like You Love Me (F) Romance 

God, this is one hell of a love song to tropes and cliches, and I say that in a really positive way and mean it! The writing absolutely knows it’s making use of many tropes and is just haven’t unabashed fun being what it is. There’s boss/employee, cohabitation, bouts of fake dating, a love triangle, a touch of fantasy ? Idk this one is so fun to me and I remember feeling really bummed when it had a short hiatus lol. I’m not currently fast passing but I know I will when I’m ready to binge. Like, look the premise is just SO fun - possessing a plushie you can use to make a famous actor do anything you want? Famous actor and normal person falling for each other? It’s just GOOD FUN! 

Odd Girl Out (F) Drama, Romance 

This is another one that I fast-pass off and on. Full disclosure, I much preferred the first season of this story to the current one, but mostly because the first had so much wonderful friendships between the girls. The second season has a lot more focus on Nari’s romances and love triangle and I just don’t currently feel compelled to fast pass but we’ll see when it changes. Don’t get me wrong, I love good romances, but I ALSO am a sucker for wonderful girl friendships. Regardless, it’s a cute coming of age story and the plucky lead is neither meek nor dull, and the running theme of people being drawn to her for the colorful, wonderful person she is continues throughout! 

Our Secret Alliance (F) (K) Romance 

God, this is my catnip. Childhood friends to almost strangers to lovers? Fake dating? Really cute art? Man this is IT! Is the story terribly deep? No. Are the characters wildly complex? Also no. But sometimes I just want to enjoy a sweet, saccharine story filled with really pretty art, and this scratches that exact itch. It feels like it’s coming to an end and I find myself more sad that I expected to be about it. It’s just so endearingly cute to me and I’m gong to miss it when it’s completed! 

She’s Hopeless (F) (K) Drama, Romance 

From the creator of Orange Marmalade comes this story about a high schooler hired to be a chaebol heiress’s secret bodyguard. The catch? Said heiress has a nasty, nasty temper, and it’s his job to try to get her to get along with her classmates and shed her prickly exterior. This is one that I read off and on, catch up on and binge when the mood strikes. I do enjoy me a terrible female character sometimes when her motives are good and her personality is complex and this one does it SO well. It has a nice touch of enemies to lovers lite and some forbidden romance for those who dig that lol. 

Wished You Were Dead (F) (K) Drama, Romance

Man a lot of people dislike this or find it too drawn out but idk I don’t share that sentiment with them. I guess it depends on your patience and what you enjoy lol. Arranged marriage where Emperor Karloi is betrothed to the daughter of his enemy and his Empress wife, Evonne, is actually the child who saved his life many years ago. But she can’t tell him that, because she’s forced to live a lie to keep her mother safe, and a magic spell prohibits her from even attempting to reveal her identity. As you can imagine, it’s created incredibly frustrating situations where poor Evonne, who is really Rue, endures hardship after hardship, while Karloi is unaware that the person who he is so cruel to is the person who sought out his whole life. HEAVY enemies to lovers, like I mean HEAVY. A lot of people are frustrated that Karloi hasn’t figured out Evonne’s identity despite him having nothing but a nagging sense that she reminds him of Rue. It’s one hell of a slow burn and I, for one, enjoy it (though honestly I’m like is this even gonna HAVE a happy ending or is this man gonna die miserable....) 

Rewriting the Villainess (F) (K) Drama, Romance 

I know isekai is really overdone but I never read them lol so this is fresh yet to me. Liza has returned from war only to find her one true love, her fiance, Illian has fallen for the princess of the very kingdom she went to war against. Hearbroken and anguished, she drowns her sorrows in alcohol only to wake up in the modern world, where she finds not only is she a character in an incomplete story written by Doeun, but she now occupies Doeun’s body. And even worse, she finds out she was not the protagonist of the story but, in fact, the villain. Angered by the way the writer planned to complete the story, she intends to ruin the author’s life as she lives it, until the day they can switch back to their respective places but... well, that doesn’t go according to plan. Honestly this one is SO fun and there’s a lot of mystery to unravel about Doeun and how they ended up in this place at all. There’s also some incredibly WONDERFUL exploration in different kinds of loves, and how familial love vs friendship love vs romantic love all differ from each other, which is something I’ve GREATLY enjoyed. The relationship between Liza and Illian is not a very healthy one, which is something she needs to learn for herself, and boy is she loving. It’s DELIGHTFUL, I’m having so much fun with this one! I tried not to fast pass it so I could save my coins but I couldn’t help myself ;~; 

Daytime Star 

Remember my love for saccharine little romances? This one fits the bill! It’s sweet and pretty and not terribly complex but I still find myself having fun and enjoying the story. The art is SOOOO pretty like WOW so pretty! There’s a part of me that wants to fast pass because I do enjoy it but I’m saving it for now! Besides the romance side of things, it’s just really fun watching Yura, a struggling actress, finally get noticed and start to make a name of herself in the acting world, and ngl that’s probably the thing that keeps this from being a story that fades into the nether. I don’t say that in a bad way, either! 

Beyond Virtual Drama Romance [Hiatus]

Full disclosure, this one has been on hiatus for most of the year and I DON’T KNOW WHEN IT’S COMING BACK. There’s not even a Korean version of this?! Even though it’s DEFINITELY a Korean webtoon?! PLEASE I need my fix! I really, really dig this one and I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I wound up! It takes place in a near distant future where the world has fallen into further ruin due to climate change and pollution, where people turned to VR to escape the misery of the real world. In VR they can see flowers where there are none, blue skies, animals that have gone extinct, and live the lavish lives they will never have in reality. They can also participate in events with virtual reality idols, who can beat out any human any day. Sora is one such high schooler who is content to live out her fantasies in VR and go on dates with her idol bias. Her best friend, though, has other ideas, and rejects the world of VR. He’d rather be a real human, in the real world. There’s actually lol a LOT of parallels in Beyond Virtual and I really love the story being woven, and the war against VR, the fight to turn to the real world and appreciate what is tangible and real. Okay, I ALSO enjoy the friends to lovers, so sue me! 

