Researchers find high magnetic field facilitates novel intrinsic ferromagnetic polar metals
Researchers have designed a novel oxide material, Ca3Co3O8, through atomic precision manipulation of correlated oxides. It demonstrated a remarkable combination of properties—ferromagnetism, polar distortion and metallicity, which shines a spotlight on polar metals and sparks significant scientific interest. This achievement was published in Nature Materials. The collaboration included Prof. Sheng Zhigao from Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Professor Yu Pu's team from Tsinghua University, and users of the Steady High Magnetic Field Facility (SHMFF) at HFIPS. In traditional understanding, electric polarization and magnetic order in materials were seen as mutually exclusive. However, the concept of polar metals was proposed, suggesting that these materials could exhibit both electric polarization and metallic properties simultaneously.

Ship Bingo: Zoro + Perona
Tumblr media
ship bingo! // accepting!
I don't feel like I love a lot of One Piece ships, but Zoro and Perona is way up there on the list of ones I do really like! I think they're so much fun and enjoy their bickering banter a lot - and I think Perona was really sad to see him go after the time skip. Overall I think it's a super cute ship and has a lot of potential! Probably falls somewhere in my top 5 ships if I ever sit down to figure those out. Thanks for asking!

Sustainable Recycling of Rare-Earth Elements from NdFeB Magnet Swarf
Sustainable Recycling of Rare-Earth Elements from NdFeB Magnet Swarf: Techno-Economic and Environmental Perspectives Rare-earth elements (REEs) are increasingly susceptible to supply risks due to their limited geographical availability and growing demand in clean energy applications such as neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets used in electric vehicles and wind turbines. When NdFeB magnets are…

Assumption: Your magnetic field disrupts a compass.
– @pastmyprimape
Funnily enough: no! Well, not unless it's an EXTREMELY sensitive one and then only a tiny bit. I'm non-magnetic.
Fun fact: some stainless steels aren't magnetic.

Ferromagnetic Core Memory
Tumblr media
64x64 bit ferrite ring (core memory) memory that can store 4096 bits of information. In the 50's and 60's, computers the size of a room had such memories. They were usually handmade.
The picture above shows the memory used in the Russian Saratov-2 (PDP-8 copy) computer. Check these out too if you are interested in retro computing

Ultrafast laser pulses could lessen data storage energy needs
A discovery from an experiment with magnets and lasers could be a boon to energy-efficient data storage. "We wanted to study the physics of light-magnet interaction," said Rahul Jangid, who led the data analysis for the project while earning his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at UC Davis under associate professor Roopali Kukreja. "What happens when you hit a magnetic domain with very short pulses of laser light?" Domains are areas within a magnet that flip from north to south poles. This property is used for data storage, for example in computer hard drives. Jangid and his colleagues found that when a magnet is hit with a pulsed laser, the domain walls in the ferromagnetic layers move at a speed of approximately 66 km/s, which is about 100 times faster than the speed limit previously thought.

Ship Bingo: Law + Monet!
Tumblr media
ship bingo! // accepting!
Y'know, strangely, this is just one of those ships that I have like... no thoughts on at all? I guess it just didn't occur to me to see it as one or register that it was even a thing. Like I know Monet made the one "oh? is it a date?" flirty comment and I may attribute this to my irl inability to notice people flirting but I just literally never thought about this during my speed read-through last year. I'll be curious to see if I interpret anything differently when I make my way back up to PH this time around! So like I'm not even going to say neutral for now so much as "obliviously unaware that this is a thing that could even remotely happen" - no stance yet.

I always said I was afraid of MRIs because I’m afraid I’ll have some kind of metal in me that I’ve forgotten about and I literally do. I didn’t remember until this moment that I’ve got a permanent retainer.

About Eddy Current Recycling
About Eddy Current Recycling Introduction Eddy current recycling stands as an essential innovation in the domain of materials recovery and recycling. At its center, this advanced process utilizes the power of eddy currents – circulating currents induced in conductive materials exposed to a changing magnetic field. This can efficiently separate non-ferrous metals from mixed waste streams,…