Operation True Love (F) (K) Romance, Drama

Listen. I started this like, last Friday. lmao I JUST started it and I’ve devoured it completely, which isn’t a surprise, but I’m also fast passing it AND have started to read it in Korean AND I’m already feeling itchy for more lol. Suae knows her boyfriend is scum, but she can’t help that she’s still into him. But everything in her life goes sideways when a pink Jellypop phone appears in her locker. It’s not just any phone - it can show the amount of love that anyone will receive in life as well as how much life they’ve already received. And Suae? She’s 0/0. She’s got to convince the creator that she’s not a bug in the system and that she can defy the rules and change her 0 into a 1. And look, if she has to do it by using her scummy boyfriend’s best friend, then so be it. After all, she’s already found out there’s a lot more going on with him and her adopted sister than she thought. AND LISTEN I LOVE IT. I love it SO much. The art is so good, it reminds me a little of I Love Yoo but also maybe a touch of Daytime Star? Suae is WONDERFUL and I absolutely LOVE her antics with Eunhyeok. Raim makes for a really complex, if not awful lol, antagonist and I’m really looking forward to seeing how things play out. Look I’m all caught up with this thing and the Korean version is only one!!!! episode ahead of the English FP what the heck am I to do?! (I translated it. lmao this is my Korean practice now, translating the Korean episode.) 

When the Day Comes Drama Romance [Complete]

The creator, OMOYO, is up there with eon in that when I first started using webtoon, I binged their webtoons. The Story of Those Around Us was fantastic and I really enjoyed OMOYO’s art a lot, so when I finally got started on When the Day Comes, I knew I would be utterly charmed. And I absolutely was! OMOYO has a wonderful kind of humor and even more importantly, presents stories in a really candid way. Ngl this one really tugged at my heart in MANY ways - like I found myself having a sweet little mournful cry one night lol. It’s just. Idk delightful, really well done. I look forward to whatever OMOYO works on next! 

Rumor Has It Romance Drama [Complete]

I don’t really like daily pass webtoons because I’m bad at keeping up with them. I can’t even remember how I started reading THIS one. Boredom and need to read something, probably? It’s very up there in saccharine, sweet little stories, and follows two exes who end up as neighbors as they enter college. It’s a really fluffy story, not incredibly deep, and is a generally fun read! 

No Longer a Heroine Drama Romance [Complete]

I don’t use the term guilty pleasure, but I guess if I did, this would probably be considered one. In some ways, this story is really makjang - it just goes OUT there and there are things in it that genuinely made me go “oh shit I didn’t see that coming”! It’s also very much up there with complex, unlikable female leads. I know the art isn’t very pretty, but if this was a drama, people would eat it up solely FOR the drama. I can’t say a lot without spoiling it but I genuinely like where they went with the romance, I didn’t expect it but it was exactly what I’d hoped for! 

Back to You Drama Romance [Complete] 

Full disclosure, this is now a daily pass and I have not finished this one lol. I can’t say why exactly - I guess I kind had a feeling of where the story is going? I think maybe I could have enjoyed it more WITHOUT the romance, actually? That’s the element I wasn’t here for. The idea of going back in time to change the past, to save a person you deeply cared about? Love that. The idea of messing with time and being messed up back? SO good. The irresistible urge to create big ripples and alter the entire timeline? YESSSSS. But meh @ all the romance that happened, I guess? lol Now that it’s a daily pass idk if I’ll ever finish it? I peeked at the ending when it completed, though! I think if this were a drama, I’d probably have quit it, too, because there were some things that were just too frustrating for me to deal with lol. But it may be someone else’s cup of tea! 

The Star Seekers

LMAO look I don’t expect most of my followers to read or take interest in it but as a fan of TXT lmaooo I am. It’s cute, it’s fun, I like fast passing it, Viken is an ADORABLE rendition of Beomgyu, I’m really into the Star Seekers universe and was hoping this would give me insight to the MV storylines. IT DOESN’T! But I’m still having fun lmaoooooooo 

Special shout out to Super Secret, which is now a daily pass, that I reread again because I will never tire of it. It’s so fluffy and sweet and I just love it. I also have already reread Beyond Virtual because it’s been SO LONG SINCE IT UPDATED PLEASE BRING IT BACK

I'm gonna give you all some tough love and I need you to be good sports about it.

I received a comment on AO3 today asking me to not make the reader wait as long for the next chapter. And that's not the first time I've received a comment like that. I know it's all in good fun, so I'm not even really upset about it, but I do need to drop some truth. I posted chapter 9 on July 12th. I posted chapter 10 on July 22nd.

Bro, that's ten days.

It's not uncommon for writers to take MONTHS to update a single chapter. Some of my favorite authors have made me wait YEARS between chapters, and I do so without complaint because I know just how much effort goes into writing each chapter. I've been pretty consistent about how often I update, and that's a point of pride for me because it took me a long time to build the discipline I needed to work at something long-term this diligently (where my fellow ADHD creatives at?). Writing doesn't just happen. I have to make the choice to sit down and block out all distractions and dedicate consistent time and effort, not just writing each chapter, but editing it and making sure it has a decent emotional payoff and fits in with where I want it the story to go. It's a lot of mental effort. And considering just how much effort it takes, getting a chapter out in ten days is WICKED fast. Now, that being said, I still kind of like when you guys send me comments or messages talking about how impatient you are for the next chapter, especially when the tone is kind of a self-roast for being so impatient. It's actually really cute because I get what it's like to be really excited about a story and want the update RIGHT NOW. I just want to make sure that you also understand that I'm working as fast as I can (and I'm doing this all for free mind you), and I want to feel like that effort is appreciated and acknowledged. Ja feel? I write first and foremost for myself, but I also do it for you guys because I love the community we've built together and I love that people are finding healing through this story. It makes me feel like all the effort is worth it. So I guess, to summarize, go ahead and express how excited and impatient you are for a chapter, just make sure that you're also keeping in mind that writing is hard work, especially multi-chaptered fics, and that I have a life outside of Tumblr that I also need to work towards. And if you ever do get really impatient and need me to post something fast, leaving long, detailed comments about what you liked in the last chapter is the quickest way to jump-start my creativity. Every time I receive one, I get inspired to write more.

Anyways, love you guys. Thanks for being such good sports about everything. Can't wait to show you the next chapter, but it's proving to be a tricky one to get the tone right, so it might be another ten days or so lmao. -River

So I mentioned a book I was getting about plant iditification, and after having to exchange the original one I got for my first choice that I second guessed myself on, I now have a copy of Newcomb's Wildflower Guide by Lawrence Newcomb.

I really like the key system for identification, because it's extremely easy to follow the steps to get to pages quickly. Which was the whole intention of the book, so we'll done lol.

Of course, because I thought I knew what the name of the plant I wanted to first identify with the book was, I might have been a bit too overconfident. With that confidence, Steven and I went for a walk down to the park to do some iditifying. And by Steven and I, I really just mean I was identifying because Steven was just there to keep me company. I'm not sure if it was more suspicious that my chonky goblin ass was squat down infront of a plant with a book for 40 minutes while a tall beadered man just kinda hovered around, or if it would have been better for me to be alone 😅 Either way I quickly realized I'm an idiot and should not have picked a plant known to be easy confused with like 5 other plants as my first attempt.

After about an hour I decided to accept mild defeat on this one. I'm confident it is not Poison Hemlock because there is no purple splotches on the stem at all. I decided that the description for Hemlock Parsley was probably correct, but one thing was giving me a hang up on it. The description specifically says "smooth stem, unspotted." And the bita leading up to the umbels are all smooth, but the main stem of the plant is covered in little hairs. It also says "Cold swamps, wet woods, and riverbanks. Summer and Fall." There is a ton of this stuff around the area which is mostly a wet wooded area, right near the river. Though it's still currently spring in Ontario. It's been pretty warm so perhaps that's why it's already blooming, but it's just added another layer of confusion for me.

So of course I decided to consult an app. PictureThis insists it's Cow Parsley, but looking that up online as it's not in the book, it says there is purple in the stems and it's got fine hairs all over. It's definitely got hairs, but no traces of purple except maybe a bit in the joints?

Though the flowering time is April to June so that lines up. Over all I'm going to agree with the app, because I might just be misinterpreting where the hairs stop in terms of whats considered hair or smooth. But hey, botanical tumblr feel free to chime in lmao

I have no intention of eating or preparing this plant in any way, or really any plants I identify, I just found the concept interesting and my little ADHD goblin brain has hyperfixated on it now. But I do know the importance of being 100% sure of your identification if you are foraging wild plants. For me right now I'm just bothered that I was unsuccessful on my very first test 😒 But I refuse this to be another "I wasn't immediately good at it so I hate it and refuse to do it again." thing.

I'm going to try a few more times in the garden today I think. See if I can identify anything here despite them not being wild flowers. I'd like to try on what I'm fairly certain are poppies, because that's what my mom says they are. But I don't know if they'll be in there since I don't think they are wild. We'll see, as soon as the sun moves a bit farther along in the sky because when I was out taking photos od the raspberries flowers, just standing there for 2 minutes I was already roasting.

Speaking of raspberry flowers...

There's quite a few, but I'm a bit worried since they're looking a bit dried up? I should look that up since I don't know if that means they're fecked or they're gonna be fruiting soon 🤷

Also some other flower progress for this update, it seems the peony bush has one. single. bloom. Which I suppose is a 100% increase from last year. I'll be checking it every day cause if I miss it blooming, I'm gonna be pissssssed.

Lastly my stargazer lily is still beetle free, praise the developer. I'm just gonna keep checking it for eggs and powdering it till it blooms.

i did not know you were vegan. odd question but do you have any tips for like starting out? easy recipes? please feel free to ignore this! idk if its rude to ask.

You're all good, I'm happy to talk about this! I think I mentioned something like veganism is a bit non-negotiable for me in a life partner, which is kinda badly worded because it's just the not being an omnivore that's non-negotiable and mostly because I personally find the idea of kissing someone that eats meat everyday for the rest of my life very gross. I'm not strictly vegan, I kinda go back and forth on eating eggs and dairy based on how much I'm struggling with eating in general. I've been completely vegetarian for like 12? years though.

This post ended up being super long so I'm putting a keep reading here lmao I guess I have some thoughts

I generally don't consider veganism to be the be all end all of ethical consumption, or that the onus to make ethical choices should really be on individual consumers, and I'm not a fan of the expectations of purity some vegans have. AND there's a lot of classism, ableism, racism etc. in the vegan movement in general. So uhm, I think any reduction in the amount of animal products people are eating that are coming from large scale animal agriculture is good, and making an effort to consume more plant-based foods and foods from ethical sources is worthwhile, if it's something that works for you.

A big part of my motivation is ethical (animal welfare, environment etc.) but the main reason I've found it really easy to not eat meat for this long is I just find it super gross. Like it's not even food to me at all and sometimes I watch people eating meat and my brain edits in horror movie effects over it, which is kinda fun of it, lil bit whimsical in a fucked up kinda way. So starting out, if you can find a way to find non-vegan foods extremely gross that'll definitely help lmao. Also just like, go easy on yourself and let the transition be gradual and practical and whatever it needs to be for you.

I'm probably not that helpful with recipes, I cook a lot, but I'm pretty lazy about it and tend to cycle through the same few things and just make it up as I go because my brain doesn't like being told what to do by a recipe I guess. There's a bunch of fancy packaged vegan foods that are pretty impressive replicas of nonvegan food, but they're generally expensive, and idk what the environmental and ethical impacts of them are, considering they're processed and packaged and shipped from wherever. But yeah if you can afford them (and they're available where you are, I'm in Australia) they are delicious and make the transition a bit easier.

Anyway, here's a few things that I kinda live on that are easy and pretty cheap and can be versatile enough to be constructed from whatever you've got on hand

- Rice paper rolls with tofu, vegetables, vermicelli rice noodles, whatever's in your fridge at the time

- Variations of roast vegetable, hummus, tofu, just like, in a bowl idk. I regularly just roast a bunch of seasonal vegetables and put them in things like pasta or sandwiches for the next few days. I also grow some of my own veggies and herbs so I usually have them on hand (obvs not an accessible option for everyone).

- Wraps with some kind of veggie burger, salad, whatever condiments you're into, can pretty much shove whatever in there

- Vegan lasagna is probably the best thing I make, just layers of roast vegetables in tomato-based sauce between pasta and heaps of vegan Béchamel sauce on top, there's probably good recipes online, I always just wing it

- Pasta, so much pasta. Lots of sauce options, I usually go for heaps of veggies and either tomato based sauce, pesto (I usually make my own), or just garlic oil. Also do the same thing with rice, always good whatever's in the fridge options, can't really go wrong here.

- Indian curries, I'm still learning how to make them well and I honestly kinda suck but they're some of my favourite dishes and there are lots of good vegan options

THANK FUCKING GOD is all i have to say. the one issue i always had with this scene, and in general how the williams acted after the reunion, is the fact that none of them apologized (that we saw) for the way they were acting. i can understand why they acted the way they did, but i could never forgive the fact that none of them seemed to acknowledge their shitty behavior. (side note, i know noah kinda did during text, but i’m focusing more on things we actually saw during the clip). i was so fucking relieved when i saw this clip. i knew they were gonna have him apologize, because it made sense. i also loved how, even though he was gonna leave without talking to her, and break things off for good (however shitty that decision may have been) he couldn’t go through with it without apologizing first. someone say character development? we love her.

now the ‘you didn’t trust me so i don’t wanna trust you’ line. i admit, i’m not the biggest fan of that, and i will always, always criticize the content i’m watching. after reading a few posts and opinions, i managed to figure out how i’m feeling about this one. so, let’s be honest here, the line’s not great. what makes it a tiny bit better, is the delivery (kudos to gian). the way it was said, it was supposed to seem... forced, i guess is the word i would use. when i heard it, it sounded so rushed, like something he said because he couldn’t stand being there anymore, and he needed a way out, a way to escape. it sounded like a lie. (much like in ep 5, when he apologized about his brother and said some bs about how he was depressed) it sounded like bs because giancarlo did it on purpose, to make us understand that this is not how he is actually  feeling. i don’t know if this made sense, but it was how i managed to interpret it lmao. feel free to disagree :)

i liked how they had ele act during the scene. when he apologized, she didn’t say anything, some bullshit like how ‘it’s okay’ (bc it’s not). she just nodded. accepted his apology because it was needed, and moved on. also, i liked the loving roast she gave him about his dumb choice to leave lmao. she was right, and she said it.

now what absolutely BROKE me was when she tried to put his hand on her waist and tried to kiss him. you could just tell how much it was killing him not to be able to touch her, you could see it in his eyes, in his body language, he was so close to giving in.... but he didn’t. 

i think you all know that i’m not the biggest fan of the ‘walk away and then run back’ scene. but here i... didn’t mind it? it seemed less dramatic, more them, the way he slowly approached her, still unsure of what he’s doing. i liked how when ele turned around, she let out this huge ass sigh like ‘this fucking idiot’. it seemed much more genuine imo idk.

the kiss, oh god the kiss. it ruined me. it felt like after being suffocated for so long and then finally being able to breathe in. it felt exactly like a breath of fresh air. don’t even get me started on the hug because oh holy Shit. their little family is finally together again.

another aspect that made this clip for me was the ele and filo dynamic. i was complaining about the lack of brother and sister scenes just yesterday, and god did skam italia deliver. i loved everything about this. their hug at the end made my heart go whoosh. also the way he tried to literally peel her from him after seeing edo lowkey made me laugh out loud lmao.

finally, the acting. the acting is what really got me. holy shit giancarlo and benni fucking delivered. again. i mean, i knew they would, cause they’ve been doing it all season, but still. i am amazed every time i see them on screen together. giancarlo delivered every single fucking emotion edo was feeling and it was perfect. i understood everything without having him say the words. and seeing ele cry like that, grasping onto filo with her dear life.... wow benni deserves an oscar for that alone :)

so, all in all, if you’ve managed to get through this mess of a post, i thank you, and you are braver than the us marines lmao. 

once again, i know i complain about this show a lot, and most of the time it’s all in good fun, i really wanna let you guys know how fucking much this show and this season especially means to me. it’s literally my home. these characters are so close to my heart, and i am so happy they’re doing them justice. this show has its flaws, and believe me, i’m the first to point them out, but damn it, i loved how they handled this. i really really do.

now, cue the fluff!

1. What’s the first story you remember writing?

i was kinda late to the writing game, and the first big venture into creative writing i remember was running a hunger games roleplay blog, so i had to write the updates on those lol there was also a book i started writing in a similar genre around that time, but i don’t remember much about it

2. How has your taste in books changed since childhood?

umm i mean it’s matured somewhat i suppose, but i’ve always enjoyed a good fantasy or mystery

3. Do you see any similarities to your favorite books in your work? If yes, what are they?

i love a found family, so i like to write about those when i can

4. What sort of music inspires you?

to inspire ideas/creativity, i like music that sounds like it could be used in a movie or trailer, kinda big and epic or with emotional shifts. for actually writing, i need music i don’t know or without lyrics, otherwise i’ll start singing along and get distracted

5. Favorite book?

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

6. Favorite mythology (Greek, Norse, etc.)?

greek is the one i know best, so i’d have to say that. but anything with mythological/religious basis interests me

actually if we’re including “religions” (whatever the distinction between religion/mythology may be), christianity/catholicism is what i was raised on, so i know and like to play off of a lot of that usually

7. Dream vacation?

one someone else is paying for lol

um if i’m going with something new, i’ve always wanted to visit japan

so i’m actually currently revamping an old script of mine, and for the life of me i cannot remember what sparked the initial concept for it. but what made me want to go back and rework it was watching Fleabag (which is amazing btw)

a mix? i guess. i’m good with either as long as whatever it is is done well

in my own writing i tend to mix them a bit, just because i think life and stories are never quite that simple (at least the stories i tell) so there’s usually some satisfaction amidst devastation

Skam NL episodes 4 and 5 reaction

This is incredibly late but there was no way I was not going to write about Engel’s detour into waxing hell.

Episode 4

Clip 1 - Piesiepoepselaar

Isa and Kes are lying together in the morning and it’s very serene. He’s had the same nightmare as Jonas did in the original, though I think the context is different … russ is like a thing that Jonas objects to on principle, would Kes be against just taking a city trip?

He’s like, “You took off your shirt and made out with everyone, boys and girls.” Lmao, I don’t think Isa is going to get that wild in Tallinn.

Isa replies that she’ll only take off her shirt for Kes. So this isn’t really a hint of an actual problem or any condescension on his part, they’ve re-purposed this exchange into some purely flirty interaction.

This cute moment is interrupted by Isa’s mom unexpectedly popping in. She calls her daughter “pissing pooper”? Hands down the best/worst nickname I have heard a parent call their child. And of course Kes loves it.

Clip 2 - Orgy preparation

Isa gets a call from “Pap” soooo her dad is still kind of in the picture?

Engel bounds up to Isa, she looks very happy to see her. And when Janna and Imaan come up, she also looks happy to see them. Engel is so cute.

Except LMAO, GOD. She addresses Imaan with “Salaam-Alaikum,” and seems a little proud of herself, as if she Googled “how to speak Muslim” over the weekend. So I guess instead of being an outright exclusionary racist, she’s going to be like … a well-intentioned white ally who goes too far and ends up othering her Muslim friend by not treating her the same as the non-Muslims? That’s a pretty interesting take. It certainly puts Engel in a better light than Vilde, since she is trying to be inclusive rather than rejecting Imaan, but it also explores Imaan’s struggle with having to deal with people treating her differently than her peers, or changing their behavior toward her since she’s a Muslim.

Imaan is just like “.... Hi.” I feel like at some point she’s going be like, “Look, you can just treat me like you’d treat anyone else.”

Janna starts coughing, and at first I thought she was trying to salvage the awkward moment, but she’s actually gesturing for Engel to look over yonder because GUESS WHAT, a certain dude is climbing the stairs.

Dutch William has a very long coat and seems more like an artsy edgy hipster kid, maybe, than a regular king-of-the-school fuckboy. His head is down so we don’t get a full view of his face, it’s like he’s ~mysterious and gives no fucks.

That blond dude from the party, Gijs, is part of Dutch William’s (Noah’s) crew, of course, and nods in recognition to Isa. They’re like, HOLY SHIT, Isa, what happened there?

Apparently one of them (Gijs or Noah) the wildest parties, with orgies. And not some weak-ass orgies where people sit in the hot tub together. Full-on power orgies with naked bodies. Janna sure knows her orgy classifications.

Engel’s facial expressions when Janna mentions orgies, lmao. This little frown.

The girls are like, “There’s a party this Friday,” and Isa’s like “...OK?” Imaan has to explain that Janna and Engel want Isa to flirt with the guy so they can get in to the party. She takes Isa’s phone and does her thing. Well, that’s interesting because Imaan doesn’t seem so invested personally in going to the party? I mean, there’s no real benefit to their city trip. Is she doing it because Janna and Engel want to? Like she wants to be in with these girls and have friends?

Janna is amused and laughs at Imaan’s liking all of Gijs’ pics. Engel just seems stunned. A Muslim did that???? Maybe she had Imaan all wrong. Maybe she needs to consult Google again.

Clip 3 - BUY YOUR OWN GODDAMN FRIES

Isa, Kes, and Lucas go out for food. Isa is the only one to order fries, and when she asks if they want fries, they’re like nahhhh. IMMEDIATELY my bullshit detector went off. They’re going to steal her fucking fries, aren’t they?

At one point the word “EVEN” is visible through the window, heh.

Lucas has injured his left hand, which I am assuming is a thing the actor did IRL and they had to explain it into the story. Kes roasts Lucas about his injury (which happened while skateboarding) and Lucas is like, “At least I take risks.” Yeah, some of those risks will apparently involve fucking up your friends’ relationship?

Kes asks Isa if they’re going to hang out at her place, I am assuming just the two of them, while Lucas gives Kes a long look. Actually, those are some high-quality Looks that Lucas has been serving to Kes. Make sure this show gets to season 3, okay? So he can put his pining face to good use.

Kes says the whole thing about Isa’s mom not knowing about him, and that Isa is ashamed of him, and Lucas is like, well, she’s right!

But of course Gijs is now sending her messages about Isa’s IG stalking. Just as Kes is offering to cook for her and her mom. Isa, let him cook for you! That’s more proactive than any Jonas has offered yet, right?

Gijs is turned on by Isa stalking him. You know, I’ve never just how many kinks the P-Chrises have, like he’s into nerds, being stalked, pretending to be the Eva’s dad/mom/whatever ... he’s just up for anything.

Lucas mentions that Isa has too many new friends, maybe even a new boyfriend, and THAT is some snake-ass shit, planting that seed out there. Even if he’s just talking shit and kidding. He doesn’t know he’ll be kinda right, but man, will Kes remember that when shit hits the fan? Kes seemed so indifferent though, like he’s all “lady friends” and not taking it seriously. 

I WAS FUCKING RIGHT, THEY STEAL HER GODDAMN FRIES. Taking advantage of her distraction while messaging Gijs. 

This is the realest shit though, like nothing Jonas and Isak said about Eva’s involvement in russ compared to this disrespect. Teenage boys are the WORST.

But yeah, there’s not nearly as much putting down of Isa’s friends or activities (since who is gonna be like “it’s so CAPITALISTIC that you want to take a fun trip to a city”?) apart from some passive-aggressiveness about Kes not meeting Isa’s mom and Isa being too popular. Still, it feels less mean, and Isa didn’t seem as attacked. 

Clip 4 - The most important conversation I’ve ever heard

The title of this clip was “full bush baby” and I was like … is that really going to refer to what I think it is? Like either we are talking about a small primate, or someone’s private hedge maze.

I love Janna looking like a hot mess in every scene. Like she literally rolled out of her bed, which is an ostrich nest, and went to school. She’s telling a story about opening a beer in class while Engel looks bothered about something in the background.

OH MY GOD, Engel looks troubled not because of any angsty Noah pining or Imaan drama or any of what you’d expect, but because she shaved her pubic hair and it itches. WE STAN.

…. Is this taking the place of the birth control conversation??? Instead of Engel asking about birth control, she wants the girls to tell her how they remove their pubic hair? 

I am not remotely surprised that Janna is a full bush baby.

Imaan saying she dyes hers red, white, and blue = MY LOVE.

Engel takes that completely seriously judging by her confused little face. Engel’s life is 90% confusion.

Janna says if she waxes, she can wax a lightning bolt. Please be a Harry Potter reference. (You know, I’m sure wizards have hair removal spells and all, but I’m imagining someone being like ACCIO PUBES and ripping out everything at once.)

Engel is nervous about waxing. Oh my God, instead of the nurse, are they going to go for a bikini wax together?????

Isa gets a text. Turns out they’re going to the party! Engel gets excited and starts throwing out outfit possibilities.S he rambles a bit and then Imaan does the “shhh, you talk too much” moment. 

Now it feels a little out of place, because Engel, while not behaving perfectly, has been way less of an ass to Imaan? And I get that this is for Engel’s own preservation, sort of, but they’re not trying to gain social capital at the level that Vilde and Sana were. The OG girl squad wanted to attract cool people to their bus and hook up with popular boys; NL girl squad isn’t concerned with getting cool people on their trip, and while they want to go to parties, they don’t have this firm objective of hooking up with the popular dudes. So the moment seemed a bit out of nowhere. I mean, Engel rambling about her outfits is tedious, but harmless.

Imaan has some gorgeous lashes, by the way.

Clip 5 - This is a very serious show

Oh my God, they DID go for a bikini wax. So is the state of Engel’s pubic hair going to be a plot point? Does she want it to look groomed for him? 

Okay, I’m laughing that Norwegian-style bush is a heart (ALT ER LOVE), French pubes are a mustache, and Dutch hedges are … flames? A flower? A flower for the ladygarden.

THE GRAVE IMPORTANCE OF THIS SCENE. The music and the cherub mural really add to the atmosphere.

Janna talks about an ass wax because of course she does.

I love that you hear a scream from the other room. Perfect.

I laughed out loud that Engel just shakes her head and runs. And that Imaan puts her arms around the girls and eggs them on.

I like Skam to have a plot and all but I would thoroughly enjoy 10 episodes of just random calamities in pubic hair removal.

Clip 6 - Orgy time

OH DAMN, I LOVE

This is my favorite episode 4 (or equivalent) power walk other than the original. I LOVE it. The song choice! The girls look like they’re having a blast. Engel jumping on Liv’s back!!! Imaan yelling in sync with the rooster crying!!! 

ESPECIALLY with the juxtaposition of this badass power walk, the girls getting hyped and feeling cool on the way to the party - because yeahhhh!!!! Young and free, bitches!!!!! - with the pause where they’re actually standing in front of the door, debating over who has to ring the bell. That’s utterly beautiful, I love it. Expectations vs. reality right there. 

Liv being like “It’s open,” lol.

Engel knows Olivia and company, I don’t think they said how?? Because we knew how Vilde knew Ingrid. But I mean, they go to school together, soooo. (Or did Engel get kicked off a city trip group?)

Janna, you promised an orgy, and this is a bunch of teenagers drinking and dancing in a basement. The clothes are most definitely on.

I was spoiled for Janna’s making out with a girl, but I still got hella excited when she and this girl were sticking out their tongues at each other.

Lmao, is Engel rambling about her car malfunctions to Noah? Maybe Imaan was right to shush her.

Also, Engel’s dad is in the picture. Or was, at a certain point.

Okay I don’t know if maybe this is fashionable for Dutch kids, but I love that Noah is wearing this baggy old man shirt.

JANNA AND THAT GIRL GOING TO TOWN, YESSSSSSSS

So in terms of Skam remake wlw content, I believe we have:

Skam France: Alexia is bi. Of course I appreciate this but they haven’t really spotlighted it outside of like one or two comments, and they don’t really integrate her sexuality into the story or into the dialogue even when it would be relevant (which is a big problem with Skam France as a whole). It’s canon by the actress’ Word of God.

Druck: Mia is bi. In canon she “doesn’t like labels” and is shown to make out with Hanna, though that was for telling off Alexander. Bi by word of God.

Skam Austin: Shay takes Isak’s place in the story, having a crush on Megan which is her character’s motivation. This is the biggest wlw content, clearly, since Shay will hopefully get her own season. The character is a lesbian and her sexuality plays a role in the story, plus I’m pretty sure the actress is a lesbian herself (and is a black lesbian so we have intersectional diversity).

Skam NL: Janna makes out with a girl at a party. HOPEFULLY she isn’t straight and this isn’t just a drunken makeout because girls kissing at a party is hot. I hooooope.

Hmmm, you know what? I actually buy Imaan’s throwing water at Olivia a lot more, because Engel has at least tried to be nice to Imaan. Like I understand that Sana is fiercely loyal and once she’s on your team, she’s with you 110%, so once she’s with the girl squad, she’s ride or die. But assuming Imaan was throwing water at Olivia because Olivia called Engel a slut, I get why. Engel has been awkward and othered Imaan but she’s tried to be nice. (But for Engel, you know she’s going to be like WTF?)

I love this closing song as they run away into the night!

Is it wrong that I kind of like Noah so far? Because I get that he’s likely going to come with all of William’s bullshit, but ... he’s fucking weird, man. 

Episode 5

Clip 1 - Making a family party awkward

Kes’ sister is a cutie!

Oh, I love that we got a little glimpse of his family? His mom, and his grandparents.

This really changes the tone of this scene from the original, because Eva goes over and encounters Jonas when he’s just hanging out with his friends and being passive-aggressive, and it felt like having the boys there made Jonas ramp up his attitude. Kes appears to be relaxed, he’s having a good time with his family. I wonder if these are the actor’s real relatives? The boys look like they could be his brothers.

But Kes does get in a passive-aggressive comment about her friends, and he’s been ignoring her for a few days.

Also, Lucas isn’t part of this moment where they’re ganging up on Isa, when the Isak is typically snickering at what’s happening.

We cut inside where relatives are having a pleasant time while the Youths fight. We don’t hear their argument but I mean, we know what they’re talking about.

Kes is like, “I forgot about the dinner,” as if he’s not upset, which makes Isa storm out, and his family notices that she’s upset.

Isa is out on the street and she once again puts in her earbuds and listens to music to get out her feelings. I like that as a stress release/coping tactic/whatever you want to call it for her.

This is a Sigrid song, by the way! “Strangers,” a totally appropriate song for relationship dysfunction and dismantling the perfect movie romance. Really interesting with Isa’s somewhat romanticized view of love - sometimes you just know, that’s how it’s supposed to be, etc.

Is Kes going to run out after her?

Nope, he doesn’t run after her. Not like in the movies. Isa just does a walk down the street. She’s not happy but it seems like listening to music steadies her a bit and gives her an outlet for her emotions so that she’s not a total mess.

Clip 2 - Engel does not know how the pill works, sigh

The title of this clip was Het is Zover and there was a still of Liv so I was like … are we finally headed down this f/f romcom route? Het is Over? (I know, I know, it has an actual meaning in Dutch.) But it ended up referring to something heterosexual, lmao.

I like Isa’s little toucan key chain.

Isa is not in a good mood, Liv looks fondly at her girl and asks about Kes. Liv knows what’s up with 17-year-old boys.

Engel pops up and says it’s time for her and Noah to go to the bone zone. Isa is like, that was fast. So I guess they are going down this sex storyline; the wax was a fun bonus.

Engel being like “I know It’s Time because I DMed with Noah all weekend and he’s perfect” - God help us.

Engel asks for the pill like she’s asking for ibuprofen, and when she says eh, it’ll be nothing then, Liv is like nuh uh, you’re going to the doctor. Thank you, Liv.

Engel gets them to agree to go by offering a bottle of wine each. When Isa tells Liv that she (Liv) doesn’t even drink, Liv is like, two for you, right? WHOOOOOOA. True love right there.

I had the worst thought and wondered if Engel’s failure to get her pubes waxed is going to lead to Noah making a shit comment about them later, like when Engel confronts him. Because teenage boys think girls should be completely hairless, like porn stars or babies! 

Clip 3 - Isa can’t sleep

Isa is watching a video on her phone when she gets a notification about something her dad posted. It’s a little kid getting a swimming certificate, so I’m guessing that’s her dad’s new family.

Isa gets up to go sit on her mom’s bed. She asks for a foot rub, which her mom gives her, until her mom starts asking about Olivia and Tess. Then the feet come back up to Isa’s chest.

Perhaps that’s why Isa opens up to her and tells her she has a boyfriend. When she tells her mom his name is Kes, her mom doesn’t comment on it being Olivia’s boyfriend’s name or anything, so maybe she didn’t know Kes and Olivia dated? 

Isa asks her mom whether she thought she and her dad would be together forever, and then when she change her mind. Isa’s mom says that sometimes things go differently from how you expected. I really like this scene. It goes in with Isa “just knowing” that you’re meant to be with someone, as mentioned in episode 2, and then this reality that crashes in on you. It’s awesome that they tied in these elements of Isa’s absent father and divorced/separated parents, Isa’s relationship with her mom who’s locked out of certain elements in her life, and Isa’s relationship with Kes to the overall idea of being with someone forever. I think Isa questioning the nature and longevity of love could end up being a really satisfying part of her arc. I can’t wait to see the final clip of the season; I hope they modify her speech to Kes so that it fits with all these moments and what she’s learned.

She gets back into bed and apologizes to Kes for being a bitch sometimes, because obviously she doesn’t want their relationship to end, and then stares at the ceiling with that one damn glow in the dark shooting star.

Clip 4 - Doctor visit

The girls go to the doctor with Engel. Liv and Imaan entertain themselves by playing with a model of a torso. Kes and Isa make up via text, he says he loves her even when she’s angry.

I love that Engel looks small in that big chair against the giant window, truly mimicking how overwhelmed she must be feeling.

Where’s Janna? I have to say that I look forward to her reactions on anything vagina-related. 

I guess she had to miss the fun because she had to make up for being late to German, but it’s really cool how Imaan volunteered to join them considering I think the Sanas usually sit this excursion out.

The doctor comes out and IT’S A MAN THIS TIME??? Oh fuck!

I mean I know plenty of women don’t have a problem with a male OB-GYN, but for a girl who’s perhaps afraid to get a bikini wax, I think she would be a little shy about talking about birth control with a dude.

This doc is handsome, not gonna lie. I can’t imagine if that would make it more or less awkward. I do think that it’s less awkward with your friends, so good call, Engel.

The doc is asking Engel some basic questions and Engel answers more confidently than I expected, so good for her. Imaan rats out Engel by saying she’s only known the guy for a week. Well, maybe it’s not the wisest choice, Imaan, but that means Engel should definitely be on birth control!

Liv also shares that Noah sleeps with the whole school, and the doc mentions that the pill only helps with pregnancy, not STDs. Bless him. I mean he’s just doing his job, but bless. This is a good message to include on the show.

OH MY GOD when that doc brought out the dildo for the condom demonstration. He was completely matter-of-fact and professional but geeeeez I would have found this to be the most embarrassing thing at 16.

Clip 5 - CONDOMS, ENGEL, CONDOMS CONDOMS CONDOMS

The girls evaluate condom choices. Strawberry, banana, glow-in-the-dark. Don’t get the banana ones. I love real bananas but artificial banana flavor on anything is a gamble. 

I can’t tell, who said that king-sized wasn’t for Noah? Janna? I want to give her an award.

This clip was so short but I loved it! Just sweet and funny, wonderful girl squad dynamic, adorable.

When Isa calls Kes, it absolutely sounds like he was at a party with the level of background chatter. You hear Olivia’s voice clearly but they’re definitely surrounded by people.

Of course Kes is not coming, and Isa’s mom overhears enough on the phone conversation to realize. She tells her that they can eat, just the two of them. I really like Isa’s mom, she’s cute.

General Comments/Social Media

Engel stuck Liv’s own song on their Tallinn playlist and Liv’s like, time to delete that! 

I love Janna naming the group chat weird stuff, and everyone acknowledging that group chat names are never normal.

This remake makes my heart so warm! The girl squad is so lovely and fun. I adored the pubic hair side plot, lmao, and the twists on the doctor visit and the condom retrieval. Little moments like that with the girls have made the dynamic so entertaining.

As for the boys, I think Lucas is a fantastic Isak. Kes has his typical Jonas S1 dickhead moments, but he’s also got charm, and God help me but I am enjoying Noah’s whatever-the-fuck-ness. Like I’m aware he’s going to be a creep, but currently I like taking the piss out of him and his wardrobe and attitude. 

As I mentioned previously, I think they’re doing some great moments with Isa’s character arc and tying in her family issues to her relationship issues, and having her talk about love or question love in the abstract.

1. the chain // fleetwood mac - lyrically, i feel like there’s this really interesting push and pull going on that echoes roscoe and rita’s relationship a bit. musically, it’s kind of just an angsty power ballad and that feels very roscita to me. overall, it’s hard to describe but it just evokes this gritty, emotional feeling that, in my opinion, reflects this particular ship really well. 2. cherry pie // warrant - ok let’s be honest, this song is dirty as hell. do i have to explain it any further? let’s just talk about it musically then, haha. it’s a JAM. the drums just make you want to head-bang even though you’re a 22 year old nerd that most definitely was not born in the 1980s, but i could definitely see this song associated with roscoe and rita and their overall aesthetic. 3. the good, the bad and the dirty // panic! at the disco - woah look a modern song! now, can i just paste the entire chorus as my explanation for why this song fits these two? because just look: if you wanna start a fight / you better throw the first punch / make it a good one / and if ya wanna make it through the night / you better say my name like / the good, the bad, and the dirty -- i mean COME ON. besides being lyrically perfect, this song is also a total jam as well, so enjoy haha. 4. little black dress // one direction - WHAAT one direction? ok bear with me for a sec. despite their hard outer shells, i personally think roscoe and rita are hopeless romantics at heart. i could be DEAD wrong, but this task is about my interpretation so yolo. but anywho, this song is cute and catchy and my secret filmmaker brain can just picture an intimate moment happening in a public setting between these two set to this song. 5. novocaine // fall out boy - ok back to the emo songs! lmao. i don’t wanna say the lyrics necessarily reflect roscoe and rita’s relationship, but this song just screams badass to me and i had to include it. especially musically, it also just fits within the hypothetical movie soundtrack in my head. it’s just so punchy, but vocally great and i think it definitely belongs on this list. 6. paris (ooh la la) // grace potter & the nocturnals - this is SUCH A RITA SONG. it’s unapologetically feminine without giving in to any gross stereotypes, it’s vocally just wonderful, and the lyrics scream rita in my opinion: if I was a man I'd make my move > if I was a blade I'd shave you smooth > if I was a judge I'd break the law -- beautiful, but ready to cut you if need be. 7. seven nation army // the white stripes - and this is a roscoe song through and through. i don’t wanna paste the entire song in here, but the lyrics are very roscoe and i feel like they reflect this path he’s been on and where he’s at currently pretty well. i could also totally see this as the backing track to roscoe going to town on some idiot that messed with rita, it just feels like a fightin’ song okay? i’m not saying roscoe loves to solve every problem with his fists, because he’s a very well-rounded three dimensional character, but there’s an anger and a fury behind his eyes that i think ties right into this song. also the music video is cool as fuck!
